Till the end of the moon review
I recently rewatched the drama and felt like reviewing the first Cdrama I ever watched. After watching some cdramas in the past 7 months since I first watched the drama, I now trust myself to write a decent enough review after somewhat familiarizing myself with the genre and overall cdrama space.
Rating: 9.5/10 (1000 bonus points for searing itself in my mind and staying there even after 7 months)
Acting: 10/10
Story: 9/10
Chemistry: 100000000/10

Costumes: 10/10

Production/Set Design: 10/10

Li Susu, an immortal time travels 500 years into the past to prevent the ascension of the Devil god, who goes on to destroy the world in the future. It's a story of love and hate, good and evil, redemption and damnation. The characters are very well conceptualized and depicted beautifully by talented actors, stunning costumes, really good hair and makeup, and great cinematography. The amazing production and set design along with impressive visual effects and CGI really immerse the audience in the world of TTEOTM. This was a high budget drama and it shows... each and every frame of the drama, it feels lavish. If you are even a little bit interested go watch the first episode and l promise you'll be hooked and end up finishing the drama.
Now unto my spoiler filled thoughts:
I find it interesting that the typical backstory themes and some character arcs of the male lead and the female lead have been swapped here. The FL usually has a dead parent or abusive household or terrible luck and so on. The ML usually comes to the FL's rescue or stands up for her and so on. We all know that Tantai Jin is Disney Princess coded given his dead mother, abusive and neglectful upbringing and his animal telepathy powers. LSS both as Ye Xiwu and LSS repeatedly saves TTJ and stands for him. While TTJ also saves her many times, he does not get a chance to stand up for her because she usually takes care of herself and she is not suspected or wrongfully accused where she would need someone to support her. Also, TTJ basically became a part of LSS's family as her uncle took him under his wing and he promised to stay in Hengyang Sect with her in ep 35 before all hell breaks loose. And who can forget that LSS marks TTJ with her Phoenix mark, typical ML behavior.
Their romance is my ultimate enemies to lovers pairing. It has just the right amount of fighting, messiness, animosity and angst for me. I feel that other pairings don't have enough of it for me to consider them as an enemies-to-lovers couple. Their visuals, their chemistry, their acting and the story everything was so great. Who else has three epic weddings in one drama? I am still not able to move on from this couple and drama.
While the misunderstandings were obviously supposed to lead to a turning point in the story, I feel like it was in character for them to jump to conclusions and assume the worst without fully thinking things through and which then led to them acting rashly. I mean both TTJ and LSS had bad history between them so in the early stages of their relationship where their trust in each other was shaky, it's understandable that they were prone to misunderstandings. Also, they're both not good at communicating with each other. In the mortal arc, LSS was never fully honest with TTJ and they never addressed their past misdeeds properly (like OG Ye Xiwu was very cruel to TTJ and he never talked to her about it and just brushed it off). In the immortal arc, TTJ deceived LSS when he became the Devil God.
For the most part the story was gripping, progressed at a good pace and conveyed many themes that become apparent on rewatches. Though it was obvious that the last 5 episodes and the ending were rushed because the censorship rules changed as they went into production. This was one of those dramas that needed at least 5-10 more episodes to properly flesh out the story. It was a missed opportunity that we didn't get to see LSS ruling the Demon realm and Ami's antics.
Another victim of the decreased episode count is the arc of the second leads. Tbh, I wish that Pian Ran and Ye Qingyu were the SLs but I think I would have enjoyed seeing the complete character arc of Xiao Lin/Gongye Jiwu and Ye Bingchang/Mo Nv and the resolution between them. That said it was appalling that they didn't bring back Pian Ran and Ye Qingyu in the immortal arc. I really missed their dynamic with each other and with the main leads. It is disappointing that they didn't even get an open/ambiguous ending to give us some closure and satisfaction.
The actress did a phenomenal job in making us hate her as Ye Bingchang and Tian Huan. Those characters as villians really worked as they were in a way the ones who had the markings of the female lead (these characters at the start of their stories could easily be heroines in any other story) but they turn into villians. Tantai Minglang was a good, serviceable villian and the actor did a lot with how little he was given. Di Mian was selfish and manipulative traitor who was almost scarily competent. I mean he did achieve what he wanted by becoming the Devil God and opening the Tongbei formation. The point of Devil God as a villian is not his character and his motivations but rather he represents our inner demons and how each of us has the power to overcome them.
Out of all the dramas I've watched, only TTEOTM's entire OST is on my regular playlist to listen to. Every time I listen to "Let's be like this for 10,000 years", I feel the love and tragedy of Sang Jui and Ming Ye's story all over again. It's impressive that a song can make you relive those feelings and the story every time you listen to it. All the songs fit wonderfully in the scenes they're played over and also make us feel those emotions again when listening to them separately.
On my first watch, the dream arc felt a little out of place and jarring, which, in hindsight, was probably due to the fact that it was my first cdrama. Upon rewatch I've come to appreciate that it gives a look into the age of Gods and it shows that the Devil God was so powerful that to stop him the Gods had to sacrifice themselves and only Ming Ye was able to survive. The action sequences here are just magnificent to watch and they definitely seem movie level. It also serves as a warning to the audience, LSS and TTJ that they could also have a tragic end if they don't learn the lessons from it. Unfortunately, in the mortal arc they did have a tragic end. However, in the immortal arc, TTJ is able to learn from his experience as Ming Ye and succeeds in defeating the OG Devil God and becoming the Devil God himself with control over his own destiny.
One of the most prominent themes of the drama is redemption and that love and compassion are powerful enough to change a person's fate. The themes of Taoism and Buddhism are evoked throughout the drama. There are also many other minor themes like the food is used as a guesture kindness (when LSS first gives TTJ a proper meal), affection/care (when TTJ gave LSS the goose themed meal), love (when LSS gives badly cooked meals to TTJ), betrayal and trickery (the poisoned porridge) and comraderie, friendship, brotherhood and familial love (when TTJ shares meals with his sect brothers and master). Both TTJ and LSS have dead moms, terrible fathers and great adoptive dads (Zhao You and Qu Xuan Zi), these are just some observations I made.
I may not love the ending but I don't hate it either as it was obvious to me that they reunite once again and live happily as a family (the audio ending really makes it clear). Even though I'm irritated we don't get to see it, I'm still satisfied that we get a hopeful ending rather than a tragic one.
Until now I've mostly been lurking in fandom spaces by liking and very rarely commenting and reblogging but never posting my own original post. The fact that my first ever post is on TTEOTM shows how much I love it. I'll probably be posting more TTEOTM analysis stuff so be on the look out for that if you're interested. Also, I welcome your recommendations as I'm still a newbie to cdramas and kdramas.

ok, so here are my thoughts about Till the End of the Moon:
First of all, i really enjoyed watching the drama, there were some things that i didn't like but it doesn't determine if is a good drama or not, just my personal preference.
Visuals:
Among all the xianxias i've watched, they really brought one of the best visuals and cgi. The photography and cinematography were also on point. One of the best things about the drama!
Characters:
I'm so glad i got to meet Tantai Jin, he is a complex and intriguing character played VERY WELL by Luo Yunxi, he definitely was the star of the show. The man really gave us the most unhinged, sad, pretty and mad human (or devil) being while using the most thin and neat eyeline and he's so iconic for that (he and dongfang qingcang would be besties, i feel it!)
Li Susu/Ye Xiwu are kind the kind of character that you love or hate or both, and honestly, i'm going with both. Really felt mixed emotions about her but i understand her character and why she behaved like that, Bai Lu once again did a great job <3
Also, shoutout to my favorite secondary characters Pian Ran (my beloved fox, i miss you so much), Qing yu (a cutie), Bai Yu (a puppy who loves his master so much) and my bad b*tch Si Ying (r.i.p baby you were mean but slayed).
The couples:
The main couple were not a "healthy" one and i acknowledge that but Bai Lu and Yunxi's chemistry is off chart, i'm glad we had another drama with them giving us all kinds of feels because they are really great with that. Also, if you want to watch them being one of the most funny and healthy couples of dramaland, i highly recommend Love is Sweet, it has "corporate" plot but they make it worth it.
Pian Ran and Qing Yu deserve the title of "second couple", they were fun, cute and had great chemistry (the writers did they dirty 🤬)
On the other hand, unfortunately, this drama has one of the worst "second lead" characters/couple (bingchan/mo nv and xiao lin/ji wu). I didn't like them for a bit and could erase them in any timeline/plot, very weak and with nonexistent chemistry :(
Costumes:
You can really tell that they spend efforts with the costumes and i appreciate it so much because the dresses and accessories (specially Ye Xiwu's head pieces) were stunning!! The team responsible for the costumes deserve a raise.
Plot/ending/editing:
Yes, it's a xianxia, and yes, i knew what kind of drama i was getting into and i'm not a "sad ending" hater or whatever, but i feel like the mass cutting and re-editing for the drama to be broadcasted really downgraded the overall quality of the drama.
Who directed also made a mistake choosing to release too much scenes that weren't really needed and then fast forward scenes that were important to the plot, you guys know what i'm talking about? yep, the dream arc/bo're life.
The dream arc indeed was important, specially for character development and to understand about the ancient gods and the battle against the former devil god, but how they prolonged when it could be done without taking almost 9 episodes is really frustrating.
There's a tiny detail that really bothered me while i was watching that how they used the same location/wardrobe for multiple scenes. Like, they put the actors on a place and made them record different kind of scenes that were put on the drama and you CAN tell they did that because the editing didn't help. I don't know if they did that to cut expenses but is just a thing that throws me off.
Now, about the last episode: i was meh... the ending was more bitter then sad. And, yes, i'm totally angry because Tantai Jin did not deserve the ending he got 😭🤬 like, would it kill to explain better if he was gone for good ??? because that last scene was confusing
OST:
I admit that i only heard the OST when i was watching, it was great but not memorable :(

