Digimon & Magical Witches

Bandai V-Pet Crossovers Part 2 (see Part 1 here)

With Tamagotchi's original launch in 1996, then Digital Monsters in 1997, Bandai and Wiz released Magical Witches in 1998!

While Tamagotchi were based on eggs, and Digital Monsters on cages, the Magical Witches v-pet is shaped like a book, cover and all!

Just like the original lines of Tamagotchi and Digimon, Kenji Watanabe was also the designer for the Magical Witches. Besides going through different stages, the Witches were also divided into four different clans each representing a different magical element. Which tribe of Witches you would raise depends on the version of the v-pet you have.

The clans and their respective magic are as follows:

Eneruge, who specialize in fire magic, Earthlin, who specialize in Earth magic, Baluluna, who specialize in wind magic, and Aquary, who specialize in water magic.

As your Witch grows, it can study other elements of magic! They cannot learn their opposite element until Gen 4 (and master it by Gen 5). So a Eneruge Witch has to learn Earthlin and/or Baluluna magic before they can learn Aquary magic.

Unfortunately this franchise never took off, and no further lines were created past the original line up. The toys are now quite the rare find and any online listings are super expensive.

But part of the franchise lives on within the Digimon franchise!

The Land of Witchelny is now portrayed as another dimension, so to speak, another layer to the Digital World we know. According to offcial DigimonWeb profiles, the land is ruled by elders of each clan and three sages that lead a council governing the clans.

Witchelny is split into four blocks for each cardinal direction, each occupied by a clan, and in the center lies Mount Brocken. On the top of Mount Brocken, the clans have established a joint magic school. Those who master magic (advanced programming language) at said magic school, move on to travel to the Digital World we know.

Here is a list of Digimon, who have been confirmed to have come from Witchelny: Wizardmon /X (master of fire and earth magic), FlareWizardmon (master of fire magic), Sorcerymon (master of light and ice magic), Witchmon (master of wind and water magic), Mistymon (master of various magics, of which fire is its forte), MedievalGallantmon (a legendary hero, who protected Witchelny in ancient times) and Wisemon (born in a magic-less region of Witchelny).

Furthermore, Hexeblaumon is a Digimon that came to Witchelny from the Digital World, and mastered ice magic there.

On the Option Card, Absolute Blast, which features HexeBlaumon, you can also see the symbol of Aquary!

Comparing the original Magical Witches evolutionary charts to the what magic we know these Digimon to be proficient in, we can make some possible connections.

Wizardmon being a master of fire and earth magic, and Witchmon being a master of water and wind magic, these original Witches line up with their abilities.

However with official artwork, such as the one below, portaying fire and water magic as their respective specialties, I believe the top sprites would be more likely.

With Mistymon being proficient in all magic, only the "Soul" type of Witch applies, which is the same in all clans.

I find this stuff super interesting! But wait... doesn't that one face look familiar...?

I wish the One Piece card game wouldn't use so many anime renders/screenshots for their cards... I mean, look at this difference

Both of these are Leader Cards, so the same rarity.

Also when they use shots from the actual anime the landscape format of the screen doesn't work with the portrait format of the cards.

Left a "rare" from the first Booster Set, right a reprint of the same card included in a later Starter Deck.

This looks even worse when the character has no effect.

So, this is not a "normal art vs. alt art" argument. I get that the rarer cards are usually intended to look cooler/better.

And this predominantly affects the main characters. Maybe it's because they have more anime renders readily available, or because the animation teams are more practiced on them, so they're easy and quick to make. But it just feels like they cheap out on the MAIN cast, with artwork so unimportant it doesn't even have artist credit.

I mean, this is the Straw Hats Starter Deck, which the whole game launched with!

