[Terminal Entry]
We still don’t know whether FEV or radiation is responsible for the way Admiral Spittz looks. All we can confirm... is that he’s ugly. His territory is known locally only as The Corpse, and he guards that half run aground Pre-war Aircraft carrier with his one running prop plane and his cadre of armed ghouls. Intelligence has yet to determine why the ghouls flock to that region- or to him. Approach with extreme caution. Suspected to be a highly trained ex-military Russian.

I made this as a zine years ago, and I realize that I never posted it here. I'm honestly really proud of it and I should do something more with this idea.

Snallygaster
It's that one cryptid from Maryland!
And that's literally all I know about it. I just think they look neat and cool. It's like the modern-day interation of a dragon (kinda sorta).
I really liked how this one turned out. I think I'm gonna stick with the "dry-brushing on black for that grungy yet colorful stlye" technique. Most depictions of snallygasters have a more dragon or eagle looking head, but I thought a chicken head would be more interesting and goofier.
Was even inspired to write a song about one. Still working on it, so we'll see if I ever finish it.

I’m just watching this video on youtube about North American monsters/cryptids, and I think one of the things I love most about folklore/mythology is the incredibly weird specific details. They’re amazing.
Like, I had never heard of Maryland’s snallygaster before, but everything about the reported version of the story is amazing. It’s a bird-lizard-tentacle creature like a cockatrice that has a cry like a train whistle, and during Prohibition apparently moonshiners used it as a full-on Scooby-Doo hoax to keep Revenue agents out of the woods, which leads up to the most excellent death for a cryptid ever. In that, apparently, it flew into the fumes from a monster moonshine still, was overcome, and plummeted to its death in a 2500 gallon vat of alcohol, and its body was then destroyed when Revenue raided the still and destroyed everything in it.
That’s just … that’s beautiful. I love folklore.
And the New Orleans version of the werewolf, the Rougarou, has some extremely Catholic details that I adore. One of the ways you can become one is to fail to observe Lent for 7 years in a row, for example. Or you can be cursed by a witch. If you’re cursed, and this is something I for real think more stories with werewolves should use, the curse has a time limit. You’re cursed for 101 days, and then the curse passes to the last person whose blood you’ve shed while cursed. So the curse perpetuates itself, but you are cured and just have to go back to your life living with whatever you’ve done and whoever you cursed in your stead. There’s some hella story potential in that version, especially if you imagine someone trying desperately to shed no-one’s blood until the curse passes from them. But, also, the tiny detail that I love the most, is that one of the ways to keep a Rougarou out of your house is to put 13 coins/stones on your doorstep, which is some extremely Catholic mythology seeping in, but the reason given in the story is that, for some reason, Rougarou can’t count past 12, so trying to count to 13 confuses and delays it. Which is just … some amazing back-justification, really. Why 12? You have 10 fingers! 20 digits, counting toes! It’s wonderful nonsense, because the number has a completely different source.
It’s the details that really make the magic when it comes to stories. If you’re making mythology for something, remember, put one small detail in that’s really weird and really specific. Human brains will hang whole stories on one tiny thing, if it sticks out enough.

Mega Evolution turns the atrophied wings of Pursnally into full blown appendages, capable of keeping it aloft and swift in the air. Curiously, it has grown two additional heads, all as eager as the first to locate and dismember prey; wrapping them its myriad of writhing tentacles or grasping them in its clutching talons. The start of what is hopefully a (likely sporadically posted) series of fan monster concepts based on Fearsome Critters and similar creatures of North American lore. I'm starting off with Eizgesta Zizhara, an Elder Dragon based on one of my favorite fearsome critters, the Snallygaster of Frederick County Maryland.
Tumblr media
Eizgesta Zizhara is a small elder dragon (typically around the size of the average Kirin) believed to be closely related to Kushala Daora. Like its cousin species, the Feathered Steel Dragon has metallic scales, although its body is primarily covered in glistening feathers finely ingrained with the same unknown iron as its scales.
Typically, Eizgesta Zizhara's diet consists of ore like Kushala Daora. However, while it similarly eats meat on occasion, it more often chooses to supplement its diet by piercing through the armor of prey and then inserting its tongue directly. Uniquely, Eizgesta Zizhara has a pair of strong, prehensile tongues, both with toothy suckers that it uses to drain blood from meals. While infrequent normally, it is known to consume blood more frequently during its molting period.
Similar to its cousin, Eizgesta Zizhara will shed its old skin as it begins to rust. This Variant of the species, known as Rustquill Eizgesta Zizhara, can be an active danger to the environment and human settlements.
Tumblr media
Rustquill Eizgesta Zizhara can take anywhere between 6 weeks to a year to fully molt. During this time, unlike Kushala Daora that will typically try to shed its entire skin at once, Eizgesta Zizhara will continuously shed rust for the entirety of its molting period. Rust dust can often be found coating large portions of the environment and pile up in areas where Eizgesta Zizhara rests. Researchers are unsure how it can seemingly shed more rust across this period of time than its coat should have at any one time, even if it is replenishing its metal through its diet. Due to the sheer amount of rust dust being shed, a single Rustquill Eizgesta Zizhara can be the cause of health issues for lifeforms not only the immediate environment, but also several miles around depending on the wind.

