an incomplete list of sapphic-coded moments, themes, and, subtext relating to Wednesday and Enid in the Netflix TV show WEDNESDAY in chronological order.
OR a list of why this show is gay AF and why Wenclair would be a great canon ship.
Please note that there is a lot of different kinds of ways to interpret events in this show. This interpretation is from a mid to late 20′s lesbian cis woman. A lot of nuances that I touch on may not make sense to non-lesbians and straight people but please don’t dismiss them immediately.

Wednesday’s Child is Full of Woe: EP 1.
The Lesbian Sweater
Enid is wearing a sweater that looks exactly like the sunset lesbian flag. There is no way that the costume department did not know what they were doing.
*Edited to add that Bobby Soutar, one of the co-designers is a gay man. This further shows that the sweater lesbian colors were intentional.
Rejecting Traditional Family Structure
Wednesday is shown to actively reject the heteronormative expectations to become a housewife and have a family. Even though the Addams Family is creepy and kooky, Mysterious and spooky,and all together ooky, they still have the traditional family structure. Mother & Father, and children.
The act of this rejection sets Wednesdays desires up to not be like her parents. This can be interpreted many different ways. Due to heterosexual representation being the standard depiction, a lot of lesbians and sapphic women grew up rejecting the traditional family structure. When compulsory heterosexuality is experienced, that can also manifest as the desire to not want to love or not thinking they could experience love.
Body Language Attraction: Leaning In.
This is an extremely common display of attraction. It’s extra important to note that Wednesday is ALSO leaning towards Enid. This scene is immediately after they meet for the first time.
Body Language Attraction: Physical Proximity.
This one is similar to the one above but I would like to touch more on this.
Physical Proximity between Enid and Wednesday is constant throughout the show. The reason why it is sapphic-coded and not just female friendship is the fact that Wednesday is well, Wednesday. As a general rule, she desires solitude over companionship, and does not do physical displays of affection or emotions. Other friendships depicted between her and others do not have the same level of closeness. Wednesday even physically flinches away from even her mother air-stroking her arm.
Dismissing Love Interests
In later episodes Enid is shown to be infatuated with Ajax, yet in episode 1 she dismisses him without hesitation and doesn’t really show an interest in him. It doesn’t fit with how she acts with him the rest of the season. As the show progresses, Wednesday and Enid become closer - It is not entirely impossible to reason that Enid is panicking over possible attractions and feelings for her roommate and to counter this throws her interest into a non-threatening and non-masculine guy. This is a common experience for people dealing with comphet.
I’d also like to add in that throughout the series, Wednesday constantly rejects the advances of men in her life.
Wednesday “Social Media is awful” Addams finding a way to read/watch Enid’s vlog.
Let’s just appreciate the fact that as soon as she could, she went out of her way to access Enid’s vlog the same day they met.
Enid’s reactions to the Fencing Challenge.
I think it’s important to note the facial expression on her face wincing after the 2nd round, and looking disappointed when Wednesday lost the 3rd round.
Wednesday Opening Up to Enid/Enid being a safe person for Wednesday to trust.
The WHOLE balcony scene. Wednesday actively shows interest in Enid and questions her after noticing she’s self-concious. She continues engaging in the conversation. And then when Enid explicitly states that she is upset, Wednesday shares an event that shaped her life and who she is. This is “Emotion equals weakness” Wednesday sharing a painful memory to someone she barely knew.
I’d like to also point out that Wednesday is very Neurodivergent coded and one of the ways Neurodivergent people show empathy and that they care and are listening and understanding others, is to share relatable experiences.
WEDNESDAY WAS BEING EMPATHETIC TOWARDS A GIRL SHE HAD JUST MET AND LET HERSELF BE VULNERABLE.
And Nevermores queen of gossip vlogger assures Wednesday that she won’t misplace the trust and vulnerability Wednesday shared with her.
Bonus GIF included of a less than enthusiastic response from Enid getting her single room back.
Distrust of Tyler/Respect of Wednesday’s autonomy.
Enid questions Wednesday’s trust in Tyler but unlike other characters, accepts Wednesday’s answer without trying to fight back. She takes her at her word and respects her decisions.
Respectful of Boundaries
The great thing about how Enid treats Wednesday is that she constantly pushes Wednesday to get out of her comfort zones while also respecting the boundaries Wednesday puts into place. She acknowledges them and doesn’t get upset. And she doesn’t just give up either - She tries again knowing full well she may get that hug rejected. This is the second time in this episode that she attempts to go for a hug and allows Wednesday the room to say no, and respects the decision.

