What Is and Isn't a Fish: a List
A list of the animals I discussed in my fish essay, but for those who don't want to scroll through paragraphs of text to find out if an animal is or isn't a fish. Just CTRL+F your way through here!
I'll add onto here more animals whenever I get asked about them being fish. See my fish essay here!
Some notes before you proceed:
Yes, all tetrapods are fish! We are phylogenetically fish, as we are and our ancestors were lobe-finned fish! "Fish" in the phylogenetic sense is a paraphyletic group if you try to exclude tetrapods, so it is frankly impossible.
How come tetrapods aren't listed as fish then? Long answer, read my essay. Short answer, me and other fish accounts tend to operate on the morphological definition of fish, so does most of the world. Here I use the morphological definition of "fish".

Okay, you know what, I need to channel certain anxiety goth demon here for a moment and hype certain angel who happens to be abysmal at human magic tricks and likes collecting old books, because I feel like even the people defending Aziraphale are not giving him nearly enough credit or agency.
You know who actually came up with the idea (on the fly, I might add) that saved Job's children?
The Marvelous Mr. Fell, that's who.
Sure, Crawly/Crowley was always planning to spare them, but Aziraphale is the one who suggests that maybe Bildad the Shuite is an expert on human births. You know. Like the one that happened in the Garden of Eden. *wink wink nudge nudge*
He's the one who sneaks the salamander children into Job's robes.
He's the one who changes them back at the right moment.
He's the one who lies to Gabriel to seal the deal.
Between the two of them, during the bullet catch sequence, Aziraphale is the calm one. He's actually more calm about Crowley pointing a gun at his face than he is when he initially walks onto the stage by himself. And he continues to be calm even when Furfur directly threatens both Crowley and himself. He stays calm, and he switches the picture and saves them both.
Aziraphale read all of Agnes Nutter's 4000 prophecies in less than a day, annotated everything, figured out where Adam was, who he was, where Armeggedon was happening, and even charted things out on maps, entirely on his own.
He also researches the rumors about Everyday showing up on the Jukebox in the Resurrectionist Pub, and figures out that Gabriel was on Earth preforming a miracle in company with someone else. He runs out of time to connect the rest of the dots, but really, his sleuthing skills with newspapers and books are off the charts.
Edit (I forgot one and it's one of my faves): We also see how competent he is when he's getting ready to host the ball. He knows how to get what he wants from people. If he can't win them over by just being nice, he knows exactly what to tempt offer in order to get them to agree. Crowley is just following him around like :O!!! Because watching the bae actually being good at stuff is attractive entertaining!
AND perhaps most tellingly of all, when Crowley plays the part of Aziraphale during the switch, he's so SO brave. He's collected. He's polite. He holds his head up and walks into the fire.
Aziraphale is so smart! He's courageous! He keeps his cool under pressure! That is the way that Crowley sees him, and Crowley is the person who knows him best!!
We don't know why Aziraphale chose to leave with the Metatron, yet. But even if he was completely tricked (which I personally sort of doubt), it definitely wasn't because he's dumb and doesn't know what's going on around him.

hey i love what you wrote about the gorgon sisters! I love the cliffhanger too! Can i ask on what headcanons or ideas do you have on Yandere Medusa, Arachne, and Shaula Gorgon to sibling!reader when they all used to live together or something like that? I'm not sure if you are doing requests but if you aren't that's fine. I just wanna know your thoughts if thats ok.
Tumblr media
Living with the your Gorgon Sisters (1)
Medusa Gorgon the feared Snake
Shaula Gorgon the conniving Scorpion
Arachne Gorgon the infamous Spider
And the forgotten one (Y/n) Gorgon: the salamander
You paled in comparison to your sisters and their evergrowing reputation
Taking on the DWMA and attempting to birth a Kishin to plunge the world into madness
Such feats could only be done by the Gorgon sisters right
And you the forgotten sibling left to stir in the mock terrarium you’ve been given
Since you were young you’ve found that your siblings often fought for a type of ownership of you
Constantly fighting to keep you in their designated “tanks”
Sealed from the outside world
From the exclusive witch world
They unanimously decided they’d keep you from ever-evolving or even fighting
All they wanted you to do was swim in an oversized tank
Just waiting to be slinked back to when they need reviving or wish to play with the helpless baby
It was only until recently that they weren’t aggressively fighting over you
Now a routine had been established
A routine that meant varying levels of freedom:
Tumblr media
Shaula Gorgon
“Well, aren’t you pleased to be in my care!”
