Heyo! Anyone want some Lin Fanart? :D
Here you go!
Tumblr media
I'd like to think this is right after Suyin hurt her and Lin may or may be blinded 👀💧
I'm not exactly good with expressions but I wanted to show Lin in both pain but also the anger and hate in her eyes.
All art belongs to me. If reposted plz credit!
Accidentally written a little one shot that's horrible. I meant to take a nap but just sat in my living room typing this and munching on food!
Enjoy- tho I doubt it'll be good 💀
Suyin would undoubtedly be upset she hurt her sister, but wouldn't be prepared to see this expression. An expression she's never seen on Lin before and is possibly ingrained in her mind forever.
Suyin would go to help Lin but Lin would refuse to let Suyin any closer and literally build a wall preventing Suyin from getting close.
Toph shows up and asking what happened, comforts Suyin upon feeling the little ones erratic heart beating all before Suyin tells her mother she's sorry and that Lin's hurt.
Toph goes to see what happens and all she hears is Lin barking at the healer to just do what they can and a slam of a door closing. Toph could sense something is wrong with Lin and can tell she'd faint at any moment if she don't step in only for Lin to hold her hand up at her mother and tells her, "Not now."
Before Toph could say anything Lin tosses her metal coils down on the ground and telling Toph that they'd need to be upgraded and that it's best for everyone in the facility to get them reworked.
Lin's face begins to swell up, the blood is trickling onto the ground and the healer helplessly following Lin around as she's barking orders but is starting to sway and almost faint.
Toph ends up freezing Lin in her place with her metal armor just to help the poor healer out and demands Lin to tell her what happened.
Lin straining too much and only just begins to fall to her knees as she can't fight against her mother in the state she's in, her heart aches, her face feels in agony and she feels ready to fall asleep.
The next thing she knows, she wakes up in a dimly lit room. She could smell the incense and the sandal wood and the light smell of spring in the air. She could hear yelling down the hallway between her aunt and mother, Suyin screaming that it was Lin's fault and of course the numbing pain on Lin's face.
She knew what happened and knew how bad the wound was. She didn't need a healer to tell her how bad the wound was because she felt it, could already sense her other senses strengthening.
With a sigh the metalbender slowly turned her head which made the blood in her head pump and practically caused her brain to ache as she tried to look out the window.
It took too long for Lin to focus and could see the sun had set a bit ago. She'd sit up and leave if she could but just the thought of it hurt Lin's head and she didn't want to go through that pain.
"We don't arrest family!!"
"And look what happened! Agni Toph, Lin got hurt and Suyin's in shambles! I'm not asking you to arrest Suyin I'm just asking you to help her. Ground her! She needs a mother Toph, not an absent one!"
"If I need any advice from you I'd ask! It's just a scratch, Beifong's don't get hurt!-"
"Mom?-"
"-And what do you know about raising kids Sugar Queen? Your two oldest couldn't wait to leave you and where are they now?!"
"-Aunt Katara?-"
"-That's not fair and you know it! They're grown up! Let them do as they and ex- you know what? Forget it! Since you're blind to see what's in front of you I'll tell you! Lin hates you and you don't know why! You're so concerned about your job, about your name, about your position, about metalbending that you forgot what's important!"
"And what's so important huh?!"
"That Lin is important too!"
The silence is what stung Lin the most. Maybe it was the hesitance or maybe the fact that her mother took a whole 10 seconds to finally respond. It was enough for Lin to realize her mother never saw Lin on any level of importance in a very long time.
"So what. She's a big girl, she doesn't need me. She didn't need me when she started tying her shoes, she don't need me now."
Lin sighed felt tears prickle in her eye before quietly crawling out of bed and out the window. She made her way down to the beach and sat down mauling over her aunt and mother's words.
Maybe her mother was right. Maybe Lin was the first to start pushing everyone away. Maybe she forgot what family was. It would make sense why her mother and younger sister were close and how she wasn't. Maybe Lin stopped being apart of the family once she realized she was nowhere near the same as them. When she was the one ruining their fun and becoming a "party pooper."
