in home when dean says “i carried you out the front door” sam says “ you did.” he looks at dean, and when he starts to give a common response “you did?”, it doesn’t come out as a question. instead it’s this realization, an of course you did. john was focused on mary, and dean was focused on sam. john spent the rest of his life in that burning house. dean carried sam out.
sam doesn’t question dean at all, even though asking something like “really?” is a normal response to being told something you didn’t know. he agrees, because the logic of his four year old brother carrying him out of a burning house makes perfect sense to him. he would’ve been more shocked if dean had said that john carried him out. and then dean says “you never knew that?” not “i didn’t tell you that?” as if he genuinely forgets that they don’t share one brain and all his memories aren’t burned into sam’s prefrontal cortex.

Yes, I will stay here for awhile For I need a break A break from the pressures of life And everything that lays in the palms of life's hands
He may have hit his grow spurt but he's still Dean's baby.

Part 2 Eddie’s POV | Part 1 (Steve's POV here)| Part 3 Part 4
Eddie was just trying to get out of the trailer and find some place to smoke, so Wayne wouldn't give him a hard time. He definitely did not plan on running into a crying Steve Harrington. Steve was a freshman, but he was already so popular. He was one of the jocks, so Eddie kind of assumed he was an asshole, a cute asshole, but an asshole nevertheless.
It's for this reason that he doesn't know what comes over him, what compels him to stop and ask if he is okay. Maybe it was because Steve looked so small. Maybe it was because Eddie was familiar with the look of pain in his face, feels it to his core when he sees the bruise on Steve’s face.
And to his surprise, Steve opens up to him. He tells Eddie he does not think he is alright. Eddie knows he can use this information to knock Steve down and ruin his reputation at school, but looking at him, he can't. So he sits down next to him, lets him talk about his family and the loneliness and pain, and Eddie feels some sort of kinship with him. Eddie opens up too, talks about his parents, and says how Wayne took him in.
And they talk about other things too. He notices how Steve smiles and listens as he rambles on about Dungeons and Dragons. They talk for hours, and regardless of how weird or different his tastes are, Steve never seems fazed by it. He listens as Steve passionately defends Rick Springfield. And he feels his cheeks go red when Steve suddenly stops, gets nervous, says his name. "Hey Eds..."
"Yeah, Stevie?" The name slips out but Steve doesn't appear bothered. In fact, Steve seems to be blushing, and Eddie tries not to read into that. He waits for Steve to repond.
"If this is out of line or something, please tell me, and we can pretend it never happened, but umm..." Steve starts anxiously, and despite Eddie's own building anxiety, he tries to lighten the mood, get Steve to relax.
So Eddie smiles at him, laughing gently to hide his own nerves. "I thought you popular kids didn't get anxious." He jokes."Unless there was some hot girl or something." He isn't sure why he said that, maybe to get the confirmation from Steve that, yes, he does in fact like girls, and this growing feeling in Eddie's chest over the last few hours needs to be quelled. Steve Harrington can't like boys, and definitely can't like boys like him.
But then Steve surprised Eddie. "I mean... what if it was like a hot guy?" Steve quickly asks like he could not get the words out fast enough. Eddie doesn't hear the breath get caught in Steve's throat over the increasing sound of his own heartbeat in his ears. Steve Harrington just came out to him , and he is in disbelief. And he is suddenly more hopeful. After a few seconds, it hits him that he has not replied, that Steve is waiting.
He finally says, "I mean...if you're asking if I'd be okay with you thinking a guy is hot, I would be." Eddie pauses, but wants to say more, but he is terrified to make the first move...to be the one who crossed the line. Afterall Steve was high school royalty, and he is just some freak. But suddenly, he feels Steve's hand in his, resting both of their hands in Eddie’s lap. Eddie hopes Steve doesn't realize how clammy his palms are.
"What if... you were that hot guy?" Steve whispers, both of them staring face to face now. Eddie can't help but smile, blush covering his face. "I'd be okay with that too..."
And Steve just leans over and kisses him, gentle hands on his face, soft lips against his. And Eddie kisses back, and its magical, better than he ever dreamed his first kiss would be.
