Hola, volvi...

My (loose) 2023 reading goals
I often think I should read a specific author or genre and then I forget about it, so this started as me just writing that down and then evolved into 10 goals that I’d love to do in 2023 in regards to my reading!
Read at least three Astrid Lindgren novels. I live in Sweden and grew up with her stories, but haven’t read many of them myself and would love to dive into her work more properly. I’m thinking her very first published book, one of her more popular ones, and then maybe one I’ve not been exposed to as much (aka not seen the movie).
More classics. This is mostly so that I can write down books I randomly remember I wanna read (especially if I don’t own them) and will work as a place to write down those random ideas.
Some more current books, both in Swedish and English. I enjoy looking at longlists to book prizes and just pick out a book or two to read. That way I get exposed to books I probably wouldn’t have read since the market is jam packet right now and I need to see a book A LOT to start paying attention.
Queer YA. Look, I miss these types of books. They’re not my type of stories anymore, but I really miss them and I’d love to read a couple this year just for the memories and because they’re usually fun. I have The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School specifically on the list right now.
My tumblr followers’ recs. I think I have five right now! It’s just a fun way to find new authors I’ve probably not read before.
“Who I strive to be” shelf, at least six books. It’s just a shelf of nonfiction that I feel like someone I wanna be would read lol. Someone intelligent and cool. It’s got Audre Lorde and James Baldwin and Joan Didion on it, among others.
Read more poetry. Listen, I have a complicated relationship with it and I think I need to stop thinking I NEED to read full collections for it to count. A poem here and there is fine, especially if it’s different types of poetry too.
Classic queer books. Not necessarily old classics, but more as in books that have played a big role of the queer community, if that makes sense? Like the OG books from the 80s and 90s. I don’t even know if there ARE any of those, but I feel like there are and I want to see if I can find a list or something and read a couple of them.
Classic children’s books. I just never grew up reading those and I’d like to catch up a lil. Also I’m writing a children’s book which is inspired by an old classic and I’d like to read more of them for the sake of that.
More (queer) historical romance. They’re so fun, I love them. Will specifically read more from Cat Sebastian!
That’s it so far! I like that it’s not super focused on specific books, but more about genres and authors and whatnot. And I can move things around and change them if I want to, since it’s not super strict. I just went from having really set goals a few years go to having no goals because I was burned out and now I’d like to have looser goals because I think it’s still good to have something to work toward. What are your reading goals/plans for this year?

Mexico Pride 2023
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
After a two week long (or so) hiatus from this website, I'm finally feeling good enough to write about one of the best experiences of my life 🖤 I'd like to remark that this was my first pride ever :D and I got to share it with my gf 🖤🖤
(Note: Placing the face of the love of my life's fursona over her real one as requested by her.)
Pictures were kinda rushed due to lack of time and extreme fatigue after the parade/protest march (?), but I really wanted to show part of my emo-ish outfit and the flags and pins I bought. My love did my make-up and I liked it so much that I decided to roll with it instead of the usual dense eyeliner style. I'm close to completing my dream emo outfit tho 🖤
Now, I'll mention the highlights of our day:
A girl and a guy (Maybe a couple or only friends, idk) asked us if we were selling flags because we were holding 3 of them and since they saw we were young they wanted to know if we accepted credit card as a payment form. Needless to say we weren't selling anything XD
A gay guy was running cheerfully through the streets and when he stopped abruptly to avoid crashing onto us he took a quick glance and exclaimed "Fuck yeah, long live the lesbians!" (¡A huevo, vivan las lesbianas!)
I didn't notice but my dear told me one gal in a group of alt styled girls was really excited to see the My Chemical Romance shirt I was wearing, to the point of fangirling.
There is always a concert with many queer artists at the city centre, the final destination of the march, but feeling very tired after walking a very long distance we decided to leave early. We had something to drink, like tepache (fermented non-alcoholic pineapple juice) and horchata water but neither of those tasted as good as we thought.
I must say, before arriving at the march we were very nervious, especially me, because I'm AMAB and was dressing fairly femenine, so we thought we would have an unpleasant experience with a violent person before arriving, as we had to stop at a mall first to get lunch. Fortunately nothing happened while we were on our way and our worries vanished instantly when we finally got out of the bus and stepped on the avenue with our queer peers 🖤🖤🖤. My darling even got overwhelmed of joy and teared up a bit. We felt protected and were very happy to see there are a whole lot of more people like us than we are really aware of.
Being this the first time we attended, we didn't prepare properly with signs expressing our concerns regarding LGBTQ+ rights because we wanted to observe first. The protest is there but the execution is more parade-like, of course without missing it's goal. Next year we'll honor the first motivation of the march as it's meant to be.
Truly a blissful experience that we want to repeat every year for as long as its needed 🖤

