I feel like I cannot fully explain it, but there is something so different in the way how in Mizumono Hannibal wants to kill Jack and threats Alana in comparison to how he hurts Will and kills Abigail. Besides his oblivious feelings for Will, in the way he “chases” Jack and Alana I can clearly see that terrifying the Chesapeake Ripper, the ruthless predator. But when he hurts Will? That scary murderer is gone, he is so heartbroken, that in my opinion he looks at least a few years older than he in fact is. He is so soft and vulnerable. His attitude changes again after:
Hannibal: Do you believe you could change me, the way I've changed you? Will: I already did.
Hannibal knows that Will is right and he didn't see the change within himself coming, he didn't want anyone allow to change him, but it happened, so he threw a tantrum and killed Abigail in front of Will to make a point.
So many different emotions showed only like in fifteen minutes. Something wonderful and terrifying.

My absolute favorite parallel in the entire show is wills response to “do you think you can change me? The way I’ve changed you?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I see the first one as how it actually happened. Will is in pain but still delivers the line with this cutting smugness and self assuredness. His tone is even slightly playful despite the situation.
The second one is how Hannibal remembers/perceived it. Like a nail in a coffin. Will is looking at him with clear distain, even disgust. His tone is hollow and empty. Even the lighting is colder.
Hannibal remembers this moment as a tragedy while Will sees it as a triumph.

now. i know what you're thinking. i know. "kallie oh my god let this quote die". but no. because i've had yet another thought.
"achilles, lamenting the death of patroclus. whenever he’s mentioned in the iliad, patroclus seems to be defined by his empathy."
"he became achilles on the field of war. he died for him there, wearing his armor."
i think by now we've all already seen the posts or recognized that hannibal and will have swapped clothes for the battle between them and dolarhyde. if not, here's a nifty little visual (2x13 mizumono, 3x10 ...and the woman clothed in the sun)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and if you're like me, you'd think "oh that's really sweet. he's wearing hannibal's shirt. it shows their lines beginning to blur". but you know what else it shows?
"[...] he died for him there, wearing his armor."
will went into war (the fight against dolarhyde) wearing hannibal's armor, and he (presumably) died there. he died in hannibal's armor, as patroclus died in achilles'.
and even THEN.
"he did. hiding and revealing identity is a constant theme throughout the greek epics."
"as are battle-tested friendships."
where will embraces his becoming, and steps into himself - where he casts off the persona of the man he'd been displaying and reveals who he really is underneath, which is a very constant theme throughout hannibal and will's relationship ― the battle to see each other, to understand.
"achilles wished all greeks would die, so that he and patroclus could conquer troy alone. took divine intervention to bring them down."
if you know me then you know, of course, i love love love the religious symbolism that hannibal is drenched in. and i think it's a very lovely parallel to the fact that hannibal, who sees himself as above but so intertwined with religion, and views will as his god, went to his death with the very man he worshipped.
you know. divine intervention.

a boy name equivalent for abigail is "abel". biblical abel, doomed by the narrative to die, killed by family, murdered by someone who was supposed to take care of him. cain killed abel because god rejected his offering.
hannibal, a surrogate father figure, swore to protect abigail. but will, his god, rejected his offer of leaving and escaping together. abigail, doomed by the narrative, is slaughtered in return.
"abel" also means "breath" and abigail's throat was slashed.

Will Graham and the Denial of Love
An analysis of the journey Will goes through to fully accept Hannibal's love for him, specifically inspired by this scene:
youtube
Sometimes this scene is interpreted as Will knowing Hannibal loved him, because it is his subconscious. Yet, this is actually the complete opposite.
When Hannibal tells Will he loves him (regardless if it's only in the script or not, since his speech already proclaimed love with or without the "I love you"), this is Will's reaction:
Tumblr media
He "has heard enough". Doesn't believe the words. He thinks it's another manipulation. Furthermore, after this, Will sees Hannibal as the Wendigo:
Tumblr media
Soulless.
In season 3, Will tells Abigail's ghost/projection that Hannibal is always playing. He doesn't even believe Hannibal could miss him.
Tumblr media
Will doesn't think Hannibal is capable of love or if he is, he's not the one Hannibal would love. He's just playing.
Tumblr media
This is exactly what prompts Will to reject him. Here's a full analysis of the surrender scene from the perspective of Jung's "Love and Power".
Will wasn't done with Hannibal's literal appetite. He was done with the constant chase. The game, the playing.
So he never actually knew or believed, this is exactly why he needed to ask Bedelia. He knew she would know, because she was with him "behind the veil", because she understood Hannibal, she had a peak inside his mind. If anyone would know, it'd be her. That's why he resents her so much. She had access to parts of Hannibal that Will never did.
"You'd only do that (surrender) if I rejected you."
He believes Hannibal's only motivation is playing a game of chase. He rejects Hannibal because he is tired of the chase, and because he knew that was the only way Hannibal would stop.
"You were curious", "you wanted to see what would happen", lines like these hint at Will's perception of Hannibal's motives. He doesn't care, just wants to know what will happen. Just wants to be entertained.
Hannibal loves like god: deeply, unconditionally, yet viciously. He won't kiss you goodnight or sing you a lullaby. He won't hold you through nightmares. But he will send demons to your bedroom so that you can fight them and become fearless. He won't feel sorry for the scars they give you. He wants you to be worthy of his love. An equal. Hannibal has suffered tremendously. And for him to fully love you, you must suffer just as much.
That's why his love is so difficult to be seen, understood and perceived, because he seems to act carelessly and in ways that are cruel. Will sees Alana, all sweet and hugs, and caregiving. Or Molly, supportive, appraising, nurturing. Human love, easy to see, to understand and feel.
Hannibal's love burns cold, is sharp like a knife and leaves him wrecked, destroyed and shattered.
One leaves him satiated, comfortable and safe.
But the other exalts him. And how can you compete with that?