And even if that was true, even if it were very much apparent, it didn't hurt any less. People used to tell her how much her mother and her were alike. Nicknaming her Little Toph or Tiny Beifong. That she was going to be just like her mother and become a great metalbender.
She thought that since she looked like her mother, became an officer like her mother, bent the same stones as her mother, that she and her would share a bond. A bond that no one would understand but them.
It hurt her once Suyin was born, it was like Toph and her clicked right away and suddenly Lin wasn't Little Toph anymore. She became Miss cranky pants or miss you're-not-Suyin's-mom. She was no longer little Chief but an annoyance to her and her mother. A nag that ruined the fun.
The more people saw Suyin and Toph together the more they said Suyin was exactly like her. Rough, abrasive, strong, stubborn and a powerful metalbender.
A metalbender. Lin just realized why her mother favored Suyin over her. It was because Suyin was a great metalbender. Maybe that's why she loved Suyin more than her.
Lin ran her fingers through the coarse sand and stared up at the moon. Was she always this different? Was she ever in the spotlight to begin with? Lin didn't know but she knew she'd have to accept that she'll never be good enough. Even as she thought these things, Toph was probably taking care of Suyin because she was upset.
Maybe one day Lin would be a true Beifong and everything will be fixed. One day where she was just liked her mother and sister and they could be happy. One day where she didn't become a buzz kill.
Maybe one day she'll be a great metalbender that was worth her mother's time. She just hoped it was soon rather than later. She didn't want to be the only one left behind.

Some chats about Lin in discord led to this angsty sketch. We were discussing how if an officer was ever KIA, Lin would’ve visited the family herself to share the news. I immediately pictured Lin handing back a badge to that officer’s wife. 😩

I haven't yet checked if this aligns with the timeline but in my head Lin and Tenzin's relationship fell apart very soon after Aang's death.
Like I think they were actually very good together, which may also be the reason they're so bitter now. But Aang's death would have crushed Tenzin but also added to the pressure of having to continue the Air Nomad legacy.
Like you're not only dealing with grief from your father dying but also 'oh fuck I'm the last airbender fuck fuck' and since Lin didn't want children, I think that's where the cracks would start to show

I believe that Tenzin actually made a betrothal necklace, but since we don't see Pema wearing any, I believe he made it for Lin, and since they don't end up together, the necklace now sitting collecting dust inside a box he kept on his study. He can't bring himself to give it to Pema because when he crafted it, it wasn't her in his mind, but he can't make another one either cause it's something he holds sacred. That betrothal necklace was the closest thing he got to marrying the love of his life, yet when he decided to not giving it turned out to be the lost of his life. So, every once in a blue moon, he would open the box, admiring the necklace and wising it was wrapped around Lin's neck rather than collecting dust in his study.

I will never get over the Suyin playing cupid trope and if you can't either than you should go read chapter 11 of A United Front
Still not convinced here's an excerpt of Lin and Kya rizzing each other up
I've posted about 1/2 of the complete story on AO3 now and I think yall deserve a special shout out your comments and theories are so inspiring and I hope I can post the rest of it soon. I'm up to 90K words now and I PROMISE those of you waiting for angst, it is coming.
But for now, enjoy these two awkward gays trying to flirt with each other
“Lin call me crazy but I think you enjoyed yourself, even if you did slip a bit of work in at the end.”
“Having someone to fight other than my sister helped.” Lin said plainly.
“I see,” Kya said, “so in summary, you like having me around.”
Lin watched her family walk inside, busied by their own chatter and reflections of the evening. Suyin offered pointers and Bataar offered his excitement and encouragement.
When they were inside, she turned back to Kya, who was watching her a little too intently.
The sky had darkened significantly, Lin hadn't noticed before, but the stars were out. The sky wasn't quite black, but rather a stark shade of navy. The moon was almost full, a few more days and the fox-wolves would be audible from inside the dome.
“Maybe I do,” Lin replied. “Would that be so bad?”
Kya seemed surprised, looking from Lin, to the house, to the sky before her eyes landed back on her.
Lin's stomach tumulted in nervousness, or excitement, or both.
You're not exactly subtle.
Suyin was right, she wasn't subtle. She never had been. When she was angry she made it obvious. When she was frustrated she was expressive. She had held a grudge for twenty years because of how un-subtle she was.
