i’m sure this has already been discussed but i like the detail that dazai’s ability is constantly active and think it's pretty smart when thinking about his overall character. as abilities are shown to be reflections of a person one way or another, no longer human itself sort of shows us that dazai is not simply this suave and overconfident person like many believe him to be, but also feels fear and insecurity.
it’s literally demonstrated how this works as both a strength and weakness, with being able to deescalate violence but also blocks out any sort of healing.
in the case of dazai himself, we see how his cautiousness leads to much of his success against enemies, but we also see how it tends to push people away from him (in the cases of not letting oda or ango know too much about him). the same thing applies with his ability; it protects him from danger, but it also hinders anyone from using their ability to help him. i also think it’s especially interesting that the series showcases this primarily through the fact that yosano cannot heal dazai with her ability.

the most tragic thing about lewis to ferrari is the death of britcedes and charlos. neither are very compelling as concepts but you have to admit the names are a good time

The thing I keep thinking about in the fall out of the Plagiarism and You(tube) vid is these Internet Historian stans not understanding the concept of a video essay. Like they bitch about Hbomberguy "inserting" himself in an already resolved issue (as dubious as that claim is) and, like, your boy aint that important. He is a supporting paragraph to a final thesis my dudes. The case supports Hbomb's point about arrogance and not valuing creative work because that video was not exactly the result of laziness, it took effort to make. If IH had bothered to ask permission, give credit, and maybe offer some profit, he might have gotten it and not had to mutilate the video and hide it under the rug later. But, like, he didn't think he needed to because he didn't see the original article as being worth all that. Like it was a meme shat out in a minute with the understanding it would be propagated and mutated endlessly without anyone giving a shit where it came from.
I mean meme culture is a whole other thing altogether, but still. It was included to explore the motivations and consequences of plagiarism, dumbasses. And also maybe explain why IH has, like, 3 good videos amongst a giant pile of cold diarrhea. It kind of makes me wonder if that cruise ship video was stolen also.

so uhh lukewarm take here but i actually love it when a villain acknowledges their motives.....and then just stays evil.
single favourite asoue netflix episode was when count olaf just went "yeah y'know what maybe i do have trauma maybe i am an orphan maybe my best friend killed my father and maybe i've never felt like i'm enough for anyone."......and then proceeded to burn down a hotel.
hordak finally explaining his tragic backstory and then just staying evil for almost the whole next season.
wilford warfstache who's literally just "haha yeah i have a lot of issues [keeps stabbing you]"
ezra squall casually talking about all his dead friends with morrigan.
i just love it as a trope. and it's always about characters that are so beyond redemption that their motives can essencially be treated not as a redeeming quality, but rather as a joke or a plot device. i love it.

My Loki S2 hot take is that the time loom is CLEARLY not a loom. It does not weave together any form of fabric or garment. It very clearly is shown to spin and ply multiple fibers and threads of time into one thick cord. It is not a time loom. It’s a time spindle

I walk onto the stage.
I grab the mic awkwardly, tap on it with my index finger a couple of times, which is enough for a deafening feedback whistle to spread through to premises, making everyone cringe a little. Mothers cover their kids' ears.
I take a deep breath and clear my throat
"I actually prefer Crowley with short hair tbh" - i mumble into the mic in a semi-hysterical voice, trying hard to hold the tears
The crowd is enraged, and it's roar is rising as I turn into a swarm of beautiful light green butterflies and fly away through the vent.

still weirded out about jason's smoking phase in the comics. like I understand WHY it happened (comics went through a phase where signaling anyone was an antihero involved overt visual cues like a cigarette hanging out of their mouth no yeah believe me I get it) but also like. he took care of his (step)mother when she was sick from drug use? his best friend struggled with drug and alcohol abuse for years? why would he have picked up a cigarette in the first place, having watched people he loved go through that? these are rhetorical questions by the way and I know he doesn't really do it in canon anymore it's just. it's very strange to me.

(Low Effort Take): Rosario is Phoebus
I didn't even design Rosario with Phoebus in mind tbh. Rosario's silhouette somewhat similar to Phoebus, and they both play (or are) guards in the story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And if we're going off of the Malleus = Esmeralda and Rollo being, well, Frollo, his role makes more sense!
This makes me want to draw something...

Not-So-Hot Take:
If a character's non-chosen trait (race, gender, heritage, disability, etc.) plays any part to their (including but not limited to) story, background, mythology, and/or societal influence, you shouldn't change their whatever without changing their story, backstory etc.
Example: Merida from Brave and Snow White
If the character is a historical figure or real person, absolutely no changes should be made without some sort of explicit statement about what changes were made at the start of the film, book, or whatever.
Example: Joan of Ark and Cleopatra
If the character's non-chosen traits are coincidental and play absolutely no role to their story, mythology, etc., it should be perfectly fine to change those aspects.
Example: Cinderella
I don't consume a lot of visual media, but I did read The Outsiders and was throughoughly pissed when Dally wasn't an ugly mug with pointy, lynx-like ears and a dangerous charm like described, but just some handsome, young man. I had to take a step back and understand that, for the sake of sales, the casting director wouldn't want to hire an "ugly" guy. Besides, Dally's looks weren't much of a point in the book, so it was inconsequential anyways.
I am willing to discuss this view, however, because I would love to expand my thoughts on this subject.

potentially hot take:
lukewarm take
well
warm (hot?) take:
i like lwaxana troi. like ya, she's a bit frustrating and embarrassing and overbearing at times, but she's just. her. and she's ok w that. she loves being her! and i love her being her. she's so bright. she appears so bright. but in reality, she's a woman. shes a woman who's scared, and alone, and aging, and sad. she's a woman who loves her daughter. sure, she only appears an episode/season, but every time we see her she loves deanna. and she doesn't always understand, or know. but she loves deanna, and therefor cares for her crew.

Hahah remember not to victimize Bloberta when she is just as bad as clay. She pressured him into drinking and alcoholism and physically hurt him to manipulate him into thinking he needed her. THAT BEING SAID DONT USE THIS TO EXCUSE CLAY. We all know he’s not a baby girl he’s not a poor kitty meow meow he’s an abusive father who shot his son.

Saw some rather tepid takes on r/stardewvalley about how it's cringe to write Stardew fanfic because the game and its characters just aren't that deep. My own tepid take is that I don't think it's that weird to write fanfic about things that don't have a deep narrative, e.g. Stardew Valley. When the canon material is limited, it can be fun to extrapolate and expand and imagine. It can be fun to invent backstories for characters, it can be fun to explore alternate viewpoints, it can be fun to just make shit up whole cloth. It's not that weird to imagine stuff about other people's work and then write/draw/daydream about it. Kids do it, and I see no reason why should we have to stop as adults. It costs nothing, and the fact that it apparently boils some redditors' piss is even more reason to do it.
