For valentines prompts, #11 (memorizing their coffee order and surprising them with it) for the Library Boys would be delightful ❤️
Thank you for sending in a prompt! This plays out some time in June, before they get together, because I thought it would be way more fun this way. Enjoy! (betaed by the amazing @ml-nolan!)
Hob groans. He'd hoped to escape work for a few moments by going to the small but nice student café down the street. He didn't sleep well last night, and so he wanted to shove the tiredness back with a nice coffee. Hob doesn't have coffee often, and likes to indulge when he does. Point is, he certainly didn't expect Dream I-own-a-two-litre-french-press-for-work Olympiou to be in the line two people in front of him. He watches Dream, his smart trousers and coat, his unruly hair, the perpetual displeased slant of his mouth.
Hob doesn't really know what to do, so he keeps quiet. They never really encounter each other outside of work, and Hob takes advantage of the fact that Dream hasn't noticed him yet (and will not, if things go Hob's way). Dream takes a look at his phone and his frown deepens.
The barista is clearly new, taking a lot of time to fill each order. Hob's small break will have to suffice as his lunch break, he supposes. Ten minutes later, it's Dream's turn. He orders, unsurprisingly, a large black coffee in his low, smooth voice.
And then he orders another coffee, and Hob realises that this must be the reason he's here at all, probably picking up a coffee for a friend of his.
“Latte, with foam and two pumps of vanilla, please.”
Huh.
Dream pays, proceeding to walk towards the exit, and Hob lets out a breath, tension leaving his body. Dream hasn't seen him.
Just as he is almost past Hob he stops and turns, the look in his eyes indecipherable. Hob wants to flick his stupidly cute, turned up nose so badly it pains him.
“You will be late for your shift if you keep waiting,” Dream states.
“Yeah, and you will be, too, if you don't move. I'll survive, Aamira’s got the shift before me.” Hob doesn't know if Dream knows about his little shift arrangement with her, and to be frank, he doesn't really care.
“So you would rather inconvenience your coworker?”
Hob scoffs. “Our coworker. And besides—” he trails off as he notices that Dream is holding out one of the cups towards him in clear invitation. Must have been doing so for some time, in fact. “Wait, what?”
Dream's expression assumes an air of patronising amusement. “Do you want your coffee or would you rather wait for a second one?”
Your coffee. Hob feels like someone pulled the rug out from under him, and for a moment, all he can feel is astonishment. “How on earth did you know?” he asks, snatching the cup away from Dream. Latte with two pumps of vanilla. Fucking hell.
“You're welcome,” Dream deadpans, striding—strutting, Hob thinks, almost shaking his head—towards the door.
“Hey, wait, what do I owe—” the door almost slams shut in Hob's face as he goes after him, avoiding a bruised nose just out of reflex. Hob contemplates running after him. Instead, he walks out and keeps a few paces behind Dream, taking sips from his coffee and enjoying the view. He almost doesn't notice the coffee burning his tongue.

This Playlist is technically for my library boys in Scientia Aeterna, but it initially started as a Varigo list, so I thought I'd share. Hope you enjoy. It's updated regularly.

Hey hey 💜 I’m here to humbly request either a snippet or some more info about library boys if you so please 😁🙏🏼
Tumblr media
Hi lovelies! I'm kind of very much excited to share a snippet of this little thing 😃 I started writing it last spring during thesis writing as a way to cope with the endless stress that was my dumb thesis and it was very therapeutic actually! It's a very fun little meet-cute AU with kind of a light enemies-to-lovers vibe where they fight over a table at the library (the good table) and Simon's thesis writing is going about as well as mine did 😅
Here's a little snippet too!
It’s Monday. Four weeks into the semester, roughly sixteen before this stupid Word document has to be filled with words and not question marks and unreadable bullet points. Things are looking dark at the moment. But. There is a catch. Simon has figured out the trick. If he just manages to get to the library extra early, he can snag the good table (his table) before the prince and his stupid pretty face and stolen glances and annoying friends.
