Words You Wouldn't Think Were Etymologically Linked: Part 27
Cleave and glyph both come from the PIE root *glewbʰ-, meaning to cut or slice.
Cleave comes from the Old English clēofan, meaning to split or separate, from the Proto-Germanic kleubaną. Kleubaną was derived from the PIE *glewbʰ-.
Glyph comes from the French glyphe, from the Ancient Greek gluphḗ, meaning carving. Gluphḗ originated from the Proto-Hellenic *glúpʰō, from the PIE *glewbʰ-.

How many Spanish root words are there in Tagálog?
According to Rodolfo Barón’s “Hispanismos en el Tagalo” published in 1972, out of 30,000 Tagálog rootwords, 10,000 are of Spanish origin. That’s ⅓, with ⅔ being shared by other languages (Malayo-Polynesian, Chinese, etc.). Clearly, without Spanish, Tagálog is CRIPPLED. Tapos sasabihin ng ibá, “Spanish lang iyán, ‘di na iyán importante sa atin”. Take note that these are just root words that I am…

Daily Etymology #124
Hormone
Hormone comes from the Ancient Greek hormḗ, meaning onset or rapid motion forwards. Hormḗ is of unclear etymology, although it may come from the PIE root *ser-, meaning flow or stream, or it may come from the Ancient Greek órnumi, meaning to urge on or incite.

hiii hi hello. heres my favorite latin words nd their derivative
- like the latin word facēre which is where we get words like facilitate and facility.
- gravissimus is also good bc its where we get grave
- covda, where we get coward
- iugula originally meant "kill him!" but we get the word jugular from it.
- sperarē is also good, its where we get the suffixes for despair and prosper
- pupa actually meant doll before it meant baby bug
- conieci is both fun to say and where we get conjecture
- limen , meaning threshold, is where we get liminal
- despondeo, meaning to betroth, is where we get despondent
- magis means more! which is where we get magistrate
facila- [easy]
pupa- is a cute prefix :) very green
conjecture [con-ject-ure = together-throw-noun]
magn- [great]

Shallan, Dalinar, Kaladin, Jasnah, Szeth
Pattern, Moash, Adolin, Syl, Rock, Gaz
Hoid, Lopen, Eshonai, Navani, Zahel
Sadeas, Lift, Veil, Teft, Rlain
Ben McSweeney: Pretty excellent, I like a lot of these!
The artist is from the Phillipines, and they do superb animation work as well. I think they're tied up in videogames, working on JRPGs.
