K-pop Discography Deep Dives: Jonghyun

Since this is a very special review, I wanted to start off not with my “credentials” or with a disclaimer but with a story. I’ve been a casual k-pop fan since early 2019 and a deeper fan since March of the year after, when I discovered Red Velvet. In late November of 2020, during lockdown, I lost one of the people I loved most in the world. I was still a teenager (barely younger than Jonghyun was when he debuted in SHINee), and I felt alone and isolated, and I became depressed. And just three weeks later, on December 18th, I was scrolling on social media when I came across posts memorializing Jonghyun. I had heard him mentioned, through Yeri of RV, but had never taken the time to listen, and I finally did.

I saw people mourning, people celebrating, and most of all, people remembering. The k-pop world had just lost two more idols to suicide, Sulli and Hara, and the messages surrounding mental health had never been stronger. It was this that got through to me, like a lightbulb going off, and I went, “Shit, I think I have depression.” And I started taking medication. Now, I’m not going to credit him with saving my life because I have no idea what would’ve happened, but I try to continue what he did for me. But all I can do is what all of us can do, which is remember who he was, respect the art he created, and continue the great advocacy he started. So, in this review, I’m trying to do all three, and I’d love it if you came along with me.

Crazy (Guilty Pleasure) is first on the list, and immediately had me feeling nostalgic. There’s something about his voice that’s so instantly recognizable, and a song like this that oscillates between his more subdued style and the strong emotions of the chorus fits it so well. Surprisingly, I enjoyed the rap, probably because of the vocalizing behind it, which helped it blend in seamlessly. On the whole, I liked this one! Its strings and immaculate sense of drama reminded me of Taylor Swift’s Don’t Blame Me.

Deja Boo begins with Jonghyun’s classic sound of smooth R & B and his crooning voice. I enjoyed the constant starting and stopping of the instrumental, as it made what could be a boring song far more interesting, and while I’m not usually a fan of rapping or choruses so heavy on vocalizing, I actually liked both here, since they felt like they were there because they fit the song and not because someone thought that they “should” be. The “Okay, next” at the end gave me a good chuckle

It’s a testament to how strong this first EP is that, before this deep dive, I had no idea which of these songs were actually the title track. Beautiful Tonight’s distinctive whistling hook, Hallelujah’s beautiful gospel choir back-up, and Love Belt’s gentle words (and references to a real car accident that Jonghyun was in) all do something unique with what could be such simple R & B melodies, ensuring that the piece feels cohesive but never same-y. My favorite was definitely Neon, though, whose funky catchiness snuck up on me, and I ended up replaying it twice.

End Of A Day has always been one of my favorite singles of Jonghyun’s, and I’m not alone. There are few songs as heartfelt, and led by only his quiet, comforting voice and a gentle piano, it feels like a warm hug from someone you love. Telling the listener to “lean on my shoulder” and “let me cheer you up”, it features Jonghyun at perhaps his most earnest. I paused what I was doing for a few minutes just to appreciate the peace that this one radiates, and take a deep breath in and out.

The Collection “Story Op.1” is so called because it was written by Jonghyun based on the stories the listeners of his radio show Blue Night confided in him; it’s a very special album for that reason, because it truly feels like a group effort between him and fans. I enjoyed U & I’s sprightly piano, interesting percussion, and cozy guitar, Diphylleia Grayi’s gorgeously sad lyrics and strings, the falling rain sound effects and comfortable energy of 02:34 (which I think was my favorite), and the interpolated phone conversation in Maybe Tomorrow. This is one of my favorite albums of his, and has some of his most excellent imagery.

She Is, despite being super popular, is not a song of his I’ve listened to much. It leans more into funk and is lighter than his other singles (Crazy, End Of Day, Lonely, and Shinin’), being about having a crush. It’s a nice break from the sadder and darker aspects of his discography, and it’s also really catchy. I even liked the sing-talk aspects, though my favorite part was definitely the vocalizing in the post-choruses.

From the She Is album, I liked the “you, you, you” and finger-snapping in White T-Shirt, the ethereal quality of Moon, the layers of falsetto vocalizing in Aurora, the intentional vocal fry and minimalistic background of Cocktail, the sped-up quality of Red, and the vulnerability in Suit Up.

I admit that when listening to the She Is album, a part of me had forgotten the reason I was doing this review in the first place, but Lonely had me remember immediately. Lonely is, in hindsight, both gut wrenching and haunting, with its lyrics about feeling isolated and alone. It’s a beautiful song, don’t get me wrong—the piano is so lovely and Taeyeon and Jonghyun’s voices work beautifully together, each making the other sound richer—but it’s one of those tracks that you just can’t listen to more than once in a while.

