people who fuck and suck on Zero Day but hate Elephant are probably the most media illiterate people you'll ever come across.

I feel like if you cant grasp that Elephant was an artistic telling of how many lives are affected by one person's actions (Two people since Alex orchestrated Eric to help), you just miss the entire point of the film and have no right to judge it.

Zero Day and Elephant shouldnt even be compared bc truly, they tell different stories even if its on the same topic. Zero Day tells the lives of Andre and Calvin in a way that makes you understand their actions and SHOWS why they were disliked and how socially outcasted they were, even if Cal was more liked than Andre.

Elephant gives you glimpses of Eric and Alex but its enough to paint the picture that Alex was privileged with a seemingly nice family and that his actions were only justified to himself by how he was bullied in class by the jocks he hates. He killed people indiscriminately and he lacks room for redemption, where I think it'd be possible to find pity in Cal and Andre.

To juxtapose him against Johnny, who very clearly has a difficult home life, but good friends in school is SO so important in telling Alex's character. Elephant is a film where you have to inference what the themes are, its not directly shown to you like in Zero Day- That is why it is more of an artistic piece. - Johnny, even with a difficult home life, still tries to save and warn people and is even shown to STILL be looking after his drunkard father during the shit thats going down! The focus on the students is absolutely necessary and dragging out the scenes where they all cross paths just shows how many personal timelines are affected. Johnny comes out unscathed but within the window of 20 minutes, the Elias he had JUST spoken to is already presumed dead. Someone entirely wiped away from Johnny's life at the hands of Alex's selfishness and naivety.

Zero Day is a great film and it is dear to me, but it only really gets into Calvin and Andre's mind's and barely their personal life. It tracks their thought processes and their personal relationship, it shows you how involved they are with one another and really sells that even in death, they are all they have. Elephant is probably the polar opposite of Zero Day, and thinking critically about Elephant is sooo important. Im really tired of seeing people in the Elephant tag shit on it in favor of Zero Day as if they are near the same story. They didn't out-do each other, both films did an amazing job at telling stories of teenage tragedy.

- listens very closely, making eye contact with you or looking directly at you if you avoid his gaze

- when you're done he slides his gloved hand over your head smoothing down your hair

- he had his hand over yours before you even started, sensing the tension

- he squeezed your hand a bit, not enough to hurt you but enough for you to notice

- he was mad, angry, furious, that ANYONE could treat you like that, could be so heartless

- but he knew tight now you didn't need someone to protect you. What was done was done. Right now you needed comfort, and you trusted him with that -he gently wrapped his hands around your head and led you towards his chest, you didn't put up a fight

- played with your hair while he whispered sweet nothings to you, except these sweet nothings were sweet somethings, because they did mean something to the both of you

- paused his game when he saw you were serious

- gave you his full attention, his mouth slightly agape and eyes widened as his brows furrowed in worry as he listened

- took him a moment to take it all in but when he did all he felt at that moment was sorry for you.

- asks if he can hug you and when you say yes he hugs really tight, its awkward but you can feel his worry and determination to make you feel better

- not the best at comforting but will you for your sake

"What... Are you... For real...? Uh... C-can I hug you... MC...? Ok, alright. Uh.. Sorry. I just don't get it. Humans are so supposed to be, well, humane. Thats like the total opposite... that was... weirdly kind

I think he realised he had an audience, and he has a reputation of goodness to maintain for his election, and he needs to make sure he's still got a good eye from the public, and the public happens to contain kang's friends

but behind closed doors, the monster of pure anger that kang sees him as emerges from the shadows, leaking from all the dark corners of their mansion, and kang shuts himself off to not have to experience the horrors looming above him in the shape of his father

hey what if i made an ffvii au based around a very niche musical i enjoy. woe dolls of ffvii be upon ye

the narrator : the Planet itself (tells the story, also tries to warn people about the consequences of their actions but cannot be heard by the rest of the cast) the gambler and the monk : JENOVA and a cetra (maybe ifalna, maybe just a random one. its not like theyre mentioned by name anyway) jasper : grimoire valentine (this is mainly bc annabel had to be lucrecia) annabel : lucrecia (she canonically sort of brought vincent back from the dead. sort of. she probably wouldve brought grimoire back if she could have. its also lowkey implied that she may have had a crush on grimoire?)