The youngest of the three is the worst one to be stuck with.
Most likely to leave you in an actual tank
Because she’s not as powerful as the others
She’s so insecure that her possessiveness is clouded by her desire to show off her seniority
Often visiting your hidden enclosure to monologue boast about her latest project
And like clockwork, you poke holes in her schemes
“Doesn’t it take one student to really catch on to your method?”
“Quiet! I don’t expect you to understand!”
“But the eye thing is really obvious don’t you think—”
“Shut up!”
Tumblr media
Medusa Gorgon
“I told you I’d have you eventually. Now do you want to test my strength?”
She is one of the cruelest and most competitive
She doesn’t really talk with you, she talks at you
Forcing you to kneel as she pats your head
Mulling about her latest plans to resurrect kishin asura
About the madness she wants to create
As well as how much better she can be than Arachne
Does actually let you out forcing you to follow closely beside her as she tortures witches and meister-weapon duos alike
When you’re threatened during her battles its like a switch
She gets relentlessly violent and irritated
Which unfortunately persists after her enemy is dead and gone
Best to find someone else to play with her or else it’ll be whoever else she’s seeing next poorCrona
“Did you see that (Y/n)? They thought they could touch you with me here, don’t you see what happens when you leave my side.”
“Sorry.”
“It’s only the beginning. This time stick close or you’ll be going back to your tank.”
Tumblr media
Arachne Gorgon
“You sleep soundest with me here.”
Your time is divided between her webs and your lake
Depending on the time period she might just restrict you to only sleeping within her arms
She’s always been like this babying you through and through
Cooing about how she’ll have to leave
With promises of her return
She adamantly refuses to let you leave whatever safe room she’s decided on
Even going so far as to drug you to sleep when she isn’t around
All those in Arachnophobia follow her lessons, no harm to you than necessary to restrain you
And when Arachne returns she’ll have a proper punishment for you
“No lake for a week, my spiderling.”
“But I–”
“It’s what you deserve, (Y/n) for misbehaving.”

Slugcats are incredibly comfy to draw when my brain is fried. Please enjoy them all
Also below's a bunch (aka a paragraph for each how'd that happen) of headcanons and thoughts about my designs because the brain rot hasn't really stopped
Survivor
The most average slugcat to ever slugcat. So instead I'll say that I decided to give the slugcats whiskers (that are probably closer to barbels on fish or the sensory tentacles on slugs). Also I know they're probably slimy in canon but nothing can stop me from giving them fluff. I like to think that slugcats are prone to weird mutations that lead to a very varied species and makes them easy to purpose.
Monk
Monk is about as average as Survivor except being a little smaller than usual for their age. I don't have many strong headcanons in the way of gender for these guys but I like to think of Survivor and Monk as big sister and little brother to parallel Moon and Pebbles in a way.
Hunter
Just having the absolute worst time. Any wounds Hunter receives quickly rot and stop healing and they are pretty much always in pain. When it gets really bad the rot cysts and tentacles begin to grow and sometimes attempt to eat Hunter themself. They know that it was No Significant Harassment's mistake that led them to getting the rot but aren't really mad about it. They just have a sort of a tired and somewhat grumpy “it is how it is” kind of attitude about pretty much everything.
Gourmand
Gourmand is from the same clan as Survivor and Monk and so is also fairly average, their standout traits being their height, size, and intelligence. Their also a little fluffier than average for maximum comfy hugging potential. Well respected in their clan and considered a legend of sorts for their journey into Five Pebble's facility grounds.
Artificer
Artificer's explosive abilities and abnormally large size are due to a combo of weird mutations and diet. The dark red marks are a mix of dried blood, scar tissue, and general explosive damage. She has damaged her hearing via explosions, has one working eye, and blown off most of her whiskers. She is practically running blind and is literally too angry to die. Fluffy but rough and course and just awful to hug at this point.
