Summary: After your best friend convinces you to go to a Corroded Coffin show at The Hideout, secrets come to light and a not so secret crush that you’ve been trying to push away has nowhere to go.

Robin met up with you after classes got out for the day, dodging the stampede of students surging through the halls at a relentless attempt to try to escape the prison that is Hawkins High. Another rough day was in the bag as you walked home with your best friend. You weren’t bullied, but you also weren’t one of the popular kids, you were just there. As bland as it seemed, you liked the fact that no one really paid attention to you, or at least that’s what you assumed. The walk home was pretty normal, talking about classes, music, and anything that popped into your minds. All was going well until silence was broken.

“Oh come on, it’s so obvious that he likes you. I mean, did you see him jump up on the table today during lunch? He was obviously being erratic to get your attention.” Robin has always tried to convince you that the infamous freak Eddie Munson was into you, but you just weren’t buying it.

“Dude, he’s always like that, anyways didn't you see how he acted when those cheerleaders walked by? I’m obviously not his type.” You playfully punched her arm in an attempt to shake the feeling of jealousy bubbling in your gut.

The conversation ends with an eye roll and smile from Robin as you part ways, and continue to your respective houses. It’s not uncommon for you two to bicker like that. Some may see it as a red flag, but you and Robin have been friends for so long that you guys coined it as “friendly bullying.”

After getting inside and locking the door behind you, you trotted up the stairs into your room. Mom works late and dad is out on a business trip, so evenings like these weren’t uncommon. Plopping your bookbag next to the full length mirror hung on your closet door, you hop onto your unmade bed and sigh to yourself. Maybe Robin was right, maybe he caught you staring once and decided to turn it into a whole show. Your rambling thoughts were cut short when you heard the phone ring. With a loud groan, you make your way out of your room and to the phone in the hallway. Before you would even state who you were, Robin was on the other end giggling, something she did when coming up with mischief.

“Dude, spit it out already” Robin’s giggling is contagious, but that doesn’t stop you from wanting to know what the hell is going on.

“Okay okay, so don’t ask me how I know this information, but Corroded Coffin is playing at the Hideout this Tuesday and I think you should go.” Hearing Robin’s smile through the phone, you shut the offer down immediately.

“Absolutely not. Nope. Not a chance. I’m not going to potentially embarrass myself in front of him. Plus, who knows, maybe they have fangirls that go to all their gigs that are way hotter than me!”

“Come on y/n, I’ll be your wing-man, er, wing-girl I guess. Anyways, it’ll be fun! What else do you have planned huh?” The silence from your end spoke for you. “Exactly, now we both know you want to, are you really gonna let some stupid thoughts stop you from seeing Eddie play live? Obviously not, cuz I’m not scared to drag you there. Okay byeeeeee!”

Before you could retort, the line disconnected and the decision was made for you. Still processing what you’ve gotten yourself into, you waltz back into your room and sit back on your bed. Pulling out one of your favorite movies, you switch it on and try to ignore the dread lingering in the back of your mind.

It was Tuesday afternoon and the only thing on your mind was anxiety and the “what if’s” of tonight's event. Getting snapped out of your thoughts, your chemistry teacher decides to lecture you on how important it is to pay attention when there are harmful chemicals around. You roll your eyes knowing the only chemicals around were salt, vinegar, and some alka seltzer tablets.

Thankfully it was your last class of the day so as soon as the bell rang you were the first one out of the classroom and somehow managed to beat the swarm of students. There was no way in hell you were going to miss Eddie’s gig. Waiting for Robin near the bike rack, you spot Eddie hopping into his van along with the rest of his bandmates. Thankfully he didn’t catch you staring, but Gareth did. God, he’s always catching you red handed somehow.

Robin finally jogs up to you as you watch their van leave your line of sight and grabs your hand, pulling you towards the sidewalk. You zone out to Robin’s normal blabbering, wondering what you should wear tonight. She doesn’t mind it though.

Stopping in your tracks and looking over at Robin quizzically, you ask the question that has been on your mind all day. “Hey, I thought you didn’t like big crowds and loud spaces. I feel like a bar is the opposite of what you’d want to do during a school night.”

Robin just chuckles and glances over at you “I mean, it's not that I don’t like loud places, it's that I’ve never had a reason to attend such events. Also, have you forgotten that I’m in band? I’m literally surrounded by instruments blowing out my eardrums, I think I can handle it.”

You nod and continue on your way back to your house in unison. Since Robin doesn’t really have anyone to impress, her words not yours, she invites herself over as you get ready for the night. Panic begins to set in as you both enter your disaster of a room. Taking a seat on the orange bean bag in the corner, you start rummaging through your drawers, trying to find the perfect outfit.

After what seems to be hours of frustration and trying on different combos, you settle on an Iron Maiden band tee, fishnets under a pair of black short shorts, and a comfy pair of old high top converse. Since you assume it’s going to get hot in the bar, you opt for some waterproof eyeliner. Drawing on a dramatic wing, adding blush and some lip gloss, you turn around to see Robin flipping through a magazine from your night stand.

“Ahem?” You loudly clear your throat and Robin responds by whipping her head up to look at you. “So, how do I look?”

“You look amazing! Oh my god he’s gonna be head over heels when he sees you in the crowd!” Robin jumps up in excitement, accidentally stumbling over a shoe in the process.

After she regains her composure, you both burst into laughter and lounge around talking about anything until it’s time to head to the Hideout.

Since Robin can’t drive and you don’t have a car, you grab your bikes and head out. Once getting to the venue and locking your bikes up, you guys walk into The Hideout only to be greeted by the smell of smoke, whiskey, and sweat. Although the atmosphere was thick and hazy, your breathing only faltered once you caught a glimpse of Eddie and his band setting up. Robin nudges you further into the bar, since you stopped dead in your tracks which ended up blocking the doorway.

While the band is busy setting up and tuning their instruments, you head over to the bar. You and Robin intended on just sitting there, but eventually the bartender waltzes over to the both of you.

“What can I getcha tonight? We have a list of tap beers on this here menu as well as some cocktails.” She smiles and grabs a towel to dry off a whiskey glass

“Oh, we’re not 21 yet. I’ll have a Shirley Temple though!” You respond with a smile and look over at Robin, waiting for her response. “Oh uh, I’ll just get whatever she’s having.” Robin nods and starts to play with one of the rings on her left hand.

“Two Shirley Temples comin right up!” With a toothy grin, the bartender gets busy with making your drinks, while Gareth gets busy trying to tell Eddie about your presence. Of course he gets pissy, once Eddie is in the middle of something, no one dares to interrupt him. Eventually after a minute of bickering between the two, Gareth finally points over to where you’re sitting and it all clicks in Eddie’s brain.

“Holy shit, she’s actually here.” Turning around and gathering the band in a huddle, his pep talk begins “Okay guys, y/n is here tonight so there can’t be any malfunctions or slip-ups. Understood?” A nod and hum emitted from the four band members and showtime was only moments away. Turning back to the crowd of drunks and a couple younger moms, Eddie scans the floor to find you twirled in your seat, admiring him.

Once locking eyes, you both blush and divert your attention. Somehow the floor and ceiling seemed way more interesting than it did a few moments ago. To calm his upheaval of nerves, Eddie grabs a cigarette and lighter, and heads to the door. As he’s passing, you can only smile and wave which he responds with a smirk and wink. Although the gesture was small, both of you had butterflies filling your stomachs. You’ve always wondered where he got his confidence, unbeknownst to you, it was a ruse to keep him from making a complete fool of himself.

Robin obviously saw the exchange between the two of you and smirked to herself “Told ya, he’s obviously into you.” Rolling your eyes, you try to logically explain away what had happened. “He's probably like this with all of the girls at his shows.” Taking a sip of your drink, Eddie hops back onstage and the show begins.

As the night progressed, you began to feel less anxious and actually started to enjoy yourself as well as the music. Frequent glances were shared between you and Eddie, but that only made you happier that Robin had convinced you to come along. By the end of the set list, you were on the floor dancing and occasionally head banging with Robin. Eddie closed off the show with a thank you message and before you knew it, the band was packing up.

You made sure to catch Eddie before he hopped in his van and headed back to the trailer park, but to your surprise, he was the one that came up to you. Robin excused herself to the restroom, giving you a look that lets you know full well she’s just giving the two of you space. Eddie took a seat next to you at the bar to catch his breath. His messy hair is all over the place and bangs sticking to his sweaty forehead. You couldn’t help but blush, knowing that this is the closest you’ve ever been to him.

Finally snapping out of your trance, you broke the silence. “That was amazing dude!”

“Aww thanks, I’m surprised nothing went wrong. The equipment we have and the sound machines here are super cheap.” He glances over at you then calls over the bartender to ask for a cold beer. “So, what made a pretty girl like you decide to come to a show like this?”

You were taken aback by his passing compliment, and took a second to collect your thoughts, hoping the lighting was dim enough to hide your reddening face. “Oh uhm, yeah my parents are out of town and I had nothing to do so I decided why not check out the local band.”

A smile creeped onto Eddie’s face. “Local band huh,” He took a swig of the beer that was set in front of him and continued on “I’m more used to people calling us an anomaly, so I’ll take that as a compliment.” You assure that it was a compliment and bask in a moment of comfortable silence. That was until Robin comes back over and joins the two of you at the bar.

Setting your empty glass down, Robin lets you know that it’s past her curfew and we needed to head out. While she headed out to unlock her bike and wait for you, you and Eddie exchanged goodbyes.

Before you were able to push open the door though, he called out to you “Hey, I didn’t get your name”

“Oh shit sorry, I’m y/n” you respond with a smile, and he nods back “Cool, I’ll see you around school y/n.” A grin plastered itself to his face as he watched you wave goodbye and head out into the night.

The bike ride home was full of laughter and “I told you so’s.” As you and Robin parted ways, the night came to a close and you were content. It was late so you didn't bother to change into your pajamas as you set your alarm and plopped into bed. All the adrenaline wore off and you drifted off to sleep.

Thoughts after 1 episode of...

Continuing "the further (ironic) adventures of Televinita Literally Doesn't Know Anything On Television Anymore," last week a new blogger I follow declared this FOX show I’ve never heard of her favorite of 2021, and upon seeing a cast list with 3 of my veteran TV faves (particularly PIPER PERABO, MY LOVE) + “a show about making a [fictional] dance reality show,” I immediately threw myself into it.

