People: maths is such a useless subject, if you ignore the basic additions, multiplications and stuff, maths isn't even relevant in real life.

Incidentally it took historical context to date Dancing Men, but I’m not nearly as mad about that as I am at having to look up publication dates and do maths for Missing Three-Quarter.

i see the sherlock watching is going extremely well, i can hear the excited-cat-chirping-at-bird inside your brain through the screen everytime you post about it, lmao, it's great
no bc these movies shaped me as a person they rewired the neurons in my brain they changed the trajectory of my whole entire life without Sherlock Holmes (2009) there is no Robert Downey Jr. celebrity crush without the RDJ celebrity crush there is no 'hey I should really go check out those Iron Man movies he's in!' without the tentative foray into superhero movies via the IM trilogy there is no shipping Captain America/Iron Man and then like honestly that is where the chain ends but like WOW! what a ride :D

Ivan Campo - Dice Man 2011
Taken from the 2011 album 'What Went Wrong?', Dice Man is a song inspired by the 1970s book 'The Dice Man' by Luke Rhinehart. It tells the story of a man who decides to live his life and make decisions based on the roll of the dice.
Ivan Campo are a British indie-folk band that have been writing, recording, and performing music together for 20 years. In 2023 they released two singles: 'TIME' and 'Golden Hair' whilst they continue to record their next album - a collection of songs based on episodes of Rod Serling's 'The Twilight Zone'.
With their distinct sound of alternative folk, founding members, Adam Shaw, Ben Atha, and Will Rogers were introduced to a wider audience in 2010 when the television series 'Skins' used their song 'The Great Procrastinator' in Episode 1 / Season 4.
The group gathered more attention after Ben Atha was invited to go to Los Angeles in 2016 to play James Bond in the Epic Rap Battles of History YouTube series.
Their last album 'Season of the King' secured the band a 4th live session on BBC 6 Music, as well as a special appearance on prime time Spanish TV programme, Late Motiv, performing their Sherlock Holmes inspired song 'The Bloodhound and the Fox'.
"Dice Man" received a total of 65,7% yes votes!

JAMES BOND REFERENCES IN MORIARTY THE PATRIOT
I am a big fan of James Bond since my early teenage years. I watched every movies and read all books, so when the Moriarty the Patriot manga first started using James Bond references, I basically screamed. And my voice got 100x louder when the iconic My name is Bond. James Bond. scene happened.
I always wanted to write an analysis of YuuMori's James Bond connections, so now here we are.
Tumblr media
First, let's talk a bit about the actual James Bond universe. The character of James Bond - the MI6 agent numbered 007 with a license to kill - got created by Ian Fleming in 1953. He first appeared in the novel called Casino Royale. Fleming wrote 12 novels and two short story collections with the character. The novels soon got movie adaptations, too, the first James Bond movie was Dr. No in 1962, where Sean Connery played Bond. Currently there are 25 Bond movies.
The James Bond movies can be classified into eras by the actor who played Bond. In order, these follow:
Sean Connery
(George Lazenby - but everyone tends to pretend this movie never happened)
Roger Moore
Timothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan
Daniel Craig
The movies didn't come out in chronological order when it comes to James Bond's life-happenings. Most movies can be watched as stand-alones - but the Daniel Craig era tried to built up a storyline, where the movies are tied to each other. The James Bond movies always have an iconic intro, sing by a popular singer of the current era (the last movie's intro song was by Billie Eilish.)
The James Bond movie universe started to fuse with the Sherlock Holmes universe thanks to the Alan Moore comic book series, The League of Extraordinary Gentleman (1999). Professor Moriarty appeared here as M - the title what later ended up with Mycroft. The Elementary series (and somewhat BBC Sherlock) continued this tendency, featuring Mycroft as someone who has ties to the MI5/MI6.
Tumblr media
Professor Moriarty in TLoEG
The Moriarty the Patriot series features most characters who are important in James Bond movies. They are..
M - the leader of the MI6, which role was fullfilled by Albert and Louis.
Q - the inventor who keeps coming up with weapons and cars for James Bond. In YuuMori, Q is Von Herder, the blind mechanic mentioned in the Empty House Conan Doyle story.
Ms. Moneypenny - a secretary working personally for M. In the Daniel Craig era, she started as a field agent, but later moved to do office work. James Bond always gives her flowers and little souvenirs.
When it comes to James Bond, his personality in Moriarty the Patriot is similar to the canon one: loving good cars and guns, flirting with woman (especially Moneypenny) and while it's not vodka martini he orders in the pub when he met with Patterson, he asks for the drink shaken, not stirren. (On the other hand, the Macallan scotch he asks for is a reference to what James Bond drank in the Skyfall movie.)
Tumblr media
The location of the MI6 in YuuMori is also similar to the James Bond movies: underground and underwater in the Thames.
