🍉 Favorite trope? What’s a cliche that you just love?
Oh my god, there's so many. Found family is an evergreen trope that I will never in a million years get tired of, and if you've ever read any of my shit over the years you probably already knew that, lmao. One that I'm finding myself more partial to recently though is like, the older male character who starts out as a horrible grouch but mellows over time and becomes, not cuddly, exactly, but like. Friendly. Almost affectionate, maybe. Can't get enough of that right now. 👌
🍑 Overused words or phrases that just make your eye twitch?
This is going to sound horribly snobbish but a lot of the words and phrases that annoy me are ones that have been popularised by fanfic writers, lmao. I write fic myself and I'll go to my grave still insisting that it's every bit as valid and requiring of skill as original writing, but there are a handful of very specific turns of phrase that are not found anywhere outside of fanfiction and many of them irritate me deeply.
Most of them originated from young, inexperienced fic writers who wrote the same way as they spoke, or tried to, which... I get. I get it, but that doesn't mean that it's correct or good to read. An example I could give is that thing fic writers do where they go:
"And [name]? Was not impressed."
... for example. I fucking hate that. I get it, I get why someone wrote that like that and why it's been picked up by hundreds of thousands of other inexperienced fic writers since. That's how you say that out loud! That's how you say it! But I fucking hate it. Writing and speaking are fucking different, god damn it. You can't just write shit (outside of written dialogue, obviously) in the same way as you would say it out loud and expect it to make sense or be good to read.
There are a lot of fanfic-exclusive writing quirks like that and I hate all of them, lmao. Please, I'm begging you, come up with better ways to phrase things that make sense when they're written down. Please.
