i’ve been thinking a lot about what is so unique and appealing about 80s robin jay’s moral standing that got completely lost in plot later on. and i think a huge part of it is that in a genre so focused on crime-fighting, his motivations and approach don’t focus on the category of crime at all. in fact, he doesn’t seem to believe in any moral dogma; and it’s not motivated by nihilism, but rather his open-heartedness and relational ethical outlook.
we first meet (post-crisis) jay when he is stealing. when confronted about his actions by bruce he’s confident that he didn’t do anything wrong – he’s not apologetic, he doesn’t seem to think that he has morally failed on any account. later on, when confronted by batman again, jay says that he’s no “crook.” at this point, the reader might assume that jay has no concept of wrong-doing, or that stealing is just not one of the deeds that he considers wrong-doing. yet, later on we see jay so intent on stopping ma gunn and her students, refusing to be implicit in their actions. there are, of course, lots of reasons for which we can assume he was against stealing in this specific instance (an authority figure being involved, the target, the motivations, the school itself being an abusive environment etc.), but what we gather is that jay has an extremely strong sense of justice and is committed to moral duty. that's all typical for characters in superhero comics, isn't it? however, what remains distinctive is that this moral duty is not dictated by any dogma – he trusts his moral instincts. this attitude – his distrust toward power structures, confidence in his moral compass, and situational approach, is something that is maintained throughout his robin run. it is also evident in how he evaluates other people – we never see him condemning his parents, for example, and that includes willis, who was a petty criminal. i think from there arises the potential for a rift between bruce and jay that could be, have jay lived, far more utilised in batman comics than it was within his short robin run.
after all, while bruce’s approach is often called a ‘philosophy of love and care,’ he doesn’t ascribe to the ethics of care [eoc] (as defined in modern scholarship btw) in the same way that jay does. ethics of care ‘deny that morality consists in obedience to a universal law’ and focus on the ideals of caring for other people and non-institutionalized justice. bruce, while obviously caring, is still bound by his belief in the legal system and deontological norms. he is benevolent, but he is also ultimately morally committed to the idea of a legal system and thus frames criminals as failing to meet these moral (legal-adjacent) standards (even when he recognizes it is a result of their circumstances). in other words, he might think that a criminal is a good person despite leading a life of crime. meanwhile, for jay there is no despite; jay doesn't think that engaging in crime says anything about a person's moral personality at all. morality, for him, is more of an emotional practice, grounded in empathy and the question of what he can do for people ‘here and now.’ he doesn’t ascribe to maxims nor utilitarian calculations. for jay, in morality, there’s no place for impartiality that bruce believes in; moral decisions are embedded within a net of interpersonal relationships and social structures that cannot be generalised like the law or even a “moral code” does it. it’s all about responsiveness.
to sum up, jay's moral compass is relative and passionate in a way that doesn't fit batman's philosophy. this is mostly because bruce wants to avoid the sort of arbitrariness that seems to guide eoc. also, both for vigilantism, and jay, eoc poses a challenge in the sense that it doesn't create a certain 'intellectualised' distance from both the victims and the perpetrators; there's no proximity in the judgment; it's emotional.
all of this is of course hardly relevant post-2004. there might be minimal space for accommodating some of it within the canon progression (for example, the fact that eoc typically emphasises the responsibility that comes with pre-existing familial relationships and allows for prioritizing them, as well as the flexibility regarding moral deliberations), but the utilitarian framework and the question of stopping the crime vs controlling the underworld is not something that can be easily reconciled with jay’s previous lack of interest in labeling crime.
#fyi i'm ignoring a single panel in which jay says 'evil wins. he chose the life of crime' because i think there's much more nuance to that#as in: choosing a life of crime to deliberately cause harm is a whole another matter#also: inb4 this post is not bruce slander. please do not read it as such#as i said eoc is highly criticised for being arbitrary which is something that bruce seeks to avoid#also ethics of care are highly controversial esp that their early iterations are gender essentialist and ascribe this attitude to women#wow look at me accidentally girl-coding jay#but also on the topic of post-res jay.#it's typically assumed that ethics of care take a family model and extend it into morality as a whole#'the ethics of care considers the family as the primary sphere in which to understand ethical behavior'#so#an over-simplification: you are allowed to care for your family over everything else#re: jay's lack of understanding of bruce's conflict in duty as batman vs father#for jay there's no dilemma. how you conduct yourself in the familial context determines who you are as a person#also if you are interested in eoc feel free to ask because googling will only confuse you...#as a term it's used in many weird ways. but i'm thinking about a general line of thought that evolves into slote's philosophy#look at me giving in and bringing philosophy into comics. sorry. i tried to simplify it as much as possible#i didn't even say anything on criminology and the label and the strain theories.#i'm so brave for not info-dumping#i said even though i just info-dumped#jay.zip#jay.txt#dc#fatal flaw#core texts#robin days

Listen, I know Freud did Oedipus dirty by naming all things Oedipal after him but not even 10% as dirty as the Catholic church did my best boy Epicurus by making sure his name is associated with luxury, consumption of delicacies, and snobbery when he actually preached the pursuit of pleasure via slow-paced, communal, anti-consumerist living and wrote reams about the corruptive influence of money.

