were you taught the whole belief about graffiti being an eyesore/gross/opposite of art when you were younger and if so how do you think you personally got over that? do you have any insights on that whole topic?
I was taught growing up that grafitti was ugly, a sign of crime, and generally bad, but I was taught that by a person who said the same things about tattoos and piercings (concepts that everyone else around me enjoyed) so it was never really a opinion I took to heart.
That said, it definitely took me a long time to fully appreciate graffiti. for most of my life I've been fascinated by it, but ultimately neutral towards the concept. something that greatly changed my worldview was a class on public art that I took in college. for context, I spent 5 years in art school which heavily informed the was I view art, the art industry, the concept of ownership, and human labor -- but the vast majority of my art schooling focused on fine art, and even preached concepts such as genre hierarchy (for example: declaring that all figure paintings are inherently more valuable than any still life could be).
my public art class really shifted the definition of "art" for me beyond what even art history studies had previously, because what we focused on was often contemporary and not trapped within a historical context that was (implicitly) required to "excuse" any piece's lack of academic tradition.
in my public art class, we learned about graffiti directly, as well as stickers, posters, performance art, photography, sculptures, projections, and even product design, all of which where:
executed in a public space
political in nature
(usually) temporary
and (usually) executed without "permission", if not explicitly outside of the law
for me, "art" was no longer just something you made in a studio, for someone above you, to look pretty forever. art was a way to communicate important revolutionary ideas, to reclaim the space around you, it was temporal, it was radical, and it stretched the "rules" of both beauty and society.
Additionally, one of my classmates at the time was an active graffiti artist, and would speak openly about her work. I don't remember her exact words but she described the art form as "addicting" because of the freedom of expression it gave her, as well as the adrenaline rush of putting herself in danger in the name of art.
I want to clarify that I don't consider myself a graffiti artist (I'd call myself either a "sticker artist" or "public artist"). I'm not an expert on the genre either, I'm very much an outside appreciator. I'm also white, and therefor can't speak in any personal manner on how graffiti intersects with race (and how the hatred of graffiti is often born out of racism). my anecdote is just what I frequently keep in mind while observing and documenting the graffiti in my city. but hopefully it answers your questions somewhat :-)
also minor shout out to tumblr blogs like @radicalgraff for being one of the main inspirations behind me documenting this art on social media specifically

Graffiti is not vandalism, but a very beautiful crime
Where do you expect to see grafitti? Of course not in a museum. But it is an art form right? Why is it not in a museum?
Graffiti is found in many societies with different cultural contexts and has become a witness and an ethnographic source of information on urban art development (Waclawek, 2011). Modes of expression are mainly related to visibility, notoriety, choice of venue, transgression, and are often a mean to react and protest while remaining anonymous, by illegally introducing messages in the public space. Contemporary graffiti is also described by its controversial issues between social, style and aesthetic forms along with vandalism aspects. Facing a worldwide plethoric production, the assumption that Graffiti is a positive urban art form raises some paradoxical questions regarding “visual pollution”.
However, it is often seen as illicit production and vandalism asset. For instance, removing graffiti or restricting the practice of graffiti from the public space has been a controversial issue for artists and authorities. A question therefore arises: how can the aesthetic and pictorial aspects of these acts of creation be considered as acts of vandalism? (Bengsten, 2016)
Tumblr media
The growing interest leads to different perceptions probably with greater attention to the act of "heritage" at the expense of the act of protest. The patrimonialization of graffiti and, to a large extent, of Street Art is an essential point, because graffiti writers or street art practitioners often see institutions as "looters" who, come to preserve cultural acts that other public institutions have condemned (Omodeo, 2016). Heritage is primarily a process which, in principle, prevents any destruction or voluntary surrender of an artwork, which are a corollary of creation and its limitation of copyright in time. For most “writers”, Graffiti is not an act thought out on the basis of a future conservation. The issue is visibility and notoriety, by the number, size and/or the choice of venue. Regarding paint materials, so many spray paint brands are available to the general public in hardware stores. Graffiti writers would not necessarily comply with this rule as their preferences for brands are more related to habits, opportunities and word of mouth, along with, plastic qualities and not for resistance properties.