Spearmaster
Spearmaster has spines growing all along their back, but only the ones of its tail are strong and thick enough to use as spears. Their whiskers are also thinner and more similar to their spines (or cat whiskers in a way). Their ears are also cropped (like a dog's) and Seven Red Suns gave them a small coat to distinguish them as a messenger. Underneath on their chest is a small scar that marks the pearl's location (that is very quickly a big scar once Pebbles commits the worst surgery in Rain World history).
Rivulet
Rivulet is from a subspecies of semi-aquatic slugcats with increased lung capacity, seal-like fur, and a tail fin for steering underwater. Their whiskers have taken the appearance of gills. While useless for breathing underwater, they mimic salamanders in an attempt to confuse and scare off predators. Rivulet is an adventurer who left their clan to explore distant lands and keeps finding themself in trouble.
Saint
Incredibly fluffy to adapt to the cold but pretty skinny and frail underneath. Their tongue is rough like a cats (so are all slugcats but Saint stands out). As their karma grows, echo scales begin to appear along their body and they subtly glow and distort the close surrounding environment. Saint is just really uncanny to be around.
( hey if you read through all of these thank you its means a lot that someone would read my funky rambles :) )

I would like to offer this resource for therians, an extensive list of all of Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentaries that are available on soap2day, and a full list of what species* they each (notably, prominently) feature the natural behaviors of, separated by episode, and omitting species that were only shown dead, juvenile or being predated on. This took me a while (I have been working on it since Prehistoric Planet’s release) because I did in fact have to watch every single series in full in order to list all the species and the episodes are around 50 minutes long, but enjoy.
Long post ahead:
Most of these shows have closed captioning, which is why I’ve picked soap2day. Planet Earth is the only one that doesn’t. I did not include Dynasties and Dynasties II because each episode only features one species.
Thank you to Birch (@ambiguousmutt) for his help (he watched about half of the episodes) so I didn’t have to do it individually. Credit goes to him as well.
*Sometimes Attenborough doesn’t say the specific species and I was too busy trying to get through the episodes to identify it. In those cases I just put the most specific name I could.

Pen-Thief Update
warnings: none
Tag: @egrets-not-regrets
warnings: none
summary: I complain about Pen-Thief Alpharius
So, I've worked with the patient who lives with Alpharius the pen thief. In that time I've noticed several things about the large teal gremlin:
For one thing, he can shapeshift. The second time I visited this particular patient, there appeared to be a Salamander Apothecary tending to them, who told me that he would be taking care of them for the day, and for me to leave... And as there are occasions when my schedule and another provider's overlaps and I wasn't informed beforehand due to a breakdown in communication, I left the house to call the agency I work for in my car.
When I found out that this particular patient didn't have any Apothecary visits scheduled - either at a clinic, in the hospital or at their home for the month, I tell you that I was very worried and nearly called emergency services to report an astartes having broke into a chronically ill and vulnerable person's home for who knew what reason...
And Pen-Thief Alpharius turned back into his usual form, having apparently decided that I had been tricked into leaving. Panic over, I went back into the home and ignored his sullen pouting and occasional transformation into different Apothecaries and their orders to go away.
I did tell my agency about the fact that Pen-Thief can and will shapeshift in order to try and trick us, so that the rest of this particular patient's care team will have forewarning about that specific behavior of his.
A second thing that I've noticed is that he resource-hoards. Canned goods, sealed bottles of medications, bandages, gloves, masks, anything that he can get his grubby teal hands on, he will steal and refuse to give back unless his bonded human talks him into it...
One of his favorite supplies to steal is pens. He's figured out that I - and other caregivers - need to be able to fill out the paperwork in regards to the patient within a certain time-frame and... I guess he's decided that stealing the pens will drive us away? Or is a passive-aggressive way of showing that he could take anything he wanted from us? It's very annoying.
Jokes' on him, though. We will be switching to a paperless system by the end of the month and neither the charging cords, nor the laptops that they're issuing us are staying at the patients' homes, so nyeh. Take that, you teal bastard.
In the meantime, I've taken to stashing extra pens in my car - which he hasn't broken into (as far as I know - and I have deliberately left out things I know he likes to take in semi-plain sight as bait) and also in my bra.