The Collection “Story Op.2” follows where the first collection left off, with more stories inspired by the callers on his radio show. I enjoyed the calm guitar of 1000 and the gentle groove of Just Chill, but Let Me Out has been one of my favorite songs since the first time I heard it. It’s one of the most genuine, gripping, painfully open k-pop ballads I’ve seen, and it never fails to make me want to reach through the screen and say “No.”. Overall, though, this album is definitely a more subdued and peaceful album, although I might be imagining more melancholy with the benefit of hindsight.

Less than eight months after the release of his second collection was, again, December 18th, 2017. It’s a day that’s become so infamous that in the k-pop community just saying “December 18th” will likely get your message across. It gives me no joy to say that he had a plan; his last album, Poet | Artist was released just a month after he left the world; a final gift to the fans who had watched him grow up for both so long and not nearly long enough.

Shinin’ is the single from the album, and uses a glowing, minimalistic electronic synth background that expands with some percussion in its choruses. Jonghyun’s voice is at some of its smoothest here. It’s one of those songs that’s happy and sad at the same time, and its happiness feels…muted? It’s hard not to be emotional when the song ends with “always be with you, you, you.” Without the story behind it, it’s a simple love song. With it, it’s a promise that he’s managed to keep for the last six years. I do admit that I got a good laugh out of the super 80’s animation, though.

Before Our Spring wasn’t intended to be a single, but after his passing, SM Entertainment decided to make it a tribute video for him. It follows in the footsteps of End Of Day, as it’s a peaceful, piano-led ballad, but undeniably heartbreaking: “Before spring comes, before the sun rises, I’ll meet you when everyone is asleep. I’m okay, don’t worry, spring will come to me too.” I hope it does. Depending on the day, sometimes I listen to it and feel comforted, and sometimes I listen to it and just feel heartbroken. Thankfully, watching it with the video made it just a little easier. It’s good to hear him laugh.

Poet | Artist is Jonghyun’s last, posthumous album, and is one of his strongest. I loved the disco-y synths of Only One You Need, the tongue-in-cheek humor of #Hashtag, the chorus’ explosion in Grease, the ethereal encouragement in Take The Dive, the brighter and funkier delivery of Sightseeing, and the quietly anthemic quality of Just For A Day.

My top 5 songs from Jonghyun are End Of Day, Only One You Need, Take The Dive, Hallelujah, and U & I, with Neon and Let Me Out as honorable mentions. Jonghyun’s work gets a 9.25 out of 10 from me, which is probably about as surprising as TWICE announcing a comeback. In all seriousness though, I know that I’m super biased, but hey, we started with a sob story and that’s how we’re going to end.

I can’t really put into words the feelings I have about this review. Writing it has reminded me how grateful I am, not only that I found Jonghyun and his story, not only that I became a Shawol, but that I became a k-pop fan in general. As Jonghyun wrote in his book (which I haven’t been able to find a full English translation of yet, but I’m still trying), “Even though we can’t communicate using the same language, we use music instead.”

Jonghyun broke boundaries in k-pop, with his openness, his self-producing, his prolific writing, and his advocacy. Both our community and the world as a whole was very lucky to have him for as long as we did, which still wasn’t nearly long enough. He changed the lives of so many people—he changed mine, without me even knowing who he was at the time he passed away—and overall, he made the world just a little easier for everybody else, no matter how hard it was for himself. All this is to say, he did very, very well.

Of course, you’d happily agree, pleased with his warm and genuine response. The prospect of finally being able to share this part of yourself with him brought immense joy and both of you already anticipated the day you could perform for him for the very first time.

Jonghyun:

Jonghyun’s enthusiasm would certainly be palpable, his eyes shining with pure excitement.

“Are you serious? You’re in a pop-rock band? That’s incredible!”

When the news was out he would pester you to hear every track you produce and eagerly anticipate your live performances. His support would be unwavering, and he would most certainly never shut up about your talent and his admiration for you to every single person he knows or comes across.