If Graffiti question the artistic approach of the artist and the context of their creation, it also poses those of alteration mechanisms, sometimes irreversible, these colors, which are significant from the point of view of heritage conservation. This encourage today to have a different perspective than that of the material history of the work with the creative process, the components used and the effects of environment parameters and ultimately, of time (Colombini, 2017). The traditional methods of conservation are questioned; which must intervene and what modifications in relation to the original one can be accepted? (Beerkens, 2005). Is it essential to invite the artist to take part in the heritage process? One must look at the field of Muralism, mainly in the USA, to find more innovative and frequent restoration procedures. Indeed, the restoration of murals, often monumental paintings, is a civic and collective act within the "neighborhood". The actors of the restoration/renovation are both volunteer civilians trained and supervised by experienced conservators, artists and more generally, of persons engaged in neighborhood committees (Shank, 2004).
This is not without rewards and sometimes reveals abuses that go beyond the artistic acts. The practice of graffiti and its legislation ambiguities are at stake. Graffiti and Street Art have their own definitions and interpretations, but they have something in common with illegal acts when it comes to the artistic act carried out on surfaces without the given permission by a property owner, whether public or private. We are now witnessing a radicalization of practices both from two points of view: legality and vandalism. The character of these acts explains why some artists (not only from the graffiti scene) have seen their career highlighted with arrests, penalties and sometimes trials, while their works are copyrightable (Moyne, 2016). The question of authenticity of paint arises when, aesthetic and style expertise, may not be sufficient to ascertain whether the juridical designation of Street Art as “Art” versus graffiti as vandalism. This is even truer for legal graffiti, mainly because of the variability of quality of the known and the good quality of spray paints, supposedly meant to last, as opposed to, the use of cheap brands of spray paint as illegal graffiti (Marsh, 2007).
This post relates to the duality of the modern graffiti phenomenon, as to whether it is a vandalism act or a cultural production. It focusses on a comparison study, mainly through artist interviews, between the evolving graffiti practices in Western major cities where illegality is often reclaimed by artists, and the fast emergence of graffiti in China, where this artistic expression is not only watched through its illegal and vandalism forms, but also for its aesthetic perceptions, though practices happen in restricted areas for expressing social, anti-official and political actions (Valjakka, 2011).
Graffiti are buffed, almost straight away, by city cleaners the so called “buffers”, who are in the streets to remove all sorts of inscriptions from plumbers to whatever girl ads. If they cannot scrap it out, they paint over and that is why graffiti never lasts. At the same time, the relationship with authorities has improved very much over the last few years. It is more and more common to negotiate with the police by explaining what graffiti writers are doing, colours and mode of expression for everybody, in order to, embellish the streets rather than litter or vandalize them. From a civilization where calligraphy has been the core of the artistic production, the writing on a wall has different meanings than in a Euro-American context (gangs and political + social protests). Confronting these two almost opposite approaches, it allows a better understanding of this artistic form, as to whether it is considered vandalism or art. This controversial interrogation can be illustrated by the artist Bando’s quote “Graffiti is not vandalism, but a very beautiful crime”.

Mike Huckabee Threatens the Jews (Again)
The Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, an umbrella group representing (as the name implies) many of the most significant Jewish groups in the US,* recently nominated Dianne Lob to be its new chair. Lob was most recently chairwoman of HIAS, a Jewish immigrant rights advocacy group and a mainstay of progressive Jewish politics that has taken a leading role in opposing President Trump's draconian and racist anti-immigrant policies. Sadly, many people came to know HIAS because they were the specific Jewish organization that Pittsburgh shooter was fixated upon in "justification" for his massacre. He hated HIAS for doing what it has done for years -- assist needy refugees in securing a safe and thriving home in America. Hence, in my quick thoughts on Jewish organizations, all I wrote on HIAS was "If you don't like HIAS, you're a monster." Of course, the world is full of monsters. And one of them is former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee, who, despite not being Jewish, decided he was in a position to dictate to Jews who our institutional representatives should be.
W/O dispute @realDonaldTrump is best US President ever as ally to @IsraeliPM so why would Conf of Presidents of Jewish Groups nominate anti-Trump Dianne Lob fmrly of HIAS (ties to radical groups) to lead them? Makes NO sense! Hope they reconsider-for their own sake!
