I feel like I cannot fully explain it, but there is something so different in the way how in Mizumono Hannibal wants to kill Jack and threats Alana in comparison to how he hurts Will and kills Abigail. Besides his oblivious feelings for Will, in the way he “chases” Jack and Alana I can clearly see that terrifying the Chesapeake Ripper, the ruthless predator. But when he hurts Will? That scary murderer is gone, he is so heartbroken, that in my opinion he looks at least a few years older than he in fact is. He is so soft and vulnerable. His attitude changes again after:
Hannibal: Do you believe you could change me, the way I've changed you? Will: I already did.
Hannibal knows that Will is right and he didn't see the change within himself coming, he didn't want anyone allow to change him, but it happened, so he threw a tantrum and killed Abigail in front of Will to make a point.
So many different emotions showed only like in fifteen minutes. Something wonderful and terrifying.

now. i know what you're thinking. i know. "kallie oh my god let this quote die". but no. because i've had yet another thought.
"achilles, lamenting the death of patroclus. whenever he’s mentioned in the iliad, patroclus seems to be defined by his empathy."
"he became achilles on the field of war. he died for him there, wearing his armor."
i think by now we've all already seen the posts or recognized that hannibal and will have swapped clothes for the battle between them and dolarhyde. if not, here's a nifty little visual (2x13 mizumono, 3x10 ...and the woman clothed in the sun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and if you're like me, you'd think "oh that's really sweet. he's wearing hannibal's shirt. it shows their lines beginning to blur". but you know what else it shows?
"[...] he died for him there, wearing his armor."
will went into war (the fight against dolarhyde) wearing hannibal's armor, and he (presumably) died there. he died in hannibal's armor, as patroclus died in achilles'.
and even THEN.
"he did. hiding and revealing identity is a constant theme throughout the greek epics."
"as are battle-tested friendships."
where will embraces his becoming, and steps into himself - where he casts off the persona of the man he'd been displaying and reveals who he really is underneath, which is a very constant theme throughout hannibal and will's relationship ― the battle to see each other, to understand.
"achilles wished all greeks would die, so that he and patroclus could conquer troy alone. took divine intervention to bring them down."
if you know me then you know, of course, i love love love the religious symbolism that hannibal is drenched in. and i think it's a very lovely parallel to the fact that hannibal, who sees himself as above but so intertwined with religion, and views will as his god, went to his death with the very man he worshipped.
you know. divine intervention.

sometimes i wonder what would have happened at the end of mizumono if Will had said something before Hannibal gutted him.
Hannibal is childish, the end of mizumono is evident of that. it’s him having a tantrum because Will broke his trust, his heart. His mind is split down the middle, one that’s half a man with intelligence leaking into a plethora of different fields and the other half is the boy in the snow all those years ago. when it comes to feelings revolving around love and betrayal, he’s not sure what to do, how to hold himself or live with those emotions. mostly in regards to someone like Will. someone who goes against all of Hannibal’s morals.
so he acts out childishly.
yet like a child, i wonder if Hannibal would have changed his thoughts if Will had apologized and explained himself. told Hannibal all he wanted was to go with him. that he had made a mistake. if Will had talked to him, would Hannibal have forgiven him without violence? without the expense of abigail?

There's so much to be said about the line "They know" in Mizumono. It has so many different meanings. "They" is so many people.
Will is saying "Jack knows you're the Chesapeake Ripper".
Will is saying "Kade Prurnell and the FBI know we're all breaking the law."
Will is saying "Alana knows about you, about us."
But when you say the word "they", you talk about others. It's someone else. It's exclusive of the speaker. And isn't that the kicker? They all knew something. They all had goals.
Jack's goal was to kill and/or apprehend Hannibal.
The FBI's goal was to take in Jack and Will.
Alana's goal was to protect Will and herself.
But Will says "They know" because he isn't included in any of this knowledge. He doesn't have a clear goal. He doesn't know what he wants. Not until it's too late.
Did you notice in Mizumono that when Will gets out of the cab at Hannibal's house, he gets out sort of slow and unsure, but still relatively calm, until he sees Alana laying on the front walk? Then he hurries. Then he seems alert. Then he gets out his gun. It's a quick change. He's panicking because these people who are alive and with him are hurt.
Then boom, another quick change, because Abigail, who was thought dead and separated from him, is not hurt, she's here, and suddenly so is Hannibal, and the regret is replaced with panic. How did this happen? How is Abigail alive? Why didn't they leave? Why aren't they safe and far from here?
And you know why?
It's because Hannibal and Abigail, they know. They know (or at the very least Hannibal did) that Will betrayed them. They know that Will was supposed to be with them. And they know that it can not be that way, not now.
And Will, the double agent, the loyal soldier and the lovesick fool, he was blind. He did not know. He couldn't have.

