Reading Goal for 2023!
My goal for this year is simply to read all of my unread books from pre-2023, though I may potentially exclude Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell because it's so long.
Setting my Storygraph goal at 82 books as that's how many unread books I have now, but that will change throughout the year. When I read a book that's not on the "official" list, I'll increase the goal amount so that I still "win" only when I've finished the whole TBR shelf (the alternate option is to not track non-TBR books on Storygraph, but that would be a pain to deal with).

My actual tbr shelf for 2023- the 28 unread books in my house all in their own place (I have donated any others that I just know I’ll never read!)
I have massively splurged on books since moving house and being within 10 minutes walk of 7 bookshops, so am going to try exceedingly hard to read all of these before I get anything new

2023 Is Here! (Reading Goals)
Happy New Year!!
I hope everyone had a lovely entrance to 2023 and has a joyful year full of the things and people you love. May it be better than the last, in every single way!
In my case, after giving my brain a break in 2022, I am BACK with all of my goals and my detailed lists, including, of course, reading ones. So here are my 10 goals for 2023:
Reading (at least) 55 books (follow me along in GR & SG!)
12 books in French
12 books in Spanish
12 non-fiction books
12 LGBTQ+ books
12 books by European writers (excluding British ones)
12 books by African/Afro-Caribbean writers
12 books by Asian writers
4 books by writers from Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, etc.)
4 books by Latin American writers
You could ostensibly go, "Andrea, why the focus on the continents/nationalities of the authors?" to which I would answer the same thing as I do every year: I read a lot of US/UK writers. Like, a lot. Easily 95% of my yearly reading is taken up by US-UK writers. Which is GREAT, don't get me wrong, and if I didn't like them I would simply not read them -but it also means that there are a lot of vital experiences and narratives that I miss out on. I want to expand my reading pool and discover new authors and new ways of telling stories, and if to do that I need to literally sit down with a list of all the countries in Europe and start researching writers I will do that. Just hand me a map and some pins, we're reading the world this year!
To begin with, I'm tackling two books that I bring over from 2022:
L'énigme de la chambre 622 - Joël Dicker [GR] -> I've been reading this for a week now but it's super long and it's in French, so it'll take me a good ten days more probably...
Ship of Magic (Liveship Traders #1) - Robin Hobb [GR] -> I started reading this end of October, read about 20%, and didn't touch it again. I'm finishing this in January come what may, I can't keep lugging it around!
As always, I'm open to any and all recs you may have, but in the meantime, tell me -what are your 2023 goals, if you have any? How is the year looking?

Books 73-78 read in 2023.
The last reading roundup of the year.
LOST IN THE MOMENT AND FOUND by Seanan McGuire
MISLAID IN PARTS HALF-KNOWN by Seanan McGuire
The great 2023 Reread of the ENTIRE Wayward Children series was so much fun. I see so much of myself & my loves in these books, which is, I think, the entire point.
THE DEEP SKY by Yume Kitasei
A Very Queer, Who Done It, Locked Room, in Deep Space. Delightful.
WALK AMONG US, a Vampire: The Masquerade anthology
I loved one of the novellas. I liked one a lot. And I'm undecided about the third, as I keep thinking about it, but it makes me frustrated, and yet sometimes that's the point of art.
WHAT FEASTS AT NIGHT by T. Kingfisher
Nonbinary. Spooky. Trauma. I loved it. T. Kingfisher is my current Have a Great Time Reading author.
NIGHT SIDE OF THE RIVER by Jeanette Winterson
Technically I'm still reading this, but End of the Year, blah blah blah. It's been a while since I've read a Jeanette Winterson book, and I'm as in love with her writing as I was back in college. Spooky, literary stories for Yuletide.

Attempting a bullet journal style reading journal for this year. I don’t have neat enough handwriting and I want to invest in more supplies but this is what I have set up so far. I also gave myself a low goal because even though I read a lot last year, I’m still recovering from barely reading at all since high school.