And even looking at the game as a whole, for example, these are all cards we got of Robin:

Not counting the Ms All Sunday cards, as they don't work nicely with neither in Straw Hat Crew themed decks, nor to display in a collection of the crew.

iv ben building trans charlie n my head fr, like i said, nearly 10 years. i used to view him as cis bcuz i always try to take as much frm th source material as i can wen i craft my HCs nd i had v personal (stupid) hangups insofar as him explicitly referring to his junk multiple times nd bottom surgery simply not being on my radar as a naive littl trans idiot deep in th sauce tht transmen oftn fall into w phallo being viewed so so poorly

evn still i leaned towards transmasc charlie nd always lovd moments tht let me imagine, for a moment, it being true, like his discomfort w taking off his shirt [hundred dollar baby, charlie kelly: king of the rats, the gang exploits the mortgage crisis, young charlie and mac deleted scenes, etc etc etc], or bonnie yelling abt ppl stealing her "charlie-girl" [the waitress is getting married] which i lovd to see as her accidentally misgendering him while drunk off her ass.

having grown out of my phallo issues (nd if ur reading this and u still view phallo super poorly, please do some research and grow too), ive in recent years fully subscribed to transmasc/nb charlie, and view his timeline something like this:

baby -> elementary: charlie refers to himself as a boy, doesnt "come out," simply has no idea he's afab. bonnie lets him dress however he wants and refers to him as asked. when charlie gets confused about his genitals, bonnie says his dick will grow in later lol, makes charlie wear a dress in public restrooms and tells him its just a game

middle: puberty hits and charlie gets confused and scared. bonnie puts him on blockers w.o explaining them ("my mom used to vaccinate me like every month" [the gang gets quarantined]) charlie goes on content and oblivious. STP acquired because hes "a late bloomer" and his dicks still not growing in?? weird. confides this in mac once, but he doesn't understand.

high: charlie finally registers that he's trans after forgetting theres a health class 1 day and not being able to skip it. throws him for a loop a bit but he becomes actively invested in his goals. he gets to start T and wants to have surgeries. "what guy hasnt done some extensive research on his own genitalia?" [mac is a serial killer]

college (aged): able to surgically transition (ty medicare) and continues on with life as we kno him now

joyce, imo, fits neatly into these views.

as a transmasc nb who came out young nd prefers to be seen as just A Guy by strangers, i grew up v vehemently against anything girly that might get me misgendered, but th more i began to 'pass,' th more @ home n my body i felt, th more and more comfortable i am w femininity, th more i wdnt mind putting on a dress, as long as th general public wd see me as "a man in women's clothes." n my mind, i prescribe something not exactly th same but v similar to charlie.

i see charlie "i dont really identify" kelly as afab and nb. i see joyce as a "character" he originally created to distance himself from the dysphoria of putting on a dress as a young trans boy, but that became part of him as the hard lines he drew in the sand as a child became blurry with age and self acceptance. charlie's comfort with himself allows joyce to evolve into a more solid persona, one he enjoys embodying and allowing to become a permanent facet of who he is. he's ok with being referred to as either. they're both him.

so maybe joyce comes out a bit more outside of the bathroom now.

if geno ever knew that he, in some ending of his timeline, could become error, he would actually go insane.

he’s already kinda crazy. i mean being in a void mostly by himself (aside from being stuck with the kid that KILLED HIM) drove him to be insane enough to fight in front of papyrus while everyone basically called him a coward.

if, by some way, maybe geno leaving to the omega timeline after his timeline being picked off by error himself, he knew that he and error are the same, he would obsess over never being like error.

and ok maybe im biased but he meets cross they kiss theyre in love blah blah but geno’s still insanely obsessed with the fact that he and error are the same. how did it happen? what happened? why? will he be like that? is it fate? can he stop it? why would he ever destroy entire universes like some ruthless monster (disregarding the fact that he manipulated and hurt sans to get what he wanted; TO DESTROY HIS OWN TIMELINE)? he isn’t a bad guy like that. he always has everyone’s best interest in heart even if his ideas get a little unhinged (wow. sounds a lot like error doesnt it).