I’m curious what draws you/keeps you following shinee?

i just love them! i have for a long time. i've been listening to their extremely diverse and high quality discography since 2010. their music is the main thing, their songs and performances are genuinely very very very good. they are very talented and their tracks are truly some of the best of kpop, just very good across several genres and styles. there's a shinee track for every person, every emotion, every situation. it's comfort music and daily music for me and their discog is so big it never gets boring. including their japanese discog they have at least 150 songs and with their solo careers its probably like 300, i have yet to listen to every shinee song after 3 years of stanning and i will maybe never run out.

i'm a p recent fan of the rest of their content (variety content, their musicals and acting jobs, livestreams, etc). i started officially stanning (or deokjil in korean) in 2020 when i was miserable because of lockdown and it improved my life and my korean skills a lot. they have over a decade of work that i could find and enjoy and that's just nice to have. i like them because they're funny and good at their jobs and i admire them as artists and public figures. i admire how they relate to their work and their audience, and how they handled their very visible grieving after jonghyun's passing and continue his legacy in their work. watching them grow and mature as people and artists and never lose their original charm, sweetness, and drive is really inspiring to me as someone who wants to be an artist as well. i'm interested in their art, i'm rooting for their careers, and being their fan makes me happy.

hi! i've been reading through your entire blog for the last few months and it's so informative (and inspiring)! i had a question in regards to HYBE and TXT (who i shamefully have a soft spot for ><) - HYBE in their early years tried to market them as the "4th gen SHINee", something fans also latched onto....which I personally feel just shows HYBE doesn't understand the first thing about SHINee beyond "there's 5 of them". what are your thoughts on this?

hi hello!! yea i think that was absolutely hybe's intention with txt, especially since they did that replay cover. and yes i agree it was hybe not understanding what makes shinee shinee. you can very easily assemble a group of five with strong vocalists and a strong main dancer and give them 'experimental' music, but the base facts weren't what made them, it was who they were and the circumstances they were in. sm lucked out finding vocalists like jonghyun and jinki and tbh no one is ever gonna match that level ever again (not jonghyun at least), and it's the same with taemin. the sheer raw talent they had, combined with their drive to improve and innovate combined with coming up in the second big wave of kpop, sm caught lightning in a bottle. and there's no way to recreate it; the system, the conditions, it's all too different now. shinee exists already, you can't make another shinee. it's the same principle as when i talked about how there's going to be no male soloist that will be the 'next taemin,' because even if you found someone who had the exact same level of skill, you can never recreate his exact experiences and circumstances and those are integral to his art. making art is about synthesis, being inspired by others who came before you is a part of that, but you can't just straight recreate. you can try and imitate but in the end that's all you're going to have: an imitation.

So I’m kind of mad because I’m a new BTS fan (I rather not identify as Army cos I just don’t think I fit that mentality) and I’m beginning to feel like I missed their best years?? Not only music-wise but personality-wise as well. Does anyone else feel this way? I look at Vlives and interviews from the past and yes they were probably heavily monitored even then but there was also some degree of spontaneity and their individual personalities really shone through. Now I feel like it’s the same repetitive lines from a script every time they are interviewed and even their behavior in vlives (whenever they could be bothered to do one) seems faker and more robotic. Sometimes they manage to show sparks of their old selves but very rarely nowadays. The only person who still comes across as genuine to me in his interactions with fans is jungkook on his intagram stories, and I bet they’re going to stop those too soon enough. Taehyung also tries, bIess his heart, but there still seems to be something lacking. Jimin is my bias but even I can admit that all we see from him of late (the rare times we even see him) is a carefully crafted idol persona. Even when they claim to be “acting so natural! Wow army we’re not acting like celebrities at all!!” It comes across planned and scripted. I feel so sad and robbed. Maybe it’s the price of their increased popularity and scrutiny, maybe it’s unfair of me to want more, but it honestly sucks. Makes it even worse that they seem to be completely out of inspiration (except when making music for other ppl. I see you Suga) and are focused mostly on charting and awards as opposed to art.And they will likely never know how short they are selling themselves because Army will literally empty their bank accounts for a turd with the BTS logo stamped on it. Hybe will never change their strategy if they keep getting validated financially, the boys will never consider re-evaluating or improving their art if ARMY pukes glitter and rainbows at everything they put out regardless of how bad. I have a tiny glimmer of hope because I have seen more fans openly expressing their dissatisfaction about this upcoming comeback than I ever did before, so maybe there will be just enough of a dip in the sales to cause HYBE to step up their game. A more rational part of me knows however that the sales are going to be through the roof and things are only going to get worse for BTS artistically.