I ADORED what I saw, so I’m going to take a moment before moving on to jot down some thoughts.

(Gonna make a concentrated effort to teach myself character names as I go, too)

Part One: Character Impressions

1. Oh my god I love Scott Foley as the heartless drama-driven producer. (Nick?) Although I shouldn’t have led with that phrasing because I want to say exactly the same about all of the following people:

2. Simone Recasner as Gabby. I’ve never seen her before but she has INSTANT screen charisma and also is incredibly pretty. How is she crowding out Piper for Resident Screen Beauty Queen.

3. Piper Perabo as Paula, OBVIOUSLY; we’ll come back to this.

4. Mallory Jensen, a.k.a. Our Beloved Queen Madalena from Galavant, as the somehow even meaner judge/choreographer Monica.

5. John Rudnitsky, another new-to-me face, as sad-sack Mike.

WHO’S THE HOT FOOTBALL DUDE AND WHAT IS THIS MAGIC HE’S WORKING ON ME, THE GAL WHO NEVER CARES ABOUT ATHLETES. Am I subconsciously now primed to love football players after spending the first trimester of 2021 watching The Game and the last one watching Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders?? But dude is ripped, and once again I did NOT think I was the kind of person who fell for muscular broad-shouldered dues, but this one’s really working for me. Also I like that he’s got such an affable personality and notably did not take one look at Gabby and go “girl plz.” The rage issues do not have me so much as batting an eye because frankly, that’s just me on an average Tuesday, only it’s through a computer screen instead of smashing jerks’ windshields in person.

edit: oh right, his name. Apparently, Ser’Darius Blain as Reggie Sadler.

Second-tier love but I think she’ll grow on me: Teri Polo as Julia, and also her entire family, from Hey, It’s That Guy Seth Morris to her suuuuper pretty daughters (who are real-life sisters according to IMDB; let me see them more!)

Seems to be more of a guest star, but don’t let me forget Gabby’s mom! She is SO SWEET.

Honestly there is not one person who enrages me on sight so far, and that just...never happens on TV shows these days. The exotic dancer and the incestuously-dancing twins are probably lowest on my totem pole, but only because of the inevitable Omega rule. I’ve watched shows where I disliked almost half the cast more than I dislike them.

Part II: Story Thoughts

I love the premise of this show.

Really like that I have suffered nothing even close to a sex scene so far. I don’t trust this pattern to hold, but it’s a better sign than not that they didn’t count on that aspect to bring viewers to their pilot.

Oh, Mike. I have all the sympathy, while also understanding why his wife left him? Love this state of things for me!

Also love his supportive buddy group.

And even though I have decided I would currently be just fine with him saving his marriage because his ex is cute as a button and I want her to have her happy-guy husband back if she wants him, OF COURSE I AM SHIPPING HIM & PAULA LIKE A MADWOMAN.

The fire escape dance-flirting was SO CUTE. Are you kidding me??? Entire rom-coms are BUILT on this! (also: yes plz to the “technically she fired him but neither of them knows that...but the producers know” drama.)

I also feel like Paula’s breast cancer backstory is going to come back in dramatic fashion and I’m here for it.

My heart’s just gonna be over here breaking for Julia, if that’s okay. I’m not there yet, but in 10-15 years I will be, and I can already empathize with her trying to compete for social media followers with people half her age, and kinda feeling like you’re still in your 20s/disconcerted by the reality of the world not seeing you that way. I am personally offended every day that I now look too old to be a traditional college student.

I feel very little about Justin as a character so far, but that guy can dance.

My heart is all the way broken for Gabby losing out on her dreams for a smaller life as a teen mom, and I want to hear more about the depression that caused her to cut ties with her best friend ("I couldn’t be anyone’s friend” oh hatpin to the heart, I’ve felt that before), right before he needed her because Homophobe Dad. I hope there are flashbacks.

Speaking of sad things about Gabby...

“She’s going to fall in love with him, and he’s going to break her heart.” Oh I am MAD that you pegged me for exactly what I want to happen (the first half anyway), and also what I agree will make for good TV and keep me watching. So I guess I’m also a little impressed?

Gonna measure my expectations and just quietly ship Gabby/Reggie in my own way so that nothing can disappoint me. They have such good buddy chemistry! I would be fine with that! (I say...but we also know how long that tends to lasts with me.)

But seriously, it has been like a YEAR or maybe TWO since I even cared about new TV characters enough to think of them outside of watching the show, let alone felt genuinely shippy about them; I am so thrilled.

hi!! could i plz get a regular matchup? my pronouns are she/they and preferably a male student plz :D i’m an infp (although i feel like i fluctuate between infp and enfp a lot HAHAH) and i would consider myself pretty outgoing! i’m kind of shy when i meet people and i have the tendency to just stay tucked away unless i feel comfortable/ feel like we’re clicking. when i click with someone though i go balls to the fucking walls LMFAO. i really love to garden and roller skate and i’d love to be a kindergarten teacher when i get older! i would consider myself a very empathic (and highly sensitive) person, and i think my two most prominent traits are my kindness and my extremely terrible sense of humor!

i’m 5’8 (which makes me kinda insecure cuz i hate my height 😭) and i have have long blonde hair! i’m tan, have blue eyes, and i’m a little “curvier” than most which ads to my insecurity, but i try the best that i can to not let it effect me too much! i also cannot leave the house without false eyelashes on and i truly believe that it’s my fatal flaw.

im also super into ballets, classical music, and horror movies! i swear to god i go harder to classical music than any other type of music HAHAHAHA. i genuinely cannot stand boring or mean spirited people. one of my biggest pet peeves is assholes and dry texters LOLZ. if u don’t respond to each of my texts with a “!!!!!!!!!” ion want u 🙄.

Broadway Baby || Shawn Mendes

Description: You have known Shawn Mendes for nine years. And he has been a pain in your ass the entire time. NYC isn’t big enough for the two of you, and your hometown certainly isn’t either. (aka broadway!Shawn)

A/N: I thought of this au out of nowhere and I was like wait a minute....that could be really good. SO here we are! And I think it is pretty good! And yes the Jordan I mention a few times is Jordan Fischer. I am a whore for that man. ALSO just a disclaimer: I know absolutely nothing about the technicality or broadway or new york or anything so plz just pretend thank you

Maybe going to your high school’s five-year reunion at some dive bar two hours away from where you currently lived and down the street from your old high school could have been the worst place to be on a Saturday night in May.

You whisked the wine in your glass around as you watched it arch up the glass, threatening to spill out with each turn. The light above you flickered every few moments, and you couldn’t tell if the reason for your forming headache was the wine or the light or the fact that you were at your reunion. Or maybe all three.

You leaned against a table with two people from your homeroom, both of them going on and on about their current fifth year of college they were finishing up. One was in a sorority and the other was the president of his frat. You could’ve seen that coming from your freshman year of high school.

You occasionally chimed in every few moments just to look interested because you really didn’t have anyone else to talk to. You’d gotten here just a little too early since you had to take the drive and overestimated how long it actually took. Everyone who was eager for the reunion was here. Which meant everyone you did not want to see.

Your friends planned on coming later, and in reality, you should have just stopped at their house before coming but last minute decided against it. You didn’t really see your high school friends as often as you once thought you would. But life got in the way. While everyone else tended to stay in the small town, you were one of the few who made it out to New York City just two hours away. You had a great job, you bought a house and had a dog. It couldn’t get much better for you.

So, why you thought you would want to relive your high school days for a night? You still don’t know what you were thinking.

“[Y/N]?” Eli said from next to you as you blinked a few times before looking at him.

“How’s the big city?” He said with his smile that actually was too white.

“Good! Really good!” You said with a smile before you took a sip, hoping he wouldn’t ask any more questions.

“Do you ever run into Shawn?” Kelly asked from the other side of you.

The name itself sent shivers down your spine. Not good ones.

“Nope,” you said with a pop in your “p” as you downed your glass.

“You guys were so close in high school,” Eli said.

You held back a laugh as you glanced back over at him, “No, we weren’t.”

“Well you were the leads in all the musicals together,” Eli replied.

“That means we were forced to act like we liked each other onstage. We were good actors. That’s why we were the leads,” you tried to say as casually as possible without making it obvious that your blood was boiling.

“Could have fooled me,” Kelly taunted as she sipped at her drink.

You stifled an eye roll as you thought about what the best time would be to sneak away and get more wine.

“Speak of the devil,” Eli said as you followed his eyes across the room.

Your eyes briefly met with Shawn’s as he sauntered into the bar with more confidence than he should be allowed to have.

You heard Kelly sigh from next to you as she rested her head on her hand.

You could throw up.

By the time you looked up again, he was walking right towards you.

So, now was the right time to get another glass.

You turned around and waved the bartender down for some wine and then thought maybe two glasses was a better idea but didn’t want to look as trashy as you felt right now being in the same room as Shawn again.

By the time you turned around with your wine, Shawn was deep in conversation with Eli as Kelly lovingly listened in.

You took a quick scan of the room, praying there could be someone else you could talk to. Most of the people you really didn’t care for or barely remembered. You spotted a few football players you had known since Kindergarten and hadn’t seen in a while.

You were about to cross the room to them when you heard Eli say, “[Y/N]’s right here.”

Shawn looked up and smirked as his eyes met yours. There goes your escape.

You smiled sweetly as you made your way back in between Eli and Kelly and a comfortable distance from Shawn.

“Hi, Shawn.”

“[Y/N], good to see you,” he said, the damn smirk not leaving his face.

“You too,” you mumbled from the rim of your glass.

“Heard you’re over at Samson Management now? You know Jordan?”

You nodded your head and leaned on the table again, “Yeah, I work with Jordan pretty often. He’s fantastic.”

Shawn looked over to Kelly, turning on his charm as he said, “Jordan’s the lead right now in the musical I’m in.”

It took every ounce of you to not roll your eyes and say something snarky.

“You mean the musical you’re an understudy for?”

It didn’t work.

Shawn cocked an eyebrow at you and his smile faltered as you foiled his face he was putting up for everyone.

“Yes, [Y/N], that would be the one,” he said slowly.

“Mhm,” you mumbled.

“Anyway, I’m in Dear Evan Hansen, and Jordan plays Evan right now. We’re pretty good friends, and he’s managed by the company [Y/N] interns for,” he said simply.