The library opens at 8 on weekdays and if Simon wakes up at the ass crack of dawn, takes an earlier bus that doesn’t entirely match his schedule and leaves him freezing outside the library doors for a good fifteen minutes before they open, then voilá - the table is his.
It’s a feeling of triumphant victory when he easily plugs in his charger right next to him, enjoys the way the open window at his left provides some natural light and a good-enough substitute for vitamin D as he’s spending his days banished to the indoors.
The prince himself shows up at five past 8 and halts in his step as he spots Simon. He stands there for a second, almost as if he’s contemplating trying to sit next to him. As if.
Instead, he reluctantly makes his way to the other table in the back, slumps down in the chair next to the shelves and pulls out his own laptop.
Simon was right. They sit there for most of the day and the prince doesn’t have to charge it once.

Friday, I’m in Love (Library Boys, 32/?)
On Friday morning, both Jared and Jensen have follow-up appointments with the pulmonologist at the Hershey Med Center. Jared will likely be released to go back to work, and Jensen’s hoping to be given the go-ahead to speak once again. Their appointments are an hour apart, but due to delays and such, Jared ends up getting out of his after Jensen’s already been taken back to the exam room for his own, so Jared sits down in the waiting room to wait for Jensen.
He uses his phone to scan the doctor’s note saying he can return to work a week from Monday and emails it to Kim, Jeff, and Loretta from HR. Then he sends a quick note to Samantha letting her know as well. She’ll have to put him back on the schedule. He knows Samantha will be thrilled to stop doing every single training session herself. She’s hardly been getting anything done in between doing all the sessions Jared was scheduled for, and Jared does feel bad about that, but Jensen needed him more than DCLS did, even though Jeff and Kim might think otherwise. Jared is so glad Jensen has the chance to get out of DCLS for good, because Jared is starting to see systemic problems that he never noticed before.
Samantha emails back, pleased with the good news. She asks after Jensen, and before Jared can reply, he gets a text from Jensen. I’m released from vocal rest! And I only have to be on medical leave for another 10 days.
Jared sends back a huge smiley face. I’ll catch you up when you come out. But I’m so happy for you! He ends it with a red heart.
Jensen comes out about ten minutes later with a sheaf of papers. When he sees Jared, he beams and hurries over. Jared wraps his arms around him and gives him the biggest, tightest hug he dares.
When they pull apart, Jensen’s still grinning. “Hey,” he croaks, his voice still froggy and hoarse, but it’s the sweetest sound Jared’s ever heard.
“Hey yourself,” replies Jared with a big grin of his own. “Ready to get going?”
Jensen nods. “Lead the way.”
They head out to the parking lot. Jensen’s still moving slower than usual, but that’s to be expected. He’s still a bit short of breath, and they had to park pretty far away from the door because the parking lot is mostly handicapped spots. It’s also uphill, forcing Jensen to stop halfway up to rest.
“I should have brought the car to the door and picked you up,” says Jared.
Jensen waves a hand. “It’s fine,” he gasps. “I need the exercise.”
“You really don’t,” counters Jared. “You’re supposed to be resting.”
Jensen rolls his eyes. “Yes, mom.”
They start back up the hill a minute later. Jared places his hand on Jensen’s back, just in case. When they get to Jared’s car, Jared opens the door for Jensen and waits for him to sit down. Jensen shakes his head, but he’s smiling.
Back at home, Max jumps on Jensen as soon as he gets through the door. “You want to take him out back? I’ll walk him in a little while.”
“Yeah,” replies Jensen. He pauses for a second before heading to the back door and grabbing Max’s leash from the hook on the wall. “Come on, buddy.” He clips the leash to Max’s collar and pets his head. Max licks his face, clearly happy to see his favorite human, even if they were only gone for about an hour and a half.
Jared goes and brings the trash cans back to the garage while Jensen and Max are outside. Then he pours each of them a glass of water. Once Jensen and Max come in, Max dives for his water bowl and Jared hands Jensen water of his own.
