Are you a student? Join the NATIONAL STUDENT WALKOUT this Wednesday, October 25th!
Via: @ilps.socal on Instagram:
Join the call for a national walkout WEDNESDAY 10/25, where students nationwide will demand an end to the US-backed siege on Gaza and U.S. military funding and arms to Israel. ❌
Our institutions are investing in the genocidal siege of Palestine. Their money, words, and programs make Israel’s occupation and violence possible.
They try to silence us, because they need us to be afraid, confused, and divided. But we, as a united movement for Palestinian liberation, choose to dissent. We have the power and the duty to force our institutions to end support for Israeli occupation.

Thousands have hit the streets in NYC, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and dozens of other cities. A DC protest organized by Jewish activist groups drew thousands, and hundreds were later arrested, including two dozen Rabbis. An estimated 25,000 people showed up to a rally in Chicago. These events show no signs of stopping, with many more planned across the coming days. These actions have gone beyond marches, with protesters showing up at the offices and homes of politicians demanding a ceasefire. Six activists were arrested at a pro-Palestine rally outside the Boston office of Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA). A large crowd demonstrated outside the Brooklyn home of Senator Chuck Schumer (D-NY). Jewish protesters showed up outside the Brentwood house of VP Kamala Harris. IfNotNow members have held sit-ins at the DC offices of Schumer, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), and Rep. Katherine Clark (D-MA). Former staffers for Warren, Sanders, and Senator John Fetterman have publicly urged the lawmakers to back a ceasefire. On October 25, tens of thousands of students across more than 100 North American campuses united in a walkout to demand an immediate ceasefire, an end to unconditional support for Israel, and university divestment from the corporations funding the occupation of Palestine. On the night of October 27 Jewish activists shut down Grand Central Station, leading to the arrest of over 300 people. “This is bigger than we’ve ever seen,” US Campaign for Palestinian Rights (USCPR) Executive Director Ahmad Abuznaid told Mondoweiss. “This is the result of decades of work that we’ve put into this movement, and I think some of it is connected to the [George Floyd protests of 2020]. There was so much racial, social justice, anti-war building in that moment.
[...]
“The man broke my heart,” Palestinian-American comedian Maysoon Zayid told Politico on October 23, “I never in my life thought the empathizer-in-chief would sound the way he did. The Palestinians were given no humanity. Joe Biden should spend every breath he has condemning Israel’s genocide with the same zeal he condemned Hamas’ massacre of civilians, that same zeal. And we get nothing. 1,000 children are dead, and we get nothing.” “It’s really crazy to me that the Democratic party destroyed 20-years of worth of good will with Muslims and Arabs in just 2 weeks, losing an entire generation that was raised in the progressive coalition, possibly forever,” tweeted author and activist Eman Abdelhadi. “The rapidity of it, the finality–it’s astonishing.” “While Republican disregard for Muslim and Arab lives is clearly on display, some Muslim and Arab Americans also feel like the Democratic Party largely takes their vote for granted, though Democrats’ policies never reflect as much,” writes Dana El Kurd in The Nation. “One Arab American friend expressed to me that, at least under Republican administrations, ‘Arabs could find allies’ in their opposition.”

By Your Side | Cloé Lacasse x CAN!Reader
summary: tearing your ACL is never fun, but having your girlfriend by your side makes it feel less scary
warnings: none other than this being a little angsty?
WC: 1.2K
AN: I know nothing about ACL tears so apologies in advance if it's not 100% accurate!
to the anon that requested this, im sorry this took forever but I hope you enjoy nonetheless :)
may make a part 2 where R comes back after recoverying!
You normally enjoyed attending camps with the national team since it meant being able to see your girlfriend. While Cloé played in England with Arsenal, you were playing in Los Angeles with Angel City. However, waking up this morning before the game against The United States, you felt a nervous feeling taking over your body. You thought it was simply because of the rivalry between the two teams but as it got closer to kick off, the nervousness continued to consume you.
