This Is How I Can Still Win: How The Penroses Are Related to House Targaryen

SO. In case you don’t remember - you probably don’t, it’s a throwaway line and likely just George retconning and not doing it on purpose - Jeor Mormont misremembers Aelinor Penrose as being Aerys I’s sister instead of her cousin. Here’s the quote, from Jon I in A Clash of Kings:

"No, this was Aerys the First. The one Robert deposed was the second of that name.” “How long ago was this?” “Eighty years or close enough,” the Old Bear said, “and no, I still hadn’t been born, though Aemon had forged half a dozen links of his maester’s chain by then. Aerys wed his own sister, as the Targaryens were wont to do, and reigned for ten or twelve years."

Potentially, this means that Aelinor has ~the Valyrian look~ and that’s why Jeor got them mixed up. But when you look at the information surrounding the Penroses that existed in this era, it looks a little wonky because of this line from The Mystery Knight:

"At the crossing of the Mandel, he cut down the sons of Lady Penrose one by one. They say he spared the life of the youngest one as a kindness to his mother."

So how can Elaena marry Ronnel, Lord of the Parchments, only have one son, yet Quentyn Ball slew all of “Lady Penrose’s” sons? How is Aelinor related to the Penroses and the Targaryens? What woman of Targaryen blood would marry into this random ass house in the middle of Stormlands? Why was it so important to retcon Aelinor from a sister into a cousin? Well - let’s have a think about what other houses have recent Valyrian blood…we have some female lines after all…perhaps even Targaryen women that married into politically active houses, who would love to marry back into the main branch again…I wonder who that could be…..Oh what’s that? Is that-

DRAGON TWINS TIME.

Allow me to spin two family trees for you, one where Rhaena’s daughter marries into the Penroses, and one where Baela’s daughter marries into the Penroses:

(pls applaud me for the amount of math i did for this very unserious post!) green is a romantic/marriage line, black is a parental relationship.

I am noting that this would mean Alyssa (I made her name up btw, mostly because I thought it would piss Daemon off to have a Hightower named after his beloved mother) gives birth at around 34, which is a perfectly reasonable age to have a child at, and Laena gives birth at like 40, which is definitely a lil risky! BUT there’s plenty of time for Laena to have other children, and for a second born son to have had a child at that same age, so if you think it’s a stretch for Laena to have a kid at 40 (perfectly fair) just pretend there’s a son there named “Roland” or something as Aelinor’s dad and Laena’s second born.

Now, FIRST OF ALL, this makes the cousin thing make sense, but also it makes it deeply funny - Aelinor is Aerys’ great aunt’s granddaughter. That’s a close enough relationship that you would consider them a cousin but it’s also the exact relationship Robert has to Rhaegar (because Rhaegar is Robert’s great uncle’s grandson). Both Aerys and Robert avoiding incest/kinslaying on a technicality lol.

But SECOND OF ALL. Do you know what makes me absolutely fucjing feral about this. Alyn Velaryon is messing around with a woman so much younger than him. That she marries his GRANDSON. because SHE IS THE SAME AGE AS HIS GRANDSON. i feel like george is weird enough to do the Baela scenario too.

And LASTLY OF ALL. Notice there’s plenty of time for Alyssa/Laena aka Lady Penrose after she’s married, to have several sons for Quentyn Ball to slay on the Redgrass Field, including Elaena’s husband, Ronnel himself, and for Elaena’s son, Robin Penrose, to inherit the seat afterwards. It also means, since it’s mentioned that Elaena married Michael Manwoody soon after her second husband died, that the two of them got a long time together. Why is this important? Because Michael Manwoody was her marriage for love and I want Elaena to have been with him for a long time.

This scenario gives her like 9 years with Ronnel (kinda sad, their kids don’t get to know their dad very long) and a minimum of 15 years with Michael Manwoody, who is apparently not the step dad but the dad that stepped up.

When the teens finally get to sleep scary has a dream where she and willy perform that “evil like me” song from the first descendants movie, and yes, willy does wear a cheap maleficent costume the whole time, and no I do not receive criticism.

