Thinking about doing art as a life thing. Like in a general sense. Theres this stigma that if you do art as a living youre going to be a starving artist. It isnt that far from the truth but I also dont think its like that entirely either. Of course current economic atmosphere is playing a big part, but thats affecting EVERY family not just artists.
Im thinking how so many families try to drive out the idea of being an artist out of peoples heads as a career when they dont understand how vast the choices are. Is designing this lamp on your desk not art? Is building that dinner table not art? Are all the graphics online and UI and icons not art? All the childrens books, and childrens TV, all the special effects in marvel and costume making and prop design and building in real life and 3D. Is that not art?
Families have this immediate train of thought of traditional paintings set up in galleries selling for millions once the artist dies. When in reality thats not really the case. Most fine arts artists set their prices as fairly affordable. They dont want art to be a rich people thing. They want you to enjoy the piece and not break your back while still being paid for their labor.
Its crazy to me. An artist I used to be taught by did childrens workshops and earned a living that way. Almost every member of the museum I know has a main job (whether it relates to art or not is up to them.)
If you want to take up art as your primary source of living then of course you need a backup. But theres isnt any unmarried/unpartnered person that works and can afford their own home. Hell, I got a job that pays pretty average and I wouldnt afford living alone. People who know the risk, still do it, and have no extra funds or savings under their belt have a hard time when they DO move out suddenly realise it wasnt a wise choice. But not because the career is art. Its because any starting job doesnt allow for living alone. Not in this economy.
Which goes back to that stereotype of a failing artist.
Listen when you put your mind to something you WILL achieve it. It will be hard there will be hurdles but if you have the determination and perseverance you. will. achieve. your goals. With help or without. Whether its in your 20s, or your 30s, maybe even 50s. Life doesnt end at 20.
But theres still this one thing that nags me. Because growing up (and im sure others can relate) all the negativity from family only spurred me on. I was going to be successful in one way or another. And you know what? Im proud of where i am. I have a job in the industry with 3 years under my belt now. I have an online shop and can table at cons. Im part of a local group where we sell our art. And, I am part of a gallery now. Im pretty stable, and I am happy. I havent moved out but Im building my savings until I can.
And you know what my family tells me?
"Why dont you become an accountant since this isnt working out?"
Its this paradox of wanting to prove yourself to someone who will never see you as equal, who is never going to see the world through the eyes of an artist and opportunist (because lets be honest, thats what we are) and watch you succeed and climb and do things they once told you were unachievable.... And then still hold your hand and gently ask you, with eyes filled with pity and worry for things which dont exist, if maybe you should consider an office job instead.

It was Christmas Eve and Ari was missing you after only two days. The gym was open until noon and Bobby and the other trainer, Mitchell, jumped at the chance for overtime.
Many of their clients wanted an excuse to eat more at Christmas dinner. Ari shook his head. People went to great lengths to not feel guilty about everything, including celebrations.
As a result, you were missed by your personal training clients today, but you deserved the time off to visit family for the holidays, you were the hardest working trainer at RSDR Training, aside from Ari.
Ari checked his phone and realized that he hadn’t had any word from you. He debated texting; you were a grown woman, after all, but he was worried so he did it.
After thirty minutes and no response, he called you.
In your living room, you stared at the call and watched the time as you waited for it to stop ringing. 10:37 am. You just wanted to stay on the couch all day eating cheese puffs and sleeping. Fuck the holidays.
You breathed a sigh of relief when the phone stopped, pulled your weighted blanket over you head and continued to wish for sleep and/or oblivion.
But your mind, which was drowning in negative thoughts, could not stay sunk as you thought of Ari calling you. He was your best friend in the city and had been nothing but supportive of you over the last eight months of working together.
Your heart beat faster, and thoughts of his smile would not let you continue to wallow in your feelings.
You sat up, sighed, and dialed him back.
“Kitten?”
“Ari? Hey, yeah. I saw that you called.”
Ari didn’t know that he was holding his breath until he heard your voice and exhaled.
“I did. I was just checking on you. You said you’d send me a text when you got home, and pics?”
There was an awkward silence. Ari felt dumb. You were probably too busy celebrating to worry about him.
“Sorry to interrupt your good time. I’ll let you go…”
“Ari, wait. I’m… not in Philly. My mom called while I was on the way to the train station. She got back her ex and told me they were going to Aspen for the holiday with his family instead.”
“That sucks.”
Ari knew that your relationship with your mother was strained because of your step father, but that’s about all he knew.
“Yeah. She invited me, but I'm not going anywhere he is. I thought she was finally going to leave him.”
“Wow. I’m sorry, Kitten.”
Ari felt the gut punch for you. And you had just broken up with that joker Patrick last month. You had to be lonely.
“So… what are you doing tonight?”
You couldn’t help but smile into the phone. Ari always tried to cheer you up.
“Nothing. Riding the couch. Eating junk.”
You picked up a half spilled bag of Cheetos.
Ari cleared his throat at the thought of you riding anything.
“Well, get off the couch. We’re coming over to celebrate with you.”
“Ari…”
“We’ll bring food from Little Bangkok…”
“But…”
“Don’t want to hear another word. We’ll bring everything.”
You stopped trying to argue. Attempting to stop Ari when he was on a mission was impossible. He would find a way around any obstacle.
“Ok…”
“That’s my girl! We'll be there as soon as possible.”
You didn’t know why you were smiling when you hung up the phone. Maybe it was because Ari called you his girl. But that wasn’t a big deal. You were buddies. He was your boy.
But then you looked around your studio apartment. It was a mess. You needed to clean up. You should have time to do a quick sweep and shower before Ari closed up shop at noon…
An hour and a half later, you were in the shower when you thought you heard a noise. You turned off the water to hear someone knocking on your door. You picked up your phone and saw that it was just 12:15. It couldn’t be them.