I can relate to how you're feeling. When I started paying attention to them, there was this brief period where things felt really buzzy and exciting. The Vlives were spontaneous and funny, their fashion was A+ and Dynamite was this one off that no one expected would become their dominant style. When BE came out, even tho I didn't like the music (except maybe Stay which idk is still kind ehn), the entire thing of it felt like a step in the right direction. I looked back at the editorial shoots that Tae organized the other day, and they are really good. Probably the last time they looked that good. 👁👄👁

BH doesn't seem to be a place where individuality creativity and personality is allowed to flourish, warts and all. I add in that last bit because at some other kpop labels, we see a lot more imperfection and individuality. People trying things and reflecting on it, success or failure. You also see more genuine interactions between artists. Men working with women, people having disagreements or arguments then resolving them. People trolling one another, lol. With BH brands, because I do sense this with TXT too, unfortunately, things feel neutered to a degree. Though watching TXT be bratty en masse is rather something LOL. The company culture is different at BH/Hybe, and it does feel like even BTS are still tip-toeing. They're in their 9th year now. In SHINee's 7th year (I hope I'm mathing right, lol), they signed a contract that gave them huge freedom and last approval above the board. Jonghyun and the others had been writing songs for a while, but with ODD etc, things became that much more artistic and "shinee". For whatever reason, I still don't see this happening with BTS. Instead, things are becoming well... whatever Butter, PTD and collabs are. Top 40 Billboard pop.

hey can you elaborate on shinee raising taemin when they were trainees? I'm not a shinee fan so I'm curious what was that about. only if you're comfortable to share, no pressure :)

sure i’ll do my best but a lot of it is just general knowledge about the group i’ve accumulated over the years and not like specific events or anything. its not like shinee raised him since infancy or anything but they were definitely there for him in his teen years which is arguably still a very important time developmentally. taemin debuted at 14 while in middle school so he was still a kid and he was living on his own with shinee who were also teenagers at the time like key and minho were a couple years older than him but at least onew and jonghyun were 18. taemin knew he was super young too and from what i remember he was against debuting so early bc he didn’t feel like he was ready and wanted to be with members his own age. so when taemin moved away from his family and into the dorm with shinee, the duty fell on the members to take care of him. since they were the ones who lived with him and spent all their time with him, they practically raised him, and luckily he had good caring members who were willing to take care of a 14 year old because let’s face it 14yos are definitely still kids who aren’t ready to live on their own and most 18yos aren’t ready to take on so many responsibilities either let alone take care of some middle schooler. shinee members would do typical parent duties like taking him to school but also they were there to mentor him and serve as role models bc he was so young and still had so much growing and developing to do before he would become the person he is today. also a big part of his persona now is thanks to their good influence, like back then taemin was determined to be seen as a typical masculine manly man but now he’s known for his exploration of gender and sexuality in his art. and a big part of what helped him evolve between then and now is the fact that key and jonghyun were always very open and accepting of those things and over time taemin became more comfortable with expressing himself too. idk how to conclude this but i wanted to add that i always think of that clip of jonghyun putting sunscreen on taemin at isac. it’s the small gestures that make you realize how much they really cared about looking after him.

I hope I don’t make you uncomfortable when I say that I feel less weird when I see Shawols that still have a emotional attachment that is romantic or even sexual towards Jonghyun. They make me feel like I’m not alone having those feelings and that I shouldn’t be ashamed of it. That was why at first when I got back into SHINee, I was so scared to say that I love him like that until I saw other Shawols calling him sexy which made me blush knowing that I’ve been thinking like that for the longest time.

Thank goodness I make stories (like bias like fan hahah) and some art (kinda) so I could express in my own words about all the things I would do with this man if I could, but I feel like if I did, I would waste your time too much since we would be here all night if I have to 😭

It could just be me being a teenager since I could be very hormonal, but those fantasies are very strong and consistent. If there are any more Shawols that do have those feelings, I’d be happy to know!

it's completely normal to to have those feelings towards jonghyun, especially as a teenager.

he was a beautiful, talented, sexy, thoughtful, and loving individual, so, how could you not? don't feel ashamed about finding him hot. he'd appreciate it lol.

also yes, it's nice to see that people don't surround his memory with sadness and tragedy, or treat him like he wasn't a real person? does that make sense? like, seeing his sexiness and talking about it, is a part of loving and remembering him.

i mean, i'm not gonna look at a shirtless fancam of jonghyun and pretend i don't see his glistening abs xjhdjsksskl.

in regards to sexual y/n type fanfic though, ahhhhh, that kinda stuff makes me uncomfortable regardless of the members it's written about.

that's fine for you if you like to wrote it, anon. it's just not something i enjoy, or really like seeing in the tag.

but, yeah there are definitely plenty of other shawols that feel the same way you do.