My Favorite Movies/TV/Anime of 2023
Going into 2023 I've done a lot more taking in art then in previous years and this section is all about the audio/visual/auditory art I've taken in this year and enjoyed. In fact it's a content and clickable top 10 list! Wow so engaging, much content, please enjoy. This is gonna be inclusive of movies, cartoons, anime, TV shows, etc because I don't engage any one of these mediums alone enough to make a nice little list, at least not this year.
These are roughly in an order by how much I enjoyed them but these are different pieces of art that hit you in different places for different reasons and no one piece of art here is like "Better" than the other. Ask me at a different hour let alone day and this list could be all scrambled.
Adolescence Of Utena
So I finally watched some Utena, I mean I watched a little but of Utena before, just a few episodes with some friends but I watched the full ass movie now so that counts for something. The anime is really artful and it's a very compelling queer coming of age story with all the messy trauma and feelings attached. It's a weird movie, a girl turns into a car, and that's amazing, 12/10, another girl can also turn into a car, we're really just living the dream here. Finally true lesbian representation is when a girl can turn into a car and I am here for it. It's a really great piece of art and I am glad to have finally got to take it in and enjoy it.
Glass Onion
So this is probably the biggest surprise on the list for folks who follow me but one of my girlfriends really loves mysteries and so a Glass Onion I did watch with her. It's super funny and fun, it's just good. The cast has good chemistry, the jokes land, the mystery has fun twists, and it's just a good experience overall.
One Piece Film Red
I am not a One Piece fan, I do not care for One Piece, It's like fine Shonen. However, this movie fucking slapped, it was a good fucking time. Uta is One Pieces best character and she should show up and take over the final arc of the manga because she is so good. The music was fucking killer with Ado slaying every single fucking song and it really just hit. Every song is so good on it's own and in it's context. It's what you want from a truly killer musical experience and every song being from "the villain" is just extra fun. The power of friendship and bounds is really great here, it's just good and well animated even if the women all have the same exact body.
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once
I finally watched this movie after all the hype had died down and well, it was worth the hype, it isn't my favorite movie of all time but it's a good movie. It's funny, amazingly acted, well shot, silly and just in general a good time. It touches on a lot of good themes of family, trauma, homophobia, expectations, and parental relationships. I think the queerness coulda been better in the movie and have complaints on how that is displayed here but I mean it was at least a little bit queer and that's more than most movies. As a former actor who really loves the craft I envy everyone involved too for getting to be in such a fun film, I can only imagine what a blast it was to see the final product of what I am sure was a ton of hard work to make something so fun.
Gundam The Witch From Mercury - Season 2
Gundam ended on more of a whimper than a bang to me. Which is both not uncommon for a Gundam series to have a shitty ending but also not shocking given this series was given it had a much shorter run time. Regardless of me thinking this half of the anime is much weaker than the first half it still undeniably striking in it's animation, stunning visually, engaging to watch with a cast of very endearing characters to watch in the dramatic stakes of it all. The very end was not terrible but the time we spent to get to the final epilogue moments were questionable. Regardless, this show did not kill off Prospera, Chuchu, Secelia or Rouhi and they all were in a lot of these episodes so like an 8/10 cuz their all fucking brilliant and I really like Sulletta a ton too, I am just probably Mio's weakest solider among lesbians preferring my sweet little nervous lesbian settle down with a nice earthian girl or make use of her second hand to be polyamarous.
Kakegurui Twin
I never have and likely never will watch Kakegurui's main series but the twins series female focused cast and yuri energy captured my attention and so I turned it on. Wow, what a fucking ride. This over the top gambling game is Jojo's bizarre adventure, is sports anime, is card game anime, it's the raw spirit of these things radiating in the horny submissive lesbian factory and served back in animated form. The fucking faces these women get to make as they smugly battle in bounts of gambling is just so delicious and the tension they manage to put into each of these games of chance as the fucked up students try and cheat each other and win is just brilliant.
Harley Quinn
HarIvy is a ship of all time for me, it's hard to have the concept of a show be "HarIvy comedy" and me not to at least kinda enjoy it and I enjoyed it a lot this new season. At the start of the season I wasn't click with it, it felt weird and forced for Harly and Ivy to be placed in these really binary hero and villain roles but in the end that's what it was really about. Neither of them are traditional heroes or villains and the show actually recognized that and let them trying to fit into the strict mold of the universe as an active issue for themself, their sense of self, their relationship, the world and more. From time to time they felt fairly out of character but I am just happy to see this arcs over all themes and the work they put into that.
I’m In Love With The Villainess
While I would have rather had a tighter pace that went through the first two books of the series rather than one and some tiny jumps into the second book I'm In Love With The Villainess still managed to be one of my favorite things to watch this year with me viewing it multiple times. Rae's Isekai fantasy of being bullied by a hot rich woman and the eventual need to confront her own internalized homophobia and self pity as blocking her path to happiness are fun to see. Rae is really good in the anime adaptation and in it more than any other adaption it feels like everyone is friends and cares about each other which fits the light hearted comedy tone better than the light novels Rae will kill anyone for Clair, she has no friends mindset.
Scott Pilgrim: Takes Off
This was the biggest surprise of the year. I had grown out of Scott Pilgrim, while I was a fan of the comics before the movie was even a thing, I watched the movie before it even released, I even at some point was collecting the colored editions, I eventually soured on the series and sold everything I had of it. I wasn't excited about the anime and felt more like "let it go" then "OMG thing from when I was young" but hearing the good things I heard about it and about the Scott twist along with seeing the great animation in the OP I decided, fuck it why not give it a shot. So I did and wow, it's really good. It's a great take down, commentary, adaption, whatever it is of the original work. It is Scott Pilgrim having grown up alongside me, funnier than ever and a lot better about everything. I really loved all the changes and it still felt very true to the heart of Scott Pilgrim which is messy adults trying to fix their fucked up selves and relationships.
The Magical Revolution of the Reincarnated Princess and the Genius Young Lady
This certainly sits among my favorite anime of all time and very highly if not number one. MagiRevo mastered a light novel adaptations tempo perfecting how to make one season of what would be a nothing slow burn with no pay off at the novel and mangas pace into an exciting action packed yuri with more gay kisses in it than the rest of the years anime put together. It's funny, charming, fun but it also captures some really hard emotions too, I'll never forget the scene with Anis being pressured by old men to have children and stuff and the utter disgust she has at being treated like a piece of meat as she attempts to fill her role to the kingdom. It is devastating and heart wrenching and it just makes all the joy feel so strong.