while obsessing over stopping whatever his fate may be, he slips further into it. geno became error because he “played with his determination” and sent himself to the antivoid. its infamous for making error and errors like him (proferror, circuit, blueberror). in an attempt to save himself, geno dooms himself to the same fate of his destructive counterpart.

maybe, in a parallel multiverse, he gets his lazy ass up and dedicates studies to ERRORS. he regards them as some other species and dedicates everything he has to figuring out what they are and, most importantly, how he can prevent himself from becoming one.

cross is a little worried about him.

i love the whole error is geno thing. its the best fucking thing CQ has ever done and not a single day goes by where i dont eat that shit up like my life depends on it. thinking about making an au of this ;P

Digimon 🤝 Pokémon

So. I don't like the idea that you can't be a fan of both Digimon and Pokémon. A while ago, I got an ask from a Pokémon fan asking how Digimon is any better than Pokémon, and I didn't really know how to answer that? I love both? I also like Yo-Kai Watch, by the way. You don't have to drag something down to elevate something else.

It does bother me that I sometimes get the feeling from certain kinds of Pokémon fans that they hate on Digimon, like it's their duty? I even had an argument with someone in real life who was convinced Digimon was a Pokémon rip-off, despite knowing nothing about Digimon in the first place.

But obviously, not all fans are like that, I'm a big Pokémon fan myself! I've played essentially all main line games and many side games. The Pokémon Special Manga was the first manga I read and is among my all-time favorites. I'm also active in my local Pokémon TCG community! I'm actually an official Pokémon TCG Judge, and I volunteer alongside my partner at our local card shops weekly "Pokémon School," where we teach children how to play the game. Although that sometimes also entails how to read cards, how to act respectful to your opponent, how to focus, what to look out for when building decks, how to tell if a card is fake, and much more...

That's another reason why I'm sad the Digimon Card Game only has an English language release in the West. Otherwise, I'd have introduced it to the kids already!

But yeah, I'm rambling a bit, my point being I don't want any hate, just love here. You don't have to like Pokémon. But it's definitely possible to like both.

So I wanna take a moment to show a couple of artists you know from the Digimon Card game who also like Pokémon!

Sanosuke Sakuma

Sanosuke Sakuma has been doing illustrations for the Digimon Card Game since the first set! Their strong point are cute characters, with most of their cards being of Baby Level Digimon (Lv.2) or Child Level Digimon (Lv.3). You can check out posts I did of their cards under #Sanosuke Sakuma

They also have been working as an illustrator for the Pokémon TCG since 2013 and have been working as character designer and illustrator for the main line Pokémon games since Pokémon Sun and Moon (2016).

GOSSAN

GOSSAN had been doing illustrations for the Digimon Card Game since BT-04 (2020) and have done over a hundred cards by this point. They're among the most likely artists to do game references and are very good at depicting action! Check out more of them under #GOSSAN

They also have been working as an illustrator for the Pokémon TCG since 2021 and already have a couple of Alternative Arts under their belt. Notably, they even got to illustrate the Alternative Art of Mewtwo Vstar, featuring it fighting Charizard, both of which are among the most popular Pokémon.

tessy

Tessy has been an illustrator for the Digimon Card Game since late 2020 and has been featured in almost every set since. Check out my posts featuring their cards under #tessy

While there is no Pokémon card featuring rheir art just yet, they entered and reached the semi-finals of the Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest 2022 with both their entries for Charizard and Bulbasaur.

Spareribs

Spareribs won second prize overall (and first for Devimon) of the Digimon Illustration Competition 2022 with their entry 「Fallen」. Ever since they've been working as an illustrator for the Digimon Card Game. You can see posts with their cards under #spareribs

They also entered the Pokémon TCG Illustration Contest 2022 and made it to the semi-finals with their entry for Greninja.