shut the fuck up why did i never realize that the heart tableau was held up by three swords. like the three of swords tarot card that represents heartbreak, sorrow, and betrayal. WOW
i think its also notable that when the three of swords is reversed (which is how it technically looks in the tableau), it represents optimism, forgiveness, and healing.
"In the reversed case, those three swords now point up, with their tips intertwined like they were poles holding up a tent. The heart has still been pierced, but the swords seem to have stopped the heart’s fall. And best of all, the dark clouds of the upright card are now pillowy and soft ground that is much safer." (x) — in mizumono, the betrayal was revealed and reciprocated, which would be represented by an upright three of swords (not to mention the clouds and rain in the background of the card, like when hannibal left everyone for dead, walking out into the rain). in primavera, hannibal displays the heart tableau — the reversed three of swords — for will. it says "you broke my heart, but i still forgive you (represented by the reversed three of swords), like i said. i can move past this. can you?" we are reminded of what he said in mizumono: "i forgive you, will. will you forgive me?" yes. will finds him in the catacombs and tells him: "i forgive you." and despite the betrayal and heartbreak, they move past the events of mizumono. and betrayal has reversed to become forgiveness, once again.

I spent the longest time wondering why Hannibal had an affair with Alana. Mads says that Hannibal doesn’t lie emotionally, but obviously he’s in love with Will when we see him sleep with Alana on the show.
The way I see it, Hannibal’s attracted to Alana and even cares about her. Not the way he cares about Will, but he does care. In Mizumono, he gives her the chance to run, to escape and pretend that nothing ever happened. She doesn’t take that chance, but this proves that he doesn’t want to kill her.
This got me thinking about the lack of physical intimacy between Hannibal and Will (oh yeah big shock right). Beyond the meta of making a kiss or actual sex “too obvious,” I wholeheartedly believe that canonically, Will and Hannibal wouldn’t have had physical intimacy during the plot of the show.
Hannibal never hoped to let Alana “know him” or “see him” (cries grossly). So sex with her was less important.
Will, however, did get to know Hannibal completely. During season two Hannibal held NOTHING back from Will. He trusted him so much that he caught Freddie’s scent on Will and still decided to trust him.
But maybe Hannibal didn’t want to give Will everything until he was absolutely sure Will would give him everything back. I’m 5774822882% positive that if Will had gone through with it and ran away with Will and Hannibal, that would have been the closure Hannibal needed (and they would have fucked in the bathroom on the plane).
As it was, they ended up engaged in a whole different type of penetration in Hannibal’s kitchen (I have been waiting to make that joke for too long). That’s why Hannibal and Will never made love. Because even if Hannibal trusted Will entirely, he wanted Will to sacrifice every chance to betray him before giving him everything.
Imagine how devastated Hannibal would have been if he’d slept with Will and then been betrayed. It would have shattered his heart.

Hannibal song of the day : song no. 5
a bit about the song:
"Breezeblocks"(released in 2012) is song by alt-J, written by Thom Sonny Green, Gwilym Sainsbury, Gus Unger-Hamilton & Joe Newman(the whole group), most likely their most popular song. It starts off mellow and quiet guitar, interchanging between build ups and drops with synthesisers and a lot of deep bass, drums and other percussion instruments till the end of the song, which ends with an arrangement of overlapping vocals, like a choir. It fits genres like indie rock, indie pop, art rock and folktronica. The song itself tells a story of two lovers, where one of them wants to leave the relationship, feeling unsafe and unfulfilled but the other is obsessive and deranged and so in love that they don't let the other leave, the desire and love being so strong that they dare to hurt their lover and themselves just to make them stay. There can be another meaning to the song when taking the music video into the account(that the group themselves said is kind of different but managed to fit the vibe), which is filmed in reverse, presenting a narrative where a man kills a woman(maybe an ex or smth) who was most likely keeping his wife hostage. Since the chain of events is presented in reverse, it looks as if the man is the abusive lover trying to kill his wife, although by the end we find out he was actually defending his wife and killed the woman that kidnapped his wife, sending a message to not judge a book by its cover - don't assume and judge until you know the full story. It also references a book "Where the Wild Things Are" by Maurice Sendak, talking about a young boy who misbehaved badly at home and got scolded for it. His hostile and intense emotions sent him to an imaginary jungle with creatures called "The Wild Things". In this world, he feels appreciated and powerful as the wild things make him a king, but as soon as he realises the responsibilities a king has are hard, he wants to leave and go back home, to his loving mother who took care of him and coudl depend on, but the creatures don't want him to leave, threatening cannibalism (woah i wonder why I am writing this), saying "Oh, please don’t go! We’ll eat you whole! We love you so!". The band thought of it as a very powerful image and referenced these words in the song. In the end, the boy does manage to get away, unlike the lover of this song.
yeah sorry for the long intro to the song um. i've loved this song for years I swear I could listen to it forever so.
overall the song creates such a chilling mix between aggression and affection it's just so fucking insane and well. very hannigram. I think that was expected. Tbh i feel like it's prob known to fannibals, i made a post once asking ppl for song recommendations for hannibal and this song has shown up a few times and honestly? it fits them SO. WELL. especially when you think about the whole mizumono episode. The music video reminded me of mizumono a lot... so I'll be basing this on that episode a lot...