Tumblr media
The headquarter in Skyfall
Tumblr media
The Q-sector
The Man with the Golden Army arc features other references for the James Bond universe. The arc's title refers to the movie/book The Man with the Golden Gun (Roger Moore-era) - the two stories only similarity is that both deal with special guns. In that arc, Sebastian Moran takes on the identity of the 006, Alec Trevelyan. The character originally appeared in the Goldeneye James Bond movie (Pierce Brosnan-era) played by Sean Bean. He had the number 006 and he was the mentor of James Bond (like Moran later on). He seemingly got killed off at the start of the movie (but later returned as a villain).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Alec Trevelyan in Goldeneye
Maybe not an intentional reference, but still interesting: the James Bond movie Tomorrow Never Dies features an evil media mogul, Elliot Carver as a villain who likes orchestrating catastrophic incidents so his newspaper can be the first to write about them, manipulating people that way and gaining control in the media - kind of similar to Milverton (yes, the media mogul Milverton thing is from Sherlock, but still), who was the mastermind behind the Jack the Ripper murders then manipulated the public through the news he created. (I can actually see him orchestrating incidents in order to gain more power and become the King of Media, too.)
Tumblr media
Elliot Carver in Tomorrow Never Dies
We've yet to see the main villain of James Bond: Ernst Stavro Blofeld, (first appearing in the Thunderball book) the head of the crime organization called Spectre. I wander when he will appear in YuuMori, if they appear at all, but I really wish!
Tumblr media
I hope in the next stories YuuMori's James Bond world keeps expanding - that's such an interesting aspect of the series, I love to see more references!

2023's public domain is a banger
Tumblr media
40 years ago, giant entertainment companies embarked on a slow-moving act of arson. The fuel for this arson was copyright term extension (making copyrights last longer), including retrospective copyright term extensions that took works out of the public domain and put them back into copyright for decades. Vast swathes of culture became off-limits, pseudo-property with absentee landlords, with much of it crumbling into dust.
After 55-75 years, only 2% of works have any commercial value. After 75 years, it declines further. No wonder that so much of our cultural heritage is now orphan works, with no known proprietor. Extending copyright on all works – not just those whose proprietors sought out extensions – incinerated whole libraries full of works, permanently.
But on January 1, 2019, the bonfire was extinguished. That was the day that items created in 1923 entered the US public domain: DeMille's Ten Commandments, Chaplain's Pilgrim, Burroughs' Tarzan and the Golden Lion, Woolf's Jacob's Room, Coward's London Calling and 1,000+ more works:
https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2019/
Many of those newly liberated works were forgotten, partly due to their great age, but also because no one knew who they belonged to (Congress abolished the requirement to register copyrights in 1976), so no one could revive or reissue them while they were still in the popular imagination, depriving them of new leases on life.
2019 was the starting gun on a new public domain, giving the public new treasures to share and enjoy, and giving the long-dead creators of the Roaring Twenties a new chance at posterity. Each new year since has seen  a richer, more full public domain. 2021 was a great year, featuring some DuBois, Dos Pasos, Huxley, Duke Ellington, Fats Waller, Bessie Smith and Sydney Bechet:
https://pluralistic.net/2020/12/16/fraught-superpowers/#public-domain-day
In just 12 days, the public domain will welcome another year's worth of works back into our shared commons. As ever, Jennifer Jenkins of Duke's Center for the Public Domain have painstaking researched highlights from the coming year's entrants:
https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2023/
On the literary front, we have Virginia Woolf's To The Lighthouse, AA Milne's Now We Are Six, Hemingway's Men Without Women, Faulkner's Mosquitoes, Christie's The Big Four, Wharton's Twilight Sleep, Hesse's Steppenwolf (in German), Kafka's Amerika (in German), and Proust's Le Temps retrouvé (in French).
We also get all of Sherlock Holmes, finally wrestling control back from the copyright trolls who control the Arthur Conan Doyle estate. This is a firm of rent-seeking bullies who have abused the court process to extract menaces money from living creators, including rent on works that were unambiguously in the public domain.
The estate's sleaziest trick is claiming that while many Sherlock Holmes stories were in the public domain, certain elements of Holmes's personality were developed in later stories that were still in copyright, and therefore any Sherlock story that contained those elements was a copyright violation. Infamously, the Doyle Estate went after the creators of the Enola Holmes series, claiming a copyright over Sherlock stories in which Holmes was "capable of friendship," "expressed emotion," or "respected women." This is a nonsensical theory, based on the idea that these character traits are copyrightable. They are not:
https://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/publicdomainday/2023/#fn6text
The Doyle Estate's shakedown racket took a serious body-blow in 2013, when Les Klinger – a lawyer, author and prominent Sherlockian – prevailed in court, with the judge ruling that new works based on public domain Sherlock stories were not infringing, even if some Sherlock stories remained in copyright. The estate appealed and lost again, and Klinger was awarded costs. They tried to take the case to the Supreme Court and got laughed out of the building.
But as the Enola Holmes example shows, you can't keep a copyright troll down: the Doyle estate kept making up imaginary copyright laws in a desperate, grasping bid to wring more money out of living, working creators. That's gonna be a lot harder after Jan 1, when The Case-Book of Sherlock Holmes enters the public domain, meaning that every Sherlock story will be out of copyright.
