The Lack of Nuance with House Velayron.

I want to establish that the strange relationship to blackness in the show is confusing.

The show runners didn't write black characters. The Velaryons are Valyrian.

The cast is filled with black actors who draw parallels in their interviews to their blackness and this house. Without correction.

In a similar vain to how house Targaryen, house Hightower and house Lannister are all played by white people the Velaryons look black but are not written o be perceived as black in the narrative.

It's not inherently colorblind casting because the intent was to differentiate the Velaryons and Targaryens and to show how obvious Rhaenyra’s adultery is. It does, however, act in the same way. Their blackness isn't supposed to impact the narrative past that extent. Unfortunately, that's not how race works in media. Look at Bridgerton. For example, they knew they wanted to include racial elements to justify their alternate history while imploring colorblind casting and building these characters around their actors.

The biggest issue that comes from this understanding is that because they didn't write the script with black people in mind and just wrote it thematically to reach up to the dance, they end up sidelining and putting black characters into a lot of reductive stereotypes and fulfilling harmful tropes that contribute to the oppression of real world black people.

Laena is the second choice bride for Daemon, a white prince. He spends their marriage, making it known that he'd prefer to be with his other niece while not discounting the fact that they are happy enough for their circumstance.

Laena is a black girl who is passed over twice in the narrative for white women for different reasons. Her husband can't truly love her or their black children to the full extent he would her white counterpart.

Laenor is a gay man who can not do his duty to the realm and, as a result, does not sleep with his wife, causing her to look for a man who will essentially making his successor not from his blood.

Laenor is a black gay man explicitly traumatized during a wedding, not being able to fulfill his duty. His wife finds someone willing to do it during this time and he agrees to take the blame. The kid doesn't look like him. This pattern and behaviour continues because it can cost these kids their life. Rhaenyra actively contributes to the erasure of black succession for this house, choosing instead to sleep with and have kids by a white man.

Certain things work with this change. Corlys saying 'history does not remember blood it remembers names' gives 'I'm not black I'm OJ'.

The perception of success defines him more than the inherent loss of blackness he's pandering, too.

That wasn't the show's intention, though. None of my reading was intended to be placed on the story.

They made Laena into a sapphire who ended her life brutally after thinking it would be lost to childbirth.

The statistical and historical relationship to black women and childbirth was a burden the show runners did not consider.

It gets worse when the writers call it a 'dragon riders death' because it's so much more brutal than the death she endures in the book. A black woman chooses a brutal death as opposed to being helpless in childbirth. That's not imagery that was utilized well.

Laenor rededicating his life to his family after his sisters death only to be replaced by a white man and killed off violently (not really though, he just abandoned his family).

They also casually make him and his dad absent fathers.

With Corlys, they unknowingly employ Uncle Tom tropes with him while making him absent from his family, and next season, a cheater with an outside family.

Vaemond is a black man being gaslit all around him, and when he stands up for what is a real concern to have in his shoes, in a moment where he chooses to be unapologetic and angry he's brutally killed by a white protagonist. They punish the black character who didn't want to assimilate.

Again, this wasn't the writers intention because they are not writing black character. With someone like Nettles, this relationship to the narrative will be clearer. The racism and prejudice she faces in the story are different from the Velaryons because she's perceived as other or black in this world. Like Missandei and Grey Worm, she's a black character in the universe.

However, the imagery that these things invoke can not be avoided just because you don't focus on them. That's even more reckless because you get the diversity points, claim there is a reason behind their blackness, and then utilize reductive tropes and stereotypes.

I truly think they should've utilized the Bridgerton method and attributed the difference to dragonriding and the fact that a lesser dragon riding family would still be better than a rich non dragon riding family and that their ability to have dragon riders now should evaluate their status even though, through the show we see it not shifting their dynamic.

Racism and the stereotypes that come from it aren't based on anything tangible. White hair dragon riders through marriage and people with white hair who inherently can claim a dragon by blood alone is the same nonsense racism is based on. It's not really an important distinction but a necessary one to perpetuate and hold power. It could simply be a prejudice that the Velaryons acknowledged is there and are trying to break through.

This is a good show. It was beautifully done with the source material they had, but consciousness when it comes to perception and duality are so important when it comes to media, especially when writing for marginalized groups.

