〈 ᴏᴅᴇ ᴛᴏ ꜰʀɪᴇɴᴅ ᴠᴏʟᴜᴍᴇ ᴏɴᴇ 〉— Sakamaki Richter

Important Notes:

Yes I am aware that I wrote this instead of answering the scenario asks already in my ask box. However, I hope you all enjoyed this regardless^^ I’m mostly testing out how I want to organise these short stories, with this little set; so feel free to give feedback. And tell me if anything doesn’t make sense. :)

Now on a more specific note: I had fun doing this. I’m always looking for excuses to explore Richter and Karl’s characters, so little stories like these are giving me the opportunity to do that. I hope you enjoy!^^

Soft locks of green swished and swayed in the outside wind, individual strands flowing like vines, ready to strangle whatever they touch. The individual connected to such flowing locks stood tranquil, hands dove deep into spacious pockets. His gaze was peaceful, and his stood in the heart of growing winds— It would storm tonight, he supposed. One of the most violent the Makai had seen in some time.

The silhouette stood strong, though was as graceful as it could be. As if were ready to blow away in such a harsh breeze, at any given moment. How far would he fly, he wondered. He wondered if he would be swept away, long passed the borders of life, death, and whatever lies in between. The man wondered how far the wind would take him, if he were to just fall into it’s arms.

Tired eyes scanned the valley he had wandered to. His days of wandering the Earth, hoping that his memories would long fade, have returned. The days of wishing that time would consume the darkest depths of his mind, have come to say hello again. If only life could be reset. A fresh start, from the dawn of time. Wipe his slate clean, and start anew. What choices would he make, if he would even do anything differently at all.

❝ What would you do in this situation, I wonder…❞

It was like his vocal cords were failing to register the vibrations, struggling to push out the man’s voice. It came out scratchy, and rough, like a broken record. The sandy dunes of the unknown wasteland he had stumbled upon were being swept away in the wind; sandy particles and bits of debris stabbing at his skin, leaving him with numbing pains. Though not running, he instead embraced. Back hitting the soft terrain, a dull thud sounding in its place. He traced the patterns the wind was choosing to show him, as if he were watching some child’s puppet show. Sand blowing this way and that, almost like magic young ones would see in children shows. He almost couldn’t believe it, how fantastical the world could be, in its most natural state.

However for every fantastical element Mother Nature decides to bestow, thus comes something wicked to keep the balance. Whether you were in the Makai, or on Earth, any sentient being could tell: The world reeks of death. Natural disasters, and even the smallest of substances, ready to take a life at every corner. Any person who realises this fact knows to heed its warnings, succumb to Mother Nature’s mercy.

❝ But you didn’t… You would defy the universe itself, if you had to…❞

The forest of green atop the mans head spiralled out like tree roots. Like the very veins that run through the world around him. How childish of him… A grown man, having run away from home for the evening. A grown man sprawled out in sandy dunes, in god knows who’s territory. He was like a small boy, all over again. Though right now, not a single thought crossed his mind. All except for one.. That person. The person he had lost so long ago, yet the same one who was defying time itself. No matter how long he waited, how long he suffered… He wouldn’t leave his mind. The individual wished to give up his bodily autonomy. Give up the right to think, the right to feel. Let numbness set in, as time and time again death fails to embrace him into its arms. He was so tired… And simply wished to dry up. Dissolve, in the sand he now called his bed for the evening. But as always, only one thought remained. The culmination of everything he’s ever wanted to say, yet the words he never knew he had the courage to speak.

Was he hallucinating? Was sand building up in his eyes, or has the dry substance absorbed all the blood from his head? For before his eyes, he noticed a figure, being formed in sand. An all too familiar figure, as if it were being probed directly from his subconscious. How convenient. Almost as if he were blissed out of his mind, the man’s head cocked. His eyes were softened— Colours desaturated as the life threatened to drain from him. Despite everything. Despite the numbness, the exhaustion, the need for release… The corners of his mouth curled. If he was going to speak, now should be the time. Then maybe, hopefully, he could let go. He could let himself rest, and his eyes would close just one last time…

❥ BACKGROUND + PERSONALITY:

Juliet Hugo serves as a Royal Guard for the Barveullian royal family, the Archambaults. He is tasked with patrolling the outskirts of the royal capitol, Leon-Lurje, and also serves to escort important figures in and out of the city. His rank is fairly low, but he is an excellently hard worker.