If a statement is true, it’s not defamation.
If a statement is opinion, it’s not defamation
If it’s without malice, it’s not defamation
Tumblr media
For example, if someone publicly states you cheated on your girlfriend, and you DID cheat on your girlfriend, then that is NOT defamation. The statement also has to be something that could be generally provable. If someone calls you a “Nazi”, it would usually be a comparative statement, not a statement posited as fact, so it usually wouldn’t be considered defamation UNLESS the person is saying you literally believe and take actions based in the idea of a superior race.
Also, a statement isn’t defamation if it’s an opinion. If someone says they think you’re a “jerk”, then it’s not defamation.
However, if someone publicly states you stole money from a bank, and they are knowingly lying about it, when you didn’t, that is considered defamation.
Furthermore, if there’s no malicious intent, it’s not considered defamation.
Defamation is when a person is intentionally making a false statement, posited as fact, about you in order to cause you harm.
Don’t call something defamation when it’s not defamation .

The one where Jackie helps Jan
A/N: Here it is … the unnecessary infodumping on philosophy. Or are they just flirting? Who knows, not me … thanks to everyone who’s still with me!
It was an oddly foggy day on campus, especially considering they still barely had reached September. The school grounds outside were hidden behind a deep hanging, thick coat of grey, leaving the library in a cold, dim light. They had secured a table right by one of the large windows, Jackie insisted that when the sky was clear the view was absolutely breathtaking. If one were to ask Jan, she‘d probably say it still was.
To shield herself from the chilly weather, Jackie wore a maroon sweater with their school symbol stitched on it, definitely a little too large for her slim frame. A white collar peaked out around her neck and a little gold pendant dangled between the unbuttoned top part. She wore little matching earrings, visible thanks to the messy half updo she had thrown her hair into. The humidity had turned it frizzy, the baby hairs flew free around her oval face, little curls that Jan wished she could run through her thumb and index finger, watching them jump right back into place as soon as she let go. The upperclass girl was leaning over one of the books they had pulled out of the philosophy section, glasses on her nose and her brows just slightly furrowed as she read. If Jan had it her way, the fog would never lift, leaving them in their warm little bubble here, hidden between rows of books and heavy wooden shelves.
„Jan? Jan!“
The purple haired girl blinked once, twice, three times before entering reality again. Jackie was looking at her with an amused twinkle in her eyes, the book she had been reading now closed and pushed back just enough for the senior to put her elbows on the table, head resting on her hands. „Have you finished the chapter?“, she asked.
„Uh“, Jan looked down at the copy of On The Nature Of Things that Jackie had insisted she should read to understand what Nicky had said last Thursday. Jan didn‘t have the heart to tell her that if she was being real honest, she had already forgotten what Nicky had said and that the Latin poem in front of her really didn‘t help with anything.
Luckily enough, Lagoona had kept her old notes from her freshmen philosophy class, so last night Jan had pulled an all nighter inhaling everything she could, just to be prepared for whatever Jackie was going to throw at her. And yes, maybe she wanted to impress her just a little bit.
„I’m not done with the whole thing, but …“ Glancing down at the page she quickly scanned for any key words that rang a bell. „it‘s pretty clear that the author tried to present the main arguments for Epicureanism. It’s kind of like a PowerPoint I guess.“
At that, Jackie couldn’t help but giggle. „You’re not wrong, Lucretius probably would’ve loved PowerPoint.“ Jan watched as Jackie hid her mouth behind her hand, trying to keep her voice down in the silence of the library. Grinning from ear to ear, Jan herself had a hard time trying not to scream as well. There were little dimples in the corners of Jackie‘s mouth whenever her laugh was earnest. Just like now.
„Alright“, Jackie breathed out through her nose, calming down again. In her whispering, she leaned over the table just a little bit so that Jan could hear her clearly. The latter had to fight the urge of letting her eyes trail down, where the open button of Jackie‘s collar were just a little too tempting not to glance past.
No! She had to focus on what Jackie was saying!
The brunette had one brow quirked up just slightly, her face proposing a challenge to Jan. „Can you tell me what exactly Epicureanism is?“
Jan sent a silent praise to her older sister who, despite all of her doodles and scribbled down song lyrics and melodies, had always managed to take complete, accessible notes. And was apparently enough of a hoarder to keep them even after dropping the class.
Excited about her newly acclaimed knowledge, Jan leaned forward towards Jackie just the slightest bit. Not too much though, she still had to be able to form sentences.
„Basically“, Jan began, „Epicurus followed the ideals of hedonism. Increase pleasure and decrease pain. He only starts to differ from that by solely focusing on the pleasurable aspect. To him, pursuing pleasure and peace of mind is the one main goal of man, and the avoidance of pain is simply a tool to get there. Epicurists stay away from conflict and politics, opting for a simple life and striving for immediate gratification rather than hard work for an uncertain future goal. Basically, that guy coded my sister‘s brain.“ Proud of the little joke she‘d made at the end, Jan couldn’t help but grin. It definitely didnt help that Jackie‘s smile got wider and wider with every word she‘d said, now nodding in approval.
