Hello, and welcome to The Gay Disney Games, where we pit creations of the homophobic company against each other to see who gives off the most queer vibes. I’m planning to hold a few different tournaments over the summer, but the one I’m planning to start with is…

What is the most queer-coded Disney movie?

Rules:

It’s not just gay vibes! Anything under the lgbtq umbrella is good! (ie. Mulan being trans coded)

Only Disney and Pixar movies! So no Marvel or Star Wars or whatever else

No bigotry of any kind- especially homophobia, transphobia, or aphobia (this is an lgbtq tourney it’s an all or nothing deal)

Sequels and remakes are able to be submitted, but the spot will likely go to whichever movie in the franchise received the most submission

Beauty and the Beast (1991) is already in, since it’s what inspired me to make the tournament, so you don’t have to submit it!

"Oh, fuck. Its a human." The creature in front of you blinks, once, twice, before poking your shoulders. "Yup, definitely a human."

Name

"My...name? You... want it? I mean, sure, cool I guess. Adin or River works fine, but if you wanna call me something different I could care less unless its my deadname. Which out of like 40 billion names I'd doubt ya'd guess." The creature shrugged, its black, almost as black as a void, tail sways behind it, as if swatting an invisible fly.

"What a weird question." The creature mutters, a bit dumbfounded before shrugging, not caring enough to judge. "Eighteen, shouldn't matter all that much though, now should it?" The creature tsked, looking away.

River paused. "He/him, they/them, or it/its." They scratched the back of their head, scoffing a bit. "I'm a guy but I know for some people thats hard to get through their skulls, so if ya wanna call me an individual, or lord forbid a thing then I could care less." It sighed. "Just don't call me a girl." River rolled his eyes. "Any use of she/her in reference to myself, or calling me a girl in a serious manner will be getting you blocked." Their tail fluffed up, obviously pissed at the even thought of it.

Anyone who violates and tries to get into such a discussion will be blocked. Or given a warning if close friend, soft blocks if neccessary, before finally hard blocking. Thank you." Its cat ear twitches briefly.

They blinked once, a slow one. "Oh nice, a random curveball. @definesanity , @archaicanathema , @gunterdon , @unkownknowledge , @pale-value , amongst others are all good friends of mine. I'm willing to have more though, so don't hesitate to ask." It waved its hand lazily.

They shrugged, unbothered by the long list. Very few were people he liked romantically, most were just kickass people Adin loved looking up content for.

What this post is about

Should I watch yu yu hakusho

I like yugioh and I see you’ve drawn stuff for both so I’m wondering if they’re similar vibes

kinda sorta but also not really the same. its very much a typical shonen where theres bukding friendships & fighting (yyh set the stage for battle tournaments in manga/anime p much) so obvs its a different pace & much different than from ygo. yyh is a rare series where i recommend BOTH the sub & dub (the dub is especially very enjoyable). the characters are very well fleshed out as well (including the girls !)

theres is a good about of death in the series (nothing crazy gorey, typical pg 13 anime violence) if youre looking for something on par with ygo anime violence this isnt your series, unless you read the ygo manga lol

there is one part of the series i always put a warning out tho bc yyh Is a 90s show & times were different. its just a small part in the yukina rescue arc where they out a trans woman (a chapter in the manga, an ep in the anime). togashi has come a long way in writing his lgbtq characters tho so dont worry sm

tldr: yyh >>> ygo

Anime Magic 2022: Friday

Another long-delayed con writeup. We hit up Anime Magic in August! This writeup has been lingering on my desktop because I just kept forgetting to post.

We drove up Thursday night, but thanks to work, we got into the area too late for early badge pickup. So, we instead went Friday morning, before the convention opened.

The line was short and the pace was reasonably quick – we got in and out in approximately 15 minutes. Since we did this at about 830, this left us with about an hour and a half to kill before we could do anything else convention-related.

One thing that disappointed us with the registration area was that Anime Magic only provided a physical copy of the convention map. They did not provide a physical copy of the schedule.

On the one hand, they did announce that the digital copy would be the only one available. On the other, there were complaints ahead of con that the schedule was not particularly user-friendly on any platform, and so folks had hoped the con would change its mind. I realize it’s probably a cost-saving measure to not provide physical copies of a schedule, but this doesn’t feel attendee-friendly.

When we were able to go to the convention proper, we started off our day with the panel LGBTQ+ Representation in Anime and VO w/ Kayleigh McKee and Jonah Scott. I clearly need to check out more newer anime, as I feel I’m increasingly unfamiliar with the guests at cons. A fair amount of the conversation during the panel revolved around Beastars, which I haven’t yet watched. But I would like to!

