My goal for 2024 is for 40% of my reads to be nonfiction. I've had two years within the recent past where I managed 20% of my reads to be nonfiction, so I'm aiming to double that. THIS WILL BE HARD FOR ME! Not because I don't enjoy nonfiction but because I enjoy fiction a lot more and have a lot more practice reading it. Haha Also for me, I am in circles where I'm just going to have more awareness of fictional books that I'm likely to enjoy more so than nonfiction. I'm kind of hoping that this years journey will change that a bit too!

I will actually add to this list as I get more recs and whatnot. And I still have some coming which I ordered from Thriftbooks. Once those are here, I'll add those. I'm a little sad there aren't more memoirs, but there's plenty of time for that yet! This is already 37 books, and given lately I've been reading about 70 (nonfiction may slow me down tho), these should give me plenty of ability to reach my 40% goal. Now it's just a matter of if I do it XD

Okay I forget to talk about this but there something rlly cool in the inheritance game trilogy (spoilers btw)

So the covers have rlly nice symbols i dont know if anyone noticed them but okay so the whole trilogy had chess pieces but the brothers Hawthorne doesn’t so that’s because the trilogy is kinda its own era Toby / Avery , Avery/ Tobias , Avery/vincent

okay so for the first book the chess piece is a king probably reference to Tobias king of the games of the mystery of the empire left for Avery

The second book has a rook which is where I get a bit more like crazy with this but the rook could reference Toby/Harry cause you know the rook is usually trapped in a corner till the like half the game kinda like how Toby was trapped till the fire idk kinda a stretch

The final gambit it’s a queen now Avery is the legal heir she won and beat vincent and how does she beat him queens gambit do you see it

Okay also in each three books you got the knife in every single cover (it’s kinda hidden in the third ) and in all three you got a flame and I think this is supposed to be reference to the fire Toby caused also there are necklaces in all books including the brothers hawthorn except the final gambit I still haven’t figured that out and finally keys these probably are reference to Avery’s first puzzle with the keys ( no key in the third tho ) and in all three you got crowns cause you know heiress

you also got the ballerina in the first book you also got the weird disk in the second book amd also Zara’s ring and a seashell ( reference to Toby and fire and lake )

And I am pretty sure that’s all but it’s rlly cool

Since TFG is in Waco, some thoughts from an actual expert on the standoff there in 1993...

1. The Branch Davidians, the sect led by David Koresh and that was involved in a long standoff with federal authorities in 1993, was a cult that involved both serial sexual child abuse - Koresh “married” numerous underage girls polygamously, allegedly with the parents’ (and his cult members’) consent - while also stockpiling weapons and engaging in a side business of illegally upgrading semiautomatic weapons to fully automatic. It was this latter business that brought the cult to the scrutiny of the federal government.

2. The raid in which the ATF attempted to arrest Koresh was fairly silly in its planning and utterly disastrous in its execution. Multiple federal agents were killed in the initial raid, as were Davidians. Many others were wounded, including Koresh.

3. The ensuing standoff in which the FBI sought to compel the Davidians to voluntarily surrender was a case study in stupidity. Described in the simplest way I can, putting extreme psychological pressure on a “the world is ending because the federal government is an agent of evil” cult is pretty much guaranteed to make members grow ever-more convinced that the government is evil, and so be that much less likely to surrender voluntarily. Which they didn’t.

4. There’s no evidence that the final assault that ended in the Davidian compound burning down, killing 80-odd members (we don’t really know how many people were in the compound, and numerous members were killed by gunshots fired from other members rather than the fire), was either intentionally or accidentally started by the federal government. There was, however, no good reason for the final push into the complex to take place when it did -- other, basically, than that the government agents involved got tired of being criticized for not “doing anything” about the Davidians. Like the initial raid, it was a choice -- a badly designed, poorly thought out one, just like the initial effort to arrest Koresh.

5. None of which has stopped a generation of politicians and activists from manipulating the events of the day to their own advantage. Just as TFG is doing this weekend.

The Justice Department is in the late stages of an investigation into Apple and could file a sweeping antitrust case taking aim at the company’s strategies to protect the dominance of the iPhone as soon as the first half of this year, said three people with knowledge of the matter.

Some of the things the Justice Department are interested in seen really strange to me. Like allowing access to the Messages Service. Why should Google, or whoever else, be given the keys to access Messages backend services? Apple created and runs that service. It’s not built on a free to use, government backed, open-to-the-public utility. It’s paid for and maintained by Apple.

Now, if by access the government means Apple has to open it up as a paid service, I could see that. Perhaps Google agrees to take on some of the cost burden, based on usage, or pay Apple some huge fee so Android users have full access to Messages with a native messaging app built by Google. That wouldn’t be so bad. Another alternative is for Apple to build a Messages app for Android and sell access to the service as a monthly subscription. Hey, Apple, that means more service revenue! 😁

The whole App Store payment kerfuffle is something a lot of developers would like to see changed. I think most developers don’t want to pay Apple 15-30% of their potential revenue. That can be a lot of cheese for many Indie developers. There are some things Apple could change to help the situation, like allowing developers to actually tell users to visit their website to sign up or subscribe to their service. E.G. Amazon and Netflix cannot tell new users, through their app UI, to visit their website to get started. For a company who prides themselves on simplicity and great user experience sure do make it difficult for third-party apps to be easy to use.