I would've loved to see Laenor and Rhaenyra have a discussion along the lines of her icing him out of their family unit, replacing him during a hard time. Or him actively acknowledging the burden of his position as heir with Luke and relating to his inability to do his duty and Luke's burden of perceived bastardy.

I'd love to see a Corlys and Vaemond Arguemnt of Corlys' assimilation to the politics of Westeros and the identity of house Velayron being lost as a result.

Laena could've acknowledged her worth to their marriage, calling Daemon out on his complacency to their collective happiness and expecting him to be better would've ate, cleared and devoured.

Imagine that last scene coupled with book Laena's death. I would've secured the Emmy for Nanna.

Not only does this add to the world building, but it sets up future (technically past) relationships between the Velaryons and someone like Nettles. Between them and Targaryens.

I need a cold cigarette. I will end this by saying the framework should they decide to establish this better is already there. It's just unfortunate that we lost three cool people before the nuance would hit.

How Climate Change is threatening Culture's Worldwide

Mass relocations are a thing that is set to happen thanks to climate change. And as more natural disasters happen that circuits the need for climate change education, more doomsday scenarios appear instead of healthy solutions to help save the planet--with the water rising from melting ice caps, it is destroying island and southern communities, and producing record number droughts in different sides of the planet. Why then does the media frame climate change as something inevitable, and how does that produce apathy, not just in regular people, but in these companies as well?

The research about climate change is all about education; informing the public about counter-options to reduce carbon levels in the air. I know this could benefit one person, if not the whole group, and that is what’s important. So how do we define apathy toward climate change? Well, the definition of apathy first is a lack of feeling or emotion towards something. It is based on a variety of subjects, like race, sex, education, age, food, culture, groups of people, etc. How does apathy relate to other negative concepts like indifference, and how are those emotions dangerous? ‘’How does apathy come to exist? Through ignorance of a toxic and uncoordinated action. Framing is used as an institution and illustrates how it shapes media framing in a toxic event. Even in systems who are supposed to help the average person, are people seen to have a ‘tendency to behave in accordance with what they see as being in their own interests.’’

heya, I really like the way you talk about how obsessed media is with centering everything around romance as the ultimate be-all-end-all of a relationship, as well as your love and respect for old pieces of media (I love Anne of Green Gables too!!).

I wanted to ask if you think it’s possible to separate these old pieces of media from their respective societies general views on social issues? If every person creating a piece of art is a product of their time period, is there a way you go about dealing with things like inherent racism / classism / sexism in the work?

Because despite really enjoying old media, I often end up coming up against actions and behavior in fiction that I and my family have had to deal with directly and regularly (for reference, I’m not white lol) in real life, which is often a little exhausting, especially when this behavior is coming from a character that simultaneously holds up values of goodness and kindness and love and respect for all. In these cases it always feels like those values are only directed to people they deem of as worthy of respect, and that anyone that doesn’t fall into this group is subhuman. It’s like this person can decide if a human counts as a human, which feels very human-centric. Why is one group of people allowed to decide if another group deserve to be treated like humans? That feels like a huge amount of power. Shouldn’t only God have control over this and not individual people (and didn’t He already do this when he created humanity?) Anyway that’s some rambling. My main point is that sometimes it’s hard to enjoy a piece of media when I know that the person creating it held beliefs (either unknowingly because everyone around them also held those beliefs, or with the full understanding of how much suffering views like that cause) that are the opposite of my beliefs, and that in some cases disregard my right to freedom and a good life.

This is incredibly rambly and I’m not even sure if what I’m asking makes sense, but I’m curious to know what you think of stuff like this! You’re very articulate and I’ve been enjoying reading through your arguments, they’re surprisingly well thought out! Okay I’m going to stop typing now before I write a novel in your inbox—

You’re totally right about God and humanity. Every human being is made in the image of God; He gets to decide what they’re worth. Humans don’t.

The short answer (that I’ll inevitably add to with my own rambling) is, “don’t focus on the individual who wrote the story; focus on the truth that’s in the story.”

You might have read one of my posts where I said something like, “when a storyteller tells the story, it’s told. It’s like speaking out loud: once you say something, you can’t take it back. You might not have meant what you said, but you still said it—if your meaning didn’t line up with your words, then you should have been more careful with the words you chose, because you can’t change what you said,” something like that.