Here's the second part to my previous post. This post contains animals from bestiaries, mythology, and folklore that inhabit my multiverse.
UNICORN: A fierce, one-horned unicorn species who can wield various magical spells and are surprisingly omnivorous. They are capable of telepathic human speech and intellectual thinking. Being quite favoured by many, mages use them as familiars and warriors use them as noble steeds. They are also known for making deep guttural sounds and are extraordinarily swift.
PEGASUS: A winged horse species born from the blood of fallen serpents or large, fantastical reptiles such as dragons. They have large, powerful eagle-wings and sometimes are born with a spiralling horn on their head. They’re known for bringing thunder and lightning to Earth from the heavens.
HIPPOCAMPUS: A fish-tailed horse species who are commonly sighted along with a myriad of other sea creatures. These horses are playfully mischievous and curious, sometimes being rode by oceanic deities.
ASPIDOCHELONE: A massive whale species whose back resembles a small, yet safe island and can use its sweet odour to attract fish. It rises to the water’s surface, enticing sailors before diving back into the ocean and drowning them.
DRAGON: A massive, elemental-breathing serpent seen to be the greatest amongst all of Earth’s serpentine creatures. Besides their incredible breath, their lashing tail and naturally-forming venom can also cause great harm.
LÓNG: An eastern counterpart of western dragons and they possess numerous animalistic forms. They have the trunk of a serpent, the scales of a carp, the tail of a whale, the antlers of a stag, the face of a camel, the talons of eagles, the ears of a bull, the feet of a tiger, the belly of a clam, and the eyes of a demon. The elderly usually have a flaming pearl underneath their chin in order to represent their wise age. They have potent and auspicious powers, and are fully capable of controlling water and the weather.
AMPHISBAENA: A winged serpent species with two heads, one in its normal position and the other at the end of its tail. It can run in either direction, making escape from unwanted dangers a lot easier. Their eyes shine like lamps during nighttime or in the presence of darkness and are naturally born with cold resistance.
AMPHIPTERE: A two-winged serpent species that are fully covered in light-coloured feathers that imitate a sunrise. They have shimmering feathers that cover the forearms of their bat-like wings, a spiked tail, and a beak-like snout.
JACULUS: A flying serpent with two legs who hides in a tree until their prey passes underneath, throwing themselves down onto them and eating them.
SCITALIS: A serpent species whose marvellous markings decorating the back of its appearance can stun the viewer, making it easier for them to catch their prey.
CERASTES: A serpent species of exceptional flexibility and they have ram horns that bear nutritious leaves and berries. They hide in sand with their horns sticking out, making herbivores and some omnivores believe it’s safe to eat. Once their prey come close enough, they kill them with their acidic venom.
FALITUSUS: A serpent species that’s multi-coloured and their bite can cause forgetfulness, necrosis, and profound sleep.
TYRUS: A small serpent species who devour birds and their eggs, possessing deadly venom that’s in the preparation of a universal remedy for all poisons.
SALAMANDER: An aquatic species who have been granted by the deities with heat resistance, being able to live unharmed within fires. Its god-given coldness can extinguish the hottest and deadliest of flames. Its poison is disturbingly strong and can use it to kill many at once, even going as far to taint water supplies and crops. Other than that, they’re quite friendly and naturally curious, being favoured by many elemental mages and travellers alike.
QILIN: A hooved, chimerical creature that appears with the imminent arrival or passing of a sage, ruler or an individual with great charisma and power. They have antlers, eyes with thick eyelashes, manes that flow upwards, and goat beards. Their body exhibits a jewel-like brilliance and are covered in scales and shaped like a deer.
BASILISK: A surprisingly large, hydrophobic species that’s part-crested snake and part-rooster who are commonly sighted in dry areas. Its odour can kill serpentine creatures and its fire breath can kill birds. Its fearsome glance and erratic hissing can kill humans and sky inhabitants alike.
COCKATRICE: A small two-legged wyvern with a rooster’s head species who are closely related to the basilisks. They are genuinely harmless, but are capable of causing death either through touch or simply looking at their unexpected victim.
SNALLYGASTER: A nocturnal creature that is said to be half-reptile half-bird and usually prey on poultry, infants, and young children. They have a polished break of fine metal lined with razor-sharp teeth, octopus-like tentacles located on each side of the beak, and a thick, serpentine tail. It also had enormous, draconic wings and a cyclopean eye located in the centre of their heads. They can emit high-pitched screeching that are often described to sound like a fusion between a locomotive whistle and church bell. It swoops silently from the sky in order to pick up and carry off their victims to a secluded place. They sucked the blood of their victims and consumed their innards.
GRYPHON: A large bird species that’s part-eagle and part-lion, being considered the ruler of all beasts. They’re a powerful and majestic creature, being strong enough to carry an entire ox. They’re known for aggressively guarding treasures and priceless possessions.