“Not at all,” Kya answered, her eyes darting back and forth with nervousness.
There was a knock on the glass, so Lin looked to see her niece waving her over.
“That can't be good,” Lin said, looking back to Kya.
“Always the pessimist.” Kya laughed, brushing past her. Her shoulder nearly made Lin stumble with the impact. Kya's face turned at just the right angle that Lin could see a grin form when she thought Lin couldn't see.
Lin sighed contently before following the others inside.
She watched Kya in front of her, hoping the waterbender wouldn't turn around and catch her smile.

Had this Kyalin fic idea wherein the reason kya and lin doesn't interact is that there was a major fall out or unresolved incident that happened to them when they were young. Also, I know Kya approached Lin one time, trying to sort out things but only end up bursting like volcanoes, and then it got worse. Kya would definitely be the one to chase Lin around, trying to talk to her when they are in one room but would just stop and turn around. And Lin will absolutely regret holding on her grudges.
I don't know if someone already made this cuz obv I haven't read a fic which basically have this plot.

Sad Angst
Not the biggest Linvira shipper but I’ve read some absolutely adorable fics for them. So hear me out for the angst. I feel like with Lin being older and with her self sacrificing attitude everyone would expect her to be the one to die first… but what if she didn’t ? Kuvira is young, and blinded by ambition. Imagine her falling into a relationship with Lin while trying to redeem herself. Going on dangerous missions across the EK to try to make things right after the end of her house arrest… and one mission goes south. Leaving Lin alone…again.

*Beta Reader needed for a Lin Beifong/female OC centered fic on AO3*
Never mind!! I’ve found my beta!!! Position filled!
Concept art in progress.
Details: female OC is autistic, additional character has Down Syndrome.
Pre-canon LOK (only 1-2 years before the start of the show).
Rating: Explicit.
*Content warnings*: heavy topics, including:
-Trauma/PTSD
-Past mentions of rape/non-con
-Graphic descriptions and/or depictions of violence
-Past mentions of domestic violence/abuse
-Mental and physical health issues
-Death (mainly discussions/mentions of, but animal death…. Sorry)
-Ableism
-Potential homophobia and sexism (likely only lightly addressed, but we’ll see)
-Eventual explicit sexual content
Hello all! As a person who loves Lin Beifong and LOK, I came to the conclusion that there are just not enough Lin-centric fan fictions out there, and there SURE AS HELL aren’t enough Lin Beifong/female OC pairings. And there are NO Lin Beifong/neurodivergent OC pairings (at least that are explicitly tagged/stated as such). Sooo, I figured I’d write my own, because the dynamic will be interesting and fun to play with. I’m planning to write a 2-3 part fic, each part being 200k+ words. This fic will fit the trope of enemies to friends to lovers, and will be a story of self-discovery and self-love as much as it will be a slow burn love story between two women.

[ Kya and Lin arguing. ]
Kya: And I think you don’t like me having a good relationship with my family because Toph and Suyin hate you!
[ Lin just stares at her. ]
Kya: Lin, I’m so sorry. That was over the line.
[ She leaves. ]
Kya: Lin! Please don’t leave! Up until my vicious outburst you were the one in the wrong!

The Box at the Back of the Closet
Trying to keep Suyin occupied, Lin led her little sister by the hand into their mother's room and opened The Closet. It was just a regular closet that houses their mom's day-to-day clothes. No. This was The Closet their mom always said to not play in unless she was home because of the dresses and the shoes and all the other expensive stuff her parents send her or that she has to wear to those parties that they're not allowed to go to.
But today was just so boring. It was raining too hard outside to go to the park or to do anything really, and Lin was stuck babysitting Suyin while their mother had to run to the station for a while. It's okay though. Hanging out with Suyin had its perks sometimes; she was actually a pretty cool kid to hang out with.
Lin is twisting in the mirror watching the way the jewels on the dress and on her headpiece catch in the light. The dress wasn't the fanciest one by far, but it had always been her favorite. The soft blue color with small accents of the Earth Kingdom green of the dress hangs loosely on her, not yet filled out by her frame. Her body was just starting to change, but until then, she'd just have to imagine what the dress would look like in its full beauty.