Jensen nods and smiles. “Thanks.” His voice is still scratchy and weak, but Jared supposes that’s to be expected.
Jensen pulls out his phone and checks his email. “Want to come to Middletown … Library with me tomorrow?” He pauses to catch his breath. “The Board wants to show me around … before they make a firm offer.”
“You mean you got the job?”
Jensen grins. “It’s mine if I want it.”
“That’s amazing!” Jared grins ear to ear, matching Jensen’s own expression. He grabs Jensen’s waist and pulls him in for a kiss, mindful to keep it short so Jensen can breathe easily.
When they break apart, Jensen keeps him close, and nuzzles Jared’s cheek with his nose before pressing another short, sweet kiss to Jared’s lips. “I owe it all to you,” murmurs Jensen. “Couldn’t have done it without you.”
“The pleasure’s all mine, babe,” replies Jared. He squeezes Jensen’s ass before pulling away. “We should celebrate later. Think you could handle sashimi?”
Jensen’s eyes brighten. “I think so.” His phone buzzes and he takes it out of his pocket. “Kurt from the Board and Alaina … the full-time librarian … can meet us there … at ten tomorrow.”
“Are you sure you’ll be up for that?” asks Jared, frowning. “You seem tired.”
“I’ll be fine,” says Jensen. “Unless you have something … planned for tonight?” He winks.
Jared’s eyebrows nearly jump right off his head. “You’re up for that? Seriously?”
Jensen nods eagerly. “It’s been like a month.” He smirks and drops his gaze to Jared’s crotch. “What do you think … kept me going in therapy?”
“I mean, I’m not uninterested,” replies Jared. “I just need you to tell me if you start feeling bad.”
“I will.” Jensen locks eyes with Jared. “I promise. I’ll take it slow. It’s just been so damn long.”
“Tell me about it,” says Jared, and decides not to mention just how many times he jacked off to memories of their hottest times in the shower. “Look, why don’t you rest. I’ll throw some laundry in and take Max for a walk.”
Jensen nods and slumps a little, as though he didn’t realize how tired he was until Jared pointed it out. “You do that. I’ll go up and change and you can join me when you get home.”
“You probably should let me shower first. I’ll be gross.”
Jensen waves off that suggestion. “Eh, you’ll be fine. I like your musk. Besides, you’re just gonna get sweaty again, so what’s the point?”
Jared holds up his hands. “Fine, have it your way.” He points to the staircase. “Go lie down. We’ll be back in about half an hour.”
Jensen nods and slowly heads upstairs to their bedroom. Jared follows, not right behind him, but close enough that he can intervene if something happens. He and Jensen both change out of their day clothes. Jensen puts on his pajamas and Jared puts on basketball shorts and a t-shirt. Jared collects their clothes and takes them down to the basement to the washing machine. Once the load has started, Jared goes upstairs and gets Max ready for his walk.
It’s not an overly warm day, but it’s hot in the sun. Jared takes Max down the big hill and back up and that takes up most of the half hour. Jared takes Max to the back porch and lets him shake off the pollen and dust before they go in the house. He gives Max a jerky treat and lets him slurp up some water, and then goes downstairs to load the dryer. Once he’s done, he sets a timer on his phone and goes up to see Jensen. He pats Max on the head on his way up the stairs. Max flops down on his bed with a dramatic tail swish and Jared assumes he’ll go right to sleep.
It’s not that late, but the complex is set up so that their townhouse only gets direct light in the morning. Their bedroom is half-dark when Jared steps inside. Jensen is propped up on pillows with the bamboo blanket over his legs. He appears to be listening to 372 Pages We’ll Never Get Back, a podcast that’s basically Mystery Science Theater 3000 Book Club. Jensen discovered it a few weeks ago and they’re way behind. It sounds like Jensen’s in the middle of one of the Lair of the White Worm episodes.
“Am I interrupting?” Jared says quietly.
Jensen perks up. “Never.” He pats the mattress beside him. “I can change it, though.” He pauses the podcast so as not to miss anything while Jared’s talking.
