beach day and moby dick
i've always wanted to read moby dick near the sea for the vibes or smth so i intentionally put off starting the book until i had my next trip to the beach. loved it! but i wanted to savor the book so i didn't speedrun it, and it is a really long book.

I looked at all the trees and didn’t know what to do.
A box made out of leaves. What else was in the woods? A heart, closing. Nevertheless.
Everyone needs a place. It shouldn’t be inside of someone else. I kept my mind on the moon. Cold moon, long nights moon.
From the landscape: a sense of scale. From the dead: a sense of scale.
I turned my back on the story. A sense of superiority. Everything casts a shadow.
Your body told me in a dream it’s never been afraid of anything.
― Richard Siken, ‘Detail of the Woods’

Just finished this: 5/5
I liked this classic way more than Dracula, it should be equally popular. The setting was described amazingly and I liked the pacing and storytelling. Definitely a rec for everyone who likes horror or homoeroticism between women.

u know what makes me cry..... that one van gogh quote about life changing for the better..... “many people seem to think it foolish, even superstitious, to believe that the world could still change for the better. and it is true that in winter it is sometimes so bitingly cold that one is tempted to say, ‘what do i care if there is a summer; its warmth is no help to me now.’ yes, evil often seems to surpass good. but then, in spite of us, and without our permission, there comes at last an end to the bitter frosts. one morning the wind turns, and there is a thaw. and so i must still have hope.” yeah..... Crying....