Behind her, Suyin continues to dig through the closet, apparently looking for the other white satin glove that she swears up and down it goes with the current dress she has on. "Hey! Look at this," comes her small voice from the back of the closet. In the mirror, Lin looks behind her as Suyin slowly emerges from the forest of dresses holding a decorated box, obviously handmade and badly done at that.
Lin furrows her brow and turns around to go to her younger sister to take a look. The click of her mom's shoes on the stone floor make her feel like a princess, someone worthy of wearing dresses like this all the time. Taking the box from her sister's hands she is surprised by the sheer weight of the thing. Lin grips it with one hand, opens the lid with the other, and peers inside. Suyin, next to her, stands up on her tiptoes to look inside as well. "It looks like a bunch of crap," Lin says, her voice a little awestruck. Their mom never kept anything, especially random crap. Well, she kept almost everything that she and Suyin gave her. There was a whole box under their mom's bed of the stuff they'd given her over the years.
But their mom was a minimalist, keeping the apartment free of clutter and junk to make it easier for her to move around. She didn't see the point in decorating since she couldn't see it so the only decorations were the stuff that Lin and Suyin put up.
Together, they sit down on the floor. Suyin's small hand grabs a small stone... something. It's obviously carved and worn smooth by hand, but what it's supposed to be is lost on her. Looking back in the box, there are several folded pieces of paper. Picking the one up off the top, she opens it.
Immediately, Lin becomes even more confused. It's a letter written in Braille. Braille machines were expensive back when they were first invented so they never had one. Honestly, Lin didn't even think her mom knew how to read braille. She absolutely refused to buy one of the machines even as they became more affordable and the need for her to read things became more and more important.
"That's what I've got you for, little badgermole," Lin remembers her moms saying at one point as she nuzzled her face into Lin's neck.
"Is that braille?" Suyin asks, looking over at the piece of paper. The little stone is still in her hand and she is turning it over and over, feeling the small ridges with her even smaller fingers.
"Yeah. I don't know why mom would have a letter written in it though. I don't think she knows how to read it, she always gets me to read the stuff that comes to the house or you bring home from school."
"Can you read it?" Suyin lays her head on Lin's shoulder and they stare at the paper.
"Kind of. it's been a while since I've read braille, so it's going to take me a minute. Let's bring this into the kitchen so I can translate it." Together, the girls stand up and bring the box to the kitchen table. Once the box is deposited on the table, they split up. Suyin to get paper and a pencil from her school bag and Lin to get her old translation guide for braille she had to have for school one year.
When they make it back, Lin sits at the table with an ever-patient Suyin staring over her shoulder. It's slow work, but as Lin translates the letter, the more confused she gets.
October 15th
Toph,
It's cold here in the Fire Nation, something I know you're glad you're not experiencing. Zuko is planning on taking a week off during the summer and is going to invite the rest of the gang to go to Ember Island, so I thought I'd beat him to the punch and invite you. There aren't enough beds for everyone, but maybe we could share one? Or not. Totally up to you.
Katara, I think, is enjoying pregnancy. She's got this weird glow going on and whenever Zuko sees her walking around or lifting anything, he rushes over and takes it from her and tells her she has to be more careful and all this other annoying dad-to-be bullshit.
I should be leaving here in another week or so, I'll send another letter before I do though so you know to feel for me. I'll be home soon and we can get together and go get a drink or something.
Love you always and give Lin kisses for me,
Sokka
Sokka? Like Uncle Sokka? Why would their mom keep a letter from him? In all the times Toph has received a letter from someone, she gets Lin to write a reply and then the letter goes in the trash within that day. So why would some stupid letter about a vacation and Aunt Katara's pregnancy be something to keep?
"Let me see the next one," Lin holds her hand out and Suyin digs through the box and pulls out another.
This one is dated several months later:
April 3rd
Toph,
I can't believe it's already been a few weeks since I last saw you, it feels like it's been months! Dad and Bato are getting married in a few days and I don't know what's weirder: knowing my dad is marrying his guy best friend or the person he is marrying is Bato. Like, who would want to marry him?! You should hear how loud that guy snores, I swear he is louder than you. Whatever, I guess I'm happy for them, even if it means I have to be away from you for a few weeks.