Letters

The Sixth Letter.

Timothée was about to open the sixth letter when his phone rang.

"Fuck," he muttered before answering the call.

“Timothée, are you ready? The car's already here," his manager said over the phone.

“Oh shit, I forgot," he mumbled. “Give me ten minutes.”

Timothée silently cursed himself. He forgot he was going back to New York.

He ended the call, then proceeded to get ready. He took a quick shower and put on some sweatpants and a sweater. He wasn't in the mood to dress up.

“Hurry up, Timothée!” His manager yelled from outside his hotel room. “Your flight is in an hour!”

“I'm coming!” He yelled back as he tried to fit his clothes in his suitcase. “Geez, you can't wait for a few minutes?” Timothée muttered under his breath.

“Timothée Chalamet, if you don't drag your ass out here in two minutes, we're leaving without you!”

“I'm here!” Timothée yelled, dragging his suitcase and backpack outside of the room.

“What took you so long? No, don't answer that. Come on, let's go!”

Timothée passed his suitcase to the hotel staff that was with his manager. The three then descended down to the lobby.

As Timothée was getting into the car, he realized something.

The letters! Y/n's letters!

He couldn't leave these behind, no matter what.

He hadn't finished her letters. He would be betraying her if he did't finish her letters.

“I'll be right back!” Like lightning, he quickly ran back into the hotel, back up to the receptionist. “I left something in the room!”

“What toom were you in?” The receptionist asked lazily.

“Room 1238.” He quickly answered. The receptionist gave him the keycard,

“Don't forget to bring it-” Before the receptionist could finish, Timothée was already dashing towards the elevator.

As soon as Timothée entered the room, he quickly searched the room. There it was: the basket of eighteen letters, Y/N's letters. He grabbed the letters and tied them up with the ribbon.

In a matter of seconds, Timothée was out of the door. He practically threw the keycard at the receptionist. He hopped into the car, the letters clutched in his hand.

It was funny how he already felt a sense of loyalty to this girl. He had never met her, yet he feels more than obligated to know her.

Timothée went through the letters, sorting them again by date. He opened the sixth letter, dated July 1, 2023.

Dear Timothée Chalamalabingbong,

Hey, did you miss me?

Yeah, as if.

I'm too damn delusional, sorry about that.

Anywho, I just saw the new trailer for Dune Part Two. And it's absolutely amazing!

I am absolutely excited for it! I can't wait to see it in theaters. Paul Atreides, my Lord, you can ruin my life if you want to.

Timothée loud out aloud, earning a weird look from his manager. “What's that?” she asked.

“Oh, nothing. Just fan mail.”

Did you know that you're fancasted as Regulus Black? I was shocked when I saw a video edit of Paul Atreides as Regulus Black.

I wasn't even interested in the younger Black brother, but boy, you changed everything.

Now I'm absolutely obsessed with a character you didn't even portray.

I can't wait for the Wonka trailer! I can't wait to see you as Willy Wonka.

You in a top hat? Boy, I'd fight a kid for a golden ticket.

You're so gorgeous, it actually hurts.

Timothée felt his cheeks burn. He was used to his fans thirsting for him. But this felt different.

Maybe it's because she only wrote eighteen letters, or maybe because she was pouring her heart out into her letters.

He wanted to find this girl. He wanted to understand why she stopped writing.

But how would he find her?

Timothée sighed as he put the letter back in its envelope. He silently vowed to find this mysterious girl.

No matter what.

hello! you mentioned before how Maereth is a descendant of one of Feanor's sons but you haven't revealed it yet and no one has guessed it yet either

in a spur of the moment (and adrenaline from lack of sleep and too much work) 🤣 i would like to take a guess... is it Maglor? I did some searching and it seems he is the only one among the sons to have been married and live long enough for Maereth be born around 553 years of the sun (based on the end notes of last chapter, greenleaf's day out)

(I hope I spelled the names correctly 😅)

I know this reply is a bit late, my Anon friend, but you have to believe me that I was MASSIVELY EXCITED so receive your message! I haven't been in a huge rush to make a big reveal about Elvenqueen Maereth, though a couple of other friends have shown interest in her "hidden identity". But it's been a year since I first started writing about her, and you are the first one to come forward with a guess about her lineage.

