Episode 1: Female Sleuths & Self-Defense
"Hello, Pythians. It's been a while. Today we'll be discussing some sensitive subject matter. This includes but is not limited to domestic violence, child abuse, grooming, and murder," Barbara's tone allowed a hint of personal sadness. Her voice was subtly disguised with a Mid-Atlantic accent. Her voice was mature and robust, but there was something sweet and feminine about her cadence. The lilt in her voice was unlike her natural speech, but it added to the bit, along with voice-altering software. Oracle was a character, and she had to stay that way. She took a breath to collect herself. "Today, I have a special guest. She is loud and proud... And she is fighting to elevate the voices of domestic violence survivors during Gotham's lockdown. Miss Dinah Lance. Dinah, can you take a moment to tell us about yourself and your organization?" Barbara leaned back away from the mic as she put Dinah on speaker.
"Hi, Oracle. Well, as you said, I'm Dinah Lance. I've been in Gotham most of my life, and this organization is near and dear to my heart. Black Canary is my mother's non-profit organization dedicated to survivors of domestic violence. It goes back to before I was born.
"My mother lived in a community filled with women in violent and unstable relationships. She quickly realized that most of these women didn't have the tools they needed to escape, let alone protect themselves. So, she took it upon herself to secretly offer free self-defense classes in her apartment. My mother knew this wasn't enough, but it was all she could do at the time.
"Fast forward a few years. My mother married my father and got pregnant with me, and she had to take a break from offering classes. To her surprise, her neighbors took over for her. They went on to teach their friends everything they learned. Eventually, this led to a connection with lawyers, doctors, and childcare workers... And from there, my mom founded the Black Canaries.
"I was fortunate to grow up with two loving and supportive parents, and I took it upon myself as soon as I was old enough to continue what my mother started. Since then, we've expanded to all victims of domestic violence. Not just women," Dinah replied. She was obviously passionate about her cause.
Barbara made a soft noise to acknowledge all she'd heard. "I wanted to take this time to tell the listeners your organization now operates online. I left a link in the description... But I also wanted to ask about a specific case that's gained traction in the media. I understand that you've taken a personal interest in the Anna Stanfield case... You've also expressed discomfort with the long-time trend of giving murder cases nicknames," Barbara paused, "After a message from our sponsors, we'll talk about that and how this case is different from anything the Black Canaries have dealt with this far." Barbara played an ad for Ted Kord's tech company.
During that time, Barbara took the opportunity to quietly thank Dinah for the interview. "I appreciate you coming on the show, Dinah. I wanted to ask you personally if you'd like to come back to talk next month for Mother's Day?" Barbara asked.
"I would love to," Dinah replied, "And thank you for allowing me the opportunity to talk about Anna Stanfield."
Barbara smiled to herself. "Of course. It's always a joy to have you on the show," Barbara replied, "We're back on air in five... Four... Three... Two... Welcome back, Pythians. Before the break, I asked Dinah how the Black Canaries have taken an interest in the Anna Stanfield case and her critique of the media buzz surrounding this cruel Gotham slaying."
"Right. For everyone unfamiliar with the case, Anna Stanfield was an eighteen-year-old girl from Gotham. Last month, she got married to a man seven years her senior, and at some point on the first night of her honeymoon, she was brutally beaten and ultimately smothered to death.
"The media's taken this as an opportunity to talk about the lack of knowledge about her past. Instead of putting forth the efforts and energy to spread information about the case, they've focused on dissecting this girl's life to blame her for her murder. Her husband, Eddie Stanfield, is seemingly missing and has been since the discovery of Anna's body. Few efforts are being made to find him despite his history of violence toward women... And instead of being treated like a suspect, they are searching for Eddie Stanfield as a potential victim... Despite all evidence pointing to the contrary.
"What makes this case different from anything the Black Canaries have ever dealt with is the type of case that this is. Black Canaries deals with survivors. This is the first time we've ever dealt with a murder case. We're all working to find Eddie Stanfield and bring him to justice, and there's a lot I can't say legally... But I can say that we've got a few leads we're checking out," Dinah explained.