Pardon me for the pain i'm gonna provide today<3
------------------------------
Verse 1
"She may contain the urge to run away But hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks"
The girl doesn't want to be in the relationship with the man anymore, maybe recognizing that he is not in a good state of mind or she just believes they're not fit for each other anymore, whichever it is, she is contemplating getting out of the relationship, which she feels trapped in, or the man feels like he's scaring her away, hence her "running away"; He doesn't like this, being way too attached for her, he can't just let her run away after the comfort she brought him and the strong emotions he developed towards her, so he decided to weigh her down (literally) by drowning her with breezeblocks. Metaphorically, Breezeblocks are blocks used for building houses and are supposed to represent foundation here, so perhaps he has been making her stay by guilt tripping her about everything that they have built together and the fact that she can't just "leave behind" the trust, support, stability and safety that they have gained from each other - the foundation of their relationship. After she wasn't giving her idea of leaving up, he decided to actually weight her down with their foundation in forms of breezeblocks. In my eyes, the soggy clothes could also have a little bit of meaning, soggy clothes being quite uncomfortable and probably clinging to her(just like he does) - perhaps they're soggy from the times he was guilt tripping her, perhaps tears were shed and her clothes getting soggy just represent the manipulation and fakeness of them, or the severity of the situation and how long it has been going on and how this has affected her (made her feel heavy at heart and uncomfortable)
I think these lyrics summarise THE monologue in Mizumono and hannigram's plans quite perfectly. Will wanting to run away (from hannibal unfortunately...) and as Hannibal realised his plan of betrayal, reacted very aggressively by literally gutting him (sogging his clothes with blood ig) and breaking down the foundation they have built, more or so with words, but also the knife he uses. At this point I have no idea if its a linoleum knife (knife used for building, houses, rugs and FOUNDATIONS OF A BUILDING.) or a kerambit or smth else but I'll stick to the linoleum here(also check out this post about his choice for the knife, it drives me fucking insane) and say that this is how Hannibal tears down the foundation they have built together. Not only does he gut him, he talks to Will about how betrayed he feels that he was planning to leave him, after letting Will see him, after building this foundation of trust and support for each other. Hannibal was there, understanding Will and offering support and stability and he saw that Will could provide it for him back, which he chose to do only to get closer to him to betray him and take away his happiness (Will...) and stable, carefully crafted life he had. Will was something very important to Hannibal, a person that changed him and made him feel love for once, and then he lied about accepting him. He can't handle losing Will so he would make him stay and tear him down, hurt him, if that's what it would take.
"Cetirizine, your fever’s gripped me again Never kisses, all you ever send are fullstops (La la la la)"
Citrizine is a medicine used for fevers, suggesting the man is so obsessed with her that she makes him ill and stressed (overheated and overwhelmed and overthinking, hence the fever) and he needs medicine. She is constantly rejecting him, rejecting his affections and never giving any to him but instead stopping him, although it can also allude to texts, her not ending them with "xx" (kisses) but with full stops, being quite cold and distant with him.
well first, for the show it can allude to how Hannibal literally gave Will a fever and the amount of aspirin Will took cuz of that if we take this literally, but that mean the roles would have to switch so, instead in my eyes I think of how bothered and overwhelmed Will probably made Hannibal feel the more interested and obsessive he got over Will. I can't imagine how many times this man probably thought of him everyday and overthought stuff (jesus seriously hes obsessed) and how ill and diseased (although alive) Hannibal probably felt (maybe diseased and ill after he knew Will's plan...); the affections the girl is rejecting from her lover could represent how distant Will was with Hannibal at first.
"Do you know where the wild things go? They go along to take your honey (La la la la)"
This is a reference from the book "Where the Wild Things Are". The band suggested that the lyrics are about jealousy, the protagonist being jealous of other people who are catching his lovers attention instead of him, maybe this is a conversation between them about this concern, telling his lover that those people are bad and will use her and leave her(take away her honey); Maybe he's trying to convince her that he would never do that - although he technically is, eating away at whatever support and love(the honey) she has to offer for him.
