oh! this was a delightful surprise. I just updated my intro post today (well, yesterday as of posting this), and I didn't think anyone would notice haha. thank you for reading it ^_^

I absolutely love both Ninjago and Romeo & Juliet, and honestly it's nice to have an excuse to talk about them on my blog. however, since you asked specifically about favorite characters, this will inevitably be a long one. I can never get myself to shut up about characters.

my favorite Ninjago characters are Nya and Jay (and honorary mention Kai). my favorite Romeo & Juliet characters are probably Mercutio and Benvolio (but I could make a good reason for any of them to be the best haha). very long rant under cut

so! let's start with Nya. first, I have to point out that she was horribly mistreated in canon. it was sort of inevitable- since she was "the girl," I feel like the creators felt like a lot of her arc had to be... being the girl? I'm just still a bit disappointed at her missed potential of just, y'know, being a ninja.

that being said, she's a flipping icon and I love her with all of my heart, and every time she's on the screen it makes me smile. granted, I totally project onto her (and her brother, our favorite Kai~), but even if you ignore my personal headcanons of her being aromantic and loveless, she's such a smart, stubborn, and creative character, and I love that for her.

also Jay. I love Jay. I feel like, as a fanfic writer, I treat him the exact opposite of how I treat Nya. every time I write about Nya, I write about her experiences with being aromantic, or her desperation to prove herself, things like that. when I write about Jay, it's like Jay's in love with Cole, or Jay's in love with Nya (actually unrequited love my beloved), or Jay's in love with Kai. (side note- I actually headcanon Kai as aromantic, too, but sometimes I put that headcanon on pause so I can ship him. because oh my god he has such cute ships.) anyway all this to say that Jay's an adorable goofy little guy and I like putting him in situations. (he also has massive angst potential but angst isn't really my forte.)

ok. Romeo & Juliet. before I get into specifics, I must say that the characterization in this play is criminally underrated. if it were released today, it would have leagues of fans obsessing over both Romeo and Juliet, and arguing over whether Romeo is a romantic or just an idiot, and getting into shipping wars (especially Benvolio/Mercutio vs Tybalt/Mercutio- though Bencutio is obviously superior). the fact that it only has 2000 fics on AO3 is a tragedy to rival, well, Romeo & Juliet.

(also- for my WttT followers and moots, if any of you have gotten this far, I have to say that we have very nearly surpassed Romeo & Juliet in number of fics on AO3. keep it up)

now if I was forced to pick favorites in Romeo & Juliet, I would have to say the aforementioned Benvolio and Mercutio- both as a duo and as individuals, they are so flipping wonderful. I saw a local production of Romeo & Juliet over the summer, and ever since then, I have been deathly defensive of them. I will fight over the fact that they're both so well written and well characterized. (I also super love them as a ship- in the production I saw, when Romeo and Juliet met for the first time, there were plenty of duos in the background, slow dancing, and Ben and Merc were dancing together, and I just... I have no words. they're perfect.)

anyway. Benvolio first. Ben is such a big cousin sort of character, iykwim. there's something so tragic about the fact that he tried from the very beginning to get everyone to stop fighting, but no matter what he did or said, he couldn't save them- not his cousin, not his best friend. (I've never seen Hamlet, but I'm told that Benvolio is the Horatio of R&J. Shakespeare knew which archetypes work, I guess.) he's so awesome. I love him

and Mercutio! Merc is just a kid you guys. he's a teenage boy. he's so funny and free spirited and every time I watch R&J, all I can think about is "he's here for a good time, not a long time." because it's so true! his recklessness and immaturity leads to his death! (another theme, perhaps- because while he did sort of bring it upon himself, I would never say it's his fault- but that's a rant for another day.) Merc is just so immediately lovable and his death hurts me the most. his death is the turning point between a mostly light hearted play to the tragedy that we associate with it, and that makes it hurt even more. (and Ben holds him when he dies and Ben is left all alone at the end, and oh my god Shakespeare is famous for a reason.)

so, yeah. this is very long and mostly unedited, sorry. you pushed the right buttons to keep me talking for hours. maybe I'll start posting more about my other fandoms, because this was a lot of fun. thank you so much for asking :D

came across another poll about who people’s LEAST favourite main character is, and as always, it’s mike (i already knew because i checked the comments first, so i selected him to double check and then unselected. i don’t have a least favourite out of any of the boys, they’re all my babies lol)

anyways the comments also say mike was their favourite in seasons 1-2 but not anymore. they also described why lucas, dustin and will are great but then didn’t even know what to say about mike because his character basically revolves around el and he doesn’t even feel like his own person anymore. all he did in season 4 was fight with el then go save her and got forced into saying a corny speech. many people have also said the writing for mike and finn’s acting has gotten worse (which i think is intentional in his scenes with el because he’s absolutely incredible in his scenes with will), but that says a lot anyway about his relationship with her. they also said his only character trait is liking el which is really sad. if he stays with her, that’s just horrible character writing and they’ve really turned mike into “el’s boyfriend” and that’s it. he’s barely even his own person anymore and the GA can see it.