One fun note about Klinger's landmark win over the Doyle estate: he took an amazing victory lap, commissioning an anthology of new unauthorized Holmes stories in 2016 called "Echoes of Sherlock Holmes":
https://www.simonandschuster.com/books/Echoes-of-Sherlock-Holmes/Laurie-R-King/Sherlock-Holmes/9781681775463
I wrote a short story for it, "Sherlock Holmes and the Case of the Extraordinary Rendition," which was based on previously unpublished Snowden leaks.
https://esl-bits.net/ESL.English.Listening.Short.Stories/Rendition/01/default.html
I got access to the full Snowden trove thanks to Laura Poitras, who jointly commissioned the story from me for inclusion in the companion book for "Astro noise : a survival guide for living under total surveillance," her show at the Whitney:
https://www.si.edu/object/siris_sil_1060502
I also reported out the leaks the story was based on in a companion piece:
https://memex.craphound.com/2016/02/02/exclusive-snowden-intelligence-docs-reveal-uk-spooks-malware-checklist/
Jan 1, 2023 will also be a fine day for film in the public domain, with Metropolis, The Jazz Singer, and Laurel and Hardy's Battle of the Century entering the commons. Also notable: Wings, winner of the first-ever best picture Academy Award; The Lodger, Hitchcock's first thriller; and FW "Nosferatu" Mirnau's Sunrise.
However most of the movies that enter the public domain next week will never be seen again. They are "lost pictures," and every known copy of them expired before their copyrights did. 1927 saw the first synchronized dialog film (The Jazz Singer). As talkies took over the big screen, studios all but gave up on preserving silent films, which were printed on delicate stock that needed careful tending. Today, 75% of all silent films are lost to history.
But some films from this era do survive, and they are now in the public domain. This is true irrespective of whether they were restored at a later date. Restoration does not create a new copyright. "The Supreme Court has made clear that 'the sine qua non of copyright is originality.'"
https://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/499/340
There's some great music entering the public domain next year! "The Best Things In Life Are Free"; "I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream for Ice-Cream"; "Puttin' On the Ritz"; "'S Wonderful"; "Ol' Man River"; "My Blue Heaven" and "Mississippi Mud."
It's a banger of a year for jazz and blues, too. We get Bessie Smith's "Back Water Blues," "Preaching the Blues," and "Foolish Man Blues." We get Louis Armstrong's "Potato Head Blues" and "Gully Low Blues." We get Jelly Roll Morton's "Billy Goat Stomp," "Hyena Stomp," and "Jungle Blues." And we get Duke Ellington's "Black and Tan Fantasy" and "East St. Louis Toodle-O."
Note that these are just the compositions. No new sound recordings come into the public domain in 2023, but on January 1, 2024, all of 1923's recordings will enter the public domain, with more recordings coming in every year thereafter.
We're only a few years into the newly reopened public domain, but it's already bearing fruit. The Great Gatsby entered the public domain in 2021, triggering a rush of beautiful new editions and fresh scholarship:
https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/14/books/the-great-gatsby-public-domain.html
These new editions were varied and wonderful. Beehive Books produced a stunning edition, illustrated by the Balbusso Twins, with a new introduction by Wellesley's Prof William Cain:
https://beehivebooks.com/shop/gatsby
And Planet Money released a fabulous, free audiobook edition:
https://pluralistic.net/2021/01/18/peak-indifference/#gatsby
Last year saw the liberation of Winnie the Pooh, unleashing a wild and wonderful array of remixes, including a horror film ("Blood and Honey") and also innumerable, lovely illustrations and poems, created by living, working creators for contemporary audiences.
As Jenkins notes, many of the works that enter the public domain next week display and promote "racial slurs and demeaning stereotypes." The fact that these works are now in the public domain means that creators can "grapple with and reimagine them, including in a corrective way." They can do this without having to go to the Supreme Court, unlike the Alice Randall, whose "Wind Done Gone" retold "Gone With the Wind" from the enslaved characters' perspective:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wind_Done_Gone
After all this, you'd think that countries around the world would have learned their lesson on copyright term extension, but you'd be wrong. In Canada, Justin Trudeau caved to Donald Trump and retroactively expanded copyright terms by 20 years, as part of USMCA, the successor to NAFTA. Trudeau ignored teachers, professors, librarians and the Minister of Justice, who said that copyright extension should require "a modest registration requirement" – so 20 years of copyright will be tacked onto all works, including those with no owners:
https://www.michaelgeist.ca/2022/04/the-canadian-government-makes-its-choice-implementation-of-copyright-term-extension-without-mitigating-against-the-harms/
Other countries followed Canada's disastrous lead: New Zealand "agreed to extend its copyright term as a concession in trade agreements, even though this would cost around $55m [NZ dollars] annually without any compelling evidence that it would provide a public benefit":
https://www.newsroom.co.nz/nz-agrees-to-mickey-mouse-copyright-law
Wrapping up her annual post, Jenkins writes of a "melancholy" that "comes from the unnecessary losses that our current system causes—the vast majority of works that no longer retain commercial value and are not otherwise available, yet we lock them all up to provide exclusivity to a tiny minority.
"Those works which, remember, constitute part of our collective culture, are simply off limits for use without fear of legal liability. Since most of them are 'orphan works' (where the copyright owner cannot be found) we could not get permission from a rights holder even if we wanted to. And many of those works do not survive that long cultural winter."

The Bird And The Man
Chapter Five
Tumblr media
Rated Explicit | Warnings: None
Ao3
Chapter Four | Chapter Six
Tumblr media
You did not go to school early in your life, your mother could not afford it no matter what job she got. She taught you everything about life, words came from going to the library during her breaks or dropping you off there because it was safer there than home alone. Luckily, there were a few other kids and a former teacher who did not mind watching over them so long as they behaved.