The point of that post is: words (and stories) have their own meaning. That’s why it’s so important to choose them carefully.

For example: If Hitler says, “the sky is blue,” even though he’s a monster and a terrible person and clearly wrong about most things, the words he spoke, the sentence “the sky is blue” is still true. It’s a true statement. So you could say, “Hitler is a monster, he’s wrong about most things, you can’t trust him and he shouldn’t be taken as an authority on anything…but he was right when he said “the sky is blue.”” Because at that point, who Hitler is and whether or not he’s credible, or even whether or not he’s right about MOST things, doesn’t change what color the sky is. Truth is truth, no matter who points it out—OR fails to point it out.

So, when someone like a classic author uses their story to say something like: “The truth will set you free,” but then you find out that they were pro-slavery, here’s what you do. You say, “this author was a human being who, like all human beings, had some stuff right, and some stuff wrong. It’s my job to figure out what they got right and what they didn’t get right.” (That’s actually your job with anything anyone tells you.)

Or, to put it simply, like my granny used to say: “Eat the cookie, spit out the nuts.”

And remember, just because you “like the story” doesn’t mean you also “100% agree with everything the storyteller ever said or did in their entire lives.” No. Liking the story means you appreciated that one thing that the storyteller said, for it’s own sake.

Truth is truth. If Louisa May Alcott’s story says, “living a humble life of self-sacrifice is worth more than fame and glory,” but then later I find out that she was racist, guess what? The lesson “living a humble life etc.,” is still true. Maybe she was APPLYING that truth in a really flawed way…but the lesson in the story is still true. Her human imperfections don’t make that lesson untrue. That’s what’s beautiful and terrible about communication, and stories, in general: you can say something, and once it’s said, it stands on it’s own—with or without you.

Point is:

People are wrong. Humans never, ever, see everything in life 100% correctly 100% of the time…and they very rarely communicate life’s truths correctly, either. But…truth is truth, it’s never wrong, and sometimes even an imperfect human can point it out and shine a great light on it for other humans to see.

If you decide that a person has to be right about everything—or maybe they don’t have to be right about everything, but they at least have to be right about very important issues like race and humanity and even religion—before you’ll consider anything they have to say, you’ll find that you can’t consider anything anyone has to say, ever. Because all people are flawed. But even a broken clock is right twice a day. Look for truth—real, objective truth, never mind who’s saying it—and appreciate that. Eat the cookie, spit out the nuts.

It’s fine to celebrate an author, or filmmaker, or director, but honestly, none of them are perfect. None of them have perfect worldviews where they treat everyone in their lives equally and lovingly. So really, you should never have assigned so much importance to the human author in the first place. Assign that importance to truth, instead.

Mild soapbox, kind of unrelated to what I think your question is, below

We keep doing this thing in society where we’re like, “hey, you know that Historically Significant Person we all owe so much to and have celebrated for years because of their Beloved Work? Turns out they were RACIST/SEXIST/AN IMPERFECT HUMAN! You know what that means? Everything we know about them, and their Beloved Work, must BURN.”

And then we throw the baby out with the bath water. Like…like people who make Beloved Works weren’t humans—they were some kind of super-humans—and they should never have had any flaws for us to uncover. Then when we do uncover those flaws, we decide that they must have been wrong about everything, including the Beloved Work. Which makes…no sense.

And, it’s hypocritical. Do you think that in 100 years, kids are going to pick up a book about you and your life, and say, “man, this person was 100% trustworthy and never got anything in life wrong. Anything they wrote, any story they created, is therefore worth enjoying.” No!

The people who lived in the 19th century did not all realize that they were committing historical sins they’d be discredited for in the future. They lived what was, for them, completely normal lives, wallowing in and sometimes even celebrating things that we know were wrong. But just because we know something they never realized does not make us better than them, or able to declare that they were wrong about everything they ever said.

Do you think we’ll be any different than they were? In 2080, don’t you want the younger generation to take the good things you said and the lessons you learned that are true, and just give you grace for any wrongs you committed? Or do you want them to totally discredit you, and your lessons, and your life, when they find out you were doing something that, to you, seemed totally normal?