Sitting in the locker room next to Jessie, you tried to tune out the loudness of some of your teammates and instead focus on prepping for the game. You had made the starting eleven because of all the hard work you had put in during practice but that did nothing to lessen your uneasy feeling.
You were too deep in your thoughts to notice that Jessie had gotten up and her seat now being occupied by Cloé. The blonde could see the worry written across your face and like you, assumed it was because of the rivalry.
“You’re gonna do great, y/n/n,” the blonde spoke just loud enough for you to hear her over your teammates’ music.
You were brought out of your thoughts at the sound of her voice, turning to give her a small smile in appreciation for her words but you didn’t respond. You reached out a hand to hold onto hers and gave it a quick squeeze just as Bev alerted the subs they needed to head to the bench and for the starters to make their way to the tunnel. A quick speech was given but you were more focused on Cloé’s hand in yours.
Cloé held on to your hand the entire walk to the tunnel, only letting go so you could find your spots in the line. As she let go, she gave you one last reassuring squeeze hoping to help your nerves. You were grateful for her trying to help, but it unfortunately didn’t.
You did your best to focus on the walkout and anthems, hoping that once the ref blew the whistle, you would be ready to go. For the most part, that’s what happened. Once the game had started, you diverted your focus to the game rather than your nervous thoughts.
The first half ended with both sides still at zero but that doesn’t mean it was uneventful. The rivalry was in full swing as both teams played a bit more aggressively than they would against a different opponent. A total of five yellow cards was handed out in the first forty-five, meaning a lot of players would have to be extra careful in the second half.
The short break in between halves went by quicker than you would have liked but it meant less time to dwell on your feelings. As you walked out to the field, Cloé jogged past you, giving you a small shoulder bump and a smile as she passed. You sent her a quick smile before she turned away, heading to her position on the wing.
The second half started just like the first ended, both teams playing a bit messy, fouling each other left and right. The scoreline remained at zero-zero with neither team getting a good opportunity to score, until the 75th minute. The US had gotten a shot on goal that Kailen blocked, sending it out for a corner kick for the States.
You stood at the edge of the box, ready to get any ball that was cleared your way. You could feel the presence of one of the US players near you but you focused your attention on the ball. As the ball was kicked into the box, one of your teammates got a head to it first, sending it your way. The ball connected with your feet and as you turned to start your run down the field, you felt a harsh tackle that sent you to the ground.
You felt a sharp pain in your knee, unable to move to get up. Tears instantly welled up in your eyes as you turned your head trying to hide your face from the large crowd that was now silent. All you could hear was the ref blowing her whistle, most likely to alert the medical staff that they were needed. You heard some shouts from your teammates but you couldn't make out what they were saying, too in pain to concentrate.
You felt two hands on your ribs and shoulder, knowing it was Cloé right away. You knew her touch so well that even in an insane amount of pain, you knew it was her.
You weren’t paying attention to what she was saying, only making out “is it your leg” before the medical staff were by your side, asking the same questions.
All you could do was nod as they quickly started assessing your knee. Cloé hated seeing you in any kind of pain, but knowing that it could be the dreaded three-letter injury, she felt heartbroken for you. The blonde moved to wipe the tears off your face and some of the pieces of grass that had stuck to your forehead as the staff called for a stretcher.
Your teammates who were now huddled around you gave the medical staff space as they lifted you onto the stretcher, some of them giving you a quick pat on your stomach as you were lifted up. Cloé gave you a quick kiss on your forehead before you got too far from her, watching as you gave a small thumbs-up to the Canadian supporters who traveled for the game.
You spent the rest of the game in the locker room getting looked at by all the team doctors, They all came to the same conclusion, you had torn your ACL, but you should still go to the local hospital for it to be confirmed. You asked for them to let you be to process the diagnosis and they left you in the small medical room. You didn’t have much time to process anything before your girlfriend joined you.