so having read @mindmeltonabun-blog 's analysis of the plagiarism in My Demon, I felt strangely compelled to give my own review, since I have been pondering on it for quite some time now ever since I've finished it.
In short, my opinion would be, that the drama is a rather shallow, superficial, but visually stunning rendition of a popular trope that has been done a gazillion times before. It leaves a lot to the viewer's interpretation and their imagination due to the lack of proper explanation of major events in the plot. Think, an adaptation of a popular teen novel from the 2010s- short on everything but chemistry between the main actors (Fallen from 2016, The Mortal Instruments from 2013, heck even Twilight as the post stated as well and many more). The author laid out a nice blue print of a story that could have worked, had it been better researched and had she paid more attention to details. My particular problem with this drama was Gu Won's obvious identity crisis, which stems mainly from the fact that the author herself didn't really know what he was supposed to be. Like is he a demon, plucked from the many or is he the devil himself? He calls himself a demon, then then devil, he often claims that God's his boss, God herself says that she sent him there among humans, because she needed a "worker", which to me heavily implies that he's an angel..? Am I the only one who couldn't quite understand that part? And after the small discussion I had with certain commenters on Mydramalist, I guess I agree with the fact that he's supposed to be some kind of a fallen angel, mirroring the real devil, but that still doesn't explain as to why God called him "her worker". I guess, everything's part of the author's scarcely explained lore.
The Christian elements of the story, especially the Joseon Era part, were interesting (like I would totally watch a standalone drama following only that arc of the story, it's ten times more original than the main one), but totally lacked in execution and research which made a complete jumbled mess of the whole story, I did catch a few references to the Bible here and there, dunno if they were intentional or not.
Do Do Hee, to me, seemed like an even more washed out replica of Nam Ji Ah from The Tale of the Nine Tailed, mainly in how she was structured: she was strong, independent and formidable until she met her male lead and in a way she served as a feisty enigma for him to solve throughout the first few episodes, until he did and she fell flat, constantly in a need of his protection and reassurance. The "Succession" part of the show was an absolute chaos, it was obvious from the beginning who the culprit was and his tactics were honestly laughable, he wasn't terrifying at all, yet alone secretive and elusive, his whole character seemed to have escaped from a makjang if you ask me. There was no real fight, no palpable hatred and conflict between Do Do Hee and him, he spent strategically more time stroking Gu Won's magical book and chatting up the maniac he hired in sketchy chatrooms, instead of doing evil things. I would so preferred if the guy who was obsessed with Do Do Hee (for whichever reason we'll never find out btw or maybe I missed it, dunno) was the real villain instead of Noh Suk Min, he at least, evoked pure disgust and uneasiness in me, while Noh Suk Min made me laugh, literally. Oh and what a marvelous waste of Lee Sang Yi, his role was literally useless he was just there to be pretty (I love you boo <333333). Let's not forget the detectives please- they were even more useless, they just existed to be clueless about their jobs and look raggedy and lost most of the time.
The whole tone of the drama should have been different and more graphic. For a drama that deals with such heavy topics, it should've been darker, grittier, scarier, Gu Won should have been more dangerous, bolder, more seductive, sexier and more lethal, I mean he's a literal demon and given his tragic backstory he should have been truly ruthless, preying on people's misfortunes and feasting on the terrible outcome, in fact I think I would prefer for him to have been a libertine living an absolutely lavish and debauched life in the human underworld, where he would find most of his potential clients instead of the doleful theatre owner who mopes around clock towers looking for "his next victim", it just doesn't match the person he became after seeing Do Do Hee's past version dead and killing all of those people because of it (I mean Song Kang is more than a capable actor to do such a character, I wanna cry thinking what we've been deprived of seriously). For someone who boldly exclaims his hatred of people, he seems quite timid in hurting them, he should have been shown literally torturing people who didn't adhere to the contract and who wanted to escape it, instead he is just stuck in a dress up game with a plot that progresses nowhere and most of the time selectively "borrows" elements from other famous dramas. In fact the same thing could be said for Do Do Hee as well; as much as I liked most of her outfits, she was presented as this notorious business woman in episode one, but all she ever does in the rest of the episodes is just drive around town, looking like a Barbie doll.
I'm sure there were more things that irked me, but I just can't remember at the moment so I'll just stop here. The sole thing that saved this show was the chemistry between the leads.

In lights of recent reblogs, whose idea was it to have David put his head on Michael's shoulder, anyway? The photographers? Or Davids?
If it was a suggestion from the photographer (or someone else from the visual team) then what exactly was their agenda, other than making these two look even more like a married couple than they already did? Because the couple vibes radiating from these photos are immaculate and there is no way on earth that whoever directed Michael and David from behind the camera didn't know exactly what impression they were creating. There isn't a single photo from the infamous shooting that doesn't look incredibly stunning and/or just downright adorable, which is why there seems to be hardly any room for doubt about the person behind the camera low-key shipping them. You just don't create these vibes accidentally, not as a professional who's clearly amazing at their craft, since, again, the photos turned out beautiful, no matter how much annoyance there was on David's and especially on Michael's side, hiding just under the surface and coming through inbetween takes. Clearly, the people responsible picked up on their chemistry and the way it came through and could be enhanced via visuals and then proceeded to make the most of it. Having one actually cuddling up towards the other is A Choice that works as the cherry on top. And, especially when considering the clear mood Michael was in without making much of an effort to hide it, it was a bold choice as well. A choice that requires a certain amount of confidence, not only in knowing that it'll pay off with how the finished photo will look, but also in knowing that it's not a direction that'll put off the actors. It's a bit of a dare to ask them to pose like this, yet the photographer(s) did make the choice to go there. Knowing how annoyed they both were that's certaintly speaking for the chemistry they radiated and possibly also for the way the interacted with each other throughout the shoot, giving whoever was responsible the impression that it was still safe to ask this of them and get exactly the right result. You don't direct David Tennant to put his head on (grumpy) Michael Sheen's shoulder and be nice and smiley about it, without feeling safe to do so and without having a clear vision for the kind of photo that is going to come out of that pose. They clearly wanted the couple vibes and it would be fun to know if this direction of the shoot had already been established before it had even started or if it was something that developed during the actual process.
Then, as said above, there's also the second possibility of David having made the choice to cuddle up. It would certaintly be in character for him to pose like this, it's something he frequently does with people he likes, often for the purpose of pictures being taken. The pose is looking both just complicated and spontaneous enough to be very Tennant-ish. It's an impulse he seems to experience quite often, possibly because feeling safer that way in front of a camera that's trying to capture not a character but himself. Hiding behind just a bit of silliness/exaggeration, whilst being very comfortable with seeking physical contact as support. Here, the interesting aspect would be the same as above: The amount of actual trust in knowing that this is a safe thing to do that won't be off-putting. It'll delight the photographers, playing into the exact thing they are going for. More importantly, it's a natural enough thing for David to do with their dynamic, the comfort level between them is high enough, to insure that Michael will be fine with it as well. More than that, maybe, since this silly yet cute action might just be the thing to force some genuine amusement out of him. That, and some indulgence for the ridiculous situation they're in.
I absolutely love this, Anon. This is a gorgeous analysis and there is truly so much to unpack about the pictures of David with his head on Michael’s shoulder. (And hell, let’s get a visual up here again, because why not...)
The photo shoot you linked to (where the first picture is from) is still endlessly fascinating to me, especially since we know from David’s podcast how they were both just Not. Having. It. at the time. From the first moment I saw those shots, though, I also felt the couple vibes were off the charts. Like you said, it radiates off of them, not only because of the poses they’re in, but because of that connection and trust between them--a trust that I think made David feel as comfortable as he did to be that intimate with Michael, whether or not it was at the photographer’s direction.
One thing that your analysis made me think of is that in all likelihood, these photo shoots were done before the show came out, to go with the interviews that Michael and David did. It stands to reason that the issues these interviews were featured in were timed to coincide with the release of Good Omens, so the photographer most likely did not see the show ahead of time. The photographer didn’t model the shoot after the characters of Aziraphale and Crowley. The photographer took those pictures in response to the chemistry between Michael and David, and to seeing them together on the day of the shoot.
And that, to me, speaks volumes.
I would also love to know what the process was, and whether this was apparent from the start or something that gradually developed. A part of me wonders if the photographer/team initially had a more “best friends” type of vibe in mind, and maybe that’s even where the shoot started, until they really watched Michael and David together. Saw them enter each other’s spaces, the level of comfort and trust and love, and started picking that up on camera. I suspect the person behind the camera--like so many of us--didn’t even set out to start shipping Michael and David, until that chemistry smacked them right in the face.
What you said about the other possibility--that it was David who made the choice to put his head on Michael’s shoulder--is also so perfect. I’ve talked repeatedly with @thetardisisblueandroseistoo and @hurtslikeyourmouth about this, and how natural it seems for David to want to put Michael at ease. The idea of it being easier in front of a camera is so interesting, too, because it makes me think of the Oscar Wilde quote that Michael loves to say:
“Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”
I would not be at all surprised if, in the moment, David cuddled up to Michael to help relax him. That maybe David needed to feel grounded himself, but he saw Michael needed it too, and put himself out there. The giving and taking of energy between them, made possible because of their connection, and it’s the fact that it looks so natural that makes it stand out. And what better way to hide being in love than behind a bit of silliness. Indulgence, indeed...
Honestly, I could talk about these pictures forever, but you’ve said it so beautifully, Anon, that there isn’t much left for me to add. All I can say is that if this is what we got for the first season--especially given that it has continued to resonate after three years--I cannot wait to see what the photo shoots for the second season are going to be like, and what the cameras will capture. We’ll find out soon enough...