Anywho, I’ll certainly be keeping an eye out for the Justice Department taking action against Apple and fallout from it.

So at the beginning of a new year, I’m going to remind myself that I’m too old and not paid well enough (I’m not paid at all, heh) to do another year of this kind of work. I should be making writing and reading tools work better on the web. That’s my mission.

Dave has been an innovator all his adult life. Whether it was scripting on the Mac and Windows or creating widely used technology like RSS and podcasting. Since he sold weblogs.com and left UserLand he’s continued to build writing tools of various kinds. His latest venture is FeedLand. It’s a feed reader and more. I can personally see it as a mechanism to follow and find excellent podcasts for a podcast player. Yes, it has an API that could be used for such things and it has full search capability. Bet you didn’t see that use case coming!

Anywho, I hope you get some rest, Dave, and have a wonderful 2024 making the web a better place for writers.

Back in the ’00s you would download a feed reader and subscribe to feeds. This felt a lot like an early version of social media. Google Reader was killed in 2013, which was largely seen as the death of RSS. I think social media generally replaced RSS because it took far fewer technical skills to setup a Facebook account versus an RSS-enabled blog.

This is interesting because it uses Mastodon as a feed reader. That’s not a bad idea, really. It’s such a good idea to have a timeline based reader I made one! 😁

All the stuff Tim says about Facebook and other social media platforms is 100% accurate. Those platforms stood in for blogs because of their low barrier to entry. Quite honestly I’m surprised Facebook never embraced blogging as a true feature of its platform, complete with all the expected bells and whistles, and that includes RSS and posts that don’t require a Facebook login to read them.

Well, things changed a little bit in tech of late. Often, the power shifts in the tech world because of a dramatic new invention that solves an old problem a whole lot better. But in the current era, when most of what’s getting funded and hyped up are just various attempts to undermine workers and control consumers, we’re instead seeing lots of major players lose power because their signature offerings have gotten so much worse.

There was a time, not that long ago, folks said things like “RSS is dead” or asked “Is RSS dead?” First off, it’s just a technology, so it can’t actually die. Second, its web fabric and has been since its inception. It’s boring stuff — this is not a dig or insult, it’s a compliment. It’s as boring as HTML or CSS. I’d imagine it’s been used for all sorts of stuff beyond blogs over its history and it’ll probably be around for as long as we have a web to browse.

Sure social media, or microblogging, took center stage for a while. My own blogging slowed for a long period of time because I started posting little blurbs of text to Twitter instead of my blog.

Now I do that with a combination of Mastodon and Micro.blog. Short posts go to Mastodon and Micro.blog and long posts, like this one, go to my blog with a link on many services including Mastodon, Micro.blog, Blue Sky, and Tumblr.

My blog is at the center. It’s my content, I own it.

I always find this question odd. I figure I’ll stop when, or if, I just stop one day. I suppose folks who do it professionally have to think about stuff like this, especially if they have subscribers and/or advertisers.

Maybe when the day comes that you’d like to stop doing it for a living you just let folks know you’re going to blog about whatever you’d like and do it for fun?

I’ve been blogging since February 2001 and still love it.

In 2013 Ryan Seacrest was part of an effort to bring a physical keyboard to the iPhone. It was called Typo and I never heard much about it beyond the initial announcement. I could’ve sworn it was earlier than 2013, but my memory sometimes fails me.

It’s obvious some Windows users and pundits still have an inferiority complex when it comes to the Mac. It’s surprising.

I’m an old, long time, Windows developer and I owe a lot to the platform. I spent around 20 years writing code for Windows and I still believe it to be an amazing platform for users and developers. But I switched to the Mac full time in 2006 and have grown to enjoy it every bit as much as Windows.

It’s perfectly fine to love using a different operating system or prefer coding for one over the other. Let people have fun and enjoy what they love doing. ❤️

Here’s hoping 2024 isn’t a complete shit show. 🤣

We all knew this was the calm before the storm, but every time i felt that tom was getting a little more open and vulnerable, BAM, "one night stand" or "fake" or "just sex" were thrown around. I was excited for the smut, cause in my naive self i thought that meant confessing their feeling. When reading it, they were painting their adoring matching shoes, and i knew that they will fuck it up. there were two quotes that killed me. "He’d willingly shatter his heart for one night wrapped..