The next couple of months are great. At school they keep their distance. He tells Steve it's because it is better for both of them because people can be mean to a couple of queer boys. And mostly that is true but he also doesn't want to ruin either of their reputations. Their respective friend groups would have a field day with the jock and the freak being together. So only Wayne knows.
But alone that can just be Steve and Eddie; happy. When they sleep together for the first time, Eddie can't believe how in love he is with Steve. And as he held Steve against his chest, petting his hair, Steve says it, tells him "I love you, Eds..."
And he doesn't have to think, he just says it back. Because he did love Steve Harrington.
A few days later, though, everything comes crashing down. He had been with his friends. They had been talking shit about some of the assholes at school, mostly jocks.
One of them mentions Steve, suddenly peaking Eddie’s interest. "I thought Harrington stays out of it, doesn't he?" Eddie says, trying to play it cool.
"Yea, he doesn't say much but you know it's just because he thinks he is better than everyone." Eddie’s friend laughs.
"What do you mean?" Eddie says, trying not to sound defensive.
"You know, Steve "the hair" Harrington, is just a spoiled rich kid. Honestly, I feel bad for that dudes friends. He probably uses them to feel good and gets rid of them when he gets bored. I know he just a freshman, but you can just tell he's a jerk."
"I don't think he is that bad. " Eddie says weakly, thinking back to Steve laying on his chest a few nights prior. "He's always been nice to me."
"Eddie, guys like that are great at pretending. But he hangs out with the people that make our lives nightmares. All the jocks are the same. "
"Oh..." Eddie replies, not sure what to say.
His friend adds, "I feel bad for all those girls that flirt with him, if he ever actually dates one, he is going to lead them on until he gets bored of them. And dump them. " He laughs and moves on. But Eddie can't stop thinking about the conversation.
His friends were right. Steve was a jock, a popular kid, a rich kid. He didn't really love Eddie...he couldn't. He stews in this, convinces himself that Steve will break his heart. And he can't handle that. He needs to cut it off first.
So he doesn't show up to Steve's game, and when Steve shows up at the trailer, he makes Wayne send him away. Wayne looks at him, disappointed, when he shuts the door. "Eddie, you should talk to him, call the boy ."
"No Wayne." He says before locking himself in his room, spending the weekend trying to forget about Steve.
At school on Monday he tries to avoid Steve, but the other boy finally tracks him down in the bathroom. He tries to block out the memory of their conversation but can remember clearly the look on Steve’s face right before he walked away. Eddie had broken Steve’s heart.
Afterwards, Eddie lets himself believe he was right to end it with Steve as he watches Steve hook up with girl after girl. He lets himself think he would have been just a number for Steve. He even silently is happy when he seen Nancy Wheeler left him. He forces himself to see Steve as a caricature of a man, just King Steve. Not the sweet, bitchy, soft, tough complex person he knew Steve to be.
Because Eddie, due to some weird high school hubris, couldn't let himself believe he was wrong. That Steve Harrington loved him.
And then he ends up becoming friends with Steve’s little group of kids he babysat. And he hated that Dustin would constantly talk about Steve, because it was more proof that he was an idiot and he let a good thing go. No, he didn't just let him go, he crushed him, broke him. Steve trusted Eddie with his heart and Eddie dropped it. He tries not think about it, even as he stares out the window whenever Steve would drop the kids off or pick them up. He ruined everything and he can't turn back time.
But then Spring Break happens, and he was forced to face Steve again. And it's hard and awkward. He knows Steve does it on purpose when he throws his shirt at Eddie. He knows it is too late for him and Steve. But part of him wants Steve to be happy, especially seeing how good Steve still is. He tries to fix things between Steve and Nancy. Steve doesn’t seem receptive of it. Then Steve saves him, runs out of the Upside-Down, carrying his body.
Steve stays with him in the hospital and volunteers to help him at home. Wayne was appreciative about that. Eddie assumes they are never going to bring it up, ignore the past. But Steve has other ideas. Eddie is left dumbstruck when Steve asks one day when they are alone, "Are we going to talk about it?"

