Kenzo Homme Eau de Toilette Intense (eau de toilette) Kenzo Homme Kenzo
Woods
KENZO HOMME Eau de Toilette Intense, an Eau de Toilette inspired by the intensity of bamboo and serenity of a sea breeze. The freshness of pink peppercorn coupled with a sea breeze contrasts with the warmth of a fig wood and sandalwood accord, like salty skin warmed by the sun.
The new KENZO HOMME intense blue bottle is an ode to poetry. Its shape mirrors the strength and flexibility of bamboo and its design is all about verticality. Its bevelled cap evokes the cut of a katana, a sword used by samurai.

Peppercorn Tree (schinus molle) It is native to the Peruvian Andes. The bright pink fruits of Schinus molle are often sold as "pink peppercorns" although S. molle is unrelated to true pepper (Piper nigrum). Also know as Peruvian pepper, American pepper, Peruvian peppertree, escobilla, false pepper, rosé pepper, molle del Peru, pepper tree, peppercorn tree, California pepper tree, pirul, Peruvian mastic, Anacahuita o Aguaribay and Pepperina. They grow to 15 meters (50 feet). Out at Gunnedah in central west NSW this weekend. I remember climbing these as a kid at school in Dubbo. They’re all over the central west. Tough as nails tree. #peppercorn #peppercorntree #schinusmolle #tree #pepper #redpepper #shade #mygarden #red #green #myplants #homegrown #australiangardens #australiangarden #hardy #easygrow (at Gunnedah Show Society) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cdxc0_WPm3d/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

(Spawned by this post and done separately bc I didn't want to derail.)
Folk magic traditions and folk medicine, historically speaking, tend to rely heavily on regionally-available resources. Whatever was growing in their particular biome was what got used. So we see many many plants with overlapping usages or correspondence. And it may SEEM repetitive in an age where we can source pretty much whatever we want or need from the internet or from local stores that import herbs and spices.
White sage and palo santo are excellent examples, but we can also look at things that are closer to home. Consider, for instance, the humble peppercorn.
Native to the India, black pepper is one of the oldest known spices in the world, with usage records going back over 5000 years, and is a staple ingredient in most household spice cabinets. Even the blandest, most white-bread kitchens will at least have salt and pepper on hand, and pepper has a plethora of magical uses from protection to cleansing to fertility to warding off bad luck and malefic magic.
AND YET. Black pepper used to be the most expensive spice in the western world. Literally worth its' weight in gold in the ancient, classical, and medieval periods. It was used by physicians to treat a variety of digestive complaints and was believed to reverse the effects of certain poisons. It was so valuable, people used to pay their rent with it, much in the way that Roman soldiers once received salt as part of their wages. It wasn't until the Renaissance that black pepper started to be affordable for an average household as trade expanded and other substances like coffee, cocoa, and saffron gained in popularity.
So we might easily reach for a courtesy pepper packet for a quick banishing or protection ritual today, but that's not something the average medieval English peasant looking to ward off bad luck or keep evil spirits out of their house would have access to. But what they DID have was rowan trees. And we see many references in the folk magic of the British Isles to rowan boughs or rowan berries being using for protection, fertility, cleansing, and the warding-off of misfortune and magical harm.
So instead of going right for the white sage or palo santo, why not try smoke-cleansing with rosemary and bay leaf? They have the same magical properties and are much more affordable and readily available, plus that added bonus of, yanno, avoiding culturally appropriative or overharvested plants.
Anyway, point is, widespread availability is all well and good, but you'd be surprised just how much you can find in your own backyard and how useful it can be in your craft.

Bar Shift: Part 4 (Finale)
And just like that, this little collection is complete! I hope you enjoyed reading my writing as I develop my style.
Word Count: 3,407
Part 3 here.
Tumblr media
You immediately found Tori and gave her a warm hug and dismissing her from her duties before seeking out Jacob.
“What’s on the agenda?” you asked him while picking up a rag and beginning to wipe down the bar.
“I’ll do the till and start getting knock-offs ready for the chefs, if you start shutting down the unoccupied areas and chuck on the closing setlist,” he nodded at you with a warm smile, “don’t worry, I’ll leave Sanji’s for you.”
“Thanks, sweetheart,” you smiled at Jacob and continuing to wipe down the bar and collect empty drinking vessels, “anything interesting happen while I was on my fifteen?”
“Oh, the usual,” he shrugged, “some green-haired swordsman challenged the broody swashbuckler to a duel. I’m placing my bets on the wine-drinker, to be honest with you.”
You hummed in response before making your way over to start cooling down the room with a slow set-list. You shuffled the bar regulars into the broader communal space and bid farewell to the ones done with their dining experience at Baratie.
“Hello pumpkin,” you heard Patty call from behind you. You groaned in response, knowing he was going to playfully jab at you regarding your encounter with Zeff earlier in the morning.
“Hello, you crusty old peppercorn,” you jabbed back at him, causing him to laugh in response. A swarm of chefs entered the bar area, their white chef’s jackets, blue cravats and tall hats removed from their bodies to reveal their casual underclothes.
“Got anything special for knock offs?” he asked you with a warm smile. You collected an empty pitcher formerly containing an amber ale and held it in your arms as you wiped down the surface.
“Jacob’s getting some beer ready for you, if you’re keen,” you responded offhandedly.
“I am absolutely keen, sweetheart,” he responded, clapping a firm hand on your shoulder affectionately. You scrunched your nose at him before ushering him out of your way so you could continue packing down the bar.
After you collected the final miscellaneous pieces of glassware in your arms and placing them in the sink behind the bar, you decided to commence the task of creating something special for Sanji to enjoy. Sure, you’ve shared a bottle of wine or two between you, but after the meal he prepared for you earlier this morning; you couldn’t just bring out any old thing.
You pursed your lips and looked to the vast amount of ingredients laying before you. Several different whiskey varieties, vermouth, wood chips, citrus and rum were calling to you specifically. You then allowed a broad smile to fall over your face.
“What’s got you smiling like that?” you heard Jacob call over your shoulder. You turned to him with a determined look on your face.
“Oh no,” he said with a mock surprise, “you’re going to bring out the big cannons, aren’t you?”
“Oh yes I am,” you responded cracking your neck slightly at the challenge.
“You’re gonna do the Rum Martinez?” he asked you with a quirked brow.
“I’m gonna do the Rum Martinez,” you confirmed with a nod of your head, a smirk pulling at the corner of your mouth.
“Good luck,” he said, patting your back before returning to line up several tankards of amber ale for the chefs as they arrived at the bar.
You collected apple tree wood chips, a blow torch, semi-sweet vermouth, maraschino liqueur, rum bitters and a bottle of one of the finest rums you had on the menu. You placed a tea strainer next to the bar, an empty corked decanter, a cocktail mixer and three glasses on the counter as you began your assembly. You also began rolling three cigarettes and placing them on the counter for later assembly.