Even while being known for his excellence in his duty, Juliet is extremely weak to a pretty face~ He is characterized as having “A Heart Pierced by Eros” as he seems to fall head over heels for nearly anyone who provides him the light of day. He is kind, passionate, a bit clumsy at times, and can certainly be a bit overwhelming when around someone fun and exciting, but this young man has a heart of gold (pierced or not) and will provide companionship like no other.

However, the story behind Juliet’s floaty personality and charming romanticism is not so lighthearted. A mysterious vibora of the shadows, with a powerful venom akin to that of the tip of Eros’s arrow, has Juliet stuck in an infinite loop of helplessly falling in love with whoever his captor pleases; Valentine, a childhood friend and now ruthless master, can be credited for Juliet’s invisible suffering. When around his darling, Juliet cannot feel anything except for love and desire. He cannot feel sad, angry, and he can only barely reach a faint definition of happiness. Don’t let his joyful face fool you, or else you may be fooled like poor poor Juliet.

Unless I just suck at reading—It seems that Ruki takes the same amount of time to rest as humans do?? I believe he mentioned not actually sleeping most of the time (instead just watching Yui sleep, which i found cute but also kinda funny 🏃🏃) but y’know.

But do you think he goes for prolonged periods of time without a rest/sleep period? <:O. Or was it maybe just a trait that carried over? Since at one point he did need to get consistent rest.

WHILE I HAVE YOU HERE— Do you think any other human quirks/traits/activities carried over into his Vampire days?? Yes, you'd be right! It's heavily implied the Mukami brothers need a regular night of sleep like humans would. And it seems they also sleep at odd hours compared to purebloods and vampires in general, most likely due to their human past.

Sorry, my answer might get a be spoilerific in some parts.

It's confirmed they sleep at different hours from the Sakamaki family. Just take a look at Ruki's More, Blood Brute ending. He only manages to kill all six brothers thanks to them sleeping in the morning/daylight hours, suggesting it's very likely that these are normal waking hours for Ruki and exploiting the differences in sleeping hours doesn't seem to be too big of a deal for him at all.

There are parts in More, Blood where he scolds Kou for not sleeping early, because then he would have a hard time waking up early (I assume on time for his idol duties) as well. This implies they would follow something similar to a human's circadian rhythm, however, there are also parts of his routes where Ruki isn't sleeping around the same time as his brothers, which could suggest his sleep schedule is a bit wonky at times. It's shown periodically that Ruki even forsakes his sleep altogether, mostly because he is troubled from some event in the game. In Dark Fate, he skips a few nights of sleep after Yui turns herself in to the Founders, and in Lost Eden he stays awake for days after Karlheinz's death and after learning some vital information about the truth behind his past. So yes, I think he can get away with a few restless nights and still function normally compared to humans who easily get fatigued even if they have insomniac tendencies. I assume even for half-bloods, it's nothing too detrimental to their health, but rather an issue of comfort and solace as seen in his Sleeping Vampire story from Vandead Carnival, wherein he scolds Yui for not allowing him to get his sleep, so it gets a bit confusing at times.

As for the other human traits you listed, yes, those definitely tend to be exclusive to the Mukami family. Ruki in particular. We all know he cooks the homemade meals to care for his brothers and all that because let's be real, from what I know, the other three seem to a be a bit hopeless when it comes to preparing their own meals. There are other human traditions that he tends to adhere to as well, as seen in the Bloody Bouquet drama CD/short story. It's seen in the CG for Dark Fate as well. At least to me, it seems he has fairly human values on what a wedding should look like, which makes sense given his past. Overall, however, he still opts to emphasize the difference between himself and humans, often saying that he is too vampiric to make his human s/o happy or to understand their supposed futile sentimentality behind events or qualities he wouldn't even bat an eye at or deem worthy of his concern, as seen in the infamous cat scene.

EDIT: Another difference I remembered is how some of the Sakamakis sleep in coffins, although there is also a scene in Vandead Carnival where Ruki and Subaru are talking and he just goes like “hm, I’m surprised I haven’t tried that myself, perhaps I should” so I think the whole bed vs coffin spiel is just preference more than anything.

