"Magnificence, the people of Meereen have come to celebrate our union. You heard them cheering you. Do not cast away their love." "It was my floppy ears they cheered, not me. Take me from this abbatoir, husband." She could hear the boar snorting, the shouts of the spearmen, the crack of the pitmaster's whip. "Sweet lady, no. Stay only a while longer. For the folly, and one last match. Close your eyes, no one will see. They will be watching Belaquo and Ghogor. This is no time for--" A shadow rippled across his face.
#danyweek2023 day 3 prompt: badass moments - dany taking off her veil and tokar, ready to leave the fighting pits just as drogon finally returns (featuring irri and jhiqui discussing the matches, and belwas being queasy from the locusts). shadow-free version:

Barristan Selmy had known many kings. He had been born during the troubled reign of Aegon the Unlikely, beloved by the common folk, had received his knighthood at his hands. Aegon's son Jaehaerys had bestowed the white cloak on him when he was three-and-twenty, after he slew Maelys the Monstrous during the War of the Ninepenny Kings. In that same cloak he had stood beside the Iron Throne as madness consumed Jaehaerys's son Aerys. Stood, and saw, and heard, and yet did nothing.
But no. That was not fair. He did his duty. Some nights, Ser Barristan wondered if he had not done that duty too well.

"Better to come a beggar than a slaver", Arstan said.
"There speaks one who has been neither".
ASOS, DAENERYS II
I've seen antis speculating that this exchange of words between Dany and ser Barristan (Arstan) means to foreshadow that she will eventually end up as a slaver.
Which is a ridiculous take considering that Dany is the most anti - slavery character among all the asoiaf pov ones. Which character has done more than Dany to abolish slavery ? At the end of the arc this conversation takes place she frees the Unsullied.
Imo, it's obvious that this conversation indicates that unlike Ser Barristan and most other characters Dany has been both a beggar and a slave in her life and therefore can understand both hardships better.

I love barristan selmy he’s so knightpilled like each pov chapter he gets kind of close to Getting It and coming to terms with the violence he was complicit in as kingsguard to past kings and then he snatches his hand away from the hot stovetop of accepting and goes well better go teach these boys to not break the cycle with me
Like of course he’s never going to tell dany about aerys assaulting her mother and burning people alive and rhaegar kidnapping a teenager and being responsible for the chaos and death of her house
The oaths of knighthood and the oaths of the kingsguard are not compatible when the king you swear to isn’t upholding the idealized vision of kinghood!!

What's crazy is that Barristan has the character development that people pretend Jaime has but because he supports Dany and doesn't spend all of his page time talking/thinking about how evil Targaryens are, it gets ignored

have always suspected that the same crowd of middle aged tywin and stannis are political and military geniuses fans are the ones who think barristan selmy is the truest kingsguard and most honourable and purely good knight ever and not only are they wrong it’s fucked discourse around the kingsguard. the kingsguard is not a group of honourable knights with one or two bad apples it is an evil organisation it is the state-sanctioned violence arm of the horrors of monarchy !! you can try to be nice in the kg but they exist to enable the king to do whatever he wants whether the king is good or evil (invariably evil) a good kingsguard cannot be a good person

Barristan 🤝 the slaves 🤝 Daenerys breaking the slavers' peace
"Your gods are far away, Ser Grandfather," said the Widower. "I do not think they hear your prayers. And when the Yunkai'i send back the old woman to spit in your eye, what then?"
"Fire and blood," said Barristan Selmy, softly, softly.
For a long moment no one spoke. Then Strong Belwas slapped his belly and said, "Better than liver and onions," and Skahaz Shavepate stared through the eyes of his wolf's head mask and said, "You would break King Hizdahr's peace, old man?"
"I would shatter it." (ADWD, The Queen's Hand)
~
Daenerys Targaryen was wed, the guards on the pens had told them, laughing. She had taken a Meereenese slaver as her king, as wealthy as he was noble, and when the peace was signed and sealed the fighting pits of Meereen would open once again. Other slaves insisted that the guards were lying, that Daenerys Targaryen would never make peace with slavers. Mhysa, they called her. Someone told him that meant Mother. Soon the silver queen would come forth from her city, smash the Yunkai'i, and break their chains, they whispered to one another. (ADWD, Tyrion X)
~
"It is such a long way," she complained. "I was tired, Jorah. I was weary of war. I wanted to rest, to laugh, to plant trees and see them grow. I am only a young girl."
No. You are the blood of the dragon. The whispering was growing fainter, as if Ser Jorah were falling farther behind. Dragons plant no trees. Remember that. Remember who you are, what you were made to be. Remember your words.
"Fire and Blood," Daenerys told the swaying grass. (ADWD, Daenerys X)

there needs to be a workplace comedy series about roberts small council pre-agot like stannis jon arryn renly littlefinger varys and barristan all in the same room regularly???
stannis being a joyless asshole trying to ban*spins wheel*high fives
littlefinger scheming against jon arryn and almost being caught out every episode
renly being a useless nepo baby and his only opinion being whatever will piss stannis off the most
robert as a recurring comedy relief character
varys being obviously evil and villain monologuing every 3 seconds but nobody noticing
barristan constantly staring into the camera like hes on the office

i love how jaime and barristan are in their own way dismantling the idea of knighthood.
okay call me crazy but aerys kingsgaurd was the last good kingsguard. now i know that they blindly followed orders that hurt others and that doesn’t exempt them from being bad people just because they followed orders but take away the white cloak and those are good men. even jaime he was a cocky asshole, but i’d be too if i was him. he’s like 17 is a member of the kingsguard and one of the best fighters of the time, he was golden and beautiful. AND HE ALSO KILLED AERYS. so he isnt completely brainwashed. but barristan and jaime are both put into positions where they are no longer a white cloak/ the white cloak doesn’t matter.
barristan is kicked out of the white cloaks and has to rethink his whole life. he goes to daenerys and reflects on his past mistakes and how he can change that.
jaime is captured by the starks and his white cloak doesn’t matter. he had already been mulling over the fact that the kingsguard is a lie since he killed aerys. he is scorned and forgot what it means to be honorable and good. he see that in brienne and is reminded of the stories of honor from his childhood. he comes back to kingslanding and sees how the kingsguard lacks all honor that he was reminded of with brienne. this is of course excluding loras (i’m about to make a post about loras and jaime’s relationship).
anyways i just wanted to yap really quick.