((now heres where the roles go off the rails in regards to what their original relationships were))

edgar : hojo fay : vincent (THATS RIGHT BAY BEE IF JASPER IS GRIMOIRE VINCENT HAS TO BE FAY. whos the guy vincent leaves hojo for when he realizes Oh This Guys Fucked Up Actually? probably cid or reeve. i dont really ship vincent with anyone so like. as long as its not one of the Kids. anyway also thinks about how grimoires last words in canon are "tell vincent im sorry". thinks about "i took the liberty of bringing your dear old dad back. you can talk to him again! but only if you come back and marry me". thinks) byron : sephiroth (let sephiroth be an anarchist lmao) amelia : angeal ("amelia"s shitty dad is hollander obvs) priscilla : aerith (the obvious choice, but also im always thinking about the similarities between aerith and vincent (vincents similarities with cloud are far more obvious, but listen to me. aerith and vincent have their parallels too). priscilla reminding jasper of fay (aerith reminding grimoire of vincent)) soldier 7285 : theres so many people it could be but im leaning towards zack or cloud? everyone else gets to be voodoopunks

fear not, for i have typed up a summary of the musical under the cut! if you read the summary and get upset about the way ive fucked with the relationships from the game for the sake of this au, please refer to this post <3

CONTENT WARNINGS: offstage but explicitly mentioned suicide, also very brief but explicitly mentioned parental abuse, immolation mentions (sort of), execution by a militaristic police state (near the end)

The Dolls of New Albion: a Steampunk Opera is a folk opera by Paul Shapera

the opera is split up into four acts, each following a generation of a single family. each act has a narrator telling you about the world as time passes. while not all of it is directly relevant to the story at hand, it tells you something interesting about the world. however, there is a recurring motif of a gambler and a monk who played a never-ending card game. this is important later. the city of new albion was built around them by the people who came to watch them play. but more importantly, in the Now, annabel(/annabelle/annabella. the script cant decide how its spelled) mcalistair is raising up the dead

okay so basically. annabel had a big ol crush on a guy in school. they had never talked until one day they talked and kissed and they became friends for a little bit. but then annabel was expelled for stealing cadavers for her own research. and she became a shut-in and he got married then died young. and she's figured out how to call his soul down into a doll she has built!

the doll is very lifelike but cant really move and cannot talk but he can play the radio! isnt he great? look at annabels doll everyone! she can go anywhere now bc hes proof that shes brilliant! shes conquered life and death! but not everything you love loves you in return. and when she realizes that he cannot, will not ever love her back or speak to her, he doesnt want to be back, she destroys the doll. and throws all of her notes in an old trunk in the attic.

and so passes the first generation.

the narrator informs us that annabel gets married and has a son named edgar at some point. edgar grows up and falls in love, as people often do, with a woman named fay, and on the night he was planning to propose to her, she tells him that while she loves him and she really tried to make the relationship work, hes got Issues and so she leaves him for another man.

in his anger, when edgar goes through the old trunk in the attic and finds annabels notes on necromancy, he makes a business out of it! he summons back the souls of the dead for anyone who asks and pays, and when his business becomes successful enough he uses the money and influence he has to run the business of fays new partner into the ground.

he goes and finds fay and is like. "look. i have a very successful business. the man that you say you love is ruined and poor and I know you cant live like that. and whats more than that, you know your dead dad who you loved so dearly? yeah i brought him back for you, but the only way you can talk to him is if you come back and get married to me. :)" and fay does but shes also like "what the fuck. i actually loved you once why did you end up like this this is why i left you in the first place" also the person whose soul edgar brought back is jasper, the same man annabel brought back originally.

and so passes the second generation.

edgar and fay have a son named byron. now, byron becomes a voodoopunk. voodoopunk is one part religious movement, one part political party, one part punk subculture. yes i know voodoo is a closed practice i dont know that the person who wrote this does and yeah.

so basically his whole plan is to run jasper for mayor? and theres this girl named amelia whos also running with the voodoopunks. it is unclear how old she is, but she is referred to as "a girl" rather than "a woman", so it is likely she's either a teenager or a young adult.

but jasper has figured something out. jasper has figured out how to string together songs on the radio to finally speak for himself. and byron is like "here listen to our doll give you a speech and prove that the dead can run this country better than any of the vultures that are politicians in any part of the political spectrum!"

and jasper sings.

and he sings about how he did not want to be brought back. death was peaceful and he did not want to be here.