"I know you said you can't talk about the investigation for legal reasons, so I wanted to hear what you had to say about the nicknaming of the Anna Stanfield case as the Honeymoon Murder," Barbara replied.
Dinah took a breath before speaking. "With all the media buzz for the case, people have forgotten that Anna was a living, breathing person. People view this case as a form of entertainment rather than an actual murder of a real human being.
"The media's done a terrible job of depicting Anna's humanity. They've instead chosen to sensationalize her murder and reduce the brutal slaying of a teenage girl to nothing more than a series of puns and online memes," Dinah answered.
The two went back and forth, discussing the details of the case before their second set of commercials. "When we return from break, I'll introduce you to one of Gotham's best P.I.'s," Barbara announced.
The second set of commercials was three minutes long, allowing the two women to talk. "I hope I'm not talking too much. I don't wanna overwhelm-."
"You're doing fine, Dinah. Actually, I wanted to ask how you were doing? I've been following your work for a while now, and I saw that you've received threats-. Sorry, I sound like I'm still interviewing you. I wanted to know if you were okay," Barbara interrupted.
"It's okay... I've had worse. A few threats aren't going to scare me away from the truth," Dinah replied. Barbara pushed up her glasses and ran a hand through her hair. "Hell, if I wasn't mistaken, I'd think you were worried about me."
"I am," Barbara replied, "You know, Dinah... Let me know if there's anything I can do to help." Dinah made a soft noise.
"Keep an eye out for Eddie Stanfield... And boost my tip line," Dinah replied. Barbara could hear the smile in her voice. Barbara bit the cap of her pen before typing the tipline number and adding it to the description for the video. "You know what? I feel like I know you."
Barbara held her breath for a moment. "I make a point to get to know everyone I interview... Even if it's through research," Barbara half-lied. She didn't want Dinah to know they'd met before. Barbara's podcast identity needed to remain secret, not only for the safety of her daughters. The work she did in connection with her podcast was borderline illegal.
"It was so wonderful having you on the show, Dinah. I hope to hear from you in the future... I know you have to go, but I did enjoy speaking to you today," Barbara beamed. She chewed the cap of her pen as she waited to hear Dinah's voice.
"It was nice talking to you, Oracle... I'll keep you updated on the case," Dinah replied before hanging up.
She tossed her head back and ran both hands through her hair before calling another woman. "Hello? May I call you Question?" Barbara asked.
"Only if I can call you Oracle," Question joked. Barbara recognized the voice as ex-police officer Renee Montoya. She didn't see fit to mention it, though. Barbara chuckled.
"Of course, you can. We're about to go on air in a minute or two, and I want to let you know you don't have to answer any question you don't want to," Barbara reassured her.
"Let's get into it," Renee replied enthusiastically.
"Okay. We're back on air in five... Four... Three... Two... One. Welcome back. Before the break, I promised to introduce you to Gotham's finest private investigator, the illustrious and anonymous, Question. Question, would you like to take some time to enlighten the viewers on your connection to the Anna Stanfield case?" Barbara asked.
"Someone hired me to find and notify her family... A friend of Anna Stanfield who wanted to remain anonymous," Renee replied, "The issue is, Anna Stanfield doesn't exist. Or at least she didn't, up until a few months ago... But that made me wonder how Eddie Stanfield came to know her. She's an eighteen-year-old girl with no past, no known family, and no history... Not so much as a report card from her."
"It sounds as if you have some suspicions about the crime. Can you elaborate at this time?" Barbara asked.
"I've found some important information that's led me to a family within the city, but I'm not at liberty to say. The police have been notified. But I can tell you, I have reason to believe Eddie Stanfield is guilty of a series of violent crimes against Anna... And I'm not talking about her murder," Renee replied. Barbara took her pen and jotted down a note.
Silence fell between the two for a moment. "Are you-. Sorry, that's such a shock. I wanted to know if you were working with the Black Canaries or anyone else to get information on this case?" Barbara asked, stumbling over her words out of shock. She didn't think anyone would have any new information like this.
"Yeah, I've talked to Dinah before finding what I found... I told her I'd look into finding Eddie," Renee paused, "And I've gotten a bit of information from her as well."
"Can you tell us if that information led you to your most recent revelation?" Barbara questioned.