Now that lita is officially over, time for an overall review, an honest one. See, I fucking fell in love with lita, specially the characters and the actors, but I have a LOT of points to make.
Starting with the criticism. The producion. Terrible. Fucking awful. So many scenes got ruined because of it. The sound and visual team were playing around I swear, volume of conversations being too low, you could hear the mics, background music too loud, transitions from one scene to another so bad you get pulled out of the story, clothes being visible during nc scenes, scenes not making any sense whatsoever, the cuts, everything... just bad. Also whoever directed their acting, not even the actors could save some scenes because of the awkward position they got put on set.
Also obviously the wife, black giant, and spanking thing. Seriously, mame?
Talking about the characters now, I wasn't really into payurain because of all the "I'm dumb and cute" thing going on with rain, it made me uncomfortable, the couple became adorable after they got together, but both characters were a little forced to fit the powerful and smart top and the naive and dumb bottom narrative. But then prapaisky came...and I have to admit, I started this series because of them, I read their novel and their characters are so much more interesting, sky is very smart and witty (although they still made him act cute because he is younger annnd obviously because he is a bottom 🙄), prapai is super understanding and mature, the only mistake in his character in the series was how they portrayed that party scene, I feel like the one in the novel made more sense.
Going into prapaisky...there's so much to talk about them...it amazed me so much how prapai could read sky from day one and also respect him, he respected his time, his feelings and never for a second doubted him. The scene where he cries because sky can't became one of my all time favorites, and fortpeat did an amazing job portraying it, tho I still wish they showed sky crying real tears and not only sobs because it would make the difference between his previous cry scenes and this one clearer.
Now going full on compliments, and I will be commenting a lot more about fortpeat because yes they became my protected babies. Since the first time he appeared peat showed such good expressions, he brought sky to life and made him one of my favorite characters ever, when his arch started you could see clearly the change in sky's eyes, he is an actor who express so much through his eyes, the change in his gaze in prapaisky first meeting when he realized prapai wanted sex from him and then later on in the one where prapai says he wants a smile and he gets so surprised, I was STUNNED with his acting, sky is not an easy character at all, he is traumatized, he is mature and likes to pretend he is strong all the time, he helps everyone but never asks for help, he pretends to not care when he cares a lot, the way peat was able to portray the slight changes with subtle body signals, his posture, his smile, his eyes, small expressions...CHIEF KISS. Also fort...his crying scenes, his empathetic scenes, his I'm in love...so SO GOOD, the moment his arch began and he looked at sky with such curiosity and confidence I knew it was the end, he understood prapai so well and he acted while feeling it all, the scene where he comforts sky while you can see in his eyes his own heart is breaking. A FUCKING PERFORMANCE. He nailed all the whipped scenes and let's not talk about the nc ones, I am not prepared to talk about his body language during those, absolutely not. The way both had so much chemistry and the EYE CONTACT!!!!!!! The way they could communicate through their eyes so well, you could feel the love and trust, the fear, the sadness...I can't believe they are both new to this.
Of course all four actors did well, but I needed to emphasize them. Anyway, the series wasn't perfect at all, but I'm gonna miss my weather gang a lot, hope to see the actors working together again (with a better production team pls).

Now, after careful consideration, the film gears up for its final release on March 15, 2024.

MCU Rankings: Iron Man (2008)
My Original Post
TL/DR: I’m re-watching the MCU and reviewing them film by film and giving them a score based on a list of criteria, then ranking them. I’m hoping that I fall back in love with a franchise I once adored until late last year. With that out of the way, let’s get started with the movie that started it all, my personal favorite, Iron Man.
Iron Man is my favorite MCU movie. Back when I fancied the idea of doing this while providing backstories to each movie, I did a lot of research on this movie and the birth of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Like, did you know that Marvel had given away rights to so many of their famous properties (Spider-Man, X-Men, and the Fantastic Four) that they had a very small amount of notable heroes to make movies on. They gathered a bunch of kids into a room with pictures of each hero and asked who would they rather play with as a toy. To many Marvel executives’ surprise, it was Iron Man. Keep in mind this is post-Civil War where Tony...wasn’t exactly portrayed in the best light. But, toy sales. And here we are 14 years later. So, needless to say, it was a real treat to jump into this movie.
So, here are the categories I will be ranking each film on: entertainment value (how much I enjoyed the movie), story, acting/cast, Visuals/CGI, Characters, Pacing, World-Building, Humor (if applicable), Technical Aspects (cinematography, editing, costumes, etc.), Action (I mean, this is the MCU, come on), the beginning, the ending, music, and finally, execution.
One last warning: This is 100% my opinion. Movies will be ranked differently than what you would, but I would love to hear everyone’s thoughts as well.
Entertainment Value: 5/5
Like I said before, this is my favorite MCU movie. I could watch it once a week for the rest of my life and be perfectly happy. It is a fun ride from beginning to end and while it isn’t the perfect movie, it will always hold a special place in my heart.
Story: 4/5
Marvel wasn’t in the best place when they started working on this movie so they couldn’t exactly re-invent the wheel. It’s your average super-hero origin story that we have seen over and over again (although it wasn’t too overdone by 2008). I appreciated the updating in some sections, with Vietnam in the original source material being replaced with Afghanistan since America was still in the middle of the Afghanistan war (2001-2014). Tony’s arc was simple, but believable and powerful. He saw the effects of his company (and his father’s legacy) destroy the lives of innocents and promises the turn it around, first by making the Iron Man suit and then vows to use it to protect the weak.
Acting/Cast: 3.5/5
I’m gonna get some hate for this but over the years I have really grown to dislike Gwyneth Paltrow’s performance as Pepper. She and Robert Downey Jr. have very little chemistry and her acting is wooden. She just seems bored the entire time she’s on screen. So that gave this category a pretty big hit. Also, unpopular opinion, Terrence Howard is okay in this. Just okay. Maybe it’s that I’m so used to Don Cheadle’s version of Rhodey who isn’t such a stick in the mud, but he seems so severe.
Jeff Bridges made a great mentor character and an even more surprising antagonist. I remember being floored by finding out that he was behind Tony’s kidnapping. And of course, Robert Downey Jr. was amazing. He is Iron Man. You can still see in the comics today where his performance has influenced how Tony Stark is written to this day.
Plus, RDJ is apparently behind the famous “I am Iron Man” line. This movie saved his career and you can tell he gives 100% the entire time the camera is on him.
(Also, I couldn’t award too many points since he only appeared in an after-credits scene but Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury? *chef’s kiss* Perfection. He was my first introduction to Nick Fury and I can’t imagine another actor portraying him.)
Visuals: 4/5
This movie is stunning, especially considering the budget they were given...well, for 2008. It’s a bit dated now. However, you cannot argue that Tony’s suits look sleek and almost realistic.
Characters: 4/5
Again, have to deduct because Pepper just wasn’t enjoyable to me. Rhodey was okay. I loved his relationship with Tony, especially when they are reunited after Tony escaped from the Ten Rings. You can tell that Tony is his best friend something that is carried out until Tony’s death in Endgame. Stane is a wonderful villain, always keeping his cards close to his chest until the opportune moment and letting Tony underestimate him due to his history as his father’s partner and friend. Stane’s biggest mistake is underestimating people himself. He thought he could cheap out on the assassination by not telling Raza that the target was Tony Stark, which lead to Tony’s capture and the birth of Iron Man. Then, he made the biggest mistake in horror movies by leaving without making sure his opponent was actually dead, which led to Tony managing to make it down to his lab and getting the Mk I Arc Reactor and saving Pepper. Big points had to go to Tony, again because of Robert Downey Jr.’s performance. He is a lovely step up from clumsy adorkable Peter Parker from the Raimi Spider-Man movies and gruff Logan from X-Men and he’s more charming that Reed Richards of the FF duology. Tony Stark knows how to walk into a room and own it--sometimes literally. The guy has chemistry with a disembodied voice and a robot for crying out loud!
Pacing: 4/5
The pacing is good, there are some parts where it is a bit rushed and where it drags a bit but overall, it works well.
World-Building: 4/5
This was the movie that started it all and, like I said in the story section, they didn’t remake the wheel. We got introductions to several characters that will stay with us for the next ten years. My one big complaint is that it just seemed like they killed off the Ten Rings and they weren’t brought up again for 5 years (and even then the less we say about the “Mandarin” in that movie the better). We are also given an introduction to S.H.I.E.L.D (though why it took Phil Coulson an entire movie to use the acronym that they surely had to have used before then, no clue). Speaking of Phil, he was a fun original addition to the cast with Tony and Pepper constantly blowing him off only for him to come in and help save the day at the end.
Humor: 4.5/5
While some of the jokes didn’t land, most did.
Technical Aspects: 4.5/5
This movie is stunning both behind the camera and in front of it. Honestly, my one complaint is the costume department letting Gwyneth Paltrow run around that facility in high heels seven years before we gave Bryce Dallas Howard shit for it in Jurassic World.
Action: 4.5/5
The action in this movie is pretty solid, especially considering all the work they had to do with adding CGI in afterwards.
Beginning: 5/5
This is one of the most iconic opening scenes in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. I can quote it all the way until they hit the ambush. It keeps you interested all the way until it cuts back to the award ceremony and you are glued to the screen wondering how the hell Tony got into that mess to begin with since there’s no way in hell he was a soldier.
Ending: 5/5
Likewise, iconic. Extra points for “I am Iron Man”. This scene alone shows just how far Tony has come in such a short time and gave birth to the juggernaut that is the MCU.
Music: 5/5
My dad raised me on classic rock. This soundtrack hits all the best spots. As soon as “Back in Black” starts playing, I know I’m in for a good time, especially with “Iron Man” playing just as the credits begin to roll. No complaints whatsoever.
Execution: 5/5
The movie sets out to give a good origin story to Tony Stark and it does it. It’s filled with quotes I can still recite to this day with an awesome soundtrack. It even managed to make a star out of one of Marvel’s most disliked B-Listers and saved RDJ’s career.
Bonus: Stan Lee Cameo: 4/5 It made me chuckle.
Overall Score: 4.4/5