but seriously, isn’t it interesting how most people stopped liking mike the moment he started dating el (seasons 3-4) because that’s when he changed and his character development went downhill?

now obviously most of us on here know there’s so much more going on with mike and it hurts to see people hate him so much. but honestly, when you don’t analyse like we do and you just see what’s on screen, some of the things he’s done (especially to will) IS shitty and weird especially if there’s no internalised homophobia explanation. like there’s absolutely no other reason for him to suddenly treat him so badly, and getting a girlfriend is no excuse and totally out of character for mike. also in general it’s just shitty seeing mike’s entire character revolve around el. what did he even do in seasons 3 and 4 that were focused on himself and his OWN personal storyline?? the closest thing we got to that were his scenes with WILL. but when he’s with el… it’s just always about her! it’s not fair to mike. this kid has so much trauma too and he can’t even talk to his own girlfriend about it because they don’t understand each other at all. there’s no proper communication or emotional support. even when mike tried to comfort el, she invalidated his trauma and said he doesn’t understand even though she literally witnessed him get bullied and jump off a cliff?? like it’s just so hurtful and unhealthy that they don’t understand each other at all. will was literally the only person that comforted mike and gave him strength and allowed him to express himself but anyways.

hopefully the writers have realised why one of their main characters has gone from most popular to most disliked. mike isn’t actually the problem, it’s the relationship he’s in and how it’s destroying his character and also hurting other characters around him (el has also been hurt because of this relationship). notice how when mike is with will, he turns into the old mike we know and love? the soft voice, the gentleness, the kindness, the one who actually cares about his friends? that side of him comes out when he’s with will because will brings out the best in him. he can actually be HIMSELF with him without being fake. but when mike is with el, he pretends to be someone he’s not. he becomes selfish and immature and excludes his friends and pushes everyone away. i absolutely hate it and i’m sick of it because i know that’s not who he really is. the show is literally trying to tell us this relationship isn’t healthy and i’m sick of people ignoring it.

ep15 (part 1): compels me though

starting off, sect leader yao gets such a bad rap in fics because he'a annoying/a symbol of mindless agreement with the popular opinion, but it seems a bit mean to me. the dude got really badly hurt to protect his guys

oh, wwx. poor sweet naive wwx. it's wild to think he once had faith that the JIN clan would be on the side of justice here

honestly I find this a very stupid pretext to get jfm out of LP. there is no need for him to personally go in such tense times, and no need for jyl to go with him

GIRL DISCIPLES! OH BOY!

myu in this episode is so fascinating to me. I don't think it's a stretch to say she genuinely cares about jfm even though she treats him like garbage. those two things can, and often do co-exist. she expresses her affection sideways because...what, she's embarrassed? because she's as emotionally repressed as adult jc is? because jfm would refuse it? he doesn't look very happy hearing that she's packing him something to help him. he looks resentful, if anything. man, this family is screwy

look at her being concerned and protective over her daughter! she may be villainized in a lot of scenes but honestly most fics I've read don't capture the balance between 'shrieking, cruel, bitter harpy' and 'genuinely concerned mother and wife'. the area between those two extremes is massive and I don't know that many fan works bother to explore that space without just redeeming her and pretending like she never did anything wrong, or saying 'deep down she loved them all so it's okay'. it's like they worry if they show a scrap of care or humanity then they're excusing everything else she did. but I don't agree. she has nuance but that doesn't mean she's not a horrible mother, and in real life it's not like (most) abusive parents are screaming criticisms and attacking their kids 100% of the time anyway

the way everyone talks about LP in this episode hurts me. 'our Lotus Pier" from wwx "my home" from jc "my Lotus Pier" from myu. interesting 😭

oh dammit. I talked so much about how the wens would have attacked anyway and jc and myu were wrong to blame wwx only for it to be a personal grudge anyway. fuck. well wen chao's actions still aren't wwx's fault and even if they were he did enough to pay it back tenfold

...which is probably the facts that jc has to grapple with post-gc reveal. fuck

ppl like to talk about jc protecting ww from dogs (and he does, in the past) and a certain type of fan seems to think that because jc used to be like this, it means he still is, deep down. he is not. by the postres inn scene with fairy, he clearly is not

I've said that jc never changes, but that's a lie. he becomes so much worse. I grieve for this kid

oh huh. wwx being trapped at LP isn't ever anything that's rly talked about in fics bc LP signifies youth and innocence and happiness and freedom but here it is. wwx suspects he's being spied on by myu too, which 😬

jc's panic and anger vs. wwx's cool, clearheaded response and reminder. jc is really not suited to leadership I feel so bad for him