I excuse myself to the bathroom to take out the pen, then return and fill out the forms as he sulks in a corner or looms over my shoulder.
The temptation to buy a spray bottle and filling it with vinegar to spritz this mischievous hydra when he tries to cause trouble... But would it help? Or will he escalate things further? Heeeeelp!

man placed before me a tall opulent church
god placed before me- under a cloud of undulating blue feathers- a hawk with a pigeon in its claws.
When I was a kid i jumped out the window on christmas eve and walked a few blocks down to his parked car. I got in and he drove me to the prettiest church in downtown. there was a midnight service which radiated out large windows melodys and boring candlelight striking me with perverse power. I had power over the church and power over a man’s desire and power over my weakening virtue and mounding fear. He could kill me in seconds, i held that truth like a lonely cock- tear stained and begging. If i was dead, his desire would still be stuck in me, I would still own it. I felt and knew this bonedeep with childlike obedience, the way one is obedient to truths like gravity.
We walked into that church and sat on a pew in the back. The room stretched all the way to golden daylight packed with the smell and bodies of sagging pious life. I felt his erection in the dense air and put my feather-like, child hand on his thigh just before the tip of his crime, with motherly acceptance. That is when I sealed his death, and my murderous intent.
I carried the books he handed off, my bones thin and long enduring and craving for the glory of strain. He placed another novel on my head and told me to stand up straight. He placed a novel on my head and told me to look forward to death. He placed a novel on my head and motioned for my servitude. He placed a novel on my crotch and said shove it in you and marvel at the blood.
I learnt the power of a hairless cunt and boneless legs. We wandered in the tunnels of an abandoned university, he pushed my dissolving frame against the pinch of a wall and put his salamander fingers inside the nervous leak of a mouth. If I uttered a sound it would stutter but I was like a mountainside rock against a molten arrow- silent and melting- not before becoming red as chemically possible.
He motioned to a thin metal locker, sky blue and lockless, I crawled inside and he jammed it shut. Light spread from the small slits. My bones began bruising and I started to choke on my own CO2. It was night sky black when I slammed my hand against the rattling frames, when I begged him to let me out, when I began seeing the fallacy of my power, when I knew instead that I wanted to live.

Imagine a Reader who makes... plushies!
They hand-make them, have original patterns, and have a variety of fabrics and materials, ranging from puff balls to felt to velvetine to fluffy to smooth, whatever you can imagine! They even have some faux furs and faux feathers for the hyper-realistic models, in various natural shades. Any color or shade or hue, they have it in stock and ready to cut. Threads, they have over twenty colors. When it comes to eyes, do they have them! Buttons, realistic eyes with irises, little black rounds, iron-on and sew-on patches too!
When it comes to designs and creations, Reader is never out of ideas. They have several styles of bears, cats, dogs, wolves, bunnies, deer, sheep, llamas... Other creatures such as snakes, lizards, geckos, chameleons, and turtles... Frogs and salamanders and newts and tadpoles and axolotls... All sorts of fish and sea life, sharks and rays and salmon and starfish and octopi and jellyfish, plus qhales and orcas and seals, too... Even dinosaurs and dragons and unicorns and chimeras... And a special project, little plush versions of the X-Men and Brotherhood...
And Reader's powers even center on their hobby, their art! The ability to bring their creations to life and puppeteer them, even other people and creatures. With only a flick of their hand, their life/will fills them, and so does complete and utter loyalty. Reader could be a hero or a villain, but enjoys making whomever they consider a friend a little companion or pet, something to keep them company so they don't feel alone...
(Fun facts:
• Reader likes to wear sweaters
• Reader sleeps in a pile of plushies
• Reader can have little strings appear when they've brought something to life and/or controlling something/someone
• They can use sewing needles as weapons
• They have a bubbly, happy personality, but they had a dark/traumatizing childhood
• Some of their favorite foods are maple sausage, fried eggs, and sweet tea and lemonade
• They give their friends hugs, lots of them
(They are also gender-neutral, or the gender of the Reader, okay? Like all of my other posts)

buckle up folks, its a long one
the Hatake turn into an animal during puberty, any animal and any Hatake-by-blood. after 24 hours, they turn human again and can then form contracts with bonded animals of their type.
adoption by blood is the Hatake's most coveted jutsu, though entirely unknown by other clans. the adopted lack the Hatake white chakra, but their children will have it!