As you began assembling this overly complex cocktail, you paid no mind to the amount of your coworkers watching your movements. One set of eyes you were particularly unaware of belonged to your boss, who decided to join his staff for a drink after retiring for the night. He quirked his brow as he saw you reach for the special reserve rum, but chose to remain quiet and not protest at the use.
You used the blowtorch to ignite the woodchips, setting the semi flame-thrower down and immediately dampening the chips with a maraschino cherry reduction. You placed the uncorked decanter over the smoke and successfully syphoned the fumes into the glass container, corking the bottle one completed. You set aside the now cloudy decanter and discarded the woodchips in the compost bin beneath the bar.
You moved on to preparing the liquids for this complex cocktail, pouring equal parts special reserve rum and the semi-sweet vermouth into the cocktail shaker. You brought a small, long armed teaspoon and placed a small portion of the maraschino liquor onto it before moving to place the spoon within the liquid. You scooped some ice into the metal shovel and placed several pieces into the liquid, twirling it to cool it down to a lower temperature for a solid minute.
“What are you making there, sweetheart? Looks overly complicated for a simple knock-off,” you heard Carne call over to you, prompting you to smirk in response.
“Leave her alone, Carne,” you heard your boss order the line cook, prompting your eyebrows to slightly raise, “I’m allowing it, just this once.”
You smiled to yourself, making a mental note to ask for permission, forgiveness and gratitude at him in future.
You brought the tea strainer to the liquid and moved it to the cloudy decanter, timing it in your mind.
“Uncork, strain, recork, swirl, uncork, sift” you repeated three times in your mind before you hyped yourself up enough to undertake the task.
You timed it perfectly: uncorking the smoke-riddled decanter, sifting the rum mixture into the jug without missing a drop, recorking the neck and you began to swirl the mixture within the walls of the glass container.
Sanji walked up from below deck, smiling at Patty and unbuttoning his wrists from his floor uniform and rolling them up. He walked over to the seat Zeff was atop, noticing the intensity of Zeff’s gaze at something behind the bar. He followed his gaze to fall directly on you, rotating a darkened liquid within a cloudy decanter. He smiled as he watched your concentration while you rotated the decanter for the final time, successfully imbuing the apple tree wood-chips into the liquid within.
He took a seat on the bar stool directly beside Zeff, which drew your attention immediately to the two kitchen superiors in front of you.
“Evening Chef,” you acknowledged Zeff first with a nod, “sous-chef,” you nodded at Sanji.
“Evening, Pumpkin,” Zeff responded with a small chuckle, “what are we having?”
You laughed at his question, knowing he would absolutely want a sample of this overly complicated concoction you had assembled: which was why you brought out three glasses instead on just two.
Although he had a complex relationship with the blonde sous-chef when it came to sampling new dishes; when alcohol was involved, his tastebuds were prepped and ready to participate.
“It’s called a Rum Martinez,” you said with a broad smile, placing two crystal short glasses in front of the two leaders of the kitchen. You uncorked the crystal decanter and began pouring 90mls of liquid into the three glasses in front of you. You smiled as you felt the gaze of both Sanji and Zeff completely fixate on the dark liquid as you poured it.
Zeff reached for the glass, prompting you to reprimand the chef.
“Tsk, tsk, impatient as always, Chef,” you scolded him, prompting him to release a low growl. You laughed at his reaction, reaching for the three cigarettes and bringing the filter end to your lips before reaching for the lighter in your lefthand pant pocket. You flicked the flint and ignited the ends of the three cylindrical objects before collecting them from your lips while exhaling away from your guests. You placed the cigarettes with the filters facing your head chef and sous chef with a smile, before doing the same with your own.
“This seems like an overly complex way to propose, but I accept,” Zeff laughed, reaching again for the glass which you finally allowed him to collect. You scrunched up your nose and felt again a blush rise to your cheeks in semi-embarrassment. Sanji laughed at your reaction and leaned in to collect his own glass, placing the cigarette between his lips and inhaling the nicotine ridden object while closing his eyes. As he held the smoke in his chest, he took a small sip of the rum cocktail and held it on his tongue. He released a long breath as he focussed on the burn your cocktail left on his tongue as his senses became engulfed by the flavours you presented before him.
“You’re a bit late, Chef,” Sanji exclaimed with a small smirk, “apparently we’re already married.”
You laughed at his comment, picking up the cigarette and drawing in a long breath while bringing the liquid to your lips and taking a sip. You exhaled the smoke through your nose while you gulped back the dark contents and savoured the burn it left behind.
You and Sanji exchanged glances now and again while you continued to aid Jacob in packing down the bar while refilling the tankards belonging to the chefs before you. You placed your glass down behind the bar while you wiped own the bar for the hundredth time this particular shift before removing the till and locking it, placing it in the safe below the bar.
“And I’m done,” you heard Jacob say next to you, “I’m cutting Carne off, by the way. No more for him.”
You laughed at his comment while welcoming him into an embrace as you felt the relief of completing a successful shift with your coworker.
“Well done, Jacob,” you laughed with him, finally feeling a tiredness overcome your body. Jacob held you there slightly before bringing you in to murmur quietly to you.
“I’ve decided I’m covering your split-shift tomorrow,” he smiled at you. You widened your eyes in shock, a large smile widening over your cheeks.
“You’re joking,” you exclaimed in delight.
“I am absolutely not,” he again murmured to you, “now go get your man.”
You laughed at him before playfully hitting his arm in response to his comment. You then looked over his shoulder to see Sanji looking at you with a vacant expression while engaging with Zeff.
“I’ve already marked it on the roster and signed you out,” he further clarified while exiting the bar to join the chefs for his knock off.
“You’re amazing, Jacob,” you called after him before turning to walk back over to Zeff and Sanji.
Zeff began rising from his place on the stool, and turned to exit the bar.
“Heading in, Chef?” you asked him with a smile on your face.
“Yes, love,” he responded with an exhausted expression on his face. You reached forward and patted his arm gently.
“I’ll see you tomorrow for inventory,” you chirped lightly at him, extending familial warmth to him.
“You absolutely will not,” he growled, “Jacob is covering for you. I’m going to teach him inventory. Enjoy your day off.”
You laughed at him before he dismissed you to make your way over to Sanji who was resting his elbows against the bar while waiting for you.
“Finally,” he exclaimed when you joined his field of vision, prompting you to tilt your head to the side coyly.
You retrieved your glass containing the complex drink you made earlier and brought it to your lips, knocking back the remainder of the liquid.
“Finally,” you confirmed with him after swallowing the flame-like, smoky liquid. He looked down at the bar bashfully before returning his gaze to you.
“When do you start tomorrow? I should let you turn in,” he said, a small amount of sorrow expressed in his tone.
“As it so happens,” you began while reaching for a bottle of sangiovese and collecting two wine glasses, “I’m off tomorrow.”
Immediately Sanji widened his eyes and extended a solid grin your way.
