WAIT- I JUST THOUGHT OF SOMETHING

There were a series of experiments performed 1958 (because Psychological studies used to be FUN back in the day before MORALS and NOT FUCKING YOUR TEST SUBJECTS UP became important to people) by Harry Harlow. The experiments are commonly known as the Wire Mother vs Cloth Mother.

In experiment #1:

They would separate infant Rhesus monkeys at birth from their mothers.

And place them in a cage with two surrogate mothers.

A wire mother who provided nourishment.

And a cloth mother who provided physical contact.

The monkey would spend the majority of the time with the Cloth Mother even if they didn't provide anything meaningful beyond contact. They would be braver with the Cloth Mother present, they would explore more. When confronted with a frightening object they would take refuge with the Cloth Mother.

I love the Murder Family concept as much as the next deranged autistic weirdo on this website but let's be honest. Will was never going to make a good Father. As much as he wanted a connection he couldn't bring himself to form one with the kid served up on a silver platter to him.

Will was the Wire Mother. He would have provided for Abigail, taught her appropriately but never be there for her emotionally like she would have needed.

Hannibal was the Cloth Mother. He didn't really care about Abigail. She was a means to an end. He provided comfort but nothing else, not at least what we would consider as appropriate nourishment.

i think the fact that all of abigail’s parallels point towards her being the embodiment of will’s own dark urges (and how she only became a huge part of his life after he opened up that gateway to his becoming [killing hobbs]) yet she still feels the safest with hannibal is something i really like to think about.

like abigail came into her own easily. she gutted nichols without hesitation. she didn’t even think about it. going along with hannibal’s plan to criminalize will for her death (which could be viewed as a DIRECT parallel to when will refuses to intervene with hannibal’s ploy to get chilton arrested). abigail forcing herself into isolation to keep herself safe with hannibal at the same time will was in jail.

yet somehow both versions of will - and by extension the only version of abigail - are drawn to hannibal. both comfort and horror is found there, by both people — and when abigail dies and leaves both halves of will to deal with hannibal, that same fate is sealed for him.

will and abigail are mirrors in the sense that their similarities are what ends up being their dividing point, i think, and i think that’s shown in how the abigail of will’s mind palace would still go with hannibal. i think that’s why the embodiment of will’s self beyond the curtains he presented to the world was abigail — theyre so similar that the thought of finding the parts of himself that he villainized (in himself) in her wasn’t actually concerning. he knew what she was capable of, and what she’d done, but he’d still loved her (and missed her, as seen in his reaction to seeing her again).

also ??? the parallel of abigail being prepared for her funeral / will fighting for his life (being brought back from the brink of death)???

i think abigail’s death played an integral part in his becoming because it was the death of a dividend — removing a part of the equation that he couldn’t identify without identifying himself.

I feel like I cannot fully explain it, but there is something so different in the way how in Mizumono Hannibal wants to kill Jack and threats Alana in comparison to how he hurts Will and kills Abigail. Besides his oblivious feelings for Will, in the way he “chases” Jack and Alana I can clearly see that terrifying the Chesapeake Ripper, the ruthless predator. But when he hurts Will? That scary murderer is gone, he is so heartbroken, that in my opinion he looks at least a few years older than he in fact is. He is so soft and vulnerable. His attitude changes again after:

Hannibal: Do you believe you could change me, the way I've changed you? Will: I already did.

Hannibal knows that Will is right and he didn't see the change within himself coming, he didn't want anyone allow to change him, but it happened, so he threw a tantrum and killed Abigail in front of Will to make a point.

So many different emotions showed only like in fifteen minutes. Something wonderful and terrifying.