That older woman with a British accent taught you the power of the pen. She retired her title but not her skills.
You had structure, you learned, and you grew.
As time passed, you started writing stories when you hit your teenage years, many of them short and simple. Until you read a book named Call Of The Abyss by Orpheus. There were others, so many you have read, but those books drew something within you. Lighting a fire within your soul.
When mother passed and your job as a housekeeper was not making enough to both eat and sleep, you tried something different. Had made a few changes, location is everything. Your first job within your skill level was simply writing down words spoken; following around someone quickly, having a sharp hearing, and you learned shorthand that first week of getting that job.
Ghostwriting happened by chance, someone found a story you wrote (it was just a made-up story about Sherlock Holmes for some kids around the street you lived on). He hired you to write his son's book.
You… Never seen such a large amount of money before.
One book, two books, and a third book.
The contract broke the year your employer's brat decided to write the fourth book that was a failure.
He did not read the outlines you made for each book.
Outline, noun, definition one: a line or set of lines enclosing or indicating the shape of an object in a sketch or diagram. Definition two: a general description or plan giving the essential features of something but not the details. Definition three: give a summary of (something).
The quill writes like any other normal quill, yet, the words you cannot control yourself to write every bit are not normal.
Golden Cave, Lakeside Village.
You are out of breath and stumble backward knocking over your chair as you stare at a mess of papers— Written on these papers are the horrors of the miner and his death.
The quill falls to the floor as you hold your head, the painful memories not your own suddenly gone. It hurts a lot, then it fades until only your mind remains.
When you returned from the match with others, Lucky Guy was waiting in your room. He had given you a letter with the infamous seal on it and simply your name on the envelope. You burned the letter as ordered by Lady Nightingale after reading it…
Next, he asked some questions. All seemed strange yet made sense as you started seeing things— Seeing people you never met around you.
The side effect of Outline, she dubbed it, is you will see these memories until you give them a voice. This voice is your medium: pen and paper.
The ability given to you is based on the many tutorial matches Lady Nightingale made you do. Something unique to you, your edge in the matches but must be used wisely. It only can work twice, once as a ‘freebie’ (Lucky Guy’s words), and only lasts as long as you can handle the damage it inflicts upon your consciousness returning to your body.
This is why you were hurt badly when Orpheus found you. Nothing like a hunter's damage but enough to have left you stumbling.
The knock at your door snaps your thought process, you quickly pick the chair up from the floor and clean up the mess of papers stacking them neatly, you check yourself in the mini mirror and-- Whatever, whoever it is can deal with you not looking your best.
“Hello?” Opening the door slightly to see Orpheus, “Oh, good uh… Evening?” What time is it?
“Good evening, Hypnos.” A pleasant smile on his face, “You weren't at dinner so I thought we could eat together?” Holding two plates of food. “If you are available.”
“Ah, yes, of course. Sorry about the mess. The writing process and all!” Laughing bashfully as you open the door and step aside to let him in.
Your room smells of ink, coffee, papyrus, and incense (a gift from the Priestess to help with stress). “You can eat here.” Adjusting the chair to face the desk, “Thanks, Orpheus.” Taking both plates of food and puts his plate down before sitting on the bed with your plate on your lap.
Orpheus looks different without his usual white suit, this one cuts him to look a bit bigger than how the white suit makes him. The vest, the rolled-up sleeves, the small circular glasses, the dark casual dress pants. His mannerisms are the same as he sits down, the man knows well how to start a conversation.
All after the food is done, the butler delivers a bottle of wine and two glasses, you never turn down a nice glass of wine. Helps with digestion.
“You published your book, congratulations.” Cheers as your glass and his glass touch in toast.
“Yeah, I know not the ideal circumstances but I needed it to be out there in some way!” Taking a sip of the rich red wine, “Edgar did amazing on the cover!”
“He did, you should praise yourself too.” Eyes watching before he drinks too, “It is well written.”
“Did you like it?— Wait, no don't tell! Not sure if my confidence can handle a review from someone I admire.” There's a smirk on his face, one that has you looking away as you drink more of your wine, “Anyway, how about you? Any ideas or drafts?”
He leaned back against the chair with his legs open, a relaxed pose different from how seats, well, anywhere in public. “The fifth book of Call of The Abyss is going well.” Stirring the wine gently with the rotation of his wrist, “The topic was about you, however.”
“Well, I'm not very good at that.” Shrugging, “It's out there and that's it.”
“You did splendidly.”
“Oh, you're just being supportive.”
“Hypnos, repeat after me,” Now leaning forward and his hand on top of your knee, “I did splendidly.” And you are very aware of how beautiful his voice is. Or maybe how stern he can sound that makes you feel warm.
“I… I did splendidly.”
“Yes, you did. I do hope you continue to write more.” Getting up from the chair, you do know why you miss the warmth on your knee, “Thank you for allowing me to keep you company. Rarely do I find such a lovely fellow author to converse with.”
“Yes, yes you too!” Oh, wow, you are screaming inside. “Goodnight, Orpheus.”