“Nah, we can hang for a while.” Jared slides in next to Jensen and gets under the blanket with him. “I’ll order dinner when the dryer’s done.”
“Sounds good to me.”
Jared stretches his arm across Jensen’s shoulders. Jensen snuggles right into the crook of Jared’s neck and restarts the podcast. There’s something about a mongoose being killed and Jared tries to remember what happened in the last episode. It’s been a few days since he last listened to it. He hears the sentence “The other mongoose, the one from Nepal. That’s how we’re keeping our mongoose straight.”
“Shit, what’d I miss?” Jared asks quietly.
“There was something about Lady Arabella being a snake and I think she killed their mongoose? Or they killed her mongoose? I wasn’t really paying attention.”
Jared frowns. “I thought this book was about a worm?”
“Well, now there’s snakes and mongooses? Mongeese? I don’t know. And walnuts. They keep mentioning walnuts.”
“Maybe we should actually read the book?”
“I checked, it’s on Hoopla. You just gotta get it before we hit the daily limit.”
“Yeah, I noticed that’s been a big problem lately.” Jared rolls his eyes. “We’re in bed and we’re talking about Hoopla. We’re the biggest fucking nerds ever.”
Jensen chuckles. “I thought that was your favorite thing about me?”
“Yeah, about you. I came into this relationship as Conan the Librarian. You’re a terrible influence.”
“But you love me anyway.” Jensen turns his head and brushes his lips over Jared’s.
Jared leans into the kiss and deepens it as much as he dares. Beneath his arm, he feels Jensen tense up.
Jensen pulls back a millimeter, just far enough to speak. “Don’t start something you can’t finish.”
“Yeah, we should wait.” Jared pulls Jensen back under his arm and rests his chin on top of Jensen’s head. “We’ve got time. All the time in the world.”
They end up just cuddling and listening to the podcast until Jared’s phone timer goes off and he has to go get the laundry out of the dryer. Max is dead to the world when Jared passes by his bed on his way to the basement. Jared collects their clothes and takes them back upstairs. He dumps the clothes out on his own side of the bed and folds them while Jensen dozes lightly on the other side.
Jared gets on his phone and orders sashimi and gyoza for Jensen and hibachi for himself from Tokyo House. He’ll leave a note on Jensen’s phone if Jensen doesn’t wake up before Jared has to leave.
Jensen blinks awake just as Jared reaches for his phone on the nightstand. “Oh, good. I’m leaving for food. I’ll be back in about 20 minutes.”
Jensen yawns. “Can’t wait.” He sits up straighter. “We eating up here?”
“We can, I guess. I can grab your lap desk from the study.”
“No, I’ll get it. You go.”
Jared does as he’s told. When he gets back, Jensen is seated on the bed with his big laptop tray in the center of the bed. Jared sits the plastic bag down in the middle and divides up their food.
Jensen makes a face when Jared hands him the disposable chopsticks. “Sorry, I forgot to grab yours from downstairs.”
Jensen lightly punches his arm. “I’m kidding. It’s fine.” He takes the plastic lid off of his container of raw fish. “This looks amazing. Thank you.”
“Least I could do,” replied Jared. “You haven’t been able to eat anything but mush for a month.”
“Don’t remind me.” Jensen picks up a piece of salmon and dips it in soy sauce. The look on his face when he takes a bite is almost orgasmic, and damned if it doesn’t make Jared’s cock wake up and take notice. “Oh my God, I missed this.”
Jared’s hibachi steak is nowhere near as exciting, so he makes quick work of it. Jensen’s still having issues with his throat, so Jared finishes long before he does, but Jared doesn’t mind. Watching Jensen is basically a free show. Jared has to admit that he’s a little envious of the care that Jensen’s taking with the yellowfin.
Jensen quirks an eyebrow and taps Jared’s knee. “Quit starin’, it’s creepy.”
“Dude. You are like fucking fellating that yellowfin.”