Ahhh, my thoughts for this were really disorganized but I hope it makes sense. ALSO PLEASE FEEL FREE TO ASK ME MORE QUESTIONS LIKE THIS, I REALLY ENJOY ANSWERING THEM. 😩🧩

Honestly Sumire has changed slightly by the more stuff I watch and her story will slightly change as I get inspired by stuff that was done and than mush a bunch of stuff into one person and or thing, But imma give u one of my many inspos

Violet Evergarden was like oh.my.god, when came to Sumire's personality and such and her design (when it came to clothes she was a massive help in the department). But Sumire and Violet are similar in too many damn ways. I was watching this anime and was tryna draw Sumire's new and improved design and as I was watching this I was like "oop-" and then BOOM inspiration hit me like a mf brick.

Sumire and Violet both have the whole "give me orders and I'l obey". That was the whole thing I was going for when it to Sumire's final design, she's been through too many and so many designs it ain't even funny anymore, in her first design she had short purple hair and was mute, then she fell into the design of Isabelle including backstory (but that changed-).

A lot of Sumire’s inspiration came from her, in the making of Sumire’s dress and her way of responding. Violet evergarden even though I made me shit tears u is what made make the final Sumire 🙏🏽

Breaking SJM news: a completely new series is (likely) on the way !!

Last night, I came across a veryyyy interesting YouTube video posted by Bloomsbury 4 weeks ago. Although the video was mostly super boring (talking numbers and finances), towards the end, we get this little nugget of information...

[Bloomsbury staff member]: "Regarding the timeline and future Sarah J Maas book releases, which are obviously very important to us... so her next title, which is the third in her Crescent City series, comes out on the 30th of January, 2024. So, that will fall into this financial year."

[Bloomsbury staff member]: "And thereafter, we have SIX further contracted titles -- so continuing this series, and STARTING A NEW SERIES AS WELL."

A new series! This likely goes hand-in-hand with the announcement made by Bloomsbury a couple of months prior, in which they stated that 4 additional SJM books were on the way (but curiously, no further details about these books were given...)

Although we don't know for sure, this is my guess as to what these 6 future SJM books are:

2 x ACOTAR books.

Then the 4 remaining, newly contracted books; the first being the final Crescent City book, House of Many Waters.

Leaving 3 x books for the new series (which makes perfect sense, as when starting a new series, SJM is always contracted for 3 books initially).

The question remains as to what exactly this new series may be. Which leads me to... Twilight of the Gods.

[SJM universe spoilers ahead!]

Back in 2015, SJM started a Pinterest board for 2 new book series that were connected in some way; one was Crescent City, and the other was called Twilight of the Gods.

On her Twitter, SJM also mentioned that she had been working on both for quite a while, and that it was soon time to release them into the world.

Around the same time, a series called 'Twilight of the Gods' was mysteriously added to SJM's official Goodreads catalogue.

'Twilight of the Gods' is another term for Ragnarok; a famed tale of Norse mythology where the Gods and giants/demons across all worlds joined together to fight a giant battle that signified the end of the world.

Thus, I believe that 'Twilight of the Gods' is SJM's next series; it will be a Ragnarok retelling, and all of the characters from TOG, ACOTAR and CC will join together for a cataclysmic battle against the Asteri, the Daglan, and the Valg (because lets not forget that Orcus and Mantyx are still unaccounted for...).

With this in mind, consider the numerous references to Norse mythology that SJM has already scattered throughout her books:

Feyre as Freya: Freya was perhaps one of the most renowned Norse goddesses, and was Queen.

Nesta, Emerie and Gwyn as the Valkyries: An obvious one, but the Valkyries originated from, and had a huge part to play in Norse Mythology (Ragnarok especially).

Lucien as Loki: According to Norse mythology, Loki is often depicted with long, red hair. He is also seen as a God of fire, and is commonly associated with foxes.

Danika (Fendyr) and Fenrys as Fenrir: Fenrir was a renowned monstrous wolf of Norse mythology. Fenrir being 'unleashed' is one of the key events of Ragnarok.

Hunt as Thor ('Thurr'): During Ragnarok, Thor has a famous battle against the 'Midgard Serpent.' Consider the snake that Hunt is holding on the cover of HOSAB.

Midgard: is the 'Earth' world in Norse mythology.