„I‘m impressed“, she said, „I needed more time to understand this concept.“
„You didn‘t grow up with Rosé“, Jan retorted, so proud of the shade she was throwing, she almost wished Lagoona was here to hear her. But then again, it was so much nicer to be alone with Jackie, have her muffled giggles just to herself.
After taking a sip from her water bottle, Jackie spoke again. „Now lots of scholars criticise this point of view. And rightfully so, in my opinion. How can one simply advocate for the immediate gratification, only striving for the simple things in life? As nice and idealistic as it may sound at first, it simply does not survive the reality check. Epicurists completely forget about the bigger picture, about the fact that there is more to life than the next hour and the one after that. There is a whole next day, a whole next year, decade. The choices we make will influence those, whether we want them to or not, and it is simply immature to not consider that in our decision making. This is why feelings get hurt, why temperatures are rising on this planet. Because people think epicuristic, people think selfish.“
The more she talked, the more riled up Jackie seemed to become, both of her palms now pressed flat onto the table surface, leaning over into Jan‘s space as her eyes glimmered with emotion, almost bewildered. Jan suddenly understood why Jackie was president of the Philosophy club. This was her element, the debate was where she thrived. And it was mesmerising to watch. But Jan wasn’t going to let her just finish her monologue, no, she still had her own train of thought.
„I disagree“, she said. Two simple words, yet they sent Jackie leaning back in her chair, eyes never leaving Jan‘s as she crossed her arms, adamantly listening. Jan had her full, unparted attention. A feeling she could probably get drunk on if she tried. But not right now, not when this was her chance to show Jackie just what Jan could do.
„I disagree that Epicureanism is entirely selfish. Sure, it is not the ideal way of life and it is certainly not how a whole society should think, but why do you think so many people tend to do so anyways? Because we live in a duty-obsessed world. Tasks and morals are pushed onto us the moment we step into the world. Learn this, say that, stop crying. Listen to your elders, be polite to others, plan your future and yes, go to college too. We are so overwhelmed with all these things we have to do that most of us completely forget the things we want to do until it‘s either too late or the desire is too strong. As much as I criticise the way Rosé lives from one day to the next, the way she gets into trouble or talks a different person up every week, at the end of the day she has one thing I will forever envy her for: no regrets. She’s not afraid to act on that desire, on that immediate pleasure and it‘s brave of her. I wish I could do the same.“ The last sentence came out a whisper, so quiet, Jan wasn’t even sure it made its way over to Jackie‘s ears. But she also didn‘t even know if she really wanted it to. It felt too real, too vulnerable and intimate too fast. Yes, Jan had silently yearned for Jackie since the beginning of the semester, but this was still their first one on one conversation ever. She had to be more careful of what to say, she was on the best way of scaring Jackie away with her intensity and oh goodness, why was Jackie so quiet, why wouldn’t she stop looking at Jan-
When Jackie spoke, she was honest, probably the most unfiltered Jan had ever experienced her. The smile on the brunette‘s face was unreadable.
„You’re more intelligent than you think, Jan. You know how to defend your standpoint. Ms Monsoon is going to love you.“ The blush creeping up Jan‘s neck and into her cheeks had to be visible to Jackie. Trying to play it cool, Jan simply smiled, eyes trailing down nervously, looking at nothing in particular. „You think so?“
Jackie reached over the book separating them, her warm palm now resting on Jan‘s hand. It felt electrifying, hot and cold all at once. Jan tried her best not to shiver when she looked up to meet Jackie’s intense chocolate eyes staring right at her. „I know so, Jan, trust me. Okay?“
Jan nodded in response, unable to form words at this moment. They stayed like this for just a moment longer, Jackie‘s hand like a warm coat on a winter morning over Jan‘s, eyes interlocked, Jan’s wide and hazel, Jackie’s dark and calm. Jan felt nothing and everything at once. Like she was a wild wave running towards Jackie’s safe haven at unbelievable speed. Oh, how she wished she was.
Jackie‘s phone pinged, breaking the spell way too soon for Jan‘s liking. The older girl let go of her hand to grab her phone. „Ah shit, it‘s so late already!“ She pushed her chair back, basically jumping to her feet. „I have to go, Nicky will kill me if I leave her hanging in Anthropology.“ Her coat hanging loosely over her shoulders, backpack shouldered and the books she had brought herself pressed against her chest, Jackie turned to leave. „See you on Thursday, Jan“, she shouted over her shoulder, definitely too loud for library customs. Jan thought it was cute how Jackie hurried towards the door, shooting her one last wave. „You’re really good at this, by the way!“ If it didn‘t already happen, now was the time where Jan‘s heart would jump out of her chest to run a marathon of triumph for sure.