Loose Lips Sink Ships - Part 1
Dean Winchester x GN S/O
AN: Hey guys! I know that I disappeared for a bit, but I promise that I'm still alive and kicking! I've just been really consumed by the SoapGhost fics that I've been writing/planning for ao3 and that made it hard for me to find time to write for Tumblr in between irl things when all of my free time seemed to be dedicated to COD. But I finally decided to just sit down and work on one of my numerous WIP's which led to me cranking this bad boy out! Hope you like it!
Word Count: 2,118
Tumblr media
You moved your hands out of your jacket pocket, revealing your well-loved wallet that you’d had for years, and pulled the card with your current alias printed onto it out of its assigned slot in a practiced motion.
You tapped the chip against the screen of the card reader in order to pay for the obscenely greasy food that you’d ordered for yourself and Dean –who you had left fast asleep in your shared motel room– watching with a keen eye as the payment processed and then was accepted with a little innocuous green check mark, the receipt printing with a soft whir.
You startled a little as a phone suddenly began to ring, the tune echoing loudly in the store, and it took you an embarrassing amount of time to realize that it was actually your cell that was going off, your free hand –which wasn’t currently juggling both your card and wallet– darted down to the back pocket of your jeans in order to collect the device with a sheepish smile.
You swiped your thumb across the screen and answered the phone without looking at the caller ID, quickly wedging the device between your ear and shoulder in order to take the receipt that the bored looking cashier was impatiently holding out toward you with your newly freed hand.
“Hey, where the hell did you run off to?” Dean was already talking before you could even manage to get a greeting out, his voice rough in a way that it only was immediately after waking up, which told you that he most likely called after rousing from sleep and noticing that you were no longer in the motel with him.
“Just figured that I’d treat your lazy ass to some breakfast since you didn’t look like you were getting up anytime soon.” You said as you took the long strip of paper from the cashier with a small nod of thanks before stepping off to the side in order to make way for the next customer to step forward and be assisted, folding up the receipt and carelessly cramming it into your wallet before shoving it back into your jeans.
You had wanted to let Dean sleep in for once since it was technically your fault that you were both up so late last night, the two of you having been all wound up after running around all day asking anyone and everyone about the suspicious deaths that had been happening around town only to come up with fuck all, so you and Dean had decided to dispel all that pent up energy and frustration by testing Dean’s so-called ‘endless stamina’ that he constantly bragged about.
Needless to say, you had put him through the wringer and managed to come out the other side a little less worse for wear than Dean had.
You settled in with your phone now comfortably resting against the side of your head as you waited for your order to be called, and you bit your lip in an attempt to repress the love-sick smile that wanted to overtake your neutral expression when you heard the telltale shift of blankets over the line.
You could see Dean carelessly sprawl his limbs out across the bed in your mind's eye, your fingers twitching with the urge to brush your fingers through his –no doubt– adorable bedhead, the impulse always bubbling up without fail when you saw his hair sticking up at all sorts of odd angles.
“Rough night?” You asked, your voice practically dripping with faux-concern as you idly watched the people milling about the pop fountain, and Dean let loose a distinctly unattractive snort that had a smug grin spreading across your lips, your salacious smile earning you a dirty look from a woman who had just finished filling a large cup with cola that you unfortunately just so happened to make eye contact with.
“You’d know.” Dean groused, the sound of him moving about restlessly nearly drowning out his petulant response as he heaved himself upright with a groan that had him sounding like he was an old man rather than a spry twenty-six year old, and you winced in sympathy.
As hunters, your line of work was unforgiving and you yourself were subject to the various aches and pains that came from such a physically demanding job on more than one occasion.
“You order yet?” Dean asked suddenly and you blinked rapidly, his voice abruptly pulling you from the aimless staring that you’d been unknowingly doing as you recalled how stiff and sore you were when you woke up this morning. Though, if you were being honest with yourself, that was definitely a byproduct of last night's rigorous activities rather than having to fight for your life against some bloodthirsty creature or another for once, which was admittedly a nice change of pace.
“Yup. Got you a bacon breakfast burrito, hash browns, and a slice of cherry pie.” You replied with a wide grin, a bark of laughter erupting from your chest and startling the few people standing near you when Dean let out a truly sinful moan of appreciation.