“So, I can keep you up past your bed time, then?” he asked you playfully, his grin turning into a small smirk at the corner of his lips.
“Honey,” you taunted him with a mischievous smirk, leaning your body over the bar to bring your face closer to his, “you can keep me up all night long.”
His playful glint fled from his face as he shifted his gaze between your eyes, flittering to your partially parted lips in complete silence at your comment. All playfulness seemingly fell from your face in turn, unsure as to if your comment was crossing some unwritten line between you and your coworker. The words truthfully fell from your lips faster than your brain could keep up with them, allowing your little proximity crush to possess your lips as they spurted those flirtatious words.
He suddenly removed his elbows from the bar and brought his hands to cradle your face between them and hungrily placed his lips against yours. You heard him sharply inhale through his nose as he opened his mouth to deepen the connection shared between you. You let out a small squeal at the passion of his actions and widened your eyes in shock at the haste of his sudden expression of desire. He held your face in the palms of his hands before snaking them to the back of your neck with a light moan as he gently massaged his fingers into the hairline at the nape of your neck. And as soon as the connection was brought between you, he pushed himself away from you and released his hands from behind your neck. His newly reddened lips were parted and his eyes were wide seemingly as in shock as you were at the wild intensity that his body voiced to you.
“I am so sorry,” he spluttered apologetically at you, refusing to bring his off-guard gaze to meet yours. You bit your lip and looked at the bar, still in shock from the kiss you shared with him.
It felt like a full century had passed between you, although in reality it had only been a few seconds of uninterrupted, awkward silence. You turned your head and softened your gaze to look at the young sous-chef in front of you, as he continued to fixate his sights on the polished wooden bar in front of you both. Partially fuelled by the flaming liquid you consumed earlier and the knowledge that Sanji potentially returned your formerly unrequited infatuation with him, you mustered up some courage to perform something you never thought you would.
You hoisted yourself on top of the empty bar in front of him, tucking your knees beneath you to sit on top of your calves. He snapped out of his trance and brought all of his attention to your actions. You reached down and grasped his jaw between your hands, lifting him to plant his feet on the ground rather than remaining sitting atop the wooden stool. You allowed your hair to cascade over your shoulder as you leant down and brought your lips against his own for the second time tonight.
It was Sanji’s turn to be in complete shock as you began to physically return the kiss he planted against your lips moments prior. You laced your fingers in his hair and raked it away from his face while tilting his jaw up for you to deepen the kiss. You rolled your head slightly while teasing the entrance of his mouth by flickering his bottom lip with your tongue.
The small flick of your tongue seemed to break his trance as he reached up and wrapped his bare arms around your thighs and hoisted you off the top of the bar; prompting a delighted gasp to escape from between your lips. In one swell movement, he sat your body on his lap as he took a seat once more atop the bar stool. He moved his arms from beneath your legs to allow you to relax now, fully sat on his lap, choosing to embrace your lower back with his right hand to secure your body against his own. His left hand moved to the space between your shoulder blades and pulled you flush against his torso as he moaned into the kiss.
You felt him smile against your lips as he moved his own tongue out to flick playfully at your own. You gasped at that small flicker, using your tongue to move beneath his and caress the small piercing located beneath his tongue you saw earlier this morning. He moaned in response to you finding the small piercing, which prompted you to laugh slightly into the kiss.
He stood once more, gently lowering your body to your feet without breaking the kiss. You moved your hands down to his neck, successfully locating his navy tie hanging loosely from his neck. You successfully laced your hand around it and used it to lever him closer against you to maintain some semblance of control in this completely unforeseen turn of events.
Sanji grinned into the kiss before being the first to pull away from your grip. He looked at you through half-lidded eyelashes with a look of pure adoration overcoming his features. You attempted to bring his lips against yours for a third time, but he stopped you from continuing your assaulting flurry of passionate kisses. You widened your eyes at his actions, again assuming you somehow misread the situation unfolding between you.
“I’m sorry, Sanji,” you gasped out in shock, apologising for your sudden intimate outburst.
“No apologies necessary, princess,” he replied with a bashful smile, “I was very much enjoying our little kiss and I want nothing more than to kiss you again.”
You quirked your head to the side and released his tie from your restraining grasp, opting to lace them behind his neck instead. He continued to hold your lower back in an embrace, tracing small circles into your skin.
“What’s stopping you from kissing me again now?” you asked him, creasing your brows in confusion but continuing to smile at the blonde chef. He exhaled a light laugh before nodding his chin to the corner of the bar.
You shook your head before following his gaze to meet with the beady and ever watchful eyes of the Den-Den Mushi Snail Zeff had placed in the corner of the bar earlier in the year to catch potential thieves from stealing liquor and berry from the till. You froze against him, prompting him to laugh again at you before caressing your cheek to return your gaze to seek out his own.
“That was watching the whole time?” you hissed through gritted teeth at him.
“I only just noticed it myself,” he took a deep breath through his nose and held it slightly, “just before you decided to crawl over the bar, to be completely honest.”
You groaned and pressed your forehead against Sanji’s chest in an attempt to shield you from further embarrassment. You felt him smile as he pressed his lips to the side of your head and held you in an embrace.
“C’mon,” he said, capturing your chin with his thumb and index finger and bringing your eyes to meet his, “let’s go to the kitchen. We’ll break in to the old man’s office, take back any pictures the bloody thing took and I’ll cook you anything you want.”
You smiled warmly at him and pressed your lips against his in what was intended to be a partially chaste kiss. Instead; he held your chin firmly and continued the kiss, chasing your lips as you intended to pull away from him with his own. You smiled against his lips before patting his chest to signal for him to break from your lips.
“Enough,” you emphatically scolded him in a playful whisper before pulling away from his embrace and briskly making your way towards your boss’s office.
“You’ve been teasing me over these past few years, what do you expect?” he called after you with a teasing tone. You chose not to acknowledge his taunt, which caused him to bite his lip before twirling his piercing between his teeth and follow closely behind you.

It’s late, but I wasn’t about to let Tome’s day go by! I present: so many words.
Summary: This is not a psychic union. It’s an employee union.
Word Count: 2,005 (…yeah)
look for the union label…
The more Tome thinks about it, the better the idea sounds. She isn’t sure what benefits members of the Sun Psychic Union get, but they have to be good ones if they can keep all those superpowered psychics around. If they’re worth paying hard-earned dues over instead of going freelance, then it has to be a top-tier organization. And it’s one she can’t join.
It’s not like Tome doesn’t like the job she has, she wouldn’t work for any other psychic in Seasoning City! Reigen could pay her a little better for all her hard work, snacks don’t grow on trees—except for that one weird month with…spinach?—, but she’s not trying to leave. A union’s good backup if she ever does need something, someday. If she was a psychic, she’d have to join the Sun union, so if you think about it, this is basically going along with the rules.