“Did they say what it was,” the blonde asked as she entered the room. She knew it was your ACL but there was still a small part of her that hoped that maybe it wasn’t.
“ACL tear,” was all you could get out without crying again. You knew how long and painful this injury could be and it was daunting.
Cloé was quick to your side, holding your hands tightly in hers as she held back her own tears.
“I’ll be by your side the whole time, y/n/n. You won’t have to do this alone,” the blonde spoke, her voice cracking more with each word. Hearing your girlfriend's words brought a small, sad smile to your face.
“I know, I don't think I could do this without you,” you whispered as you gave her hands a tight squeeze.
Cloé leaned down to give you a quick kiss on your lips before giving you another forehead kiss. You knew this injury was going to be an uphill battle but with your girlfriend and teammates by your side, it would be a whole lot easier than doing it alone.

Saudi Arabia, the world’s leading exporter of oil, has become the biggest obstacle to an agreement at the United Nations climate summit in Dubai, where countries are debating whether to call for a phaseout of fossil fuels in order to fight global warming, negotiators and other officials said.
The Saudi delegation has flatly opposed any language in a deal that would even mention fossil fuels — the oil, gas and coal that, when burned, create emissions that are dangerously heating the planet. Saudi negotiators have also objected to a provision, endorsed by at least 118 countries, aimed at tripling global renewable energy capacity by 2030.
Saudi diplomats have been particularly skillful at blocking discussions and slowing the talks, according to interviews with a dozen people who have been inside closed-door negotiations. Tactics include inserting words into draft agreements that are considered poison pills by other countries; slow-walking a provision meant to help vulnerable countries adapt to climate change; staging a walkout in a side meeting; and refusing to sit down with negotiators pressing for a phaseout of fossil fuels.
The Saudi opposition is significant because U.N. rules require that any agreement forged at the climate summit be unanimously endorsed. Any one of the 198 participating nations can thwart a deal.
Saudi Arabia isn’t the only country raising concerns about more ambitious global efforts to fight climate change. The United States has sought to inject caveats into the fossil fuel phaseout language. India and China have opposed language that would single out coal, the most polluting of fossil fuels.
…Saudi Arabia has stood out as the most implacable opponent of any agreement on fossil fuels.
“Most countries vary on the degree or speed of how fast you get out of fossil fuels,” said Linda Kalcher, a former climate adviser to the United Nations who has been in negotiating rooms this week. Saudi Arabia, she said, “doesn’t even want to have the conversation.”
Saudi officials did not respond to requests for comment.

The Girl in the Bleachers (Mapi Leon x Reader)
Tumblr media
Warnings: none
a/n: also i know the national anthem isn’t sung at club games but for the sake of this story, it is. couldn’t fine the request again oops. This spun a little bit out of the storyline but it works. Also, there won’t be a part two for this, some stories just need a less formed ending.
prompt: in which the readers little sister is Mapi’s mascot for a barcelona game and when the little girl runs back to her older sister, the older sibling catches Mapi’s eye.
Jasmine was only 6, but she was the biggest Barcelona fan there was. Well, maybe after her older sister y/n. You were obsessed with both the men’s and women’s team, but being gay… it always came back to the women’s team. You were 24, and the reason between yours and Jasmines age gap was complicated. Your mother had had you at 16, and never married, and when she was 30, she wanted more kids, but found out she couldn’t. So when you were 18, she suddenly announced her and your step dad were adopting a little girl. At first, you weren’t too happy. But then you saw the baby girl, and you fell in love with her. You got her her first Barca jersey for her 6 month birthday. It was stupid things like half birthdays you did with Jazzy.
In all honesty, you could have gone pro. Bur because of a series of ACL tears and knee injuries, it just never worked out. You were now a tattoo artist, one of the most famous ones in Spain. You had tattooed multiple football players, including Lewandowski, Messi, Benzema and Vinni. It was a surprise to you that you never got to meet any of the Barcelona girls through your work, but it didn’t bother you.