“I love you so fucking much.” Dean declared, the mattress springs creaking as he pushed to his feet and walked across the small room before clicking on a lightswitch, his voice taking on a distinct echo as he entered the borderline claustrophobic motel bathroom.
“I know.” You said smugly before suddenly remembering the woman that you had run into on your way to the restaurant, causing you to be out longer than you’d originally intended, which was the whole reason why you were back with breakfast before Dean woke up.
“Also, while I was out, I happened to run into a friend of the ex-wife of the last victim and I may have found a lead on this case.” You stated after briefly glancing around and taking a couple of steps back in order to make sure that no one would be overhearing your conversation.
The most that you’d been able to get out of the shell-shocked woman when you and Dean had went to interrogate her the previous day was that her ex-husband had broken into the house while she was home alone and, after saying some shit that made no sense at all whatsoever, had dropped dead right there in the dining room before she could even process what had happened.
And that wasn’t even the weirdest thing that had happened, the person before that had slumped over dead in a church confessional booth after saying about three words to the priest and the one before that had just randomly collapsed to the ground in the middle of a crosswalk after angrily yelling at a reckless driver that had almost ran her over.
“Alright, hit me.” Dean said, sounding much more awake now but, before you could say a word, one of the employees called out your order number over the general chatter of the restaurant. You snapped to attention, muttering a quick warning to Dean that the food was done and you were gonna go grab it, before moving forward and maneuvering your way through the small crowd that had accumulated between you and the front desk.
You took the grease-stained brown paper bag with a grateful smile and a polite nod before turning on your heel in order to make your way over to the exit. You shamelessly used your foot to bully the door open –since your hands were full– before stepping outside and squinting when the sun made your eyes ache, unused to the intense brightness after having spent so much time under the fluorescent lights that they had installed indoors.
“As I was saying, apparently there’s an old legend–” You began as you trotted over to the nearby sidewalk in order to begin the long walk back to the motel, only to be almost immediately interrupted by Dean.
“There always is.” Dean muttered to himself through a muffled yawn, but you expertly ignored him –a talent that had been born from being around the older Winchester for several years– and continued on as if he had never even uttered a word.
“–that a witch used to terrorize the area way back when this place used to be just a tiny trading town and, considering that there is definitely some kind of curse involved here, I figured that a witch –if not the very same witch from the story– is most likely our culprit rather than a cursed object, like we initially suspected.” You continued explaining your findings, lifting a hand to wave at the driver of a pick up that had slowed to a stop and motioned to the street in front of them, allowing you to quickly jog across the crosswalk.
“Fucking witches man.” Dean growled, the deep sound sending the wrong kind of signals to your brain and making your core heat up in anticipation as images of last night came to the forefront of your mind, an overwhelming sense of smug satisfaction blooming in your chest when you recalled the plethora of possessive marks that you’d shamelessly left all over his body.
The deafening blare of a car horn unceremoniously yanked you from your internal musings and you gave Dean a noncommital hum as your gaze scanned over the street in an effort to find the origin of the noise, pausing your search and freezing mid step when you noticed a man and a woman standing stock still on the other side of the busy road, both of them just staring at you as passersby gave them a wide berth.
“Hello? You still there?” You heard Dean’s voice as he called out over the phone, but your attention was firmly locked onto the pair on the opposite sidewalk who were very openly watching you with an intensity that made your gut churn, your eyes widening when you made the mistake of making eye contact with the woman and she shot you a mean grin.
“Uh, yeah. It’s just– There’s a man and a woman staring at me… and I have a feeling that they’re not coming over here for a friendly chat.” You relayed warily as the two finally moved, the woman taking the lead as they stepped off the curb and began making their way across the road toward you.
And, no sooner than the words had left your mouth, you heard the telltale sound of Dean grabbing his keys and jacket before the rhythmic thump of rapid footsteps and the heavy slam of a door signaled his rushed exit from the motel room, the relative silence of the room being replaced by the whistle of the wind and general bustle of the city as Dean climbed into the Impala.