I feel like this presents why Hannibal decided to isolate Will in the first place, taking away everything from him (or at least how he wants Will to see it, as we know that he was just trying to make his plan come true and return some of the things Will cared about so much). He saw everything that Will had interest in (Alana, Abigail, although he kept her for Will, Margot's child etc) as a threat to his plan of having Will all to himself and so he took them away - because he believed that they were both bad for Will but also because they were not in Hannibal's best interest. Also doesn't he like kill Will's wife in season 3 idk yet dont tell me
"Break down, now weep, build up breakfast Now let’s eat, my love, my love, love, love (La la la la)"
This probably references the many fights the couple had and protagonist's method of trying to make it up to her by trying to get back into a loving, normal routine, forgetting the fights, doing things such as letting her sleep it off and making a breakfast, starting the day over - The breakfast being his love for her. This is most likely to say that acts of service for her would be his love language and he would feel loved if she accepted his services, as well as offerings(his love) he makes for her.
for Hannibal:
Tumblr media
do i like. have to explain this one
first of all lets be real cooking and making ppl commit accidental cannibalism is his love language (even better when they are aware of it and accept it knowingly so u dont have to make them commit accidental cannibalism to feel like u're normal for enjoying it and ure not a monster and God didn't punish u by making u eat ur own sister and enjoy it and that they accept and understand u for this and are def not doing it as a manipulation tactic to get u closer to them... that's not smth Will would do to Hannibal wdym)
------------------------------
Chorus
"Muscle to muscle and toe to toe The fear has gripped me, but here I go My heart sinks as I jump up Your hand grips hand as my eyes shut And I, ah-ah-ah-ah"
The chorus seems to depict the the physical fight going between the two lovers. The protagonist doesn't seem to be in his right mind as he says that even though the fear tried to stop him, he has lost control and is now hurting his loved one (or himself) - His fear of rejection making him not handle this situation well and taking the last leap of faith to "save" the relationship by physically forcing her into it. The harm can either be to himself or her, maybe threatenening suicide and her gripping his hand to stop him, or him hitting her and her trying to deflect his hand with her own.
For Hannibal, it's literally,,gutting Will. Or any physical fight or holding each other at gun point or any murder attempt they had. In mizumono, Hannibal is visibly heartbroken by Will's decisions, maybe regretting the choices hes about to take. Maybe for once he felt some fear hurting another person, the person being Will, but he pushes through it, knowing it had to be done, to show Will how he made him feel. The physical contact in this chorus could represent the hug that they shared (the most heartbreaking hug in tv history). His feelings seem to contrast with the violence in that scene so much it makes me so fucking depressed
------------------------------
Verse 2
"[...}She bruises, coughs, she splutters pistol shots Hold her down with soggy clothes and breezeblocks"
The words have a violent imagery to them, maybe to show the lover fighting back and still not agreeing to stay, maybe even trying to hurt him, her words feeling like pistol shots to him, or it could represent her drowning, trying to catch a breath. If that's what is happening, then he tries to remind himself of his point and to not help her, because she will run away - it's better to hold her down and make her stay.
Will's most common weapons is a gun or his hands and words, so i guess it fits his image quite well(not to mention the amounts of time he held Hannibal at gun point lol). These clearly never seemed to have affected Hannibal (until the last supper) and he continues through with his plan of taking everything away from Will, showing what he has lost by not staying by Hannibal's side.
"She’s morphine, queen of my vaccine My love, my love, love, love (La la la la)"
The protagonist compares her to morphine, a drug used to help with pain - clearly he is very dependent on her and uses her for emotional stability and support, losing that would make him insecure and breakdown, he can't lose her after the vulnerability he shared with her. This also fits with the expression "Love is a drug", which to him, her love is clearly like a drug, he has become obsessed, needing her love all the time, addicted to her, suggesting the intensity of emotions she makes him feel and just how obsessed he is - that's why he can't let her go.
The contrast between the dark, violent and destructive comparisons he makes of her, ignoring those destructive feelings and calling her his "love" really deepens the juxtaposition between aggression and affection the song potrays and shows just how blind the protagonist is.
I feel like this fits Hannibal's feelings about Will quite well, considering how obsessed he is with him, to the point of destruction and isolating him to have him all to himself (and also the fact that my man was CRYING after putting Will in prison, missing their therapy sessions. LIKE BITCH). He really puts Will high up on a pedestal, suggesting just how important and addictive Will is to him and how dependent he has become on Will after opening up to him, maybe even feeling like Will numbs his pain and loneliness of never being accepted for who he actually was.
------------------------------
Verse 3
"[...]Germolene, disinfect the scene, my love, my love, love, love But please don't go, I love you so, my lovely"
This is the aftermath of the protagonist killing his lover. He realises that he killed her, getting an anticeptic(clearly unprepared for this and panicking, using some at-home antiseptic instead of something proper) to disinfect the scene off of his DNA. The realisation quickly hits him of what he has done, making him spiral into a breakdown as he realises that his actions didn't make her stay, they made her dead forever.