wallahi all this messi to barça only ever comes out when barça have a scandal or when messi's got smth big coming up (bayern rn), they're actually trying to fuck him over lol. and everytime it's "he's at psg, i can't speak more", he hasn't renewed at psg so you can actually and you already have just by saying that shit??? just sounds like "nothing happened so i have nothing to say" lol. mf apparently meet with his father and agent in a meeting that "went well" but can't do more than "glance" at him at the best awards be serious. and now coolers are coming for gaston again like he doesn't have direct access to messi and his team who said no meeting happened. there's so little information and absolutely none from a trustworthy source, it's a choice at this point to believe a lying politicial and a drunk twitch streamer 😭😭
in a way i think it's funny, but also sick, that laporta is bringing up messi like this, in this specific context, on the same day he got elected as the president of barça for the second time by using messi's name
Tumblr media
"i still feel sad about it." you are a liar. you are a politician. you are a lawyer. you are a snake. messi had offers from clubs leagues above pee es gee lined up but he was told the barça renewal was a done deal so he rejected them all, and look where he got pushed to: same place luis and him were warning neymar against not too many years ago
i hate hate hate the coolers in the comments who are either so desperate to have messi back that they're ignoring all the facts, or are slandering messi bc hurr durr he's going to hurt our rebuild. barça twt is actually cancer, i simply have no words

A man walks to the police station. He is torn limb from limb. His screams echo across the halls for eternity.
Is he real, or just a figment of my imagination? Certainly, he can't not exist, his nonexistence lost in the breadth of time and space throughout the world. Perhaps this story happened in Finland yesterday, or Jordan the day after tomorrow, mainland China a hundred years ago, or Germany after the collapse of civilization.
Who would deny him his death?
Who is there to tell us of his life?
The great philosopher says that if a tree falls in the woods and nobody is there to hear it falling, it does not fall.
That's not true. I can see it falling in my imagination, falling to or from its death thousands of times in millions of different situations with nothing to observe it.
The tree is more real than reality, having lived more lives than possible before its death gives it its existence. Certainly, it would be improbable for these trees to not exist somewhere and sometime.
In the same way, lies are more real than reality. They let us live as many lives as we want, at a cost of the superposition of the lies eventually collapsing under the scrutiny of the observer. Certainly, it would be impossible for lies to exist without someone to know them for what they are.
This gives lies a concrete existence unknown to the real world. Sure, a person can see things with their own eyes, touch things, but this is just another fiction that Camus and Sartre recognized. After all, a cube is just three or fewer skewed squares.
The world of reality and fiction are not opposites; they are the same world we live in. Beauty, truth, these things are both ideals beyond the grasp of comprehension.
That's why I bought a chicken, fed it gunpowder, and lit it on fire. That's why I stole someone's bones for my art and posted it online. That's why I trespass on someone's property every chance I get. That's why I can recite the state secrets of Denmark by memory. That's why I will achieve every dream and realize every hope i know. That's why I will lie down in the dirt and become one with the God. The seventh seal is placed, has changed our very own perception. The eighth seal betrays us, yellow hippopotamus deception.

It is said that one-third of people respected Shakyamuni Buddha, another one-third disliked him, and the rest was indifferent to him. Since even Shakyamuni Buddha was seen like this, it is only natural that there are people who dislike us.
If we swing between joy and sorrow beause of other people's judgement of us, we are unable to see something far more important for the future.
There are times when we must put up with any slander with equanimity.

Taylor Swift is a Female Rage icon? Get a Grip.
I’ve just received word that Taylor Swift is calling her show “Female Rage: The Musical.” Here is my very much pissed off response to that nonsense:
The phrase, Female Rage has an intimately rich history:
Some of the first accounts of female rage dates to the Italian renaissance. To be clear, women in those days were not allowed to become painters- the arts were seen as the domain of men. They did not believe that women have rich inner lives capable of delivering the type of artistic innovation with which renaissance men were obsessed.
However, rebels abounded, through the might of their fucking rage. Several women created some of the most compellingly emotional paintings I’ve ever fucking seen. They did it without permission, without financial support, and often under the threat of punishment. They did it as a protest. In paintings like “Timoclea Killing Her Rapist” by Elisabetta Sirani (1659), and another by Artemisia Gentileschi “Slaying of Holofernes” (1612) as it depicts the bravery of Judith as she slayed a traveling warlord out to rape Judith and enslave her city. The painting often is referred to as a way Artemisia was envisioning herself as slaying her rapist. These paintings were used against these women as proof that they were unfeminine- and far too angry.  Both these women suffered immensely for their audacity to call attention to the violation men perpetrated on them. Female Rage bleeds off these paintings- bleeds right through to the bone-deep acknowledgement of the injustice women faced being barred from the arts and having their humanity violated in such a sick way. Both women were hated- and considered far too angry.
In philosophy, also as early as the 15th century, an example of female rage is a philosophical text, often hailed as one of the first feminists works in the western world, written by Christine de Pizan titled The City of Ladies (1405). She wrote in protest on the state of women- writing that “men who have slandered the opposite sex out of envy have usually know women who were cleverer and more virtuous than they are” (“The City of Ladies”). People mocked her all her life- but she stood fast to her convictions. She was widowed at a young age with children to feed and the men wouldn’t let women have jobs! She wrote this book and sold it so that she could feed her family- and to protest the treatment of women as lesser than men. Her work was called aggressive and unkempt- they said she was far too angry.