Except there’s no union for employees of a psychic or the invaluable backup work people like her and Mr. Serizawa do. Like filing or…or billing receipts for curse-breaking massages. Or going out on cases in the evening at the beginning of the school year.
They deserve a union. And if they’re the ones in charge, they can choose their own benefits, like better pay, or days off, or more snacks, not asking if Peppercorn expects her to do homework. Reasonable stuff for a Spirits & Such exclusive union. Probably. She isn’t sure.
But she does have the office to herself today and the other option is working on her history homework…so she has all time she needs to look up anything. Everything! Using Reigen’s computer is fine too, it’s for the good of the workers.
All of Tome’s sources agree, the first step to a successful union is getting your coworkers on your side. When you have three of them, that’s gonna be a very good thing or a very bad one. She decides to focus on the positives as she takes the familiar route back to Salt Middle School.
She’s not exact sure what happened between the city almost breaking to pieces—again—and now, but when she spots the brief member of her old club, it seems like it’s been…good. Mob smiles at her and waves backs when she flags him down leaving the school yard.
She knows how much Reigen means to him and that Mob’s not really an employee anymore, but if she can get him on her side, she can convince anyone.
“A union?” Mob looks carefully over her printed list of employee benefits.
Tome takes a deep breath. She knows she got wild about aliens and it wasn’t really about aliens and the alien hunt almost didn’t turn out well and Inukawa went missing for ten days, and maybe she misses the structure of the Telepathy Club a little, but. There isn’t much to do at Peppercorn yet.
“I like it. I think you should have one,” Mob says, handing the paper back before Tome can lay out her ten steps to union success.
There’s something in the way he says it, not angry, but…whole in a way she hasn’t heard from him before. She thinks it’s good for him.
“Really?” she asks before course-correcting. She did not expect it to be that easy. “I mean, thank you for your support, Mob. Ah, Shigeo.”
It feels more like him to call him that for some reason, even if he looks surprised she calls him that too.
Once Shigeo’s out of sight, Tome lets out a long, winded sigh out into the twilight she didn’t know she had in her. Wipes a bit of sweat off her palms. Okay, she did it. She actually did it. One down, two to go.
She’s gonna start a union.
“Why is it on mobgle again?” Tome overhears Reigen mutter to himself, making one of those weird faces at his laptop.
She to tries to make it look like filing is the most interesting thing in the world.
The thing is Mr. Serizawa is a really nice guy, kind of a pushover sometimes if Tome’s honest, but she still brings Shigeo with her to talk to him. Just for more proof that this is a serious offer.
All the suggestions said it was better to talk to coworkers outside of work, so that’s what she does, brings Shigeo along and catches up with her other coworker about two blocks away from the office.
“A…union?”
“Like the Sun Union,” she cuts in this time. “We’ll have benefits and if we don’t want to do something, we can use collective bargaining power. So we can tell the boss ‘no.’ Really stand up to him!”
Mr. Serizawa gets a kind of look on his face.
“Like if the union, us,” she pushes on, nodding to Shigeo to include him, “votes that we’re not going into a sewer after a spirit, we won’t have to.”
She figures Mr. Serizawa can agree they don’t want to do that again.
“I don’t know…” he hedges, sounding almost sorry to tell her. “I never thought I’d have a job as good as working at Spirits & Such.”
“There’s strength in a union, Mr. Serizawa. We can make important decisions for the future of the company. Better pay! Better hours! And–and a new desk!”
He does look more interested at that, a flicker of doubt in his eye. And Tome jumps on it, slamming her fist to her open palm, a familiar excitement coming up.
“Those are working conditions, Mr. Serizawa! We can put that in our demands! And if we don’t get it? We strike!”
“A new chair would be nice,” Mr. Serizawa says, more to himself that to her but she’ll take it.
“Shigeo’s joined too,” she sweetens the deal. “We outnumber the boss three to one and we’ll get you that chair!”
She thinks Shigeo nods, but the unionizing articles said eye contact was important.
“…I don’t think he’ll fire us,” Mr. Serizawa says, considering.
“He won’t,” Shigeo agrees.
“That’s the spirit!”
They only need part of a workforce to get a union and she has three out of three. She knew her counselor was lying when she called Tome too forceful.
The problem is sometimes it’s harder to have Mr. Serizawa as part of the union before they’re—she’s—ready to list their requests than not having him in it. Something about keeping the (temporary) secret makes him more nervous around Reigen than usual. That’d be great as a friend, but it’s exhausting as a union president.
She can’t say Reigen’s noticed yet though. Probably because Mr. Serizawa looks kinda generally haunted sometimes, but she’s had two weird nightmares about it already.
“I want to join your union.”
Halfway across a crosswalk, a list of possible wage increase bargaining tactics in her hand, Tome gets ambushed by Shigeo’s little brother. Well, ambushed might not be the right word, but she does yell and almost lose her list.
“…you worked for Spirits & Such?” she asks once they’ve gotten to the other side of the street.
Reigen’s filing system before Mr. Serizawa was strange enough to be in French or something and she doesn’t know how he remembers to pay his taxes, but he always wrote down when they had any expenses.
Ritsu grimaces. “I…interned. Will I be allowed to join or not?”
…well, numbers are numbers.
Tome feels like she’s gotten the politest mugging in the country.
“You know this won’t work, don’t you?”
“You don’t qualify as an employee,” Tome says instead of answering the only spirit around here who hasn’t been exorcised. If she says it through a mouthful of chips, that’s fine. She doesn’t have to be polite right now.
Reigen’s out dealing with the office’s owner about a window getting blown up mid-exorcism and Mr. Serizawa’s gone to pick up a drink order. She figured this would make the best time to put the last touches on their requirements to keep the union from going on strike, but now she has an old ghost telling her she’s doomed for failure.
She’s heard that and it never stuck! Thinking about it, she should hit him with that net again.
No. She has a better idea, grinning and talking around another handful of chips. “You’re mad cause I didn’t ask you to join, aren’t you?”
Ekubo huffs, forming tiny legs and sitting down mid-air. “I’m the reason this place lasted as long as it has. Reigen wouldn’t even be alive if it wasn’t for me.”
Tome guesses she believes that with how much trouble Reigen gets into. Someone had to have tried to kill him before.
“Fine. Wanna join the union?” If this doesn’t do anything else, Tome can say she’s part of the only union in town with a ghost.
“You don’t stand a chance. Yes.”
Tome’s been a class president already and she held it together, more or less, for most of that year. She even brought Shigeo in, more or less, and that got her to this huge supernatural world most people don’t even notices. She knows what she wants and she goes after it! That’s why she’s here now.
She’s even had input from all of the other employees, the things they think are important like calling ahead and someone else who agrees about school nights. Hell, she cut her snack demands to fit what she guesses is the total S&S budget, all for the good of the union.
It’s something, right here in her hands and important and she doesn’t miss her friends who are still in middle school as much with her coworkers waiting at her signaland she can do this, bursting through the front door of the one and only Spirits & Such Consultation.