“Rest well, Hypnos.” He leaves with a glass of wine in his hand, “Enjoy the wine. You earned it.”
Tumblr media
Christmas events are not really your thing. Maybe because most of your childhood Christmas was either you alone with a book or your mother finding ways to keep you both warm. It is strange though, a comfort you did not expect from the after-effects of Outline ability: Norton understands this. The part of being poor with almost nothing to your name.
You do not talk about what you saw, the quill felt invasive and you rather not scare anyone about the ability. Still, at least you know someone understands why you do not participate.
Though you may not take part in the festivities, you have to dress up per Lady Nightingale's request (order). So here you are dressed like Jack Frost. Blue tailcoat suit with snowflake accents, sparkling white shoes, white gloves, and mini top hair clipped to your hair. Blue eyeshadow, eyeliner, lipstick, white freckles with glitter; the woman is very much into details.
It is very over the top.
Before the musically talented survivors and hunters get together to perform, you slip away to take a breather. It can be overwhelming when you see the survivors and some hunters attempt to enjoy themselves. Not everyone here is a monster, they are all actors in a play with no ending.
Depressing to consider but it is a reality you know others have accepted.
The place you call Elysium is beautiful. The fresh snow, the barren tree decorated with snow, the few birds chirping away. Sadly, your paradise is fucking cold! “Tsk.” Annoyed but you smile at the beautiful scenery. “Edgar would like this.” Looking around then your smile grows big seeing the familiar large creature you adore. “Orpheus!” The bird rather than the man approaches you.
Fluffy and doting, you nuzzle the beak part of his mask. Your hand holds his face in place as you cover him in kisses, and most of your blue lipstick. “I missed you.” Because you do and the few chances you are together with him it is always moments you savor.
“Miss. You.” Softly spoken though you wish he wouldn’t hurt himself doing that. His hands hold you by your waist, his head on your shoulders, he is a peace around you. Physical touching is your love language, well, you have many ways to express your love but with him, you find touching him is important to both of you. Maybe he feels like a monster, and he looks like a monster, but you know he is not. It is a feeling and the reason you trusted in that allowed you to become close to him.
The sound of Christmas music echoes throughout the manor, he guides your hand onto his shoulder and the other to hold his hand. You giggle as he guides you into a slow swaying motion, his foot going back on step and you take one step forward.
It is like a dream, the one you see in those silent movies, both of you are quiet as there are no words needed.

Note
Since it's been going around, how would various pulp heroes take on the Death Note murders, and would they survive the ordeal?
Tumblr media
A couple of clarifications:
There is a possibility that Ogon Bat, who is a "God of Justice", is either already some kind of shinigami, or at least able to speak with and interact with Ryuk just fine.
The Golden Amazon and Emilia the Ragdoll could definitely kick Kira's ass and solve the case, but they absolutely should not be aware of the existence of the Death Note, that would just make things worse.
You'd think The Monarch / The Blue Morpho getting his hands on the Death Note would be an equally apocalyptic scenario but I don't think he'd even know what to do with it. He very clearly just wants to get one guy, and became the Blue Morpho so he could kill everyone standing in the way of getting that guy, and he's very clearly been putting off killing that one guy for years now. The Death Note is the solution to a problem he defines his life around trying and failing to solve. He'd be stumped.
Doc Savage, well on one hand of course he would solve the case, he's Doc Savage, if Kira was in a Doc Savage story the whole Shinigami business would have been smoke and mirrors perpetrated by criminals with access to a heart attack inducing machine with a perfectly logical explanation. On the other hand, Doc Savage is one of the only guys in here who is globally famous with his full name and face on the papers, so realistically Kira would nail him very quickly. I'm gonna split the difference by saying Doc would solve the case either way.
Nick Carter does most of the things Doc Savage does except he actually does regularly encounter weird fantastical kitchen sink bullshit on the regular, so I think he'd have a much easier time wrapping his head around the Death Note's particulars.
The Spider would not intuit the mechanics of the Death Note, he probably would not be aware of there even being a thing as a Death Note, but by the end of the story in the last paragraph he would have killed Kira one way or another, very possibly by accident. Same goes for the sword-n-sorcery characters featured there, they would have gotten their kills by the end of it (Spear would probably have the easiest time, he's just a caveman with a giant tyrannosaurus on his side and neither of them have names Light can use to kill them, he's fucked)
Six-Gun Gorilla does have a name that Light could use, but A: He would never find out, B: He would never think a gorilla would be his undoing, and C: There's a decent chance Ryuk would let the gorilla hunt and kill him because it's funny and so would be handing Six-Gun Gorilla the Death Note.
Nyctalope would probably survive Kira's usual method of execution given his heart is artificial, but I don't think he'd be able to crack the case, he's not much of a detective. A lot of these characters were chosen because they have different skillsets that don't make them as suited for uncovering this case regardless of how smart they are.
There is a decent chance that Hugo Danner would figure out Kira by complete accident, and most likely beg Light to find a way to kill him.
Nick and Nora Charles would not solve it but they'd be okay, the case would probably solve itself and they'd laugh it off.
I could also put Blue Morpho, El Sombra, The Whisperer, Black Bat and Hugo Danner in a "Would somehow make the situation worse" category.