It’s March 20th which means it’s day 1 of the #transrightsreadathon Excited to hopefully read Out of the Blue by Jason June and The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes over the course of this readathon as I’ve had them in my physical tbr for a while! Also excited for my kindle options (on the second slide)! If somehow I finish all those (I’ve been reading pretty slow recently so it’ll be a toss up) I’m planning to do a reread of Café con Lychee by Emery Lee and of The Tea Dragon Collection from K. O’Neill. Excited about all the other books that people have been talking about leading up to this readathon and have been adding soooo many books to my tbr! Other than books I’m hoping to share accounts/posts that have a donation goal for the readathon! You should check out @sim_bookstagrams_badly, the one who started the whole idea of the readathon and has been/is still fundraising! The Lesbiana's Guide to Catholic School by Sonora Reyes - Review
Tumblr media
No. Yamilet did not plan to get outed by her best friend to her entire friend group. That item had not even been close to being added to her to-do list. She blames this on the fact that it is pretty hard t guess your best friend is going to turn out to be a homophobic overlord. The only option left now is moving on, turning the page, a fresh start at the way too fancy, way too white Slayton Catholic School. This is totally fine. She just needs to convince everyone she’s straight, take care of her family’s expectations, and of course not fall for the very pretty, very gay girl in her class. Everything is totally fine.
Positives :
-L-E-S-B-I-A-N: if there is something this book does exceptionally well is representation. I cannot personally speak to the Chinese and Mexican portrayal but I can personally speak to the general Latine aspects, the lesbian experience and a catholic upbringing. The small callbacks to culture, the dynamics within latine families and the feeling surrounding that felt so accurate to me. Seeing the intersection between being Latina and lesbian without having to chose what I get representation for was something I desperatly needed. This book was loud and unapologetic in a way that I know will help young queer people with their own identities. It feels cathardic to see the journey of our main character Yamilet (even if we narrow it down to something as simple as the use of the word lesbian) and the one of the side characters as well. It was really lovely to see a book like this.
-Sike: there are always certain expectations that we hold when we start reading a new book, be it positive or negative, about the characters or plot. They are always there.I have to admit I was doubtful about this book when I started it because of past experiences with books with Latine characters. I was especially certain about the way in which I thought character arcs were going to go (not in a good way), yet the author met me with wonderful surprises in almost every turn, twisting my expectations and stereotypes with grace.
-Haha: this book was fun. It was easy to sit down, open it and enjoy it for long periods of time. The characters were funny and charming, there was good chemistry between them. I often dislike main characters, almost on principle, but Yamilet and her narration never seemed to grow tiresome. I loved her and her particular brand of humor in the face of adversity, she felt very genuine. The author managed to make me root for her and her goals.
Negatives :
-Pov : No: it is written from a first person perspective. There, I said it. I will give credit where credit is due, first person perspective is incredibly hard to write for a novel. Sadly, Reyes was not able to pull it off properly. as easy as it was to read, the writing was oftentimes clunky and unprofessional, the sentences seemed cut off and undescriptive. The voice of the character was not well defined at points and it felt like a stream of consciousness in a way that lacked edition.
-Alright then: even with all the pleasant surprises and bed stereotypes there was still a high degree of predictability to the plot. This is not necessarily a big flaw if you are looking for a cute and emotionally effective story, but it is worth noting.
-Yes, we get it: this is more a personal issue I have (specially with the publishing industry in general), but the whole book had a very similar cadence and plot to other contemporary YA books written by Latine authors, it struggled to stand out.