"Yes, actually, she did. Dinah personally went and found information of her own that led me directly to a series of truths that led to this mystery family," Renee replied, "We're not sure if they're her family for sure. We only know interesting circumstances surrounding them point to this case."
Barbara typed something on her computer while she listened to Renee speak. Barbara mulled over the details mentioned by both women and wondered if she should delay posting the episode another week. As it came to a close, Barbara pushed up her glasses and started the editing process.

Book Notes: Fantasy Roundup
Tumblr media
Or, some ideas for what to read when you have a book hangover from Iron Flame:
Curious Tides by Pascale Lacelle
When Emory is the sole survivor of a secret ritual in the caves below Aldryn College, her healer powers, given to those born during the new moon on a rising tide, begin to shift into something strange and uncontrollable. Will her estranged friend Baz, brother to one of the students who died, help Emory figure out her new powers and what really happened that night? This debut fantasy has it all — dark academia, an upper YA that crosses over beautifully into adult, a murder mystery, secret societies, forbidden magic, a pining romance and the most gorgeous book design I’ve seen in a while. The magic system is built around the moon phases and the tides. Curious Tides is book one of a planned duology.
The Hurricane Wars by Thea Guanzon
What happens when Talasyn and Alaric, two soldiers from opposite sides of an entrenched war meet on the battlefield and discover their opposing powers combine to create something entirely new and unexpected? They continue to absolutely hate each other while having to work together to save their people from an even worse fate. Of course. And we all know what happens when two attractive people hate each other. Drawing inspiration from Southeast Asia, debut Filipino author Thea Guanzon has penned a fun, fresh fantasy that balances an authentic depiction of the toll of conflict on a population with a strong cast of characters and all the political machinations of Machiavelli. The Hurricane Wars is book one of a planned trilogy.
Godkiller by Hannah Kane
In a world where gods, fed by the attention, prayers, and offerings of humans, can also be destroyed by them, three disparate people come together to travel to the ruined city that was the last stand in the wars between gods and people. Kissen, a godkiller for hire. Elo, a former knight turned baker. And Inara, a young girl whose life has become intertwined with a god of white lies, Skedi. The four travel together to Blenraden, hopeful that they will find a way to untangle Skedi from Inara. All the feels of quest fantasy with characters that are delightfully flawed and human. The world building was immersive and queer normative with a host of diverse characters. The religious and magic system was at once familiar but with enough twists to make it unexpected. Godkiller is book one of a planned trilogy.
The Fragile Threads of Power by V.E. Schwab
From page one of The Fragile Threads of Power, I was invested all over again in the world of the four Londons, seven years after the events from The Shades of Magic trilogy (also excellent, if you want to start there). The plot works together like interchanging gears, or a chess game, the movement of each character affecting the others, often unknowingly. There are characters from the original trilogy, new additions, and Tes, the one who, unconsciously, holds the key to everything. Schwab investigates power in this novel -- who has it and who controls it, and by whose standards its morality is judged. Schwab puts a lot of things in motion in this book, and only a few are resolved by the end. The Fragile Threads of Power is book one of planned trilogy. You can always go back and read The Shades of Magic series in the meantime!
What the River Knows by Isabel Ibañez
I can’t think of a more fun combination than 1880’s Egyptian archeological digs, a feisty heroine determined to find out what happened to her explorer parents, and a current of magic running through it all. When Inez Olivera hears that her parents, on a dig in Egypt, are presumed dead, she takes matters into her own hands. Inez books passage from Bolivia to Egypt, intent on discovering the truth. What she finds in Egypt is an infuriatingly handsome young man, assisting her guardian in carrying on her parents discoveries, and men thwarting her inquiries at every turn. Add to this a mysterious ring that connects Inez to the magic of the past and the questions continue to pile up. It will take a trip up the Nile and many near escapes just to get Inez closer to any answers. Packed with action, a slow burn romance, and a huge twist kept me enthralled to the very last page. What the River Knows is book one of a planned YA duology.
Hopefully you find one, or many, of these titles to be a satisfying read!