“I’m not an intern,” you said calmly.

“You were.”

“When I was in college, now I’m a junior manager,” you said, your grip on your glass getting dangerously harder.

“Hm, whoops,” he said before taking a drink of his beer.

You could cut the tension with a knife as Eli and Kelly shared looks.

“Who are you managed by again, Shawn?” You asked.

If looks could kill, you’d be dead.

“I’m in between managers.”

“Isn’t that what people say when they were fired from a job? That they’re in-between jobs?” You said with a quiet laugh.

You could practically see the steam threatening to spill from Shawn’s ears.

“Things weren’t working out,” he said carefully.

“I’m going to go say hi to Andy,” Kelly said quietly as she backed away.

“Me too,” Eli said as he did the same.

You were in a staredown with Shawn as they both almost sprinted away.

“Want anything from the bar, [Y/N]? Or still nursing your third glass?” He taunted as he walked past you to the bar behind you.

“Not my third.”

“Sorry, second,” he said with a smile as he turned around.

You shook your head and bit your lip harshly.

“Just upset I’m spoiling your whole facade?” You said, leaning against the bar next to him. “A simple google search could have spoiled it anyway.”

“Sorry we’re not all perfect,” he said, not looking at you.

“Yeah, real bummer,” you said before pushing yourself off the bar and making your way across the room to the people you meant to see earlier.

Andy scooped you up into a big hug as you finally approached him, rocking you back and forth.

“Heard you were being snarky across the room?” He whispered in your ear before pulling away and giving you the same look he’d been giving to you since Kindergarten.

“Some things never change,” you said as you sat down next to him.

“No one really likes him anyway, just think they do because they think he might be famous one day,” he said.

“He won’t be,” you said. “We run in relatively the same circle with my office managing a lot of the people he performs with. He won’t go anywhere with that attitude.”

“Nothing’s changed,” he mumbled.

“Not at all.”

You watched Shawn sweet-talk one of the old cheerleaders from across the room, probably raving about his latest performance where he was a background character for one whole scene but making it sound so much better.

“I’m still shocked nothing ever happened between the two of you,” Andy suggested.

You shot your head to the side to look at him.

“I can’t be with him for more than a minute without a fight starting,” you reminded him.

“That tension, I’m telling you,” he said quietly.

“You are unbelievable,” you said through a laugh.

Before he could respond, Shawn was walking to the group you were currently in.

“Don’t be mean,” Andy warned.

“You know I can’t promise that,” you whispered back.

“Our own broadway baby!” One of the girls yelled as Shawn hugged one of the guys.

You scoffed as Andy shot you a warning look before waving at Shawn.

Shawn returned the wave and walked closer.

(ITALICS) Here we go again.

“Good to see you, man,” Shawn said as he shook his hand.

“You, too,” Andy said as sweet as ever.

“You still live around here?” Shawn asked.

“No, I actually live in Chicago now,” Andy said.

“That’s great,” Shawn said, being nicer than usual.

“Yeah, how’s the big city?” Andy returned the question.

“Really great,” Shawn said before taking a drink. “I keep pretty busy.”

“So I hear,” Andy said with a nod.

You took another drink as you watched the interaction between the two of them. Andy knew how much you didn’t like Shawn, but the two still always got along pretty well. While you were always the first person he greeted after the musical, Shawn was the second. You tried not to let it make your blood boil. But that’s just how Andy was. He loved everyone and everyone loved him.

“Hey, [Y/N], heard a bunch of people from Samson’s are coming to the show next week?” Shawn questioned.

“Yes, we are,” you said casually.

“We? As in you’re going?” Shawn pried.

“Well, I do work with Jordan fairly often, so yes, I will be going,” you said softly.

“Great,” he said through a toothy smile.

“Fantastic,” you said as you mirrored his look.

Before the conversation could turn bad, Shawn got distracted and walked away.

Andy let out a breath before taking a drink, “I have a feeling you don’t actually feel fantastic about it.”

“As long as I don’t see him, we’ll be just fine,” you said, leaning your elbow on the table.

“I feel like that’s jinxing yourself,” Andy said slowly.

“Well, I’ve said it over fifty times since we decided we were going, so this time would be no different. If it was jinxed, it was jinxed over a month ago,” you said, finishing your glass.

“I wish you luck,” he said.

“Thanks,” you said as you squeezed his arm before standing up to go to your friends who just walked in.

You could see Sophie eyeing Shawn from a mile away.

“Soph?” You questioned as she snapped out of it and looked at you. “What are you looking at?”

“I’m not saying that out loud,” she replied.

“Good idea,” you said back.

“You have to admit, he looks good,” she said simply.

“You know I would never admit that even if I did believe it.”

The few of you made your way around a table with a few other people you did the musicals with and talked about the great times you had as you had another glass of wine and started to feel it hit, along with everyone else.

You were laughing at someone’s story about a performance gone wrong before you realized Shawn was there. You couldn’t even tell when he got there but it wasn’t bothering you nearly as much as you thought it would.

When he wasn’t trying to impress everyone around him, he wasn’t bad at all to be around, but when his ego took over and all he wanted to do was make people think he was something he wasn’t, you wanted to kill him.

“Remember when [Y/N] bit Shawn’s lip?” Sophie reminded everyone.

Shawn threw his head back in laughter as you shook your head and looked down.

“I still have a scar!” Shawn yelled from across the table as he pointed at you.

“I’m sorry!” You yelled back through a laugh. “If you would’ve done the moves we practiced, it wouldn’t have happened!”

“You bit through his lip!” someone said.

“Not on purpose!” You said through a laugh.

Shawn shook his head as the group calmed down, “I find that hard to believe.”

“Well, believe it. The last thing I wanted to do was have to drive you to the emergency room on a Friday night,” you said.

“And you stayed with me the whole time,” he said as he rested his hand on his chest. “I’m touched.”

“Don’t get used to it,” you reminded him.

“I would never,” he said with a smirk.

“Someone do karaoke!” Someone else yelled as they pointed at two people getting off the stage.

Your eyes met Shawn’s from across the table as you both nodded and walked towards the stage, not even having to say the song which you found early on was both your default karaoke song. It was always a duet between the two of you at your cast parties.

Bruises by Train started playing as people turned and cheered to see the duo up on stage.

Shawn started singing the first verse as you bopped your head to the familiar tune.

You cut in with your part as you looked at him, and he looked back at you.

You felt like you were back on stage with him, playing the part and acting like you could kiss him when this was all said and done. He joined in with you for the chorus as the two of you stood fairly close, looking at each other as you belted the chorus.

You stood side by side for the next part, your shoulders brushing as you pointed at people as you sang “have you seen him?”

You casually changed “Johnny B” to “Andy T” as Andy hollered from the back of the bar and Shawn laughed through his half of the line.

You went back into the chorus as you looked at him again, spreading your arms and feeling like you were on the big stage all over again. You didn’t realize how much you missed it.

You sang the lines of the bridge softly as Shawn did the same, his eyes not leaving yours. You looked at Shawn in ways you hadn’t since the final night senior year, reminding everyone watching why the two of you were always the stars.

Before you could register it, the song was done and you were standing inches from Shawn as everyone cheered.

“Guess you still got it,” Shawn said with a small smile.

“Guess you do, too,” you said back, not even wanting to be snarky anymore.

You both walked back to your table, this time Shawn standing next to you as you laughed with your friends.

You glanced at the time just to see it was 1:00 am as people were leaving.

“Shit,” you mumbled as you went to call an Uber since you clearly couldn’t drive.

You looked around just to see that Sophie and your other friends had left. Andy was gone, too, and you were running out of options.

You planned on not really drinking and just driving back to the city tonight, but that was no longer an option.

“You good?” You heard from behind you.

You turned to see Shawn with his hands tucked in his pockets.

“I was going to drive back tonight,” you mumbled.

“That’s not happening anymore.”

“Yeah, I know,” you scoffed. “I’ll just call my parents.”

“Come on, I got a hotel. You can stay with me,” Shawn said as he started walking away.

“Aren’t you drunk?” You said as you watched him.

He turned around and shook his head, “I had one beer nearly six hours ago.”

“Oh, ok,” you said as you followed him to his car.

You drove in silence to a hotel a few blocks away, feeling your buzz quickly wear off.

You followed him in and up to his room. He let you in in front of him as you made your way to the bed in the corner and plopped down on it.

“You’re a lifesaver,” you said to the ceiling.

“I know,” he sighed as he sat on the edge of your bed. “We can pick up your car in the morning.”

“Thanks,” you said as you turned on your side to look at him.

“I’m sorry about before,” you said softly. “I got carried away with the digs.”

He nodded his head and leaned back so his head was next to yours, “I deserved it.”

You turned to look at him better, noticing his jawline as he spoke.

“I mean, it’s kind of embarrassing having to come to your reunion as an understudy,” he said softly.

“It’s still Broadway,” you reminded him. “You’re twenty-two. You have plenty of time to ace the lead.”

“Thanks,” he said as he also turned to look at you.

Your faces were dangerously close as you watched his eyes flick towards your lips and you inched closer.

Before you could rethink it, Shawn was on top of you and his tongue was in your mouth.

Every insult you had hurled before were forgotten as he deepened the kiss and moved you up the bed, his hand caressing your back underneath your shirt and getting dangerously close to your bra.

This was not something you ever did in the musicals.

You woke up the next morning, slightly startled as you looked around at your surroundings.

And then seeing the sleeping figure next to you.

“Fuck,” you mumbled as you remembered doing things you never imagined doing the night before.

You noticed you were wearing his shirt and tried not to groan as you slowly got out of the bed to find your clothes. You threw them back on and called an Uber as you slipped on your heels and tiptoed to the door, grabbing your purse and sneaking out.

You sat in the back of the Uber and cursed everything you could as you made your way to the bar again.

You hopped out of the car and into your own as you rested your head on your steering wheel and banged it against it a few times for good measure.

Your headache began to sink in as you prayed you wouldn’t have to throw up on your two-hour drive back home.

You finally started your car and put the nearest McDonalds into your maps before pulling out.

You could’ve screamed when Bruises played through your speakers.

Your pounding headache didn’t go away the next few days, and it certainly wasn’t just from your hangover.

Monday was a whole new obstacle as half your coworkers asked about your reunion and the other half wanted to talk about the show on Friday.