Xavier knows, he just does. And so does the actor Percy “If she’s gonna be romantic with anybody, it’s got to be with Enid.” Hynes White.

its isolating being a lesbian in a 'queer' friend group like its just people talking bout men all the time. there is one girl whose lesbian but the only gay thing she talks about is her pride merch and heartstopper.
No because the way my one "lesbian" friend was obsessed mlm shows like Heartstoppers and Young Royals and later came out as an Achillean trans masc and traded the lesbian flag for the toothpaste one on their bookbag. Like it's fine to live ur truth but I feel like so young people use lesbian as like a transition phase to bisexual or trans and it makes me sad.
Also no tea no shade I love Alice Oseman but Heartstopper is boring AF! If it was straight no one would watch it, let's bffr! Meanwhile shows like First Kill and Warrior Nun can stand on their own with no representation, but get cancelled. It's because everyone only sees male characters as loveable and will obsess over them only, in my experience it's only sapphics who can appreciate well written female characters and not just call them "mother" or "girlboss" while they move on to write the next essay about their white male blorbo. I can't even be mad at authors and showrunners for not creating more complex female characters because it's not what sells!
And don't get me started on how many young gays can only express their identity through "pride merch" aka capitalism. and annoying memes like limp wrist, fruity, zesty. That's not their fault identity capitalism has messed up gen z in general, but it's still isolating.

Look, I'm really gay and a simp for Mikasa. Also, I've been obsessed with Royalty tropes. This thing came out of my brain as a result. Hope you enjoy it, I guess.
⚠️ Warning ⚠️: Mikasa being a chaotically cute and oblivious, me being gay af and simping for her. Eren being clueless but supportive nonetheless. OH, this is very sapphic. Not proofread at all, that's just a self indulgent story that I vomited on my phone's keyboard
Princess reader who gets an arranged marriage with prince Eren Jaeger. Both Eren and the princess are miserable with this situation. Eren wants to be a traveler and explore the world's hidden mysteries. The princess wants to be free from the duty of marriage and child bearing.
Unfortunately, princess and Eren get married. They make an agreement to act as a couple only to the public, but never in private. They become good friends with time and learn to appreciate each other's companies and advice.
One day, an assassination attempt endangers the princess's life and Eren decides that she needs more personal protection. He sends a letter to his sister, Mikasa, a well known strong shield maiden and also a very trusted person. Mikasa agrees to look after her brother's wife.
What Mikasa didn't expect is to find the princess extremely ethereal and beautiful. She tries to play it off as normal because everyone simps for a princess from time to time (right? It's normal, right?).
Princess is utterly in love with Mikasa. As soon as Eren introduced his sister, the princess was too focused on how beautiful and divine the dark haired woman looked. That moment the princess knew she had to get that cutie for herself.
The princess wore the most beautiful dresses, perfumed herself, braided and decorated her hair. She made sure to look pretty for her shield maiden. Everyday they would go for a peaceful stroll around the gardens, talking about the gossip from the previous day. In the afternoons, the princess would take Mikasa to the library and read books with her. In the evenings, the princess insisted that Mikasa sat beside her during dinner. Eren was a little confused but happy that his sister and wife were friends.
One day, Mikasa has to travel for a small mission assigned by her brother. The princess gets really sad, but understands it. Eren assures her that the trip will only last a week and Mikasa will be back very soon. The princess patiently waits, and waits and waits.
After two weeks, a group of shield man come back with a wounded Mikasa and all hell breaks loose. Eren is worried because his sister is almost invulnerable and the princess is worried she won't make it. Fortunately, Mikasa is stable and will recover soon.
During her recovery, the princess wouldn't leave Mikasa on her own. She takes care of her wounds and feeds her when she isn't feeling strong enough to do so. While Mikasa sleeps, the princess kisses her forehead and tells her "I love you" thinking the shield maiden is not listening.
Mikasa of course hears that, but doesn't say anything because she is confused and not sure she wasn't hallucinating. She recovers and everything goes back to normal, but those three words torment the shield maiden's mind.
Mikasa looks for signs that the princess might have romantic feelings for her. All the while she feels guilty because Eren is her husband. She doesn't want to hurt her brother's feelings by pursuing his wife.
All the while Eren is a little too dumb to notice both women are clearly head over heels for one another. It takes Armin to actually tell him "bro, they're in love we have to do something because I can't take this anymore" (let's say Mikasa likes to barge Armin's chambers and complain that the princess is so cute, and pretty, and lovely).
Eren and Armin make a plan (more like Armin does all the planning and Eren is the moral support) to send both women to a very beautiful and secluded castle owned by the Jaeger family. They tell both girls is a safety measure and Mikasa completely agrees to take the princess there.
The princess and her shield maiden arrive on the castle and have a lot of fun walking around and exploring the library and the surrounding forest. They decide to have a picnic and end up kissing, with only the sunset as their witness.
When they arrive back home, Eren and Mikasa have a conversation. Eren tells his sister he doesn't have feelings for the princess and that he would be more than happy to have his sister and friend be married.
In the end, Mikasa and the princess get married with Eren and Armin as witnesses (Armin got his license to marry and unmarry people). Eren and princess are still married to the public, but in private she is Mikasa's wife.