When I get back, we should just stay in the bed for a few days, and catch up on everything we would've been doing while I was gone (I just know you would punch me if I said that in person).
I can't wait to see you. Love you always and give Lin kisses for me,
Sokka
"What did he mean when he said 'catch up on everything we would've been doing'?" Suyin's innocent voice asks in Lin's ear.
"Er- nothing. Just the stuff hanging out and stuff," Lin blushes hard. She tries not to gag at the thought of her mother doing that, especially with Uncle Sokka. The real question is when the hell did her mom and Uncle Sokka get together?! Is that what this is, a bunch of mementos? Uncle Sokka mentioned Lin at the end of his letters but not Suyin, so it had to have been at least 9 years ago. The date at the top doesn't have a year, so it's really just grasping at straws for the timeline.
"Can we do another?!" Suyin asks, pulling Lin from her thoughts.
"Yeah. Give me the next one."
May 10
Toph,
I'm sorry. I really am. I shouldn't have said those things about Kanto, you were right, it's not my place. I hate fighting right before I leave for a trip. I swear I'm going to make it up to you. This convention shouldn't take more than a week, a week and a half at the most, and I'll come straight home to you.
I love you. Give Lin a kiss for me,
Sokka
This letter is short, so it doesn't take a long time for Lin to translate it. The name Kanto, sounds familiar, but she can't place where she's heard it before. At the end of the letter, Uncle Sokka said 'I love you', as in he was in love with her mom. Not the casual 'love you' like it was in the previous two letters.
Lin remembers Uncle Sokka being around a lot when she was really young, but once he moved, the visits became less and less often. She doesn't think she ever saw them kiss or do anything that would signify a relationship, but then again, she was young, younger than Suyin. She didn't know what relationship stuff looked like or what to even look for, so it surely could have been happening without her knowing.
Without saying anything, Suyin digs into the box and pulls out another letter, and hands it to Lin.
July 23rd
Toph, my love,
I can't seem to sleep tonight, my thoughts keep drifting back to you. I miss you so much, I miss the way your skin feels, how soft it is. I miss your laughter and even your punches. I'm not sure how much longer I can stay in the Fire Nation because not seeing you is driving me crazy.
What have you been doing the past few nights? Does Lin climb into bed with you when I'm not there? Do you lay there at night awake like me?
I can't wait to see you. I miss you so fucking much, I feel like I'm going to implode if I don't touch you soon.
I almost slipped up and said something to Zuko about you the other day. He asked why I was being such a pain in the ass and that I needed to get laid. I almost said something about you then but caught myself at the last moment.
When can we tell people about us? At least Zuko, my sister, and Aang. It's so hard to not talk about you like that, not to say how much I miss you and how much I love you. I can already hear your voice giving me shit for being a sap and saying that it would threaten your chance at getting Chief of Police. Although, in my opinion, that position should already be yours. But, I know that's another conversation you're sick of.
Just know that I love you always. Give Lin a bunch of kisses for me and that I got her a present.
With all my love,
Sokka.
Lin feels dirty reading that one like she is really invading her mother's privacy. Well, technically, she is... but still. This letter... it seemed like they were really something serious. She looks next to her at Suyin but finds her sister already gone. She can hear her down the hall in their mother's room playing in the dresses again. She must have lost interest in the box. The small sculpture is sitting on the kitchen table by itself, already forgotten.
Looking back at the table, her eyes land on the box that is sitting on the table across from her. With shaking hands, she reaches out and pulls it towards her. Peering inside hesitantly, she sees a few more badly made sculptures, a couple more letters, a few random rocks, a couple of rings, and a smaller box that is half hidden beneath the letters.
Lin pulls out the rings and looks at them. They're nothing special, really. Both are silver with no stones or gems on them. One band is smooth and quite large, no way in hell it could fit their mother's dainty fingers. The other, she thinks has braille on the inside of the band. She has to squint her eyes to be able to make it out, but she is instantly able to recognize what it says.