To an outsider, hearing that a rookie would be working with the top male performer in the industry sounds like a dream, a once in a lifetime deal that not a single soul would pass up. The kind of opportunity that comes once in a lifetime merely by luck. It all sounds perfect. This could potentially be the breakout moment that every newbie wishes for while they’re daydreaming with starry and distant eyes paired with a loopy smile plastered across their lips— clocked in at their day job. It makes sense, it does. So with that being said, you can’t blame anyone who would draw this conclusion from the given circumstances without a deeper context. On paper, you should’ve been over the moon with excitement and joy when your manager gave you the news, but in reality that wasn’t the case. Not in the slightest.
You were an adult actress, a pornstar if you will. The kinds of scenes you did never varied from softcore. In other words, your résumé had things like stripteases, lingerie modeling, and simulated sex. You liked to think of it as a very taboo form of art. “Yes, (Name). This is really big for you!” Yelena exclaimed through the phone, hearing the excitement color her tone.
“I know but,” You sighed, twisting the top back on the white nail polish. “I think I might be having second thoughts..” You finished. The silence on the other end was louder than you would’ve liked.
“Is it because you’re venturing outside of your realm or the rumors?” She asks, earning her own silence from your line. You chewed on your bottom lip anxiously, not particularly looking at something but rather lost in thought as you looked off into the short distance in front of you. Yelena could hear the soft music in the background coming from what she assumed to be either an Alexa or a stereo in your room.
“..Both. This is all so overwhelming and happening too quickly.” You admit.
“I understand. I do, but Yeager’s agency specifically reached out to you when they saw your tweet. This isn’t something that just happens.” Yelena says.
Oh, right. Your tweet. A couple days beforehand you asked your followers who they would be interested in seeing you work with. You specified that it didn’t mind what genre, that they could go crazy— basically admitting that you were thinking about moving beyond softcore porn.
You got so many responses. Some varied from popular wlw actresses like Pieck and Hitch, to indie actors like Connie and Hange, to top tier actors with big names like Reiner Braun and Levi Ackerman. It was quite the melting pot, but however, there was an overwhelming response asking for one one man in particular.

Do you have any theories/thoughts on why Semantic Error is blowing up so much and crossing into the mainstream? Don't get me wrong I am a huge fan, but I am a little surprised about stuff like the Elle photo spread, the DKZ presale numbers and the "average Korean YouTube reaction channels" reacting to it.
Also, do you think it will have a positive influence on future productions or was it just a one time fluke?

Why is Semantic Error so popular?
It really is that good. Look, I have loved me some Korean BL, it has gotten the most 10/10 ratings out of me - Color Rush, Light On Me, and To My Star - but they're all flawed. CR had faulty chemistry, LOM had a difficult love triangle (and is high school set, almost always less popular than university), and TMS has a very wonky story arc (story, what story?).
Korea hit it entirely out of the Parks with Semantic Error by doing a university set BL featuring everything we expect from BL just done exactly right. It has Korea's signature quality executed perfectly, and added bonus good story, great pacing, stunning visuals, and fantastic chemistry. You cannot ask for more from a BL, let alone a KBL.
It is basically flawless. The attention to detail in this show was mind numbing. Their continuity supervisor should win MAD awards.
ALSO
Enemies to lovers is one of the most popular romance tropes. And let’s be fair, these two actors are hypnotically beautiful both individually and together. Finally, they kissed well. Like actually kissed. In a Korean drama.
That said, plenty of flawless shows over the years haven’t taken off.
So the next question is, why now?
Not only are Kdramas but BL in general is still on the up swing. More and more new fans are being added every day. It’s constantly being discovered.
A lot of those new fans are coming to BL via Kpop. As Korea casts more and more idols, KBL gets consistently new fans. Fans who specifically LIKE Korea’s clear precision style and attention to PRETTY. Because it’s the same style and approach they take with forming Kpop groups and filming Kpop MVs.
I don’t know Viki’s true numbers, but I can take an educated guess that they at least doubled their subscriber base over the last year, possibly tripled. Hosting Kingdom, iLand and now Queendom has pulled in a LOT of Kpop stans and there’s huge BL crossover in this demographic, so a lot of them are moving into Kdramas and KBL. Initially many were following idols but now they’re delving fully into BL
In this instance we are also helped by Viki’s “Top 10″ algorithm which, unlike Netflix’s, is not filtered by user preferences. It literally just shows the Top 10 most watched stuff on the site. These days there’s always some BL in there. The more BL content Viki acquires, and the more BL fans are subscribers, the more BL shows in Top 10. Especially as BL watchers tend to be chronic rewatchers and last time I assessed it Viki’s count was based on runtime eyeballs, with no filter on IP/user. (Which means they don’t eliminate rewatches like YouTube does.) Semantic Error is still sitting there. Which means people are still recommending it and still rewatching it.
Korea is now onboarding a new wave of fans, after Thailand brought in the first wave.
There’s about to be a bifurcated BL fandom. This is inevitable. There’s now too much content for anyone but the obsessives to keep track of and try to watch everything, so we will start to get BL camps: people who are fans of one country’s BL style more than another. I think the first tribalism will be around Thai BL vs Korean BL. In fact it’s already happening.
This is not a weakness, this is human nature.

My Top 10 Favorite Bl Shows
I'm new to Thai Bl, started in November 2021 but in my eyes, these are SOME of the jewels of Bl. I'm open to new ones, lemme know in the comments 👇
These are ranked by visual, chemistry, plot and acting. Ready, let's go! Warning: some spoilers!
10. Hello Stranger
This isn't my first Filipino Bl, I watched My day before and thought it was good, but damn did Hello Stranger surprise me. Filmed during the pandemic and on an online setting, it really made it different. The actors were so good and I'm glad it was a slow burn. I recommend for newbies.
9. Papa and Daddy
This show was so cute, I think I smiled through the entire show. It's basically a show about two dads and their son. The actors had great chemistry and the topics of discussion were new and fun. I highly suggest watching it but be warned, it's ending was too dramatic. Those who know, know.
8. You make me Dance
I like anything that carries a soul mate plot lol. But honestly, Korean Bl can go toe to toe with Thai Bl and even portray some healthy, cute and beautiful relationships, like the one in you make me dance. I live for the dance visuals, made me so relaxed.
7. Lovely Writer
Yooo, this was a nice twist to the regular Thai Bl settings, it was really interesting to watch them bash Bl drama stereotypes and include 👌consent😩 like ugh well done. There were some beautiful scenes and I laughed a lot. As a writer, I highly recommend it, even for newbies, check it out on YouTube.
6. Tale of 1000 Stars
This would be number 1 just because I love EarthMix, lol their friendship makes me believe in love and I wouldn't be surprised if they were together. Anyway, this was the 3rd Bl I watched. The THIRD, I CAN'T EVEN BELIEVE IT. I watched it on YouTube of course and I fxcking loved it. Not only does it temporarily get rid of the regular School and Engineering setting, but the visuals. I Repeat, THE VISUALS. not to mention the soundtrack is added to my daily life. I know a lot of people are frustrated about the ending, but I loved it to be honest and can't wait to see what they do when there's a season two.
5. Bad Buddy
The visuals, the chemistry, the soundtrack, the love. I smiled all through this ENTIRE show. I'll definitely be rewatching it, cause they are a comfort ship, perfect for those looking to start Bl, but be prepared to have high standards afterwards. Only green flags for Pat and Pran.
4. Not Me
👁👄👁 bitch off gun are the main characters, of course it's gonna be lit. and I'd put this in the top 3 but I gotta put me first 😭 so the messages and the cinematography in this series are INCREDIBLE. THE ACTING, LIKE WTF GUN. I LOVE BLACK. like the switch between each twin is stunning, I'm still shook. I love the seriousness and the topics they focused on in this series, not to mention the action scenes. If you're looking for something different and empowering, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND.