+ ... "wrapped up in you." Like wow, there was something so physical about the lines, idk, something so contradicting and beautiful and visual. Just made me read those words again. (Then the sfw left the chat appeared, making me laugh so loud, that it changed the mood. and then again ;) ). And the other quote that i adored: "you’ve just reached into his chest and wrapped your fist around his heart" Ending the ch with that idea, so clear and painful...As usually, perfection. Favourite Canadian band/musical artist?: Aw, man this is tough because like all the ones I liked were one-hit-wonders hahah (like One Ton), but hmm this is a hard one. Shame me if you want, but I like Nickelback, and I like Rush as well. The Tragically Hip is great, and Great Big Sea! Fun fact: one of my profs in college designed one the Hip’s album covers and won a Juno for it. He brought the Juno into class one day and showed us since no one believed him haha. It was awesome.

Mr. Dressup, Today's Special, or The Friendly Giant? OH NO DON’T MAKE ME CHOOSE THESE WERE THE SHOWS OF MY CHILDHOOD. I still remember the theme songs. I was GENUINELY scared of the mannequin when I was really young in Today’s Special, and I don’t remember much about TFG, so I’m gonna say Mr. Dressup. I saw him live as a kid, I barely remember it, but my Dad liked the show too so we watched it together. ALSO Polka Dot Door (I used to get SO INFURIATED that the dude ALWAYS missed Polkaroo); Sharon, Lois, & Bram/The Elephant Show (🎶one elephant went out to play 🎵); and Under the Umbrella Tree. LISTEN, kids today are missing out on all the greats.... these shows treated kids like people, and talked to us like people. Now it’s all “let’s stare creepily at the screen and repeat shit over and over again”. Oooof.

Do you eat your Kraft Dinner with ketchup? Oh, no no no, never. My dad did sometimes, and I tried it, but I’ve never been a fan of ketchup except on burgers.

Swiss Chalet or St Hubert ? Oh MAN. Don’t make me CHOOSE. AHHHHH before I moved to "on the Quebec border” I would’ve said Swiss Chalet since St-Hubert is hard to find outside of Quebec-area cities. But now, I’m gonna have to go with St-Hubert, I like their chicken sandwiches better and their fries aren’t soggy and they (BLASPHEMY) have better sauce. BUT I order more often from Swiss Chalet since they take Scene Points and I have like 25,000 of them since I’m not going to movies, so I get like 25$ meals for 5 bucks LOL. And they deliver cheaper LOL. Swiss Chalet, though, has more variety, so they have that.

These were so iconic and I was always so excited to see the Film Board segments on TVO and CBC. UGGGGH gonna have to go with The Log Driver’s Waltz, I still to this day find myself humming this one. Both have charming animation for their time, but I love the music of the Waltz! <3 (and I watched both of these when I was looking for links, and had both a smile and a nostalgia hit from it, so thank you!)

uh... another old tag game from @personalizedtohannah... thanks!!!

1. What made you decide to start writing or arting (assuming you write or do art)? I always told stories as a kid, and tried to write several novels growing up. It only really stuck when I get into fanfiction though.

2. What do you like to do more: photo editing or video editing? Photo editing.

3. Which do you prefer: YouTube or TikTok? TikTok.

4. How many books have you read in the last 5 years? I’ve really veered away from novels and original books in the last few years even though I try to focus on them. I usually only read fanfiction, and even then it’s only recently that I can finish them. On that note: I have no idea.

5. Do you tend to post more cheery/cutesy things, silly things or more serious things to your blog? Usually silly, but with the current situation it’s been less silly.

6. How long have you been on Tumblr? Just ramble for a minute about some changes you’ve noticed about the site. I’ve been on tumblr since pizza was popular, although I was too new back then to understand when they were booted out. I’d say... 2013-ish? I lost my first blog, but I only ever liked stuff on it anyway. I see way less new content than I did back then though.

7. If the staff of tumblr came up to you, genuinely wanting advice on how to improve the site, what advice/request(s) would you give them? Don’t try to make tumblr like other social media sites.

8. What was the most challenging thing about starting your favorite hobby? How did you get past it, if you ever did? What hobbies? I watch anime and eat.

Barkwursts and Kickstarter Info!

Hey everyone! Got a bunch of stuff to talk about in this post, so let’s get rolling! If you aren’t already on the discord, I’d recommend joining it by clicking this link. This is by far the best way to get in touch with me and keep track of development.

Barkwursts

Around 2-3 years ago, during The Fantabulous Game’s development, I announced the existence of Spheredogs. These dogs would serve a similar purpose to Jinjos, giving Capboy a sausage if he collects them all in a level. Initially made as a reference to the original Le Fantabulous Game, I’ve decided to change that plan. After all, the new Spheredog design wasn’t even a sphere, but rather more of a sausage with legs! So, I present to you: Barkwursts!

Barkwursts are the exact same as Spheredogs were in TFG, just with a new name. Though they aren’t designed as of right now, Spheredogs will be returning as small, kickable, gremlin-esque Spherefriends -- just as they were back in the very first iteration of Le Fantabulous Game. The Sausage rewards will be doled out by a new character, interested in collecting Barkwursts to help his own Quest for Sausage...