THIS SCENE FUCKS SEVERELY. it's everything ramped up to 100. it's one of my favorite sequences in the show, and absolutely one of the top three non-wx related scenes. maybe the very best for me. the arrogance of this woman is breathtaking and if you know a thing about myu you can see where it's going

YOU SAID THAT??? MISS FORMER MAID??? YOU HAVE THE GALL TO SAY THAT TO A CULTIVATOR OBSESSED WITH BLOODLINES???

glaring at wwx OKAY way to make every convo about beating him down

obviously this is a really hard scene to watch and I always have mixed feelings on it bc on the one hand. obviously really upsetting. on the other, myu is acting to appease a sect that will destroy their entire home if not satisfied. she is not harming him permanently, and MAY be pulling her punches so the damage isn't as bad as it looks (tho arguments like 'he can walk later!' don't rly pull weight for me bc wwx walks off horrific pain all the time)

I don't think this means she secretly cares about wwx further than as a tool to keep jc/the sect safe (she needs him functional, after all), or that it means she's a good person, but it's a strategic decision that wwx understands and accepts because of the political situation they're in.

logically myu obviously uses zidian on wwx in other cases, because he talks about it, bc it's talked about enough that lwj knows about it, and because she didn't need to close the doors (implying it's a commonplace sight that nobody would balk at) but we don't actually see any of her whipping as punishment onscreen

and yeah he's bleeding from his mouth already so it's not like it was nothing

Tbh I still feel like Kendall is a bad parent more similarly to how Caroline was a bad parent, though obviously he holds a lot more power as a man running a media empire and does wield it. Still, there's just some lines Logan has crossed (canon or implied) combined with how we haven't personally seen him as a young man play out that makes it difficult to "woobify" him to the same extent of his kids. Of course he's deeply tragic and I'd never want to leave that out in portraying his abuse, but it doesn't feel totally equivalent to me.

(At least until we get a Sophie spinoff where we see from her POV just how bad her parents fucked her up 💔)

The thing is fandoms usually woobify white men no matter what they do as long as their pretty, thin and young like, if they made a succesion prequel and they casted an attractive young man to play a young logan roy, then i guarantee you that he would be tumblr's and twitter's little meow meow within a week, so that's why it's funny to me when the fandom says that evil uncle noah is no excuse for his horrible parenting of his kids, but if if anyone were to say that logan's abuse is no excuse for ken to treat iverson and sophie so horribly (he attempted to commit suicide in front of them) then you would get dragged by everyone in the fandom and that sort of hypocrisy kills me lol.

I used to think ken was a mini caroline but i've changed my mind ever since america decides, like him deliberately electing a nazi despite having a brown daughter (i know he doesn't see sophie as real person but still) is so fucking horrific that you can't really come back from that like, caroline's whole shtick is that she is a passive, emotionally neglectful, deadbeat and while ken is also that it's also implied that he did coke off his kids ipads, he lost his temper with iverson (no way it was the first time) the kenrava fight in church and state is probably something the kids have witnessed before, he attempted to commit suicide right in front of them, he probably never stood up for them when logan made racist and ableist digs, he still choose to be around logan when he hit/attempted to poison iverson and while the show is about generational abuse/trauma then how come the fandom gives ken so much slack and yet insist logan is an evil overlord that was born awful???? mind you even ewan said in his eulogy that logan hasn't always been this way and that he eventually stopped giving a fuck about hurting people because the world has been so cruel to him.

I'm personally not a fan of woobifying in general but something in me just really can't stand the hypocrisy like, no ken isn't a "bad" a parent as logan, but then again logan probably wasn't a "bad" a parent as uncle noah either which is why he died thinking his kids were overdramatic brats and honestly you're kidding yourself if you think ken wouldn't think sophie is being an overdramatic brat if she ever had the courage to call him out for electing a nazi that nearly ruined america.

tw: mentions of death

he was born on december 27th, 1998 to a hunting family that has been hunting for as long as anyone remembers. his dad, his uncles, his mother, his grandparents? all hunters. jaejin was also trained to be a hunter ever since he was a small kid. didn't question it much, even though his upbringing was tough and strict. he just knew he would never risk a supernatural being hurting someone he cares about.

his dad also owns a side-hustle called fables. it's a restaurant, but it's also a place for his dad to do his illegal business of selling whatever supernatural parts he has collected (and buying weapons, occasionally). jaejin is the current chef of the place. really enjoys cooking and treats it like a hobby, almost.

jaejin lost his mother to a werewolf hunt when he was 14. it kind of fueled him even further.

he also has a little sister, whom he was(/is?) very close to. she was also a hunter, but was presumed dead for a while after a hunting gig gone wrong. (surprise surprise, she's not dead, she's a werewolf.)