The Allure of Lori Harvey
A Social Analysis of the Modern Black Feminine
For the summer of 2022, Ms. Harvey’s social life is trending, due to her sudden and abrupt ‘amicable’. break up with Michael B. Jordan, who’s also known as baby Denzel and one of the most eligible black men in the world.
We can speculate that the relationship was fake, real, MBJ was played or trying to rehab his image or Lori just didn't want to settle down and we’ll likely never know the real reason they broke up, but we can unpack the mysteries of Lori’s femininity an allure and figure out why she is so polarizing, equally admired & despised.  But first? We need a little background for a clear picture!
Lori Harvey is the quintessential Black American princess + socialite of the mainstream urban & hood collective. The adoptive stepdaughter of Steve Harvey and progeny of Majorie ‘Lady Heroin’ Harvey, she was born into one generation of black wealth and the genetic lottery. Her biological father was a famed drug kingpin from Memphis who managed to snag her mother. Majorie was also a legend in her own right on the streets, known for her beauty, ruthless demeanor, a peculiar sense of lascivious and lavish tastes, while she courted and eventually married famed drug kings, gangsters and pimps, in the black underworld. Majorie was described as beautiful, intense, ruthless and hypergamous. There was no doubt in Majorie’s mind that she would make it to the top and she didn’t care how she got there. Majorie narrowly avoided going to prison, after being investigated by the FBI and moved on to higher pastures by cleaning up her image, setting her sights on seducing and marrying comedic legend Steve Harvey.
Tumblr media
Steve & Majorie Harvey

The glamour of a famous stepfather and the dangerous mystique of her mother's past has rubbed off on Lori, as it appears she intends to follow in her mother’s footsteps by doing the same, and marrying well.
This lends Lori an incredible amount of curiosity and admiration from the black feminine collective. Her personal style, diet and dating choices are all up for social inspection and which she seems to enjoy and utilize to her benefit.
Socially in the black collective, it’s not looked upon favorably for black women to openly date hypergamously. Some could say this fact is easily said for all other women, except for the black woman is drastically socially different. The black woman is expected to be completely self sacrificing to the detriment of herself, other women, black men and the mental and social health of the black community and world, at large.
Historically the black body has been seen as hypersexual cultural commodity and unfortunately still black women aren’t free from these archaic assumptions. This hypersexuality when paired with two hundred plus years of systemic racism & psychological terrorism has created a confusing and hostile climate for the social and mental health of the feminine in the black community. Anything feminine is inherently seen as detriment or looked upon with disgust or shame, in both black men and women. It's culturally ingrained and internalized, for Black women to be consistently expected to have lower standards in terms of partners whether it be mentally, spiritually, physically or financially and the collective actively participates in defeminizing an robbing black women of their individual self respect and womanhood. These toxic ideologies, have seeped into the black social structure and in the global& mainstream social collective, an have done irreputable damage, terrorizing and harming the social and mental health of both black men and women, whom have been passing down this vicious cycle of toxicity from generation to generation.
Tumblr media Tumblr media

In comes Lorie Harvey, who represents a new breed of Black American women in this modern social landscape who have grown tired of a horrible status quo, are hoping for better & who see fractions of themselves in her. She may not even know it but Lori actively carries a new hope of shattering the toxic glass ceiling prepared for black woman by creating a better example of the social options for the black female collective and maybe even the mainstream globally.
Lori is bold and actively hypergamous, dating some of the wealthiest black men in the community and making a clean break when things don’t work out. For the modern black woman this is considered to be highly unusual and makes her intensely polarizing and hated by certain groups of black men, women and the community who aren’t used to change and are comfortably brainwashed by status quo.
For many Lori represents a break from convention and social change of the modern evolution within the mainstream black feminine collective. Change is not easy and this new development is going to be extremely scary to many, for a variety of reasons. For some groups of men, this means having to put in more effort when finding a sexual partner or mate and losing certain benefits they felt previously entitled too, for outsiders this can also mean possibly losing access or the interest wealthy or high status black men financially or sexually that they also feel entitled to, it could even threaten centuries old racist structures which are were intentionally created to keep the black community currently unstable and foster hostility via gender wars. The current dating scene within the community is obviously toxic. The Modern Black women hasn't really built the healthy structure dating structure, that pushes her and the community to the highest good. Most black women are ignorant on how to go about dating properly or seeking out quality mates, which in turn creates a horrible cycle of toxicity. For many black women this has led to hyper paralyzed state of toxic independence, which has been severely harmful to both black men and women, something that can be further researched by taking the time to read the Willie Lynch letters. It’s important for black women to break this cycle which has been enforced since the beginning the Trans-Atlantic Slave trade, because it will actively promote better social and mental health for both black men and women, and in turn the entire community.