Where is the fifth dimension?
Dear family of light,
The fifth dimension isn't a place you go; it's the quality of consciousness you carry wherever you are. It is the open heart that welcomes with love all things, good and bad. It is complete acceptance of reality as it is, without judgement. It is perfect peace and joy at the moment because you recognized a greater presence within you than your ego.
Entering the fifth dimension means becoming one with the entire universe, being one with God. The fifth dimension is not heaven; it is the Kingdom of Heaven on Earth. Exists in a timeless time and space that is beyond human comprehension. It is beautiful beyond imagination, a place of peace, love and joy. That's why when you enter into the higher state of consciousness called "theta", you experience miracles, visions, creativity and genius.
The fifth dimension is home to wonderful beings who are waiting for our return. They are our spiritual guides who will help us evolve to higher states of consciousness. These beings have been with us all our lives, but we could not see them because we were not in tune with them or the frequency they emit.
It’s an eternal mental state that exists beyond birth and death. Although you may have come into this world with some lessons to learn and challenges to overcome, these challenges are not obstacles or barriers, but rather opportunities to see life from a broader perspective.
You must also learn to see yourself from this same perspective and realize that your human body and personality are only temporary containers for your true essence: pure awareness or unconditional consciousness.
The Fifth Dimension exists in the present moment because only here can you experience true peace and joy. When your attention is focused on the past, you are reliving old problems and painful memories; when your thoughts are focused on the future, you are filled with worry about what might happen next.
To be completely in the here and now, use all of your senses to experience life. Nothing is more important than this. Be alive and feel alive. If you're only half alive, you won't know what's going on. When you are not with yourself, you cannot know who you are.
Here are some tips to help you live totally in the present moment:
1) Don’t be afraid of anything: Fear is a sign of weakness and immaturity. Grow beyond it; otherwise you’ll never know freedom or joy.
2) Don’t let circumstances disturb you: there is nothing that can threaten your inner peace and happiness except your prison of negative emotions like anger and fear.
3) Stop thinking about the past or worrying about the future: they do not exist now. The past has already happened and the future is yet to happen; both are illusions. Thinking about them, you miss living in the present moment, which is the real life itself, because this moment only happens once. You can't have that again. So live it hard right now!
4) Stay in the present moment instead of dreaming of things that may never happen or remembering things that have already passed; they have no reality in the eternal now.
This is the moment of your life. Every moment should be so full and so intense that it makes you feel like you've never lived before and that you'll never live this way again. If you can live totally and live intensely in every moment, your life will become a series of golden moments and you will never die because dying means living in the past or living in the future.
The only real life is now.
We are born and die at this very moment. We enjoy life then we die. What's the point of living if you can't live totally? The fifth dimension is a continuous party, where everything is possible. There is no more fear because there is no more death. You are free from all limitations; your mind is as expansive as the sky. In this world there are no suffering, diseases, disappointments and everyone lives in harmony with each other and with nature. It’s a world of abundance and prosperity where everyone enjoys a deep sense of peace and happiness in their hearts. In this world, there can be no conflicts or wars because, in the fifth dimension, there is only unity of mind and unity of heart.
People who have entered the Fifth Dimension can see clearly and fully experience every moment of their lives. They know the secret of eternal youth: there is nothing to get old if you live every moment to the fullest of its potential. When you reach this stage of your evolution, you will be able to perform miracles beyond your wildest imagination - miracles that will amaze you as much as they will amaze others.
The fifth dimension is a state of being that goes beyond all physicality you’ve known so far. It's a dimension of pure love consciousness.
To enter this state, we must practice love by giving it unconditionally and forgiving others unconditionally so that we can feel our immortality more strongly.
The world is your mirror. It reflects who you are. If you love, if you are kind, if you are generous, if you are caring, the world will be loving, kind, generous and caring with you. The world is not a punishment place; the world is full of love. The only way we experience punishment in the world is when we punish ourselves with our unhealed thoughts, perspectives, and emotions.
Every moment in time exists as a perfect pearl. One of the things that happens when you enter the Fifth Dimension is that time for you stops because there's no time there; now everything is eternal. So, in that wonderful realm of eternity, where everything is one and where everything happens at once, there is no time for unhappiness, stress, fear, pain; there is only peace, love and joy - pure blissful joy!