— Gov. Mike Huckabee (@GovMikeHuckabee) April 21, 2020
For "their own sake". Subtle. Huckabee has a habit of expressing his great affinity for the Jews in the form of veiled threats and antisemitic jabs. For example, when he was criticized by the ADL for comparing failing to confront the national debt to the Holocaust (speaking of Holocaust trivialization!), did he apologize? No. He lashed out, darkly warning that "Israel and Jewish people need to make friends, not insult the ones they have." (The ADL, spinelessly, then apologized to Huckabee). He's complained that American Jews just aren't as supportive of Israel as evangelical Christians. He even spread a baseless conspiracy theory that antisemitic grafitti in Chicago was actually the false flag work of left-wing Jewish students seeking to smear Donald Trump -- a grotesque smear on which he doubled-down when challenged. The arrogance Huckabee is displaying (and I haven't even gotten into the idea that American Jewish organizations should choose their leadership based on fealty to Netanyahu) is both astounding and par for the course. Even if he hadn't repeatedly demonstrated his contempt for the American Jewish majority he still wouldn't be entitled to pick our leaders. American Jews are not his serfs, and we do not run scared from his brand of thuggish intimidation. Meanwhile, ZOA -- which already has gotten a warning from the COP regarding its inability to play nicely with others -- jumped into the fray to not just oppose Lob's nomination as chairwoman, but to suggest that HIAS should be expelled from the COP outright. When you're outflanking Dani frickin' Dayan from the right.... Huckabee and ZOA deserve each other, but the Jewish community deserves better than either. I hope Lob is welcomed into her new role, and that her ascension begins the important process of healing some very real rifts that have grown between the American Jewish community and an appointed leadership which has taken actual, mainstream progressive Jews for granted for too long. * Though this can be a bit misleading. Some legacy organizations that once were prominent but today are basically shells remain members, and other important groups of more recent vintage have been denied membership notwithstanding their prominence -- J Street being the obvious example. via The Debate Link https://ift.tt/2xQrmn7

Taking Charge
An awful smell hits your nostrils as you make your way through Green Hill Zone; It completely upset what SHOULD be a very pleasant experience of breezing through the forest covered part of your sister’s home.
The smell however is nothing new, so you don’t really notice it. In fact, even if there being a smell at all is kind of upsetting, you are grateful. The pollution isn’t as heavy on these parts of South Island, making it so that the sky is actually blue. All things considered it’s one of the better places to be, so long as you stayed away from the sea and desert areas.
You decided from an early age that you’d be grateful for the small victories, but not complacent enough to accept defeat. Your sister taught you that.
Your twin tails make a pleasant and comforting sound behind you as you propel yourself forward towards her home. You’re hoping to have a good time today, again, you try to value good times when they come.
Your name is Ellie “Tails” Copper (the fox). Even though you are eight years of age it is only today you’ll be visiting your sister’s home for the first time.
You’re sure it’s gonna be a rad time.
You’re checking some info on your Ellie Electric. The Ellie Electric is a recent invention, sort of your attempt at replicating Aunt Sally’s “Nicole”. You’re very proud of it, and basically never leave home without it. You tap the screen a few times checking over the coordinates. You don’t actually need to do this as you have photographic memory, but it eases this annoying feeling of anxiety you have.
Eventually you don’t have to look though. You look up to see...Perhaps the largest plane you have ever seen. This thing is massive!! You doubt it was made for Mobians OR Humans. And you don’t think Seedrians would make something like this either!
Maybe Black Arms? Though the thought of those being here and leaving such a thing behind is concerning to you. You don’t want Mobius to end up like Earth.
Oh! You’ve been spacing out while thinking about all this, trying to work it out in your head, a way too common ocurrance. You really need to stop getting lost in your own thoughts, that’s how he gets you.
You take one last look at your surroundings before you knock the door. No badniks around, but you can still see the ominous tower of Prison Hill at the distance.
You knock on the plane’s door, once. You don’t have time to think about knocking a second time when it opens, just like that.
Standing in front of you, just slightly taller than you is your big sister, Roll The Hedgehog.
She looks great as always. All bright and blue, shooting you a sharp toothed friendly smile. Her quills styled in a mohawk, but kept big and long enough that she can still curl into a ball. She wears green shades on her forehead, a leather jacket with sleeves torn off, and a red running jumpsuit with a stylized symbol of two blue stars. The Freedom Fighter’s Symbol. You wear one too on a pin on your bomber jacket.
“oh slam!! ellie copper coming through!” She says in a fun tone of voice while making way for you to enter her home. You laugh, she always makes this joke but it always gets you anyway. A sister joke. It helps that you love hearing your new name.
“nice one! keep ‘em rolling sis!” You joke back, and she laughs way too loud so you know it gets her. You slap some double fives as you make your way in to keep it cool. She slaps HARD though but you pretend it’s no biggie.