and amelia heard this. and she had no friends. and she lived only with her father who was abusive (presumably both verbally and physically? it is never elaborated upon but we do know its at least verbal.)

and she kills herself with only the words of the song jasper sang as her note.

at which point theres public outcry bc ALL the dolls have been singing this song. in the publics eyes, the dolls killed amelia. and so people start rounding up the dolls -- who there are more of than living people in new albion by now -- and burning them alive (for a given definition of alive? its really more of releasing their souls again but really violently) byron manages to "save" jasper though.

and so ends the third generation.

we revisit the card game. the gambler died of a heart attack during the final hand, and cursed with his dying breath that the game was not yet finished, promising the two would come back to finish it one day.

and so begins the fourth generation.

New Albion has become a military police state, killing anyone with any sort of memorabilia of the dead. we see priscilla, byrons daughter, hiding in a basement and playing a never-ending game of cards with jasper. (YEP THATS RIGHT ITS KINDA IMPLIED THAT JASPER AND PRISCILLA ARE THE REINCARNATIONS OF THE MONK AND THE GAMBLER, and even if theyre not, theyre still the ones continuing the game they started).

we also see soldier 7285 join the police.

priscilla loves her great grandfather jasper dearly -- and he loves her back. she reminds him of fay, when fay was younger and more innocent, and jasper lets slip during their card game that he still wants to die but he is willing to stay because he wants priscilla to live even more. because if theyre found, they both die.

priscilla is like what the fuck thats not? fair??? why should you have to sacrifice your death for my life??? and she thinks about it. and decides that a life of hiding isnt much of a life at all.

and she calls the cops on herself.

a firing squad happens, despite jasper doing all he can to prevent it because her life for his death isnt fair to her, either.

but soldier 7285 doesnt fire.

he is court martialled and stripped of his duties/rank for it. soldier 7285 thinks about how priscilla loved jasper so much she was willing to die if it meant his freedom, and goes. hey what the fuck sort of country do i serve that thinks caring about the people we loved past their deaths is punishable by death??? im going to tear this country down and rebuild it on the graves of the people who decided this, and if i die in the process, at least i can be a martyr and inspire people to finish what i started the way she inspired me.

and thats the dolls of new albion!

i mean yes exactly palestinian gay ppl exist too so like i’m not saying support hamas or sth but using israel’s talking points about how they’re better bc they’ve got gay rights (not even true, theyre just not as bad in that regard) is indeed partaking in pinkwashing. very often when people discuss stuff like racism against MENA people or hate crimes against muslims or how our countries are being actively destroyed by the west, ppl will almost justify it by saying that supporting us and not wanting us to die and our countries to be in shambles is somehow supporting homophobia. or they’ll be like “yeah but the homophobia there is so bad” like .. yes? and how is destroying our countries supposed to change that? and it’s quite annoying that these topics get brought up at a time like this for example when palestinians are being killed at such high rates. including gay palestinians. one of my dear friends is a gay palestinian guy and he also made a similar comment to the one ur quoting and it comes from the frustration of only seeing ppl care about gay rights in our countries (& using gay rights in our countries to victimise themselves rather than. yanno thinking about the gay people who actually live there and have to deal with the homophobia) when we’re being bombed or killed or otherwise seriously harmed as a population.

i feel like when ppl want to discuss homophobia in the middle east, they very often do it in this .. tonedeaf way. i’ve had to deal with white & western people literally try to use the homophobia in my country against me, to demonise ME for being brown & born into islam, as if it hasn’t directly affected me & has never affected them. it’s so frustrating having ur own struggles used against u in order to then justify the harm against u or even move the discussion from ur people being killed. idk how else to say it, but basically i get why brown ppl get frustrated when white western gay ppl see our countries being destroyed and decide now is the time to talk about how if they lived in our countries they would totally face homophobia therefore our countries are bad. maybe there’s ppl who go about it in a better way but i’ve generally seen it done in a way that almost dismisses our struggles & centres themselves, hence my distaste

honestly not just a YA issue I’ve seen some insanely boring fantasy that’s just ripoffs of bigger series or a rehash of tropes that have already been done to death in the 90s

my dear i said in my post everythings already been done. rehash of tropes is not my problem its the execution. and YA has a specific writing style that is rampant. which is why i specifically said YA as an AFTERTHOUGHT. theres boring fantasy and then theres a hollow sentence and dialogue thats barely passable. like i know abt terry goodkind! one of the most egregious cases of direct ripoffs and a garbage cobbling of tropes!