Hannibal clearly doesn't disinfect the scene in mizumono, he doesn't even wear his plastic suit or use the cloth that he always uses to not leave finger prints, there was no point in hiding anything anymore, Will helped FBI see through him, although we do see him "cleansing" himself off of the events by walking in the rain and trying to "comfort" Will, telling him to "wade into the quiet of the stream". I don't think these specific lyric apply to the situation much disinfection-wise, although it can represent Hannibal's state of mind, especially after realising everything he has done and the regret that came with it(does he feel guilty tho? i have no idea but the begging and love confessions in this line def represent his obsession and love for Will which left him very heartbroken after everything that was done)
also could represent Will........ him wanting to turn back, if he could only reverse time, undo the events so Abigail lives and everyone else lives..............ouch
------------------------------
Refrain
"Please don't go, please don't go I love you so, I love you so Please don't go, please don't go I love you so, I love you so Please break my heart (Hey!) Please don't go, please don't go I love you so, I love you so Please don't go, please don't go I love you so, I love you so Please break my heart[...]"
the most beautiful part of the song in my opinion tbh. The layers, the build up, the overlapping vocals, it's all just so overwhelming and emotional and vulnerable.
the protagonist spirals, realising what he has done but not wanting it to be true, he's not ready yet to let go of his lover, slowly, he's losing self control and giving into his violent desires, he threatens cannibalism if she goes away(she can't really do anything my dude...) as he frantically confessse to her that he loves her. He just loves her so much and needs her so much, the desire is so strong that he will consume her if it means that she stays right beside him(or inside him), craving that impossible closeness, it's a way to forever remain with a loved one. This whole refrain is just so incredibly contradicting and depressing and desparate its insane
now, it's no secret that Hannibal doesn't want to let Will go and even consume him. He wants him to live but at the same time he wants to taste him, devour him. To love is to consume, but to consume is to devour and transform in reusable energy. He wants him as close as possible and for Will to accept his desires and give himself up, let him be his - but clearly that's not what Will wanted (yet).
...This one is so straightfoward especially considering Hannibal that I don't even know what to say really. The song itself just says it all perfectly.
in conclusion they are fucking insane for this and breezeblocks is the ultimate hannigram (specifically mizumono) song. 11/10
------------------------------
additional notes:
was so excited for this one but i actually wrote less than i thought wow but maybe thats also cuz most of the song repeats. or im tired
idk if its cuz i literally dont know how to explain cannibalism as a metaphor of love or why but. at the same time the song just describes pretty well on its own

hope you enjoyed and thanks for reading<3

I'm loving the conversation about Will's past! I have one question and maybe everyone who was adding into that post can answer too? How do you guys think their lives/the plot would've been like if they ran away together in Mizumono, "after he served the lamb, and no one had to die"?
Ugh that was the dream ;_; @bleumushyroom this is for you too since you were on that post :) Personally I would've loved for them to be the murder husbands, but realistically, Will had to lose it to realize he truly wanted that. If he accepted to run when Hannibal suggested, I feel like he'd always be one foot in, one foot out, or he'd just be convoluted all the time, Hannibal would become stressed out trying to figure him out and how to help him dive fully in, I feel like it would've been beautiful, yes, but very far from ideal. But ): I would've love to see it either way. But if we're also including Abigail then I think things would be even more complex. Will realized she was "helping" her father kill and we never got to explore how he would've dealt with that, since she "died" right after and grieve is of course stronger than any resentment or anger. It would've been interesting to watch this dynamic. Would Hannibal literally make them kill with them? If the "now you'll hunt with me" is any indication. They'd also have to be extra careful towards her since she could've fuck things up if she decided to leave, who knows...She meets someone, falls in love, she runs. She was too young for us to know if she would've remained loyal. I mean her father was killing girls cause she was leaving, and as far as we know, that was not stopping her from leaving, she was still trying. Another thing that intrigues me is, would they immediately fall into a romantic dynamic? I'm still not 100% convinced they never had sexual intimacy in the honeytrap plot, because of some lines, specially Bedelia's, but again, it's not something I'm totally sure of. It's just a "maybe yes maybe no". But let's go with that we see, in that case, no, so I wonder how they would be like, as "fathers" of a young girl, who live and murder together and have long therapeutic walks on the beach, like ?? lol. I think Hannibal was dying to be domestic and have a sense of "family" with them, I think it would've been really interesting to see him try, most likely by taking care of them and their home. And I would've love to see Will having to interpret this dynamic in his head and how he'd deal with his feelings towards Hannibal and specially I would've love to see Abigail just "....okaay??" in the middle of them hahahaha poor girl would third wheel to an extreme level, she'd probably be like "wtf is happening".

Hannibal only eats people that he thinks are lesser than him, pigs in his eyes, and elevates them into art making them into something beautiful despite or rather because of their previous ugliness . So when I first watched the show I was rather curious why he would want to eat Will Graham, since he obviously had way more complex feelings than disgust and resentment for Will. But at some point, he decides that the only way to get over the betrayal and guilt that Will made him feel is to eat him. Will wouldn't be the first person he cared for that Hannibal would kill/consume (Abigail/Misha) so is it a pattern? or is it another one of his more impulsive characteristics, where he is so thoroughly consumed by anger and betrayal, that he cannot stay cold-headed and calculating, as he is most of the time?