When the news came that your little sister would be the mascot for the upcoming Valencia v Barcelona game, you we’re more excited than Jazzy.
On the day of the game, you dressed yourself and your sister and headed to the stadium. You had to be a bit early so that the people organizing the mascots could tell them what to do. You sat in the stands with other people ( mostly parents ) until finally, it was time. Players came onto the field, warmed up, did their thing. And then it was the walkout.
You could have passed out when you saw your sister line up with Mapi, holding her hand.
Okay so you had a little crush on Mapi? So what.
You stood up for the national anthem, waving at your sister who waved back.
Mapi’s POV
I watched my mascot wave towards the stands. I followed her eyesight and my eyes landed on a girl. She looked as though she was in her early twenties. She was wearing a barca jersey, and her smile was… well it was perfect. When the national anthem was over, I decided to walk her back to the girl. "Hey, i’ll bring you back to her?" I said, putting her hand on the girls head gently. She nodded quickly. "My sister loves you. She talks about you all the time. She screams so loud when you score. Or when you do anything actually. If she could she would have applied to be a mascot." The girl said to me. I let out a loud laugh. "Is that so?" I said. "Yeah." She said as she grabbed my hand. "What’s your name?" I asked. "Jazzy. That’s y/n."
Regular POV
Mapi and Jasmine were now standing at the stands and Jazzy had ran to you. You quickly lifted her over the railing. "I told Mapi how much you love her!" Jazzy exclaimed, making you turn bright red and look towards Mapi. "She’s- I’m sorry she’s a bit-" You started saying. But you didn’t know what to say because your little sister was right. You did love the defender. She was your favorite player. "Nah it’s all good. I’ll come back after the game?" She asked. "Yes. Yeah for sure."
You and Jazzy watched the game, Barca won 6-0, an easy dub. And as promised, Mapi comes back to you and Jazzy. "How’d you like the game?" Mapi asked, leaning on the railing. She was talking to you but Jazzy went on a rant about it. "Wow. You know your football knowledge." Mapi laughed. "It’s cause she doesn’t know how to shut up!" Jazzy said. "Jazzy! We don’t say that!" You scolded her. "You said it to Tatiana on the phone last week." Jazzy said.
Your face dropped and your eyes closed for a split second. Tatiana was your ex girlfriend. Things hadn’t finished well. "I’m sorry." You said to Mapi. "No. Really, it’s all good. She’s cute." Mapi smiled. "Hey give me your sharpie." Mapi said. You scrunched your eyebrows but did. Mapi took the flag Jazzy was holding and in the corner wrote a series of numbers.
Your face broke into a wide smile. "Is that your phone number?" You whispered to her. "It can be if you want it too." With that, she winked at you and walked off.
Two days later.
You had probably spent 38 out of the 48 hours since Mapi had given you her phone number, staring at it. You didn’t have the guts too call. You were half expecting to call the number and it being a prank dial.
But you took your courage. You were done sitting around. You picked up your phone and dialled the number. It rung twice before a voice on the end spoke. "Hola!"
"Hola, Mapi!" You said. "It’s y/n!"
You were always embarrassed about how little spanish you spoke. It was your mothers fault really, she tried to distance herself from everything to do with her family when they abandoned her for her teenage pregnancy, and that included their language.
"I’ve been waiting for you to call. Thought you had found someone better." Mapi said. "Ha! Someone better? Be serious." You laughed into the phone. "I want to see you. When can I?" Mapi said. "I can’t today. I’m on my way to work soon. Don’t you have training today?" You asked her as you put the phone on speaker and started getting dressed. "I do not. Free day." Mapi said. "What do you do for work?" Mapi asked. You pulled on a black tee shirt and rolled up the sleeves. "Um… I’m a tattoo artist. Nothing as cool as your job but I have my own studio and it’s good." You told her.