but the thing abt YA fiction these days is that its all the same stylistically. i got so excited by Raybearer and A Song of Wraiths and Ruin (what the FUCK does that title mean btw) and Children of Blood and Bone bc i thot that authorship of color would revitalize a marketing group with deeply incestuous stylistic writing. and you know what? its the same shit with african-influenced flair! utterly disappointing. much of YA has a lack of craft. just LOOK at sjm. many of the newer writers dont challenge their audience. bc YA is abt marketing. you know whose from the old guard who has bangin' dialogue? Holly Black! ill still read her work bc shes been at the craft for a long time. even her earliest work was complicated and dark, and at many points, lovely. you know whose out here being challenging? courtney summers and melina marchetta. look at donna jo napoli or francesca lia block or meredith ann pierce if you wanna see real stylistic differences or challenging themes in writing with the targeted high school age group.

queer YA too, yes queer YA still sounds like the same shit. bc a lot of ppl who write YA only read other YA authors who do the same shit! its WILD.

however that post wasnt abt YA it was abt fiction writers at LARGE who have frail egos and insecurities that ignore craft in favor of suffering under the delusion that what theyre making is entirely singular, that what they can produce is unique. and i did say that isnt the point of writing. or at least, it shouldnt be. the point should be: because you love to create. the goal can factor in, yes! like im making a series of short stories that i want to get published abt black queer and trans characters who are somehow directly or tangentially connected to a university for studying magic. studying magic at school? its been done! a series of interconnected short stories? its been done. see: brides of rollrock island. but im not making it bc i think its so unique that i dont want to be influenced by other writers and it has to be protected. im making it bc i love my craft and i want others to engage with what i love. i want to share myself.

im also writing a fanfiction rn for the first time since at the latest 2015. why? bc im in a discord for fans of a 900page literary fantasy and they love to share what they create bc they love the material so much that they study the book to develop a sense of dialogue and characterization and try to present that in their fanfic. bc they want to do it justice! bc they care abt craft! its a tiny fandom! the most hits ppl get on their fic is 217! there are only 50 fanfics for the book at most on AO3! but they do it bc they love writing and adore the material. the discord is popping off every hour of the day and theres only 111 ppl on it. but theyre creating! and i love writing and i think this act of close-reading the material will help me develop my writing!

it wasnt abt YA. it was abt writing.

S1 Rewatch: Lena’s Take [1.07]

whew! what an episode! also, i hope it’s no trouble that i send my rewatches in a day late... sorry!

favourite scene: this episode has SO many good scenes... my god. I have to say the paint balloon war scene, though, just for the a) pure chaotic energy and b) good character moments. farkle getting absolutely HAMMERED with paint balloons. isadora screaming war cries (if you imagine this scene without music it would be HILARIOUS), riley being so scared of getting hit she pulls a me back in third grade playing dodgeball. dylan taking a dramatic slow mo paint balloon to the chest. zay and charlie working perfectly together as a tactical team 🥺, ending with both of them absolutely MUCKING lucas as he tries to choose between the revolution and his blooming feelings for riley.... they have NO time for straight nonsense. plus charlie having an ANEURSYM when zay literally HUGS him is so funny (i literally said out loud “charlie sweetie”)... the “intricate rituals that allow you to touch the skin of other men” energy it has... WERE YOU AWARE THAT I LOVE THEM? a good scene on so many comedic and emotional levels! it really demonstrates the boxes the students are stuck in, and how hard they’re going to have to work to get out of them by the end of this ep, and, on a larger scale, the end of the season.... the Nuances.

favourite performance: the amount of ICONIC performances this episode makes it SO HARD TO CHOOSE! maya leading the performers with team.... riley’s melodramatic but still heart-wrenching rendition of cry and you cry alone... farkle’s emotional struggles showcased in control... honestly, it’s a so close for me between thnks fr th mmrs and come out and play... but despite the incredible power of thnks fr th mmrs and the fact that i LOVE the techies’ family dynamic the MOST, especially when they perform together because it’s so few and far between, i have to give it to come out and play. a) i LOVE that song, b) it undercurrents my favourite scene in the episode.... and c) its a zc duet. im SORRY but like i think it serves REALLY well to highlight the frustrations and core of the scenes: a taunting, frustrated battle between two sides who want nothing more than to be kept separated. also, for two characters who still don’t know each other SUPER well... zc really work excellently as a team, directly contradicting the isolation and separation from others they both discussed feeling last episode... They CLICK... n that hug.... i love them so much. however i must point out the POWER thnks fr th mmrs has to be led by dylan and asher. like PLEASE. theyre baby. i love them so much and the joy pumped into my soul whenever asher gets to sing? unmatched.