^ cue jaejin's mental crisis. he's currently still very actively hunting, but questioning it for the first time in his life. if he follows the code of conduct (made by his family!!), he would have to kill his sister. but can he do that? and if he doesn't, how could he justify killing other supernaturals?

he has a difficult relationship with his dad. he's the person jaejin has tried to please more than anyone in his whole life, but he's also horrible, kind of abusive and just doesn't care about anything other than the code of conduct. jaejin knows he would immediately throw him to the wolves (probably literally) if he found out jaejin has been keeping his sister a secret from him.

if you didn't get it yet, jaejin's whole basis of doing things is to protect people he cares about. he's the kind of annoying big brother who will literally follow you around to make sure you're not in trouble.

but he hardly admits things like that. the thing is, jaejin is very cold and aloof on the outside. he's even mean and intimidating a lot of the time. he will not really care if he says something hurtful if it's something he honestly thinks.

jaejin is very neat and organized. a little obsessively so, even (think levi from attack on titan). it takes a whole ritual to clean himself after a hunt. this obviously follows him on the hunts too, makes him very precise and particular.

he's pretty fond of knives as a weapon. or in general. maybe that's why he likes cooking so much? too bad they're pretty risky when it comes to killing supernatural beings, but i guess he prefers the challenge.

jaejin's other interests include metal music and skateboarding.

generally a smart guy. gets annoyed a lot by people, especially by them messing up. will clean up said messes if he cares even a little, though (because he's actually soft for people he likes. he just pretends so hard not to be, i hate him).

possible plots / connections???

(( this is for a new character, but i'll put it here anyways: his sister! i have tried to keep her pretty vaguely described if anyone would like to muse up a character from her, all i'm really after is someone born in '00-02. she was turned by the kang pack originally, but i suppose she could have left the pack afterwards. ))

little brother / sister figures. jaejin is a big brother in capital letters, and he would definitely "adopt" someone as his younger sibling, especially now since his relationship with his own sister is kind of difficult. i would also love this person to kind of hate jaejin looking after them so much without them asking.

enemies, especially supernaturals! maybe someone he has chased and hunted for a long time but has not been able to catch. maybe a fairy or gumiho purposely playing pranks on him to get him annoyed? maybe a werewolf who just loathes him because he's been targeting the werewolves so much??? anything!

a win-win relationship. maybe it's even a kind of hush-hush one, maybe a witch helping jaejin out in order to have him help out them in return? maybe they have a bit of a rocky start (jaejin especially), but they may warm up to each other eventually.

hunters! they could be frenemies, in competition with each other. maybe they'd casually help each other out?

your muse has saved jaejin one (or more) times. jaejin would hate that, because he's usually striving to save others. bonus points if your muse constantly reminds him of that. (this could be another hunter/human, but could easily be a supernatural too!)

any potential romantic connections! exes, fwbs, crushes... i do think it would be entirely possible for jaejin to "eye" someone even if they're a supernatural, especially if it's in a casual setting where he couldn't possibly be certain of them. ooor maybe someone is crushing on him and he's completely blind to it? or maybe he's even aware but just doesn't react, or reacts meanly?? i dunno, i do love a bit of romance even though jaejin is probably not the biggest romantic out there sldkfj.

angst. angst in any way and form. he could have hurt someone your muse loves, a family member, anything. he could be attempting to hurt you and then stops himself?? he could be mean but meaning well and your muse reacts badly?

A little I Am Not Okay With This rant for the soul :)

I really hate how some people I see online treat Syd like she’s the scum of the earth for what happened with her and Stan's relationship because I highly doubt they have ever experienced what's it's like being a scared, queer teenager. Especially as a teenage girl.

Yes, Syd led Stan on, and yes, it really was a shitty thing to do. But I feel like so many people are missing the big picture. We all know that her finding out that she has powers (especially powers that she can't control) is really stressful for her. But on top of that, she's realizing that not only she's a lesbian, but that she has a crush on her best friend, who is at the time of it happening, VERY taken.

When I found out I was bi, I personally wasn't super affected by it. But that isn't the same for everyone, some kids are absolutely scared shitless when they find out and they feel fucking horrible. There's sometimes a lot of guilt and anger when you find out that you might not be as cishet as you were raised to be. And it doesn't always stick you in perfect situations, like when you're in a relationship with someone of a gender that you're not attracted to.

Syd is also, very obviously, kind of awkward when it comes to social interaction. She's visibly uncomfortable at the party, and it's been mentioned that Dina is the only best friend Syd has ever had. So there isn't exactly a high chance of her being able to know what to do in this type of situation, especially with all the other crazy shit going on in her life.

Another thing is that it's very clear that Dina's friendship is very important to Syd, and as someone who has fallen for their close friends before, you will do anything to keep that friendship in tact. And a for a lot of people that means pushing the romantic feelings down as much as possible. But sometimes things are just out of our control, enter the kiss. You can see in Syd's eyes that she was starting to panic when she realized what she had just done. And then (remember this is before the dance) Dina essentially rejects Syd and tries to brush it off as them just being drunk. Drunk friends. Just friends.

