Algae and Forensics
If you watch a lot of crime shows, you may have seen algae being used to help solve a crime. In Dexter, the algae on the victims was used to determine the port they came from, which led them to Dexter. Or Hannibal, where the algae led the FBI to Miriam Lass. A lot of crime shows play forensics up, but algae actually can be an important tool for helping solve a crime.
The presence of algae, or lack thereof, can tell us several things. Is there algae present in the closed organs of the decedent? If so, that tells you they were drowned or whether or not they were taken to a second location. What kind of algae? This can help us determine fairly accurately where the victim was drowned. This doesn't include bathwater or water with too few diatoms, such as ice water.
But how? Let's look into that.
Tumblr media
First off, I will be using the term "Diatoms." If you are unaware, diatoms are a type of photosynthesising algae, so I will be using the terms interchangeably.
There are over 15,000 species of algae living in brackish, fresh water, and sea water. Ponds, lakes, rivers, oceans, and coastal areas all have different diatom communities, and using that we can identify where the victim might have been killed.
When you drown, liquid is aspirated into the lungs and enters the bloodstream through alveoli. This lets particles such as sediments, microorganisms, or pollen to be carried to organs and deposited in capillaries. This means that diatoms can be found in the organs of a drown victim.
So, if diatoms are found in distant organs or closed systems and are of a great abundance, the cause of death is most likely due to ante-mortem drowning. This lets us know that the victim was drowned and was not just dumped posthumously.
Thanks to diatoms acid resistant sillica shell, they can easily be separated from tissue using acid-digestive extractions, and they are detectable in burned or putrified corpses. This means that drowning as a cause of death could be determined in a burnt victim that was taken to a second location.
Tumblr media
Algae is also being researched for its use as a time of death indicator. A study was conducted by forensic scientists, who found the diversity of algae on piglet bodies in water tended to decrease over time with a peak in diatoms recorded after 1-8 days of decomposition. This kind of work remains largely experimental, but it has the potential to be used for establishing a timeline since death (or submersion) in water.
Algae can be useful for linking criminals to their crime scenes, as diatoms can transfer onto clothing or footwear. Comparing microflora with the diatoms found could also give you a general area or type of water they were drowned in, as a swamp would have different algae than say, the ocean.
This evidence isn't damning in and of itself, but all evidence at a crime scene is valuable for solving the crime, and as such, algae can be an important part of forensics.
Thanks for reading! Have a good day and a cup of tea :)

Every Taika Waititi film ranked by how much I liked them, while I count down the days to the release of Next Goal Wins (my most anticipated movie of the year!)
DISCLAIMER: I like all Taika Waititi films, so don't get angry at me
7. Thor: Ragnarok (2017)
Tumblr media
Fun and colourful, I love Korg, Jeff Goldblum is great, but to me this is just a Marvel movie. Sorry, Marvel fans, this movie was just OK.
6. Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Tumblr media
More fun and colourful than Ragnarok, loved Christian Bale, loved the kids, loved Jane Foster's arc (I thought it was well handled!). There was a bit too much Korg, I admit. People say this movie had too many jokes and didn't take itself seriously enough. Well, of course it didn't! It's a movie about gods and aliens and stuff in space! Honestly it was a blast and I liked it better than the third one. I said what I said.
5. JoJo Rabbit (2019)
Tumblr media
This is a great film, we all know that. It speaks really well of Taika's filmography that it's so down on the list. It was hilarious and adorable and important. I feel like the comedy-drama could have been better balanced, I couldn't fully connect emotionally. Still, it was great and hilarious, the parody aspects were really well done and I really liked it.
4. Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Tumblr media
This one is really funny, it doesn't get enough credit for how funny it is. I loved the too leads, especially Sam Neill, I wasn't sure how well he'd fit into Taika's style, but he was fantastic. A really fun film.
3. Eagle vs Shark (2007)
Tumblr media
All Eagle vs Shark haters are wrong, this film is great. Lily is the most adorable person, Jarrod is a dick but played with so much love that you can't help but emphatize with him and hope that he gets a redemption. The story was so sweet, I was actually, like, 'awww'ing out lout at times. Also the small town vibes and the awkwardness, and the feeling of having a giant crush on someone you have never really spoken to, it's all so real, I really love it.
2. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)
Tumblr media
That I didn't rank this as number 1 is a surprise even to myself. This is one of my favourite movies and maybe my favourite comedy film of all time. I love the show as well, but to be honest I think the film is much much better. It's just- the vibes, man. The documentary aspect is fantastic. Also, Stu.
1. Boy (2010)
Tumblr media
This movie feels like being told a secret, it's so personal. It is small and self-contained, but at the same time it creates a world so huge and lived-in that it's hard to believe it wasn't really filmed in the eighties. The kids are adorable, the scenery is so beautiful, the story is so heartfelt and full of emotions it genuinely made me cry (not for anything in particular, just everything had been done with so much love, it made me feel so many emotions and they could only escape through tears). It is Taika Waititi's masterpiece. Where he usually leans more into the comedy, here he lets the seriousness take over when necessary, and it really works so well. I just love this film, it is amazing, go watch it right now.
...and that's it. Taika Waititi is probably my favorite director at the moment, he's got a vision and is very good at realising it. He writes heartfelt and funny stories, likeable characters, amazing dialoge and his films always look very pretty. Totally recoment any of the ones in this list!

i won’t even lie to you guys, the finale left me feeling preeeetty fucking disappointed. don’t get me wrong, i have so much love for that show and it means the world to me. it taught me so much and spoke to me so deeply but that finale left me pretty salty. i watched it when it came out & i’ve been mulling over it for a minute now but it just feels so.. forced? rushed? incomplete?
the team got some sort of closure and that’s great, love that, but i feel like we didn’t get any. it feels so incomplete to me. like when you’re about to have a bomb ass orgasm and then you move the vibrator the wrong way and it’s just gone.
the show felt so drawn out, so carefully planned and deliberate. then just so rushed and smushed together at the end. like how you start on a school project early and then leave it sitting for a while and finish it all the night before.
i absolutely love ted lasso & everything else about the show, and will absolutely continue to write, and run this blog but i needed to get that off my chest 🫠
i have lots of wips i promise i’ll get them up soon, halfway through this summer semester from hell but just be patient with me!! love you guys! 😚

The person asking about how the U.K. is for Arabs/Muslims - come to the West Midlands! Birmingham and the surrounding areas are super diverse and multicultural, barely anyone would bat an eyelid.
yeah!! i lived in birmingham for a couple of years and it's a really great place despite its cultural status :-(

there was a deal on proton ultimate so i got it (i was already paying for fancy protonmail so it wasn't that much of a cost increase, and i wanted to consolidate more inboxes because i have four domains and i'm lazy)
so i've been using protonvpn and so far it's miles ahead of mozilla vpn. sorry to mozilla vpn but. it kind of sucked to use. the whole time i used it. it didn't even work like half the time. i have no idea why. win10, win11, android. mozilla vpn seemed to hate them all. but protonvpn i just hit the quick connect button and it works.

Y’all, I am a single brainworm wiggle away from attempting a Babylon 5 fic...
It won’t interrupt any of my SoC stuff or anything, but...idk I guess I felt I should mention the possibility (aka the inevitable reality).
