In India, children under 16 returning to school this month at the start of the school year will no longer be taught about evolution, the periodic table of elements or sources of energy.
The news that evolution would be cut from the curriculum for students aged 15–16 was widely reported last month, when thousands of people signed a petition in protest. But official guidance has revealed that a chapter on the periodic table will be cut, too, along with other foundational topics such as sources of energy and environmental sustainability. Younger learners will no longer be taught certain pollution- and climate-related topics, and there are cuts to biology, chemistry, geography, mathematics and physics subjects for older school students.
Overall, the changes affect some 134 million 11–18-year-olds in India’s schools. The extent of what has changed became clearer last month when the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) — the public body that develops the Indian school curriculum and textbooks — released textbooks for the new academic year that started in May.

Aditya Mukherjee, a historian at Jawaharlal Nehru University in New Dehli, says that changes to the curriculum are being driven by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a mass-membership volunteer organization that has close ties to India’s governing Bharatiya Janata Party. The RSS feels that Hinduism is under threat from India’s other religions and cultures.
“There is a movement away from rational thinking, against the enlightenment and Western ideas” in India, adds Sucheta Mahajan, a historian at Jawaharlal Nehru University who collaborates with Mukherjee on studies of RSS influence on school texts. Evolution conflicts with creation stories, adds Mukherjee. History is the main target, but “science is one of the victims”, she adds.

Sammy stared down at the man who had invaded their peaceful realm.
He was soaken with ink, laden with the liquor of the Lord, and his expression, though it was hard for a moment as he turned to face the prophet, was now soft, lined with benevolent concern.
Sammy’s hand tightened on the pipe.
Who was this? His immediate thought was this was a false god, some imposter who had thought that he could take the place of his Lord. His arm rose to bring the pipe down again, but something- something stopped him.
A realization.
This could be a gift. What was that angel always yammering about? That she was an angel, sent onto them from above? No, she was not. Sammy had seen her rise from the inky puddles, she was a blasphemous fraud. Oh- oh, the realization. The revelation.
This… this was the man that Sammy had been prophesying of all along. He was wrong, in his interpretation of the Lord’s word. His Lord never meant that He would redeem him himself, and while the notion stung, this man was proof that they were not abandoned.
He would set them free- he was sent from above. Sammy had seen the rays of sunshine above him, burning his dark and holy skin with its purifying rays.
Sammy knelt down to this angel, prodding with the pipe carefully. His teeth, wet and soft, gnashed against one another as he tried to comprehend the human form before him.
It was… perfect.
Sammy inhaled once, allowing himself to relax and smile.
But maybe-
The thought struck
Maybe too perfect.
Sammy flinched back, as though burned. But of course! This was nothing but a ruse, a lie, a deception! This man could not be the savior from the Lord; it was not what Sammy was promised. Or was he?
Sammy’s head spun. He could hardly decide what he believed anymore. Was his faith so shaky?
Resolving himself, he dragged the man- angel- falsehood- into the center of the pentagram. He took the axe, ran his slick fingers along the edge of the metal. Sharp. Clean. Beautiful.
He set it aside. It was not his tool.
Quietly, he heard the Voice of the Lord echo through the pipes, whispering; Not yet.
A rush of electricity ran through Sammy’s body, his fingers trembling with delight, his lungs aching to sing with praise for his Lord. At last, a message! A message, for him, after silence for so long! And one that proved to him that he would be an instrument in the coming of the end, in the coming of their Freedom. The axe was not his, not yet. It would be his. He would be at the side of this angel, and together they would forge the new world.
His heart light, Sammy assured himself that he would watch this sheep carefully, and he would be his shepard, to guide him unto the path of their Lord.
He would set them free.
Amen.

The poor were just pawns for Mother Teresa's fundamentalist religious fanaticism. She overtly states that doing good for the sake of doing good (altruism, humanism) is absolutely not their objective - there's a "danger" that they may fall into such a trap. The entire point of her mission was to ingratiate themselves to their god.

If I started earnestly talking to and about an invisible being with all-knowing, all-seeing power that I developed countless intricate rituals, books, music, and art for, I’d be diagnosed with schizophrenia and paranoia. But of you’re doing these things in the name of “God,” then you are simply just a Christian. This is why I can’t take people who believe in god seriously. What is the line between religion and mental illness? No one (e.g. my religious family members and mental health professionals) can seem to answer this question when I pose it to them.

AL-MUGHAYYIR, West Bank — The attack by Israeli settlers on this Palestinian village was the worst anyone here could remember. There were pools of dried blood on the rooftop where assailants shot a man dead; a pile of lambs with their necks slit was thick with buzzing flies.
At least two Palestinians were killed in the rampage across West Bank villages near Ramallah over the weekend, according to residents, monitoring groups and paramedics, fueled by calls for retribution after a 14-year-old Israeli shepherd went missing in the surrounding area and was later found dead. The Israeli military said he was the victim of a “terrorist attack.”

Since Oct. 7, when Hamas-led militants killed about 1,200 people in Israel and plunged Gaza into war, there have been an average of seven settler attacks per day on Palestinians and their property — more than triple the rate in 2022 and the highest figure since the United Nations began keeping statistics in 2006.

At least 60 homes across the region were attacked and more than 100 vehicles were burned, according to Yesh Din, an Israeli group that monitors settler violence.