We’re all imperfect. We’re all wrong sometimes. But truth is never wrong, and sometimes imperfect people can help one another to appreciate perfect truths. It just takes grace, and it takes focusing on truth and celebrating truth, rather than focusing so much on humans and trying to set them up to be super-human.

My Style Analysis: Devi in Ben's Dream Part 2

Alright folks we are gonna take another ring around the rosy everything Ben got thinking of this dream.

One thing I kick myself for despite the fact that both Stranger Things and NHIE are Netflix productions is why I didn't see it sooner.

Devi is likely dressed in an updated version of Princess Daphne from the classic arcade game Dragon's Lair, a Don Bluth production.

Yes the archetypal Damsel In Distress whose character design was based on Playboy pinups, who looks like she'd fall out of her lingerie (lots of fashion tape must be used) and part of the Dumb Blonde stereotype that was used do demean conventionally attractive women AND women who didn't fit the mold regardless of physical appeal. And her Knight In Shining Armor? Dirk.

Despite fitting the archetypal notion of the Knight, Dirk is not drawn as desirably as Daphne, part of the reasons many feminists found the games to be sexist (with Space Ace being a marginal improvement given that Kimberly, a redheaded Daphne, is sassy and spunky and is able to take initiative in saving the day) and Daphne is a passive figure in all this.

Now what about ST2 and NHIE? Well....

In the opener to the 2nd Season of the highly popular sci-fi period piece, the boys (Will Byers, Mike Wheeler, Dustin Henderson, and Lucas Sinclair) head over to a 1984 perfect arcade where Dustin tries to best Lucas's high score at the game only to have Dirk killed by the dragon and Lucas gloat about being able to save the blonde beauty. Why is this important?

Because New Girl in Town Max Mayfield ("Mad Max") beat Dustin's high score on Dig Dug and soon Lucas and Dustin are both in competition for the acerbic tomboy's feelings, thus marking a foreshadowing of who gets the girl.

It's Lucas, of course. But despite time zones, episode by episode conflicts, and decades separating the couples, Lumax and Benvi do have a lot in common. Buckle up because we will be talking about how Western Society treats difference in ethnicity, heritage, race, and appearance and gender.

One thing to make clear that the image of the Knight in Shining Armor and the helpless Princess is often obnoxiously Eurocentric, especially of the Gallic or Anglo persuasion. Princess Daphne is tall, leggy, slim and curvaceous with long, blonde hair and blue eyes with a voice high on helium and a babylike demeanor, a kind of innocence attributed to respectable European women that Karens have exploited for generations often to damaging effects; Dirk is meant to stand in as traditionally masculine but hapless enough to be relatable to the (assumed) male players of the game, all he has to do is save the girl to have any shot with her leading to the unfortunate implication that young men are entitled to the opposite gender, especially the ones considered the most desirable but he isn't classically handsome, historically men have been able to get away with not living up to beauty standards by being able to be identified with their talent, intelligence, heroics, finances, economic savvy, work ethic, virility, strong character, sense of humor, or being a decent person. And of course it's been said (and proved) that white men can get away with being mediocre and still scale the ladder of society, whereas his conditionally white and racialized counterparts have to work harder to even take their steps on an often more perilous ladder.

Historically in our society, both members of the Black and Jewish Diaspora have had a....hard time of it: often as targets of derision, fear, violence, and disdain for the jobs they were sentenced to do (often in less "respectable" areas) and this also affected how (and this is not to take away from how insidious anti-Black and anti-Semite misogyny is, go ask Meghan Thee Stallion and Elana Steinberg) men of these groups were depicted: either desexualized and non-threatening to the point of being humiliated or over-sexualized and "out to take our wimmin" and scapegoated because won't someone please think of the children?