There's so much to be said about the line "They know" in Mizumono. It has so many different meanings. "They" is so many people.
Will is saying "Jack knows you're the Chesapeake Ripper".
Will is saying "Kade Prurnell and the FBI know we're all breaking the law."
Will is saying "Alana knows about you, about us."
But when you say the word "they", you talk about others. It's someone else. It's exclusive of the speaker. And isn't that the kicker? They all knew something. They all had goals.
Jack's goal was to kill and/or apprehend Hannibal.
The FBI's goal was to take in Jack and Will.
Alana's goal was to protect Will and herself.
But Will says "They know" because he isn't included in any of this knowledge. He doesn't have a clear goal. He doesn't know what he wants. Not until it's too late.
Did you notice in Mizumono that when Will gets out of the cab at Hannibal's house, he gets out sort of slow and unsure, but still relatively calm, until he sees Alana laying on the front walk? Then he hurries. Then he seems alert. Then he gets out his gun. It's a quick change. He's panicking because these people who are alive and with him are hurt.
Then boom, another quick change, because Abigail, who was thought dead and separated from him, is not hurt, she's here, and suddenly so is Hannibal, and the regret is replaced with panic. How did this happen? How is Abigail alive? Why didn't they leave? Why aren't they safe and far from here?
And you know why?
It's because Hannibal and Abigail, they know. They know (or at the very least Hannibal did) that Will betrayed them. They know that Will was supposed to be with them. And they know that it can not be that way, not now.
And Will, the double agent, the loyal soldier and the lovesick fool, he was blind. He did not know. He couldn't have.

shut the fuck up why did i never realize that the heart tableau was held up by three swords. like the three of swords tarot card that represents heartbreak, sorrow, and betrayal. WOW
i think its also notable that when the three of swords is reversed (which is how it technically looks in the tableau), it represents optimism, forgiveness, and healing.
"In the reversed case, those three swords now point up, with their tips intertwined like they were poles holding up a tent. The heart has still been pierced, but the swords seem to have stopped the heart’s fall. And best of all, the dark clouds of the upright card are now pillowy and soft ground that is much safer." (x) — in mizumono, the betrayal was revealed and reciprocated, which would be represented by an upright three of swords (not to mention the clouds and rain in the background of the card, like when hannibal left everyone for dead, walking out into the rain). in primavera, hannibal displays the heart tableau — the reversed three of swords — for will. it says "you broke my heart, but i still forgive you (represented by the reversed three of swords), like i said. i can move past this. can you?" we are reminded of what he said in mizumono: "i forgive you, will. will you forgive me?" yes. will finds him in the catacombs and tells him: "i forgive you." and despite the betrayal and heartbreak, they move past the events of mizumono. and betrayal has reversed to become forgiveness, once again.