PHOENIX: A massive bird species with purplish-red and gold feathers that is known for rising anew from the ashes of its funeral pyre. Their pyres, which also act as nests, are made out of wood, exotic spices, and healing herbs. After hundreds of years, they sit in their pyre and face towards the rising sun. Their magical plumage generates enough heat to ignite a fire, fanning it with its wings until they’re completely consumed. When the fire has died out, they rise from the ashes of the old and continue living their life. They have a bright, yet faint rainbow halo, Indian peacock tail feathers, a yellow rooster comb, sapphire eyes, red legs, and rose-coloured talons. Their feathers are used by mages and Ufrajozlens to create healing potions that can bring people who have recently died back from the dead.
CALADRIUS: An all-white bird species known to prophesied potential disease outbreaks and give people advice on how to prevent such a thing happening. They’re also used to tell when a person dying of sickness will die and even cure disease. If it looks at the sick person, it means they’ll live, but if it’s looking in the other direction, it means they’ll die. They cure disease by absorbing the sickness into itself and flying towards the sun where it’ll burn up.
STYMPHALIS: A man-eating bird species with beaks of bronze and sharp metallic feathers that they can launch at their victims.
HERCINIA: A bird species with feathers that glow brightly in the dark, serving as a natural beacon for travellers.
DYOMEDA: A bird species that are similar to coots, having the size of swans and hard-toothed beaks. They dig nests into the earth and cover them with fallen branches, making the exit face east and the entrance face west. They can distinguish between familiar and foreign faces, only attacking outsiders with bites.
CHURCH GRIM: A large black dog species who are secretly guardian spirits who are responsible for the welfare of churchyards and cemeteries. They protect these places from those who would profane and commit sacrilege against them, punishing the perpetrators of these scandals.
BLACK SHUCK: A horse-sized dog species that are related to the church grims, but they act as an omen of death. They haunt coastlines, graveyards, sideroads, crossroads, bodies of water and dark forests. They have shaggy black fur and a carpet of mist covering their heads, only their malevolent flaming eyes peer through.
HELLHOUND: A dog species that originates from Nifjazroghetus who are often physical representations of bad omens and imminent death. They’re able to warn people of danger and protect them when needed, acting as a loyal and watchful companion. Their fur colours vary widely, but all of them have razor-sharp teeth and glowing eyes in either green, red or blue. They smell like burning brimstone and leave behind a burned area wherever they go.
MUSCALIET: A small critter species with the body of a hare, the tail of a squirrel, and the teeth of a boar. It climbs and jumps from branch to branch by taking advantage of its tail’s strength. They make their nest in a hollow underground below an oak tree or fruit-bearing tree.
MUSQUELIBET: An animal species that are the size of a roe deer and their groin possesses an abscess from accumulated fluids. When it is ripe, it beats and rubs their groin against a nearby tree, loosening the abscess and producing sap that runs down, condenses, and hardens, which is called musk.
PARANDRUS: An animal species that can conceal itself by taking on the appearance of their surroundings. They’re coloured like a bear and they have the size of an ox, long hair, the head of a stag with branching horns, and cloven hoofs.
LEUCROTA: A swift hybrid species that has the fur of a hyena, the size of a donkey, the head of a horse, the chest and legs of a lion, hindquarters like a stag, and cloven hooves. It has an extremely wide mouth that stretches from ear to ear and a single bone where teeth should be. They’re fully capable of making sounds that eerily resemble human laughter and screams.
MYRMECOLEON: A hybrid species that has the head and front legs of a lion, and the body of a fire ant. They hide in the scorching desert sands, occasionally coming up to consume meat, grains, and ants.
TARASQUE: It’s a man-eating beast with the head of a lion, a body protected by a turtle-like carapace, six feet with bear-like claws, bristly scales, razor-sharp teeth, and a serpentine tail. They’re thicker than an ox and noticeably longer than the average horse. It can expel a poisonous and fiery breath, and fling its bolus at people like arrows, causing severe burns.
BUPRESTIS: A beetle species that’s highly venomous and often hides in the grass, waiting to be eaten by cows. When a cow consumes them, they begin to swell up a few minutes later and burst.
ALPHORAZ: A fish species that’s generated spontaneously from rotting mud when the lake they inhabit has no nourishing water. It starts as a worm, but it eventually grows into a fish when the lake water rises. However, they don’t live long, decaying shortly after the water disperses.
ASTARAZ: A fish species that’s closely related to the alphoraz and they’re spontaneously generated from the foam caused by rain near the seashore. They can’t stand the brightness of the sun, preferring to stay under trees overhanging the water as they provide sufficient shade.
BORBOTHIS: An eel species that has extremely slippery skin, a large head, and a broad mouth with the most delectable fish eggs.
GUDGEON: A small fish species that peacefully feeds in sandy-bottomed waters, but they can be corrupted by parasitic white worms that burrow deep into their bellies.