Your head was pounding, and your coffee wasn’t cutting it anymore. You rested your head in your hands for a moment to breathe before you went to grab lunch.

Your phone rang before you even had that moment.

“Yes?” You said simply.

“You have a visitor. He’ll be waiting in the commons,” the receptionist said before hanging up.

Your heart leaped into your throat before you tried to swallow it down. You took a shaky breath before grabbing your bag and walking downstairs, a little too terrified to see who was waiting for you downstairs.

Seeing Andy waiting there was the best thing to happen to you in the past week.

You breathed a sigh of relief as you walked up to him and gave him a quick hug.

“What are you doing here?” You asked with a smile.

“My flight leaves out of JFK in a few hours, so I thought we could grab lunch first,” he said as you began to walk out of the building.

“Perfect. The place next door is great,” you said as you felt the first joy you’d felt since Saturday night.

“I also have to ask you something,” he said slowly.

“Mhm,” you mumbled as you pushed the door open to the cafe, and he followed behind you.

“Where did you go Saturday night? After the reunion?”

Your heart went right back into your throat as you didn’t look at him and instead focused on the menu on the wall.

“Back here. I got back super late,” you said as you begged your voice not to falter.

“Really? Because I saw your car there Sunday morning,” he said.

You knew you couldn’t prolong it, so you finally looked at him as he looked at you with a blank stare and raised eyebrows.

“I went to Sophie’s,” you tried.

“Sophie left before I did,” he said quietly. “And she left with Eli.”

You didn’t respond and instead stepped up to order your usual. You could hear Andy sigh as you recited your order.

You stepped to the side and let him order before grabbing a table in a secluded corner.

He sat his number down on the table before sitting across from you and leaning forward on the table, giving you another look.

“We’ll do this again. Where did you go Saturday night?” He asked.

You sighed as your shoulders slumped.

“I stayed with Shawn,” you whispered. “He offered, and I didn’t have many other options.”

“I knew it,” he said in his typical, “I told you so” voice he’d been using on you for years.

“Don’t even say anything. I’m not proud of it,” you mumbled as they set your food in front of you.

“[Y/N], come on. You know I’d never say anything mean about it,” he reminded you.

“Yeah, yeah I know,” you said as you started to pick at your food. “No one knows.”

“So I’m guessing that means you did more than just sleep wherever he was staying?” He pried.

“If I don’t say it out loud, it never happened,” you said before taking a sip.

“Oh my God,” he mumbled.

“You said you wouldn’t say anything,” you groaned.

“I won’t. I won’t,” he said before he sighed. “I just want to say that I told you so, and I saw this coming from a mile away.”

“Ok, I get it,” you said through a laugh.

“I mean I literally said it probably hours before you did it,” he reminded you again.

“Yes, ok, anyway, when does your flight leave?” You said, trying to derail the conversation.

“4:00 pm, but anyway, who came on to who?” He continued.

“I’m not answering any questions,” you said, taking bites of your food as he thought of more questions to ask.

“Fine,” he sighed, finally eating.

“But he definitely came on to me.”

“I knew it.”

You kept busy the next week on your latest project, and you managed to forget about the past weekend...until Friday came up faster than expected.

You hated to admit it, but you bought a new outfit for the show, one that you know would make Shawn drool in the off chance you did see him.

During the day you were in and out of meetings, barely having time to even sit down in your office. When you finally had a chance, one of the interns leaned in.

“Ross was looking for you before, but he just told me to tell you that Jordan won’t be on tonight,” she said.

“What?” you said a little louder than planned.

“Yeah, I think he said he has strep throat,” she explained before walking away.

You took a deep breath and ran your hands through your hair.

This could’ve been your worst nightmare.

You took your time getting ready after work as the chances you would see Shawn increased with each passing moment in the past week.

You met your coworkers outside the venue an hour before the show and found Ross to grab your ticket.

“Someone told you right?” Ross said as he handed it to you.

“Yeah, Jordan’s out,” you said through a sigh.

“And that Shawn Mendes will be on,” he said as he looked at the altered program. “Know anything about him?”

“Well,” you paused and wondered if you should tell the truth or lie through your teeth. “I actually went to high school with him.”

Ross’s eyebrows shot up as he looked at you. “Tell me everything. I hear he’s looking for new management.”

You bit your tongue as your group walked into the theater and tried to think this through.

“He’s insanely talented. We starred in most of the musicals together, and he manages to have chemistry with anyone he’s onstage with, which I hope you’ll see tonight. He’s got a good heart, but I think it’s hard for him to show it sometimes. This is all he’s ever wanted to do, and he shows it in everything he does,” you explained as you found your seats.

“He sounds like a good guy,” Ross offered.

“Yeah,” you paused. “He is.”

“What musicals did the two of you do together?” He continued.

“Um, wow, we did The Last Five Years, High School Musical, Footloose and Hairspray,” you remembered.

“So why did he go and do this while you went into management?”

“He had the confidence I could never get,” you said as your voice shook just the slightest.

“You’re confident.”

“I wasn’t in high school,” you explained. “Shawn had enough for the two of us. Sure, I would’ve loved to do this,” you gestured to the stage. “But Shawn knew he was going to do this. There was a big difference.”

“Yeah, I get that,” he said with a nod. “And you settled for management.”

“I wouldn’t say settled. This is my dream job,” you said through a small laugh. “I wanted college and stability. I needed it. Shawn was always really good at being spontaneous which was definitely something I could’ve learned from.”

“You speak pretty highly of him,” Ross pointed out.

You paused for a moment and ran through the conversation you just had in your head. You didn’t realize how many nice things you had to say about him.

“Yeah,” you said before pausing. “He’s a really good guy. We didn’t always get off on the right foot, but when it came down to it, we made a good duo.”

“Well, if this show goes well, I just might have to have a conversation with him afterward. Care to join me? Introduce me to him?” Ross questioned as he looked at you.

You swallowed hard before nodding your head, “Of course.”

The lights dimmed before Ross could say anything more than “Great.”

You took a deep breath and released it slowly as Shawn walked on to the stage. You were nervous for him, you being the only one who knew the weight of this performance, what Samson Management could do for him.

You’d never even seen him perform except from the wings of a stage while you did a quick change or quickly rehearsed lines with someone in the stage crew. Before tonight, all you ever got were glimpses of the person he became when he walked on stage.

And he was amazing at it.

He had the whole crowd on the edge of their seats as he sang “Waving Through a Window.” You did everything in your power to make sure no one saw you wipe the tear escape your eye.

You never would’ve been able to tell that this was Shawn’s first time performing this part. He had the whole audience laughing when they needed to be laughing and crying when they needed to be crying. You felt your heart follow his journey as you saw Shawn genuinely thrive.

It was intermission before you knew it, and you took a moment in the bathroom to fix your makeup that may have ran down your cheek a little.

By the time you got back to your seat, Ross was jotting down quick notes.

“So, what do you think?” You asked.

“He really is something else,” he said with a big smile. “We definitely have to talk after.”

You couldn’t hide your smile as the lights dimmed again and the musical continued.

By the time the show was done, your mascara needed fixing again and your chest hurt. You ducked into the bathroom again before meeting Ross to introduce him to Shawn.

You showed your credentials to the stage manager as you walked ahead of Ross to find the door with Shawn’s name on it. You took a deep breath before knocking slightly and hearing a muffled “come in.”

You creaked the door open to watch Shawn turn around to see you.

“[Y/N],” he said just above a whisper as his face fell.

Before he could say anything else, you opened up the door more to show Ross with you. Shawn’s immediately put on a different face as he stood up.

“Shawn, this is Ross Thompson, senior manager at Samson Management. Ross, this is Shawn Mendes, Clinton’s own Broadway baby,” you said with a smile as the two shook hands before Shawn nervously stuffed his in his pockets and glanced over at you.

“You were amazing,” Ross started. “And we would love to meet with you sometime, over at Samson.”

“Really? That would be amazing,” Shawn said with a smile.

Ross handed him his card before saying, “Email me Monday morning about what times work best for you within this next week, and we’ll set up a time where the three of us can talk.” He said as he gestured at you, and you nodded your head.

“Thank you so much. I look forward to talking more,” Shawn said as he shook Ross’s hand again.

“We’ll see you then,” Ross said as the both of you turned toward the door.

“[Y/N]?” You heard him say as you both turned around. “Can I steal you for a minute?”

You swallowed hard before nodding over at Ross.

“I’ll meet you guys at Ellen’s,” you said with a soft smile before Ross waved goodbye and walked out.

You shut the door behind him before you leaned against it and looked at Shawn.

“I have about a million things to say, and I don’t know which one to start with,” he said a little too quickly.

“Yeah, I figured.”

“What did you say?” He paused. “That made him want to talk with me?”

“Well, he asked about you and was so excited to hear that we went to high school together, so I told him everything I could,” you said quietly.

“Which was?” He pried.

“Um,” you faltered. “I said that we starred in the musicals together…”

“And?” He cut you off.

“And that you’re amazing at what you do. That you were born to be doing this, and it shows when you walk onstage. That you have a good heart, but sometimes have a hard time showing it. That we didn’t always get off on the right foot, but at the end of it all, we made a really good duo,” you said, trying to look anywhere but his eyes that seemed to be piercing into yours.

“You mean that?”

You could hear the strain in his voice.

“Of course I do,” you said through an exhale. “Look at you, Shawn. You just walked out on that stage like you’ve been playing this role your whole life. You had that whole audience convinced you were the actual Evan Hansen when that person doesn’t even exist.”

A moment of silence surrounded the two of you. You stared just past Shawn at the table scattered with his things, focusing on an open foundation bottle instead of him.

“So you liked it?” He finally said.

“I loved it,” you said quietly. “I’ve never actually gotten to see perform from an audience before. It was breathtaking.”

“Thanks,” he said almost under his breath.

It went quiet again, and you uncomfortably switched from one foot to the other as the tension filled the room like so many times before. Except for all different reasons.

“So why’d you leave?” He finally asked as his hands flew up with frustration.

Your body slumped as you sighed and sat on the arm of the chair right next to the door.

“Please don’t do this, Shawn,” you begged as you looked at the floor.

“No, I’m doing this. Why did you leave? I’m not just some guy you met at a bar, [Y/N]. I thought you had a little more respect for me than that,” he said, the frustration in his voice evident.