Mizumono is the first time Will sees Hannibal broken like how he was. He probably didn’t expect him to be. At that point he struggled to realize that Hannibal was able to be hurt. Especially to that capacity. Will isn’t used to someone caring about him. So that coupled with the fact that he probably thought Hannibal wanting to run away with him was just another facet of his manipulation led to him being as shocked as he was. But it wasn’t manipulation. Hannibal was willing to leave then and there if it meant Will would go with him. When Hannibal stabs Will, in a sense he takes it. He doesn’t pull away. He leans into it and clutches onto Hannibal. At that moment right before Hannibal shoves the blade in, you can see the expression on his face where he realizes that Hannibal actually cares. He warned Hannibal. He gave him time to get away. He probably thought Hannibal would be gone. But he wasn’t. He wanted to wait for Will. He couldn’t just not see him again. Before leaving for Europe he gave Will a reminder of him that would be apart of his body forever as well as serve as a physical representation of the emotional agony he experienced in the kitchen.
During the scene, Hannibal talks about how he gave Will a rare gift and that he didn’t want it, which Will responds with “Didn’t I?” That’s the problem with their communication or lack thereof. They speak in metaphors and abstract ways that make it hard to understand what’s going on for the audience and between each other at times. There’s so many layers. Things get lost in translation. Will didn’t understand the extent of Hannibal’s care. He thinks every interaction he has with Will is just apart of their back and forth game. But it’s not.
Their communication is much less convoluted than usual. Which isn’t to say there’s a total absence of metaphor. But there is a much greater emphasis on the raw emotions of what both of them (especially Hannibal) are feeling. Shots linger. The camera doesn’t shy away. It makes us watch the entirety of the heartbreaking scene from when Will turns around and Hannibal is there to when Hannibal leaves and the rain washes over him.
After that, Will regrets not running away. He decides to set off to Europe. He remembers what Hannibal said. That he didn’t want his rare gift. That Hannibal let him see him and know him just for Will to take his freedom away from him. So Will takes the time to learn about Hannibal. Prove that he did actually want the rare gift. Prove that the reason he didn’t run away with Hannibal wasn’t because he genuinely wanted Hannibal locked up with his freedom taken away.
It was because he was scared and in denial. In denial of his own feelings towards Hannibal. In denial of Hannibal’s feelings towards him. Caught up in the ongoing battle of choosing restraint over indulgence. Of going along with what is socially acceptable and ‘right’ according to broader society rather than listening to his true desires which he isn’t even fully aware of with how repressed and suppressed they are. Hannibal scares him not because he’s afraid of what Hannibal would do to him. No. He’s scared for what he’ll become if he embraces his desire like Hannibal wants for him. At that point in Mizumono, Will isn’t ready to embrace anything. He defaults back to what he knows.
Finally when they reunite, what is one of the first things Will says to Hannibal?
“I wanted to understand you before I laid eyes on you again. I needed it to be clear what I was seeing.”
He didn’t understand Hannibal before. Hell, he didn’t understand himself. Despite seeing Hannibal in a way that even Hannibal acknowledged, he didn’t truly understand him. He didn’t understand Hannibal’s history or the feelings that Hannibal had for him. Through traversing Europe, Will was able to clear his head and understand Hannibal at last as well as learn to embrace the darker side of him that he has suppressed. He knows he can’t erase the past, but he wants to make up for his lack of understanding in the best way he knows how. He wants to prove that does understand through taking the time to and deconstructing the barriers that got in the way of that and his misconceptions about Hannibal.
We don’t see Will at peace often. He’s always tense. Constantly looking like he’s waiting for the other shoe to drop. However during that scene as they gaze at each other, Will has an ease about him. He can finally let his walls down and share a smile with the man he loves. There’s no pretenses between them. It’s yet another genuine moment they share. And although we know what comes next, Will was able to indulge. At least for a little while.

during that final dinner, hannibal offers will the out, tells him if you just come with me i will forgive everything, but it doesn't matter because will has already decided way before this moment that there HAS to be a sacrifice. someone's got to pay for everything that's happened even if its him. freddie asks him, "you really don't know if you're going to survive him do you?" no answer. and alana asks him, "you've set some sort of trap and you're goading hannibal into it. how can you be sure he isn't goading you?" and will says, "i can't" with that resigned smile like he'd already decided right then and there that he was going to die with hannibal, and all the rest of the show is him fighting against that or trying to find a way into the ground with him

I hate Will for what he did in season 2, he should have chosen Hannibal sooner... Do you think Mizomono could be avoided?
I think Mizumono could have had another outcome, yes, though I also think that it was necessary for both Will and Hannibal. They still needed to grow: Will needed to understand what Hannibal was ready to give him (a family, a gathered tea cup and a happy ending), the depth of his feelings, and the extent of his own attachment. He had to see how terribly he’s broken Hannibal’s heart and how Hannibal continued to love him despite everything in order to realize the power and the perpetuity of his feelings. Hannibal had to make sure that Will is The One to the point where the life he used to live lost all its appeal, just like his freedom. Without Will, they turned out to be meaningless. He had to understand he’s not infallible, that he also makes mistakes, and that Will changed him much more than he had believed initially.
I understand the frustration with Will, but I can't blame him for not choosing Hannibal sooner. When watching the second half of S2, I’m on Hannibal’s side, but I can relate to Will as well. He thinks Hannibal killed Abigail just like that, despite claiming he cared for her; he’s still hurt and bitter from being betrayed and set up; he’s not sure if Hannibal is really capable of love, and he’s simply not ready in terms of his Becoming. He’s close, yes, but not quite there yet. I think he needed to try living a normal life one more time to fully understand how futile and unfulfilling it is.
Would have they still made it? Possibly. But maybe not. Ultimately, Mizumono solidified their bond and demonstrated how literally nothing can tear them apart. It’s a heartbreaking episode, but it’s a stage Will and Hannibal had to overcome. It was a test of their feelings in a way, and they both passed it and became stronger, finally being ready not to just choose each other, but also to stay together.