The first new Capkin design in Fantaria’s history, I present to you: Ecapresu, the Farmer! Living in Home Sausage, Ecapresu uses Barkwursts to help facilitate his peaceful harvest of Sausages. To thank Capboy for bringing Barkwursts to him, Ecapresu shares a portion of his harvest with Capboy. Additionally, Capboy will be able to learn more about his own species from Ecapresu, as well as get information on the Barkwursts that he has brought.

The aspect of Barkwursts that I’m the most excited about, however, is their integration into the Kickstarter. The Barkwursts you see above are actually created by members on the testing team, hence their fantastically varied designs! Also named by these testers, these fellas will serve as the five Barkwursts found in Fantaria’s demo level. On that note, I’d like to move on to talk about the Kickstarter’s stretch goals and reward tiers!

Kickstarter Reward Tiers

Fantaria: The Quest for Sausage is going to have a variety of reward tiers, focusing on digital rewards. Every tier has its own title in the credits, and your name will be listed alongside all of your creations (if you’re okay with it!) in the credits as well. I won’t be going into incredible depth on all of them here, but here’s a quick lowdown:

$5: Coolfriend. Have your name put in the credits, and receive a wallpaper pack. Every further tier has the wallpaper pack as well!

$15: Digital copy of the game on release.

Backerfriend title in credits.

$25: Deluxe copy of the game on release. In addition to the game, this features the soundtrack and access to (potential, not guaranteed!) DLC released in the future. Every tier beyond this point also has the deluxe edition of the game.

$60: Design-a-Spherefriend. Similar to the build-a-spherefriend tool I released many years ago, design a Spherefriend NPC by choosing color, size, name, and customized headwear. Also, you can name your spherefriend, pick a combat unit archetype, and write a small dialogue blurb to be translated into Spherespeak!

$120: Design-a-Barkwurst. With much more freedom than Spherefriend designs, you can have your own Barkwurst design put into the game, along with a name and a bio! As seen with the example 5 above, Barkwurst designs have a lot of freedom, so this will be your chance to really get creative.

Dogfriend title in credits.

$150: Designer Dogfriend. Design both a Spherefriend and a Barkwurst! The next two reward tiers give you these privileges as well.

$300: Design-an-NPC! This tier will let you get your own unique NPC design into the game, with at least one encounter in one of the games’ levels. Note that due to the larger universe impact of a proper NPC, some restrictions will apply -- see below.

Deluxe Designerfriend title in credits

$600: Design-a-boss! This tier will let you design your own unique boss encounter for Capboy and Friendwoman to face, featuring its own unique fighting style, difficulty, arena, personality, and rewards upon defeat! Note that due to the larger universe impact of a full bossfight, some restrictions will apply -- see below.

Kickstarter Reward Limitations

To help make sure Fantaria: tQfS is a cohesive experience that fits my vision, there are some limitations on “design-an-x” reward tiers. Note that these are guidelines, not hard refusals! If you have a character that you’re concerned will be affected by these limitations, I want you to reach out to me to talk about it! I’m always willing to work to find a compromise if you’re interested in seeing your character or design in Fantaria..

I reserve the right to have final say on small tweaks of all backer designs

You must legally own the rights to the characters and/or designs you request! For example, a direct lift of Mario’s outfit on a Spheredog wouldn’t be okay, but a design which clearly falls under parody would be. This applies more strictly to the higher tiers (see below).

Spherefriends cannot be made super massive, and their headwear shouldn’t be excessively vulgar or otherwise go counter to Fantaria’s aesthetic (i.e. no hyper realistic textures).

Barkwursts must always have the same silhouette, and make the same SFX as each other, to ensure the player can easily identify them despite the varied designs.

NPCs and Bosses have some further restrictions:

No humans. Friendwoman is the only human presently in Fantaria’s universe, and this is a very key component of the universe. If you have a human design that you’d like to see, I’d be thrilled to work with you on creating a variation of it that fits into the universe! (i.e. a capkin or PBot version).

No parodies/memes. Unlike Spherefriends and Barkwursts, which don’t weigh much on the plot or universe, NPCs/bosses should not blatantly be referencing real-life jokes or personalities. This does not mean that they all have to be serious, they can be wacky and silly! Just...no ugandan knuckles parody, or trump parody, or other designs like that.

No characters with explicit and consistent ties to adult material. It’s totally fine if your character is generally slightly lewd or attractive, but if all they’re associated with is porn (either vanilla or fetish), they won’t be a good fit for Fantaria.

I retain final say on the power level of your character in relation to the cast of Fantaria. This is mostly to make sure that no characters become more important to the plot and events than pre-existing characters like Capboy and Friendwoman...unless, of course, I think the design can fit into such a role! Naturally, you still have control over your character’s personality and attitude, and I will run any story events they are involved in by you to make sure you’re satisfied with the way they react.