That is a sentence that, from experience, can hurt so much when you have a crush on someone that you're close with. And, naturally, Syd breaks down. She lost control of herself and now has probably lost the most important person in her life. And that person is Dina. And then we get the whole thing with the trees and Stan finding out and blah blah blah.

Moral of my essay/rant/whatever, I fucking hate people who dislike Syd and then use Stan as their excuse. Not because I personally really like Syd, but because they clearly missed everything she has been going through in the whole show and then go on to treat Stan like he has done no wrong (I love Stan he's an great character but the bowling alley scene was really fucked up, don't use other's trauma like that guys, no matter how much you think it will benefit them.) Stan isn't an excuse to hate on another character who is clearly in need of a lot of help. You just didn't watch the fucking show.

(Also, I can see that it sounds like I'm putting Syd on some sort of pedestal, I'm not. There's no perfect characters, just like there's no perfect people. It just really pisses me off when people use uncontrollable flaws as a reason to talk shit about a person.)

so pre acosf i was a major anti nesta. like i really disliked her. but i respected the fact that she was a bitch through and through and wasn’t changing for anything or anyone. and then i read acosf and really disliked rhysand (who was my number 1 book boyfriend previously) and it’s literally the terrible internalised misogyny in sjm and her writing that made me dislike him

firstly i thought it was so weird how the inner circle treated nesta like she was the greatest evil of all time and had murdered their children. i thought it was just so silly 💀 like nesta and her mistakes compared to what rhysand has done, compared to how many people az and cass hahe killed is literally just nothing. like compared to what all the other characters have done i feel like nesta being a bitch and letting feyre hunt is honestly so much less evil and feels so hypocritical for the inner circle to regard her in such a negative way because of it (considering the evil things they’ve done)

but anyway, i honestly started to hate rhysand after the entire pregnancy secret came out. was nesta in the right? NO. absolutely not. but rhys is the reason it was even able to come out like that. he’s the man with power and withheld the info from feyre because apparently no more choices for feyre exist after acowar 🫶

but to have to read about rhys sitting in velaris and laughing with cassian about nesta getting punished for spilling the beans as if his wife didn’t just find out she’s gonna die and he didn’t just threaten to kill nesta was so oddly misogynistic to me that i had to pause. like rhys really got out of that situation scott free? i know everyone makes headcanons that feyre yelled at him or something but … come on. in canon no one blames rhys for shit. even cassian doesn’t blame rhys at all and just punished nesta on that god awful hike where he makes her walk (on a trail he himself says could easily kill someone unexperienced WHILE NESTA IS UNEXPERIENCED) for 4 days until she passes out of exhaustion is just … horrible? i think that’s when my opinion on nesta really just flipped.

like i just feel sad for her and the narrative that is honestly never on her side. after acowar, i’m not sure why rhysand still hated her so much like she literally saved cassian’s life twice? helped them through acomaf with the queens and then all through acowar? obviously she was a bitch that used their money but honestly she kept to herself and only lashed out when they sought her out. like she didn’t go out of her way to find them and fight with them. idk the entire inner circle feels so weird after acosf like this happy bubble just popped and honestly they’re not as amazing as i’ve thought they were?

this turned into a rant but i really need sjm to address this whole nesta punishment situation in some way in the future books (i know she won’t because rhys is rarely held accountable or truly made to look like a bad guy) but i really need some justice for nesta 😭

i know lots of people blame nesta and say she deserved the way she was treated in acosf and after telling feyre about the pregnancy but after reading acosf through really neutral and unbiased eyes, i honestly think rhysands behaviour is excused just bec he’s a guy that everyone loves and nesta is a bitch so she ‘deserves’ to be treated badly and unfairly

There are a few things I miss from acomaf - Rhys, and the IC.

This isn't character development, it's like character demolishment, especially in Rhys's case. That anon I answered earlier this week said that they think he was in character in acosf, but I still just have a hard time with that! Not necessarily with Nesta, because I could see that building from the moment they met, but with the pregnancy. That's beside the point, though.

I wonder.... I wonder if this is because of sjm's habit of not writing villains very well, and by that I don't mean Nesta is a villain - like objectively speaking, she doesn't serve that function in the story - but what I mean is that her villains are very two-dimensional, boring, flat, I rarely understand their motivations. And her protagonists are very good, beautiful, powerful, the Most Best Ever. Then enter Nesta, who is somewhere in between the most perfect angel/demon... idk, I kinda wonder if this didn't expose a weakness in sjm's characterization overall, that she just couldn't write a character with flaws and like, deal with that in a normal way?

I do think that the IC as individuals all dealt with Nesta in different ways, and to me most of those ways made sense. Amren, Mor, Azriel, even Cassian, their behavior, while not perfect or ideal, makes sense to me. But Rhys? He got turned into a prop to create conflict in acosf.