“Awww, is somebody jealous?” Jensen licks his lips and Jared’s cock strains against the middle seam of his shorts. “You know you’re the only one for me, Jay.”
Jared picks up the tray and gently carries it to the other side of the room. “Prove it.”
Jensen reaches down and grabs the hem of his shirt, but Jared crosses the room and stills his hands. “Let me.”
Jared gently removes Jensen’s shirt and tosses it in the direction of the hamper. When his gaze lands on Jensen’s pajama shorts and the erection that’s forcing them out of shape, he licks his own lips. Jensen doesn’t miss it. He shoves the shorts and his boxer-briefs down to his knees and lets Jared take them all the way off. His cock is already flushed and completely hard, and Jared feels his own erection swell underneath his shorts. He hastily disrobes and drops his own clothes next to Jensen’s. Then he climbs onto the bed and straddles Jensen’s legs, pressing their cocks together in one meaty paw.
“God,” breathes Jensen. “It’s been so fuckin’ long.”
Jared leans down and slides his other hand behind Jensen’s neck, drawing him close and capturing his lips for a bruising kiss. He pulls away quickly, though, not wanting to take the chance of literally taking Jensen’s breath away while he’s still recovering. But Jensen’s apparently just as hungry as Jared is after more than a month away, and Jensen surges back up and thrusts his tongue right into Jared’s mouth as though he owns it. Jared’s tongue tangles with Jensen’s, and fuck, Jensen’s right. It’s been way too long.
The kiss lasts until Jensen pulls back, gasping for breath. Jared mentally curses himself for getting carried away. “Sorry, sorry,” he hisses, rising up on his knees.
“No, it’s—” Jensen coughs lightly. Jared pulls Jensen up to sitting and reaches for the water glass on the nightstand. He thrusts it into Jensen’s hand so hard that a little bit spills over the side.
“Easy, tiger,” Jensen gasps. He does accept the glass and take a long drink. He seems to swallow it easily enough, and Jared feels his racing heart slow down just a bit. “I’m fine. Really.” He takes another sip and sets the glass back down on the nightstand. “Now. Where were we?” He glances down at his own turgid, leaking cock. “Oh, right. That.”
Jensen lies back down on the stacked pillows. “I’m not gonna break, Jay. I swear.”
“I just—”
Jensen covers Jared’s mouth with his hand. “I know you worry. I’m telling you you can stop.” Jensen removes his hand and slides it down to tweak one of Jared’s nipples. “Or I’ll make you stop.”
“And how do you propose to do that?” asks Jared, smirking.
Jensen wraps one hand around Jared’s neck and pulls Jared’s head down until Jared’s lips are brushing Jensen’s hot, hard cock. “You’ve got it from here, I’m sure?”
Jared glances through his eyelashes at Jensen’s own cocky smirk. “Why don’t you explain it to me?”
Jensen sucks in a breath, which catches just a little bit. Jared holds his own breath until Jensen speaks again. “Well, first you want to put those gorgeous fucking lips around the head of my dick.”
Jared does as he’s told. He slides down to the underside of the head and waits for Jensen to instruct him further.
“And now, you’re gonna run the tip of your tongue around the head like you know drives me absolutely fuckin’ insane.”
Jared complies once more, licking the underside of the head with the tip of his tongue, and he feels rather than sees Jensen’s full-body shiver. One of Jared’s hands is clutching Jensen’s dick, and the other slides underneath Jensen’s body to cup his ass. Jensen’s breath catches again, but Jared isn’t worried this time. He knows Jensen’s stronger than Jared gave him credit for, and he wants this with every fiber of his being, just like Jared does. Six weeks is a long damn time.
Jensen drops his head back on the pillow and arches his hips, thrusting his cock even further into Jared’s mouth. “And now, you’re gonna suck me until I forget my own name.”
Jared can’t argue with that. He relaxes his lips a bit and lets Jensen start fucking his mouth, slower than he normally would, but Jared knows he’s doing as much as he’s physically capable of. Jared keeps the tension pretty steady, letting Jensen bring himself to climax, which he does more quickly than he would if he were perfectly healthy. But Jared doesn’t mind that it’s not as long as usual. He knows Jensen’s close to the edge already.