I just wanna talk about Tomura for a second. And yes, this is about the 419 leaks and how they've been bouncing around in my head for the past 24 hours. And I apologize in advance for how long this is probably going to be. 🫠

Something about it has been bothering me, and not from a writing stand point, I actually think it's written very well. But instead, it's that it's kind of left me with this weird, almost gross feeling every time I look at those panels. That visual of AFO reaching out to baby Tenko is disturbing in such a way that it's hard to really put it into words at first.

For not one second of his life, has Tomura known peace. Since his birth, All for One has literally had his hands on him. Tomura has just been told that his entire life was preplanned, down to his literal birth. And not once has anything he's done, said, felt, believed, or hoped for has been his own. Everything he's ever wanted has been the result of AFO meddling, even if he wasn't aware. And when he finally got his conviction, the thing that became his primary driving force as a villain, it had stemmed from his childhood.

His father abusing him, his quirk and the result of that awakening, and being ignored by people on the streets. Which, we don't have confirmation that AFO had anything to do with that last part, but the result still stands.

And I know a lot of people are iffy on the execution. That everything that happened to Tenko/Tomura was orchestrated by AFO so now his character means nothing and his journey was for nothing. And all I can think is, it takes a special kind of writer to weave a character in such a way that the audience is feeling that same dread, disappointment, and hopelessness that that character themselves is feeling at the reveal.

Just last chapter (418), we had Tenko/Tomura say flat out that he has to believe he chose to kill his family or none of it makes sense. He doesn't understand why he was born this way. He doesn't like the idea that it might not have been of his own control. He needs there to be a reason. And the reason he attributed to it his entire life, his way of coping with that fact, had been the lie AFO fed him that he was born for destruction. And that is what became his driving force.

Something that we, the audience, have been made aware of during Tomura's origin chapters. AFO tells him to embrace the power to destroy, as that is what his impulses tell him to do. He is the one who puts that idea into his head.

So, really, like Tomura, we were all gaslit by AFO into believing that Tomura wanted to destroy hero society and the world, just like he did his family.

And I can see why that can be a disappointment, or why it can feel like wasted time. Because AFO has just told us it was. Which is what I mean by us, the audience, being able to experience Tomura's emotions with him.

Which shows just how good of a character Tomura is. That this reveal can happen and we feel angry, and betrayed, and like everything we experienced was for nothing. We feel hopeless. How do you come back from this? Where does a character go from here? What is the solution?

And, I don't know, I'm not writing this story, but I have some thoughts about it.

The main one being that Tomura is still a person. He still lived a life. His life. Regardless of how and why he was born, where he lived, who raised him, he still existed. And maybe he was never meant to be alive. Maybe he could have grown up a normal child had his quirk not been messed with. But the fact remains that, he didn't. At the end of the day he still lived the life he did. Regardless of why it happened.

He can still feel the feelings associated with that upbringing. He can still speak on those experiences. Because they are his own. They happened through his eyes, to his body, in his mind. And, as much as AFO wants to take credit for their origins, it was still Tomura who had to live them. There is only so much of a person you can control. You can guide them in a direction, encourage them towards a specific goal, give them all the tools and pretend it was fate, but you cannot control how they react to it and what they take back from it as a result.

And I think it's possible that Tomura will realize that is the case. Most notably, it could (and I think should) come from his memories of the League. AFO didn't tell him to believe in Twice and Toga when they went to sabotage Overhaul. He didn't make him bond over video games with Spinner. He didn't plant the idea in his head to ask for sushi from the MLA because of a one off conversation with Compress.

Maybe AFO had some say in who joined the League when it was first forming. Maybe he was the one who told Tomura to make it in the first place (I'm pretty sure he was). But nothing he could say or do or touch could make Tomura connect with them the way he did. The friends he made and the bonds he formed and the person he became while he was with them, was still his own. And I think that would be a great way to resolve Tomura as a character.

Because, even if he wasn't technically a failure of hero society like the rest of them, even though all of the hatred he had for the world has been diminished into the fault of AFO, at the end of the day, it was Tomura who decided he wanted to be a hero to the villains.
