Day #224: Today I Listened to ‘Ruby’ by Sam Sweeney. Ok, got some post-folk today (unless I’m misusing that term, which I probably am).

I really like the ‘1 2 _ 4’ rhythmic groove. It negates the need for a snare drum when every 3rd beat is punctuated by a deadened guitar strum. The add2 chords are nice and there are some great post-rock buildups, not to mention the lovely guitar atmospherics.

If there’s a weak link, it’s Sweeney’s (I assume) violin playing. I’m absolutely not saying I could do better, not even on one of the instruments I play, but when the track rests on the quality of your soloing, you really need to switch up the note values a bit. Almost every note is a quaver, played at pretty much the same level as the one that came before it. It sounds like he loaded some string samples into a computer and had an arpeggiator cycle through them at random.