Jensen thrusts as hard as he dares, and Jared just braces his hands and waits for Jensen to signal that he’s close. A few more thrusts, and Jared knows that he’s wearing out. Jared draws back and runs the tip of his tongue over the underside of the head again, and that’s it for Jensen. Jensen comes in thick ropes, and Jared swallows it all without hesitation. God, he’s glad Jensen’s home. Maybe it’s not how he pictured their first time post-hospital, but he has nothing to complain about. Jared lets Jensen pull his cock free of Jared’s lips, and Jared immediately crawls up and cuddles close to Jensen, throwing one arm over his belly and sliding the other underneath the pillow.
“I love you,” murmurs Jensen, soft and thick like he’s about to fall asleep. Jared figures the exertion had to have taken its toll.
“I love you too,” Jared replies, nuzzling the back of Jensen’s neck with the tip of his nose. He feels rather than sees Jensen relax into a light doze.
Jared pulls the bamboo blanket over them both and spoons up against Jensen’s back. Jensen leans back into him and sighs deeply. Jared kisses the back of his head and lets himself fall asleep, perfectly content, holding the man he loves more than anything in the world.

Neil Gaiman and Roz Kaveney at the British Library event Why We Need Fantasy 20.11.2023 :) ❤
Neil: I don't remember if it was you or John M. Ford, the late Mike Ford, who pointed out to me first that there is a thing that I do that I was not aware of doing. And it was.. and I remember this being pointed out to me at the time of the publication of American Gods. Or possibly even before it was published, when I sent it out a manuscript. Because it was pointed out to me that one way that you can tell that you're entering the third act of a Neil Gaiman story is there is always a kiss that sort of ends the second act. And it's never a sort of romantic kiss. It's always a kiss that is unexpected and a little bit wrong, but it symbolizes where we're going to go next.
Roz: Yeah, that was Mike, it's too smart for me.
Neil: That was Mike. And I remember arguing with him and then him pointing out that all the places I'd done it. And then I did it again in the Anansi Boys and didn't realize that I'd done it. And then I forget about this thing. And I saw somebody on Tumblr had found an interview with me from 2002 where I'm talking about this and the kiss, and they're like, 'Still doing it then'.
:)) Yep, Neil is still doing it :D <3 (this is the tumblr post)
You can watch the whole event here :).

hello!! from the love language prompts, maybe 24 or 26 for the library boys?? 👀👀 :)
HI! Thank you for sending the first ask for the food prompts I posted a while ago! I'm gonna post those that I've finished over the course of the day. 24 would be weirdly shaped food and 26 would be breakfast in bed for my lovely library boys. here you go! (betaed by the amazing @ml-nolan)
Murphy wakes to the sound of softly clinking dishware, sleep still heavy in his limbs and eyelids, the smell of Hob's warm body not quite gone but faint. He stretches with a groan, unwilling to open his eyes just yet.
When he inevitably does, blinking, he is greeted by the sight of Hob, dressed in his pants and the robe Murphy has already labelled Hob's in his head, the lace-trimmed satin gown that showcases Hob's soft, furred body with a different kind of softness, sleek and shiny like water. It suits him very well.
He's carrying two things; a fond grin and a tray with a big plate and two mugs. The smell of eggs and toast and coffee hits Murphy all at once, and his stomach growls. Hob chuckles.
“Have you finished stretching? Wouldn't want to risk this five star breakfast landing on the floor, you know.” The humorous slant of Hob's mouth turns a little self-deprecating, and Murphy wonders why. He's usually an excellent cook.
Murphy sits up and nods, eager. “Yes. Thank you for making breakfast.”
When Hob sits down at the edge of the bed, setting the tray down between them, he can see exactly why.