Sometimes if they were "lucky", they got to be "the best friend" to the less ethnic white guy who presents as WASPy. They could be attractive (if not more) or charming (if not more) or compelling to watch (if not more) as the hero but don't get the leading man treatment or are the replaceable awesome love interest who are moved aside for the more flawed and relatable white character (look at Courtney B. Vance in Sex and the City); there is also ugggh beauty standards that favor Eurocentric gentile features over non-European features. Dirk is drawn in that classic homely cartoon guy style while both Lucas and Ben are more conventionally desirable to their girlfriends (and many fans of their respective shows) but while Dirk is entitled to Daphne's affections (and by implication, her body), both Lucas and Ben (who are both younger than Dirk) have to not only save the girl but they also have to gentle their way (a term I learned as a kid) by being more emotionally available and being there for their girlfriend's vulnerabilities and be willing to risk heartbreak. Both @urspopinionsareshit (on masculinity and anti-Semitic tropes) and u/absentminded88 on Reddit (on Lucas Sinclair and tropes focusing on African American masculinity) have wrote extensively on these topics but my point still stands that often men of both diasporas were often overlooked as paragons of ideal masculinity.

Now it's one for the ladies!

I picked these because Max and Devi have something that poor Daphne lacks: illuminating friendships with other women and looks like I will have to toss a wet mildew blanket into the party.

Let's talk feminine stereotypes and difference! *dodges tomatoes*

It's quite a stretch to suggest that both Max and Devi don't fit a conventional eurocentric blonde beauty as both Sadie Sink (who's also a model) and Maitreyi Ramikrishnan are both pretty girls with expressive eyes with slim figures but yet many women of color and redheaded women were often not considered paragons of beauty (if they weren't being over-sexualized as homewreckers and temptresses) and often not considered feminine due to depictions of their "fiery" tempers at best or being seen as castrating harpies. Max and Devi both struggle with their society's view of how girls should behave, have dealt with trauma, not taking shit from boys or authority figures or even other girls, chafing against certain expectations put on them while trying to navigate femininity away from their mothers (who they have strained relationships with) and with the help of mass media (eep). But ultimately both girls find empowerment in their relationships with other women, finding out how capable they really are even with threatening a man with a weapon or destroying his skateboard, and in their own self-expression and put-upon uniqueness. Whereas Daphne existed to look pretty and adore Dirk (and by extension the assumed cis male player), Max and Devi have agency and ideas with formidable personalities that intimidate their peers and do-nothing adult authority figures. If they need saving, they at least try to resist and are capable of it.

This initiative is reflected in the dream: Devi declares her academic accomplishments and capability are superior to Ben's and that is a turn on for him, she manages to Jedi mind-trick his shirt off, and declares she will take charge of their lovemaking. Perfect combo of sensuality, brains, beauty, and gumption.

Both Lumax and Benvi prove that there is an appeal towards seeing couples not fall into strict gender roles where one is more capable than the other and one has work hard to meet a trophy wife standard and about thirty years after Daphne and Kimberly of Space Ace, we have seen the sassy, vocal, independent love interest role evolve from love interest to being the protagonist/main character of her story.

I just had a long debate about representation and inclusivity and the new trailer for The Little Mermaid, and I think I understand why so many people, who claim to not be racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/etc, are still against the re-telling of a story with a character being played by a person of color, being played by a woman, being presented as gay, being played by a trans actor, etc…

It might be because they feel that the new version negates the previous version. Like if Superman, who has always been white and male since the comics and in every media representation, were suddenly played by a black female actor, they feel that all previous representations as white male Superman suddenly cease to exist.

Yes, Superman was used as an example in the debate, and that’s when I realized what the issue was.

In this case, my argument would be that Superman’s story has always been more intrinsically connected to his skin color and gender identity than we think, and therefore if you changed the gender and skin color of the characters you would have to make A LOT of adjustments to the story, and then it wouldn’t be the same story, it would be different. Because if a black female alien landed on Earth in Middle America in the 1930s, I think Superman’s story would have turned out very different… Therefore Superman’s identity and story is a lot more related to how he is perceived as a white male in the time and place where he’s supposed to exist. This is a story that, although fictional, is heavily influenced by U.S. culture and political history, those two things give the fictional events of Superman a lot of context.

Meanwhile, The Little Mermaid does not have any of that. Even if Hans Christian Andersen wrote The Little Mermaid as a red-headed white woman, she’s still very much a fantasy character in a fantasy world where mermaids exist. The story of The Little Mermaid has very little do to with her skin or hair color, and everything to do with her being a little mermaid, again a fictional character in a fictional world, who wants to know what it’s like to live on land and be with this guy that she saw once. Basically she can be any color you want, the story is the same. In fact, I would actually hope that they, the makers of the new Little Mermaid, make the effort to include some kind of historical context for when the story is supposed to be set and how different it would be if the titular mermaid were black, make it a little more interesting, make it a slightly different story.