Kickstarter Stretch Goals

Now that that’s out of the way, the final thing I’d like to talk about here are Kickstarter Stretch Goals! I’ve budgeted these all fairly thoroughly, as I’ll explain in more detail when the KS itself launches. These are as follows:

$25,000 -- Initial Goal. This provides me with the living costs needed for the estimated year and some change of remaining development, as well as to commission Scandre and Viv for art and music, respectively.

$30,000 -- Local Deathmatch. This tier will add a local deathmatch option to the main title, where you can fight with up to three of your friends in brand new arenas inspired by the couch competitions of old!

$35,000 -- More levels. This tier will add four fully-featured secret levels, pushing Capboy to the limit and providing special new rewards. These levels will each come with a unique ability, melee weapon, and bossfight

$40,000 -- The Fantabulous Arena. This tier will add a special arena to the game, allowing Capboy to fight endless enemy waves and challenge bosses that he’s already defeated again! In addition to being able to have fun experiencing these fights, the Arena will have special challenges restricting Capboy to certain weapons, with even more sausages being rewarded for completing them. Finally, post-release, all bosses will receive an additional Fantabulous version of themselves, unlocking potent new weapon upgrades for Capboy!

$50,000 -- Nightmare Mode. This tier will add a second campaign, inspired by the brutal NG+’s found in oldschool games. Play as Capboy’s ally Friendwoman, travelling backwards through a distorted and damaged version of the main game’s story. Face brutal platforming challenges, intense battle arenas, and mindbending puzzles, using with all of the main game’s weapons and unlocks to overcome the odds! Naturally, this mode will also feature every single Fantabulous boss in place of their standard versions. Nightmare Mode, if funded, would release as post-release DLC free to all backers of the $15 tier and above.

$60,000 -- Local Co-op. Friendwoman will be able to join in with Capboy in the main quest, with the game dynamically adjusting challenges and obstacles to adjust for the additional player. When in multiplayer, bosses will gain new co-op exclusive mechanics, and co-op exclusive puzzles and battle rooms will block the pair’s route. This will also allow Friendwoman to be played instead of Capboy in the singleplayer main campaign. If funded, this tier will release alongside the main game, and will likely cause some slight delay to the current predicted release date.

$65,000 -- Nightmare Co-op. Friendwoman will be able to bring Capboy with her on her quest through the nightmare realm, enabling cooperation against the new threats and challenges of this brutal adventure. As with the main campaign, new unique co-op oriented challenges will be present when in multiplayer on this campaign! If funded, Nightmare Mode will have co-op when it is launched post-release.

$80,000 -- Online Multiplayer. If funded, all multiplayer modes will be able to be played with one another online! Releasing with the main game, Online Multiplayer will likely result in some further slight delay to the predicted release date if funded.

Whew, that was a lot! If you bore with me for all of that, you’re a superfan, and it’s great to know that there are people dedicated enough to read through all of that. As for when the KS and demo will actually launch, my current prediction is July 26th -- ironically, the same date (+4 months) as I wanted to release TFG’s kickstarter last year! Now that I’ve recovered from the issues I discussed in the last post, I’ve been diving deep back into development and making great progress. As we approach that date, I will continue to evaluate the amount of work remaining and let you guys know if that seems like it’s going to change.

As I said at the beginning, swing by the Discord if you haven’t already and want to talk about this stuff! I’m very eager to hear feedback on the price points of rewards and stretch goals, and am willing to listen to suggestions on any changes. See you guys soon with another chunk of progress!

“You have the subtlety of an anvil, Kit,” she remarks softly, like she’s not entirely sure they want her to acknowledge they’re speaking. It seems so foreign to be talking in hushed tones, even in a place filled with intimate gossip.

“Refreshing?” They’re already burying the thought in the flute, their second tonight. Go down well, they pray but smile at the thought.

“You could say that,” she says. “Why’re you here, if I may ask? Nikita found you a spot in a coveted gala to dress you in… this?”

“It’s a Tadashi Shoji. Might have been a sole motivator.”

“Oh, of course, it is.” This in a tone like she’s planning her own funeral before she gives them the briefest of once-overs, and her head shakes; nothing at all like Mr Sweater Vest. “You look good.”

That… that shouldn’t make them feel like that. Shit, they must be starved for attention, even in a room full of it. Whatever. This room is full, point-blank. Full of everything.

“Uh, thank you. So do you.”

She scoffs, smiling a little wider anyway, downing the last of what appears to be a sophisticated vodka soda. “I heard you got yourself into a brawl.”

“Oh my— When?”

“Couple of days ago. Seems my apprentice is not too shabby at keeping her head down?”

“She may have thrown a punch once, and then said punch did land. What can I say? I don’t blame her for the chaos that ensued, but I’m glad I wasn’t there.”

She frowns at that. “Thought you would’ve been the first to break it up.”

“We’d… Courtney,” they explain, and she gives half a nod, which makes them realise she still doesn’t know much at all. “I did, however, nearly get rammed into by a white man in a galaxy cat t-shirt.”