“Don’t hang up and don’t move, I’m coming to you.” Dean snapped furiously –though you didn’t take his harsh tone to heart since you knew that he was just worried– and you winced when you heard the deafening squeal of tires on asphalt from Dean’s end of the line, the commotion promptly being followed by a flurry of irritated honking as he drove like a mad man.
“The not moving thing probably won’t be an option, but you can access my location from your own phone and use that to track my movements. I’ll keep the call connected if I can.” You said quickly before acting as if you dropped the call and stashing your cell into the right pocket of your jacket moments before the woman came to a halt about a foot away from you, her companion not too far behind.
“Hello. You’ll have to forgive my rudeness, it’s been awhile since I’ve come across a hunter. Especially one who is brave or stupid enough to travel with someone as infamous and recognizable as a Winchester.” The woman –who you assumed was in charge– greeted with faux-remorse, and you swallowed nervously as her red lips stretched into a wide smile that showed off too many teeth to be strictly friendly.
You scrambled for something to focus on as you began to panic at the realization that the mystery woman –who you strongly suspected was the very witch that you’d been looking for– not only knew who you were but also why you were there, your brain stupidly choosing to latch onto the fact that the pair were going to cause you to be delayed even longer, which meant that it was becoming more than likely that your food was going to be stone cold by the time you made it back to the motel.
If you managed to come out of the confrontation alive, that is.

The War of the Ninepenny Kings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"So they called it, though I never saw a king, nor earned a penny. It was a war, though. That it was."
Another little Golden Company diorama! The Ninepenny Kings is an interesting conflict in the story - we already have the Great Offscreen War trope covered by Robert's Rebellion, and then Ninepenny Kings is the greater, offscreener, war. I always thought it's analogue was WW2, or at least the popular perception of it, as "the last great war" where the Westerosi greatest generation were united against an obvious Other (no pun intended).
The centrepiece is Barristan leading his triumphant charge against Maelys. Even though its described as very much a lone charge, I thought it would be fun to include some notables - Lord Reyne, the Red Lion, and a young Blackfish. I had a devil of a time with all three actually - Lord Reyne was going to be Tywin, I'd started the Blackfish as, well, black, until I realised this was before he took that title, and only after finishing Barristan I realised he wasn't yet a Kingsguard.
On the opposing side we have Myles Toyne as Maelys' bannerman, and a cool Dothraki looking guy. Steve Dothraki.
The basing was largely inspired by HotD's portrayal of the stepstones, I loved that brutal messy drawn-out slog through the sand.

samdean having the same blood type is so important to me like icb we never saw them giving each other blood transfusions.
it would’ve been john’s idea at first… sam gets a serious injury on one of his first hunts and he’s losing blood but they’re in the woods and john— calm, ignoring the obvious horror and self-blame on dean’s face— orders dean to the car, go get the first aid kit. dean’s out of breath when he gets back, silently taking over putting pressure on sam’s wound, entire focus on keeping him awake, you’re okay sammy, just look at me. he barely takes notice of john until he’s pulling dean’s left hand off sam, pushing up his sleeve. dean doesn’t even glance at him until he feels something stick in his forearm. that’s when he looks, seeing plastic tubing and needles. he makes brief eye contact with his father, understanding despite never going to a doctor before, and turns back to sam. sam barely reacts to the needle in his arm, just a weak flutter of eyelids, and dean sits there in shock until john smacks him on the side of the head, ordering him to stand up. dean obeys, already a good soldier at 17. he stands over sam like a guardian angel, watching his blood travel down the tube into sam’s veins as john sews the hole in his abdomen shut.
john knows from looking at him that he must be lightheaded, but dean still insists on helping sammy back to the car, sticking close to him like he’ll die if he lets go.
both boys in the backseat, pale from blood loss, but alive. sam’s head is on dean’s shoulder, and deans arm is around him, blood-stained fingers dragging up and down his arm slowly, soothing.
john doesn’t even argue about them sharing a bed that night; he’s too tired. dean refuses to leave sam’s side for a moment, washing the blood and grime off sam’s face, hands and stomach without doing the same for himself. they fall asleep with sam’s face almost against dean’s chest and dean’s arms tight around him, feeling him breathing.
once they know they can, they do it a lot. dean offering when it’s really not necessary, and sam letting him, both pretending they don’t just enjoy sharing everything about themselves.
and Maybe when they get a drop of blood on their hands they just lick it off instead of dirtying their clothes and Maybe that’s where sam got his taste for blood from but who am i to say

yeah she smokes and what about it
Dean huffs out the smoke from the drag of her cigarette, leaning her head back against the brick wall of the latest motel the Winchester family is holed up in. There’s a vending machine next to her, the glass is shattered but a few sodas remain, she makes a mental note to grab one for Sammy before she goes inside, he’ll appreciate it.