I am also rather curious if the act of killing Abigail was impulsive or planned. he was obviously aware of the betrayal that Will had committed, but was he still hoping for Will to run away with Abigail and him or was Abigail sentenced to her death from the beginning? The way Hannibal killed her in the exact same way Garret Jacob Hobbs, her own father, tried to, could be used to symbolize the paternal care that he may have developed while hiding her in his residence, it also could represent a similar desperation that G.J.H felt while trying to kill Abigail. Hobbs wasn't planning on killing Abigail, at least not in such a spontaneous way, where he wouldn't be able to consume her as he did his other victims. it was an act of emotion. Just as in Mizumono Abigail's actual murder was. it was supposed to hurt Will and make him feel the pain Hannibal was feeling because of his betrayal. but it was also meant to symbolize, that the previously gathered teacup is once again shattered, with no way to reverse time.
If we were to go back to the question "Was Hannibal's act of trying to consume Will an act of impulsive emotion or a calculated plan" I would say it is a mix of both. While Hannibal wanted to consume Will's brain since the beginning of season 3, it was still a raw display of emotion. He didn't know what to do with his emotions. He was confused, about why he was not only able to forgive Will, even though he betrayed him on such a deep level, but also feel guilty for what he did in the season 2 finale. He was so consumed by this feeling of guilt and betrayal, just because of one single man. So he thought the only way to finally understand his feelings, would be to consume the brain of the person causing them. Not for the purpose of elevating him into art, but to finally understand the deep emotions he felt around and because of Will.
Hannibal is not one to regret any of his decisions. He plans everything in a way that it is impossible for him to regret something. But in season 3, it is revealed, that he was writing down formula, trying to turn back time. Hannibal is not a person used to feeling regret and since he wasn't forced to cope with that kind of burden until now the only possible solution in his eyes is to turn back time, gather the teacup once again, and rebuild the relationship he had with Will before killing Abigail. So it is obvious that his attempt of trying to eat Will wasn't planned in the cold-blooded way he normally planned his murders, but rather planned in an emotional act of distress. His fierce anger and stabbing feelings of betrayal made him ignore the consequences that would follow his actions. This was probably the same after Mizumono, after his act of killing Abigail and stabbing Will, in an attempt to replicate the anguish and hurt he felt because of Graham.
His feeling of regret and obvious desperation for forgiveness is in my eyes an obvious sign that Hannibal acted upon pure emotion in both Season 2 (Mizumono) and 3 (Dolce), when being forced to act upon his feelings surrounding Will. Will is the only person who makes him feel out of control, while that was appealing in the start, he notices later on, that he will never be able to predict Will which is a concept rather hard to grasp for Hannibal since he didn't feel so out of control since the death and (probably) forced consumption of his sister Mischa, making him relive all those memories connected to his childhood and his own version of "becoming" the monster he is now.

i have too many brain worms to actually make this make sense (i’ll reblog this with a fully fleshed analysis the next time i feel like being a human) but im thinking about the scene where abigail asks if they’re going to reenact the crime scene.
[to alana] “you be my mom” [to will] “you be my dad” [to hannibal] “and you be the man on the phone”.
i know this is abigail telling hannibal she knows who he was at the time of her parents’ deaths, but it also set up the reverse for mizumono.
will being the man on the phone, hannibal being her “father”, and alana being, in this instance, will (or who will was acting as when he arrived at the hobbs’ house).
which leaves abigail to act as mrs. hobbs — her mother — the woman killed before garret tried to kill abigail.
if you really want to get into the funky brain fuckery, that leaves will to shed his role as the man on the phone and take abigail’s role as the survivor- the one injured by the predator but ultimately surviving with the predator’s scar to bear. both abigail (in aperitif) and will (in mizumono) were killed out of love / fear by their respective would-be-killers.
it also serves to further sharpen the lines between hannibal and garret. if there were any doubts in will’s mind before about what he was to hannibal (probably wasn’t, given they were going to run away together), taking garret’s role and attempting to kill will for the sheer reason of keeping him out of prison and unquestioned about hannibal (and now, by extension, his involvement with abigail hobbs) wiped it out of his mind.
ough. brain worms are restless so im so sorry if this doesn’t make sense but there’s something here. ive just gotta find it.