“Because you’re you,” you started. “You’re a pain in my ass and have been for the past nine years. I’ve had to watch you captivate the stage with this natural flair that only you could pull off, and I never could. Seeing you on Saturday was like being on stage as a freshman as Gabriella all over again, and I was staring at Troy, who had the confidence of ten people, showing this whole world what he can do, and I can’t. I couldn’t just let myself live in whatever fake world we made up Saturday night just to regret it Sunday morning.”

“Why are you saying this? It’s been five years since we last sang together, but it felt like yesterday when I looked at you doing that note change you always did when we sang that song. Whenever I perform with you, I forget that you’re you. I forget that you hate my guts half the time and the other half of the time you’re tolerating it because you have to,” he said, frustration evident in his voice. “You can’t make up excuses anymore, [Y/N]. What happened Saturday was not some performance. We’re not in high school. And even if we were, you are still just as amazing as a performer as you think I am, but you’re still stuck in this mindset that you were just put there by default.”

“Do you know how hard it is to perform with you when everyone who encounters you falls in love with you?” You almost yelled as you stood up, and Shawn stepped back. “I had to, and still have to, work twice as hard as you to get half of the recognition you did. We were never equals. I didn’t hate you, Shawn. I could never hate you because of how you made me feel like I was everything when we were on stage together. I have tried every night for the past nine years to forget the way my stomach would flip when you sang to me, and right when I thought I could, I was right back to it because of that fucking reunion.”

“Then why did you leave?” He finally yelled. “I thought I had finally figured you out, finally figured out how I could get you to be mine, and by the time I woke up, you were gone and probably halfway to New York. Why won’t you just accept that there was always something here, but you were too scared to ever admit it because of what other people thought of me?”

You didn’t say anything. You didn’t have anything to say.

“I have been chasing after you for nine years, and I’m just starting to think that I just can’t do it anymore,” he said quietly as he sat down on the couch opposite of you with his hand on his forehead.

You watched the way he rubbed his forehead as he caught his breath, the way his body slumped as he let out everything he’d always wanted to say.

“When I woke up on Sunday, I couldn’t get out of my head that I was just there because I was convenient for the night. That I wasn’t what you actually wanted,” you said slowly. “I didn’t realize there was something more.”

He sighed and looked up at you.

“But by the time I got back here, I knew I shouldn’t have left. I made that mistake, and I’m sorry that you had to deal with the consequences of it. Whenever I’m with you, I just get caught back in this old mindset that you’re always going to be better than me, and that’s a real blow to the ego, but it’s all in my head,” you said.

He didn’t say anything as you finished your thoughts.

“That’s all I have left to say,” you said after a moment.

“Then I think you should go,” you said just above a whisper.

“Shawn…” you started.

“I’ve had enough for one night. Please just go.”

So you did.

The following week was just as painful as the one before as you awaited the meeting you would eventually have to sit through with just Ross and Shawn. The calendar notification popped up Monday morning, so you knew Shawn called him as soon as he possibly could to set this up. You had a brief meeting with Ross on Thursday morning, and Shawn was planned to join you shortly after.

You walked with Ross to one of the rooms on the first floor to go over some notes before meeting Shawn. He pulled up his laptop and let out a sigh.

“I need you to be honest with me about how you feel about Shawn,” Ross said.

“Ok,” you said carefully.

“Because I asked around and the things I’ve heard have been exactly 50/50. People either love him or hate him. I can’t afford to have a hated man on our team,” Ross explained. “So I need the real story.”

You took a deep breath and stared at your own computer screen before looking up at him.

“I have known Shawn since I was 14. The first time I met him was a chemistry read for High School Musical. I had heard about him. I had heard…not the greatest things about him. That he had a big ego and knew he was good and wasn’t afraid to flaunt it. So, I went into that chemistry read with this horrible idea of him in my head. And I held on to it for a lot longer than I’d like to admit. But every day I spent with him on the stage, that chipped away more and more,” you said.

“What I said on Friday, about him knowing this is what he was meant to do, is completely true. People often take that the wrong way. I took that the wrong way. I wasted years hating him when he was just passionate about what he did. Once you realize that, he is genuinely one of the most amazing performers you will ever work with and just as amazing of a person,” you finished.

Ross nodded his head as he leaned back in his chair, crossing an ankle over a knee as he bit the end of his pen.

“I trust you,” he said after a moment.

Before you could say anything else, Ross’s laptop dinged to notify him that Shawn was here.

“You want to go get him?” Ross offered.

You nodded your head and walked out of the room and down the long hallway to see Shawn waiting at the end of it by the receptionist’s desk.

“Shawn,” you said with a head nod towards the hallway.

He didn’t say anything and followed you down the hallway.

Before you went in, Shawn stopped a few feet away from the door. You turned around and looked at him.

“This is make or break for me,” he said.

“I know.”

“What do you think it’s going to be?” He asked.

You sighed and leaned against the wall.

“Despite what has happened, I have done everything I possibly can at this point. I believe in you, Shawn, and I’ve done everything I can to get Ross to feel that same way,” you explained.

“You mean that?”

“Every word.”

You didn’t allow him time to respond as you opened the door and let him in in front of you. His nerves seemed to evaporate away as he shook Ross’s hand and took a seat across from the two of you.

Ross sighed as he sat down before he said, “I’ll cut right to it.”

Shawn simply nodded his head.

“We would love for you to join our team,” he said.

You watched Shawn relax, and it took everything in you not to jump up.

“Thank you so much, sir. You won’t regret it,” Shawn said with a smile that could light up the entire city.

“I know,” Ross said with a head nod. “You’re lucky you have someone as great as [Y/N] in your life. She did a really good job of talking you up.”

Shawn looked at you as your eyes widened at Ross’s blatant statement.

“Yeah,” Shawn said, still looking at you. “I am.”

The meeting went relatively quickly as preliminary paperwork was filled out and the basics were gone over. The looks Shawn gave you didn’t go unnoticed as you explained the necessary policies.

“Well, Shawn, that’s all we have for you today,” Ross said as he stacked up some papers and set them on top of his laptop. “You’ll be working mostly with me and [Y/N], but for the majority of the time it’ll just be [Y/N],” he said as he gestured to you.

You nodded your head as Shawn looked at you again and nodded along.

“You have my number, but call this number if it’s during work hours,” you said as you handed him your card. “I check my email constantly, so you’ll also be able to reach me quickly there if I’m in a meeting.”

“Got it,” he said as he placed your card with the other papers stacked in his arms.

“We look forward to working with you,” Ross said as he gestured forward. “I’ll have [Y/N] walk you out,”

You and Shawn walked out the door and down the hallway towards the front door as tension surrounded you two again.

“Can I see you this weekend?” Shawn said quickly as you reached the front door.

Without saying anything, you pushed him out the front door, and you followed behind him.

“Sorry,” he mumbled.

“No, no, just the receptionist is nosey,” you said with a head shake. “Ross doesn’t care.”

“Oh, ok.”

“Anyway…” you offered.

“Right, I just think we need to talk,” he said as he impatiently fiddled with his thumbs.

“What’s there left to say, Shawn?” You asked as you crossed your arms as an unexpected breeze blew by. “We both said what we needed to last weekend. I got you your management team. What else do you want?”

“I don’t just want you because of a management team,” Shawn said with hurt in his voice. “And I did not think you’d be the one I’d work with if they brought me on here.”

“We want to keep you with people you know-“

“That doesn’t matter right now. [Y/N], what I’m trying to say is I want to see you. I want to take you on a damn date because I’ve wanted to since I was 14 and heard you sing ‘Breaking Free,’” he said, sounding out of breath, rarely seeing him so vulnerable.

You felt the smile tug at your lips as you tried to keep a straight face.

“We do still have a lot to talk about,” you said.

“A shit ton, but it would be a lot easier to do that over a drink, and when I know you feel the same way I do about you.”

You rolled your eyes with a smile before you said, “Of course, I want to get a drink with you. As a date.”

“Thank, God,” he said as his body slumped and his breath left him.

“I told Ross about how I truly felt about you. That that big ego I thought you had was just passion for what you did, and I realize that now. And I’m sorry I couldn’t do it sooner,” you said before pausing. “You’re a good guy, Shawn,” you said simply as you looked up at him. “I don’t think I say that enough, and certainly not to your face.”

“Then say it again,” he said through a small smile.

“Never.”

He stepped forward, aiming to kiss you but you held your hand up before he did.

“I’m not going to kiss you outside my office, and I don’t kiss before the first date,” you said with a smirk.

He returned the look as he raised an eyebrow and leaned in to hug you.

You held on to him tightly as he gripped onto you the same way. You felt his lips graze over your ear.

“We’ve done a lot more than kiss before our first date.”

You pushed him off and walked towards the door, begging the blush to disappear from your face before you made it back to your office.

“See you tomorrow? Ed’s on fifth? Pick you up at 6?”

You turned around and looked at him as he started backing away.

“The Broadway bar? Really?”

“I have a brand,” he said with a shrug and his signature smirk.

You turned to go into the building before leaning out the door to look at him one last time.

“See you then, broadway baby.”

word count: 1.9k, yep just a wee bit longer than the last one :)

warnings: fluff once again bc i was crying a lot earlier while reading angsty fics and i wanna feel happy again! Also haha snuck some aladdin lines in there too ;)

a/n: i really didn’t intend to make this like a “her ___” thing but i’m down for it. i’m writing this to pass the time bc i’m waiting for my friend who lives in korea to be free so we can talk. also, wow! “her laugh” was really well received! thanks friends :) feel free to leave any feedback you may have for me! [oh, i mention some things about how the anglican church began in a funny way, i’m not trying to offend anyone’s religion so plz don’t take it that way]

History was hands down your favorite subject. Something about analyzing past civilizations was so fascinating to you. To think that the things you read about in textbooks actually happened was mind-boggling but also really amusing. There was a guy, a king for that matter, that wanted a divorce so badly that he created an entirely new church in the process of separating from his wife, who he also proceeded to decapitate (okay, maybe that part wasn’t so funny).

You looked forward to your history class every day because of your love for its engaging and rigorous curriculum...for the most part. A small part of you also excitedly anticipated the conversations you would have with the cute guy who sat behind you. Bucky Barnes. The quarterback of your school’s football team but also president of the Science Olympiad club. Could he get any more perfect? Apparently, yes. Not only was he a skilled athlete and an intelligent student, but he was simply a good guy. Surprisingly, that was hard to come by at your school. Guys would either brag about their perfect SAT scores or about all the sweet girls they cut off. Bucky wasn’t like that. He was so far from that. Whenever he caught you in the halls, he’d shoot you a smile or a wave and sometimes he’d even offer to walk you to your next class despite your protests that he would be tardy.