She still can’t get her legs to move even with the thought of her brother patiently awaiting her return. It’s been three, maybe four, hours of him being alone in that drafty room that has to be near frigid with the brisk September air setting in quicker than most years. John won’t be back for a few more days, Dean helped try to track the werewolf he’s hunting the best she could, the scrapes on her hands and aching bones prove it. It didn’t make a damn of a difference, John’s no close to catching the thing and now Dean has to muster up a dinner for Sam in her exhausted state. She was really betting on John taking them for takeout on their next drive to a new town, that won’t be happening for at least a week more now. Great.
She flicks the cigarette butt to the ground and stomps it out with her blood stained boot. Dean takes a breath through her nose, releasing it open mouthed, mentally preparing herself to play mom for a few hours til Sammy falls asleep. Maybe she can sneak off to a local bar after that.

Sarai is the first person to ever see him hold a sword.
Soren is loitering in the courtyard after crownguard practices, and Sarai is prone to sparring with the soldiers, as their new captain. She’s only been here for six months since Captain Amaya became General Amaya and left for a stint at the Breach, and Soren finally feels well enough that he can lift one of the practice wooden swords left lying around.
He swings it a few times, adjusting his grip experimentally - imagines himself as a brave, powerful hero instead of a recovering, sickly boy - and grins triumphantly as he follows through. He then accordingly almost topples over from going too far, and actually does drop the sword when he hears, “A warrior, are you?” and nearly shrieks.
Captain Sarai stands behind him, hands on her hips and a teasing smirk on her lips. His ears burn.
“I’d like to be,” he says petulantly, scooping the sword up and then holding it out to her.
She bats his hand away. “Adjust your grip,” she says, drawing her own sword and carefully laying her hand over the hilt. “Like this.”
Soren does his best to follow. “Uh, why?”
“Your sword is ideally going to make contact with something solid. You don’t want your wrist to be flimsy and break.” She rests her sword by her side, one arm crossed over her stomach. “Now show me your fighting stance.”
Soren does, Captain Sarai’s smile softening, directing him over to one of the dummies.
“Alright, now swing your sword. Aim true,” she tells him. “You can’t take back the strike of a sword. Every hit has to matter.”
Aim true, Soren thinks. He swings.
Two years later, Queen Sarai dies saving his father.
He gives Callum a bit of leeway, because the kid just lost his mother, but Soren can’t hold out forever, because he’s lost his mother and his teacher, and, well... Callum would never be a warrior like them. It’s an easy thing to pick on.
Nine years after that, Soren stands in the shadow of the Storm Spire, his sword held aloft with shaking hands. Another one of her sons is here, helpless, and poised on the precipice of a coward’s blade, the end of the staff sharp enough to puncture even if that wasn’t its intended purpose (or maybe it was).
“And I will do whatever it takes to protect his life!” Soren spits, dust in his eyes. This is the hardest thing he’s ever had to do. “Do you hear me?”
Sarai’s voice echoes in his head. Aim true.
Soren goes for the heart. His own falls out in his hands as his father drops to the ground, and Soren succumbs to his knees.
He hopes Sarai and Claudia can forgive him, someday.

Part 1: Steve's POV | Part 2 (Eddie's POV here) | Part 3 | Part 4
Everyone thinks Nancy was Steve's first love, but he had been in love before her. But he can't talk about it, not even with Robin. Doing so would out someone... and he just can't do that, even if the person broke his heart, stepped on it, and smashed it into a million pieces.