“What?” Zephyr barely contains her laughter, absolutely dumbfounded. “In what world—”

“Hey,” they say, with a small shrug, “he honked at me. Tried to cut in front without an indicator so I just, y’know, sped up. Glad I’m alive.”

“Please tell me you didn’t win the fight.”

“What, you wanted him to win?”

“They’re already going through it.” She wrinkles her nose and her face lights up. There’s a certain relaxation in the lean into her hip, the gentle way she holds the tumbler as the breeze sifts through and rustles her hair. These are the moments they understand why she likes capturing every moment, no matter how small. “I swear if you win a fight against another grown man in a galaxy cat t-shirt I will personally compensate you.”

“You wouldn’t dare.”

“Colour me stoked for another incident,” she says cheekily, before smiling in such a mischievous way they nearly let themself be an accomplice. “I’ll catch you later, okay?”

this is such a chaotic question to answer, and at times, i feel a bit silly with what this novel now means (so MUCHness) to me. it started off with me reading a fanfiction about a photographer falling for a model they'd worked with— only, not the same story whatsoever. it sparked the first scene of TFG and i'm forever grateful to it. sometimes i'll read the first two chapters when i'm feeling like it <3 as well as that, i'd been itching to write a wholeheartedly queer pairing with a significant age gap that didn't actively feel horrible & wasn't involving a shitty power dynamic, but painting them as clear equals. which is how i ended up writing zephyr! and then, slowly but surely, lucille came to fruition and MY WORD these characters mean more to me than i can physically, mentally, emotionally even describe. TLDR: TFG was born(e) from a fanfiction i read, and after wanting to write a positive age-gap queer pairing, this thing now exists and is bordering a solid 300,000 words. <3

If there is one certainty in life, as in death, it's that the good old US of A is really good at gun violence.

12 killed, dozens wounded in weekend shootings across U.S.

At least 12 people were killed and dozens more were wounded over the weekend in gun violence and mass shootings in five states.

The shootings in Minnesota, Ohio, New Jersey, Georgia and South Carolina come amid a yearlong rise in nationwide gun violence and record firearm sales.

The latest violence erupted near a bar in Youngstown, Ohio, shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday. Three people were killed and three others were injured, one of them critically, after an incident inside the bar, Police Chief Carl Davis said at a news conference. He said authorities were searching for suspects and provided no other details.

Mayor Jamael Tito Brown said in a news conference that the shooting was “unnecessary” and that “it breaks my heart when we have young men and women” dying.

An hour earlier, three people were found dead from gunshot wounds in a condominium complex just south of Atlanta in South Fulton, Georgia. Authorities found the victims, who haven't been identified, after a report of gunfire at 1:30 a.m., a police spokesman said.

It wasn't clear what prompted the shooting, and no suspects had been identified, he said.

Mother of boy, 6, killed in California road rage shooting: ‘It feels like my life is over'

The devastated mother of 6-year-old Aiden Leos is talking for the first time since her son was shot and killed in a road rage incident on the freeway in Southern California. The young boy was killed Friday morning as his mother was driving him to school on the 55 Freeway.

“This is not okay…Whoever these people are and for whatever reason, this is not okay. It should never happen again. So whatever help this does, that's my intention, is for my son,” said Joanna Cloonan, the boy's mother.

Authorities say someone shot at the car from a newer model white sedan, possibly a Volkswagen, and struck Aiden, who was sitting in a booster seat. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Sunday condemned Belarus for forcing down a civilian airliner over its airspace in order to arrest a dissident on the flight.

Canada’s housing market is running hotter than just about anywhere else in the world.

There's seriously no fanfiction for Meru?! Tumblr search in general showed me some reviews but people have moved to AO3 okay, so I go to AO3 and all results are Deep Space Nine and a couple random other things that have some reference to a 'Meru' word. (Yes I put Meru into the fandom box.)

I am so disappointed. The book does fade to black but has a romance between a non-human and human! Even if most others, like me, can't even begin to figure out how to imagine smut between the human and the space-ship sized body of her lover, ze has a humanoid body that sounds stunning and that is certainly imaginable!!

After your date, Jason gave you a ride back to your home, you two decided to meet again next week to go to the movies. And that you could anytime go to his secret haven as it was yours too.

You gave him a kiss on the cheek as goodbye and entered your building. Once inside you let the blush and the silly smile free. Jason had make you all tingly.

You opened your door to find Damian sitting in the dark, he turned on the light as you entered the apartment.

“Where were you?”

“umm, out?” You closed to door and turned the lights on, then walked towards your room. Damian followed you.

“You said 2 hours!”

“And??”

“You were out for 3!”

“oh Damian, I’m so sorry! Did Tim leaved an hour ago? Have you eaten!?”

“He leaved half an hour ago and yes. I cooked as Drake can’t even do an omelet.”

“Can I do something to make it up to you?” You hugged him.