Just watched strange world, it was really fun. I've never seen an environmental message handled so well in a movie before. It's also really funny. I loved all the family dynamics.

The focus was obviously the dads, but I like that they also had little scenes with Ethan and his mom showing how well they get along. Meridian is an amazing mom (also she should get a medal because literally everyone in this movie would have died if she weren't there to pilot the airship, which she admitted that is the biggest airship she's ever seen so like... GIVE THIS WOMAN HER OWN STATUE IN THE TOWN SQUARE TOO PLEASE!!)

The other thing I really appreciate in this is that line Searcher had calling Jaeger a horrible father, when he didn't have to be!! That was amazing to see in a Disney movie and said to a sympathetic character no less. And it's not treated as him going too far and he didn't regret saying it afterwards or anything. I love that. Just because Jaeger wasn't abusive towards his son doesn't make him a good father. Too many stories are asking us to perform mental gymnastics to excuse horrible parents and I'm tired of it. Jaeger isn't the worst parent, but he wasn't a good one either and I'm glad the movie addresses that.

ALSO SPLAT WAS ADORABLE AND HILARIOUS AND I LOVE IT AND I WANT TO SQUISH IT AND HUG IT AND IT'S THE BEST CHARACTER IN THIS MOVIE!!! (and I loved the dog too, he was adorable 🥺🥺)

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again. I am not ignorant to the problems this franchise has. I can hate the bad parts while still loving the good parts. I can say “this isn’t right” and “here’s how it could’ve been better” at the same time. I can love Uma and Mal, honestly. I’m a grown fucking woman, I contain multitudes :P

I know this series has a horrible double standard when it comes to race. Colorblind casting, female driven stories - great! Casting nearly every antagonist as a black girl, obviously not great. They really didn’t think about the optics of what they were doing and it came off in a terrible way.

I wish Uma and Audrey were treated better. And believe it or not, I have lots of problems with the way Mal was written. The movies kind of fell apart and failed to deliver on a satisfying story over all. Each movie has its high points, and they obviously all have their low points too. I mostly wish the movies were written with a lot more (read: ANY) thought and care. That any character felt like they had a satisfying arc in the end. But, that’s something we’ll never get!

You wouldn’t know it these days but fandom is not politics. Liking a “bad” character does not make you a bad person. Liking a movie or a show with shitty writing doesn’t make you a shitty person. You can say “Yes I recognize the issues with [character/movie/show] but I still choose to engage with it bcoz...” whatever! It has bad writing but you like the songs, the characters, one particular relationship, etc.

Liking something with faults doesn’t magically make you ignorant to said thing’s faults!!

If you get an inkling of things like, in this case, the racist optics and double standards, pay attention to that! You need to be able to spot these things. Bcoz there is absolutely no such thing as pure, perfect, unproblematic media. Any and everything you can consume has SOME issue with it. Just be smart, listen to what people (especially POC, especially here) say about it. You can learn, be aware, be critical, be smart, consume, enjoy, have fun, praise the good parts, scorn the bad parts. You can do it all at once!

And I mean it’s easy to see the issues in Descendants. And it’s also easy to not want to engage in the constant negativity surrounding it. Especially in this case, and I’m sorry, when a lot of the times the argument seems to just be “If you like this character then you’re racist” end of story. It’s not accurate, and it doesn’t paint a good picture of the whole fandom when there’s no room for nuance.

Yet again the only reason I started the whole “poor little meow meow Mal did nothing wrong” in the first place is bcoz I was fed up of all the negative takes on her. Calling her a killer ?? pretending that she’d done all sorts of evil and fucked up stuff like it was canon when there was NO evidence to suggest it. And I’m tired of that. Sure the story was unfair and she got off easy, but people are basically just writing fanfic about all her made up misdeeds so they can have MORE reasons to hate her and MORE reasons to get angry at this fictional little Disney child that doesn’t really exist! CHILL

And I’m sorry but choosing ONLY to focus your anger on Mal and saying it’s because of double standards in the story, and then turning around and excusing other characters for the same shit that Mal does... That’s funny.

Anyway long story short to answer your question Nonny. I don’t think H is singling me out but I’m sure I’m lumped in there with everyone else. Like it’s not even funny anymore. But nothing anyone says is going to change anyone’s minds so. Everyone feels how they feel and we’re all just screaming into the blue void of tumblr

OTH 1x07 Rewatch

If by ‘weird vibe’ you mean absolutely no chemistry then you would be correct. I can’t even give them the narrative, everything about them feels forced, I can feel the writing trying to make me care about them and I should never feel like the writing is trying to manipulate me.