When he was a freshman, he had found himself in the woods, trying to be alone, trying to get a way from an angry father and apathetic mother. He doesn't even remember what the fight was about, just that his parents were home and he had a big bruise covering his eye. He would play it off in school tomorrow, not that the popular kids he was falling in with would even care. But right now he needed to clear his head, to be angry, to cry.
He had been sitting alone in some little clearing wrapped up in his own feelings, so much so, he nearly jumped out of his skin when he heard a voice proving that he was not alone.
"Harrington?" He knows the voice, Eddie Munson. He was a sophomore at Steve's school, and though he never talked him, he knew of him. He was loud and weird and knew how to draw attention to himself. The other jocks Steve hung out with would make jokes at his expense, and Eddie would give it right back. And Steve kind of loves that. In fact, though, he would never admit it, he thought the upperclassmen was cute, and funny, and charming, and, okay, maybe he had a crush on him. But right now, crying in the woods alone was the last place he wanted to see Eddie. He knew Eddie and his friends hated jocks, not that he could blame them. But he knows this is going to be humiliating. So he clears his throat the best he can, trying to mask the sadness in his tear stained face. He grumbles, "What?"
Eddie threw his hands up defensively. "Don't worry, I'm not here to start anything. I was just walking and heard you. Just want to make sure you're okay, man. You look rough." He says softly, no hint of sarcasm in his voice. He steps closer.
Steve doesn’t know why, but he suddenly feels less tense. Maybe because this is the first person who ever asked Steve that. People always assume that Steve, son of the wealthiest people in Hawkins, must be doing okay. Rich kids don't have anything to complain about. But here Eddie was asking him if he was alright. And maybe he is desperate for someone to care, to ask, to want to know. So despite himself, he looks up and meets Eddie’s eyes, and he whispers. "No, I'm not doing alright."
Steve doesn’t know what to expect after that confession came out of his mouth, never admitting he was anything but perfect before. Maybe he expected Eddie to awkwardly leave, unsure what to do when some other kid just says that to you. Or maybe Eddie would laugh, tell people at school that he was some pansy, crying alone in the woods. But neither of those things happen. Instead, Eddie sits down next to him, joining him on the floor of dead leaves and dirt. Steve looks at him, unsure what to say, and Eddie just... smiles sympathetically at him. "You wanna talk about it?"
And Steve wants to say no, but he doesn’t. Instead, he finds himself trauma dumping on some poor kid, who, despite Steve's crush, doesn't actually know him. And Eddie listens. He listens as Steve talks about the abuse and neglect and loneliness. And to his surprise, Eddie can relate to having a bad dad, and a mom who wasn't there. Eddie really listens, and for the first time in Steve’s life, he feels seen.
And after a while, the conversation gets lighter. Steve finds he likes talking to Eddie. Eddie tells him about this weird game he plays. Steve tries to understand but more enjoys how expressive and happy Eddie looks as he talks. They talk for hours in this little clearing, in their own little world. They talk about music, and movies, and things they like to do. And even if their tastes are different, Steve feels this connection to Eddie.
And maybe he is wrong, but he thinks Eddie feels the same thing. He would usually never risk this, risk anyone finding out he secretly likes more than girls, that he likes boys too, but the way Eddie has been talking, and staring at him and watching him, he feels like it will be okay. So he risks it. "Hey, Eddie?" His voice is much shyer then it had been moments prior when he was passionately defending Rick Springfield supremacy over Black Sabbath.
"Yea, Stevie?" Steve can't help but blush at the little nickname
"If this is out of line or something, please tell me and we can pretend it never happened, but umm..." Steve starts anxiously.
Eddie smiles at him, laughing gently as Steve squirms. "I thought you popular kids didn't get anxious." He jokes "Unless there was some hot girl or something." He adds trying to lighten the mood.
"I mean... what if it was like a hot guy?" Steve quickly asks before he loses the nerve. He feels his breath caught in his chest waiting for Eddie to respond.
A beat passes. Then two. Steve feels embarrassment creeping in, worried he has just messed up this brand new friendship.
