Got myself an edition of Dracula I've wanted for a long time - the one illustrated by Becky Cloonan - so here are some of my favourite illustrations (in phone camera quality, with the kitchen tablecloth in the background, sorry):
Jonathan's first illustration, the Weird Sisters, GET SHOVEL'D IDIOT
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Captain (you've probably seen this one before)
Tumblr media
Basically every illustration featuring Renfield, they're so great. Good for him
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mina Harker, everybody (and YES she gets her canonical gun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Our dear girls
Tumblr media
The "get a job! stay away from her!" illustrations
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
LUCY
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Jack being a brooding emo prince (again, good for him)...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
...and, in particular, this little illustration of his first meeting with Mina. My favourite 19th century tech nerds.
Tumblr media
The best couple in Gothic literature according to me:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Quincey looking almost exactly like his dark twin (Ethan Chandler in Penny Dreadful)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The 'Avengers assemble" one
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(that's far from every illustration in the book, I simply didn't take pictures of every single one)

Delighted that thanks to the wonderful @re-dracula we are finally experiencing Seward's phonograph diary the way it is in-universe - in audio format, as a sad man's sad private podcast.

Between Quincey Morris being the first (apart from Van Helsing who is still keeping his suspicions about vampires to himself) to point out that it’s not a disease but something, or someone, taking out Lucy’s blood, and him using his skills of planning a hunt which we will observe in the later entries... listen, I just need everyone to bear in mind he’s not stupid. It’s very easy to write him off as someone whose only contribution is physical strength, but it’s not the case.

Re: Dracula continues to be a delight. The sheer adoration in Mina's voice when she says "Lucy met me at the station, looking sweeter and lovelier than ever" <3 contrasted with the growing desperation in the captain's voice, oh man. Also, what a joy it was to listen to Mr. Swales. I mean, I didn't understand everything, but that is exactly the right way to bring this character to life.

Gotta love how Quincey’s appearance is never described (apart from him looking “so young and so fresh that it seems almost impossible that he has been to so many places and has had such adventures”), but thanks to, well, everything about him and the way other characters talk about him we all know in our hearts that however he might look like, he is hot

Man, Re: Dracula just keeps getting better and better. Happy Shovel Day indeed! I adored the song - the lyrics are great (the last verse, with "If you dare to still continue, there’ll be no place left to run" and so on kind of reminds me of A Series of Unfortunate Events theme song - look away, look away...), and I love the way it sounds. And the little after-credits scene was hilarious!

Hello! Do you happen to have a picture of the Harkers pressing their foreheads in the Becky Cloonan illustrated book? (I like that it seems she drew Jonathan's hair changing color)
Hi! Yeah, here it is:

the brides: beyond dracula
(or, a list for those who would like to see more of the weird sisters)
Tumblr media
🩸 A Dowry of Blood by S.T. Gibson - told from the perspective of Dracula’s first bride, Constanta, this is an alternate-universe story of the Brides through the ages, their relationship with Dracula becoming increasingly more abusive, and the three of them finally breaking free of this relationship. A slightly more detailed review here.
🩸 The Deathless Girls by Kiran Millwood Hargrave - a young adult prequel novel about the two dark-haired Brides, here reimagined as two Romani sisters. A slightly more detailed review here.
🩸 Dracula, Motherf**ker! by Alex de Campi and Erica Henderson - a very short graphic novel about the Brides and a crime scene photographer called Quincey Harker fighting Dracula in the 1974 Los Angeles. A more detailed review here.
🩸 Van Helsing (2004) - that one action movie where Van Helsing is an immortal monster hunter played by Hugh Jackman, and also Frankenstein’s monster is there. Love this movie or hate it, it can’t be denied that the Brides play quite a big role in it.
🩸 Bit (2019) - not a Dracula adaptation, but still a vampire movie that draws on the concept of the Brides of Dracula. The main character, Laurel (a trans woman played by a trans actress), moves to LA to her brother after graduating high school, is bitten by a pretty girl she meets at the club, and joins a vampire girl gang. The power dynamics in the group eventually lead to a confrontation complicated by the return of a powerful ancient vampire called ~Vlad~ (there’s a flashback sequence about him set to Rasputin by Boney M. If you even care).
🩸 The Invitation (2022) - if you don’t mind some randos (because the Harkers would never!) being given the names of the characters of Dracula, here’s a Gothic romance/horror movie about a young American woman Evie, who finds out she has relatives in England, accepts their invitation to a wedding, goes to England where a rich lord starts courting her, and then all hell breaks loose. This one goes the easy way of making Dracula young-looking and handsome, but I’d say he’s still scary enough, and if vampirism was taken away, this could still be a horror movie about fucked up rich people à la Ready or Not.
🩸 The Brides (2020) - before the pandemic, ABC was developing a TV series about the Brides in the modern world, starring Gina Torres as one of the three. Then COVID-19 happened, and the show got scrapped. Only the trailer remains. By the look of it, it would have been cheesy, but I still found it interesting to get a glimpse at what could have been.

The chronological order really drives it home how little time has passed between Mr. Hawkins appointing Jonathan his business partner and Mr. Hawkins dying. I wonder if he, like Lucy’s mother, was diagnosed with some terminal disease and hastened to settle his affairs as quickly as possible, to make sure that his firm stays in good hands and that Jonathan and Mina inherit his property.
(There is also, I guess, the crack theory that Jonathan and Mina murdered him for the inheritance. I mean, I saw someone on tumblr make a post about this before. That person seemed serious)

Minor spoilers, but: Lucy’s description of Dr. Seward only gets better/funnier after you get to his diary entries and find out how much of a mess this “one of the most resolute”, “the most calm”, “absolutely imperturbable” man actually is.

I like to explain Mina’s brevity in writing about Lucy’s death with her inability to write about it. It’s just too painful. It hurts, and she can’t make herself write about it at length, she just can’t.
If I was making a Dracula movie, I’d have her receive the telegram and read it while the voice of Van Helsing off-camera says the message. And the audience sees how her facial expression changes, how her hands start to shake, until she slowly collapses, sobbing, and a concerned Jonathan runs out of the next room to see what’s wrong. And she can only shove the telegram into his hands, because she can’t talk about it. She can’t say it out loud.

All I can say is that if you find it confusing that the main cast of Dracula includes a Jonathan and a John, maybe don’t read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, because its main cast includes a Jonathan and three Johns, and that’s not counting all the minor background Johns.