Which brings me back to the original point: people seem to fear the eradication of their beloved character that they grew up with. But the original Little Mermaid movie, with its animated red-headed white character is not going away, it doesn’t cease to exist. It’s still the first one, in fact it’s the SOURCE material more than the fairy tale (which is very different, it has a very different and very depressing ending and nobody sings beloved songs), and you can keep liking it as much as you want, while new generations get to pick from two versions (three if you count the original fairy tale). And they can like one of the them or the other or both. (For example, keeping with the Disney live-action remakes, I liked the remake of Beauty and the Beast, I still prefer the original animated Aladdin, and I haven’t even bothered to watch the new Lion King because I know I’m going to hate it, those lions look grumpy as heck).

And it makes me think that people don’t really understand how media works…? Because precisely the convenient thing about media is that you get to tell the same story multiple times, keeping it the same or making slight changes or making big changes… whatever you like. There have literally been four versions of Spider-Man in the span of 20 years…

And it makes me wonder if more people would benefit from reading fanfiction.

For example, you watch any of the MCU Spider-Man movies, they’re all great. But now you wonder: what if Spider-Man was gay and fell in love with a boy named MJ? What if Spider-Man was a trans woman this whole time? What if Spider-Man never had powers and met MJ whilst working in a coffee shop (hashtag coffee shop AU)? What if they didn’t meet in school but at uni (hashtag college AU)? What if they met because MJ texted the wrong number and got Peter instead (hashtag wrong number AU)? What if they went to Hogwarts (hashtag Hogwarts AU)? What if, what if, what if?????

None of those stories are the same, yet they contain the same core characters and exist simultaneously in the same universe in a way, and we get to explore different ideas, different possibilities for these characters, different scenarios no matter how fantastic, different romantic couplings, even crossovers with other media… And if you can’t find the story that you’re looking for, if your headcanon has not been written by someone already, then you get to write it yourself!

In fact, you don’t even have to read fanfiction to consider the alternate possibilities. They actually exist in popular media. Consider Spider-Man: No Way Home. Sure, all three Spider-Men are white male, but only one of them has been in love with a girl named Gwen, only one of them has been in the Avengers, only one of them has had the most iconic upside-kiss off all time, and all three of them have fought different villains throughout their stories. And then suddenly they team up and have the cutest, fan-servicing interactions! Like brothers! Look, they´re all pointing at each other, lol.

And don’t even get me started on Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse! Arguably the best multiverse movie yet, give me a live-action adaptation of that, I doubt that it will do any justice to the outstanding animation, but I kinda want to see Miles Morales team up with SpiderGwen, Jake Johnson, Peter Porker, Nicholas Cage and Peni Parker against Kathryn Hahn.

Or better yet, consider the show Loki, where actual variants of the same character exist, like fanfiction: what if Loki was a woman? What if Loki had remained with the Frost Giants? What if Loki was a child? What if Loki was black? What if Loki was a crocodile? Their stories are all so different, and all so real, and they all exist at once, althought not necessarily in the same universe. But we could explore every single one of them. Throg is real. Croki is real.

Or even better, consider the show actually called WHAT IF…? Where alternate scenarios for so many of the MCU stories already told are present. What if Peggy Carter took the supersoldier serum instead of Stever Rogers, so we get Captain Britain instead of Captain America? What if all the original Avengers were murdered? What if Tony never became Ironman? What if they were all ZOMBIES???

I do feel like originality seems to have come to a stand-still. Everything seems to be a sequel, a live-action remake, an adaptation, etc etc etc. There are THREE Pinocchio films coming out this year. All three very different (one is by Guillermo del Toro, which I’m looking forward to the most, it’s sure to be the most interesting, but the Disney one, although it looks to be a frame-by-frame adaptation of the animation, has Tom Hanks and Joseph Gordon-Levitt, so I’d be lying if I said I didn’t want to experience that), but ultimately I don’t think we need three… not in the same year, at least.