Tumblr media
Lori fits a certain beauty standard, which can be argued to fit within some Urban or Eurocentric ideals. She’s moderately brown skin, gently relaxes her hair making it wavy/straight, an has a slim nose and full lips. She’s relatively in shape partaking in Pilates, a bit of precarious dieting and her shape varies between lightly petite and curvy. Her resources give her access to a variety high quality skin care, plastic surgery and beauty treatments. Despite this, her beauty looks natural and feels more easily accessible. She takes a considerable amount of care in her looks and it’s certainly strategic on her part because she’s hyper aware of beauty privilege and the visual nature of men, which she works to her benefit. All of these things somewhat work in her favor, but also can lend way to her being ripped apart socially, because beautiful brown skinned black women aren’t often taken seriously within black collective, without an extremely well credentialed educational background or status, and this may still never be enough. She walks a precarious tightrope of gender and colorism. There is no way of knowing for certain if her behavior would be considered less controversial and tolerated slightly better if she was of lighter of complexion, like the semi-controversial musician and queen of hip-pop Doja Cat, for example. Colorism can be fickle and random, as symptom of systemic racism, which is aggravatingly hard to gage.
Tumblr media
Lori’s beauty, background and dating style seems to resonate mainstream black feminine collective who desires to find a new way to counter the deliberate defeminization of the black woman socially. This brings her a degree of considerable allure and magnetism an makes her a interesting woman to watch in the future.
How will it all end ? Will Lori finally find the right man for her ? Only time will tell.
In the meantime, let’s keep our eyes peeled n stay tuned. If there is one thing we can count on it’s for Lori to keep tongues wagging, while putting on a great show!

Quote
They looked like ‘40s movie starlets gone to hell, then raised from the dead in skintight rayon dresses, with blue, black and bleached-white hair. The ghostly Victorian pallor of their powdered faces, extreme kohl-rimmed eyes, and bloodred lip gloss reminded me of 1950s bohemian Vali Myers. All of which made these gothic apparitions of extreme femininity look that much more incongruous standing in the blazing California sun, in the parking lot of NBC Studios, Burbank. That’s where I first saw them, while waiting in line to see the New York Dolls taping a performance of The Midnight Special TV show. In the summer of 1973, I was a fourteen-year-old suburban curious cat, obsessed with glitter rock. The “glitter” look, a charmingly naïve expression of futuristic fashion, was actually derived from vintage wear. Gaudy and colourful iridescent clothing was the height of fashion. Spangled, sequinned teenage baby-whores in miniskirts and bikini tops roamed the Sunset Strip. Some of the better-known LA glitter girls of the time, like Sable Starr and Lori Maddox, even sustained their own fame and notoriety after being featured in the pages of teen magazine Star as the “Sunset Strip Groupies”. But glitter was also a throwback to the faded glamour of Hollywood’s yesteryear. The phrase “silver screen” was bandied about a lot in the rock lyrics of the era. In their low-cut blouses, tight pencil skirts, platform shoes and vintage jewellery, the quiet, sullen-looking girls who sparked my curiosity in the NBC parking lot stood a mile apart from the crowd. They looked like elegant femmes fatales and evinced romance and danger. I immediately wanted to know who they were. I sense a darkness about them that spoke to me, making me recognise something inside myself I had not previously acknowledge, a vignette around the edges of my luminous teenage daydream.

@tyla:thats my bestie💕
You arrived at Lori's party with your sister zai, you both started greeting every one there was really no new faces or anyone you didn't really know
Until "Zai and Zaire" you heard Lori call both you and your older sister to introduce you to a guy who you feel like you've seen bit not really.
