Got myself an edition of Dracula I've wanted for a long time - the one illustrated by Becky Cloonan - so here are some of my favourite illustrations (in phone camera quality, with the kitchen tablecloth in the background, sorry):
Jonathan's first illustration, the Weird Sisters, GET SHOVEL'D IDIOT
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Captain (you've probably seen this one before)
Tumblr media
Basically every illustration featuring Renfield, they're so great. Good for him
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mina Harker, everybody (and YES she gets her canonical gun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our dear girls
Tumblr media
The "get a job! stay away from her!" illustrations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LUCY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack being a brooding emo prince (again, good for him)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and, in particular, this little illustration of his first meeting with Mina. My favourite 19th century tech nerds.
Tumblr media
The best couple in Gothic literature according to me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quincey looking almost exactly like his dark twin (Ethan Chandler in Penny Dreadful)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 'Avengers assemble" one
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(that's far from every illustration in the book, I simply didn't take pictures of every single one)

what i got from renfield (2023) was that robert had his bisexual awakening with dracula, and then proceeded to abandon his wife and child to go adventuring with a rich narcissist who gave him that good dick for mayhaps the first six month, but then eventually found himself stuck in an increasingly abusive and codependent relationship that he’s been secretly begging to get himself out of for decades, but hasn’t been able to until the support group and quincey came along bc he still feels guilty about abandoning his family for dracula in the first place.

Gotta love how the locals ALL react to Jonathan. They see him head to the wolf's jaws, one who is known for his taste for youth and go "oh that's a baby... I must give up my OWN good luck charm for this kid!"
Jonathan's whole beginning is such innocence facing its first big experience. Very first step out of the hearth.
It also juxtaposes with Jack, Quincey and Arthur, who are experienced men who have had many adventures overseas already!
Jonathan being a child in the eyes of the locals is something that has been discussed a lot, but I still feel for them. Because in a way, Jonathan is still a child, he is away from home, fresh from exams and with a fiancee, to have his first job in the field.
So the locals see this young man who doesn't even speak their language, but is polite, and has the kind of freshness that only inexperienced young people have in his eyes. They don't think much of it until he tells them (in broken german) where exactly he is going. Then, after Jonathan's revelation what the locals only see is a walking corpse, or worse another young soul trapped for eternity.
What the inkeepeer's wife sees is a lonely mother in a candle lit home, waiting and waiting for any kind of news of her son, looking at the window for hours so she doesn't miss the arrival of that young man she raised, and sent to a foreing land.
What the locals see is another victim. It seems that horrible being lost the fascination for the taste of their young (or has already devoured so many), and now he is bringing more innocent young people to his cursed tomb of a castle.
So they try, and try to keep that young man away, but he is a stubborn english man (it's his first job he can't mess it up).
They see the determination of his eyes (or desesperation and confusion), and let him go.
Maybe if they give him some protections he can put the clues together, and survive (it's impossible). Maybe if the coachman goes faster than that devil he can make the young man wait for tomorrow.
Compare Jonathan to these charming men, older than him, who had already seen so much more. The three of them have the kind of "mindset" that Jonathan lacks when it comes to danger. However, I think that even with all of their experience, none of them would have survived what Jonathan has been through in the course of these days.
I know it sounds unbelievable, or even cruel. Still, based on their characters, and the kind of masculine archetype that each of them represent, would Arthur, Quincey and Jack see through Dracula? Absolutely they aren't fools. Would they survive the kind of game that Dracula has been playing with Jonathan? I don't think so.

i am very proud of this. i had a lot of fun trying to find references for the clothes that were period-accurate and felt right for the characters. i looked up a height reference. i colored it, which i don't often do.
yeah i'm really proud of this.

We all rant on about how Quincey Morris gets unfairly shafted in Dracula adaptations, and rightfully so, but I have yet to see a single screen adaptation that includes Quincey Harker.