Sokka.
Are these... no. No. there's no way. No way these are what she thinks they are.
Looking into the box again, Lin grabs the small box that is tucked in the corner and carefully pulls it out. when she opens it, there's another letter that is folded up inside. Unfolding it, she begins to read,
January 31st
Toph,
I know you think that you have to do this all on your own, but you don't. You have never had to do this all on your own. You know I love you and that I want to be with you, so please, just consider my proposal.
This baby, our baby, is something amazing, not a burden and I'm not asking you to marry me out of obligation or pity. I'm asking you out of love, I swear. I know you can tell I'm telling you the truth. I should've asked you sooner. I should have asked you to marry me instead of saying... instead of saying what I did.
What I said at first... it was wrong. I can't even write it out. I just panicked and I can't imagine how panicked you must have felt. And then for me to go and say something like that... It was so wrong of me to say that and I wish I could take it back, I wish I could just grab the words and shove them back in my mouth.
Please, Toph. I love you so much. Please don't let this be the end. I'll wait for you until the end of my days.
Sokka
Lin's eyes are filled with tears by the time she reaches the end of the letter. Uncle Sokka is Suyin's dad? And he proposed?!
Looking up from the letter, her eyes land on the smaller box that lies open. There's a velvet pouch inside and with trembling fingers, she pulls it open and dumps its contents into her hand, and immediately, the air leaves her body.
An engagement necklace, just like the one Aunt Katara wears. The ribbon is a dark green and in the center of the stone, there's what looks to be a sword... maybe... and the Earth element symbol. It's very badly done, but Lin can feel just how much work went into making this necklace and the love it was made with.
Looking back over to the pair of rings, to the engagement rings. Every nation had its own ritual for marriage and for engagements: Water Tribe had the necklaces, Air Nomads had tattoos, Fire Nation had small burns on the chest-  over the heart, and Earth Kingdom had rings.
Uncle Sokka must have made both for her, and she still turned him down.
Why???
Lin swipes her finger over the engraving of the stone on the necklace. Before she can react, she hears the front door open. Whipping her head over to where she sees her mother walking in the door, Lin shoots to her feet and begins to quietly shove things back in their place in the box. From the corner of her eye though, she sees her mom pause and turns to look at her.
A sly smile comes onto her mother's face, "Whatcha trying to hide there, little badgermole?" She walks over to the table and Lin sits there frozen, one hand holding the velvet bag with the necklace carefully tucked back inside, and the other hand grasping a few letters.
"Nothing!" Lin says, and even she can hear how her voice shakes.
Toph looks taken back for a second, confusion furrows her brow. "Why are you lying?" her hand reaches out and grasps Lin's arm and feels along her forearm to the papers that are clenched in her hand.
Lin watches as realization dawns on her mother's face. "Mom," her voice sounds thick with emotion and she tries to shield the box on the table from her mom with her body as if it would do anything.
Gently, Toph pulls the papers out o Lin's hands and feels along them with her fingers. The tips of her fingers just barely touch the page as it glides across. "Where did you find this?" Toph whispers, her voice sounding broken.
"It was in the back of your closet. Suyin and I were playing in your dresses. I know you told us not to! To only play with them when you are home, but she was so bored and I-" the minuscule shake of her mom's head shuts her up.
Neither one of them speak for a moment. Gently, Toph refolds the letters and places them back into the box, her hands ghosting across the top of the table for the rest of the items. She grabs the small stone and places it in the box when her pink brushes against the box that contained the necklace and she yanks her hand back as if she was burned. Her face is carefully devoid of emotion.
"Why didn't you marry him, mom?" Lin asks.
Toph sucks in a sharp breath and her gaze flickers upwards toward her daughter's voice. "You can read braille?" she whispers.
"I had to a few years ago in school, it was a requirement. Since when do you read it?" A small bubble of anger is starting to emerge inside Lin's chest. How could her mom keep this from her? How could her mom turn down...
"Sokka... he-" it's weird hearing her mom refer to him as just 'Sokka' rather than 'your uncle' or 'Uncle Sokka'. She always said the uncle part. "He invented braille machines. He invented it for..." she trails off. Taking a deep breath, Toph pulls a chair over and sets herself in it gently. "He invented it for me. He taught me how to use it."