Reigen almost climbs up his desk with the door slam, but Tome’s not going let that stop her.
“We are officially announcing the formation of the Spirits & Such union as agreed by all employees, part timers, interns—”
“Interns?” Reigen squawks.
“—and freelance spirit consultants. Here are our requirements.”
She puts the hard copy down on the desk, between her and Mr. Serizawa it even has the company logo on it. And a shiny border, she paid to have it printed up herself.
Besides it’ll give Reigen the opportunity to follow along. Tome has the terms memorized.
They need clearer hours and leeway if they can’t make it! A competitive wage, or a better division of goods for services rendered!
“This is not a livable wage, shishou,” Shigeo adds about here in the speech. She thinks Reigen looks proud through the confusion.
And there’s the value of their labor! She and Mr. Serizawa could work other places! He has superpowers! She could focus on high school!
There’s the overtime, they have no overtime pay! No school night double time! A new chair!
Tome hasn’t felt this energized in months.
“And,” she says, winding down and half-out of breath and so, so proud, “if these terms are not agreeable, we’re going on strike.”
“Oh,” Reigen says. And goes through one of those things where he goes through several possible faces before landing on one. He puts the list back down. “I don’t agree to those terms.”
“But I—” slips out of Tome’s mouth before she can stop it. She’s not going to get upset like last time. She won’t. If they have to strike, and she has to apologize to her coworkers for that, so be it.
“I’m not agreeing to all that,” Reigen says, punctuating his words by pointing at various spots. “Look, there it says I have to give six hours notice and even I don’t know that sometimes. The supernatural doesn’t stop for peoples schedules. And here, we don’t have the budget for that type of raise in this economy.
“So you’re going to have to stay here and negotiate, Kurata.”
“Negotiate?”
“You’re the one in charge of this union, aren’t you?”
Tome grins and pulls a chair up to the desk.

Shino can't take a lot of medication or even eat spicy food. In any no-ninja-shit AU you would have to give Shino a lot of food and drug allergies to mirror his insects' sensitivities.
I've done quite a lot of research into what foods are harmful/repellent to insects and especially weevils, so here's some potential problem items for any version of Shino.
Allicin (repellent/insecticide): alliums such as garlic and onion
Nicotine (extremely neurotoxic): No smoking!!
Caffeine (neurotoxin): Coffee, chocolate, yerba mate, guarana, tea tree (includes white, yellow, oolong, black, pu-erh, and green, especially matcha, tea)
Capsaicin (repellent): all peppers excluding bell pepper, black peppercorn
Thujone (repellent/antifeedant/insecticide): wormwood, mugwort, oregano, common sage, some mints
Eugenol (powerful insecticide): cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, basil, bay leaf
Eucalyptol (repellent/insecticide): marijuana, camphor laurel, galangal, tea tee, ginger
My personal headcanon is that certain members of the Aburame clan have their own vices and, though they really shouldn't, breed their beetles to tolerate them better. Shibi has been known to smoke a pipe, much to Shino's dismay, and yet, hypocrite that he is, Shino drinks decaf. He'll rationalize it saying that it's not as bad as full-caff, but it's still caffeine.

An old design for a peppercorn tree spirit. it was for an original project, but an idea still in the same vein as sso's magic horses, where it had both a true/magic form and normie form

Game Assets Notes
These are plants shown in Dragon Age but aren't named in universe, just in their model files or through identification of the textures. Since most filler plant textures are just that of real world plants.
**NOTE:** When I mention they are not the known name of any plant, this comes with the caveat of being popular common names. Common names are highly variable and inconsistent. They depend on regional knowledge and association. Some travel farther than others. Common names are also not reliable identifiers.
Acacia: Black Wood ~ Note: Black Wood is a type of acacia. Both acacia and black wood are named assets.
Artichoke ~ Note: Identification comes from asset name, the artichoke flower is used as ornamentation of a box.
Banyan Tree
Boxwood ~ A type of shrub, identification comes from asset name.
Bradford Pear ~ Their fruits are edible, however their flowers are known to emit a smell akin to rotting meat. Identification comes from asset name.
Calla Lily ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters.
Cattail ~ Note: Seen through out DAO and DAI, identification comes from asset name.
Coleus ~ Note: Not named but identified by the texture used. It is seen in Val Royeaux planters and in the Frostback Basin.
Crape Myrtle
Cypress: Italian Cypress, Topiary Cypress ~ Note: In terms of the Italian Cypress, in world it wouldl likely be called the "Antivan Cypress" given that Antiva is pulling from Italian culture, food, environments, and other inspirational elements. Cypress is a plant that is named in canon.
Daikon Radish ~ Note: Found on Dennet's farm, identification comes from asset name.
Dogwood
Elephant Ear ~ Note: Foliage found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from asset name.
Fade Berry
Fern: Red Fern, Sword Fern ~ Note: The red fern isn't a real plant and therefore can be considered unique to Thedas. In contrast the sword fern is a real plant. Identification comes from the asset name for both of these ferns.
Forest Clover
Foxleaf ~ Note: This is another plant that is not real, no plant has this common name as far as I could find.
Gasbloom ~ Note: Seen in the Arbor Wilds, the Frostback Basin some elven ruins, and the elven ruins of multiplayer levels. Their identification comes from the asset name. There are two versions of the texture the "fixed" version is used in JoH dlc and thus explains the difference in appearance. This is not the name of a known mushroom.
Hero Tree
Palm: Curly Palm, Fan Palm ~ Note: Both palms are seen in the Frostback Basin, both are identified by their named assets.
Pear Cactus ~ Note: Found in the Frostback Basin, identification comes from the asset name.
Pine: Chir Pine
Ponga Tree ~ Note: Also known as the 'Tree Fern'. This is the tree you see in Val Royeaux garden as coming from Par Vollen, and throughout the Arbor Wilds.
Redwood ~ Note: Identified by the name of the file asset. Found in the Winter Palace, Exalted Plains, and on multiplayer maps.
Snapdragon
Trex
Waterweed ~ Note: In real life this is an entire genus not one particular plant. Though the six plants in this genus do share the common name of waterweed.
White Birch
Witchhazel
Additional Notes and Trivia
Ironwood - Unclear if this is an alternative name, the actual name of the plant, or both.
Morel - This mushroom is inferred due to the existence of Blighted Morel. However it is not explicitly specified there is a non-blighted morel.
Sponge Root - Though canonical as it is mentioned and shown in World of Thedas vol. 2 on pg. 138 with a collection of deep mushroom and surface mushroom illustrations. This mushroom was cut twice from Inquisition. It was cut from the base game as a craftable, it had a much different appearance from its final design, and then it was cut again from Trespasser. It does however still make an appearance in Inquisition as the inventory icon for Crystal Grace.
Unnamed Glowing Mushroom Is mentioned in multiplayer when there are two Lukas playing.