favourite character this ep: lucas fucking friar ABSOLUTELY RULED this episode. king stomps back into school in his giant stompy boots and stages a giant stompy revolution. lucas’ ability to just show up and throw places into chaos is WONDERFUL, and focusing on it means he ran this episode. outnumbered by enemies and returning late, he staged a full-fledged week-long revolution... and it was successful. he also had some of the best lines this episode, and i love how, despite the fact that he pretends not to care about ANYTHING, he has such a dedication to his friends that makes it only obvious how much he actually cares about everything. this episode was lucas in his element, showcasing the way he’s softening around riley (i LOVE they) and how steadfast and determined he is in his beliefs, stances, and endeavours. lucas cares, okay? he cares a LOT. i love lucas a lot and if i had more energy i would go into an unnervingly deep psychoanalysis of him... but i don’t, so i’ll say i love him the MOST and i’ll leave it at that.

favourite line: lucas: It’s like they say, you know. “If we burn, you burn with us.” That’s classic literature, right? jack, deadpan: The Hunger Games. | also “white nonsense”. EXCELLENT, zay.

an underrated moment: yindra and nigel being absolutely iconic this episode. the two of them plus jade are the three side characters i feel unfairly attached to. the moment where they go to meet lucas and isadora to straight up say they’re tired of the bullshit.. they were actually real standouts this episode and it really goes to show how much main character drama effects the sise characters, which isn’t discussed very much and is ALWAYS nice and refreshing to see. plus nigel as mulligan made my little heart sing.... HIS BREAK DANCE JUMP UP!! get nigel on america’s got talent, i DARE YOU.

something i missed the first time around: FARKLE STARTING TO RANT AT ISADORA WHEN HE FEELS UNFAIRLY TARGETED, FORESHADOWING HIS DIVA MELTDOWN IN THE FINALE... BRILLIANT. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT. we get a subtle warning that we do NOT heed. i also think i overlooked how clearly farkle’s mental health issues are showcased this episode, which improve as he gets friends later on, but are ripped wide open again in the finale.

first impression vs your reread impression: loved it both times, more this time. this episode is a major turning point for the main conflict of the season (techie & performer divide) and is SO goddamn intense, especially with the end scene... the bit where we get shots of EVERYONE alone on their phones, ensuring it could be anyone at school? INCREDIBLE. SHOWSTOPPING. love love loved this ep.

literally NO TROUBLE AT ALL lena dear, we love to read them regardless of when you send!! the fact that you’re being so diligent about participating is like impactful as it is <3 and lucky us bc your thoughts are always so GOOD. i literally don’t even know where to start because you just said so many good things. what i WILL say is that you may get the chance to talk to nigel or yindra or jade v soon... and also i WILL be looking forward to that deep psychoanalysis of lucas james sometime in the future,, but SHOUT OUT to you pointing out another foreshadowing moment... but also ma’am your descriptions of things are just so poetic. like where is your aaa fandom blog in the fake aaa universe so i can follow and reblog all your meta posts as the seasons unfold being like damn... yeah... points were made,,,,

big plant update because i have depression

this is canach, i am pretty sure he is a torch plant (a type of aloe?) which is exciting because then he has the potential to get to 10 feet tall. since i moved him into this bigger pot a couple months ago hes had a bit of a growth spurt which is wild! i had him in a slightly smaller pot before and he barely grew the whole time he was so its great that as long as i keep giving him a bigger growth space, he’ll keep growing

everything from my finger up is new growth, w/ my finger for some kind of scale

he’s had these smaller growths at his base for a while. ive debated separating and repotting them but im not confident enough to do so without damaging the root ball yet... maybe if they get bigger i’ll do it in the spring but i dont want to risk too much over the winter yknow lmfao