Putting the names of the characters below the cut:
Can intuit the mechanics / Can solve the case -The Shadow, Arsene Lupin, Sherlock Holmes, Mexican Fantomas -Heiji Zenigata, Ogon Bat, Thomas Carnacki, Silver John/John the Balladeer, Sar Dubnotal -Nero Wolfe, Tom Strong, Tesla Strong, Nick Carter, Captain Harlock, Golden Amazon -Ducky (Lavender Jack), Rufus Carter, Theresa Ferrier (Lavender Jack), Emilia the Ragdoll, Carmen Sandiego, Rocambole
Can intuit the mechanics / Could not solve the case -The Spirit, The Phantom, Edison Hark (The Good Asian), Lavender Jack -G-8, Green Lama, Peter Cannon, Jules Grandin, Wesley Dodds, Judex -Indiana Jones, Spider-Man Noir, John Blacksad, John Thunstone, Nyctalope, Tintin, Solomon Kane
Cannot the mechanics / Can solve the case -The Spider, The Avenger, Doc Savage, Honoria Crabb -Assane Diop, Conan the Barbarian, Lobster Johnson, Tarzan, Dick Tracy -Flash Gordon, Professor Challenger, Red Sonja, Scrooge McDuck, Imaro -Byomkesh Bakshi, Six-Gun Gorilla, Spear (Primal), Black Terror, The Blue Morpho
Cannot intuit the mechanics / Could not solve the case -Moon Man, Green Hornet & Kato, Lone Ranger, The Scarecrow of Romney Marsh -Phillip Marlowe, Domino Lady, Rocketeer, Miss Fury, Hugo Danner, John Carter -Zorro, Black Bat, El Sombra, Shaft, Sailor Steve Costigan -Darkman, The Whisperer, Nick & Nora Charles, Crimson Clown

Magical wardrobes
Tumblr media
Sherlock fandom. Rosie's in for quite a surprise.
As per usual there are lots of cooing over how big Rosie’s gotten when the Holmes-Watsons arrive at Sherlock’s parents.
“For pity’s sake, mummy. You saw her last month. It’s not like she grows like that now that she’s nine years old,” Sherlock huffs.
Before John gets a chance to scold Sherlock, his mother glares at her youngest son with the infamous Mummy look, and Sherlock shuts his mouth.
“Grandpa and I have a surprise for you,” Mrs. Holmes tells Rosie. “Come upstairs.”
John and Sherlock follow the elderly Holmes’s and Rosie, and they smile at each other when they hear Rosie’s excited scream.
“Do you know anything about this?” John asks his husband.
“Me? Not a clue, John,” Sherlock lies effortlessly.
“Thought as much,” John says, knowing fully that Sherlock’s taking the piss.
Rosie’s eyes are wide and beaming when she turns to face her fathers. John is utterly surprised as he takes in the room. The dark oak beams on the ceiling, make the room look intimate. Emerald green wallpaper covers all the walls, the floorboards have the same hue as the beams. In the middle of the room is a four-poster bed with golden curtains. A gigantic bookshelf is placed on one wall, a chest of drawers on the other, but what Rosie’s most thrilled about is the wardrobe.
“You’ve got to be kidding me,” John mutters under his breath.
Strong arms envelopes him from behind and Sherlock’s curls tickle his cheek when the owner of said curls bends down to John’s ear.
“It took Father and me eight weeks to finish, with a little help from a local carpenter and a skilled artist,” Sherlock whispers. “Just wait until she opens it.”
John turns his head to ghost his lips over Sherlock’s.
“Has anyone told you how amazing you are?” John murmurs, his lips just millimetres from Sherlock’s.
“Once or twice,” Sherlock admits cheekily, kissing John soundly, before entangling himself.
He moves toward Rosie and crouches down in front of her and takes her small hand in his large one.
“Do you want to open it, petal?” Sherlock asks softly.
John must swallow hard when he hears Sherlock using the pet name on Rosie. At home, he only uses her name or Bee, but here in his parents’ house, he tends to call her “flower” or “petal”. It always takes John by surprise and makes him rather emotional.
Rosie looks seriously at Sherlock and nods. She walks over to the grand wardrobe, lifts her hand to the doorknob, then hesitates and turns to the four people looking expectantly at her.
“Go on, dear,” Mr. Holmes urges her.
Rosie bites her lip, and John understands that he needs to step in. His little girl is nervous, and probably afraid to get disappointed of what hides behind those doors.
All of them, including Mrs. Hudson, Molly, even Mycroft, have read “The chronicles of Narnia” to her over the last year. This room is so like the one in the books, and being the daughter of the scientist, Sherlock Holmes and having Mycroft as an uncle, explains her uncertainty now. They’ve made it quite clear that all of it is fiction, written to entertain, not to be compared with her subject books from school.
“Let’s do it together, love,” John whispers and takes Rosie’s hand.
She looks up at him with relief written all over her face, and the lump in John’s throat makes a re-appearance. A familiar hand is placed on the small of John’s back, another on Rosie’s head.
“Ready, Watsons?” Sherlock rumbles affectionately.
Rosie’s about to complain about leaving the Holmes name out, but John nudges her forward.
Neither of them is prepared for what’s been hiding behind the wooden doors. There’s a small recess in the back of the wardrobe. The wall is painted just like the winter landscape from Narnia, with the lamp post and snow-covered pine trees. A yellow armchair, a tea set placed on a small table, a floor lamp and a colourful rug are filling the recess perfectly.