Their whole thing reminds me of the opening lines of Sk8er boi “He was a boy, she was a girl, can I make it anymore obvious?” because that’s what the narrative is doing like, Peyton’s tortured, he’s tortured so obviously they’re going to have a thing, without Chad and Hilarie having the chemistry to make that work whereas again with Marissa and Ryan, if I were to be like, “He was a boy ,she was a girl, can I make it anymore obvious?” and overlayed it on their driveway scene, their vibe would do the heavy lifting.

It also makes no sense that Peyton would invite Lucas to Dan’s house to talk about their relationship when the last time Lucas went to a Nathan Scott party, he was humiliated and Nathan stole her car to drive another girl home.

Honestly, Naley eventually becomes really cute but Haley starting to look at Nathan differently because he said two lines about having emotions and gave her a bracelet from a Cracker Jack box has me like ... girl. Which again, this is why I generally don’t like these kinds of storylines because the asshole character does the bare minimum and the character who’s meant to know better is immediately like THEY’RE NOT WHAT YOU THINK. And it’s made worse by the fact that Haley doesn’t know the other shit that Nathan is done, she wasn’t there for the prom video or for when he said that Dan wished Lucas was a stain, she doesn’t know that after dropping her off in Peyton’s car, he got into a hit and run, said he didn’t care if Peyton got in trouble, tried to pin it on Lucas, went back home and asked Peyton if she wanted to have sex. Nathan is horrible and a cracker jack bracelet is enough to semi-erase that? Lol K.

All of these characters making stupid decisions in service of drama, why would Keith and Karen go to Dan’s event?

There’s something to be said for how Breyton isn’t the best because of the Lucas agenda but I would say from Brooke’s side. Like two episodes ago Brooke gives Peyton a wakeup call about how she lets Nathan treat her like shit and now because she’s trying to go for Lucas, she’s telling Peyton they’re meant to be together. Inconsistent. Peyton is consistently shitty to Brooke.

Girl, WHY.

but this actually hasn’t happened yet! He’s just made like four corny jokes and you laughed. Oh my God, these episodes are painful.

I like how Lucas just not being an active asshole is what makes him a really good kid. Like he hasn’t really done anything except not be actively terrible.

I’m not saying what Brooke is doing at the event is excusable, I am saying that the episodes we’ve seen up until now, Brooke isn’t actually mean-spirited. And Nathan getting irritated at her is like sit down, sir, you were publicly humiliating Lucas two seconds ago.

And again, things that are avoidable but are done to ratchet up drama in a show with already pretty bad writing makes me roll my eyes. There’s literally no reason for Haley to interrupt Peyton and Lucas, the writers just wanted to interrupt their second kiss.

I’m sorry, I’m just laughing because this is supposed to be sincerity

and it looks like a line. You need to channel

a lot of people hate her for misogyny reasons too lol. the transphobic shit was obviously shitty but like if we're being honest, every dude in bandom has said MUCH worse (i'm trans, btw, not some cis person trying to excuse transphobia lol). a lot of the hate, especially back when cobra was still together, def came from everyone in that scene just being super misogynistic. i don't even like her tbh (i do admire her ability to survive in that environment for so long, though. i could NEVER) but i tend to jump to defending her just because of how so much of the hate towards her is for stuff that equally applies to everyone else in the band (or just like literally everyone else on the scene in general).

she def has been annoying about cobra ever since they broke up though lmao, but tbh i forgive her for that bc if I did One Cool Thing in my life i'd def be milking that shit for the rest of time

misogyny plays a big part in it as well i completely agree and i never see anyone talk about it. She was treated horribly by fans when they were still active it's everywhere on livejournal and old blogs on here calling her a slut for wearing a bra or saying she didn't contribute to the music in any way and should just be kicked out. Even in interviews when the guys were all asked about music and she would be asked how it was to live with all boys it must've been so annoying for her, its incredible she never snapped and told shitty interviewers to fuck off honestly. you're also so right about the fact that the men aren't held to the same standard and are allowed to do shit like this and it's seen as an accident or something to learn from while for women it's not something she can come back from and it's completely irredeemable.

The main thing about the cobra posts is the fact that i believe it played a part in them not being friends anymore which just kinda makes me sad they seemed really close during the band and were pubically talking up until 2018 or maybe later. i can't really blame her for talking about it a lot, it was her whole life for nearly 10 years, 4 albums, so many tours and festivals and tv shows. it's also what she's most known for and possibly will be for the rest of her life, plus they were nominated for awards, had multiple songs go platinum, preformed to massive crowds, became friends to some of the biggest musicians of the 2000s and became the one of the faces of a whole music genre, if i ever did one of those things i'd never shut the fuck up about it lmao.