next is tegwen... im not good at plant identification but i think shes either an echevaria or a graptoveria. shes had a bit of a rough patch... a lot of my plants have to be honest haha... but her new growth is very tight and healthy looking so i think shes doing well! her stem is quite extended from the soil line because i had an issue with some kind of root rot in one of my plants that almost spread to her because they were sharing a pot at the time, but i quickly repotted her and shes bounced back

these black marks are actually burn marks. my window is south-facing and the sun has been super low and bright for a couple of months now, and i unfortunately noticed too late that her leaves had literally been scorched by the sun :0 these marks have sort of scabbed over like scars now which is really interesting even if i do feel bad for letting her get burned

finger for scale lol... the root-rot victim tegwen was sharing a pot with was this eschevaria i called carys. the main plant had 2 heads both of which perished but i managed to grab a few of these little offshoots who have been growing pretty well. fingers crossed for these... (the lone leaf is from a different plant, i had a couple that i took a chance with and only this leaf managed to grow a root, the others shrivelled... heres hoping for it)

trahearne... my dear trahearne. victim of an asshole cat who sat on him enough to fully snap him in half. i took these stems from his corpse and planted them and honestly theyre thriving, theyre incredibly strong and healthy and i even found another broken stem behind my radiator like 3 weeks later, planted that and THAT managed to bounce back. literally unkillable this bitch, love it. no idea what kind of succ he is except the immortal kind (maybe some kind of sedum?)

dearest ceara, i think she might be a sedum too? her stem is kind of twisty because i moved the pot around too much and she kept changing directions to get the most sun and now i had to rotate her again because her long offshoot stem was hanging directly over my radiator and was starting to look a little dried out but i couldnt water it more because the main plant was in a good state and i’d have ended up overwatering like a fuckin trolley problem but the track i chose is having a twisty stem rather than killing 5 people.

wow literally in the space of writing this post the sun has set enough to change the lighting. anyway this is my jade plant malomedies! my biggest success story! he was originally like a quarter of this size and hes just grown and grown. got him at the same time as trahearne and a little fenestraria i called caithe (who unfortunately died after flowering twice) about 2.5 years ago (ive been keeping succulents for 3 years total so like... hes my long runner lol)

noticed recently these white dots on the leaves that are apparently just because of mineral deposits in the water and the timing of these leaves lines up with when i filled my water bottle from the bathroom tap bc i was too lazy to go downstairs so ;| its nothing to worry about and i think it actually looks really pretty lol.......... wild how plants can just do that

ok now get ready to press F bc this is my current struggle . . . . .

:weary: even looking at her makes me wanna die lmfao.......... no idea the ID but this is wynne... she had a fungal infection. ive never had to deal with a fungal infection before. i think it was white fungus bc it was big grey patches and the leaves were just dying... i had to cut off all the infected leaves and the ones that were left over arent doing well because i got paranoid of mildew and rubbed off all the epicuticular wax or whatever its called but they still have some strength so its like... maybe she’ll bounce back. maybe. maybe. u_u

this is her new growth... you can see where i rubbed the wax off in my zealousness :( i have my fingers crossed for her but like... can she really recover from something like this? am i powerful enough to bring someone this far gone back from the dead? who knows but i hate looking at her bc it makes me feel like a failure lmfao

i’ve been thinking so hard about this ask ever since i received it there is so much that could happen here

we know. so very little about garfield the deals warlock outside of being. well a deals warlock who does a lot of shady shit. this brings me to tom collins, who we know tries not to be shady but ends up being that way anyway either by his own tomfoolery(haha get it) or by association w yknow, the thieves guild and whatever the fuck lenny’s up to nowadays.

we know tom is capable of murder, hes shown to be uh PRETTY GOOD AT THAT? in an actual fist-fight tho he’d probably be shit out of luck and assuming garfield is actually a cat he’s already got the upper hand bc who the fuck wants to fist-fight a guy with claws. i dont. tom probably doesnt. going back to my earlier point tho we don’t know if garfield has ever directly killed or fought anyone so for all we know he could be all tricks (and lets face it he probably is), but assuming both of these boys have done a hit before here’s how i feel like this fight would go down:

i don’t know what theyre fighting for or about but garfield starts it. he throws off a couple of spells while also advertising his latest magical gadget, tom attempts to avoid conflict bc why would he want to fight this weird cat man. why would he do that. but he does bc the stores closed and its a battlefield now these r just fantasy costco rules. and also bc u sent me this ask and made me think about this for half an hour tops. anyway if ur in past closing time ur getting a spellslot to the face and/or dick, maybe not in that order, maybe not at the same time. either way wear a cup.