“welcome to the rolling thunder lil’ gal!” The Rolling Thunder being, of course, what she calls her crib.
Honestly you have mixed feelings about the place. The walls are covered in honestly very cool grafitti depicting all manner of radical words such as “Juice” and “Jam”. Stylized pictures of stars, guitars and other cool stuff. But also a graffiti mural of the old Green Hill Zone on one wall.
The place is undeniably messy though, and dark. The lights didn’t work and it was kind of dusty in here. There was furniture, but all the couches were torn no doubt by Roll’s quills, and you knew the fridge and microwave didn’t work. It occurs to you that if Roll wants to shower she likely has to turn to the dirty contaminated Beach water.
It was the reality many Mobians lived, but Roll rarely- if ever complained, not these days anyway.
You notice it actually smells pretty nice in here however, so you can’t complain.
You are snapped from your in depth thoughtstream by Roll snapping her fingers in front of you. To anyone else that might seem rude but you actually really appreciate it.
“oh!! it’s pretty sweet in here- smells pretty nice too!!”
Roll’s grin turns into a soft smile. She closes the door behind her. “yeah it’s from my hangspace- come here i’ll show you! it’s honestly the best part of this place”
She leads you to another room, and a specific seat. Must have been from a lower class section of the plane. She kicks a seat and it opens up to reveal a slide. She waves you over, curling into a ball and letting herself fall. You just decide to slide down instead.
You feel like you should be having more fun with this slide, but honestly? You feel like maybe you outgrew stuff like this. You’re more focused on why there’s an underground base under this crash site at all.
You thankfully don’t have enough time to get lost in your thoughts when you are surprised by all the green you see.
No, not just green. Yellow and Blue and Red and all sorts of colourful plantlife. Grass and flowers everywhere, far underground. The air is free of pollution and honestly it’s a bit overwhelming, in a good way. There’s small lamps everywhere, no doubt charged with battery power that are giving certain plants light. How much would those cost? You know Roll isn’t doing the best money wise.
You put the money concerns aside for now. Aunt Sal drags her enough about that as it is.
“It’s like a little greenhouse!!” You say with some pretty genuine excitement in your voice. You do this just in time to notice the guitar in the corner of the room, which Roll reaches for and starts fiddling with, testing the strings. The guitar looks incredibly worn out.
“it is!!! this is where i like to nap, and jam- these lil’ guys love all kinds of rockin’ tunes, they like to party it up like it’s the new millenium!! i just jump in and start playin’ and these lil’ dudes sway and dance all day. it’s pretty chill”
She then points to the tallest flower in the garden. A blue spiky one.
“I call this one Roll The 2nd. I love her!!” She then points the the SECOND tallest flower, an orange one. “This one is Tails Squared- because you’re a square!”
She jokes while ruffling your hair, you grumble a bit. You don’t actually mind at all though.
“They’re very cool!!! Not many places with clean air in this planet....Hey- Roll?”
“What’s up sis-not-cis?”
“I was wondering if-” You laugh, you just got that. “HANG ON WHAT- SISNOT-” That freaking GOT you. You’re on the grass, laughing. Roll looks pretty smug from up there.
“you good there ellie?” She says, lightly pressing the top of her shoe against your arm in a mock kick. “did you just die from my mondo groucho humour?”
You laugh harder. Eventually you stop and you get up. She looks like she’s queen of the world from how smug she is just for making someone laugh.
“Okay so- so- hang on” You need time to catch your breath “I was wondering if maybe this thing could fly again?”
She shakes her head, once. “Nah! That’d probs give me away to the local Egg Boss. Aint want one of those shellmunchers on my tail, y’know?”
“Oh..”
“Although...” She puts a hand to her chin. “we can’t fly it right now- but getting it flight ready just in case might be a good idea! I’ll have to run it by sal, she’s always ready to fund anything if it gives us a hypothetical advantage, what with the trap cards and mind games and such”
You’re only half listening at that later half because you’re already fiddling with some exposed cables from the wall. Sometimes you just take charge without thinking first, it’s probably a bad ha-
Oh! The lights just turned on!
“OH SLAM!! WHAT?” Roll looks absolutely ecstatic “SIS YOU’RE FREAKING AMAZING-”
Roll cheers and goes on about how she has a fridge and a microwave now. And how much fun you’re gonna have fixing this old place together. Overall you think you did good.
Yeah, this was a fun day. You hope you get days like these more often.