Unnamed Mushroom These brown mushrooms are seen in the Fallow Mire and the Frostback Basin. They are shown in two different sizes ranging from shorter than a dwarf to taller than one.
There is one unlisted mushroom, its assets is named "red mushroom" and thus is identified by textures. These is not a canon name but is included for completeness. Amanita Muscaria: More commonly know as fly agaric or fly amanita, the red top with white spots is an iconic in its imagery. You will find large swaths of these mushrooms in the Frostback Basin. Their assets is named "Red Mushroom".
Winterberry is a real plant. However, from what we see in DA2, it does not the same as the plant we have in the real world, just a shared common name.
Wormroot is another real plant name. However, due to the description in The Calling, it does not seem to be the same plant. In The Calling it is used to treat the venom of a giant spider. The real world plant is used to treat parasites in the gut and does not seem to hold any shared uses in folk lore, folk medicine, or western medicine practices.

WIP: a honeymoon fic teaser for @deliciousnutcomputer for such patience :)
tommy x lizzie; drinking/inebriation, friction, very unreliable (drunk) narrator XD
(it might not seem it but this one will have the most terribly sweet ending i can possibly imagine)
Day 1:
5:00 PM: Arrive at Victoria Embankment in London to board the Orient Express. 6:00 PM: Departure from London towards Dover. Enjoy dinner in the dining car. Socialise in the lounge and bar cars.  Live music and conversation. Admire the passing countryside and towns as the train continues its journey. During the evening, compartments will be prepared for sleeping with the seating converted into luxury beds.
*
‘There’s fingerprints.’
Lizzie looked up from her plate. Quail at perfect moistness, green peppercorn. Some kind of broccoli sliced into the thinnest of curls, transparent as if green glass, or a museum’s pressed dissection of a small tree. Never particularly been intrigued by the idea of matching wine to meal, one of those things the upper classes pretended was real but wasn’t just to create another barrier, Lizzie learned otherwise: something about the way the white wine, selected for her meal especially, that made everything taste so much better. Hadn’t been the first sip, but layered, as if taste was something that could build over time, acquired, and she was in the thick of complementary layered bliss on her tongue right now.
The green-eyed sommelier explained it to her with a masculine grace and an attention she’d felt warmly gratified by, as he’d seemed to recognise instantly Tommy wouldn’t pay attention, and instead poured his French-accented charm onto her instead. She’d listened, rapt, and drank everything he gave her.
As if giving a toast, Tommy raised his tumbler to the burnished chandeliers that gave the dining car such atmosphere, frowning.
‘See?  Fingerprints.’
‘Are they your fingerprints?’
‘Course they’re not mine. Look, there’s specks of dirt in this glass.’
‘Tommy.’
Now he was sniffing the contents. ‘Is this scotch? Taste it for me. They’ve given me scotch. In someone else’s fucking unwashed glass.’
‘Can you please get your glass out of my face—’
‘Where’s this bar car? I’m not taking this.’
How was she supposed to know if he didn’t? ‘Given there’s only two directions you could possibly go, I’m sure you’ll find it.’
Tommy gave her an unreadable look, untucked his chair, and stalked out the back end of the dining car, holding the glass out as if it was some dripping bloody organ. Then he hit his shoulder on the doorframe as he passed and paused to glare at it.
Lizzie looked at her plate to avoid seeing if he'd start a fight with mostly inanimate architecture. She ate another careful mouthful of quail with a slice of broccoli folded onto the gold fork by way of the gold knife. There were still three forks and three knives on the table next to her plate, and three spoons in different sizes arranged at the top of the gold-rimmed plate. She assumed one set had been for the prawn thing in the glasses Tommy waved away before the waiters could approach their table, which she forgave because a disgust for shellfish couldn’t be argued with; another for the soup course he’d looked at and sent back without checking with her, which she didn’t forgive when she’d not even the chance to see what it was. But she wasn’t sure about the final cutlery set because it wasn’t meant for dessert, was it?
She'd lost her taste for sweet things, anyway. Now she would never know.
Five minutes later, Tommy crossed through again to exit to the front of the car, still holding the offending glass, giving her a passing frown.
Lizzie looked at his plate, steak with the slightest blush of pink at the centre; she could tell because he’d sliced it thin as the broccoli, precisely, end to end, complaining it wasn’t cooked through, didn’t they know uncooked meat gave people worms or worse, he’d had better from a gutted squirrel at a fucking street stall grilled over charcoal on a stick. He’d pushed all the potatoes off the plate in the process of his slicing, exactly like Charlie at his petulant worst, staining the tablecloth.
Having drained her glass of impeccably selected white wine staring at his plate, Lizzie waved the waiter over to fill her up again. The couple at the table next to her looked at her, not exactly aghast, but politely puzzled. Possibly you weren’t supposed to click repeatedly at a waiter like that in first class. Possibly you weren’t supposed to even call them. Maybe it was all done through some strange set of social signals no one was allowed to explain, because you had to be born into it.
No one seemed to stare at Tommy like that no matter what he did, though, so men must have a free pass. Either that or he’d found a better book of etiquette than she ever had and not deigned to share.
‘You might as well leave the bottle. Are you allowed to do that?’
‘Of course, madam.’
‘Ta. Thank you, I mean. Thank you.’
‘At your service, madam.’ From the cow-eyes, he looked like he wanted to kiss the back of her hand. Surely that wasn’t reasonable? Lizzie looked away, slightly disturbed, and the couple at the table across offered her near-identical conciliatory smiles, sweetly, which made her realise they weren’t a couple but rather brother and sister, and that was perhaps an invitation to participate in some of that much lauded social conversation listed on their itinerary.
In the corner of the car, on a small elevated triangular stage, a trio of young violinists set up quietly. Two women with hair piled high in identical crowns-of-braids and one man, dark skinned.  At some unseen cue, they all began to play, ethereal and compelling. Lizzie thought distantly of Charlie’s practice, wondered if he’d keep his attention on it long enough to become this good.  Violins were amazing instruments. Having mostly filled her days and a good few nights of marriage so far with various entertainments now available to her, including orchestral performances, Lizzie had decided violins might be her favourite. Not just because of Charlie, but because even his faltering practice made the instrument sound almost human in some way, even if with him it was more crying than singing. Now, in the hands of masters, the instruments pulled her into another place where baby new potatoes weren’t rocking gently on the tablecloth with the motion of the train.
Frisson, that’s what it was. Lifting her from the mundanity of having endured without comment the now hours-long litany of Mr Thomas Shelby’s complaints of raw steak and dirty glasses and the station queues and the traffic on the way in and how could she forget her fucking passport all while pretending he hadn’t forgotten his and the stupid imperfect and fundamentally flawed itinerary the latest useless office lackey put together for this whole affair, the crammed luggage and the lack of information on the weather that would be awaiting them so they couldn’t even pack clothes properly as if he'd ever wear anything other than a bloody three-piece in public and the time this would take away from important business and she’d better be happy and why France, Lizzie, why fucking France, when he’d been the one who picked it—
Nothing was left in the bottle. Lizzie realised it was late enough the car was nearly empty, offending plate and potatoes cleared, and she was almost liquid in her chair, suddenly conscious of how she must look. Eyes half-lidded, face soft, listening and looking, free hand curled at her chest as if wounded, and a total degradation of posture.
