John Watson saying you join me and my companion/colleague/friend/flat mate while the only thing I can think of is oh please cut the bullshit.
Companion is already the gayest word in existence and yet you want to salvage yourself by flat mate in a desperate try of not using roommate which is actually nothing more than just the second gayest word in existence and you and I both know it.
Who do you think you’re fooling John, my beloved sweet summer child, only yourself I’m afraid.

Fun fact about Achilles and Patroclus:
While between their relationship most people seem to think that Achilles is the divine one and Patroclus is just a simple moral, that is not the case.
When we see Patroclus' family we know that his father(and the one who gave him to Peleus) is referred to as Menoetius. Who is Menoetius? He is both the King of Opus AND a son of Iapetus and Clymene or Asia. This makes him a brother of Prometheus and Epimetheus and a second-generation titan. He's the titan of Rashness. (in some sources it is said that he was killed by Zeus in the Titanomachy but they all credit him with being the father of Patroclus so idk)
And while Patroclus is an exile he's still the biological son of Menoetius, meaning that he has divine blood in him.
So yes, Achilles is still a demi-god, but Patroclus is also a demi-titan. Keep that in mind next time.

Het were achilles and patroclus cousins? It's never been said in the illad yet people say that patroclus's grandma is achilles's great grandma , even though the illad never says this??
Maybe.
Here's Achilles' family tree per my Caroline Alexander translation:
Tumblr media
I don't have a digital copy of Emily Wilson's translation, but it is relatively similar.
As you can see, Patroclus is not in the family tree.
Homer does mention Patroclus' father, Menoetius, a few times. He also mentions that Menoetius is the son of Aktor (or Actor). No mention of a mother.
Pindar suggest's Menoetius' mother being Aegina. Sound familiar? It should because Aegina had Aeacus who had Peleus.
Weird, right? Wouldn't that make Patroclus a peer of Peleus. Of course Aegina is a nymph and and nymphs are immortal, so a generation could have passed between her having her two sons.
I remain skeptical. I think if Patroclus had such a famous mother she would probably be mentioned by Homer as Thetis was mentioned. BUT THEN AGAIN these people were SUPER sexist so 🤷‍♀️
Here's the infamous Google family tree to explain the possible relation:
Tumblr media
Here's a better one.
What is that like first cousins once removed?
So given it's not explicit in Homer and the connection and understanding of other sources is dodgy at best, it's really a matter of how /you/ want to define what is canon.
Is your canon The Iliad? Is it the entire Epic Cycle which we only have parts of? Or is your canon all works of Ancient Greece?
I mentioned this in another post, Greek mythology is fucking frustrating for this very reason. We know of a bunch of ancient authors who wrote about mythology and they each had their own headcanons. And of course no two headcanons are the same, just to fuck with us some more I swear.
For emphasis, here's a summary of the different hcs for Patroclus' mother:
Tumblr media
But back to the cousin thing...
At least in various civilizations in Europe, marrying your first cousin was a thing up through the mid-20th century. Just Google search any European royal family. We mainly only now find it "weird" or "creepy" bcs of our modern understanding of genetics.
Google is telling me it was common in some periods and some areas of Ancient Greece. So if they were cousins, it most likely would not have been considered "icky" by their contemporaries through Homer. I mean those ppl in Athens created ritualized pedophilia so I think cousin incest is pretty tame in comparison
Many of the headcanons floating out there by all these dead famous white men are contradictory. For example: there are multiple versions of how Achilles gained his powers, there are multiple versions of Achilles' death. It can't all be true! So pick what you like and move on. Or better yet, make up your own canon for yourself! Don't stress about it.