“…Take me to the zoo”

“Okay”

“AND you take me to eat on the new vegetarian place.”

“Okay!”

“Now, go to sleep, (y/n).”

“Okay…good night, dami” You kissed his forehead and he quickly kissed your cheek.

“Night, (y/n).” He opened his door and closed it behind him.

You smiled at his cuteness and closed your door, you changed into your pajamas and fell face first on the bed, you hugged your pillow.

Now you had even MORE conflicting feelings.

You felt your eyes closing from the tiredness of the day, your muscles relaxing and you fell asleep.

The last thing you saw was a mop of black hair setting next to you on the bed and hugging you, their head buried in your neck.

Softly you kissed his cheek and kicked him, when he started moving you turn your back to him and pretend you were asleep.

He woke up, looked as if you were asleep and leaved your room sneakily.

You smiled when he closed the door and high fived the air.

Your plan has worked!

You quickly got up, showered and brushed your teeth.

You prepared a quick breakfast for Dami and when you saw him enter the kitchen you bid him goodbye.

Damian started eating and contemplating how to ask you to come to his father’s gala next week.

He was cleaning his dishes when someone come in thought the windows. Damian glared and grabbed the broomstick, ready to kick the ass of whoever dared to enter HIS house-I mean (Y/N) house!

He sneacked up to the living room, and prepared to attack when the figured turned around.

“Grandfather?!”

“Hello, Damian.” Ra’s Al Ghul said, while holding a small frame with a photo of your parents and you. “She’s pretty, isn’t her? Reminds me of my sweet Sora…”

“Let her out of this grandfather!” Damian growled. “What do you want!?” he asked, ready to attack.

“My, you’ve grow weaker than I expected. I was just checking on my grandson training.”

“I’m not following your commands anymore grandfather.”

“It will be a real shame if something were going to happen to her” Ra’s smirk send chills down his spine.

“I won’t let you.” Damian growled.

Ra’s smirked. “Careful, my boy. It’s not wise to threaten me.”

“Tt.”

“Now I must leave. Remember boy, don’t cross me.” Ra’s smirked before disappearing.

“…she can’t stay here. I need her to talk to father.”

“Timmy!! Hey!” You smiled at Tim, who was waiting outside for you.

“Hey, (n/n) want to go out today??” Tim smiled cheekily. “ Only us…like a date.”

“Sorry, Timbo. Gotta take care of dami. He’s been alone all morning.”

“Oh….” Tim’s smile faltered.

“We were going to the zoo, I promised him we’ll go and then to the new vegetarian place.”

“I’ll go with you! I’ll help you control the demon- I mean, my baby bro!” He grinned.

“ Aw,, he is a good boy.” You smiled softly.

“Yeah….the best..” Tim frowned.

“ Then its settled! Come with me!” Hold his hand and walk home.

As people walked and look at you two, Tim smiled proudly and held your hand tighter.

You smiled at Tim as you two went up to your apartment.

“Dami! I’m home!” you sing-sang

“(y/n)!! We nee-Drake what are you doing here” Damian glared at Tim and then pushed him away from you, breaking your hand hold. Dami hugged you.

“Awww damiiii!!”You hugged him back. “Grab your things! We are going to the zoo!!”

“And what’s Drake doing here.” Damian glared at him

“I’m coming too.” Damian snarled at Tim’s shit-eating grin. “Problem?”

“no.” Damian’s teeth clenched.

“Let’s go!!” You smiled obvious and held both of their hands.

“(y/n) YOU CAN’T PET THE LIONS!!!” Screamed Tim as he ran behind you and Damian.

“CUUUUBSS!!!!!!” You smiled at the baby lions who yawned cutely. “AWWWW!”

“They should be in the wild. Or with me, I would take care of them.” Said Damian looking with sparkling eyes at the cubs.

“THANKS-GOD!” Tim took a deep breath. “DON’T DO THAT AGAIN!!”

“Sorry, Timmy…” You smiled awkwardly

“Tt.” Damian looked away from the cute cubs to Tim.

“Let’s go eat, it’s getting late.” Tim said as he held your hand.

“Can we take them home?”

“NO.”

“I’ll take the tofu burger.” Damian said.

“I’ll take the (f/v/f) m, thanks”

“I’ll have the same as her.” Tim said.

“okay! Be back in a flash!!” The waitress smiled amicably as she went to the kitchen.

“So, (n/n) you ok living with the demon?” Tim said as he held your hand.

“He is a sweetheart!” You smiled at Damian as you brushed his hair. “And he like me , right dami?” You smiled as Damian blushed.

“Tt.” He said as looked away.

Tim looked suspiciously at Damian until his eyes widened in surprise and his mouth opened.

“you li-“ What Tim was about to say was interrupted by Damian’s kick. “auch!”

“Are you ok, Tim?” You asked.

“The demon just-“ Damian kicked him harder. “auch!!stop it!”

“I’m not doing anything!” Damian said.