Also, my angle in the panel was waaaay too bad for photos, as you can see.

After the panel, it was time to browse the dealer’s hall, artist alley, and take in the itasha car show. This year, the show acted as the divider between the artists and dealers.

We did some light shopping after taking in the car show. Got some snacks from the Hello Tokyo booth, as they’re very reasonably priced.

We headed back to the hotel to put away our purchases and grab a quick lunch. We then explored the gaming areas of the convention, from the tabletop room where we did some shopping and walked away with some recommendations, to the foam fighting and the arcade area. There were also axe throwing, laser tag, and card tournaments for those who were interested.

We caught Brian Beacock’s Behind the Voice panel at 1530. We’ve seen him a few times before, but it’s always entertaining. There’s just something about the story about the Barney suit that doesn’t stop being funny.

We teamed up with @shbumi after that. The three of us wandered for a bit and then took in most of the Heartstrings: Idol Magic! Performances before splitting up for dinner.

We wanted to be sure that we ate and then had plenty of time to get into line for Oriana’s Drag Race. We were lucky enough to be near the start of the line – only a few spaces in.

It was while waiting in line for Drag Race that we learned that Anime Magic had been having technical problems and so the scheduled start time of 2030 was slightly up in the air. Thankfully, the event didn’t start more than a few minutes behind schedule.

There were many talented performers. Last year’s winner was finally able to perform and damn if they didn’t being their A game. As did all of this year’s contestants and the other performers.

When the show was over, we walked @shbumi back to her hotel so that I could borrow a vest for Saturday’s cosplay. She was over at the Aloft and I have to say, if we aren’t able to get one of the 3 main hotels for ACEN 2023, the Aloft doesn’t seem like too bad a spot to hole up.

And that ended our Friday.

Personal Opinion: If you’ve ever played any trading card game ever (especially Magic: The Gathering) then this is absolutely the book for you. Enter the world of Odyssey, a popular card game played by nerds all over the country. Two such nerds are Conrad and Alden who need to win a tournament at one of the biggest conventions for different reasons. As rivals on battlefield, sorta friends on the road, and possibly something more by the end, you won’t be able to put down this masterpiece by Annabeth Albert!

Couple Classification: Conrad X Alden = Jock/Nerd X Nerd

Likes:

- The main couple had a lot of disagreements throughout the book but they were resolved so quickly. Conrad and Alden both realized how they’d misjudged the other for years and once it became clear they presented themselves a certain way, they changed. Upon learning that Alden couldn’t pick up social cues very well because of his disability, Conrad adjusted the way he reacted to Alden and became more patient with him. It was very sweet to watch that development happen for their relationship. Likewise, once Alden saw the way Conrad still struggled with his sexuality, despite being in a safe space like Arthur’s game store, he stopped seeing Conrad as this irresponsible party animal. He saw another man struggling to survive and felt selfish for not trying to see what Conrad’s been through. But they never made it a competition on who was suffering worse and just let their relationship blossom in a natural way.

- The banter evolved in such a cute way too! Alden had a lot of trouble interpreting it as just friendly jabs so when Conrad switched it to flirty teasing to make it extra obvious that he wasn’t trying to be mean, it really affected him in the best possible way.

- The “one bed” trope came in clutch. I mean, when they just laid there, holding hands, I felt my heart squeeze so hard! It was so cute and wholesome, I truly adored it. And their date under the stars too! Ugh, I just love them so much together and not at each other’s throats.

Dislikes:

- Overwhelmingly white. I really expected a multiracial cast but all of the main characters were just white. I mean, at least they’re all queer on some level. And I think Maxine (Conrad’s landlord and former professor) is black? Not too sure. Professor Tuttle at least had a hispanic husband which is adorable. I love old couples. But still, overwhelmingly white. And male. And what are the chances that all three of the cis guys have sisters? No brothers at all? If the main couple wasn’t so cute, my eyes would have glazed over completely. At least Alden is both Jewish and neurodivergent? I do wish he at least wore glasses too like the drawing on the cover seemed to suggest.

- Payton isn’t really a good friend. I mean, I’m sure they mean well and all but man, I wish they didn’t all dogpile on Alden like that. It just sucks as a socially anxious person that Conrad, Jasper, and Payton all treated him that way in the beginning. And Conrad was not helping by withholding all his baggage. I understand why, he didn’t want pity and all that. But why go for the impression that you’re partying and dating when you can be honest?

- Speaking of which, the start of this was rocky. The enemies part of enemies-to-lovers was just so hard to get through because it’s so difficult to see their chemistry at first. When they had that final match during the tournament and kept worrying about facing off, that was the good shit. But the lead-up for it was rough. At least the pay-off was worth it.