eventually tom probably gets the upper hand bc as we know hes Good At Murdering People With His Warlock Powers. this isn’t lethal mind u, just enough to get this catman to stop clawing at him. it works, but in a final last ditch attempt garfield looks up at tom and says

“wanna make a deeeeeeal?”

now u, like i have been, might be wondering what he could possibly offer tom right now that isnt just bullshit so he can get away. the answer is probably nothing. the deal is if tom doesn’t kill him in his own goddamn store he can have this one mystery item. tom agrees bc Fuck This he just wants to go home. garfield certainly Looks like he’s won, if the grin on his face is anything to go by.

whats the mystery item? who knows, tom never checked, its just in a nondescript box under the bar collecting dust. who won? technically tom but i’ll leave the Real winner up to u, dear reader

lmao yeah, i never finished it, but it still sticks with me bc i think it was one of the first movies i saw Ezra M. in... but dear lord was it uncomfortable

ezra was GREAT in it, i stuck with it til the end simply cuz i couldnt fully figure out what the heck was HAPPENING. like i admire the ambitiousness of all the jumpcuts from one part of the timeline to another, but i do not think that ambitiousness was matched by actual freaking quality of endproduct, u feel me?

like... the messages were mixed, i think, is the biggest failing. it wanted to be a warning to parents everywhere about the dangers of not getting help for your children when you see warning signs... but it ALSO really really wanted you to go OH NOOO but it’s not TILDA’S fault, she didnt do ANYTHING~~~~~ its all her KID’S fault!!!

and you cant have it both ways. either it’s vital that a parent steps in when needed(and is therefore, to some extent, part of the problem and responsible for the result, because, yaknow, to paraphrase “the only reason shit ever goes down is cuz good ppl dont stop it”), OR the actions of the children are their own and the parents shouldn’t be vilified for their children’s violent behavior.

also, WAY too much of the film was unneeded filler and rising tension. it’s, what, 2 hours long? maybe longer? and i can pick out maybe 3 scenes that have stuck with me(and that’s pushing it). if they REALLY took advantage of their runtime, they couldve pulled off the nuanced message better. cuz if im being entirely honest, the extent to which the mother is attacked is pretty damn extreme. but with what little time they took on ACTUAL story content, as opposed to Lingering Shots Of Tilda Looking Bored And A Lil Disoriented, it comes off as stilted and unsure of what it wants to say.

you need time to really convince us of the nuance of a debate, and if you want to say there’s truth to both sides, that the ACTUAL answer lies somewhere in the middle, you need to SPEND TIME ON THAT. and SHOW that. and EXPLAIN that. you can’t just show us two extremes(this is her fault for not taking any action, BUT dont you feel bad for her that her inaction caused the deaths of MANY children and now shes bullied and harassed??) and expect us to not, yaknow.... take one side and get annoyed by the presence of the other.

it was filmed on a very expensive camera. the images were pretty. but overall it spent too much time asking you to piece together the logical train of events when that just wasnt needed. there’s no reason we needed to play detective. in fact, it would’ve hit much harder if we were just WITH HER FROM THE BEGINNING TO THE END

imagine it starting with a woman in labor-- no weird shitty symbolic scene tht makes no goddamn sense of some woman in a mosh pit covered in tomato sauce, no confusing scene where tilda swinton washes her face and becomes ezra miller and then goes back to being tilda swinton for no discernible reason, a literal woman giving actual birth. she gives birth to a son, and wants with all her heart to love him, but he cries. endlessly. she cant sleep, or think, and people stare at her like she’s abusing him, and he does not stop, until his daddy picks him up. weird, yeah?

but babies are weird! theyre weird and squishy and it FEELS annoying and manipulative but-- theyre weird. so alright, i guess, and then he’s older and hes just so... well, the way he was. defiant. but in that really fucking odd way. and totally plays it up for his dad

imagine actual scenes building up to her feeling genuinely uncomfortable before taking him to the doctor, the tension and drama and the way you, the audience would FEEL THAT WITH HER. IS she making a mountain of a molehill? hmm. but it’s strange, yeah? hmmm. imagine actual fucking buildup to her being 100% fucking DONE, and telling him that she wishes she’d never had him and she wishes she lived in paris. imagine feeling that WITH her instead of dispassionately wondering where the fuck that came from and rolling your eyes as you wait for the next piece of information that will allow you to understand what’s going on at ALL.