Intersex Book Club reviews The Fortunate Fall
For our June book pick we read *The Fortunate Fall, *a cyberpunk novel from the mid-1990s written by a trans intersex author (Raphael Carter). Intersex author Bogi Takács has argued that the book deserves being read for its intersex themes, which have gone underappreciated. We had a lovely discussion about the book and here are some notes summarizing our reactions. Spoilers ahoy!
INTERSEX THEMES
The book has two characters who self-describe as hermaphrodite in ways that are fairly minor. The intersex-ness of this book does not come from centring on explicitly intersex characters but instead through themes that speak to intersex experiences. (Please note: the h-term is generally considered a slur against intersex people. This is the language used in a mid-1990s book by an intersex author.)
A major theme of the book was coercive medical procedures and the maiming of one’s body. Characters such as the protagonist are described as having literal holes in them. The State requires invasive body modification of queer people to “suppress” their queerness and enforce conformity.
Which gets to the suppressor chips. In the end of the book the main character has her suppressor chip removed which brings back her memories of a previous sapphic relationship and who she was before she became a “camera” (ie. a journalist/influencer). We read the suppressor chips as a metaphor for how so many intersex people have their medical histories hidden from them. We also talked about how this could be read as a metaphor for people who deny their own queerness (e.g. transness, gayness, etc)
This will come up again when we read The Deep by Rivers Solomon but there’s a trend in intersex literature to portray intersex people as sea creatures. One of our hermaphrodite (their term) characters refers to themself as a mermaid and has a mental link with a humpback whale. We talked about how deep sea creatures are a great vehicle for writers to explore both the strangeness and the naturalness of being intersex. The ocean is intensely familiar but also foreign, and features animals whose sex determination schemes are far more fluid (ha) than us humans.

POSITIVES
OMG THAT ENDING
A uniquely devastating sapphic romance
The viscerality of jacking one’s brain into a digital set up. A lot of modern cyberpunk has paved over the physicality and the grotesqueness of body modification and this book did not shy away from it.
A book that argues for animal rights in a technological society. It got us talking about what an internet that serves other animals would be like.
Some excellent lines such as “The state allows you to hate it but only enough so as not to threaten it.” and “You can’t just show people the evil of the word, people will turn away. You need to show them hope.” which got us talking about activism and how to make political change
NEGATIVES
This book is pessimistic AF
No real denouement. Could be intentional to make the ending weigh on you more but also means less sense of what happens at the end.
The whale is never given a name! 😭
Disability as worse than death trope
Afrofuturism felt kinda weak; Africa is one country and it has surprisingly little effect on other cultures despite supposed superpower status
WHAT WE THOUGHT THE BOOK MIGHT BE TRYING TO SAY
We spent a bunch of time speculating as to authorial intent with the book. Here are some things we brainstormed:
In a totalitarian world where you’re an influencer and people literally tune into your brain, self-preservation comes at all costs including those you love.
Queer romance can be deep and tender, and societal prejudice can cause real hurt (remember: book came out in mid-1990s).
A cautionary tale to not back down from your love or your principles.
Huge leaps in technology won’t change social structure. We can invent technology to experience what other people have experienced and it alone won’t lead to increased acceptance of queers or protection of the environment/animals. (Again, remember: written in mid-1990s, a time of legit optimism about the internet.) From the book: “The Net should be the most democratic form of communication that the world has ever known…. But instead it is being used to enforce an official vision of humanity.”

HOW IT HELD UP
Predicted: the enshittification of the internet

It's weird how many people are pro-Xena killing Gabrielle in Bitter Suite. Like Gabrielle didn't try to kill herself with poison at the end. Or love Solan too. Solan loved Gabrielle-he even picked her weapon. A true tragedy, I'll give the writers that. I think they went straight to One Against an Army after to give fans a break lol.
But Y'all!... trying to save your not cute, demon baby is not an act worthy of murder. Also, triggering af for abuse victims.
It's why season 3 is NOT my favorite. But the musical is solid af. Very Danny Elfman. And on point since Xena has been a wild show from the get. But yea I guess being cool with killing women is historically a thing. As a sapphic, I don't get it.
SUPER homophobic if you're gay and all for Gabrielle murder. Yea you can be queer and homophobic. Have you met terfs?
But anyways, Gabrielle is precious and my boo and I would never. Xena's worst moments are when she hurts Gabrielle. I wish they had more episodes of Xena beating herself up over it. She should lol.