YOU ARE CORRECT! Mostly. Queen Maereth, beloved wife of Elvenking Thranduil, comes from the line of Fëanor through his second son, Maglor. But Maglor is not Maereth's father, but rather her maternal grandfather.

From her father's side, Maereth is actually half-Teleri, and is the granddaughter of another renowned elf-lord, Círdan! (In the SotWK AU, Círdan wed one of the granddaughters of Olwë, a Falmari who had done the unthinkable and crossed the Helcaraxë, following her cousin Galadriel.)

Ever wonder how Legolas (seemingly randomly) turned out to be a shipwright in the Fourth Age? There is your headcanon explanation. It's in his blood!

This also means the last ruler of Eryn Lasgalen, Thranduil's grandson and heir, Aranion, son of Mirion, carries the blood of all three groups of Calaquendi. (He has Vanyar blood from his mother, Itarildë.) Just one of my favorite bits of SotWK HC lore.

I would have to make a very long post (or several) to fully explain the lineage of Maereth. That's quite a project that will take some time. So for now, please enjoy the quick summary of her ancestry, along with my fancast for the OC and canon characters. <3

Dakota and Elle Fanning as Eliza and Georgiana Reed

Two young ladies appeared before me; one very tall, almost as tall as Miss Ingram—very thin too, with a sallow face and severe mien. There was something ascetic in her look, which was augmented by the extreme plainness of a straight-skirted, black, stuff dress, a starched linen collar, hair combed away from the temples, and the nun-like ornament of a string of ebony beads and a crucifix. This I felt sure was Eliza, though I could trace little resemblance to her former self in that elongated and colourless visage.

The other was as certainly Georgiana: but not the Georgiana I remembered—the slim and fairy-like girl of eleven. This was a full-blown, very plump damsel, fair as waxwork, with handsome and regular features, languishing blue eyes, and ringleted yellow hair. The hue of her dress was black too; but its fashion was so different from her sister’s—so much more flowing and becoming—it looked as stylish as the other’s looked puritanical.

Emma Mackie and Margot Robbie as Diana and Mary Rivers

I thought them so similar I could not tell where the old servant (for such I now concluded her to be) saw the difference. Both were fair complexioned and slenderly made; both possessed faces full of distinction and intelligence. One, to be sure, had hair a shade darker than the other, and there was a difference in their style of wearing it; Mary’s pale brown locks were parted and braided smooth: Diana’s duskier tresses covered her neck with thick curls.

I started drawing the og 16 lyctors firstly because I got inspired by other people's art and also because they're the characters that most fascinate me.

It started with me being silly but actually evolved into a ten-day art journey and while I wanna set some of these portraits on fire I thought I'd include them all to, hopefully, inspire someone.

I'll also be mentioning the fancast I used as inspiration, many of which I chose because ✨vibes✨ and nothing else. Here's a pinterest file of them all.

Gideon (Flo Rida) and Pyrrha (Salma Hayek). Valancy (Jamie Zella) and Cyrus (Drew Ray Tanner).

For some reason when thinking of Gideon, Flo Rida is what came to my mind... but trust me it works. Salma is just my favourite milf, I had to pick her for Pyrrha. For Valancy I heard curvy thicc and remember Jamie from Instagram so why not make her Asian and ginger? If Mercy gets her peach hair.

Ulysses (Jack Black/Harvey Guillen) and Titania (Jordan Daniels). Alfred (Shaun Evans) and Augustine (Peter Cushing).

Now, you can see I started struggling with the face claims, fail after fail. I did not do my girl Tits justice here, she looks too serious but trust me she's just so chill. I also sketched the Quinques too small, and when it was time to outline... poor Alfred suffered.

Cassiopeia (Alba Flores) and Nigella (Eiza Gonzallez). Loveday (Noémie Lenoir) and Cytherea (Isabelle Adjani).

