Mythological Deer - Snawfus

“While posing no threat to humans itself, seeing Snawfus in the Ozark Mountains is said to be a bad omen, even warning of imminent death. It is an all white deer with blooming plum or dogwood branches instead of antlers. The blue haze that settles over the region in fall and winter is believed to be its breath. One origin story is of a hunter who, when he ran out of bullets, used plum pits to fire at an albino deer. Despite a clear headshot it got up and ran away, and the hunter later heard stories of a deer with plums growing from its antlers.”

Also here’s a bit on the snawfus, one of my personal fav critters. The snawus is a folklore creature found in various tales of the Ozarks. It’s said to be a white deer with flowering trees for antlers, and not always but sometimes said to have wings that it uses to jump into the trees. The antlers are variously described as dogwood, apples that had been grafted to it, or plums which came from a hunter shooting it with plum seeds. Like many white deer tales the snawfus is a creature that eludes those hunting the deer, seeming to survive or dodge shots. It is said the snawfus exhales a blue-ish smoke, that becomes the mist that hangs over the Ozarks in cooling weather.

Monster Girl Romance Fiction Prompt #58

A lovestruck Snawfus wants to take pictures of the two of you together to prove to her gal pals in the hollow mountain that humans weren't just made up for supernatural romance fiction.

Actually really surprised I haven't managed to post this anywhere yet, so now I am posting this now! This is the winning piece for the Metazoo 2022 fanart contest for the Snawfus. I did this back in May/June of 2022 with a mix of alcohol markers and colored pencil, with gel pen highlighs. The Ozark lore of the Snawfus states that it is usually a white deer with wings, and antlers that are branches of a tree (either plum or dogwood). In Metazoo, it is considered a Light creature, and a lot of the light cards have a hint of rainbow, so I tried to add a hint of rainbow to the Snawfus' main body.

Vi I paused my morning studies to read the fic and lord was it a mistake I'm not sitting in the middle of my library holding back tears of laughter, one of my supervisors (I work front desk, off shift at the moment) genuinely looks concerned, how do I explain everything's find I just read about fictional characters discussing if a cryptid was kosher or not Vi help-- (can't remember the tone tag for laughing but pretend that one's here)

Also question, now that I've regained control over my breathing: Why was the snawfus being hunted? Is that an omen-of-death thing or?

the blue mist that it exhales is a delirient, and it was too close to the the mortal town! virgil considers the human residents of the forest his subjects/responsibility as well, tho not quite in the same way he does the fae. enough to mostly leve them to their own devices with laws but still step in if he considers something unacceptable

on the bright side i found out abt a mythical deer creature that ive never heard of before (the snawfus) & i love it

So to preface I've known I'm kin with something deer shaped for like. A year now. Have been referring to it as just deer cryptid. Found out about this cryptid called a Snawfus and it's not me but I'm now considering it as well so I might have another deer cryptid kintype

The Snawfus is a fearsome critter from the stories of early United States lumberjacks. It is said to resemble a white deer with enormous antlers.

The Snawfus lives in the treetops of North American forests, hopping from branch to branch like a monkey. As it does, it utters an odd cry, described as "halley-loo!" In the autumn months, it exhales blue smoke.