“You kicked me!”

“I didn’t! AUCH!” Damian said. “Drake you’re a child!!”

“Said the child!!”

“Here is your food!!” The waitress smiled as she let your plates in the table.

“Thank you.” You smiled.

“You’re welcome. Enjoy your food!” She smiled and left.

The three of you ate in silence, Damian and Tim keep glaring at each other when the door was broken by Ivy.

“Look at those killers!! All those plants dead!!” Ivy smirked as vines came out of the floor, one of them grabbed you and raised you high in the air. “Look, a pretty flower in a group of monsters.” More vines appeared holding you still. “Harley, take all they have.”

“Aye, Red!!” Harley came into the room an one by one took all their things.

“He have to escape, they have (y/n).” Tim whispered. “Grab that knife to cut the vines.”

“tt” Damian carefully grab the knife and cut the vines, freeing him and Tim. They crawled to the bathroom and changed to their uniform and banged in the room. Damian fought Harley, knocking her out as Tim took on Ivy, he cut the vines holding you and carried you off of danger.

“Ma’am please stay here, your friends will join you shortly.” He said

“Wait, how do you- Tim? Tim is that you?”

“What, no!”

“Then robin is Damian??”

“I must go.”

“NO WAIT!”

Red Robin came back to the battlefield and knocked Ivy out.

“How is she.” Robin asked.

“She knows.” Rr said.

“What? How?”

“She just does. Bring those two to Arkham.” Red said. “I’ll bring (y/n) to her home. We wait you there.”

“Tt.” Robin grab the two knocked out villainesses and jump out.

Tim sighed and ran out to where you were sitting.

“(Y/n), lets go back, ok?” Tim smiled as he carried you bridal style to your apartment.

Tim open your windows and let you inside, he entered behind you and took his mask of.

“Tim, since when?” You looked at him and he sighed softly.

“Since I was nine.”

“…Timmy..”

“I didn’t want you to know. It’s dangerous for you to do…and I didn’t want you to worry…”

“Tim, its ok.” You hugged him. “Your secret is safe with me. I won’t lose you for this. And I can kick ass!!”

Tim smiled softly and grabbed your face and pulled you up for a sweet kiss.

Your eyes opened wildly but seeing his closed eyes and smile you whined and kissed back.

“I’m..sorry, (Y/N)…I just…love you” He kissed your lips again, “So much…”

“Tim..” You whined. He pulled you closer and kissed you hard. One of his hands hugged your waist and the other was lost in your hair.

“Hey (y/n). Can I…. come, in..” Said a man as he fell inside your living room.

“JASON!” You screamed as you ran to help him to your couch.

“I’m going for the first aid kit!” Tim ran to the bathroom and brought the kit.

“Jay, what the hell? Who shot you?” You said as you teared his shirt open and stopped the bleeding.

“A...thug, he was selling drug * hiss* to kids. He had to be stopped.” Jason hissed as you applied the clothe in the injury.

“Here! The first aid kid!” Tim gave you the kit. “And this for him to bite when you pull the bullet out.” Tim put a towel in Jason’s mouth for him to bite.

“Now bite hard, this is gonna hurt.” You grabbed a pair of pincers and introduced them slowly in the wound.

“HIIIISS!” Jason bit the towel hard as you extracted the bullet of the wound, then disinfected it and wrap a bandage around it.

“Jay, you need to be more careful.” You kissed the wound and smiled. “You hungry?”

“Yes, thanks babe.” Jason smirked at you and you got up and let the first aid kit in the counter before cleaning your hands and preparing a small dinner for jay.

“Replacement you’re in suit she-“

“She found out on her own.”

“…Bats won’t like that.”

“I know.”

“Jay here!” You let a trail with warm food. “Eat everything ok? I’m going to put my pajama.” You walked to your room to put your pajama on, when you got out Jay had fallen asleep on your couch and Tim in the ground.

“Hey Dami.” You smiled at Robin.

“ What’s Todd doing here?”

“He got hurt and came to me to cure him.” You kissed his forehead. “Go sleep, little robin.”

“Good night (y/n)”

“Night , dami.” You smiled as he disappeared in his room.

You looked at Tim and thought for a moment.

Why not?

You dragged him to your room and let him in the bed. He made himself comfortable and sighed happily. As you were about to leave he pulled you in the bed and cuddled you.

“Tim-“

“Good night, (y/n)” You felt a sweet kiss on your forehead and you thanked that the light was off, or he would have seen your red tomato face.

“Night Timmy.” You smiled before hiding your face on his neck, the smell of his cologne calmed you and help you fall asleep.

Tim nose buried in your soft hair and smiled, soon falling asleep.

“I love you, (y/n).” Tim sighed to himself before closing his eyes.

“Father” A woman walked inside a dark cave illuminated by the green of the pool.

“Talia, my daughter…The moment has arrived. She’s almost ready my dear child.”

Talia smirked at the woman in the green water.

“Welcome back, mother.”