S1 Ep1 if Hannibal, Aperitif, does a spectacular job highlighting the ways in which Hannibal and Will are dark reflections of one another concerning their empathy — or lack thereof — towards humans versus animals.
When we are initially introduced to Will, he seems distant if not blatantly standoffish, verging on rude in his conversation with jack.
He is not endeared to us right away, initially put off by his rejection of conventional societal norms
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is then immediately challenged by the scene of Will rescuing Winston. He shows an innate gentleness and extensive patience in building trust with the dog and easily accepting him into his life.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Will, dogs are the antithesis of people. They are simple and straightforward, easily accepting any act of love and affection and eager to return the favor with loyalty and trust without ulterior motives.
Enter Hannibal.
We are introduced to Hannibal immediately after Will asserts that this serial killer is eating his victims. Will goes on to say that this killer sees these girls as merely pigs, nothing more than ingredients for his dinner parties.
We know from jump that Hannibal is a killer and a cannibal, but it is jarring when we’re told he’s violent and without empathy, only to be shown his methodical care and love when it comes to preparing his meals.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A soft and romantic piece of music plays in the background, mirroring the soundtrack during the scene with Will and Winston. We are being introduced to these characters both from within and without, a unique perspective one does not expect from media surrounding a notorious killer and cannibal.
They are both outcasts or society in their own ways with Hannibal slightly better at adapting with his “person suit” than Will. They both have deep wells of empathy, but they are different than most. They do not connect to other people and instead find other ways of expressing empathy.
Empathy does not equal kindness or compassion, it is merely an understanding of the motives and feelings of others. It does not imply that one feels or interprets these feelings in the same way, only that they are able to receive and reflect them.
Tumblr media
They can only understand each other, each acting as the foil for the other. Hannibal nurtures the dark side of Will’s empathy while Will unknowingly coaxes out a possessive and devoted side of Hannibal he has not experienced since Mischa. Their relationships with other are shallow, although for Will it is a constant search for connection while for Hannibal it is a deliberate manipulation tactic.
Hence why when in Mizumono when Alana asks Hannibal if she ever could have understood him, Hannibal almost sadly replies “no.”
We see them immediately connect with each other over a meal — Hannibal’s expression of love and connection alongside Will’s understanding of a beast enamored by its feeder. Will wants to be trapped, understood, fed. Hannibal wants to feed.

i have too many brain worms to actually make this make sense (i’ll reblog this with a fully fleshed analysis the next time i feel like being a human) but im thinking about the scene where abigail asks if they’re going to reenact the crime scene.
[to alana] “you be my mom” [to will] “you be my dad” [to hannibal] “and you be the man on the phone”.
i know this is abigail telling hannibal she knows who he was at the time of her parents’ deaths, but it also set up the reverse for mizumono.
will being the man on the phone, hannibal being her “father”, and alana being, in this instance, will (or who will was acting as when he arrived at the hobbs’ house).
which leaves abigail to act as mrs. hobbs — her mother — the woman killed before garret tried to kill abigail.
if you really want to get into the funky brain fuckery, that leaves will to shed his role as the man on the phone and take abigail’s role as the survivor- the one injured by the predator but ultimately surviving with the predator’s scar to bear. both abigail (in aperitif) and will (in mizumono) were killed out of love / fear by their respective would-be-killers.
it also serves to further sharpen the lines between hannibal and garret. if there were any doubts in will’s mind before about what he was to hannibal (probably wasn’t, given they were going to run away together), taking garret’s role and attempting to kill will for the sheer reason of keeping him out of prison and unquestioned about hannibal (and now, by extension, his involvement with abigail hobbs) wiped it out of his mind.
ough. brain worms are restless so im so sorry if this doesn’t make sense but there’s something here. ive just gotta find it.

the way hannibal deliberately smells the towel he uses after his shower post-mizumono slaughter is like he is trying to see if any remnants of will remain. to see if any of him couldn't be washed away, how much was left behind. to see how much of an imprint will had, the influence will claimed to possess while bleeding out on his kitchen floor. a power to not only get inside but to truly change hannibal. like a bittersweet "is he truly still here with me or did I manage scrub it all away" because as hurt as he was he wouldn't, couldn't, be without him. he gutted him in a way to spare his life so maybe part of him hoped part of will was still left behind, holding him, burying within his skin to never leave him ever again, stitched into the last, most vulnerable layer, the hidden self beneath his perfectly curated personsuit. a small prayer than when will reached back, he intended to stay