A poke on your shoulder snapped you out of your daydream. You turned around to meet the glorious blue eyes of the person that was the focus of said daydream.

“Hey, sorry (Y/N), but that pretty little head of yours is blocking the board,” he whispered, afraid of getting called out by your teacher. His compliment brought an intense blush to your face that you would not let him see. You muttered a quick “sorry” before scooting over and turning your head back around to prevent him from noticing the redness of your face. You tried your best to suppress your thoughts about your little crush and focused your attention on your teacher.

“Alright class, now that we’re beginning our study of the 20th century, I’m rolling out a project in which you and your choice of a partner will do research on the most important political, economic and social aspects of a decade that I’ll be assigned to you.”

Great, you thought. You weren’t really close with anyone in your history class except for Bucky. All your other friends were in the class period after you. You knew Bucky was gonna pair up with Dot, the head cheerleader who had been pining over him since she found out he was the quarterback. She was nice, you just knew you couldn’t compete with her for Bucky’s affections. Not that you really forced yourself to. You didn’t need a boyfriend, especially not now. You prioritized your studies so you could get into your dream school, not getting a man. But...that didn’t mean you were against one. A significant other wasn’t necessary for you but...you saw it as a welcome addition to your life.

Your teacher announced that students were allowed to move out of their seats to find partners. You stood up and anxiously surveyed your options. Bucky was out of the picture. Maybe his friend Steve? No, you knew he was gonna pair up with his girl Peggy. Scott Lang? No, he’d be a fun partner but you knew it would be really hard to get him to avoid procrastinating. Wanda? That could work. You didn’t know her that well but who knows? Maybe you’d gain a new friend after this project. But as you were approaching her, the president of Academic League, Viz had beat you to it. Fuck, now what?

Just as all hope seemed to be lost, you felt a familiar poke on your shoulder. You turned again to meet the same eyes you had looked into just minutes before.

Bucky sent you a friendly smile as he asked, “Got a partner, yet?” with his hands scrunching in his pockets, almost nervously?

Words almost failed you but you managed to let out a little, “Nope”. He smiled at that. Nodding, he replied, “Cool”. Huh, maybe he wasn’t out of the picture.

You and Bucky had been assigned to study the 1940’s and the both of you were currently on your way to his house to get a head start on the project.

“You can have control of the AUX cord if you want, it’s gonna take a while to get to my place,” Bucky offered as you got into his car.

“Oh, I don’t know, you might judge me for my music taste,” you said shyly.

He let out a playful scoff. “No way, you’ll be fine...as long as you don’t play like Jake Paul or some shit.” You giggled at that. “Oh, I’d never do that to you.” You ended up playing some 80’s songs that you were currently into. Bucky seemed to enjoy it, even opting to quietly sing along.

He pulled into his driveway, stopped the car and quickly got out to open your door for you. You smiled at him for the chivalrous gesture. Before he unlocked the front door, he turned to you instead, “I didn’t mention this earlier but I’d just like to apologize for my mom and sister in advance. They can be a lot sometimes.” You softly shook your head. “Oh that’s fine, I’m sure they’re fine.”

With that, he let you in first before yelling, “Ma! Becks! I’m home!” You heard, “Ok honey, in the kitchen! Have a snack before starting homework!” in reply. You followed Bucky into the kitchen; you leaned against the wall as he walked towards a middle-aged woman, his mom, standing in front of the sink with her back facing you. He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek and said, “Hey ma, I’m gonna be working on a project with (Y/N) for a bit, I’m gonna get some snacks for her too.”

“Who?” his mother asked. She looked around the room to find the person in question, aka you. When her eyes settled upon you, she jumped a bit and remarked, “Oh, I’m sorry dear, James didn’t mention that he’d have someone over.” As she got a better look at you, she—not so subtely—whispered to Bucky, “Ooh, she’s really pretty Jamie.” Shock overtook his features, prompting him to softly nudge his mothers. He coughed to mask his embarrassment. “What my beautiful mother means is,” he began, “she’ll have snacks ready for us soon so we should just start working.”

He quickly lead to you to the study, away from the kitchen where his smirking mother stood preparing cookies for the both of you. A younger girl was already seated in the study when you approached it.

“Becca, can you study in your room upstairs, I need to work on a project,” said Bucky.

The little girl, Becca, looked up from her notebook with a sassy look and retorted, “Why don’t you work on your project in your room? I got here first.”

Bucky let out an exasperated sigh. “Because, (Y/N) and I need a lot of space to work on this.”

Becca cocked an eyebrow towards her brother’s direction. “You mean you need a lot of space so you can make out with your girlfriend?”

You wished with everything else in your being that you could’ve turned invisible. You tried to sound confident to defend yourself but your words came out as stutters. “Oh! W-we’re not d-dating. We’re just p-partners.” Becca turned to you with a suspicious look on her face. She started you down for a few second before shrugging.

“Ok, whatever you say. Just call me over when you’re done so I can use this room after.”

Bucky graciously looked to his sister. “Will do, thanks Becks.”

After she retreated to her room, Bucky turned to you. “Like I said, they can be a lot.” With that, you began working on your project.

You and Bucky worked for about 3 hours with short small talk breaks in between before calling it a night.

“Alright, thanks for offering to use your place today. We could work at mine next time, or maybe the library so it isn’t that much trouble to you?” You suggested.

“No it’s alright,” he said. “I like having you here.” His remark brought a similar blush that graced your features earlier that day. You bashfully looked away from him and let out a soft laugh.

“Okay...I’ll see you at school tomorrow. Tell your mom I’m really grateful for her hospitality.” He nodded. With that goodbye, you began your journey home. Turns out, you only lived down the street from Bucky. He had offered to walk you home, but you resisted saying that he had already done so much for you that day.

He made his way back into his house and the kitchen, where he sat on in a seat by the island and buried his face in his hands.

“She seems like a nice girl, James,” his mom said. He removed his hands from his face and moved them to hold his chin.

“Yeah...she really is,” he responded with a blissful smile and gentle look in his eyes. His mother grinned at his obvious infatuation with the girl.

“Do you like her?” his mother teased.

Bucky’s brows furrowed as he replied, “No mom, (Y/N) and I are just friends, we aren’t together.”

His mom sent him a sly smirk, “I never mentioned her name, Jamie.”

He looked confused at first but then he realized his mistake. “Shit.”

She nudged him with her elbow. “Hey, don’t you use that language around me young man.”

Bucky simply groaned and buried his face in his hands once again. “It’s okay Jamie, you can tell me. You can tell me anything, you know that.”

He let out a lovestruck sigh. “I don’t know what it is about her ma. She’s smart, a-and fun.”

“You think she’s pretty?” she asked.

“Beautiful!” he answered almost instantaneously. “She’s got these eyes...a-and this hair! Oh, and her smile?” he let out a helpless sigh. “I could go on and on about her smile.”

Bucky’s mom was really happy seeing her son like this. He’d been through a lot at a young age, losing his father and having to take on the father/big brother role for Becca was tough for him. He never prioritized himself, he put his mom and sister first. They were the ones he cared about most and he did everything in his power to make sure they were happy. That meant he had to sacrifice his own desires to ensure that his family got theirs. But it was Bucky’s turn to be happy now.

“If that’s the case, then you go on and tell her that,” his mother said.

“But—” Bucky began to protest but changed his mind. His look of concern was replaced with one of determination. “You know, I will do that. Tomorrow, I’ll tell her. Maybe I should buy her flowers to make it really sweet? Or no, maybe that actually might be too much...Or I could just be really casual with it and just approach her at her locker? No, I don’t want to make it look like I don’t really care...Or maybe…” Bucky mumbled off thoughts to himself as he left the kitchen to his room.

Bucky’s mother looked after him as he walked away thinking about how grateful she was that you had made your way into Bucky’s heart.

CecilCelebration, October 6: A Super Rare Snap!

Hi, Princesses and Princes!

This post...isn’t about what I was expecting to cover today. I was working on Day 6′s original topic to play catchup, however due to the wonderful technology we rely on, the file of the post’s content was corrupted, losing EVERYTHING. I’m legitimately crying right now, but I know that I need to keep moving. So, to make up for it, I’m moving two shorter posts up in my schedule so that we can actually make it to Day 7 ON Day 7!

So, what’s the new topic? We’re moving from 2011 to 2017, right into the era of Shining Live!

What’s the thing that people think of most when they hear about this tappy tap game? The songs? Nah. The beatmaps? Not really. The events? In some cases, yes, but not much other than that.

The big draw of the game? The cards you use to play!

And when there are multiple photos of lovable characters, you know what that means~

Ranking lists!

Yep, I’ve taken all the available photos of our prince, and I’m going to be revealing my Top 7 of his SRs and URs! Why Top 7? Because when Cecil became a full-fledged member of STARISH, he changed the number of rainbow colored boys from six lovable characters to seven!

This post will cover the Top 7 SRs, while the next will cover the URs. So, let’s get started!

#7: Shining Sports Day

While the outfit is pretty basic (white shirt, black sport shorts, jacket of team color), what really got it for me was the poses. In the Normal shot, Cecil’s parading around with megaphones, looking like he’s ready to cheer his own team on (cheerleader set KLab PLZ). And in the Special shot? Poor boy can’t handle the spice in the bread, it’s so CUTE! Get this guy some milk!

#6: Holy Night Santa Claus (Christmas V2)

I’m very soft for this Christmas set from last year, and Cecil’s card is no exception. Considering that (fun fact!) he never celebrated the holiday in his country and only started understanding it once he became an idol, seeing how caring he is about spreading the joy of it to children just warms my heart. The sweet expression he has while filling the stocking gets to me every time. ^^

#5: Marine Festival

I’m a sucker for sailor suits. Marine sets are one of my weaknesses. I just recently got the UR Otoya from this set, one of my dream cards.

But back to Cecil. It seems weird that he would be a part of this, as the boy hates water along with the fishies, but this look fits him really well! And him with the bright green water gun? COME TO ME, BABY!

(But his side story...honey, I need to teach you the meaning of “double entendre”...)