In the 18th century, a young Mary Wollstonecraft wrote, A Vindication of the Right of Women ( 1792) upon learning that the civil rights won in the French Revolution did not extend to women! She wrote in protest of the unjust ways other philosophers (like Rousseau) spoke about the state of women- as if they were lesser. She wrote to advocate for women’s right to education, which they did not yet have the right to! She wrote to advocate for the advancement of women’s ability to have their own property and their own lives! The reception of this text, by the general public, lead to a campaign against Wollstonecraft- calling her “aggressive” and far too angry.
Moving into modernity, the 1960’s, and into literary examples, Maya Angelou publishes I know why the caged Bird Sings (1969) in which she discusses the fraught youth of a girl unprotected in the world. It beautifully, and heart-wrenchingly, described growing up in the American South during the 1930’s as it subjected her to the intersection of racism and sexism. The story is an autobiographical account of her own childhood, which explains how patriarchal social standards nearly destroyed her life. Upon the reception of her book, men mostly called it “overly emotional” and far too angry. Maya Angelou persisted. She did not back down from the honesty with which she shared her life- the raw, painful truth. With Literature, she regained a voice in the world.
Interwoven into each of the examples I have pulled out here, is the underlying rage of women who want to be seen as human beings, with souls, dreams and hopes, yet are not seen as full members of society at the behest of men. They take all that rage, building up in their souls, and shift it to create something beautiful: positive change. Each of these cases, I have outlined above, made remarkable strides for the women as a whole- we still feel the impact of their work today. They were so god-damn passionate, so full of righteous anger, it burst out into heart-stopping, culture-shifting art. Feminine rage is therefore grounded in experiences of injustice and abuse- yet marked too by its ability to advocate for women's rights. It cannot be historically transmogrified away from these issues- though Taylor Swift is doing her best to assert female rage as pitifully dull, full of self-deprecation, and sadness over simply being single or losing money. She trivializes the seriousness with which women have pled their cases of real, painful injustice and suffering to the masses time and time again. The examples above deal with subjects of rape, governmental tyranny, and issues of patriarchally inspired social conditioning to accept women as less human than men. It is a deadly serious topic, one in which women have raised their goddamn voices for centuries to decry- and say instead, “I am human, I matter, and men have no right to violate my mind, body, or soul.”
The depictions of female rage over the last few centuries, crossing through many cultures, is an array of outright anger, fearsome rage, and into utter despair. The one unyielding, solid underpinning, however, is that the texts are depicting the complete agency of the women in question. The one uniting aspect of female rage is that it must be a reaction to injustice; instead of how male depictions of female rage function, (think Ophelia), the women are the agents of their art with female made- female rage. They push forth the meaning through their own will- not as subjects of male desires or abuses, but as their own selves. That is what makes the phrase so empowering. They are showing their souls as a form of protest to the men who treat women like we have no soul to speak of.
Taylor Swift’s so-called female rage is a farce in comparison. Let’s look at an example: “Mad Woman” (2020). I pull this example, and not something from her TTPD set, because this is one of the earliest examples of her using the phrase female rage to describe her dumb music. (Taylor Swift talking about "mad woman" | folklore : the long pond studio sessions (youtube.com)
The lyrics from “Mad Woman” read “Every time you call me crazy, I get more crazy/... And when you say I seem angry, I get more angry”
How exactly is agreeing with someone that you are “crazy” a type of female rage in which she’s protesting the patriarchy. The patriarchy has a long history of calling women “insane” if they do not behave according to the will of men. So, how is her agreeing with the people calling her crazy- at all subversive in the way that artworks, typically associated with concept of female rage, are subversive. What is she protesting? NOTHING.
Then later, she agrees, again, that she's “angry.” The issue I draw here is that she’s not actually explicating anything within the music itself that she’s angry about- she just keeps saying she's angry over and over, thus the line falls flat. The only thing this anger connects to is the idea of someone calling her angry- which then makes her agree that she is... angry. So, despite it being convoluted, it’s also just not actually making any kind of identifiable point about society or the patriarchy- so again, I beg, what on Earth makes this count as Female Rage?
In essence, she is doing the opposite of what the examples above showcase. In letting an outside, presumably male, figure tell Taylor Swift what she is feeling, and her explicit acceptance of feeling “crazy” and “angry,” she is ultimately corroborating the patriarchy not protesting it. Her center of agency comes from assignment of feelings outside of herself and her intrinsic agreement with that assignment; whereas female rage is truly contingent on the internal state, required as within our own selves, of female agency. As I stated above, the women making female rage art must have an explicit agency throughout the work. Taylor Swift’s song simply does not measure up to this standard.
Her finishing remarks corroborates the fact that she's agreeing with this patriarchal standard of a "mad" or crazy woman:
"No one likes a mad woman/ You made her like that"
Again, this line outsources agency through saying "you made her like that" thus removing any possibility of this song being legitimate female rage. There is simply no agency assigned to the woman in the song- nor does the song ever explicitly comment on a social issue or protestation of some grievous injury to women's personhood.
She honestly not even being clever- she's just rhyming the word “crazy” with “crazy.” Then later rhyming “angry” with “angry.” Groundbreaking stuff here.