Here is where I started having fun and was comfortable with the faceclaims, except for Nigella's. I chose a pretty woman to do justice to Mercy's words, but she was pretty in that modern conventional way I couldn't extract much from and ended up ruining her portrait. As an easter egg each pair of fancast speak the same languages.

Mercymorn (Sophie Marceu) and Cristabel (Sofia Coppola). Samael (César Domboy) and Anastasia (Mona Tougaard).

I was on a row here, even if they're not the best I could've done. I put some pressure on myself to do well on Mercy bc she's my favourite and do like how she turned out even if I picture her chubbier than my faceclaim.

Did I choose Coppola bc of that scene from The Godfather 3 with the veil? Yes. I also have the headcanon that Anastasia was a sturdier woman and slowly her descendency shrunk to Harrow size.

Beside each of the portraits I did a looser drawing of the pairs in ballpoint pen that I progressively put more thought into it, those are too ugly to show but the few last I really liked it.

She’s known Steph for nearly six years and they jokingly call themselves the ‘Science Twins’ - Alyssa sees her as a younger sister, and is incredibly protective over her, especially once she gains her powers, and is the one overseeing Steph’s training.

He doesn’t help directly with that, but is the one to alert them to the fact that there was another unknown energy source on the night of the explosion - which wasn’t thrown out by the accelerator.

He’s good friends with his cousins, though, and also jumped in to defend Brianna, excited (and proud) about her joining the Legends and hoping she’ll bring some old-school technology back with her.

One of Eliana’s adoptive aunts alongside her partner Hilda, they were both good friends of Lana Lang’s back on their Earth, and promised to look after Eliana if anything were to happen. Bridget is currently a councillor in Coast City as well as a metahuman with the ability to manipulate water, which is why she specialises in environmental issues as she can use her abilities to suss out where water is polluted or contaminated. She has always known that Eliana would one day become a hero, and though she worries for her is nonetheless determined to support her.

Bridget’s long-term partner and Eliana’s other aunt, she works at one of Coast City’s museums, a job she chose because she has the ability to tell the history of an object just by touching it. She was one of the first to realise what was happening on her Earth and worries about Eliana overworking herself by becoming a superhero on top of her studies to become an advocate for extraterrestial rights, but like Bridget is also supportive and willing to help her niece whenever she can.

Sophia Reynolds mother, a former ranch worker on Shadow, and one of Mal Reynolds closest friends, she was convinced that her life would be ruined when the man she was dating and in love with turned out not to care about her at all and left her days before she found out she was pregnant - she wanted to keep her child but couldn’t see how. Then Mal offered to marry her and take on the blame, which she accepted, and they spent seven happy years co-parenting before Mal left for war. She has always hated the Alliance, and this was solidified after she and her daughter ended up being one of only a handful of survivors from Shadow after the Alliance firebombed it - and though she never said so to her daughter she was convinced Mal was dead as well, killed in combat, and is relieved when it turns out he’s alive.

She adores Sophie and has a good relationship with Steve and Mark, often stepping in to look after Sophie when they were busy due to their work, to the extent that Sophie even has a room there.

A bard who specialises in the violin and loves nothing more than creating music, and a good friend of Áine an Tordarroch’s, she also happens to be a Żar-ptak - an Ember (or fire) bird- and is a few centuries old who has seen kingdoms rise and fall, and who has a terrible feeling about the rising threat of Nilfgaard. There are very few Firebirds left on the Continent, as they were often hunted for their blessings and then blamed for any misfortunes, which is why she made the choice to have a human form several decades before, and she rarely taps into her full power. Only very few people know what she truly is, but she makes the decision to tell Áine after it’s clear the Islander doesn’t hold the same prejudices, given her strong friendship with the witcher Eskel.

