the humble "like" is oft mocked despite what it does for us. "like, three people" is a vastly different statement from "three people". "and i was like 'what the fuck'" is vastly different from "and i said 'what the fuck'". i love you "like" and anyone who says you make people sound stupid will be killed on sight

A South London resident waters the vegetables planted on the roof of her Anderson shelter.
In 1938, with the outbreak of World War II on the horizon, Sir John Anderson was placed in charge of air-raid preparations in Britain. He commissioned engineers to design a cheap and simple shelter which could be distributed to the population, the result was the Anderson Shelter. Although the shelter would not provide protection from a direct hit for example, it would protect those within from the deadly flying debris and shrapnel produced during attacks.
Six feet tall, 6.5 feet long, and 4.5 feet wide, the corrugated metal shelters were a snug fit for a family of six. They were buried four feet under owner’s gardens and their arched roofs covered with a layer of soil.
The shelters were distributed for free to poorer residents. Wealthier residents could purchase one for a small fee.
Many chose to incorporate the shelters into their gardens, planting vegetables and flowers on top of them. Residents even held competitions for prettiest shelter.
By the time the Blitz began, over 2 million Anderson shelters had been erected.

we still get immediately shoved out of our immersion in tv shows or films when The Girl find a dead body and immediately shrieks - we just don't find it realistic because we're pretty confident most people would gasp rather than shriek (i.e. sharp inhale rather than sharp exhale) and it also feels unnecessarily (and predictably) misogynistic too, as men encountering corpses almost never do the same on screen
also of course please do tell us if you've actually encountered a corpse unexpectedly, because tumblr is absolutely a place where some people have done this thing and we love a good anecdote
suddenly imagining "burst into song" as a potential response

Some Questions to Ask When Things Go Wrong
1. Is this something I should take seriously and try to put right; is it something that is worth working on, and investing more energy on?
2. How much is my fault? Is it something I can change further down the road?
3. How much is outside my control; will anything I do really alter the situation or make a lasting difference?
4. Have I done everything I possibly can? Have I tried and exhausted all possible options?
5. Is it something I should put behind me, and decide to walk away from?
6. Who else has gone through a similar experience, or had this happen to them? Who can I talk to who will understand, and give me valuable help and advice?
7. What can I learn from this experience?
8. How can I build myself up again, so I have the needed strength to go forward in my life?

One piece of advice I have is to have your house cleaning routine be on the same day every week and set yourself an expectation of doing the bare minimum plus one extra thing. That way the extra things get done occasionally as necessary without all piling up until you have to spend an entire day cleaning the baseboards and scrubbing the oven

Being a young adult is so strange. You enter a coffee shop. The 20 year old girl waiting behind you cried all night because she just came to a new city for university and she feels so alone. That 27 year old guy over there works a job he is overqualified for, he lives with his parents and wants to move out but doesn’t know what to do about it. That one 24 year old dude already has a car, a house, and a job waiting for him once he graduates thanks to his dad’s connections. The 26 year old barista couldn’t complete his higher education because he has to work and take care of his family. The 28 year old girl sitting next to you has no friends to go out with so she is texting her mother. That couple (both 25 years old) are married and the girl is pregnant. The 29 year old writing something on her laptop has realized that she chose the wrong major so she is trying to start all over. We are not alone in this, but we are actually so alone. Do you feel me

heard you cried last night and I know why I heard you cried last night and so did I
Why did you make us part I'm so alone, why did you take my heart You didn't want it for your own
And if you hadn't cared to make amends I might have never dared; we'd be just friends, So calm your fears and dry your tears
Come kiss the girl you adore Now you can smile tonight and cry no more.