Finally, Eddie responds. "I mean...if you're asking if I'd be okay with you thinking a guy is hot, I would be." Eddie pauses, but the look on his face tells Steve there is more he wants to say. So, against his better judgment, Steve reaches over and takes Eddie’s hand, letting them both rest in Eddie’s lap. What leaves Steve's mouth next surprises both of them.
"What if...you were that hot guy?" Steve whispers, both of them staring face to face now. And Steve watches as a tiny smile forms on Eddie’s mouth, a light pink blush on his cheeks.
"I'd be okay with that too..."
The next thing Steve knows, he finds himself leaning in, and he kisses Eddie Munson. And Eddie kisses back. Steve later finds out it was Eddie’s first kiss, and somehow that makes him treasure the moment more. And when they are done, neither freak out, they just sit together in the dusk light, happy and content.
Over the next few months, they spend so much time together. They keep it a secret from everyone but Wayne. Kids could be mean to two queer kids, so Eddie tells him it's better this way. But when they were alone in the woods or Eddie’s trailer, or the empty Harrington Manson, they could be themselves, they could be happy.
They would talk and kiss and just be in love. After months together, they were even each other’s first time. And it was clumsy and awkward and beautiful. Afterwards, as Steve laid on Eddie’s chest, he whispers "Love you, Eds..."
And without hesitatation, Eddie replies "Love you, too, Stevie." And in that moment, Steve feels like everything is perfect.
Unfortunately, a few days later, that all comes crashing down. Steve had a big baseball game. He was the only freshman on the varsity team. He asked Eddie to come, and he agreed. And Steve was so excited to have his boyfriend come and cheer him on.
But the day comes, and Eddie is not there. Steve assumes the worst because Eddie would never blow him off. So, instead of going to celebrate with the other guys, he excuses himself and heads to the Munson trailer. When he shows up, though, Wayne answers the door. Wayne looks sad as he gently says, "I'm sorry, son. Eddie doesn't want to see you."
The words hurt, but Steve doesn't argue. He pushes down a lump in his throat as he chokes out. "Oh... okay. Can you have him call me later?"
Wayne half-heartedly agrees before shutting the door. Steve races home on his bike, just in case Eddie calls. But he doesn’t. Steve waits all night, falling asleep with bloodshot, tear filled eyes near the phone. Eddie also doesn't call all weekend, and no one answers at the Munson's residence.
On Monday, Steve tries to catch his attention in the halls, but Eddie keeps looking away, avoiding him. Steve finally catches Eddie alone in the boy's bathroom. "Eddie? What happened?"
Eddie focuses on his hands in the sink, not looking up to face Steve. "Go away, Steve. "
Steve lets out a wounded sound as he chokes, "Eds? What did I do? Whatever it is, I'll fix it."
Eddie takes a shaky breath in and says "You can't because no matter what, I'll be a freak, and you are just some jock. This entire thing we had going on was bullshit. You don't love me and I can't love you..."
Suddenly, it all clicks, Steve went too far. He should have never told Eddie he loves him. Eddie was just being nice saying it back. Maybe he was too clingy, and he ruined everything. So he doesn't say anything. He just turns and walks away, desperately holding back tears until he gets out of school, skipping the rest of the day.
He tries to forget Eddie. He leans into being popular, a ladies man. They don't talk. And maybe its not cool, but though he never bullies Eddie, he does not stop his friends from doing it. He knows Eddie can handle himself. He dates strings of girls, hoping someone will love him the same that he loves them. He thought he found that with Nancy, but soon he realized that his love was bullshit to her too. And it killed him.
After high-school, it hurt him to find out his kids, his little brother, fell in with Eddie. He played it off by being a jerk, calling Eddie a freak. But honestly, he was mad that the person he loved... and part of him still loves, the person who destroyed him gets to share some of his favorite people. It did not feel fair.
But then Spring break happened, and Vecna and he had to be face to face with Eddie for the first time since that day in the bathroom, and it brought back every emotion, good and bad. And then he saved Eddie, carried him out of the Upside-Down. He stayed by his side in the hospital room, and helped him when he was finally sent home a month later. And one day, two months after everything went down, when they were alone in Eddie's trailer(Steve often helped Eddie get around as he healed when Wayne was at work), Steve asked, "Are we going to talk about it?"
