I’d learned this much playing chess: The more complicated a person’s strategy seemed, the less likely an opponent was to look for simple answers.

Hi! Welcome to fic recs for the month! I wanted to put together all the fics I've read and loved over both Feb and March for this month's 28th appreciation (as I didn't post for Feb bc I only read like 2 fics), so here they are! Click on the links for full tags and summaries. If you read any of these make sure to show the authors some love by leaving kudos and comments!
💫Fringe & flogging by @larry-hiatus
(4k | E | nipple play pwp)
Harry was good this time. He didn’t wear his lace knickers; he didn’t tear his trousers on stage. But his revealing outfit and less than family friendly performance still had the night ending in ripped clothing, this time at the hands of his jealous dom.
Thoughts: all Emily smut is really good, really hot smut. It's a guaranteed good time, especially if you like your Louis to be a little mean. Why aren't you reading yet?
💫Just a trim by @cherrystreet
(1.7k | E | crack and smut)
Or, the one where Harry gets a haircut, and Louis, along with the rest of the world, loses his mind.
Thoughts: so fucking funny, their dynamic is so fun in this and it's also rather sweet bless pls go read it for good vibes
💫Cause I just wanna feel alive by @goldenkinglouis
(3k | T | magical creatures and fluff)
“Oh, cheers, mate, but I don’t do dates.” Harry’s brow furrowed. “Are you–” he waved vaguely. Louis shook his head. “No, it’s just… been too long for me.” “And how might I convince you otherwise?” Harry asked, his eyes glistening under the lights. OR: Louis is a lost, lonely vampire. Harry is the witch who brings him home.
Thoughts: such a little beaut, beautifully descriptive, the world building feels a little ethereal and the softest characters. Thank you Lou!
💫Unplant by @hellolovers13
(4k | M | fluff)
Please do not disturb my plant. She needs 2 hours of sunlight a day and I live in a sunless flat. I’ll be back to collect her soon Thank you and stay well. or Louis should've looked where he was going, then he wouldn't have to desperately try to save a little flower now.
Thoughts: comfort fic, absolute gem, so very cute and I would die for Harry and her plants
💫To be a better man by @thedevilinmybrain
(9k | E | pwp)
“I can tell how much of a good boy you think he is.” Leon’s snarl doesn’t change, the corner of his mouth lifting higher. “But he’s still calling me, not you, hm?” “Watch your mouth.” Louis is about done with this conversation. Who the fuck talks about their own boyfriend like this? “Or are you accusing me of something?” “Just giving you an out, lad. Like Harry would even look at you. He’s too busy crawling up my ass to notice anyone else.” Leon snarls, rolling his eyes in a dismissive shake of his head. “But if you’re so concerned, go see what he wants. Make him happy enough to leave me alone, eh? Since you’re so worried.”
Thoughts: actually speechless with this one, it was so hot and sensual and I didn't breathe the entire time, you're missing out if you don't read it
💫The light streams out by @nooradeservedbetter
(6k | G | magic & animal transformation)
But in the open air and colours and wind and immensity of the moorlands, that’s where Harry’s entire being feels really free, that’s where he lets himself be one with the magic that soars in him and upon him and in the moorlands all the same, making him one with the land, the earth, the soil, the air around him. He looks at the wilderness, untamed like his magic, and the wilderness looks back, a mirror that makes him safe. He lets the wind course through his hair, feels the moss under his naked feet, long shirt fluttering behind him the only non-natural noise he can hear. He opens his arms, and flies. (Or, Harry's magic is unstable, and Louis finds himself being followed by a fennec fox)
Thoughts: such a gem, so very sweet and soft, wonderfully descriptive and just so lovely
💫did I upset you, daddy? (take out your frustration on me) by @larrydoinglaundry
(3k | E | pwp)
Harry misbehaves, so Louis gets off without him. Harry of course has to watch.
Thoughts: so fucking hot, 10/10 concept always, so good!!!
💫Pull you closer (kiss me harder) by @sunshineandthemoonlight
(5k | E | canon compliant)
Harry likes to wear panties sometimes. It’s never been a sexual thing, until suddenly it is.
Thoughts: angst? Impeccable. Smut? So good and full of emotion. It just made me feel so much and is so well written, in awe.
💫Doc in my box by @homosociallyyours
(2k | E | medical kink)
Faced with lots of extra stress at work, Louis hasn't really felt like she could let go sexually in a while. She's pretty sure that a visit to a certain gynecologist will help change that, though.
Thoughts: so fucking hot!! A delight and I love how quickly Louis almost wanted to break her character. Just so good.
I didn't get to read much this month so this is all I have, but they're all really good! If you check these out, give these works some love. As always, fic writers I will give you the world <3

I kicked off my birthday month by rereading Pacts and Predicaments after recommending it on a particular subreddit and it had been a minute since I'd revisited one of my favorite kinky couples. Several books I'd been waiting for came out in March, so it was a great reading month. Favorites this month were Black AF History, The Fractured Dark, James, The Other Side of Disappearing, and There's Always This Year. I own Pacts and Predicaments and Black AF History, which I listened to on Libby. I also listened to There's Always This Year on Libby because I love when Hanif narrates his own books. Everything else was from either Hoopla or Libby.
Pacts and Predicaments - Jo Henny Wolf
The One in My Heart - Sherry Thomas
The Night Eaters, Book 2: Her Little Reapers - Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda* **
Beneath the Trees Where Nobody Sees #1, #2, #3 - Patrick Horvath
Meegan (Loose Ends #3) - Rebekah Weatherspoon**
The Sitcom Star (Chu's Restaurant #1) - Jackie Lau* **