#4: Odorokiman

MAN THIS SET WAS FOR HIM. I know this look is based off a planet people like to make puns out of, but this look is perfect for what we hear about in terms of his heritage and his magic abilities. The gloves and the cat head staff are two of my favorite touches~ (Also, have you seen him on your home screen?

The ribbons are HUGE!!!)

#3: Magical Halloween Live Show (Halloween V1)

I said that marine sets were a big weakness of mine? Well Halloween sets are an even bigger one. And aside from one or two cards in this set, this is my favorite out of the OG designs. Cecil being a witch wizard is just spot on, and the fact that he openly gets to use his magic in the Special shot is just beautiful! And the expressions...in the Special shot, I know that’s he’s showing off the petals he’s conjured up, but I bust out laughing because the way the card is framed with his eyes just screams to me,

“Look at this big stick I have!”

#2: New Year’s Feast: Happiness and Prosperity (New Years V2)

THIS is peak adorable levels for the prince, FIGHT ME. Cecil is known to love aspects of Japanese culture and explore new things relating to it. So to see him decked out in a kimono playing a good ol’ game of karuta (played it myself, really fun game, really helps while learning the language) is just great.

And BOTH expressions on his face. They. Are. PRECIOUS.

I want to squeeze him in a hug so BAD!!

#1: Happy Hearts♡My Dear Doctor

Now some of you may be wondering: “If I love the last one so much, why is THIS event card your #1 SR?” Well, mainly because...this card means a lot to me. For a few reasons:

This card was part of the first event that I ever attempted to tier on. I had gotten enough to get URs via points, but never enough to get past ranks that would just get you an extra SR. During the entire week of March this event was on, I was in uncharted territory trying my HARDEST to stay high. In the end, I had gotten #288 on the charts, enough to stay in Tier 2 and get a near max copy of the UR and a FULL copy of this SR. And to this day it remains my ONLY event card that I have maxed and crowned.

As much as I love music and the arts, I’m currently in my second year of college studying to get into dental school. And for me, when media that I love combines with something that I’m striving for in real life, it hits me right in the kokoro. As such, I love medical/dental themes. TO DEATH. I kid you not, at 5 in the morning, when I was getting ready for a 7:30 lab, I seen the first announcement of this event and I felt like my heart was going to lift out of my chest. And I know that they push the fact that Cecil is a nurse in this, I get it. But with the products they try to sell, the scrubs, and the background of that Special shot, I see him as a dental hygienist to the end. I DARE YOU, FIGHT ME.

The overall card is FLAT OUT CUTE. The boy’s arms are overflowing in the Normal shot, just wanting to share the love he’s promoting to his friends. And the Special shot? MY WORD. That gorgeous smile on his face while he’s clinging onto a huge tube of toothpaste? I love it. I just love it.

So, those were my Top 7 Cecil SRs! Stay tuned for my Top 7 URs in just a little bit!

(matthew daddario, male, he/him) —— oh, look! it’s our favorite camper, JESSE COSTELLO. their file says they are TWENTY years old and reside in the ARES cabin. i hear they’re actually HELPFUL and PERCEPTIVE, but they can get kinda WITHDRAWN and VOLATILE. rumor has it THEY HAVE BEEN A WAR PHOTOGRAPHER SINCE THEY TURNED EIGHTEEN. but hey, what do you expect? it’s in their blood.

so an ares kid. lover of war, kind of a dick. you know his dad--- i would say it’s hereditary if they had genes. he’s been at the camp on and off for roughly eight years but became less frequent once he turned eighteen and began flying overseas, following the war.

he has a complicated relationship with war in general. i’ll save super details for those ~emotional conversations~ but in addition to some of his abilities being linked to the actual intuition of battle, he’s also super into history. he loves reading books on great wars throughout world history and could lowkey get his phd in this shit if he was dedicated enough to it.

before he was claimed, he lived a.... less than simple life. not like ~trauma~ but his mom was a bartender in a bad neighborhood in los angeles. a place where the crowd was rough and the drinks were strong. ares loved hanging out there for the same reasons jess would have--- the place was steeped in chaos. you know the classic trope im going for here. guy in a bar meets bartender, they have a one night stand and she’s left with an empty bed and a full uterus.

he was constantly getting in fights in school. he was always beating up the bullies who were hurting other kids. i wish i could say his intentions were pure and he genuinely cared about the little ppl. but honestly, his motives were corroded. he just liked beating the toughest guy. it was never about taking down the opposition as much as beating the opposition if that makes sense.

he once influenced a school-wide food fight by pitting two boys against each other over a cheerleader.

it was anarchy.

and he watched on the sidelines feeling accomplished and the school was put on lock-down. it was all fun and games until someone who got a little too much spaghetti sauce on himself pulled out a knife and stabbed a kid.

which was actually around the time hades came an claimed him tbh and told him there was a place where he could learn how to do this shit beyond his amateur ass

as much as he will talk shit on coming to the camp, it gave him such purpose and understanding and structure about who he is and how he works in this world. he’s incredibly well organized and almost always has a book in his hands or in his back pocket. he reads when the world is quiet and needs someone else’s chaos to be immersed in.

he met a girl at camp. fell in love with said girl. but girl was like him and couldn’t keep her feet in one place. it’s what he loved about her, but also played a huge role in why they split when they turned 18. they loved each other and understood that insatiable drive to be on the move, to chase thrills and danger. their paths wouldn’t intertwine much despite moving at the same pace. she was the one that made jess realize love and war are not on opposing ends of the scale. you’re terrified, you’re vulnerable and they’re the only two things worth fighting for.

which is why!!!!! it sucks that he didn’t fight more!!!! but he was 18. let him live

he is a war photographer now, travelling the world and immersing himself into the frontlines of human battles. he’s made something so devastating and soul-crushing into art. he’s probably one of the only people on the planet who can find beauty in explosions, dismembered bodies and dead children. when he tells people he’s a photographer, the general population automatically wants to see pics. don’t worry, he has two piles. the pg-13 pics that make you ooh and ah and the pics that make your love for humanity diminish with each shot. he doesn’t act like the latter option exists unless you’re close to him. they don’t need that trauma too.

he’s an alcoholic.

not a fan of women-abusers. (ask him ‘bout the time he killed his mom’s bf. jk, plz don’t.)

likes the color burgundy.

has a motorcycle that he ironically called his chariot until ppl started legitimately referring to it as that and then he panicked and never did it again. kicks bike when angry.

says “look at the time” a lot but never seems to have a watch on when looking at his wrist.

abilities.

skilled fighter: i mean hi. weapon or no weapon, he’s one of the most skilled fighters at the camp. he’s also willing to train youngin’s if they come to him. he loves to teach ppl who are dedicated and actually want to learn. hand to hand combat but also knives. he’ll teach you how to square up without a gun.

battle precognition: one of my favorites, probably. he has such a sixth sense about the inner workings of war and can usually sense the oppositions next move if he’s focused. it’s not as powerful as his dad’s, but he’s working on it and leveled up during his time as a photographer (which also plays a role in how he knows how to get perf pics but that’s another story) he’s also an impeccable strategist because of this. can’t plan a party, but a battle? no probs.

weapon conjuration: he has the ability to turn any weapon he’s holding into a different weapon. while he’s typically a fan of knives, he’s been known to like steel bats or crowbars.

wanted connections.

LET HIM TRAIN YOU. be a dedicated person who genuinely wants to better yourself and is able to take abuse (or isn’t able to and cries, we can work things out) and he’ll fucking dedicate so much time to working with you on training you in all forms of fighting,. he wants to make sure everyone is the best strong soldier they can be and wants them to be braver than any u.s. marine kbye

an anti-war nut who always has to fight him like. plz it would be so fun.

a revolutionary pal. someone who feels the same way he is about an impending war and is wanting to start doing underground work to prepare the youth for the war. i hope it’s someone who fought in a war with him previously and hopefully someone he doesn’t get along with? like i want the dynamic of we dont like each other but we remember the bloodshed from last time and want to prepare.

*bell rings*, *Asuka runs straight at her opponent*, *gets punched once by some weak ass looking shot*, *collapses uselessly* PPPFFFFTTTTTTTT

I hate that elbow kick off thing Zelina does. Becky used to have a hold like that in nxt. Hated it then, too. Awful.

That hurricanrana where Zelina fell on her ass, though. Wow. Okay.

Is it just me that thought the modified grounded octopus took awhile to cinch in? That was in for so long lol.

Why are women barely jumping for these german suplexes lately?

Omg that one-armed suplex by Asuka was great.

That kickout by Asuka was incredibly well done. What a perfect stretch with perfect timing. Zelina even tucked the left arm. Points.

Oh nice didn’t know Zelina could do a moonsault. And right onto the knees so the Asuka lock can be set in. Nice. Good ending.

That was better than their Clash match, and Zelina showcased different things, even if I wasn’t a fan of some of it.

Ah the debut of Mandy and Dana as a tag team.

I really like Lana and Nattie together.

Oh wow decisions that make sense and are building toward something. What alternate universe have I stepped into? Please bring back GMs and stop being so lazy, please.

I really don’t understand why they moved these women like weeks before the draft.

That full 180 flip Mandy did to Lana was really cool. Not sure if Lana was meant to land on her left knee or flat, but I think it was supposed to injure her left knee. Beautiful.

Points to Lana for the kickout, negative points to Nattie for jumping in after the three.

I wish Dana had hit a bigger move against Natalya at the end.

The pump knee strike by Mandy was a little messy, I would’ve ended it with her other finisher instead. Good match though. Glad to see Dana and Mandy pick up some sort of momentum, especially on their Raw debut.

Also good for Lana not having to go through the table for a week *applause*

Mandy is fine on the mic. It’s not awful, it’s not super compelling; totally serviceable. Dana though... always comes off like she’s acting rehearsed lines or reading off a script.

Nice transition into the next segment. Quarter point.

Whether I like the Bianca video packages or not, it’s always a pleasure to hear her song.

LOVED the incorporation of the hurdles. That’s what I want to see, that shows me an actual challenge. I have no doubt in her strength or speed; I in fact do believe she’s the strongest and the fastest. They just aren’t showcasing that right lol. Give me something more convincing. Girl was jumping over fucking hurdles, that’s convincing.