fire and burning in hannibal
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
(long meta below)
fire comes up frequently in Hannibal, and burning even more so. our first association with the latter is of course Will's encephalitis in season 1, but Hannibal here (above) refers to the "source of light" -- not the one illuminated. what could this source be, if not Hannibal himself? what or who else could be shining the light on Will? and so Hannibal burns for Will.
burning can be both a transitive and intransitive verb. that which burns things must also be burning. when Hannibal asks Will in mizumono, "Did you think that you could change me the way I've changed you?" his extreme oversight is revealed. that which burns things must already have been burning (intrans.) before the things to which it sets fire even start to burn (in Will's case I would argue both trans. and intrans. work here). of course Will changed Hannibal in the same way Hannibal changed him -- before Hannibal changed him. "to fuel your radiance" -- Hannibal began to burn for Will specifically, to burn Will.
and once two things are burning, in close proximity their flame is one, and anyone above is burnt and the flame reaches heaven, and anyone below sees one source, one act. "and then there's fire... underwriters lump it all together as Acts of God." we see Hannibal avoiding this fact of nature many times, until he is confronted with it in mizumono.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but he does not. the fire is not put out and georgia madchen is a testament to that. and here Hannibal's fatal flaw is exposed all the way: oversight, perhaps, but i would say cognitive dissonance, the contradiction and opposition Will brings to his life, that makes Hannibal try to create by burning. Hannibal believes in and supports Will Graham's agency more than anyone else, yet claims to Sutcliffe that he will himself take control when necessary and put out the fire. Will escapes the hospital still feverish, encephalitic, burning, dying. he doesn't let the fire go out. and Hannibal wants this. Season 1 closes on a rainy day in the shelter of Hannibal's car (a vehicle whose motion Hannibal controls), so that the rain will not put out the burning they share. It rains again, in mizumono. Will goes out in the rain and the fire is put out and that is his agent decision, and betrayal. the rain, an act of God as much as fire is. when the fire is finally put out it is necessarily between Will and God, between will and God, and Hannibal is both cheated and brutally exposed and excluded as not-God. and so he must respond by both playing God and fighting Him: sacrificing his child, killing his Judas, responding himself to Jesus' plea -- "Forgive them, Father" -- though Will does know what he does: "I forgive you, Will." * and facing Will equally, Will in this moment as much a Christ as Hannibal, "Will you forgive me?" ** and this is why Hannibal touches Will so much as he guts him. he tries so so so hard, he touches him closer than ever before, but you can't light something soaked, and not only does Will not re-light but the contact dampens Hannibal just as it used to strengthen both flames. so let Will be wet with his own blood, at least, not infernal God's rain. Will is his so Will's blood is his, at least let him be wet with something of Hannibal's, but it's God's awful rain that's really done it and Hannibal knows.
and he steps out into the rain, and his own fire sputters and hisses out, and the world is dark.
Tumblr media
so it is fitting that Hannibal receives his reply in the dark as well.
Tumblr media
but only after meeting the rain where it came from, by connecting with and broaching and surpassing the clouds: he takes a plane.*** meeting God where He lives, in the sky, in cathedrals. God invaded Hannibal's will, Hannibal's Will, so Hannibal encroaches on God, a violent spire into His wretched heaven, imposing on His damned churches. and he stays above Will in case God tries anything again. he watches from the loft and he kills from above. Will is master of his own fate but Hannibal will make himself the circumstance, since he must.
Tumblr media
but the two parted in darkness, both extinguished. Hannibal can watch from overhead, and Will sees Hannibal's and God's flame from underneath as one, but the men can only meet in darkness. so Will's forgiveness comes in the depths of the earth, from death, in the catacomb shadows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
but the teacup cannot be unshattered and the blaze has already effected its change. the fire has left them as they will remain. they are lit together now only ever by external sources of light, serving to expose their darkness. and after Hannibal's 3 years in prison, Will rolls away the stone by moonlight and they fall, downwards, together, into blackness.
s2e10 naka-choko || s2e13 mizumono || s3e3 primavera
* Will's name is significant here, as throughout the show. by referencing this part of the crucifixion, the inclusion of his name and the word "will" in one stroke, "for they know not what they do" is explicitly and intentionally written out and Will's agency is tragically asserted. ** Do you will to forgive me? Which means the same thing but stabs a bit harder.
*** Will, later, catches the rain at its other source -- the ocean -- both on their path to God and to the other, since rain cyclically has no beginning.

“i let you know me, see me. i gave you a rare gift, but you didn't want it.” is such a raw quote you’d think it was from the gay cannibal show and it is

Hannibal was Will's Golden Ticket
Was rewatching season 2B for probably the ninth time and I have some thoughts.
GJH in Aperitif and Will in season 2B are in remarkably similar positions.
GJH killed girls that looked like Abigail because he couldn’t bear to lose her when she eventually left home. Abigail was his golden ticket. Will, in season 2B, makes every murder he commits or tries to commit about Hannibal, reliving his revenge, his "reckoning," repeatedly. Will is projecting his feelings about Hannibal onto other men that he kills. Will almost shoots Clark Ingram because he reminds him of Hannibal. While he is killing Randall Tier, he imagines he is killing Hannibal. He fantasizes about killing Hannibal repeatedly. Hannibal is his golden ticket, like Abigail was GJH’s.