After a small, careful silence, Murphy asks, “What… is that?” It looks like some weird sort of French toast, but there's too much egg, the edges of it spilled over and folded onto the toast, while the bread is oddly shaped, almost mangled. There's also no sugar. Or cinnamon.
Hob clears his throat. “Well… I wanted to do a thing I've seen on the Internet. You know, you take a cookie cutter and then put a fried egg into a fun shaped hole in the toast?” He rubs his earlobe and then scratches through his hair, dishevelling his already sleep-tousled braid further. “Well, turns out it's not as easy as it looks.”
Murphy keeps quiet once more, and then, finally says, “I am not going to lie and say it looks wonderful, but I am sure it will taste good.”
Hob snorts with laughter and then pokes his tongue out at him. “How gracious of you, my lord. Will you require a fork or is His Grace going to use his fingers?”
Raising one eyebrow at him, Murphy picks up a stray piece of egg with two fingers and eats it. Still chewing, he tells Hob, “You can rest easy, I am afraid I left my manners at the library yesterday.”
“Well then, let’s hope nobody picks them up accidentally,” Hob deadpans with a twinkle in his eyes. “They’re terrible, anyways.”

I'm thinking of making an account for original fiction, and I'm considering Wattpad and FictionPress (which is the sister of fanfiction.net, that old warhorse). I'm not sure who would enjoy reading my works, but if you like LGBTQ+ fantasy adventure and romance, please consider giving it a look.
I'll post the link to my work when I create it, and I hope some of you will read. A lot of it is in the draft stages, so critiques will be welcome. You'll get to read about my library boys and also another work including dragons, romance, fighting genocide, and ousting the corrupt for positions of power while helping those who are being hurt by them.

Big Mama must have lost some serious standing in the yokai underworld because it’s gotten apparent that she keeps being beaten by a small group of teenagers and the occasional rat man, and when it’s not them then she’s taking L’s from her own schemes working against her.
And in the ensuing power vacuum, the Hamatos accidentally become the most feared crime family known to all the big bads of the Hidden City.
After all, they’ve publicly outplayed Big Mama multiple times, a couple of them have taken out the heads of two of the most well known criminal organizations, one took out Heinous Green, two are responsible for the destruction of Witch Town, they have ties to both the infamous Baron Draxum and Captain Piel, they won the Doom Dome death race, they’re Battle Nexus Champions, they’ve displayed insane feats of power and defeated impossibly strong enemies, most of them have been to jail, and they regularly mingle with humans.
You can just imagine the notoriety they’d accumulate from word of mouth alone.

Objectively, You’re Awesome (Library Boys, 31/?)
Jensen has his interview with the Middletown Library’s Board of Directors at 10:00 am, and Jared knows he’s freaking out. He’s doing it over Zoom, and he’ll be able to type answers to their questions, but Jensen’s worried that the Board won’t like doing it that way, and they’ll pass him up for someone who did a normal interview.
“I don’t think you have anything to worry about,” Jared tries to assure him. Jensen’s sitting on the couch, still in his pajamas, drinking a cup of hot tea that Jared made for him. “I can’t believe there’s anyone who applied who’s more qualified and has more experience than you. I feel like we would know about someone like that.”
Jensen nods, but he doesn’t look convinced. Jared pats his knee. “Just be yourself. You got this. You are absolutely the best person for the job—just be confident and show them what you’ve got.”
Jensen picks up the dry-erase board. I know you’re right, he writes. I just need this so badly. He shows it to Jared and then erases it to have more room to write. I don’t want to seem desperate.
“Look, you’re one hell of a librarian. You’re a great supervisor, you have excellent people skills, and you have extensive experience in crisis management,” says Jared. “You’ve got what they need and then some. So just tell them that.”
Jensen nods. Jared takes a sip of his own coffee and eats the other half of a bagel he toasted earlier. “You need something to eat. Do you want oatmeal or scrambled eggs?”