Perhaps Taylor Swift is angry, in “Mad Woman,” but it is not the same type of rage established in the philosophical concept of female rage of which art historians, philosophers, and literary critics speak. Instead, it is the rage of a businesswoman that got a bad deal- but it is not Female Rage as scholars would identify it. In “Mad Woman” I fear her anger is shallow, and only centered on material loss- through damaging business deals or bad business partners. She is not, however, discussing what someone like Christine de Pizan was discussing by making a case for the concept that woman also have souls like men do. In her book, she had to argue that women have souls, because men were unconvinced of that. Do you see the difference? I am saying that Swift’s concerns are purely monetary and material, whereas true examples of female rage center on injustice done against their personhood- as affront to human rights. Clearly, both things can make someone mad- but I’d argue the violation of human rights is more serious- thus more deserving of the title “Female Rage.”
Simply put, Taylor Swift is not talking about anything serious, or specific, enough to launch her into the halls of fame for "Female Rage" art. She's mad, sure, but she's mad the way a CEO gets mad about losing a million dollars. She's not mad about women's position in society- or even just in the music industry.
She does this a lot. The album of “Reputation” was described as female rage. Songs in “Folklore” were described as female rage. Now, she’s using the term to describe TTPD, which is the most self-centered, ego-driven music I’ve heard in a long time.
Comparing the injustice, and complete subjugation, of women’s lives- to being dumped by a man or getting a bad deal- wherein she is still one of the most powerful women of the planet- is not only laughable, but offensive.

“ Why do people hate things being Jedi critical? It’s okay if they’re flawed.”
There’s flawed and then there’s presenting the idea the in universe religious minority who essentially have to fucking do everything as narratively ‘flawed’ bc they don’t appease everybody essentially. Be it Anakin, be it their philosophy, etc and correlate to the idea of how that leads to their fall. Most ‘Jedi critical’ points just assigns a unusual level of onus on them for simply existing. Jedi are human/human-like so we know they’re flawed to a point but when they’re accessory to slavery, accuse them of child taking, or whatever points and ignore context, it’s not being critical. Y’all just wanna slander.
Whats actually annoying is how this fandom & this franchise can look at this religious minority group (composing a lot of PoCs & allusions to other cultures) who get literally persecuted by a politician who created a entire army called Stormtroopers, which is right on the nose for Nazi allegories, and go “lets craft ideas & stories that suggest they’re at fault for really existing & not being perfect paragons of good.” This is the same fandom to say the Sith made some good “points” despite being a part of the problem, ignore the Msndalorian’s weird ass system of government, and find ways to sympathize with characters who participate in murder & genocide because they’re hot (Anakin, Kallus, Maul).
And to top it all off, the story had them killed via mind control to shoot them in the back by people they bonded with for maximum hurt & efficiency after fabricating a war using OTHERS.

Some notes to myself for writing gay Roman dudes, based on details from Roman Homosexuality by Craig Williams. Not intended as authoritative, but I thought it might be useful for other writers:
Class matters. Are they both freeborn? Slaves? Is one a slave or freedman? This will play a big role not just in the power dynamics between them, but also in what their peers would consider socially acceptable.
Age matters. The Romans judged adult men more harshly for acting "effeminate" than they did for adolescent boys.
Yes, adult/teen relationships were a thing in ancient Rome. Not specifically a male/male thing; girls were usually married off as teens, too. But if (like me) you'd rather not write that, there's plenty of evidence for relationships between adult men (or between two teens), too. There were at least a few triads and other non-monogamous living arrangements, too.
Roman men wouldn't think of themselves as gay, bi or straight. They could certainly have preferences for one gender or another, but that wouldn't have any social consequences. There was no need to "come out" as being attracted to men; everybody knew that sometimes dudes were just hot.
On the other hand, performing masculinity was a big deal. There was a lot of pressure for men to act assertive, sexually dominant, self-controlled, and to get married and have kids. This could be compatible with also having sex with men - as long as you were the "man" in the relationship (excuse the heteronormative phrase). But more "effeminate" partner(s) would be looked down upon.
The Romans cared a lot about who topped or bottomed. This had consequences for a man's reputation. It could be interesting to explore how your characters react to these pressures, how they view themselves, and how they talk to their partners about it.
Sometimes falling in love was seen as unmanly. Roman masculinity demanded that men exercise control of their desires, and a man who seemed too emotional might get mocked or seen as weak. This might make for a neat internal conflict if a character cares way more than he's "supposed to" about his partner.
For consenting adult men, the "dangers" of a romantic/sexual relationship were low. This was not 1960s America; there were no cops busting down gay bars. A man who was seen as effeminate could get mocked, slandered, or passed over for promotion, and he might not be allowed to work as a lawyer. But he wouldn't have been ostracized, and almost certainly wouldn't face criminal charges. Numerous men were called "effeminate" but had successful careers. Wealth, family connections, or a strong military record could also shield a man from stigma to some extent. (Cf. Caesar getting called the "Queen of Bithynia" throughout his career.)