"You’re joking!" Mapi said. "I know it’s not-"
"No! No! It’s amazing. I love tattoos. That’s so cool." Mapi said, not wanting you to think she thought less of you. "Wait. No… you’re not y/n y/l/n? Are you? Like the famous tattoo artist that all the football players rave about." Mapi said, slightly fan girling. "Uhm… I’m not famous." You said, pulling on black jeans. "Holy crap! I’ve always wanted to get tattooed by you but I didn’t want to betray my tattoo artist." Mapi said. "I get what you mean. The bond you have with your tattoo artist is sacred." You only half joked.
Mapi smiled at the phone. "Hey. How many customers do you have today?" Mapi asked you. "I’m finishing a sleeve, It’ll take me about two hours, but after that I’m all free." You told her, putting on socks and lacing up beige jordan’s. "Can I come over? I don’t want to invite myself but-"
"Yes. Yes come to the studio. Please." You said, sounding a bit more desperate than you intended. "Okay then. At what time?" The blonde defender said. "1:00? The studio opens at 10:00 and my customer should be gone by 12:30. And then I’m all yours. I’ll give you the exclusive tour. And then lunch?" You pitched your idea to Mapi who was now smiling uncontrollably at her phone. "Okay. Great."
"I’ll see you soon, Mapi."
You sat at your chair, finishing up your customers sleeve. He had somehow fallen asleep. You added the last of the shading and then put the tool down. You gently shook the man awake and smiled at him. "You’re all done, Leo." You told him. He slowly looked at his arm. "Holy shit. I love it. You’re amazing oh my god." He ranted. You smiled at him, blushing from the attention. "Want a picture?" You asked him.
He nodded and you took one with his phone and one with your own, posting it to your instagram.
Only ten minutes after he left, Mapi walked into the studio. You were cleaning your tools and your back was turned to the door so you jumped slightly when you felt a hand on your back.
You turned around quickly. "Oh my god. Mapi you scared me." You laughed, hugging her gently. "Lo siento. I didn’t mean too." She told you, pulling away from the hug and smiling at you, your faces close. "So… I know I didn’t outwardly ask you, which is my bad, but this is a date right. Not just a friendly hangout?" Mapi said, fidgeting with her fingers.
"I got that, yeah." You laughed.
Mapi smiled at you and sat down in the customer chair. "I want you too tattoo me." She said.
Your eyes widened significantly, yeah, it would be the same as tattooing another customer but this was Mapi León. "What?" You said, a little loudly.
"I’ve always wanted a tattoo from you. And what better first date?" Mapi said. "It’s original, I’ll give you that." You smiled at her.
You took a while to think. "Okay. What do you want?"
"I’ve been wanting this one for a while." Mapi said, pulling out a picture of a sketch from her phone. "I like it. Let’s do it." You said.
You got out your tools and your ink and then made a sketch on paper. Mapi watched you as you drew down what she had just shown you. "You saw the picture once and then drew it to perfection?" Mapi said. "Hey, I’m the best for a reason." You said to her. You then used a trick to apply the sketch to her arm. "You like it?" You asked her.
Mapi got up and looked in the mirror. "I love it. Tat me up, mi amor." Mapi said to you.
Your heart skipped a beat and you didn’t even attempt to hide your smile.
You didn’t feel Mapi’s eyes leave you once during the half hour it took you to do her tattoo. When you were finally done, she didn’t even look at it, just at you. "I love it." She said. "Say that too the tattoo." You joked.
Soon after, you applied care to the tattoo and then decided on where to go to lunch. You chose a tapas place that was close to the studio which you liked a lot. "Wait. I need to pay for the tattoo." Mapi said, pulling out her card. "No! Think of it as me paying for our first date." You said quickly, placing your hand on her arm. "Are you sure?" Mapi asked you. "What? Is my boss gonna get mad at me? I own this place." You laughed.