Guillermo: He's a gay man. I've had the headcannon before it was even confirmed. I specifically think he's transgender,has had top surgery while he was Nandor's familiar and a phalloplasty that was funded by money he stole while working at Nadja's club lol. Good for him. I think he's stealth for the most part. I also think he's involved in the gay bear and kink community. He's a trans bear who's hoping to grow a nice beard someday. He's very jealous of Laszlo and Nandor.
Nandor: I think he's multisexual in general and would identify with bi, pan, poly or omni. I think Nandor is a cis man but I don't think he aligns his gender with the western ideas of gender but more with the genders within the Iranian culture he grew up in. He would definitely say that he's genderblind when it comes to attraction
Laszlo Cravensworth: I think he's a gender non-conforming cis man who identified as bisexual for years but also would identify as pansexual too later on. He's also canonly objectum. He might be in love with his piano and gets deeply aroused by it at times. Gender is a performance and he's going to have fun with it damn it
Nadja: I think shes a queer cis women. She's gone through countless identities for her sexuality and identifies with each and every one simultaneously. She's sapphic, lesbian, queer, bisexual and pansexual. She would describe her attraction to women as lesbian and I could see her rocking with the term bipan-lesbian. She's gay af
Colin Robinson: It is asexual and nonbinary if you want the short answer. The longer answer is that he's graysexual, demiromantic and panromantic. His gender is specifically that he's a demiboy/demimale who partially identifies with being male but also a gender that's nonhuman and alien. He doesn't identify as transgender sense it doesn't feel any specific gender dysphoria or bodily euphoria, it's just gender. Marwa: She's pansexual and cis. She also feels intellectual attraction, aural attraction and attraction to one's voice/accent.
The Djinn: He's cis and pansexual. He's also a repressed virgin.
The Baron: He is intersex but idenfies as male. If you ask about his sex he'll assume you want to fuck him so be careful what personal things you ask 😁 if you don't want to fuck him mind your business. He doesn't identify with any sexuality. He just fucks as he pleases.
The Sire: The Sire is agender and his sex is a mystery don't try to find out you can't don't even entertain the idea. The Sire doesn't fuck with sexuality labels either. He's just chillin.
Evie Russell: She's a cis woman who's asexual and aromantic. She's also cupioromantic because she likes the act of dating and traditional romantic gestures but doesn't feel attraction at all.
Simon The Devious: He's a cis guy who's bi and having a steamy secret affair with Laszlo.

(there are so few shows I actively watch that it makes this easy af)
1. the xfiles - I cannot overstate how much this show characterised my entire childhood but especially ages 14-16 ish. the space it took up in my brain was phenomenal. I should have been studied. haven't watched it in a while but I guarantee if you said an episode name I could tell you what happened in it.
2. agents of shield - I stand by this one. was the first season (or at least the first half of it) a bit lackluster? yes it was very much so. But as soon as they told the rest of the mcu to go fuck itself and stopped including the tie-ins it got really good. seasons 2/3/4 were some of the best. then it got tired in season 6 imo... but THEN it had one of the best concluding seasons of any show ever. good for them. not very gay though - only real criticism - and yet still gayer than the rest of the mcu.
3 You - me? watching a show with a male lead? improbable but not impossible. he's so awful and so so funny and I looovved Love (no surprises there). the new series being set in London was very jarring for me lmao but the characterisation of the british upper class was spot on tbf.
4. His Dark Materials - I'm a little obsessed with Ruth Wilson in this show like idc that everyone says she doesnt look like Marisa like she just IS marisa. the first season rearranged my brain chemistry.
5. Warrior Nun - idc if this makes me a stereotype like yes im a lesbian and I fucking loved that stupid show so much and I cried when they cancelled it. also I know some fans argue it wasn't campy but is WAS and it was GREAT like idc that sometimes the plot was weak it didn't even matter because the characters and their connections were everything. and just... Avatrice my beloved..... I have never seen a sapphic couple written with so much genuine love and care. like you actually get to see them fall in love?? believably???? and they're good people who are good for/to each other????? it fucked me up. I miss it so much like I love my messy gays too don't get me wrong but I'm also so scared I'll never see rep like them again rip.