"This is my guy friend Keith"
"Nice to meet you ladies"
"Keith this is Zai and Zaire some of my very best friends hope you guys get to know each other more" she said while walking away to greet more people.
"I'll go to" your older sister said leaving only you and Keith at the same spot
Keith looked at Zaire her beautiful brown skin her pearly brown eyes and breathtaking body that was heard not to look at.
Not a while ago Keith had broken up with his long term relationship girlfriend he wasn't really desperate for love but Zaire seemed to be one of the prettiest girls he's seen since which lead to these unholy thoughts in his head.
Keith shook his head coming back to reality he didn't even realize that Zaire started talking to someone else.
"Hey Zaire right?
"Yeah that's me" you said with a little giggle at the end
"How about we go take a walk in the backyard it's much less noisy out there"
"Sure" you said without hesitation
You and Keith were walking around this huge house's backyard talking about your life achievements and how life was before you were put on the spot light.
The more he heard you talk the more Keith fell for you he was trying not to get to attached of course because it was you guys first time meeting but it seemed impossible.
You stopped and sat on a bench that was next to a tree in the backyard
Keith looked at your eyes that are impossible to forget you looked at him too to gonna lie you do find him.
In a split second you find yourself and Keith kissing on the bench you closed you eyes as his soft lips crashed into yours you felt butterflies in your stomach.
But it all came to an end when you heard you sisters voice "Zaire I'm leaving do you wanna stay"
You broke away from your kiss taking your purse back in your hands "I think I have to go now" you told Keith as you started walking away.
"Yo- Zaire" he called after you "can I at least get your number- O or even you Instagram" he yelled out but you were already going.
"Well it was nice seeing you guys here" Lori said while hugging you goodbye
"Yeah it was nice too"
"Well by" you said before leaving
On the other hand Keith was frustrated sad because you left and disappointed in himself because he should have asked you for your Instagram before all that happened.
Soon enough Lori noticed his behavior and ask him "what's the matter Keith are you ok"
"No I'm not but you could make me feel better if you give me Zaire's Instagram"
"Ok" she said in a confused tone
"Wait Keith don't tell me that..." She Ross one eyebrow before coming to the conclusion
"You like Zaire" she said in a teasing tone.
They both looked at each other before bursting into laughter.
"Ay I'm just sayin she's mad fine"
To be continued

🥕, 🥭 , 🍑 and 🥑 for Neets!
🥕 [CARROT] How tough is your OC against certain situations? How weak are they against others?
They're tough enough to straight up their shoulders, keep their foot down and firm, and eyes determined to fight back, to argue back, and to point things out.
The only times they would've been weak is when they're at the lowest shields or no shields at all, how they step back a bit with arms crossed together to keep their hands in, how their fingers claw into their arms, and just shaking their head. Just. no. no. no-
🥭 [MANGO] What colours best represent them and why? Does this differ from their favourites?
I think everyone, even the ones who knew them for a looong time, knew anita is all about green. It's the most representation in a way that beside being a favourite of theirs, it was a color that usually describe scholar-like and nerd-like characters, and sometimes sidekicks- so why not?
Also, it really suits them, and just... feel right tbh.
🍑 [PEACH] How do they show their kindness? How kind are they truly?
If this was Sidestep!Anita, they would've say 'hey i thought you would like this' or so-so while giving you something to show their kind. But present Anita, they... don't say it. They will merely show their actions better than words. even smaller words too.
...Sometimes, they will say things like looking out for you, and scoffs when being told that they're kind. they're not. (they truly are.)
🥑 [AVACADO] What will they never back down about, even if it makes them seem bad?
"If no one was going to do this, then I will."
They're selfish in pursuing whatever the truth is, they want to show the world why the public shouldn't trust the government. They would scare people into believing that no, no one will protect you.
They want to torn your safety blanket and says, "is this what you want? do you want this?" and they're harsh about this. That's what Harbinger is all about.
While it sound like a good reason because duh, government sucks! but the way they act on it makes them seem bad. and anita knew it, they already signed up for it.
After all, they're a villain, right? Then, let the people fear them to realize that shits not a sunshine place to begin with.
thank you for the ask!! send me a interview ask and i will answer!