Rosie lets go of John’s hand and walks over to the tableau, stroking her hands and fingers over the surfaces. She seems to be in a trance, totally unaware of the others present.
John turns to Sherlock and hugs him fiercely. Sherlock wraps his arms around him, kissing his hair.
“It’s perfect,” John murmurs against Sherlock’s chest.
Sherlock hums in agreement and they both look over at their daughter, now trying out the armchair.
“How do you like it, dear,” Mrs. Holmes asks, breaking the silence.
Rosie blinks at her. She’s clearly been so engrossed in her own little universe, forgetting all about the outer world.
“I love it!” she exclaims. “Obviously,” she adds under her breath, making Sherlock chuckle quietly, and within moments they’re all laughing heartily.
The Narnia universe was one of my favourites as a child, and it was the first to come to mind when the prompt was revealed. I would've loved to have something similar back then...

On April 7th 1934 Ian Richardson was born.
A great classical actor, he was best known to TV viewers as the Machiavellian Urquhart in House of Cards, in his golden years at the Royal Shakespeare Company from 1960 to 1975, he played a long line of leading roles, television and film later brought Richardson wider renown.
Born as Ian William Richardson the only son and eldest of three children of Margaret and John Richardson in Edinburgh, Ian was educated at Balgreen and then Tynecastle schools, he thentrained for the stage at Glasgow’s College of Dramatic Art, with lightning speed, Richardson, at the age of 24, found himself playing Hamlet. Two seasons at Birmingham were followed by a swift transfer in 1960 to neighbouring Stratford where Richardson became a vital component. of the Royal Shakespeare Company where we was one of the founders.
After leaving the RSC, Richardson became a somewhat nomadic figure, turning up on Broadway as Higgins in My Fair Lady.
For a while he was on the dole — one morning he was even scrabbling round Covent Garden collecting fruit and vegetables. He also suffered a nervous breakdown, as a result of which he was sent to a nursing home run by nuns in Regent’s Park; after three weeks’ treatment he had recovered sufficiently to return home. I suppose it was his time unemployed that took him into a more regular career on the small screen.
From the late 1970′s onwards, he carved out a prosperous career in TV and film. Of course he had already made many TV appearances before now but audiences were peaking just at the right time for the wider public to appreciate his acting skills.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, Private Schultz, Porterhouse Blue were the type of programmes I was watching Richardson in, he also played Sherlock Holmes and Dr Joseph Bell in shows about the detective. Then of course there was House of Cards and the brilliant portrayal of the anti-hero Francis Urquhart. He won the BAFTA Best Television Actor and nominations for the following two series.
In June 2006, he was made an honorary Doctor of the University of Stirling. The honour was conferred on him by the University’s Chancellor, fellow actor Dame Diana Rigg.
His final film appearance was as Judge Langlois in Becoming Jane, released shortly after his death.
During the last 15 years of his life he appeared five times on television acting opposite his son Miles Richardson, though this was usually with one or the other in a minor role

Six years have passed...
You parked your small car outside your large flat complex, switched off the engine and reached around to shake the sleeping toddler splayed out on your backseat. "Zo-zo, wake up, we're here…" You murmured quietly, jolting your daughter till she stretched out and opened her wide brown eyes.
Zoe, your adorable five-year-old, moved her chocolaty hair back from her face and smiled out the window. "Are we going to live here, mummy?" She asked, innocently, turning to face you.
"That's right, little one," you winked, jingling the golden metallic key to your new London home in front of her glittery eyes and pleasantly surprised face at the key in your hand.
It had always been your desire to leave your hometown and move to the big city to become a painter, but when you became pregnant with Zoe, you traded one dream for another. Then, after seeing the comic strips you created for your local newspaper, a large budget from illustrating firm companies who have worked made you reached your another dream job, flower shop. You and Zoe had finally arrived for your new adventure.
Climbing out of the car, you checked on the small trailer tied to the rear of your car and then assisted Zoe in getting out, managing her happy bounces as you both entered the tall building. The elevator was out of commission, but your unit was only on the first floor. "Have you considered what colour you want to paint your room?" You already knew the answer, but it made Zoe enthusiastic about the flat and helped her forget about her homesickness.
"Every colour! Like a big rainbow!" She roared excitedly, wheeling you through the corridor until you reached the white front door of your new flat. Zoe grabbed your arm before you could insert the key. "I want to do it, please!" She pleaded, leaping up and down on your arm.
You smiled as you handed her the key and stood back to watch as your young child climbed up onto her tiptoes to reach the keyhole, peering at it intently. She squealed with delight as she unlocked the door and went inside.
"IT'S SO BIG, MUMMY!" From inside, you could hear her scream.
You removed your shoes and followed her into the open-plan living room and kitchen. It was already fully furnished, which was ideal for you and Zoe starting over, with dark grey velvet sofas, cream walls, and a new modern kitchen. It lacked a few finishing touches, such as photos and books, but it served as a wonderful canvas for painting.
"Do you like it, my love?" You asked, and your daughter swooped up into your arms and sat on your hip in one rapid movement.