•CutiePie- bish this shit slaps. Yooo, that kiss, the soundtrack, the Visuals, this would be in the list, but the entire series hasn't finished airing. Did I mention the ACTORS AND THE CHEMISTRY?!
• 2gether and Still 2gether- I liked it, have a lot of Srubb songs now, but I didn't connect with the actors a lot. Bright and Win are good actors, but please don't hate me, they didn't have great chemistry, it was good, but not great. I enjoyed the slow burn tho and it was fun to watch. I recommend to newbies, check it out on YouTube.
•Tharntype- my first Bl and I think a lot of y'all too. I love MewGulf, they are Kings, but if this was made now, I think it would have been better and probably darker. I like Type and Tharn's chemistry, but they seriously need to communicate and probably see and therapist. Not to mention Lhong, like damn, that was a twist. But it's in the Mentions cause of the amazing soundtrack, visuals, acting and chemistry.
•Theory of Love- I didn't finish this. I got tired of Third crying and Kai, can't remember his name, was a HUGE red flag.
•KinnPorsch - now airing and I haven't even watched the first episode but it's in this list cause of that fucking trailer- NO SPOILERS HOES, I'M WAITING TILL MY BIRTHDAY (29TH)TO WATCH

3. Sotus and Sotus S
Here me out. I watched this like a few weeks ago and damn. I loved it, lmao, I would love to see Kongpob and Sarawat (2gether) go toe to toe in a flirting compilation. This show was perfect, it didn't need a lot smexy scenes and I really loved the portrayal of the characters. I'm biased I guess, cause Arthit is a lot like me in my relationship. I'm not the most blatant (even as a straight girl), I like my space and I'm very awkward. Later on the show deals with life and I the visuals are my favorite too, even if the show is like 4 years old I think.
2. Manner of Death
Bitch, you thought I'd forget the literal Kings of BL. Maxtul run this shit. Together with me want my second Bl, lol I know right. I still crack up over the "you be tripping" and the chemistry between maxtul both kills me and makes my ovaries burst. Then I found Manner of death. Bitch, biiiiiiiiitch. This show was everything I needed and would be number one. The plot, the acting, Inspector M' ass, the LOVE. I'm shook. Watch it on YouTube if you want. It's worth it.
1. Until We Meet Again
Well, you should have known, I did say I love a good soulmate story. But honest to God, I sobbed maybe 50% of the show. I watched it like two weeks ago and now I use the soundtrack to write. Guys, guys, this show broke me. I've watched a lot of shows and read a bunch of books in my young life, but I loved, LOVED this show. I started the first episode and was, wtf am I doing here, then convinced myself to watch it, even though I know how it would end. The actors, oml THE ACTING. I know ppl say Fluke cries too much, but have y'all seen Theory of Love, any who, the Visuals were amazing in this show too, holds up well with 1000 stars and Not Me. I live the plot and the deep issues in the storytelling, it was everything that hurt me, but I would definitely watch it again cause damn. And the soundtrack, yooo the soundtrack.