Hi Jen,
I hope this finds you well. I’m sixteen and I’m seeking advice. I am mostly feminine, but in the last year I’ve become increasingly uncomfortable with that, which has given me a sense of whiplash. I’ll be perfectly fine wearing a skirt and revealing top one moment, and then feel like I want to jump out of my skin the next. I know it’s normal to not have all the answers at my age, but it doesn’t make it any less frustrating.
I live in a progressive city and was raised in a relatively accepting home, but I still struggle with my identity and have a hard time feeling comfortable with the word “gay.” I’m out to a few friends (some straight and some LGBT), but I still feel so alone. This, of course, makes me feel awful, because I recognize what a privileged situation I am in compared to a lot of lesbians, and I feel as though I “should” be more accepting of myself, i.e. I end up feeling guilty because I feel bad. Plus I’m all jumbled up about masculinity vs feminity… the point is, I could really use some advice from an older lesbian. I don’t know any of those in real life (actually, now that I think about it, I’m not sure that I know *any* lesbians at all in my personal life, which is pretty sad), and that makes it hard to envision any type of future for myself.

It always makes me sad to read that young lesbians don't know any older ones in real life because I remember how isolating that felt. It was definitely one of the reasons I struggled so hard to be even just neutral about my sexuality and why I misunderstood being butch for so many years.
The butch/femme and masc/feminine discourse has gotten a bit out of control in large part due to the internet and social media. If you don't have real life intergenerational connections it can feel like ALL lesbians are on one side or the other of a very black and white line and that is just not the reality of real life.
I would say the majority of lesbians are "garden variety" or in the "comfy" zone of neither butch nor femme or neither masc or feminine. Just women who are lesbians and exist on the human level of having characteristics that are both stereotypical and non stereotypical as far as what culture assigns to us based on sex. Even butches and femmes do no necessarily check all the “boxes” the world thinks we should.
My lesbians friends who are not butch or femme are comfortable in a wide range of clothing and hair cuts and it just depends on what suits them at the moment. Once we get a little experience under our belts out in the world we seem to learn to wear what is both comfortable and utilitarian without worrying about the perception of the outside world. When it comes to dressing up for an occasion like a date or an event I wear what makes ME feel best and while still balancing that with what I think women might find me attractive in. I think it is a normal, common thought process shared with most other humans. We can choose what makes us feel good and still want to look good for others, especially other women.
I can assure you that, all jokes aside, no one can take your lesbian card for clothing choices, hair cuts or any other aesthetics. Your sexual orientation is what makes you a lesbian. Everything else is just being human. Don’t mistake the community or experiences you might share (or not share) with other lesbians as a requirement of your lesbianism. Those are perks but not necessary.
If you were sitting in your lawn chair by a fire pit with a variety of other lesbians you would hear many stories about how we struggled with being okay with our sexual orientation and it is not necessarily dependent on any support or lack thereof that we received. While an aggressively negative or anti homosexual home life, family or religious background can certainly make accepting ourselves much harder, even those of us whose family and friends were neutral or supportive had internal obstacles to overcome.
Few humans are free from the affects of the outside world, even before social media. In my youth, movies, tv, magazine and my peer group all had some backwards ideas about what being a lesbian is and applied incorrect moral ideals to it. I had to put in the work myself for many years to come to terms with being same sex attracted in a world that attached negativity to such relationships. Once I had lesbian friends, especially older ones I saw hope in my future.
You are okay just as you are. Your personality, aesthetic choices and hobbies do not have any affect on your sexual attraction and orientation so be you, enjoy what you like and be honest with yourself about what kind of woman you want to love and be loved by.
I hope you find some lesbian friends of many ages. In the meantime my tiktok might help you see that lesbian life can be full of happiness, friendships and variety.

