Hello again, everyone...

Firstly, in case you have not heard it today...no, you are not required to stop creating for a fandom the moment its most recent update goes away, because if that were true, I don't think any of us would be here right now if those who came before us thought that the Original Trilogy were "just movies", and should not have been thought about or discussed outside the cinema.

And while we're on the subject, you might have noticed just now that the list is a bit shorter today, but it's not without good reason: I've been working on a few fanfiction updates of my own, namely stories/chapters that focus on Captain Howzer, Omega, and Wrecker, so I look forward to sharing them with you as soon as I am able.

My Favorite Feminist Anime TV Show List (with the Best Female Leads)

Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit

This is one of my all time favorite animes in general and always gives me a thrill on a rewatch, especially if you enjoy high fantasy and historical fiction - the 30 something year old lead Balsa is a surprise for a female lead in her genre, is not only a seasoned warrior but a compelling woman with a fascinating history.

Little Witch Academia

Like the classic witch school trope? Little Witch Academia brings all the charm of Hogwarts while being unabashedly feminist, following a predominantly female cast who, under the influence of the charming and zany female lead, Ako, strive to achieve their and their friends dreams (with lots of chaos along the way).

Fruits Basket

Known for it's slow burn romance and dreamy male shapeshifters, the feminist themes in this beloved anime are often overlooked. But, that's a mistake; the messaging IS there and what a lovely (and varied) female cast does this show have to offer, each character nuanced in her own expression of female. Maybe even more impressively, Fruits Basket acknowledges the value of female friendship and doesn't degrade it in the name of romance, an uncommon (but wildly valuable) theme in modern pop culture.

The Story of Saiunkoku

If you enjoy something historical but prefer Shojo, this Anime is the one for you! And, unlike many other Shojo Animes that feature mainly male casts, The Story of Saiunkoku avoids toxic tropes - Shurei, the show's lead is so spunky and entrepreneuring I find myself supporting her though thick and thin and she is hands down my favorite character in the show, an unusual statement from me when it comes to male dominant historical fantasy.

Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken

Want a show that's super zany and divide of ANY gender stereotyping? And maybe (like me) you love all things artsy? Well, this little Anime is the show for you (and a hidden gem to boot)! Following High School Animation Club Eizouken this Anime is all about wild imagination and the struggles of getting things done - while following a almost completely female cast.

Sailor Moon Crystal

I kind of couldn't include this show on my list, it's so very quintessential! Sailor Moon is the most famous female super hero story out there, and for good reason - it blazed a trail for female representation. While the fandom as a whole can be complicated - it walks a thin line between empowered and problematic - this specific adaption focuses on the story and action over romance or style, making it my favorite Sailor Moon adaption. It's well worth a visit :)

So, there we go! Hopefully this post inspired critical thinking of what makes an anime feminist AND convinced fans old and new there are places for everyone in Anime fandoms. I know I personally struggle to find myself represented in mainstream media (and I know I've got it easier then most) so these empowered shows have given me a lot - and hopefully have something to give you :)

My List of Favorite Japanese Anime

To me the ideal work of anime in a well crafted feature film, with a clear story arch, compelling characters, and unique and stunning animation. These are pretty high standards and not everything makes the cut; you'll notice a limited numbers of titles on my list. This is because I consider myself an anime conisuerrier (one who enjoys with discrimination and appreciation of subtleties) instead of an otaku or anime fan. The world of Japanese animation is broad and wonderful, however, (no matter it's darker sides), and if your favorite work didn't make it on my list don't take it personally, our individuality when it comes to fandoms is what makes us so beautifully diverse.