2020 End of Year Post - cdrama edition
This is only going to cover cdramas that aired in 2020; if I had to make a post about all the cdramas I watched this year, I would still be doing it in three months...
Overall it’s been a fairly decent cdrama year (certainly better than the very lacklustre kdrama year.) It’s no miracle that 2019 was (so many excellent dramas!) but overall pretty solid.
DRAMAS WATCHED
(In order of liking from least to most as opposed to pure quality; I am including if I’ve seen enough to make up my mind; yes I realize that’s inaccurate, but that’s my list)
44 The Legend of Jing Yan - the worst cdrama I have seen this year, and possibly the worst drama of 2020, period. The hero and heroine were both uncharismatic, incapable of acting and saddled with such shrilly moronic characters, the only suspense was how they haven’t both perished long since from forgetting to breathe. Nor was anyone in the rest of the cast much better; the screenplay was written by a lower mammal and the cinematography was the best a third-rate wedding cinematographer could offer. Stay the HELL away from this one.
43 Unicorn Girl - the only unicorn about this bland yet irritating piece of pap was the fact that I was supposed to believe the leads are hockey players.
42 Autumn Cicada - I like spy stories, Allen Ren, and Republican Era settings. I can tune out Communist propaganda with the best of them. Yet, the propaganda ate the story to such a degree that there was nothing left; pre magic change Pinocchio was less wooden then this narrative.
41 You Complete Me - no you do not.
40 Skate into Love - the only positive thing I can say about this is that at least it’s better than Unicorn Girl, if for no other reason that only one of them is supposed to be a hockey player.
39 Irreplaceable Love - how do you make a story about fake siblings with a mad mother falling for each other boring? I don’t know, ask the makers of this.
38 Eternal Love Rain - I hate to rain on their parade, but these two actors cannot act, have about as much chemistry as a piece of bread, and are trapped in a story perfect for entertaining the mental abilities of the leads of Jin Yan.
37 For Married Doctoress - ummmm, you could do worse I guess. It only made me break out in mild hives. The sadistic ending did make me laugh though.
36 Dance of the Sky Empire - why you get Xu Kai and waste him in this insipid mess of a story is beyond me.
35 Love Designer - it’s inoffensive except to my sense of entertainment. There is nothing wrong with it but oh God is it bland.
34 Love a Lifetime - It felt like a lifetime watching this, but I didn’t love it. The story is incoherent, the actors have no chemistry and it’s all an epic waste of time.
33 Love is Sweet - so sweet it gave me diabetes. I like Luo Yunxi and Bai Lu, but there is literally no plot. I don’t need to sink into a plotless morass to watch pretty people engage in PG-rated make-outs. I am an adult with access to stronger stuff if I am thus inclined, though to be fair they could get x-rated and I still wouldn’t be able to sit through so many episodes of plotlessness for that.
32 Fake Princess - I love Zhao Yi Qin, but the guy needs to pick better projects. The female lead in this one has the voice and personality that can strip paint but the story is also doing nobody any favors.
31 The Changan Youth - I lost my brain checking this out. I had to go and read a dense treatise on medieval coinage or Mayan farming to try to recover it.
30 My Dear Destiny - kinda cheesy fun. It honestly shouldn’t be as low except it really feels like community theater.
29 Handsome Siblings - why is the Nic Tse version so good and this one so bad? True mystery for the ages. Chen Zhe Yuan is the sole reason this isn’t lower, because that kid tries SO HARD to make this drama bearable and almost succeeds. I can’t wait to see him in Sha Po Lang which actually will give him something to do.
28 In a Class of Her Own - see my comment on The Changan Youth. But at least Song Weilong is gorgeous to look at.
27 General’s Lady - inoffensive, pretty and so utterly pointless.
26 The Blooms at Ruyi Pavilion - those two leading actors are a no go to me but at least they considerately acted with each other instead of ruining two dramas for me. It’s very pretty though.
25 Jiu Liu Overlord - it’s a mess and I bailed, but I placed it this high merely due to the fact that Lai Yi finally gets a leading role and he’s sexy as fuck and I am shallow. Whoever styled Bai Lu should never work again except at a circus, however.
24 Cross Fire - not my genre and Luhan will always look too much like my cousin for comfort, but it’s a surprisingly gripping and dark drama. I liked it!
23 God of Lost Fantasy - if you want to watch a mediocre wuxia/xianxia, this is not a bad choice. Probably better than Legend of Fei actually, because at least it doesn’t have an A-list cast to waste and gives us Sheng Yilun himbo and shirtless.
22 Renascence - the insane cuts (it went from 70 eps to 36!!!) made a fairly cheesy story into a total mess. But I had a good time until I finally bailed mainly because of the male lead (Chen Zhe Yuan yet again carrying a not-good 2020 drama on his shoulders; the guy should be nicknamed Atlas) and the insane but in a fun way story. The female lead (both the character and the actress) were not up to par but oh well.
21 Legend of Fei - only this high because objectively there is nothing I disliked it. But there is nothing I liked either. The most uninspired drama on the list. If you could eat cardboard, this is what it would taste like.
20 Ever Night 2 - compared to EN1, it’s a waste of film. On its own merits, it’s not very good (the cast replacements are uniformly inferior and Dylan Wang is so wrong for Ning Que I cannot even put it into words; the script is useless.) But it had some parts I loved so very VERY much (all the shippy stuff was perfection) so I don’t feel too bitter.
19 Castle in the Sky 2 - a lovely if not too complex fairy tale. It is inferior to its prequel because it doesn’t have Zhang Ruo Yun who elevated it, but it’s still a solid bit of fun.
18 The Great Ruler - it’s very high fantasy, very pretty, and surprisingly involving.
17 (tie) Legend of Two Sisters in the Chaos - the secondary couple steals the show but the rest is not too bad if not too involving.
17 Legend of Awakening - a solid bit of fun with a seriously BDSM streak (theme this year apparently - but come on, the lead’s powers only activate when he’s in extreme pain!) It’s a bit generic and the costuming is done by a blind person, not to mention the OTP is a NOTP, but the rest of relationships (romantic and platonic) are wonderful (I live for the found siblings story in this one) and I like most of the characters.
16 Consummation - a rare modern cdrama I liked; a sweet coming of age story (and love story) even if wrapped in a pretty weird virtual reality concept.
15 Oops the King is in Love - this is how you do a low budget, sweet, silly piece of fluff. Our heroine pretends to be a eunuch and crosses paths with a powerless young king and they are adorable, even more so than the drama.
14 Song of Glory - pretty solid, though draggy and I didn’t love the toothpaste filter. But A+ cast, excellent leading couple chemistry, Li Qin being a BAMF and a leading man (Qin Hao) who is actually an adult.
13 And the Winner is love - objectively kind of a mess (and the heroine has the brainpower of a gnat), but the OTP chemistry is excellent and Luo Yunxi fighting and flirting with a fan as finally a leading man is worth the price of admission.
12 Miss S - snazzy and snappy and stylish and whatever else starts with S.
11 Eternal Love of Dream - I don’t know if it would work for you as well if you weren’t a hardcore shipper for this OTP in Three Lives but I was and this was such a darling, wonderful, shippy delight; plus I love this type of high fantasy.
10 (tie) Maiden Holmes - solid and sweet and a wonderful OTP. Proves that functional doesn’t have to mean boring. If you watch one cross-dressing drama this year make it this one.
10 Qin Dynasty Epic - srs bsns history epic. I am not far into it but it’s so good and smart and visually stunning (if you love battles, this one is for you.)
9 Love Lasts Two Minds - I adored this so much more than I should objectively have, but it’s so beautiful (and no I am not just referring to Alan Yu’s face) and the OTP has wonderful chemistry and the story is solid, and the whole trope of her memory being wiped but falling for him all over again while he’s constantly and utterly devoted is a fave; plus he’s in pain and semi-dyng for most of it so sluuuurp (happy ending, don’t worry)
8 To Love - yes, a modern drama is this high! But it involves intensity, tragedy, genuine adults and sexiness that is Lin Gengxin. And there is an actual plot and darkness OMG!
7 Legend of Xiao Chuo - so beautiful, so fun, so full of gorgeousness of Shawn Dou. Plus, Liao is a rare setting for a cdrama and there are a lot of characters and stories I liked a LOT. Less ship content than I wanted but more than I expected.
6 The Romance of Tiger and Rose - so so delightful. I was literally laughing out loud. I have no idea if it will work as well if one isn’t a seasoned watcher of period cdrama/reader of web novels, with bonus for watching/reading Goodbye My Princess, but it was a complete delight for me (and yes, I shipped for real, as well. Best of both worlds.)
5 Twisted Fate of Love - Jin Han gets a leading period drama role! And he’s enjoying it to the hilt, excellent as a smart, twisty bastard who is also charming and so madly in love with heroine. Sun Yi is beautiful and tough and her chemistry with JH is on fire, the story never drags, and it’s so twisty and fun and just awesome.
4 Love In Between - the most underrated drama on this list. It has no big names or big budget, but it’s wuxia that’s clever, driven, tragic, hopeful and so beautifully shot. Three separate (amazing) OTPs, a leading man who is so not typical (a doctor who cannot fight and who never acquires this ability) and who is intense and smart and damaged, a heroine who puts her quest ahead of her emotions, an unhealthy degree of involvement by yours truly. This is a drama Fei should have been.
3 Love and Redemption - such a lovely, addictive, utterly romantic fairy tale. I was obsessed with it for a reason. All the tropes you love and some you didn’t know you did, a star-crossed OTP to the nth power (and a secondary OTP I hardcore love), a twisty yet coherent plot, some insane chemistry and so much whump and hurt/comfort they must have bought blood packets in bulk.
2 Go Ahead - yes, I can’t believe it either. A contemporary slice of life cdrama made it this high on my list. But the way it feels so real, the found family perfection, the characters I love and loathe, the perfect cherry of a wonderful OTP that hits my narrative kinks on top, and just a perfect storm of loveliness all around with this one.
1 The Wolf - is that any surprise to anyone who’s checked out this tumblr for the last couple of months? Tragic, intense and gorgeous; so romantic and angsty and passionate it made me lose my mind (though some of it was gone the moment the camera panned to Darren Wang) - all my favorite tropes and then some; this is a drama that may not be perfect but it is 100% and then beyond perfect for ME.
FAVORITE DRAMA
The Wolf - I have seen objectively better cdramas; even this year. But it has been literal years since I have been this hardcore obsessed, this utterly pleased, this emotionally catered to and devastated at once. A beautiful dark fairy tale that manages to own me despite the storytelling gaps due to censorship, it took me for one of the biggest emotional roller coaster rides of my drama watching career. Visually gorgeous, poetic, intense, and so romantic it took my breath away, this is not just my favorite cdrama of 2020, it’s my favorite drama this year period, and the one cdrama this year to make it into my permanent Top 10 cdramas list.
WORST DRAMA
Legend of Jin Yan - see my write up for it for why as I refuse to waste more time on this stupid mess.
FAVORITE MALE CHARACTER
Wolfie, The Wolf - he is such a haunted, tormented, complex, dark mess; loving and violent, severely damaged and with a hidden yearning softness, longing and aloof. And the amount of charisma and sheer masculine sex appeal Darren Wang brings to the role is insane and not something I see much of in a cdrama. Plus, that character arc with its rapid fall and slow painful redemption is A++++
Runner Up: Sifeng, Love and Redemption - has a male lead ever loved more utterly and selflessly, suffered more thoroughly and beautifully, and managed to have such chemistry with both his leading lady and his leading man (that his leading lady temporarily turned into) at once? The answer is no.
Almost made the cut - Feng Xi, Twisted Fate of Love, Han Shuo, The Romance of Tiger and Rose, Qing Ci, Love in Between.
FAVORITE FEMALE CHARACTER
Xiao Qian, The Romance of Tiger and Rose - so funny, so much the reason this drama was such a delight. I adore her beyond words.
NEEDS TO BE MURDERED
Murder Daddy, The Wolf - I am sad the censors robbed us of seeing him die on screen. He was fully human but nonetheless managed to be the worst monster in a drama full of literal ones.
Ling Xiao’s Mom, Go Ahead - I hate her so much I don’t want to look up her name. She abused the kid, the disappeared and came back to abuse him some more. I mean she literally gave her child mental health issues. She is the WORST.
FAVORITE SHIP
Xing’er x Wolfie, The Wolf - are you kidding me? Who else could it ever be for me? They destroyed each other and saved each other, sworn enemies and childhood lovers, soulmates and epic messes, they couldn’t live with or without each other. The longing, the passion, the intensity, the angst, the epicness. LIKE THERE ARE NO WORDS!!!!
FAVORITE SECONDARY OTP
Si Yuan, Shen Manqing, Love in Between - I loved them as much and often more than the main OTP. So much angst and passion and a happy ending! She is a seeming sect darling (except the sect is horrible and also sexist so her only worth is as a marriage candidate) and he’s an information broker who is actually one of the members of a destroyed sect that’s blamed for the massacre of her family. That chemistry and yearning is insane. The scene where she touches his face when he’s unconscious was in serious running for my favorite scene of 2020.
NOTP
Legend of Awakening - I have never seen a couple that didn’t just have no chemistry but exhibited actual revulsion towards each other before watching Chen Feiyu and Cheng Xiao try to act as lovers in this one. It was almost entertaining to be honest.
FAVORITE SCENE
It’s a tie and both are from The Wolf. One is a sequence where Wolfie marches to the walls alone, seeking death at Xing’er’s hands and the whole sequence with the battle and rescue follows. The other is the intercut between Xing’er going to her wedding and Wolfie going to his execution, and the auto-da-fe being intercut with her wedding.
BIGGEST CRUSH
Wolfie, The Wolf - Ummm have you seen this tumblr lately, it’s basically a drool shrine to the man.
BEST SCENE STEALER CHARACTER
Yelü Yansage, The Legend of Xiao Chuo - I have loved this actor since The Myth and he continued to competently steal every scene he was in.
NEEDS A SEQUEL
To Love - come out of the coma, dammit!!!!!!!
NEEDS A DIRECTOR’S CUT
The Wolf - duh. It started out as 59 eps and got cut to 49. I reaiize some stuff is never gonna get put in due to censorship, but some of the stuff that got cut got for time reasons because they were deluded and hoping to get a TV broadcast so ep count had to be under 50. I mean I doubt the censors would care if they kept scenes of Wolfie building her a swing or whatever. I really really want a director’s cut the way Goodbye My Princess did even if like with GMP it’s only three extra eps. Hell, I will take extra three minutes, as long as those three minutes are Darren Wang shirtless or with a sword. Ahem.
NEEDS SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
The Song of Glory - it’s a fairly solid drama but honestly it didn’t need to be as long as it was and kind of got draggy and I got lost interest. (I could have gotten snarky and said all the dramas I didn’t like needed scissors taken to them in their entirety but decided to play nice.)
TOO MANY SCISSORS TAKEN TO IT
There are a number of dramas I could complain about with regard to this (hi there, darling The Wolf!) but this award goes to Renascence - poor Renascence was never going to be a masterpiece, but it had the potential to be a bit of good cheesy fun until it had its run time cut by more than half and became an incoherent piece of insanity.
TROPE THAT NEEDS TO DIE
Dumb shrill innocent heroine who can’t tie her shoes - see basically all the cdramas I didn’t like this year.
FAVORITE TROPE WE’VE SEEN A LOT OF
Male lead torture - I mean it’s always open season on that in cdramas, but between Love and Redemption, The Wolf, Love Lasts Two Minds, Love in Between and so on, it was a banner year!
BIGGEST DISAPPOINTMENT
Legend of Fei - what a waste of that cast; what a waste of our finite time on this Earth. What a waste of my intelligence to hope for something better and stick with it for a dozen eps. I have had stale wonderbread that had more personality than this drama.There is absolutely nothing that stands out about this drama in any way, from half-dimensional characters, to actors who are sleepwalking, to a plot that moves at the speed of an arthritic snail, to uninspired cinematography and direction, to lack of any chemistry between anyone in the cast. If paint-by-numbers was done by a group of particularly linear robots, it might come across the same way as this drama.
BIGGEST GOOD SURPRISE
The Wolf - honestly, I did not expect it to come out AT ALL EVER let alone to become my favorite drama of 2020. I was not familiar with the leading man (hahah), I liked Li Qin but wasn’t yet obsessed with her, and Xiao Zhan was excellent in The Untamed but I was hardly going to follow him from drama to drama (and I don’t do SLS any way.) And the trailer was enjoyable but unlike seemingly everyone, I didn’t think it was going to be some epic masterpiece. And then it came out and while it wasn’t objectively an epic masterpiece, it pulled out all the favorite tropes, shippy and narrative kinks from the deepest darkest recesses of my id. And I fell harder than I have in years.
2020 DRAMAS I HAVEN’T SEEN THAT I MOST WANT TO WATCH
None. Covid Year gave me PLENTY of time
BEST NON-2020 DRAMA I’VE WATCHED IN 2020
Novoland Eagle Flag and Joy of Life - they are in my Top 10 dramas from anywhere now. They are quite different except being smart and giving me protagonists to obsess over.
ETA: Also The Untamed because @idlewilds3 pointed out I actually watched it in 2020 even though I didn’t think so because this hellyear has lasted about three decades.
MOST ANTICIPATED IN 2021
I am gonna limit it to dozen and leaving out ones that aren’t necesarily supposed to air next year (Joy of Life 2, Love in Flames of War, Novoland Princess from Plateau.)