Jensen writes oatmeal, please on the board. Jared goes out into the kitchen and makes Jensen some instant brown sugar cinnamon oatmeal. He slices a banana and puts it on top, then feeds the end to Max, who’s just waking up. Jared gives Jensen the bowl and then takes Max out on his leash. He plans to walk Max around the complex while Jensen’s doing his interview so Jensen won’t be distracted, so he takes Max in after just a few minutes.
Jensen eats slowly, and after fifteen minutes he’s finished half the oatmeal and all of the banana slices. He hands the bowl to Jared, indicating that he’s done. Jared isn’t happy—Jensen needs to eat to keep his strength up. But he knows Jensen’s too wired to eat, so he lets it go. He scrapes it out in the kitchen and rinses it off before popping it in the dishwasher. He’s so grateful to live in a house with a dishwasher now. His old apartment didn’t have one, and he hated washing dishes by hand. Now he occasionally washes a skillet or saucepan, but most other stuff goes in the dishwasher, and it saves him so much time.
There’s still about an hour before Jensen has to log into Zoom, so Jared picks up the TV remote. “You want to listen to the new ‘You’re Wrong About’ podcast?”
Jensen nods. Jared pulls up Spotify on the Roku box and chooses the new episode, which appears to be part 2 of 3. It’s about the book Go Ask Alice, which Jared has heard of but didn’t know a lot about before the first podcast. Jensen knew more about it because it had been a topic in one of his library science classes due to its unique and oft-changed classification within the Library of Congress catalogue. It was originally categorized as nonfiction despite actually being fictional, but that controversy hasn’t come up yet.
They have to turn it off during the conclusion because Jensen has to log in for his interview. Jared hugs Jensen and gives him a short, sweet kiss. “Good luck. Not that you need it. You got this.”
Jensen nods and takes a deep breath. Jared goes and gets Max leashed up and ready to go. He passes by Jensen and squeezes his shoulder. “I love you. Kick it in the ass.”
Jensen logs into Zoom on his laptop and mouths “I love you” to Jared. Jared blows him a kiss and heads out the front door with Max.
The complex isn’t that big, but the whole thing is one big hill. Jared takes Max up the hill to the stop sign and lets him sniff around behind the condos at that end. Then they go down the hill and around the cul-de-sac, where they encounter two tiny terriers. Max startles when they both start barking furiously at him. Jared quickly guides Max across the street to the mailboxes and kneels down beside him. He pets him and speaks softly to him until the terriers go on their way down to Presidents Drive. Jared takes Max back up the hill and around the dead end until he spots the terriers going back into their townhouse. Then he takes Max back down around the condos next to theirs. He checks his watch. It’s been about 25 minutes, so he probably needs to stay out another 20 minutes or so to be safe. He takes Max all the way down the Presidents Drive hill and back up. Luckily, they don’t meet any other dogs.
Jensen has his laptop closed when Jared and Max enter the house. “How did it go?” asks Jared.
Jensen responds with a thumbs-up and a smile. It’s not his thousand watt special, but it’s encouraging.
Jared gives Max a treat and lets him slurp up some water. “I knew you could do it,” Jared tells Jensen. “I’m glad it went well.”
Jensen writes on the board. They said they should decide next week.
“Good, that means you won’t have to wait too long.” Jared sits down next to Jensen on the couch and puts his arm around his shoulders. “They’d have to be crazy to pass you up.”
Jensen grins and erases the board. You’re biased.
“I can be objective,” protests Jared. “And objectively, you’re fucking awesome.”
Jensen leans up and kisses Jared. “Thank you,” he whispers.
“You’re welcome,” Jared replies, and kisses him again, short and sweet.

my library has a page where you can request titles to be added to the catalogue, and my requests have never, never been turned down
like, obscure book on irish mythology? added! cookbook written by a robot? hell yeah! just season 3 of a 1970s detective series, on DVD? sure, why not!
I don't know if it's that a librarian has decided to humor me, or if my library is particularly well-funded (I hope so; I love my library), but no matter what I request, they buy a copy and add it to the catalogue.
...so now, as I type in a suggestion for a queer romance with a pretty boy on the cover, I can only hope that luck is still with me