and holy shit imagine going through the fallout with her, imagine watching her look for a job, imagine her going to see him in prison because she has no one else and no idea what else to do and because that’s-- that’s what mothers are SUPPOSED to do. imagine her asking him why he did it, repeatedly, imagine the palpable tension that would arise from the two of them sitting silently in the room, and then imagine how much the ending wouldve had ACTUAL EMOTIONAL PAYOFF when he finally, FINALLY opened up to her

imagine how much more effective the message of “sometimes it creeps up on you and you just want to pretend it isn’t happening and all these little things over the years are so EASY to explain away, but you CANT, you HAVE to help your children-- but also, we as the public need to STOP vilifying these parents because it leads to people not seeking help and ultimately they didn’t directly cause this on purpose” would be if we were FUCKIN RIGHT GODDAMN THERE WHEN ALL THIS SHIT WAS HAPPENING

it was entirely too damn ambitious.

ALSO a lot of the pointless filler scenes or scenes that dragged on longer than necessary couldve been cut or cut down if they didn’t need to CONSTANTLY ESTABLISH WHERE THEY WERE AND WHAT WAS HAPPENING AHHHHH

Rereading Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix: Chapter Thirty-One - O.W.L.s

lets read about taking tests because thats fun and wont stress me out AT ALL!!!!!

LOL ‘bitter’ is definitely the right adjective to use here like DAMN harry ur so salty about a girl you never really even dated. but also ya, cho kinda sucks

- harry and hermione are filling ron in on all the grawp drama and hes taking he news like the average person would - being like “UM WHAT NO”

- hermione is so busy studying she hasnt even been making elf clothes *GASP*

- ernie macmillian is forcing everyone around him to tell him how long they study each day and its ANNOYING AS HELL. he seems like the kid who reminds the teacher about homework

Meanwhile Draco Malfoy had found a different way to induce panic. “Of course, it’s not what you know,” he was heard to tell Crabbe and Goyle loudly outside Potions a few days before the exams were to start, “It’s who you know.”

“Gran’s always telling Professor Marchbanks I’m not as good as my dad...Well...you saw what she’s like at St. Mungo’s...” Neville looked fixedly at the floor. Harry, Ron, and Hermione glanced at one another, but didn’t know what to say. It was the first time that Neville had acknowledged that they had met at the Wizarding hospital.

Meanwhile Ron was reading two years of Charms notes with his fingers in his ears, his lips moving soundlessly.

Harry had a fleeting memory of a club soaring high into the air and landing loudly on the thick skull of a troll...Smiling slightly, he ben over the paper and began to write...

- hermione missed a question on her runes test and she is going the fuck OFFFFFF on everybody in the vicinity. its pretty bad ass.

“Oh, you’re so naive sometimes, Harry, you really think Umbridge will wait for proof?” said Hermione, who seemed determined to be in a towering temper, and she swept off toward the girls’ dormitories, banging the door behind her. “Such a lovely, sweet-tempered girl,” said Ron, very quietly.

KISS ALREADY

- OH HELL NO UMBRIDGE AND HER CRONIES ARE STUNNING HAGRID I WILL NOT STAND FOR THIS

Harry could see the tiny outline of Fang, attempting to defend Hagrid, leaping at the wizards surrounding him until a Stunning Spell caught him and he fell to the ground. Hagrid gave a howl of fury, lifted the culprit bodily from the ground, and threw him: The man flew what looked like ten feet and did not get up again.

OH MY GOD HOW DO I NOT REMEMBER THIS PART?!?!?! GUYS

“Leave him alone! Alone, I say!” said Professor McGonagall’s voice through the darkness. “On what grounds are you attacking him? He has done nothing, nothing to warrant such-” Hermione, Parvati, and Lavender all screamed. No fewer than four Stunners had shot from the figures around the cabin toward Professor McGongall.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

- im so mad right now i cant deal with this. i completely forgot that happened.

- OH MY GOD AND THIS IS THE CHAPTER WHERE HARRY HAS THE DREAM ABOUT SIRIUS IN THE DEPARTMENT OF MYSTERIOUS R U KIDDING ME???? WTF JK ROWLING THIS WAS TOO MUCH