I just finished Shadow and Bone, and I was genuinely curious, from one multishipper to another, who have you found yourself shipping in this show?

As of the canon ships, I only really found myself attached to one and that's Aleksander/Alina, holy shit the chemistry and softness between them, the way their actors sell it, this ship is raw. I adore it.
At which point my multishipper nature comes through because nearly all of my other ships are Alina-centric too. xD
I LOVE Alina/Inej, holy shit. The way their dynamic evolved from the mere saint/worshipper to the dagger exchange and something far more... human than the worship, but still with that adoration in mind? Damn.
Also Genya/Alina though, those two in the Little Palace were so cute with each other, so soft, so very touchy, that's hard not to ship honestly.
Still on the fence about Zoya/Alina, visually it's stunning but Zoya's start in this show - especially with the racist comment toward Alina - really didn't make me like her much, but then she had that incredibly sudden change of heart in the finale and not gonna lie the "I saved your life and am grateful to you but also I still don't like you" dynamic is very charming at times, so I'm curious to see how their relationship progresses in season 2, but from all I've seen from how much book readers seem to love Zoya, I am expecting quite a change and growth there so I think is is something that's gonna get me really on board too.
My only not-Alina-ship is Kaz/Jesper and they're just yes. I love Jesper's cheekiness and the contrast with Kaz's absolute authority and the dynamic and trust between them. It is highly appealing.
So, this show puts me in a real pickle because yeah sure I usually end up multishipping, I... usually also have... other ships. Like, so here Chara A is with B, but hey I also like C with F so that's happening at the side here during this. And I just... don't really have that for this fandom?
I guess David/Genya could be cute, but there was just way too little of them for me to go by, it was another one of these expected heteronormative things. Which this show did a lot. Outside of Aleksander and Alina, they really relied heavily on the expected heteronormativity. Look at them, they looked at each other. Ship it pls. No, you... you, as the writer, have to put the work in there and show me what or why. I hope season 2 gives me more about their dynamic.
But I don't have any other Inej ship, or Aleksander ship (though the latter, I don't think there will be).
I generally hope that season 2 gives me more dynamics and more ship-possibilities. I've seen people in the fandom hype the Zoya-Inej interaction up so I dunno if that is something that's deeper explored in the books and might be more in season 2 and if that's something I could ship. I guess that'd have potential.
And then there is Nadia, who from what I gather has a canon girlfriend in the books, so I hope she will get... more screentime... and said girlfriend in season 2.
Oh, also Mal/Zoya, I think that can work, I did like their flirting in episode 1 and if they reunite again, that could be a ship to go to.

I just watched an early In The Heights screening! Here’s an in-depth, mostly non-spoilery review for anyone interested
To sum it all up: I have a feeling this movie will be divisive among fans but in my personal opinion, this film is absolutely gorgeous and one of my new favorite movies. It captures the spirit of the original production perfectly while also being a COMPLETELY different beast. I’ll split my thoughts up into 4 sections: Story, Cast, Music, and Visuals. I will avoid spoilers as much as possible simply because this really is something that should be watched fairly blind.
Story: The way they tell the story here is SO different from the original musical that I’d go as far as to say that it’s more a remake than an adaptation. Entire plot lines are removed, characters have different motivations for certain actions, and specific plot points are sorta shuffled around. But in the end, a lot of the changes were needed to shift from stage to film. By far my favorite change was the ending: I personally always thought the original ending felt rushed and abrupt, but they really take their time here and everything feels so much more cohesive while still maintaining the old ending’s infectious joy and message. I’m certain that there will be people who will just hate this movie because so much has been altered and that’s perfectly fine as long as you don’t expect it to be a copy of the original musical.
Cast: Everyone is well cast here. I’m so insanely glad Jon M Chu prioritized talent over famous names, because the actors really shined in their roles. I loved everyone but specific highlights were totally Anthony Ramos as Usnavi, Olga Merediz as Abuela (of course), and Daphne Rubin-Vega as Daniela. Corey Hawkins‘ Benny and Leslie Grace’s Nina had really good chemistry as well. The one person I admittedly wasn’t a super huge fan of was Melissa Barrera as Vanessa just because she never seemed to have that much energy, but I‘m sure I’ll warm up to her when I watch the film again. Also a Hadestown actor has a tiny role here and and I may have squealed
Music: Don’t watch the movie thinking two or three songs have been cut, because I can assure you the number is bigger than that. However, I think some of us forget just how music heavy the original production was, and there are still a TON of songs in this movie that I think any more would have caused casual audiences to be taken off-guard by the sheer amount of singing. It is also worth mentioning that the song order has been heavily changed to fit the movie’s new plot structure, so don’t panic right away if a song appears to be missing cuz it might just appear later. There is one song in particular that has been HEAVILY altered and I KNOW that people will be mad at the new version, but there’s a little twist added to the moment that just completely recontextalizes everything and I believe that it more than makes up for the somewhat disappointing lyric changes.
Visuals: Damn Jon. You really outdid yourself here. The film has SUCH a distinct visual style and it is not afraid to be straight up cheesy or weird. Amidst all the cool camera work, fantastical cgi, and gorgeous shots, I couldn’t have asked for a better way to adapt these songs. There are three songs in particular that I cannot wait to watch again:
- When You’re Home: the choreography is insanely cute and fun
- Paciencia Y Fe: my god this was stunning
- Champagne: this was the most mundane song in the entire film but it utilizes a neat camera technique that made it really stand out.
Was the movie perfect? No, there were definitely flaws here and there. Three that stuck out to me were the obvious voice-overs in some songs, weird cuts to the Rosario storyline, and the fact that Daniela and Carla’s interactions were safe enough that you could easily mistake them as really close friends rather than in an explicit lesbian relationship like Lin said they’d be. The most they ever did was slow dance together, so that kinda annoyed me. But for the most part, I felt this movie was just incredible and completely worth the wait, and I am incredibly eager to see all y’all’s reactions when it official comes out. Feel free to ask further questions, though I’ll definitely be avoiding spoilery talk.