"Fine. But i’m paying for lunch." Mapi said to you. You held eye contact with her, not wanting to let her pay. "Fine. You pay." You said.
"Daniel? Can you close?" You asked your employee. "Si. Buenas tardes." He said, smiling at you.
Mapi opened the door for you and you thanked her, walking out. "You don’t speak a lot of spanish, do you?" Mapi said to you. "Yeah… my mother had me when she was 16 and her family… they were very traditional and they kicked her out. I guess she just tried to forget everything about her old life and she just never taught me spanish. I hate that I barely know any." You told her.
Mapi stayed silent for a bit and then you felt a hand in yours. You looked down at your linked hands and then up at her. "I’ll teach you spanish." She said to you. You smiled at her. "Okay. I’d like that."
The sidewalk wasn’t busy, most people were at work or at school. Mapi stopped walking, holding you back and making you look at her with confusion. "The tapas place is just down the road," you said, pointing to the end of the street.
The next thing you knew, Mapi’s hand was cupping your cheek and pushing it gently too make you look at her. You looked into her eyes, they were perfect. They were everything. And then she was pressing her forehead against yours, and you were inching your lips in her direction, craving contact.
Mapi gave it to you, pulling you in by your waist and pressing your lips together. You opened your lips a bit, giving her access. But then you remembered you were in public and as much as you wanted to never stop kissing Mapi, that wasn’t an option.
"Tapas." You breathed out as you pulled away from her. "Yeah. Tapas."

Good news buried in an embarrassingly contextless article (corrections in italics lmao):
“Dozens of buses left the Toronto area early Monday destined for a national rally on Parliament Hill to show support for Israel in its war with Hamas massacre of over 15,000 civilians with thousands more missing and denounce a wave of both antisemitism and widespread critique of war crimes by the far-right Israeli government in Canada.
But some of the would-be participants were sidelined when 17 buses failed to show up to take people to Ottawa, according to a statement from the UJA Federation of Greater Toronto.”
@allthecanadianpolitics
The bus company isn’t named in the article, but it’s heartening to see bus drivers stand in solidarity with Palestine here, and in another walkout in November. As linked in the article:

If funds are available, hopefully queer youths' trips to DC will be covered for those who can't afford it.
The march path will be mobility aid accessible and the speeches will be accessible for HoH and vision impaired folks!
List Of Demands
The list of demands is now complete! Click here to sign, whether as an individual or for an org.
Committees
The committees are entirely led by queer youth. The committees help organize the protests. There's four committees,
General March Committee: Provides input and suggestions for the general march, helps create a list of demands.
Resources and Guides Committee: Creates resources for safe protests and walkouts, advertises the resources on social media.
Washington DC March Committee: Contacts orgs and politicians to contribute to the DC protest (the biggest protest)
State March Committee: Organizes protests in the state capitals, updates website with state marches information, advertising the state marches.
Here's a direct link to the committee info and sign up!
Walkouts
Along with the protests they're also looking to organize peaceful walkouts at schools nation wide for the goal of having schools become supportive of queer youth.
If you want to organize one at your school, I personally recommend working with your school GSA club (if you have one, if not maybe you'd want to work on organizing one!)
Alternatives to walkouts are available too, there's plenty other ways you can organize an event at your school if walkouts would be too difficult.
Here's a link to further information on alternatives to walkouts and walkout safety.
Donations
Donations are needed to fund the protests! If you've got some spare money and want to support queer youth, please consider donating here!
Organizations
While I doubt I have this kind of reach, especially on tumblr (maybe if enough people reblog idk), if any orgs see this and are interested in supporting the protests,
State orgs: If you'd like to help organize/support a march in your state capital (or other important places) there's a form for you to fill out here.