"Why didn't you marry him? He loved you, even I could tell just from those letters." If Lin hadn't been staring so intently at her mother, she would've missed the flinch. The anger in Lin's chest rises higher. "Why didn't you marry him, mom?! He's Suyin's dad and you wouldn't even-"
Toph immediately stands from her chair and claps a hand over Lin's mouth. "Don't you ever say that out loud."
"Why not?! She has a right to know! Fuck, even I have a right to know who my dad is, but you fucking refuse to tell me." Lin knows it's dangerous to cuss at her mom. Knows it's a quick way to grounding and being made to deadlift a rock for hours. But Toph just closes her eyes and falls back into the chair.
Toph takes a deep breath and runs a hand through her hair, knocking some strands loose from its bun. "Your dad's name is Kanto. He was a good man, but... he panicked at learning I was pregnant and he-" she cuts herself off and shakes her head.
Immediately, the anger drains from Lin. Kanto. She read that name in one of the letters. Uncle Sokka was apologizing for something in rregardto that person. And he... he left when he found out her mom was pregnant with her. And Uncle Sokka said something that probably bordered on bailing and freaked her mom out.
"Mom," she asks, her voice gentle like she's approaching a wounded animal. "Mom, did you think that Uncle Sokka would..." she has trouble bringing herself to say it. "Did you think that he would leave because you were pregnant?"
Toph closes her eyes and a single tear escapes, running down her cheek. "Go change out of that dress and put it back. And put back whatever your sister has dragged out." Her voice is tired and completely raw.
Lin nods and leaves her mother alone at the kitchen table to go get her sister.

The Beifongs and the theme of running away or being forced out of their home. Like why does this keep happening to them. Toph running away from home Lao leaving Gaoling due to the decline of his relationship with Poppy, Suyin being forced to leave Republic City, Opal leaving for the Air Temples, Kuvira and Baatar Jr being banished, the Beifong family being captured and taken away from Zaofu by force.
Like it's a very obert theme but it's so fun because of the Beifongs association with Earth, which is meant to be 'stable'. And their association with metal which is often excavated from where it belongs and melted down/molded.
I keep thinking about these lyrics from Runs in the Family by Amanda Palmer:
But don't blame me because I can't help where I come from And running is something that we've always done well And mostly I can't even tell what I'm running from
Run from their pity, from responsibility Run from the country and run from the city I can run from the law, I can run from myself I can run from my life, I can run into debt I can run from it all, I can run 'til I'm gone I can run for the office and run for my cause I can run using every last ounce of energy
I cannot, I cannot, I cannot run from my family They're hiding inside of me, corpses on ice

i read your story and i like the linzin one even though most of them have sad ending. Would you make linzin ending for once? Like both of them never broke up, marriage, etc.
Thanks!
As for your question: probably not, end game Linzin doesn’t really inspire me these days. I won’t ever say “never” but I have a bunch of fic ideas and WIPs that aren’t endgame Linzin in the pipeline for now.

Kanto & Toph realize Lin is going blind due to genetics and they have to tell her
They felt dreadful for days, but today…today was much much worse.
Because today they had to tell her. Of course they had to tell her. Her eyes were failing, and their baby girl needed to know why it was happening so quickly.
Toph and Kanto spent the past few days processing the information, trying to come up with a game plan of how they would tell her, how they would help her, and how they would manage Lin’s impending blindness. It wouldn’t be terrible, after all, Toph knew what it was like to live a life without vision. But it was still an adjustment. An adjustment that even the Greatest Earthbender in the World, a blind woman, never wanted for her kid.
And she couldn’t stop shaking as she sat on the couch with Kanto, waiting for Katara to bring Lin home from school. She shouldered the blame of Lin’s disease, because how could it not be her fault? Toph was the blind one, not Kanto or his parents or even her parents suffered vision loss.
Just Toph.
Well, Toph, and soon, Lin.
Kanto’s warm hands wrapped around her clenched fists, and she relaxed ever so slightly.