The concept of male/male marriage was understood and talked about. We have some limited (and maybe false?) stories of it happening, and it was never legally recognized. But our Roman sources claimed it happened sometimes, so Roman characters could theoretically consider doing it, too.
The strongest sexual stigmas appear to have been reserved for cunnilingus, fellators and female adulterers, not for effeminate men, and not for male/male couples.
Not all Romans had the same attitudes. Rome was super diverse in the 200 BCE-200 CE period. There were many ethnicities, languages, and religions in Rome itself, and people traveled a lot. Opinions also varied from more conservative to more open-minded Romans, between social classes and professions, and different schools of philosophy. Individuals developed their own opinions, too. So you have a lot of flexibility as a writer for what Roman characters might believe, and what their social circles and daily life might look like.
There was a general shift in the 300s CE toward prudishness. Laws got stricter, both toward homosexuality and toward non-married heterosexual affairs.
There's a difference between having prejudiced characters, and a prejudiced narrative. You might also choose not to talk about prejudice in your story if you don't want to. It's your story, after all.
(Please correct me if I got something really wrong. Not all scholars agree with Williams' conclusions, but I haven't had time to read others yet.)

pretty disappointed with the way 7s have translated wwx's iconic 'right or wrong' speech.
"Thank you for keeping me company today, and thank you for telling me about my shijie's wedding,” Wei Wuxian said slowly. “But—right or wrong, the decision is my own. It doesn't matter what others think of those decisions. I will bear the consequences of my actions, whether they be good or ill. I know what I should do. And I believe everything is still within my ability to control."
it has very basic language & tone, it doesn't flow smoothly at all. wwx's remarks here are supposed to sound poetic.
'不過, 是非在己, 毀譽由人, 得失不論。該怎麼做,我自己心裡有數。我也相信我自己控制得住。'
the first sentence even uses that classic 4 character structure (this is what lwj's speech patterns are known for).
here's exr's translation for comparison. it reads far more smoothly and rhythmically, as do the other fan translations further down
‘Wei WuXian spoke slowly, “Thank you for keeping me company today. Thank you for telling me the news about my shijie’s marriage too. But, let the self judge the right and the wrong, let others decide to praise or to blame, let gains and losses remain uncommented on. I, too, know what I should and shouldn’t do. I believe that I’ll be able to control it as well.”’
i also think 7s' version obfuscates the meaning, 'But—right or wrong, the decision is my own. It doesn't matter what others think of those decisions. I will bear the consequences of my actions, whether they be good or ill.'
here is how some others have translated the same phrase
'Right and wrong lies within oneself; let others speak of ruin or glory; pay no mind to gains or losses.' (spicychickenyang)
'However, right and wrong is a personal issue*. Leave the slander to others. Let’s not talk about merits and demerits.'
*personal issue: WWX actually said ‘right and wrong are inside the self’' (translation + footnote from qinghe-nie)
wwx is explaining his moral philosophy, that people should decide for themselves what right and wrong is, and not factor what they gain or lose into moral decisions. this is critical to the themes of mob mentality, centralised authority and corruption in mdzs.
in 7s' version, it could be read as 'i make my own decisions, right or wrong is irrelevant.' it's ambiguous, but i don't know why they've chosen to add ambiguity that isn't present in the original text.
7s also added words/phrases that do not reflect the original text. the line 'I will bear the consequences of my actions' is entirely their own invention. the chinese phrase is '得失不論' 得失 = gains and losses, 不論 = do not speak of. additionally, wwx says 'my decisions,' 'my actions,' 'i will bear' — in 7s it comes across as if he's just talking about himself & his specific circumstance, rather than being a speech about his stance on morality in general.
finally, this line 'And I believe everything is still within my ability to control."' just isn't accurate. specifically, wwx does not say everything is within his ability to control, he says he believes he'll be able to control himself. the chinese line is '我也相信我自己控制得住。'我自己 = myself. wwx said this specifically in response to lwj asking if he will be able to control his cultivation earlier on.
i know people are gonna think, 'translation is nuanced, poetic language is hard to translate!' well, the fan translators did a pretty good job of it, why is it so hard for a professional publishing company to do the same?? why did 7s choose to add words/phrases and punctuation that aren't even present in the original text, making it disjointed and rambly? why did they ignore context and add meanings that aren't even in the original text?

Ain't no way you're paying victim. You called Zuko a supremacist colonizer when his whole arc was about rejecting the Fire Nation's nationality and colonialism. You defended Aang prioritizing his culture over Katara's trauma. You can't get mad at Zuko for brushing off Aang using his culture to project his self-righteousness and not at Aang for dictating Katara's grief by implying culture is the only right way. In no way was that user being racist.
(Especially because Aang has made fun of cultural Water Tribe food and touched Water Tribe artifacts like they were toys)
YOU started the confrontation with her, then got mad that she rightfully replied (twice). You're butthurt because you were proven wrong. Grow up.