Kakashi turns into a samoyed dog and this sparks great joy for Team Minato. this is why he has a bunch of dogs.
Sakumo is an arctic gray wolf and could bond with Fire Country's wolf packs.
Orochimaru is a blue coral snake. he adopted Anko, who is a boomslang snake, as well as his other kids; Kimimaro is a pangolin, Suigetsu is a leopard seal, Jugo is a tiger, and Karin is a giant river otter
Touka is a grizzly bear. she has several sun bear friends just to freak out the Senju elders.
Tobirama is a clouded leopard, and specifically took on missions to new places to look for leopards of different kinds, along with Touka for cousin-sibling bonding time!
if Kakashi starts using the blood adoption jutsu on his friends/students, well... that's clan business.
Sasuke turns into a nightjar! Itachi is a crow (obvs), and Shisui is a raven.
now, Kakashi didn't adopt Shisui. Shisui is Kagami's grandson, and Kagami was adopted by Tobirama, meaning Shisui has the Hatake white chakra! Kagami is a magpie.
Naruto becomes a maned wolf, which... well. Kakashi helps him find as many bush dogs and falkland wolves as possible, but they're rather rare critters.
Sakura becomes a lynx. she enjoys scaring the shit out of people with her calls.
Genma becomes a Komodo dragon, Hayate is a raccoon, Yugao a stoat
Sai is a burrowing owl, Iruka is an hourglass dolphin, Izumo is a sea eagle, and Kotetsu is a leopard shark.
Ino becomes a secretary bird, Shikamaru turns into an elk, and Choji is a giant salamander
Asuma is a gecko, Kurenai is a mocking bird, Tsunade is a bison, and Tenten is a porcupine!
Kiba is a borzoi and Hana is a newfoundlander
Hinata is a flemish giant rabbit and Neji is a badger

I want to shed some light (heh) on the use of streetlight imagery in Rebellion, because it's another recurring visual theme (albeit more subtle than some of the others), starting with Homura's transformation sequence:
Tumblr media
It's difficult to convey in a still, and I have no idea if it is intentional, but the angle and the framing always gives me war flashbacks to that one iconic sequence in Revolutionary Girl Utena:
Tumblr media
(if you know, you know)
Although the background in the first photo is too blurry to make out, it looks like the lights of Mitakihara City in the background, as if we are viewing this from the park where Madoka and Homura have their heart-to-hearts. However, the lamp designs here are different, specifically lacking the old-fashioned wrought-iron filigree:
Tumblr media
(oh my god, I just noticed the labyrinth in the middle right, this whole garden is just one elaborate metaphor, isn't it, AAAAAAAAAAAA)
Here's a closer look at them--interestingly, they don't seem to have changed much as a result of Homura's takeover.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We get a better look at the other lamps later on, illuminating a staircase as Homura monologues about witches. The symbolism here is obvious: Homura is descending into her psyche and these lamps are guiding the way.
Tumblr media
Gosh, that wrought-iron filigree sure looks like a stylized salamander, doesn't it?
The old-fashioned look is well in keeping with Homulilly's general Victorian aesthetic, as well as Homura's apartment building from the TV series, which has an old-world European look to it in contrast to the shiny modernism of the rest of the city's architecture.
Tumblr media
However, when Homura emerges back onto the city streets, the filigree has disappeared. This implies to me that it represents a part of her nature she is not yet consciously aware of, consistent with the other subtle uses of salamander imagery in the first half of the film.
Tumblr media
Here, the lights are old-fashioned, but not to the same extent. They fit right in with the dream-like blending of inside and outside in this scene (which Homura does not even appear to notice).
We see the wrought-iron lamps again in the other descent into Homura's psyche in what I call the "Tunnel of Love" sequence. Not only do we get the lamps again, we also get the windows representing salvation/connection to the Law of Cycles/Madoka, scissors, and keys in sealed glass jars.
Tumblr media
(As an aside, the blob in the middle sure looks a lot like the famous rabbit-duck illusion, which is an optical illusion famously used as an example of different modes of seeing --"seeing that" vs "seeing as"-- by the German philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein, which is well in keeping with Rebellion's use of psychological imagery and German philosophy.)