The young violinist caught Lizzie’s eye and winked at her, inclined his head so briefly towards the rear end of the car. A lifted eyebrow, in enquiry and offering. He put an extra little effort into his bow arm, the tilt of his chin, and held her eye in a particularly meaningful way.
‘Do you want to fuck me,’ Lizzie asked the empty chair opposite her, jarring and vicious and in her poshest attempt at the King’s English.
The chair didn’t answer.
Then she went to find the bar car or her bed, whatever showed up first in the grand linear journey that was navigating a train where apparently everyone except for her husband actually did, in fact, want to fuck her, blaming her sway and the nearly-rolled ankle along the way on the motion of the carriage.

In your experience, what is the most accurate form of divination? Not your favorite, but the one that gives consistently correct answers.
What is a spell you seldom cast but always keep the ingredients on hand?
What’s your go to indulgence? Like your “I am incredible and deserve everything I want so I’m buying myself a treat” indulgence.
If a tree falls in the woods, and no one is around to hear it, does it feel lonely and unheard?
-Rowan :)
Of the methods I use my bone collection has never given me a bad reading. Whether I'm reading for myself or for someone else it's just so detailed and intuitive.
I don't cast a lot of baneful magic (though I do love to theory craft curses), but I love spicy food and cook with a lot of peppers and peppercorns, which are great for curses and hexes.
Usually either food or clothes. I love good food and when I'm either rewarding myself for something going well, or consoling myself for a rough day a special meal or sack is common. "Special treat" food was something I grew up with, and it's helped me re-establish a better relationship with food after the worst of my eating disorder. Clothes are just that I like pretty slow fashion clothes and they are expensive!
The mycelia hear it fall, and spread the news so that the forest may mourn.

Chapter 21 LFT
Sanji finally let Zoro's strong calloused hand go. He had enjoyed holding it. He began to look through the drink menu. There was a pale blue cocktail that looked delicious called North concoction, it was a mix of alcohol from both the north and east.
“Let me guess, you're getting sake?” Sanji looked up from the menu to tease the man in front of him.
“Yup, let me take guess your getting some snobby wine,”
“Nope, I'm getting a cocktail,” Sanji put his menu down and pointed to it. “Looks good.”
“Hello, I will be your waiter today. Our specials for the day are Catch of the Day, which is a grilled Ahi with watercress cream sauce with a choice of white or brown rice, house vegetables, and manilla clam. A Seafood Duo: Deep fried Opelu with lomi tomato with Furi panko Ahi ribs. And a Miso black cod with Kabayaki with a choice of white or brown rice and bok choy, what can I get you to drink? ”
“Sake,” Zoro rudely grunted at the man.
“I'll have the north connection please, also can we get Angry Ahi Dip and the Fish Bites to start,” Sanji ordered, glancing at the appetizers. He was more excited for the first one, he loves spicy and seafood, which reminded him that he needed to pick up stuff for kimchi tomorrow morning.
“All right, I'll be right back with those drinks,” Thire waiter left.
“Here order me cook,” Zoro huffed putting his menu down. “Your the one who knows food,”
“Lazy ass,” Sanji grumbled, happy to pick out something for the sentient moss sitting across from him. “Hmm, I think you'd like the Miso black cod. It is on your list,”
“Sure, it won't be as good as yours, but it will be fine,” Zoro shrugged.
“All right,” Sanji could help but to preen under the praise.
“Here is your drinks. Your apitzers should be out shortly. Are you ready to order?”
“Yes, we will take the Grilled Peppercorn Swordfish and the Miso black cod,” Sanji held out the menus.
“I'm so sorry the miso was just cut from the menu,”
“Its fine if it was Eighty sixed these things happen,” Sanji glanced at the menu once again. “How about the Furikake Pan-Seared Ahi,”
“All right, I'll get your apitzers,” They took the menus and left.
Sanji took a sip of hid cocktail humming in apirsion licking his lips before take a larger sip. He watched as Zoro drank from the bottle of sake, ignoring the glass.
“Dam that's good shit, my master back home liked this, one time me and some of the other boys stole some of his sake and drank it under one of the large trees. We got caught of course but I developed a taste for the stuff,”
“Ahh an alcoholic from an early age how'd your parents feel about that?” Sanji teased him take a drink from his cocktail.
“Nah, I don't have any. My dad died when I was eight so I was raised in the dojo with a bunch of other boys and the dojo masters daughter,”
“Sorry to hear that, how did you get into bounty hunting?” Sanji asked him taking another sip.
“Here are your apitzers,” The waiter returned, placing plates in front of them. “Can I get you a refill?” He asked, looking at Sanji, who looked down at their almost empty glass.
“Sure,” He didn't realize how fast how drank that cocktail it was
“I left the village when I was sixteen after hearing of Mihawk, and one night I was camping out and someone thought it was a good idea to rob me,” Zoro grabbed a fish bite dipping it into the aioli before popping it into his mouth. “Mm you should make these, anyway I stopped him, tied him up and dropped him off at the Marines, turns out he was wanted so I got some money and headed straight for a bar. Drank most of the money and went back the next morning to look at the bontys and six months later I met Johnny and Yosaku,”
Sanji laughed and finished his cocktail before taking a wonton chip and dipped it into the dip. It was spicy, a little sour and salty, absolutely delicious. He tried the fish bite as well, Zoro was right he would need to recreate both of these dishes later.

#11 Cinnamon
"Let me handle this," Bilbo whispered to Gloin, who immediately looked offended.  The dwarves scurrying past them in the ruins of Erebor's entryway paid them no mind, dodging around them with whatever they happened to be carrying.  "Please."  After a growling noise from his supposed 'guard' was heard, Bilbo took it for assent and moved over to the merchant who had wandered in.  Shouting in Khuzdul could be heard in the distance but Bilbo's focus was entirely on the merchant.
"Greetings, greetings," the hobbit said with a sunny smile.  "Wonderful to see a merchant make this trip!  Where do you hail from, and what do you bring?"  The merchant was wearing clothing that resembled that of Gondor, but the trousers were cut a bit too loose and wide in the leg, the sleeves a bit too flowing for the city.  Brilliant white teeth flashed against olive skin and a beard that wouldn't have shamed a young dwarf.
"Lucky indeed to find customers so rare!  I came to the Town of the Lakes on my way to Rhûn but nobody told me so much had changed.  Where is your father, young one?  Or..." the merchant turned in confusion to a glaring Gloin, doing his best to loom over the man who was easily a foot taller.  Bilbo did his best to keep his internal sigh from showing on his face.