I saw people making fun of her when she was complaining about her wiki page being removed, cause she was being "over-dramatic" but i'd be pissed as well, a whole page dedicated to all her work over nearly 2 decades gone and now all she is is an assistant. ALL WHILE THE MEN OF THE BANDS PAGES WERE STILL UP!!! SHE DESERVED TO BE PISSED ABOUT IT! they're all gone now but gabes but that's not the point, she showed fair emotions and was ridiculed

Thank you anon. 🥺🥺🥺 I'm trying to make myself feel better about this. It's hard when I'm literally only drywall and shit away from her. I really want to run away and hide. I'm getting people telling me she might be some form of mentally deranged and that she's old enough for things like dementia or even that she did something to the birds herself but I don't want to blame mental illness for her being cruel and mean. Obviously my roommate said we can't move so I guess the only thing to do is wait for her to die as cruel sounding as that is. I see no way that any form of real civility or friendship can come back after this. It's a complete violation of trust. My roommate wanted to chew her out and get mad at her for it being "slander" and "harassment" I don't really know if it's either but I do know that if he confronts her she's going to get worse because that always happens. I miss the nice lady who used to live there. She was nice to Cazza and her cats would say hi to Cazza and she died of cancer just like Cazza. I wonder why this person started off being nice and giving me things only to then do this. I kept trying to tell her not to give me things but she insisted. Was that just her making it so that she could say I take and take? That's another thing that happens. Adults will "give" you things and then expect things from you. But she doesn't seem to want something from me so it's not just yet more grooming like usual. I'm so burned up and exhausted. I told my roommate I'm too scared to leave the house so he's gonna walk Scott from here on out. Hoping that if I buy myself treats and toys it'll comfort me enough to not want to die anymore but no promises. My brain has just been going "Andy die Andy want go thrift store" on loop all night which I guess is preferable to most else.

I kept trying to think of what I actually did to make her do this to me and treat me this way but my roommate said I didn't actually do anything to deserve it and it's a problem with her and she wanted an excuse to be bad and all that which in theory I understand but unlike weirdos on Twitter this is somebody that is right fucking there in the flesh.

She actually early on brought up unprompted how she hopes birds around here stay safe and nothing bad happens to them because "people are horrible" and I have to wonder if that's some sort of weird projection. I have no idea. But as someone who helped a downed nest of baby crows when I was younger and who would shoo off outdoor cats when they were outside my window chasing things up trees it's very insulting to have the blame thrust on me.

My Deconstruction

Tiktoc is a wonderful thing. So many creators and so many points of view. After spending months watching people speak on religion, I figured out what I have been going thru for so many years. I never knew what to call it. For years, I have searched for something to believe in. A higher power that I could lean on in times of hardship. Growing up in Texas, I was conditioned to believe that it was a requirement. At 17, my mother came out of the closet. We spent a lot of time in my childhood reading the bible together so I know it from front to back. Looking back I realize that I never really stopped to let myself fully comprehend what the bible was saying. I just followed my mothers que. When she came out, I didn't know what to think of Christianity anymore. My mother spent all that time teaching me homosexuality was immoral but was now immoral herself. Was I supposed to hate her for it? Was she going to burn for it?

I went in search of something to believe in. All forms of Christianity. I tried to worship each of them but it seemed so awkward to me now.

When I moved to New York I began to see other walks of life that I had never been exposed to before. People from other countries showed me that Christianity has many different faces. Most of them were very open about its flaws. I met a woman thru the women’s shelter in Washington Heights that really helped shape my perspective on religion in general. She claimed she was a medium and had spoken with many spirits in her lifetime. Little did I know that, in the future, I would soon see exactly what she was talking about.

My journey moved out of Christianity into Catholicism. Again, it was awkward. Scratch that. I looked into what the celebrities were doing...... Too much chanting, tongues, and snakes. What the hell was I thinking? I'm not supposed to be questioning what I grew up with so I stopped voicing my search due to the scrutiny. Obviously I couldn't talk to family about it.

I left New York and moved home to Texas but was more pissed then ever. Fuck religion, fuck god, and fuck everyone who had ever taught me that religion in general had any value.

Where was god while my dad was beating us up? Where was god when my mother fell short of his glory? Where was god when that horrible family took my son from me? And where was god when every man that had ever walked into my life has treated me like a doormat?

After leaving the shelter in New York, the medium had given me a couple of books for the bus ride home, and I began to read them out of boredom. I won’t name the book here but the author wrote of how they feel about god and what god thinks of humanity. I finished the books in a different headspace. My first thought was I need to get out of Texas, but I have no where to go.

I attending a short college course on religious studies and was blown away again. So much hate and violence. Its given men the excuse to rape and pillage without consequence. These men came over here to the US so they could do the exact same thing they were doing in Europe.

Colorado offers a variety. I never hear a word about religions. Everyone here just gets up and goes to church. Its not made a spectacle out of. Do your thing, go worship. Why do I need to hear about it too?

What's the point of religion? I have enough to worry about. This entire time I was slowly pulling away from religion. Deconstructing my religion. I wouldn’t say I’m atheist but I’m close. In 2022, I became a member of the Satanic Temple. I can back something that doesn’t tell me I’m going to burn all the time. People don’t need religion to be good people.