patroclus in tsoa:
oh... i accidentally killed sarpedon??? i'm not built for violence, really. that's achilles. i guess he's always protecting me... i love him, i can't make myself argue with him— i'm so in love with him i don't know to be angry at him. ever.
patroclus in the iliad:
*invents gamer's rage by killing clysonysmus*
{kill count: so high that homer's just listing names at one point}
*kills sarpedon and then KILLS ANYBODY WHO TRIES TO TAKE HIS BODY* (the dead man's father ended up intervening i believe)
"hey patroclus... you're crying like a girl what's wrong??" "what's wrong? what's wrong??? what's wrong is yOU MOTHERFU—"
*knocks hector's charioteer onto the floor with a stone that fucking kills him* 10/10 my guy that was a perfect dive!! trojans seem awfully good at diving out of their chariots, don't you think??
"on my own? i would have killed TWENTY hectors, and you know that."

how a song changed my year.
achilles, achilles, achilles come down, won't you get up off, get up off the roof?
it's officially been one year since i first heard this song. it's kinda crazy how much can happen in that time, in reality and in mentality.
i still remember stumbling upon it. i'm sure i've seen it on my recommended in the past but this was the first time i really listened to it. it was late and i was sat on my bed, recovering from a cold. stressed over my barely-started application for some of the UC schools i never saw myself going to. i paused to take a little peruse through youtube, where i saw this performance. based on the song of achilles (a familiar name), and choreographed to achilles come down (an unfamiliar title).
i was drawn immediately in. not just by the smooth flow of the dancers portraying their characters, but by the power of the lyrics and how it affected what i was seeing of achilles, patroclus, and briseis.
and so i decided to look up the actual song and its lyrics, to see what they really were. and they were beautiful.
today of all days, see, how the most dangerous thing is to love,
this song, all seven minutes and two seconds of it, has seen me through so many monumental changes in my life. from growing positively mentally, to graduating high school and starting uni, to familial tensions.
how you will heal and you'll rise above, crowned by an overture bold and beyond,
it's honestly a wonder how i haven't grown bored or tired of it yet. and i think that's because every time i sit and really listen to it, there's always something new i'm discovering or interpreting, whether that be compositionally or lyrically.
to start, it was realising that the only instruments are strings - definitely a cello, and in all most likely a string quartet. as a violinist myself, i love hearing any use of strings in modern songs. having a whole song relying on the softness and dynamics of them though? that's gonna get me every time. how almost the entirety of the song is underlaid with the eighth notes of the cello, and throughout the verses the intermittence of the higher strings.
as i grew familiar with achilles come down, i discovered the power that all the lyrics held. there were a select few that drew my attention, from either how poetic they sounded, to how they seemed to mirror an aspect of my life that i didn't know could be put into words.
loathe the way they light candles in rome, but love the sweet air of the votives,
then there were the sections of spoken french. i thought that the addition of a second language in the song really added to it as a whole, but upon looking up (and attempting to translate what i could), i found that they added another level of melancholy. because what better way is there to make the song more emotional than including snippets of french philosophy about the value of life?
qu'on appelle une raison de vivre, est un même temps une excellent raison de mourir
through this year, i've found myself coming up with scenarios in my head, with this song playing in the background. mostly it's been with characters of my current hyperfixations, but i've found myself in these situations as well. it's definitely a reflection of who i see myself to be, but i hope it's also an envisioning to who i hope to be.
thank you to achilles come down for finding its way into my life. thank you for the past year, and i hope the next is just as exciting.
throw yourself into the unknown, with a pace and fury defiant

If I get to carry an inkling of what’s left of your love, I’ll be happy. If I can text the same way you do. If I can make the same jokes you do. If I can remember your favourite colour. If I remember how you like your coffee or if you even like it at all. I’ll be happy. Remembering you is my only freedom from losing you.

The epitome of the gay experience is wanting to scream from the rooftops how much you love them. From all of this wreckage love still persists. The world is on fire but none of it matters because I have him.
It’s wanting to do that and more. The ‘I love my boyfriend’ shirts aren’t enough. From day one I wanted to wear a ring on my finger to show the world that he is mine and I am his. It’s us against the world.
It’s wanting to do all that, but feeling the need to hide it in public. To keep this wondrous thing behind closed doors.
And here I am crying in my car because I love him so much and everyone needs to see my darling boy and how much I love him. But I will never be safe if I do so.