“It’s gonna be okay,” he whispered soothingly into her ear. Toph sighed, leaning her head onto his. “We’re gonna be okay, Toph.”
“You don’t know that.”
“But it will be. You’ll teach her everything you know, and I talked with the school about resources for her…we can do this.”
She closed her eyes, letting the tears fall now. “She shouldn’t have to deal with this. I—I did this.”
“No you didn’t, Toph.” Kanto’s voice turned desperate, and his hands tightened around hers. “This isn’t on you, baby. It’s not.”
Just as she was about to open her mouth to speak, the door opened, and her heart sank.
This was it.
Katara led Lin into the living room, and once she was situated between her parents, Toph and Kanto took her hands in theirs.
“Hi Mama hi Baba.” Lin squeezed her parents’ hands, her tone indicating she was unaware of the tough conversation ahead.
“Hi baby girl,” Kanto replied. His voice sounded sweet, but Toph knew he was struggling to sound upbeat. “How was school?”
“It was fine. We got ice cream for lunch so that was fun!”
“That sounds nice, baby,” he said, kissing her temple.
“I’ll leave you guys so you can chat,” Katara interrupted before the talk began. After giving Lin’s forehead a kiss and Toph’s spare hand a squeeze, she whispered, “Talk tomorrow?”
Toph nodded. “Yeah. Thanks, Sugar Queen.”
Without another word, Katara slipped out of the Beifong house.
Together, Toph and Kanto took a deep, shaky breath, and began the hardest conversation of their lives.
“Linny,” Toph began, swallowing a lump in her throat. “Baba and I have to talk to you about something important.”
“What is it, Mama?”
“Well, you know how I see differently than y—than Baba?”
“Mhm. You see with your feet.”
Toph couldn’t help but smile at how smart her baby girl was. “That’s right, Lin. I see with my feet, because I can’t see with my eyes.”
She took another deep breath in, then out. “Well, it turns out that not being able to see with my eyes is—it’s something I can pass onto you. It’s something I was born with, and something you were born with.”
“What do you mean?” Lin asked.
“You—you know how your eyes are getting blurry, Lin?” Kanto began. “Well, you’re slowly losing sight in your eyes. Because, it’s something you were born with, like Mama.”
Toph shut her eyes as Kanto explained this to Lin, shame building up in chest.
Lin’s voice still sounded confused by the situation, and it broke Toph’s heart trying to explain this to her child. “I’m losing my eyesight?”
With a quiet, shaky sigh, Toph took Lin’s hand in hers. She had to tell it to her daughter straight. She had to face this mountain head on. “Yes, Lin. You’re losing your eyesight. You’re going blind.”
Silence filled the room, and Toph could feel Kanto’s heart break all over again. And the longer Lin was quiet, the more dread Toph was filled with. Her daughter hated her, it was plain and simple. Of course, it wasn’t the end of the world, being blind, but in Toph’s heart and mind, she failed Lin. She failed to protect her, and losing her eyesight as a kid… that was a fate much worse than being born blind. At least, it was in Toph’s mind.
“Linny?” Kanto finally asked. “What are you thinking? Do you have any questions? Do you understand what’s happening?”
“I understand.”
Another tear fell into Toph’s lap.
“Does...” Lin began, but then paused.
“Yes, baby girl?”
“Does this mean I get to be like Mama?”
Toph’s head straightened, and she sat on the couch confused. “Wh—what?”
“Will I get to be like you, Mama? I get to see like you?”
The breath that Toph had been holding left her lungs in a rush. Was Lin… okay with this? She… she didn’t hate her?
“W—well, I’ll teach you everything I know about seeing with your feet,” Toph said. “I’ll—I’ll teach you so you can be better than me.”
“Really?”
Much to her surprise, Toph found herself smiling. “Really.”
Lin wrapped her arms around Toph’s neck, and relief flooded her entire body. Everything would be okay, and Lin would be okay, and she was excited to be more like her mother.
This wasn’t what they expected for their daughter, but they could adapt. Toph and Kanto would give Lin the best life, and it didn’t matter how soon she’d lose her eyesight, they’d get through it together as a family.
And for the first time since they learned that Lin was going blind, Toph Beifong felt hopeful.