My (loose) 2023 reading goals
I often think I should read a specific author or genre and then I forget about it, so this started as me just writing that down and then evolved into 10 goals that I’d love to do in 2023 in regards to my reading!
Read at least three Astrid Lindgren novels. I live in Sweden and grew up with her stories, but haven’t read many of them myself and would love to dive into her work more properly. I’m thinking her very first published book, one of her more popular ones, and then maybe one I’ve not been exposed to as much (aka not seen the movie).
More classics. This is mostly so that I can write down books I randomly remember I wanna read (especially if I don’t own them) and will work as a place to write down those random ideas.
Some more current books, both in Swedish and English. I enjoy looking at longlists to book prizes and just pick out a book or two to read. That way I get exposed to books I probably wouldn’t have read since the market is jam packet right now and I need to see a book A LOT to start paying attention.
Queer YA. Look, I miss these types of books. They’re not my type of stories anymore, but I really miss them and I’d love to read a couple this year just for the memories and because they’re usually fun. I have The Lesbiana’s Guide to Catholic School specifically on the list right now.
My tumblr followers’ recs. I think I have five right now! It’s just a fun way to find new authors I’ve probably not read before.
“Who I strive to be” shelf, at least six books. It’s just a shelf of nonfiction that I feel like someone I wanna be would read lol. Someone intelligent and cool. It’s got Audre Lorde and James Baldwin and Joan Didion on it, among others.
Read more poetry. Listen, I have a complicated relationship with it and I think I need to stop thinking I NEED to read full collections for it to count. A poem here and there is fine, especially if it’s different types of poetry too.
Classic queer books. Not necessarily old classics, but more as in books that have played a big role of the queer community, if that makes sense? Like the OG books from the 80s and 90s. I don’t even know if there ARE any of those, but I feel like there are and I want to see if I can find a list or something and read a couple of them.
Classic children’s books. I just never grew up reading those and I’d like to catch up a lil. Also I’m writing a children’s book which is inspired by an old classic and I’d like to read more of them for the sake of that.
More (queer) historical romance. They’re so fun, I love them. Will specifically read more from Cat Sebastian!
That’s it so far! I like that it’s not super focused on specific books, but more about genres and authors and whatnot. And I can move things around and change them if I want to, since it’s not super strict. I just went from having really set goals a few years go to having no goals because I was burned out and now I’d like to have looser goals because I think it’s still good to have something to work toward. What are your reading goals/plans for this year?

My 2023 Reading Goals
1. Reread more
2. Books on non-people creatures (animals, trees, rivers, etc)
3. At least a 2:1 ratio of English:Japanese books
4a. Older books, fewer new releases. It expands both my writing skills and my understanding of the world.
4b. Books by authors I already know I love, e.g. Virginia Woolf, Octavia Butler, Amitav Ghosh, Gabriel Garcia Marquez
5. Read books I already own
6. #readJewishJoy
7. While I will read Jewish joy, I also have a list of Holocaust-related books I want to read, including Paul Celan's later poetry and a nonfiction book about becoming a Holocaust educator
8. Continue last year's nonfiction journey with more books on Maoism and Stalinism. The 20th century was wild and wretched in ways that I can't grasp no matter how much I study it, but I'll keep trying
9. Read craft books about writing, in English and Japanese
10. More poetry, in E/J. Again, it makes me a better writer, of both E/J
I see a lot of people's reading goals this year are to focus less on new releases and more on what's already sitting on their shelves. I feel like 2022 was a breakthrough year when we all became more aware of the negative effects of social media, and I think that, while supporting emerging authors is absolutely wonderful, readers active on the internet are thinking more critically right now about how the internet influences their reading and shopping choices.

Miscalculated my earlier TBR post, there are in fact 32!
I’m currently in the middle of The Goblin Emperor (ebook), Possession (Audio + paperback) and Go Tell It On The Mountain (paperback) and so far this Jan have finished Guards! Guards! And Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde.
To set a stricter goal, I’m going to donate any of these that I haven’t read by the end of 2023, I’m pretty sure I’ve moved house twice with some of them. Any opinions about what to start once one of my current reads is finished?