"I am fully grown, I assure you; I am a hobbit, of a race from the far West, not common in these parts.  We are smaller than men and dwarves, but no less capable, thank you very much."  He forced a smile back onto his face with determination.  "So again I ask; where from and what are your goods?  We need many things within the Mountain."  Gloin's surprised cough made Bilbo want to kick him but true to his word, the dwarf stayed quiet.  The merchant's smile grew impossibly wider.
"My apologies, good sir, my apologies!  My ignorance was not intended to cause offence!  My name is Khisritu, of the Purku people of Vasha, which you northerners call Harad, but I have been on the road for many many moons.  My home is the wagon you see behind me," he said with a flourish, "and my family are these others who assist me.  Wonders I bring, from the markets of the South, and from Gondor itself.  Iron needles, sharp as a thorn, and cloth of many colors!  Thread so fine it would scarce move a hair, and twine fit to wrap even stone have I, and spices of the..." Bilbo interrupted in spite of himself.
"Spices?  Which spices?"  Gloin groaned and this time Bilbo did kick him, if only just.  The merchant nodded knowingly and pulled out a small chest which he unlocked.
"The bark of the zhuzhu tree of the jungles of Tukku," he said with a flourish, producing a stack of curled reddish bark.  Bilbo's mouth immediately began to water.  "I think here it is called cimmanon, yes?  I also have the dried flowers of the khurimun tree, and several casks of strong black peppercorns."  The smell of cinnamon and cloves began to spread, and Bilbo nodded decisively.
"We'll take all your spices, certainly.  Cloth and thread as well.  In fact, we'll take all the nonmetal items you have.  Name your price."  Gloin's eyes were bugging out a bit at this apparent refusal to entertain a proper bargaining process, but Bilbo simply smiled. The merchant was all but rubbing his hands, though narrowed eyes showed a bit of suspicion.  "It's been difficult, you see," Bilbo said, lowering his voice as though speaking in confidence.  "We have so little left in the mountain that isn't gold.  That, though, we have in abundance!  So much gold.  So by all means, bring what you have!"  Cutting his eyes at Gloin, whose complexion was beginning to resemble the cinnamon bark, he went on.  "In fact, if you meet anyone else on the road with goods to sell, send them our way if you please!  We're happy to pay for what we need."  The dwarf stomped off to sit on the lip of the broken fountain, glaring at Bilbo as the hobbit negotiated a price that was eyewateringly high.  He paid it with a cheerful smile, though, and practically gave the merchant a cask of salt (Erebor's salt mines and storage warehouse remained unharmed by the dragon and they had more salt at this point than food to salt with it).
Several hours later, having overseen the transfer and payment personally, Bilbo wandered back into the mountain.  Gloin was grumbling at him the moment they passed out of earshot of the merchant, who was loudly thanking his gods for their favor.
"Just what in the name of Mahal's ballsack was that?" Gloin growled.  Bilbo smiled secretively and looked away, twirling his courting braid around one finger.
"Tell me, Gloin, what's the most important thing to Erebor?"  Bilbo asked.  As Gloin drew a breath to answer, he quickly added "I mean long term, not just the clean up and repairs."
Gloin hesitated for a moment.  "Trade," he finally said.  "But you paid that man easily five times what those things were worth!  It was sheer theft!  Why didn't you let me..." The hobbit held up his hand, smiling, and Gloin sputtered to a stop, glaring suspiciously at Bilbo.  He knew that look.
"Yes, exactly, trade.  And what do you think our friend will do when he sees another merchant on the road?"
"Send them here if we're willing to overpay, but long term we can't support prices like that!  Eventually they'll bleed us dry!"  Bilbo nodded, seeming to surprise the irate dwarf.
"Oh yes," he said with an earnest look.  "But he will send them here for sure.  And once they start coming, word will spread.  It won't always be like this, for sure.  But now we have time to set up a proper market, and all who arrive will end up driving their prices down through competing with each other... when we get to that point.  But right now, we want word to spread that Erebor is an easy sell and that we have deep pockets and a willingness to spend.  Once everyone gets in the habit of coming here, we can become the trading hub it once was, only better.  Maybe one day, we'll be a bigger market than Gondor or Umbar... but first, we have to get them here."  Bilbo smiled at Gloin's sudden look of comprehension, but he wasn't ready for the dwarf to pick him up and hug him.
"I see now what Thorin sees in you," he said bluntly, smirking at Bilbo's look of false outrage.  "You're a clever one, Master Baggins."
"I try," the hobbit responded, eyes dancing.  "Now let's go tell Dori how much cloth we got, and tell Bombur we actually got pepper, cloves, and cinnamon.  They'll dance a jig."

Writing Scrap #11
Have you ever read Enid Blytons’ ‘The Magic Faraway Tree’? A Grand tree with all manner of worlds hidden in its branches, with everything the children could need. For us, that was the Peppercorn tree. It stood in the middle of the school and provided shade everywhere, the hanging leaves and little pink shells looked like a painting. my schoolmates would gather the pink peppercorns in fall, secreting them away, savouring the sweet coating, or loading them into drinking straws to pelt at each other in schoolyard warfare. While that went on below, the true magic grew up in the branches, worn down by generation after generation of children, perfect foot holds led up into the Cradle, the point where all the branches split, kids stashed snacks in hollows, branches were worn and trained into seats, roads, on the south facing branch, there was eve a space wide enough to lay down, everyone looked out for each other, no one had fallen from anything but the lowest foothold in years. It was our kingdom,
Stretching almost the entirety of our small worlds at the time, holding us high out of reach of teachers and classes, it painted our childhoods with green leaves and golden light, it sheltered us in rain, it whistled and swatted at kites, and I would swear on all my memories, Fairies lived in the hollow base where the daisies grew.
The Peppercorn stood for 174 years, planted two generations before the school ever existed, It stood on the school logo, it was beloved by every child and its sovereignty as the schoolyard castle was respected by the teachers. The Peppercorn stood until my last year of primary school. We got a new principal right before summer, we came back from our break to find our kingdom in pieces, the peppercorns should have just been turning pink when school started, but there was no colour in the schoolyard this year, a shiny grey building stood where it should have been, its branches turned into benches, bleached by the harsh heat and nails driven deep into it. “We needed more classrooms,” they said “We couldn’t use the empty field, kids play there,” they said, liars, the ditches and roots made playing there impossible, the roots were the only thing still there, we could dream that maybe it would grow back, maybe 200 years from now, a new Peppercorn would tower, maybe new children would wear footholds into the broad trunk, maybe a new cradle and new roads would reach over the schoolyard, but what did that matter to our betrayal, we hadn’t been warned, we’d never gotten to play one last game, some of us had never made the pilgrimage to the furthest, highest branch where the birds nest sat, some had, how could we say goodbye? How could we move on knowing that there were kids who had barely known the Peppercorn? Who would never get to know anything but plain grey walls and scratchy carpet?