Will’s situation in Mizumono also reflects GJH’s situation in Aperitif. GJH was running out of time, and he knew that, even before Hannibal’s call–Will literally says, ”He knows he's gonna get caught. One way or the other.” In Mizumono, Will knows he is running out of time before he has to make a real decision of what he wants to do with Hannibal. He realizes this even before Mizumono–saying, ”This isn’t sustainable. We are going to get caught.” He knows he is running out of time, just like Hobbs, before he has to decide if he wants his fantasies of taking revenge against Hannibal to become reality.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the scene with GJH and Will sniping the stag at the beginning of Mizumono, GJH asks Will, once again: “See?” I think, working in this lens of Will and GJH being in similar positions at this point, in one layer of the many that exist in this show, GJH could mean “See? I was backed into a corner, and I had to kill the object of my affection (my “golden ticket”). You are running out of time just like I was. You have to decide just like I had to.”
Being in GJH’s mind, Will would act like GJH did: he would have to end it all. He would have to either kill Hannibal or ruin their relationship by following through with his betrayal. This could be what him almost shooting the stag symbolizes. A definitive murder of his relationship with Hannibal (through complete and utter betrayal), just like GJH murdered his relationship with Abigail by killing her mother and trying to kill her.
But we never actually see Will shoot the stag. He focuses on it, we hear the gun go off, but the scene changes before we can see it actually get shot. At this point, we still don’t know what Will will do.
Another parallel between Will and GJH clicks into place with Will’s call to Hannibal: “They know.” Just like Hannibal told Hobbs: “They know.” Time is up.
In a way, this phone call is Will’s attempt at preserving his relationship with Hannibal. He wants Hannibal to run, and decides against letting him be arrested. He decides to let the stag live. But Hannibal stays because Hannibal is Hannibal; he had smelled Will’s betrayal (Freddie Lounds’ shampoo), and the stag does not die in 3x02's replay of Mizumono because Will shot it, but because of Hannibal’s reaction to Will’s betrayal–lying to him for nearly the entirety of season 2B. As someone said in this post, the stag’s death was never Will’s doing; the tragedy and undoing of their relationship was the misunderstanding.
There is also a beautiful symmetry to both of these situations ending in a kitchen, of course, not to mention the fact that Abigail is a pivotal point to both of them. GJH tried to kill Abigail at the end of his life, which marked the beginning of Hannibal and Will’s. And Hannibal killed Abigail at the (metaphorical) end of his and Will’s.
Even though Will decided not to imitate GJH, whose situation was so similar to his, their stories still ended in almost the same way.
As Hannibal and Bedelia say in Dolce: "All of our endings can be found in our beginnings. History repeats itself, and there is no escape."

i've yet to see anyone talk about parallels between goncharov (1973) and nbc's hannibal. it's so obvious to me that bryan fuller is making references at every turn. let's start with the most obvious:
goncharov & andrey death scene//will & hannibal in 2.13 mizumono
Tumblr media
in goncharov, our final scene involves andrey shooting goncharov multiple times. clearly, we see direct reference to that in 2.13 with hannibal taking andrey's role and will as goncharov. this can be further extrapolated when thinking of the overall arcs of each of these characters. goncharov goes through a spiral throughout the film, much like we see will graham experience. the arc of hannibal season 2 feels reminiscent of the almost camp-esque vibes from the movie and i'm positive brian fuller has this movie in his top ten list. but it doesn't stop there.
what i'm really interested in is a goncharovian reading of the third season of hannibal. while goncharov dies alone, we receive a brief flashback to him cupping andrey's face. as the film was released in 1973, we don't dive any deeper into the homoeroticism than this and the choice here was framed by critics at the time as a "final acknowledgement of the individual responsible for his corruption arc". obviously there are much more queer readings of this scene, as i'm sure bryan fuller would agree. i would go so far as to argue hannibal season 3 in its entirety is in conversation with the hallucination scene we see at the conclusion of goncharov.
at the end of mizumono, will is gravely injured at the hands of hannibal, paralleling goncharov and andrey. if we follow the line of analysis that this is a parallel, where is will's hallucination? what does he dream of as he drifts off to dearh, alone?
italy, of course.
season 3 hannibal shocked many viewers. it goes, as my friend affectionately puts it, "balls to the walls". suddenly, will and hannibal are chasing each other with the backdrop of italian art and culture. two men in love with each other deeply entangled in crime prancing around italy.... sound familiar?
Tumblr media
from a goncharovian lens, this makes perfect sense: season 3 as goncharov's dying hallucination, which bryan fuller draws out, breaths life into, in the way the writers of goncharov couldn't do in the early 70s. what if this season was never supposed to make sense? was never supposed to seem real? was always supposed to carry that dream-like quality that didn't exist in the first two seasons? because it's bryan fuller's love letter to the important queer media that came before it.
there are many more parallels between hannibal and goncharov. i definitely will add on to this post in the coming weeks as i allow things to sink in more. but all i have to say for now is: wow.