🍀 March Reading Wrap Up 🍀
Books read: 0
So I've been hesitating posting a wrapup this month cause I committed the biggest crime in book blogging: not finishing anything. However I'm tired of the pressure book media puts on readers where you have to finish a lot of books and read all the time to be considered a 'reader' cause thats bullshit. I'm a university student with chronic illness, dealing with the death of a family member all while working so this month I didn't have the time/spoons to read as much as I did in January/ February and THATS OKAY! If you like books: CONGRATS you're a reader, thats the only prerequisite.
Anyway heres my little reading breakdown:
Books DNF'd - 2 Books in progress - 5
DNF list:
Purity
Bruised
Books in progress list:
It's Okay That You're Not Okay
Boyfriend Material
Red, White & Royal Blue
Camp Damascus
Maeve Fly

March reads. I'm surprised I even got through three this month. I also had my first DNF of the year, which I probably won't record any thoughts on, since I don't have anything intelligent to say about it.
The Closet, Danielle Bobker (Princeton University Press, 2020). I bought a bunch of books from the Princeton University press annual sale; this one turned out pretty good. It does suffer a bit from the problem of stitching together several loosely related research articles, but it was interesting as a history of 16th-17th century closets and their social role. I liked the sections on court favorites/court politics the most. The last chapter tries to link these early closets with the modern concept of coming out of the closet, which was a little half-baked even if it was heading in an interesting direction.
2. The Spy Who Came in from the Cold, John Le Carré (1963/2005). The problem with reading old famous books is that if they're good I start going around like omg have your heard of this?? It's good?? Anyways, newsflash, John Le Carré is a good writer. It's also interesting to see elements that I first encountered in later writers. I would be very surprised if William Gibson isn't indebted to Le Carré in some way. I'll probably hunt down more of his books once I figure out what to read next.
3. Hel's Eight, Stark Holborn (Titan Books, 2023)
I bought this when it came out, and honestly I was kind of relieved to realize I was only a year late in reading it. It's the sequel to Ten Low, which I loved. I probably should have re-read it because I only vaguely remembered how it ended, but Hel's Eight was still great. The two books are a mix of Space Western/Mad Max in space with supernatural horror, or something like that. If you liked Mad Max: Fury Road, you should read these.
Short Fiction
I finally finished New Edge Sword & Sorcery vol. 1, which had some great pieces in it, including "The Pillars of Silence" by Prashanath Srivasta. I mostly read short stories during work breaks, so it can take me a while to get through anything, but I really enjoyed this volume and Vol. 0. It's nice to see a magazine with so much art too.
I also finished issue 143 of Apex Magazine. One of the reasons I don't read a ton of short fic is that my preferred sub genres are pretty underrepresented in contemporary SFF. Apex publishes some good stuff, but I've had a hard time with the last few issues, mostly because of the focus on contemporary-set stories. I did like "Chi Tam is Tired of Being Dead" by Natasha King and the reprints by Eden Royce and Christopher Caldwell.
Finally, I really liked "The Angel Azrael and the Dead Man's Hand" (Peter Darbyshire) in Beneath Ceaseless Skies #339. A Fantasy Western that gestures towards some complex setting/backstory.

Read in March 2024:
Winter of the Witch (Winternight Trilogy #3) by Katherine Arden -> audiobook 🐦‍🔥 ☆☆☆☆☆
Assistant to the Villain by Hannah Nicole Maehrer 📋 ☆☆☆☆
Classic Stories by Edgar Allan Poe 🔪 ☆☆☆☆☆
A Peculiar Combination (Electra McDonnell #1) by Ashley Weaver -> audiobook re-read 🗝️ ☆☆☆☆☆
The Burglary: The Discovery of J. Edgar Hoover's Secret FBI by Betty Medsger 📂 ☆☆☆☆
March was a month of getting back on track for me. In February I actually didn't finish any new books due to a lot of major life stuff happening. I finally finished the book of Edgar Allan Poe's collected stories that I started literally a year ago! And even though it dragged a bit towards the end, I was fascinated by The Burglary, the story of the 1971 FBI office burglary in Media, PA, that revealed the existence of COINTELPRO and loads of other illegal FBI surveillance and harassment. It's one of those books that's a must-read simply to be more aware of not-so-distant American history lest it be repeated. And I started rereading the Electra McDonnell series in preparation for the fourth book (Locked in Pursuit) coming out later this spring. I love a good mystery wrapped in palpable sexual tension between the leads! It's been wonderful so far this year to have more time for rereads of favorites now that I'm not tied up in book challenges, and I hope that continues throughout the year.

It was one of my very first webtoons and what a ride it's been!

Pet by Akwaeke Emezi
Tumblr media
This was my last full read of March and I loved it so much. Emezi does a great job in telling a good, compelling story in a short amount of pages. Pet is very much a book about facing monsters that look just like you and be active in telling the truth, even when the truth hurts. This was such a great read and I highly recommend it for middle to high school age kids as well as adults. Jam is a phenomenal character and I’m looking forward to learning more about Bitter in the next book.