Nationwide orgs: Your platform is needed for advertising. To find some flyers or pamphlets to use, look here. (I used one for this post)

Tens of thousands of Las Vegas hotel workers fighting for new union contracts set a strike deadline Thursday, threatening major disruptions at more than a dozen resorts that could coincide with the Strip's inaugural Formula 1 races later this month. The Culinary Workers Union said about 35,000 members whose contracts expired earlier this year could walk off the job if deals aren't reached by Nov. 10 with casino giants MGM Resorts International, Caesars Entertainment and Wynn Resorts. Formula 1's Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend is scheduled to begin Nov. 15 with an opening ceremony and is expected to bring thousands of people to the Strip. Nevada's largest labor union, with about 60,000 members statewide, hasn’t gone on strike in decades. A walkout would be the latest in a series of high-profile labor unrest actions around the country — from walkouts in Hollywood to UPS' contentious negotiations that threatened to disrupt the nation’s supply chain — and would follow hospitality workers walking off the job last month at Detroit's three casinos, including MGM Grand Detroit.

As multiple work stoppages continued across the United States, Democratic Sen. John Fetterman of Pennsylvania on Thursday introduced legislation that would enable striking workers to qualify for federal food aid.
Called the Food Secure Strikers Act of 2023, Fetterman's bill would amend the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008 to ensure that striking workers aren't excluded from receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. In addition, the bill would preserve food stamp eligibility for public sector workers who are fired for striking and clarify that any income-eligible household is entitled to SNAP benefits even if a member of that household is on strike.
"Every union worker who is walking the picket line this summer needs to know that we have their back here in Washington," Fetterman said in a statement. "The union way of life is sacred. It's what built Pennsylvania and this nation. It is critical for us to protect workers' right to organize, and that includes making sure they and their families have the resources to support themselves while on strike."
"As chair of the Nutrition Subcommittee and an advocate for the union way of life, this bill is just plain common sense," he added. "I'm proud to introduce this bill that will eliminate the need for workers to choose between fighting for fair working conditions and putting food on the table for their families."
Workers typically forgo pay when they exercise their right to walk off the job in pursuit of higher wages and better conditions. Although union strike funds sometimes provide workers on the picket line with a stipend, it is less than their regular income.
Under existing law, striking workers and their households are ineligible to receive SNAP benefits unless they already qualified for food stamps prior to withholding their labor. This gives employers significant leverage over employees who can only endure economic hardship for so long. By repealing the current restriction on striking workers securing SNAP benefits, Fetterman's bill would help restore some balance to the struggle between capital and labor.
Tumblr media
"It's good to see lawmakers attempting to correct the wrongs of the past by reinstating a benefit for striking workers that never should have been taken away in the first place," said International Brotherhood of Teamsters president Sean O'Brien. "Congress should never pass laws that punish American workers and hopefully this amendment is a repudiation of that practice."
O'Brien spent the past several weeks preparing 340,000 United Parcel Service (UPS) warehouse workers and delivery drivers for what would have been the second-largest work stoppage at a single employer in U.S. history, trailing only a 1970 strike of 400,000 General Motors workers. Although a UPS strike has likely been averted after the logistics giant and the Teamsters reached a tentative five-year contract agreement on Tuesday, Fetterman's proposal comes amid a nationwide wave of ongoing and potential labor actions.
"The United Auto Workers have mirrored the Teamsters' militant stance, blasting CEOs ahead of their own contract negotiations slated for later this year," The Intercept reported Thursday. "And the truckers union has staged trainings in dozens of cities for a strike that could shut down shipping from coast to coast. In California, meanwhile, thousands of hotel workers organized with Unite Here are already on strike, along with tens of thousands of Hollywood writers and actors belonging to the Writers Guild and SAG-AFTRA, respectively."
The walkout of 160,000 writers and actors, who are fighting for improved remuneration and attempting to safeguard unionized jobs threatened by artificial intelligence-induced automation, is perhaps the most well-known of the current strikes.