@re-dracula did a great job with the music in this episode. It helps lend gravity, and stress the tone, and most importantly... helps disguise how diddly darn long this monologue is
The written version would definitely give me trouble, with the lack of paragraph breaks, so the music definitely helps on account of General Trouble With Focus

As newly-qualified solicitor Marius Pontmercy travels to Romania to help a Count with his purchase of a home, his fiancée Cosette Fauchelevent heads over to Cette with their friends to prepare for their wedding. However, when Marius’ host begins to reveal sinister secrets, the couple and their friends must work together to save themselves and avenge those they have lost. Or; A Dracula AU, where Marius is Jonathan Harker and Cosette is Mina Murray.
A gift fic (with some doodles!) for @feathraly ((I really hope this is the right tumblr account...)) for the Discorinthe discord anniversary exchange! Their lovely lovely prompt WRT Marisette being a gothic couple, Jehan giving a bit of gothic horror as a treat, and some supernatural crossovers naturally lent themselves to me writing a Dracula AU with Marisette of course being the quintessential gothic power couple: The Harkers!
I hope feathraly enjoyed this fic!! <3 and if anyone else likes vampires, angst, and the Power of Friendship, this fic will probably be up your alley too! But please mind the tags!
P.S. No prior knowledge of Dracula is needed to read this fic! But if you are already familiar with Dracula, there is a whole bunch of new content in there too 👀

He flung his overcoat half out of the window to cover the armorial bearings upon the panel, but I had seen them in the glare of our fanlight none the less. I gasped with surprise. Then I turned back and ascended the stair to Holmes's room.
“I have found out who our client is,” I cried, bursting with my great news. “Why, Holmes, it is—”
“It is a loyal friend and a chivalrous gentleman,” said Holmes, holding up a restraining hand. “Let that now and forever be enough for us.”
I don’t know if we’re supposed to guess who the client is from this (royalty maybe?) but the fact this guy came in a carriage bedecked with the heraldry of someone who is trying to keep his identity secret??
Arthur Holmwood is that you

Between Quincey Morris being the first (apart from Van Helsing who is still keeping his suspicions about vampires to himself) to point out that it’s not a disease but something, or someone, taking out Lucy’s blood, and him using his skills of planning a hunt which we will observe in the later entries... listen, I just need everyone to bear in mind he’s not stupid. It’s very easy to write him off as someone whose only contribution is physical strength, but it’s not the case.

I love Dracula because it really shows that the age old tradition of giving men random but identifying nicknames when you’re just talking shit with the girlies™️ dates all the way back the Victorian era

okay so i got a bit hyped up about dracula this week. so now i have a playlist. and some of the songs are like, so perfect, to me, so i wanted to share some highlights.
"broken" by lovelytheband for jonmina. bc, yk. holiest love and all that. he'll follow her into hell. i love it.
"haiku" for by tally hall for jonathan bc i think him writing to mina is a bit of a love language.
"before the summer ends" from dracula: the musical. i didn't like the ending AT ALL lol (it also came way out of left field it seemed to me) but this song was a banger. he'll keep his word and then his heart will break.
"sweet but psycho" by ava max for vampire!lucy. listen i can see the animatic in my head
"team" by lorde. vibes right.
"good ol' fashion nightmare" by matt and kim. bc what is this novel except a good ol' fashion nightmare.
"soldier, poet, king" by the oh hellos. i think this could be about the suitors or just jonathan. i think generally it's used for sets of three, right? so for the suitors, i'd say quincey would be the soldier, jack the poet, arthur the king. but i also really like jonathan and i feel like he can fit all three roles. soldier, because he kills dracula; poet because of the diary; king because he's the protagonist. idk i just think it works.

Quincey Harker in canon ending timeline: "I sure am happy with my life and comfortable enough with myself, and being with my entire family and friends!"
*looming war horrors that will make him question if he wants to keep existing and return to his family as a monster*
*looming tragic romance like three of his namesakes had*
(the former is referring to some The Soldier and the Solicitor panels)
Yuuuuuuuuup
But there's still happiness and healing to be found on the otherside of the storm. Even if life doesn't work out or look the way you think/hope it will, there's still goodness to be found in it
