sorry just one more question, but what even made them do that?? i'm not saying anything justifies doxxing at all; afaik May was very sweet. is it just because she wrote fic?? was the person just insane and does that mean anyone who is a writer in this fandom is at risk bc we still don't know who did it???? feel free to ignore i know these past few days have been a lot but i'm just worried
I’m going to answer this and then I likely won’t talk more about it publicly. I’m not directly involved. I don’t have all the facts. Everything I say is speculation and conjecture.
I don’t know why the person was doxxed or who did the doxxing. We don’t know the details of what happened and what led to it. That being said, there is no justification for doxxing, no matter the circumstances. I know there’s talk of a potential HIPAA violation, but as there is no definitive proof, I’m not comfortable speaking on it any further.
I understand that you’re worried. I’m worried too. With that said, as long as you conduct yourself in a way that protects your personal information, you should be okay. Don’t share your full name or address, don’t share the name of your workplace or the name of your employer. Don’t give out your phone number or email or anything along those lines. With the rise of social media, we’ve become more lenient with what we share online, and I think that’s played a certain part in this situation. That’s not to say that the victim holds any of the blame. They don’t. What I am saying is that information we share, even with people we deeply trust, can be used against us. It’s terrifying to think that anyone would, but it’s an uncomfortable truth we have to live with.
On a decidedly lighter note, I'm not going anywhere. Considering I received death threats at one point, it’s going to take a hell of a lot more to scare me off. I’ll continue writing and sharing my fics.