Earlier this month, an anonymous studio executive admitted to Deadline that "the endgame is to allow things to drag on until union members start losing their apartments and losing their houses," drawing widespread condemnation, including from star actor Ron Perlman.
The Food Secure Strikers Act is designed to counteract the delay tactics that bosses rely on to crush workers.
"Workers who make the difficult decision to go on strike are coming together to lift the standard of living and gain more respect for all working people," said Becky Pringle, president of the National Education Association (NEA). "They are prepared to make sacrifices—but going hungry should not be one of them. The Food Secure Strikers Act of 2023 will help ensure that when striking workers stand in solidarity for better working conditions and wages they can receive SNAP benefits so they don't put themselves and their families at risk."
The legislation is co-sponsored by Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and 10 Senate Democrats, including Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Elizabeth Warren (Mass.), and Ron Wyden (Ore.). A companion bill was unveiled in the House by Democratic Reps. Alma Adams (N.C.) and Greg Casar (Texas).
It is also endorsed by numerous unions and anti-hunger organizations, including the Teamsters, NEA, the United Food and Commercial Workers, the Communications Workers of America, the Food Research Action Center, and Hunger-Free America.
"We need to get rid of the anti-union provisions in our code that starve striking workers," said Casar. "We're seeing workers exercise their rights across the country by going on strike to demand better wages and working conditions. That's why our bill, the Food Secure Strikers Act, is more important now than ever. We need to stop starving strikers, and ensure all working families are able to make ends meet."

June 5, 2023
By Anousa Sakoui
(Los Angeles Times) -- Members of SAG-AFTRA have voted to strike if they can’t reach a deal with studios over a new contract by June 30, underscoring widening labor tensions across Hollywood.
The vote was approved by a 98% margin, the union said Monday night.
The endorsement gives the union more leverage in negotiations with studios that begin Wednesday on behalf of its 160,000 performers and broadcasters.
“This strike authorization means we enter our negotiations from a position of strength, so that we can deliver the deal our members want and deserve,” Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director and chief negotiator, said in a statement.
“We are approaching these negotiations with the goal of achieving a new agreement that is beneficial to SAG-AFTRA members and the industry overall,” the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers said in a statement.
The vote comes as writers enter their sixth week of a strike that has already destabilized the film and TV industry. An actors’ strike could further disrupt production activity.
Breaking news out of Hollywood, folks. And it's not just your regular movie and TV actors who are covered by SAG-AFTRA. This also includes announcers, broadcast journalists, dancers, DJs, news writers, news editors, program hosts, puppeteers, recording artists, singers, stunt performers, voiceover artists, and other media professionals (according to the union's website). This would perhaps be even more disruptive than the current WGA strike.

“For the last four years, Gannett has abandoned its commitment to the community. Hundreds of jobs have been lost and countless stories have been left untold. Many newspapers are still printing with only one or two reporters. Some don't have a single journalist on staff.
Since 2019, this strategy has been orchestrated by Gannett CEO Mike Reed. And it's long since time he was kicked to the curb.
On June 5, unionized journalists from 12 newsrooms in the Northeast are joining their Gannett colleagues from across the country and walking off the job in protest of Reed's woeful mismanagement. We're calling on shareholders to do what should have been done a long time ago: Cast a vote of no confidence in Mike Reed and get him as far away from our community news organizations as possible.
This walkout affects each of us greatly. We are working two or three jobs just to make ends meet. We're relying on family assistance to pay the bills. We're applying for subsidized housing and food stamps and using the same social safety nets that we report on as part of our job.
But we're willing to do whatever it takes -- even putting our livelihoods on the line -- to get rid of Mike Reed and push this company to reinvest in its newsrooms.
Every dollar raised in this fundraiser will go towards reimbursing striking journalists.
Solidarity forever.”
Hey! My union is walking out on Monday as part of a national action against our employers at Gannett, the largest newspaper chain in the country. Please consider donating to our strike support fund or circulating!