A Canadian with a degree in history who lectures at universities, Lia dated Sam Drake for several months in 1992 and was very much in love with him, but also realised that he wasn’t one to stay around - figuring that he wouldn’t want to be tied down with a kid, so she made the decision to part amiably from him in September of that year, despite being three months pregnant. She was, however, determined to keep the child - she got kicked out by her parents as a result, but her sister Sonya helped her out and she moved in with her, her brother-in-law Nicky, and her niece Sophia. She was a devoted mother, and always planned to tell Joanna more about her father at some point, but that day came sooner than expected when she fell gravely ill in 1996 and she asked Sonya to track down Sam, not wanting Joanna to be without a parent. She recovered and became friends with Sam again, but was devastated to find out he was killed on a job, as she still loved him. Since then, she has focused on her family and tried her best to make sure Joanna gets a legitimate job, not wanting her to go down the same path as her father.

About / FAQ

Hi! I don't know if you already know me from one of my other blogs, but hi, welcome to the party!

My name is Maddie/M (they/them). I’ve been a descendants fan since the first movie and after spending several years obsessing over it with my best friend, building headcanons and creating ocs and brainstorming fic ideas, I finally decided to brave the bigger world of the descendants fandom! I’m also a long time oc blog where I’ve been posting about descendants ocs for several years now, so while this is not an oc exclusive blog, I will be posting about my ocs here as well as about the general descendants universe!

Fair warning, it been a while since I read the books, I love the movies but they don’t always make the most sense, and I don’t consider Rise Of Red as canon. I mostly stick to relative-canon and just expand upon what we’re given, but there are a few things that I throw out and other headcanons that I just generally have that will show up throughout everything I come up with! You totally don’t have to agree with my ideas and I’m always happy to chat or hear about other perspectives, but I know that I stray from canon and I’m not going to stop doing that!

This blog will be run in equal parts by queue and by just posting things when I feel like it – if I can think of a fun queue tag to make it easier to tell those apart then I will tag accordingly, but so far no such tag exists so please be patient if I’m not immediately responsive, I might not be online, I might have gotten busy, or I might have just totally spaced out, please give me a couple of hours to a day before thinking I’m ignoring you!

I have a desktop masterlist right here, and then mobile friendly ones here ( a-k ) and here ( l-z )! Unless otherwise stated, my ocs all exist within their own bubbles and don’t overlap unless I pull one of them into another verse just as background/filler characters!

Fancast List

I stick to the canon casting from the first 3 movies but for book characters and parents, I’ve spent a long time creating my perfect fancast. My fancy desktop cast list is here, my mobile friendly cast lists are here (the kids) and here (the adults)!

Crossovers etc

I can be a bit iffy about descendants crossovers just because of my extensive non-canon worldbuilding, but I’m always happy to chat! Please don’t use my ocs without permission (there are some that I’m cool with being thrown in as background characters for fic filler and others that I’m really not), I’m open to general crossover chats, and I’m tentatively open to rp ( I have an rp blog as well but it isn’t descendants exclusive/specific )

Can I find you anywhere else?

I do have a full navigation page here, but as a quick overview! I tag all of my ocs as oc: [ first name ] and canon characters as canon: [ first name ] ( exceptions being Davy Jones, Evil Queen, Jane darling, and characters who only have one name or a title and name, in which case I just use that name )

I also have tags for edits ( and specific tags for art, gifs, graphics, videos, and writing ), fancasting, headcanons, ocs, personal, shipping, world building ( and auradon & isle specific world building ), and miscellaneous nonsense!

( yes they are all unnecessarily long but they are also all descendants quotes so I’m okay with that )

Fanon

So I’m not going to shit on Fanon, sometimes I absolutely love fanon and I love how passionate the descendants fandom in particular is, especially over characters that have barely any content! However I spent years developing my personal descendants hcs and ocs in a void with my friend before I even started talking about my descendants ocs on that blog, and even longer before I even tried getting involved in the bigger fandom, and this is part of why! I fully support everyone’s rights to their own headcanons and I don’t necessarily think that mine are objectively superior, but I’m also not going to change my own take on this universe! Like I said with canon, I’m always happy to chat and hear about other perspectives and ideas, but I’m going to keep doing my own thing!

I also pull from other Disney franchises that aren’t part of the descendants universe, and I veer on and off from which live action movies I adopt into my canon!