A common complaint I have with women - even on the main roster - is how they go to do like a spear halfway through the ropes just to set up some counter to their move (kick, a pump kick, the rope hangup Bayley does, Charlotte shooting through the middle to roll you up) and that’s fine, but it’s always easily telegraphed. Step up please @ everyone.

Cool Rhea came down to fuck with Raquel, distracting Dakota, but the rollup was weak. Also weak that Rhea merely pushed Raquel into the steps once before walking back. Good match though.

Stalemate after a bunch of pin attempts with zero offense. Could live without these spots tbh.

I love Xia Brookside’s music, but not with her or her entrance.

Now Jinny’s entrance/wardrobe/demeanor matches her music.

Sure Xia Brookside’s rolls were quick, but I’m not understanding why she rolled sideways lmao it’s like Link in Zelda.

If you’re not going to add an actual crowd or monitors, get rid of the hairdryer fans. If I can’t see them, and more importantly they don’t exist, then I don’t want to hear them.

Too many wrist locks. Also refs getting involved for no logical reason, just so the heel can take advantage, is annoying.

That back drop onto Jinny’s knee was ugly, hated the collapse. Took the impact out of it for me.

Nasty Irish Whip, points to both.

Nice flip off the hurricanrana.

Botched monkey flip. Perhaps Jinny didn’t think there was enough room for her to comfortably land; had she went for it and tucked her legs she definitely would’ve been fine. Feel like that was an amateur mistake, plenty of women would’ve just sold it with their legs getting caught up.

That was weird. Xia Brookside goes through all that trouble just to make sure she hit the monkey flip, just to lift Jinny’s head so Jinny could punch her. Weak.

Kick out was sloppy.

Xia Brookside is gassed and isn’t even doing any offense. Or selling. This match is odd. This would get booed on the MR.

Jinny stops to talk too much while wrestling. Obviously stalling. The dialogue isn’t even good for all of that noise.

Whatever. A match I could’ve lived without.

Alexa’s pyro was better timed than last week, but it could use improvement. This is important to me damn it.

You know Alexa, my spine feels cold and my body goes numb every time I smoke my weed. Has anyone asked this girl if she’s on drugs? Could just be drugs.

Kevin/wwe, I don’t need you to tell me she’s brainwashed. WE CAN SEE that she’s brainwashed. This has been escalating for like... 2 months lmao.

The hairdryer crowd being piped in kinda ruins this. This is set up like a scene from a horror movie and the noise is taking away from it. A live crowd probably would’ve stayed silent for her, you could’ve lessened the mass effect.

Love how she just sits there watching Kevin pace around. That’s good. She’s good. Love how Kevin knew she was calling to the Fiend with that line. That’s good. This is good.

She sits there poised and unafraid, yet intrigued with him. Like his queen.

The power of this angle and the fate of it succeeding lies solely on Alexa and her selling of it. If she doesn’t sell this or believe in it, or fucks up once, it shatters the entire mystique. Man I’m a huge fan of this story rn.

Glad I didn’t bother guessing who this mysterious woman was. The glitz and glamour has got nothing compared to the moonwalking, trashtalking, Princess of Staten Island.

Love the rainbow on the polaroid camera though.

Decent enough promo but that music was awkward.

Why did y’all make Sasha just stand out there shifting her feet staring at the hard cam lol.

What I don’t like about this feud: Sasha’s still an asshole, and I’m not sure how I’m supposed to buy her as a babyface in like 3 weeks. She has the sympathy vote in a meta sense, sure, and I’ve been saying I want her to run SD on her own since November 2019, but that doesn’t mean she’s automatically a babyface within kf. Also annoying that they haven’t had a brawl that ends on equal footing, via interruption by officials or something. Also not sure how much I buy the character of Bayley being “too scared” to come to SD. If I could’ve gotten a quick interview by her, even if it’s her leaving the arena just as she finds out Sasha has arrived, that would’ve tied this together better.

Okaay! First time ever posting stuff on tumblr. Plz don’t completely tear me apart. ;-; ~~~~~~ Riverdale was a place full of secrets.

Love affairs, abuse, feigned friendships, and now death was being swept under the rug as people went about their days. Not to say that Jason’s death wasn’t the most talked about thing since Polly Cooper got sent away – no. Riverdale just didn’t like to look behind the curtain.

Coming back to a town like that during high school in the middle of the most secret-fill summer in Riverdale’s history was hard. Being Archie Andrews’ cousin was almost harder.

Gwynevere Andrews moved back to her most hated hometown two weeks before Jason’s death. It was rough and confusing due to her moving circumstances but she quickly made friends and melded into the typical Andrews crowd – the football team. It wasn’t that she necessarily wanted to be in that clique. But Archie brought her along to a party and she made friends with the Vixens and flirted with Kevin until she had a safe net to fall into as she started school.

That being said the red head still spent her summer nights at Pops drinking a milkshake and drawing instead of going to any more parties. She wasn’t an ‘it’ girl as much as she ever tried to be. She loved her makeup and glitter as much as the next but she couldn’t force her personality to be like Cheryl’s or even Archie’s. She would milk all of the ‘me’ time she could get.

When school started back up she forced herself back into the parties and after-school hang outs. Swallowing every feeling she felt during summer she made her way into Pop’s after football practice with Kevin’s arm around her and a cheerleader gossiping in her ear. In a booth sat a brooding, quiet boy. He took one glance up, locked eyes with Gwyn, and went back to his typing. The knot in her stomach tried to push her to go talk to him but Kevin had pulled her away too fast. It was probably for the better anyways.

A lot happened that summer. 1.

The school dance was the biggest thing to talk about since the other new girl Veronica showed up. Gwyn had convinced Kevin to take her along since she hadn’t been to a dance before. After getting ready she took one last glance in the mirror. Her hair clung to her face in wild curls, sweeping against her bare shoulders. She had picked out a black strapless dress that fell around her thighs in waves with baby pink mesh fabric under it to make the bottom poof out. But Kevin never came to pick her up. If she was being honest with herself she didn’t even like the boy. He was a tool and she couldn’t hold any conversations with him. She barely even interacted with him even when they were together. It still hurt when he didn’t show, though.

Closer to midnight she made her way to Pop’s for a milkshake. She was going to pout over a strawberry delight and eat her weight in cool-whip if it was the last thing she did. I’m allowed to feel hurt, she kept telling herself, it still sucks to be told you’ll be taken on a date and then blown off.

A ding brought her out of her wallowing and she saw her cousin walk past her. They lived in the same house right now as her mom didn’t have the ability to afford much of anything. Uncle Andrews was kind enough to let his sister and niece crash in the spare room. She knew he had a double date with Veronica and Betty because of this. With the way he was storming around it seemed like he screwed up. Gwyn was personally betting on how long it would take for him to realize Betty liked him. With the look on his face she assumed the topic finally came up.

But her cousin didn’t come sit with her. Instead he stormed over to booth second from the corner and sat down across from the brooding boy. She swallowed hard and went back to her shake. It was probably for best anyways. She didn’t want to listen to him tell her to leave Kevin. Again.

At the second from the corner booth Archie was trying to talk to his used-to-be best friend. “Look man,” he sighed, “I’ve just had a long night.”

He continued to talk, as Archie usually did, and Jughead continued to listen. That was usually how their friendship went. He was fine with that. It was just nice to have Archie talking to him again if he was honest with himself.

The dark haired boy’s mind wandered while his friend rambled. It’s not that he didn’t care about what the other was saying; He was still picking up the conversation while his eyes swept around the diner. It was odd for the two to be sharing a booth together. He didn’t want any uninvited people to interrupt them.

That’s when his eyes landed on the girl with the milkshake all prettied up. He knew her, of course he did, they shared summers together when they were younger after all. She’d grown up since then.

Well, grown might be the wrong word for it. She’s been the same height and weight since she was thirteen. But her body had grown into itself, and the baby fat on her face started melting away to show a softly angled cheekbone and slightly crooked nose. Not that any of it didn’t fit her. If you talked to the girl enough you’d see how her laugh and the sparkle in her eyes fit her features perfectly.

“Hey Arch,” Jughead finally interrupted, “Shouldn’t you make sure your cousin is okay?”

Archie turned around to glance at Gwyn then looked back to Jug, “Nah man. Kevin probably just stood her up. Dunno why they’ve been dating anyways. She always looks so bored when she’s around him. Anyways I should get going. Thanks for listening. And… Sorry about bailing on summer.”

“It’s fine, man,” Jughead responded, “I found something else to keep me busy.”

When Archie made his leave his friend pondered. Should he even bother her? She did look like she needed a friend. But they hadn’t said two words since summer.

He took a deep breath, picked up his laptop, and made his way over, “Hey, can I sit?”

Gwyn nodded, her eyes glued on the straw she was swirling around her drink. It was mostly gone now but Pop was making her another.

“You okay?”

She shrugged this time. She didn’t want to talk about Kevin with Jug. That didn’t feel right to her.

“So… you’ve been with Kevin all summer?” Jughead tried making some sort of conversation. He knew her. When she got like this she didn’t like to talk. You just had to find the topic that would make her want to spill everything she’s bottling.

“Not all summer,” Her eyes met him this time. She was answering a question he didn’t directly ask but she watched the stress fall from his shoulders when she said it.

“Archie said you aren’t really even interested in the guy. I don’t blame you for feeling bad right now but you and he are just very different creatures. Why stay with someone you aren’t even interested in?”

Pop showed up then to take her shake and give her another. She thanked him and started drinking down the strawberry as she looked Jughead over. She was thankful he was here with her even if she didn’t know how to say it.

“Gwyn… how many shakes have you had?”

“Uh…” She gave another smile, “That’s a loaded question.”

“Oh my god you’re the same twelve year old that would attempt to drink her weight in milkshakes. That’s very unhealthy.”

“That’s not true. These have low-fat whipped cream on them,” She defended as she ate the entire swirl of whipped cream off of her drink.

“Not that you need it,” He retorted, “I’ll still pay. Not like the money would go towards anything else useful.”

They sat in silence for a while after that. Jughead didn’t object to her ordering more milkshakes. They stayed there for a few hours making small talk and eventually having races to see who could drink their shake faster.

Pop was kind enough to half off the order for them when they finally paid and left. Gwyn tried to walk home by herself but Jughead wouldn’t take no for an answer.

Giving her his jacket is what won her over. She used to always take his hoodies when they were younger. He always smelled of sandalwood and it stuck to his clothes. It was a calming scent.