And now we’re going to have two little mermaids. If the adaptation doesn’t update it a little and make it a little more aspirational (I don’t know if I want to sit through a movie in which a young woman’s voice is stolen, and then she’s basically only valued because of her looks and then she gets the guy… wow, what a progressive story), if it’s only a frame-by-frame live-action adaptation, then it’s a lost opportunity to make the story into a little something more. But I get why simply the fact that the titular character being played by a woman of color is a step-forward, I would simply wish for something more. I’ll probably still watch it, thought. Whether I like it or not is yet to be determined (but it will be determined by the quality of the story, not by the skin color of the protagonist).

I do think that, if you want to do a remake of a story whilst changing the skin color or gender identity or sexuality of their original character(s), you do have, like with any other remake that does not make any of those changes, an obligation to try to do something else with the story, and a BIPOC character or a character with a different gender identity or expression or sexuality is the perfect opportunity. Make it more interesting, reinvent it, update something, etc. Don’t just keep it exactly the same and only change the packaging slightly. Then you’re just trying to trick people into giving you money for nothing.

What I can’t put up with is the double standards of people complaining that the little mermaid is supposed to be white and why are they now turning her black, when they don’t say a word when BIPOC characters continue to be whitewashed in media to this day.

The racial aspects of Sci Fi, Fantasy and other forms media

NO. 1

One of the blog posts I have written before was titled ‘Mean World Syndrome’, which talked about how race and media affects everyone on a global scale. Racial aspects of sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media have long been a source of controversy. From the stereotypes of aliens in Star Trek to the whitewashing of characters in movies like Avatar, Prince of Persia, etc. these issues have been a major source of discussion in the media landscape. In many cases, racial stereotypes have been used to create a sense of ‘otherness’ for the characters of color in order to reinforce a sense of white superiority. This has led to criticism from fans, activists, and academics who have called for more representation of people of color in sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media.

In the entertainment business, inclusivity is hard to come by, and in some cases, the representation of characters of color in these genres is inadequate and often offensive. Characters of color are often relegated to the sidelines and made to serve as the backdrop to white characters’ stories, or they are depicted as tokens and stereotypes. This lack of meaningful representation has led to a push for more diverse casts in sci-fi, fantasy, and other forms of media. ‘‘Like many social sciences, international/intercultural/interethnic communication and media studies are primarily an Anglo-American media images have always been critically dissected, often by scholars with some kind of privileged tie to other cultures—Most makers of these blockbusters are mostly white males with English as their mother tongue, mutli-millionaires or aspiring to become one as soon as possible. They usually internalize a mid-Atlantic view of global history and geography, its central myths and legends. So many blockbusters remain ethnocentric, even today—they tend to make non-Westerners look at the world through Western eyes.’’

In addition to representation in the stories themselves, the casting of actors to bring these characters to life has been another source of debate. Many actors of color have argued that they are often typecast into roles that are stereotypical or that do not reflect the true diversity of the world. Films or TV shows with fantasy/sci-fi themes on Netflix, like Chambers or Raising Dion are not being properly advertised because, like Inclusive Advertising: What’s Holding the Industry Back? claims, ‘‘The industry itself is not diverse: The advertising industry — across the ecosystem and at all levels — is not representative, which is itself a barrier to creating representative and inclusive content. Only 19% of in-house and 23% of agency survey respondents reported that their leader almost always considers the demographic diversity of their team when developing content. That, and individuals (in these marketing companies) lack awareness of and access to the knowledge, skills, resources, and tools to create representative and inclusive content. Individuals are confident in their ability to create representative and inclusive content, but only if provided with adequate tools and resources.’’

Of course, there will always be people who dislike seeing a more diverse setting, especially against the established order of Western ‘‘whiteness’’ ideologies. Ultimately, the best way to ensure diversity in these genres is to continue to create stories that feature diverse characters and cultures. If authors, producers, and casting directors make a conscious effort to create more imaginative stories that are inclusive and reflective of the real world, then audiences will be able to experience a more authentic and meaningful experience.

Isn’t it just so funny to see the treatment of Ollie from other drivers compared to how they treated Max at 17 years of age…like some of these older drivers literally bullied a 17-18 year old constantly in the media, let him be made into the bad guy and for what..