But you made me realize that Jamil death might be the perfect chance. Even if his family found a substitute, no one could make up for Kalim's shortcomings and understand his strengths like Jamil did. Even if someone that capable existed, he wouldn't let them get close enough to find out. So I think he would try to manage everything by himself, maybe even abusing magic to work around all those obstacles that are beyond his abilities. He would start to live a life similar to Jamil's, with little space for rest or peace, even though he clearly isn't cut out for it.
So it probably wouldn't happen right away, but eventually his stressful lifestyle and the lingering sorrow (maybe even guilt, if he feels responsible) over Jamil's death would lead to him overblotting. It wouldn't matter if his Phantom consumed him. Jamil always gave all he had without esitation, so it's only fair that he keeps doing all he can, even if it kills him.

Yeah, but the thing about overblot is that it doesn’t seem to always need both emotional distress and overuse of magic to occur: Leona didn’t use much magic when he overblotted I think, and Vil’s overblot happened for the most part due to him being severely overstressed and frustrated; that’s why I assume that just losing Jamil, who is the dearest person to him, could be enough for Kalim to snap. But then again, overblots are supposed to be rare, but it’d just show just how painful it was to him to lose Jamil.
But the scenario that you’ve described is also possible, because Kalim’s life is definitely going to change drastically after losing Jamil. It doesn’t have to be an immediate thing, and the changes in his life and actions, especially with the addition of despair and guilt, would absolutely affect him.

🗨️ you’ve received a letter from saki!
dear reader,
has 2023 treated you well? have you been well? did you enjoy christmas with your family and friends, and are you holding any celebrations for the end of another year?
i hope that you have felt endless amounts of joy during this time, laughed at both dumb and witty jokes, and filled your stomach with delicious food. i hope that your families are doing well and are smiling lots, and that your friends are also having the best times of their lives.
i’m sure that this year has been different for all of us. for some of us, it may have been the beginning of a new chapter, and for some of us, it may have been the end of an era. or maybe your 2023 was something in between, or both. for those of you who started something new this year, i hope that you find yourselves in a comfortable and safe position in this new place. and for those of you who have ended a chapter, i hope you’ve made thousands of memories that your heart will forever hold. i understand that goodbyes are tough—i’ve only ever been good at saying ‘hello’, and my ‘bye’s have always been a little bit tearful—but remember, after every goodbye, there’s always a ‘hello’ will follow shortly after.
this year, we’ve all grown. whether it be physical growth, mental growth, or emotional growth—we’ve all grown. if you don’t believe me, think about all the experiences you’ve been through this year. experiences change you, especially tough ones, because they force you to adapt to certain situations for the better. 2023, for me, was filled with a bit of everything. i’ve mastered cooking this chinese dish, finally memorised the lyrics to a korean song, and learnt that i must respect myself in every relationship i find myself in—platonic and romantic. you too, would have learnt a few things this year also. appreciate all these lessons you’ve learnt this year, and i hope that you carry them with you for the rest of your life, so that maybe, you can share with others what you’ve learnt in the future.
but sometimes it’s difficult to perceive negative experiences as something positive. perhaps this year, you’ve been hurt by someone dear to you, experienced a loss that you never thought you would lose, or “disappointed” yourself in some way. in those situations, it’s hard to keep a smile on your face, and it’s hard to appreciate the better things in life when you’re in the middle of an obstacle, but you are so strong, and i am so so proud of you. you are an individual capable of so many things in life, and i am always rooting for you with every bit of my heart. every little achievement you make—whether it’s winning an award, being able to look at yourself in the mirror without any feelings of dissatisfaction, or being able to stay productive for five hours, i am here cheering for you for every little accomplishment you make.
next year, in 2024, we will continue to grow too. personally, i want to become a better writer who can communicate her ideas fluidly, and be able to continue to share my hobby with you. i hope that we can all achieve our goals and dreams, and if not, i hope that we can at least walk a few steps closer to where we want to be. maybe it’l take some time, but we’ll get there.
i’ve hoped for a lot of things already, but i am wishing us all a happy and healthy 2024. may your year be filled with wide smiles and hearty laughs, and that it will shine brighter than any sparkler. thank you for all the love i’ve received here on tumblr, and i’ll make sure to continue giving you all even more love next year.