"It's fantastic! Mummy!” She shouted brightly once again, wrapping her arms around your neck and clutching you hard, her tiny head tucked into the crook of your neck.
This was it - your fresh beginning. The previous six years had not been easy: being kicked out of your home and moving in with your grandfather, trying to raise Zoe while working to support yourself. But waking up with your gorgeous baby tugging on your hair and seeing her toothy grin as soon as you opened your eyes was reason enough to keep going. You wanted Zoe to have the finest life possible. She was your whole universe.
You carried Zoe around the tiny flat, cradling her close to your body and grinning from ear to ear. Zoe was full of decorating ideas as you proceeded through the rooms, advising you which walls should be particular colours and where her bed should go in her room. The flat didn't yet have any of your stuff, but you knew that once they were there, it would instantly seem like yours.
"Welcome home, little one," you murmured as you stumbled backwards into your bedroom and landed pleasantly on your new bouncy bed. "Welcome back home." You started tickling Zoe after you were settled on the bed, enjoying how loud her giggles filled the room. It sounded like home right away.
Zoe sat up on your stomach, a troubled expression on her gorgeous face. "Where's Mr Snuggles?" It was rare for Zoe to be without her cherished fuzzy bear. "We can't move in without Mr. Snuggles!" She was hopping off the bed and racing out of the room in an instant, most likely heading back down to the car to grab her teddy.
"Home sweet home," you whispered quietly, giving yourself a minute of calm before shuffled off the bed to join up with your daughter.
Tumblr media
"Mummy, are you sure Mr Snuggles can't come to school with me?" Your daughter questioned sweetly as the two of you approached Zoe's school's roadway. She was a little nervous because it was her first day.
You smiled down at her as you looked down. She looked gorgeous in her new school uniform, complete with a red and white frock and knee-high socks. You'd already snapped a million shots of her this morning. "But I only enrolled you in school?" You mocked. "Mr Snuggles will not have a desk or a peg to hang his belongings."
She looked up at you and began batting her eyelids. "But he really wants to learn, too," she pleaded, attempting to melt your heart with her charm.
'Like her father,' a small voice in the back of your mind muttered, echoed.
For a brief moment, your heart slowed, as it did every time Zoe did something that reminded you of your best friend, Sherlock. She began to resemble her father as she grew older, from her inability to sit still or stop talking to the way her smile or laugh lighted up her entire face. She possessed all of his best attributes and wrapped them in a pretty little bow with some of yours.
You eventually caved, giving up to what she desired. "Okay… Mr. Snuggles can go to school," you sighed.
Zoe yanked her hand away from yours and began spinning in circles on the pavement, hugging her teddy and cheering joyously. "Thank you, Mummy," she laughed as she wrapped her arms around your legs.
You brushed your fingers through her unkempt hair and began rushing her down the street. Zoe's first day at her new school began in less than ten minutes, and you didn't want her to be late. "But he can only stay for today, deal, little one?"
She nodded enthusiastically, grasping your hand and nearly dragging you up the street to the school's gates. You should have guessed Mr Snuggles would calm her fears.
When you arrived at the gates, there was a constant stream of children racing inside the building, laughing and playing with one another, while their parents stood back and observed. You knelt in front of your daughter, adjusted the strap of her rucksack and looked her in the warm brown eyes. "Do you want Mummy to come with you to the classroom?" You said, caressing her rosy cheek in your palm.
"Don't worry, Mummy!" She exclaimed, shaking her head away from your grasp. "I'm a big girl!"
You exhaled quietly, thinking of how mature your daughter had become. At her last school, she nearly clamped herself onto your leg and refused to let go for half an hour. But there were no tears or tantrums this time. "Be a good girl today," you whispered quietly, kissing her on the cheek.
With a heavy heart, you stood up and wrapped your arms about your body as your little one skipped through the school gates, pausing every ten feet to look back and wave at you before disappearing into the building with a bright smile on her face.
From the moment you found out you were pregnant, it had always been just the two of you. She was a big girl now, brave and confident as she skipped into her new school. You'd have to stop calling her 'little one' soon.
After ensuring that she was safe in the school, you returned the way you came and proceeded to your car. Today was more than just Zoe's first day.
You arrived early at your flower shop after managing the city's traffic: a tall grey structure surrounded by a hundred others that all looked the same. You decided to go to a nearby coffee shop and get a caffeine fix before your first day began. You quickly approached the queue, placed your order and then stood back to wait for your drink.
“Y/N?”
Apart from a few people you met when renovating the shop and a handful of neighbours in your apartment block, you didn't know anyone in the city, which is why you were astonished to hear someone calling your name from behind you.
In the end, it was the last person you expected to see. “Sherlock?” For the first time in six years, you faltered in shock, your gaze resting on your best friend.
"Hi there," he responded nervously. He's wearing a wonderful suit with a gigantic coat and a blue navy scarf, his curly hair is even curlier, and everything is exactly as stated in newspapers.
But there was no response from you. You watched the way he scratched the back of his head in many different kinds of emotions beneath your chest until he stepping closer and wrapping you in his warmth embrace.
Your eyelids closed as your ears completely caught his low sigh; all you realise is that his palm stroked your hair and you felt your head snuggle against his neck.
That's when you began hugging him back, as the air over you two appeared so tighten to breathe.