As the original series takes pains to remind us, Homura's name is a homonym for "flame", so it makes sense to me that she would unconsciously gravitate towards flame imagery. These old-fashioned lamps are a more benign, focused version of the apocalyptic conflagration that destroys the city later on.
Tumblr media
Note how the streetlights now resemble sewing pins--the primary weapon of the Clara Dolls.
Streetlight imagery also appears in the original TV series, although the focus is less on the lamps themselves and more on all the insects attracted to it (an obvious metaphor for magical girls):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's fascinating how the same object can represent completely different things depending on context even within the same series.

It’s good that in the Salamander, civilian and Night Lord (knight, princess and dragon) dynamic the Salamander wins and saves their beloved little mortal in the end. All the hugs and kisses for your big brave space marine who loves you so so much and did everything in his power to save you!!
Because, could you imagine if the worst really did happen? If your Salamander loved you, but not enough to save you? Or maybe the horrible nature of the galaxy you live in behaved as it always does, and nobody genuinely cared enough for you to even question your disappearance? I mean, wouldn’t it just be terrible if a strong and scary astartes stole you away? (twirling my hair) If nobody even protested it because what are you in the end, but one mortal?
Wouldn’t it just be terrifying to wake up late at night and see the tapetum lucidum of his eyes shining brightly at the foot of your bed? That glow which once brought comfort to you with the knowledge that one of the Salamanders, your protectors (they were supposed to be your protectors) were nearby, now having been turned on its head. (giddily kicking my feet)
It’d probably be so frightening, you know. With him being so in love with you. He’s probably never felt these kinds of feelings before, and he couldn’t possibly let that chance pass him by. The cloaks he gifts you would be so comfortable if you didn’t know who they were made from. Not dissimilar to his affection towards you, since there’s always a hint of something inhumanly monstrous lurking in the darkness of his eyes. (Scribbling bright pink love hearts around a photo of a night lord). It’s like he’s teetering at the edge of some abyss, and you’re not even sure what for. Because if he wanted to maim you he would’ve done it weeks ago, and if he wanted to kill you then he would’ve done it the first time you met. And yet that hunger in his eyes only gets stronger and stronger the more time he spends around you. And you’re afraid of what will happen when he looks into that abyss, and finally chooses to fall.
… but that’s all in the past now! Your Salamander spouse would never let any harm happen to you, especially not from another space marine. So you shouldn’t worry yourself over things that will never ever happen. ;)
Putting this ask on the fridge because you got an A fucking + in understanding the dynamic. Like I am vibrating anon you and I are on the same brain wave. I dearly hope I add some things to your musings that you enjoy. tw dubcon and manipulation probably?
This all really plays into this idea that's common in some media; You didn't think you were worth anything, no one listened no one cared not even the Salamander you were close with did, but yet that Night Lord put enough effort into stealing you away. Showing interest in you, keeping you alive, fighting other Night Lords that try and break into his private quarters to get at the little human he guards like a hound with it's kill. Sometimes he returns to you with blood on his armored fingers, splattered across his cheeks. Is it possible to feel safe, but horrifically unsafe around the same man?
Your Salamanders never made you feel this way, but they're not here, only your Night Lord that makes your heart race when he's just barely visible in the shadows of the room with emotions that conflict each other.
He's obsessive, he adores you; But is it the kind of adoration you want? Is it a passing phase, or are you two intertwined forever? Do you want to be intertwined however, when his eyes are like pitch black voids that seem to pull you in deeper each time you struggle?
...Should you struggle?
Because the way he looks at you is like you have something he wants, but you don't know what it is. Do you want to know? Is it yet another level to the emotions and actions he's now getting to experience, or is it that hunger that you see when his eyes land on you? The same hunger that you see when he's sealed in his armor and staring down at another Night Lord that's sniffing around you- like he's about to tear him apart and enjoy doing it.
You'll never have all the answers with him. There will always be things that swirl around in his head you'll never know, and there will always be this tingling on the back of your neck that tells you to run.
Thankfully it's all just a horrible nightmare, and your lovely Salamander comforts you and reassures you that would never happen. :3