Hello anon, may I draw your attention to the fact that my interaction with the person you obviously mean here was limited to one post in which I disagreed with her opinion and dared to express my point of view, in which I was so polite, that I even apologized for the fact that the post turned out to be long and praised her art (yes, I bought that, mistaking this AI for real watercolours. Only after the last post did I look more closely and noticed all these countless artefacts, sixth fingers and meaningless shadows lying on the wrong sides of the form). I wrote my opinion and forgot about it because, you know, I have a life. But it seems that my post really hurt you and this person much and you felt so insulted and offended that you have not been able to calm down for several months: that person wrote gigantic (but rather meaningless) “responses” a few months later, you all bombarded my mailbox with anonymous hatred, and took ridiculous attempts to slander my art.
And, anon, can I ask: do you even read what you are responding to? I didn't call Zuko a supremacist colonizer; I called him the great-grandson of a colonizer (which is literally who he is in the story). And yes, Zuko's role in history is worse than it could have been for a conventional great-grandson of a supremacist colonizer, because Zuko personally took part in his great-grandfather's war, attacking the Southern Water Tribe, threatening the elderly and children, and using physical force against them
Tumblr media Tumblr media
burning down the Kyoshi village and trying to capture the avatar, the world's last hope, even after he began to realize that this was not right (that scene from the book one where he turned away from the fire nation banner).
Just because Zuko repented and self-improved doesn't suddenly erase these facts from his story. I think that remorse and deep pain for his actions will haunt Zuko throughout his life because he truly became a good person, unlike you, who are just ready to pretend that none of this ever happened and are not worth remembering.
Aang is a genocide survivor. His beliefs are hard-won experience. Because he knows what it's like to lose your culture, your people and find the passed away parent (their direct parallel with the Katara). His philosophy of forgiveness is not something he was taught in school, nor is he the affluent 21st century suburban boy as he's so carefully portrayed by you. This is his experience. And he shares this experience with his friend, who is also a genocide survivor. He and Katara share this experience and Aang has every right to tell her his opinion. It is Katara's choice to agree or not, and she makes her choice, but Aang had every right to express his opinion.
And I wonder, anon, what can you say about Sokka? He is just as much a victim in this situation as Katara. Sokka is not a pacifist or an air nomad. Kya was also Sokka's mother. And he is also against Katara committing a murder. This is not the first time I have seen how, while attacking Aang, haters pass by Sokka in deathly silence, and past Zuko who also agreed with Aang in the end.
I will not specifically address your point about Aang being a racist for not liking traditional Katara’s food or for putting a hat on without knowing what kind of hat it was. I don't believe you are stupid enough to actually make such arguments seriously, it must be trolling. It’s clear that you have nothing to complain about Aang at all, because these arguments look desperate.
It's impressive how much the opinion of a stranger on the Internet can hurt you. Are you so offended that someone dared to respond to your baseless accusations against fictional cartoon characters? Or maybe you're so offended by the fact that I can criticize a character and keep liking him (Zuko is literally one of my three favorite characters, along with Toph and Aang). If you look at my blog, you'll get a pretty clear impression of how much I love Zuko and what a giant amount of time and effort I spend on art dedicated to him. Because I see all of Zuko's flaws and still continue to love him—unlike you, who only love the emasculated "ideal" version of him. As very well said here, your treatment of Zuko is very similar to how Ozai treated Azula: "be absolutely perfect, otherwise you're a good for nothing waste of space". This is very noticeable from the posts of the person you are defending here.
So yes, the advice to grow up is very good, but you should turn it on yourself, who, for some reason, writes your complaints anonymously, like a coward, or on those people whom you are defending. This is the Internet, and if you're not ready that not everyone agrees with your opinion and that someone can actually respond to your takes, maybe you should just get offline.
(I see that you want to start a drama, but you are in the wrong place. Any anonymous letters like this one will be deleted.😎)

My friend (intp) is bullying Sunday for being weak and a people pleaser but it somehow makes me love him even more, help me 😭😭😭😭😭😭
Honestly... your friend has a point.
Before someone throws their metaphorical rocks at me, being genuinely altruistic and kind is not a weakness, unless, you're completely denying your personal needs and growth. Then it becomes a toxic limbo where you're afraid to acknowledge yourself, terrified of accepting that considering your own interest before others' sometimes isn't going to make you a selfish prick. In which case, you gradually grow distant from yourself, to the point where you can't even answer what your favorite color is without overthinking.
In such a situation, even if you constantly self-reflect (Sunday being described as self-disciplined) the net result will be that you haven't improved in actuality as much as you thought you had. Which is precisely why people constantly point out Sunday's flaws in the the form of 'he's insane/not stable' because that is the surface level of his inner struggles and ultimately, what is translated to them.
Sunday truly did want good, his will for a sweet paradise was so strong that he almost achieved Aeonhood. The only reason why 'people pleaser' has become a slander in his case is that he neglected his own self, thus creating so many flaws in his philosophy. I don't really blame him, because he didn't have anyone to guide him towards the healthy path or, tell him to prioritize himself for once ; except for Robin. But by the time Robin understood all of this stuff, the damage had probably been dealt.
In simpler terms, Sunday needs to find the balance between prioritizing himself when required and using his empathy moderately. He needs to really accept the fact that whatever other people do with their lives isn't his responsibility — if he plans to reach his absolute potential, that is :]