Hel (spelt the same way): Is the 'underworld' of Norse mythology.

Further, if you looked at SJM's "Twilight of the Gods" Pinterest board - before it was deleted - you'd see countless images of (Lady?) Thor, the Valkyries, Sailor Moon, and even the coffin that Maeve locked Aelin in... (that can't be a coincidence, right..?!) Some examples below:

'Twilight' is also another word for 'Dusk'; considering the lost Dusk Court, and 'Dusk's Truth' (both of which are the centre of the upcoming crossover and broader multiversal narrative...) it matches up perfectly.

Thus, I believe that the remaining ACOTAR and CC books will continue to add to the multiverse, bit by bit. And whilst they can still be read in a standalone fashion, my guess is that they will build up to a grand finale (perhaps the very last ACOTAR book will end with Aelin walking through a portal...?) and then Twilight of the Gods will begin.

If you thought Kingdom of Ash was epic... then Twilight of the Gods -- if correct -- is bound to blow us away (and, it might even put SJM's name in the history books).

Hello everyone! Do you like giant robots? Norse mythology? What about broken lesbians helping each other heal (and ones making each other worse)? Have you wished that the Witch From Mercury was a little more Armored Core? Well, I have the book for you!

My wife has finished her first novel, Season of Fools! A scifi mecha lesbian retelling of Ragnarok. I had the pleasure of editing for it and helping to brainstorm, but the writing is Morrigan's through and through. It's moving, with touching romance, brutal mecha action, manipulative villains, and an interesting and unique hard scifi world set in the far off-world future featuring space travel, giant robots, AI becoming sentient and finding their humanity (and humans losing their own). It's one of my favorite books this year so far, and I couldn't recommend it more!

Hi Puff! Idk if anyone has asked you this yet but what are your thoughts on the god of war game series? Are they actually more "accurate" about the greek mythology then LO? xD

oh lord, I'm def not a good person to ask about this question because I haven't played through all the original God of War games (though it makes me laugh to think about them because watching my oldest brother play the first game when I was like 7 years old was the first time I'd ever seen video game boobies LOL) but considering it's just a hack and slash game in which you brutally murder the gods... ima give it a big noooo on that one LOL it's about as accurate as LO in that it's more about spectacle and drama than it is about actually being accurate to the myths they're based on lmaoo

As for the Norse series of games, I actually HAVE played both God of War 2018 and Ragnarok and loved them both, though I'm not as well versed in Norse mythology so I also can't say if what they take from Norse myth is accurate. Obviously I know that Atreus/Loki has zero relation to fictional character Kratos from Greece and I have basic understanding of general concepts like Yggdrasil and the nine realms among other things like that, but the finer details regarding the stories of the characters themselves I'm not as brushed up on. Hella great storytelling though and I appreciate the lengths they went to to make it feel like a Norse-myth-inspired environment, even down to the vocabulary and terms used.

Just like with LO, you shouldn't be taking any of what God of War does or says at face value. If you like the games (or LO), use it as an opening hook to get more into the actual myths if they interest you. But definitely don't use them as any sort of credible source LOL

Now that I'm typing out my thoughts on this though, I think the biggest difference between GoW and LO (one that makes GoW far superior to it) is that the creators of GoW never once led their audience to believe that they were more than what they were, a hack and slash video game inspired by specific myths. What you see is what you get with GoW, but LO - and Rachel - constantly feel like they're actually trying to be taken seriously and that's what makes it all the worse when their storytelling is godawful and the amount of actual "myth" they have in the comic amounts to as much as a Family Guy cutaway gag. Just completely directionless and uninspired to the point you wonder why it's even an Greek myth retelling to begin with. At least GoW fully immerses itself in the myths their games are based on and has a shitload of fun with it, with LO it'll just source some copy pasted Princeton document or lazily tell some mythological metaphor that has nothing to do with the overarching plot so that it can remind you "hey this is a Greek myth retelling!" before getting back to its bland Keeping Up with the Kardashians romance. The mythological "inspiration" in LO feels more like tired lip service at this point rather than actual inspiration, which is really bitterly ironic considering Rachel used to tote around calling herself a "folklorist" and claiming that everyone else's knowledge of Greek myth compared to hers was "basic af".

TL ; DR: The biggest difference between GoW and LO in their retellings is humility IMO.
