Good god the Magia Record anime's ending was disappointing as hell. I knew the ending was bad and the basics of what it resulted in, but it was so much worse actually sitting down and watching it.
And I really couldn't wrap my head around some of the angsty existential philosophy stuff the last 2 eps were trying to get across.
It makes me worried for the game for a variety of reasons.
And there really was no point to Kuroe existing was there? No reason at all. Kuroe fans I'm so sorry, you deserved better.
It's such a shame that for a lot of people, and arguably for SHAFT themselves, that the anime's ending is the definitive canon one for this story when the game is so much better.
I was so frustrated back during Season 1 when people were like "What's the point? We know the universe ends with Homura resetting or Madoka rewriting the universe, this is pointless". I was so excited for the finale and to tell them "NO YOU'RE WRONG THIS TAKES PLACE AFTER MADOKAMI SHE'S GONNA HELP THIS TIMELINE SURVIVE AND STOP WITCHES".
And then. Well.
The fact that the story seemed so beholden to SHAFT's abysmal budget, at least in part (judging by how they didn't even show Walpurgisnacht and that the final battle against Embryo and Alina Eve was. Like That.), is just so upsetting. I don't know if they could have found a workaround to that - delay each season longer to give them more time to be worked on? In addition to the declining animation quality, it sometimes felt like the writing was only a first or second draft. If they had more time, they could have done what they wanted?
But how would they have gotten more money if the game, assuming the game's money was partially funding the anime, wasn't enough? Does this mean the game really is starting to fail? Is the game failing for its own faults, and/or did/was the anime make it worse?
AND WE STILL DON'T HAVE THE ENGLISH DUB AFTER SEASON 1??????!!?!!!!!??

I'll give credit where credit is due for the SnK dub
they're trying their best
now I made a post a couple of weeks ago about my feelings on dubs. I don't like to be an ignorant person, and I think I have bias when it comes to the dubs I like (inuyasha and death note mainly) bc they were amongst the first animes I ever watched and so chose the dubs for easier viewing, and I came out thinking they were really well made, and couldn't understand any people that criticised them
and that's how it is. if you get used to something, its hard to accept it any other way. I remember when the Kuroshitsuji dub came out and I thought it was horrendous, only for people who had never seen Kuro go and watch the dub version and end up loving it.
ok, well here's the thing. this is where dub va's lose me.
when I can tell they don't care. not about the show, characters or fans. when I can tell they've done no research. when I can tell they're just looking for a paycheck.
when SnK s1 came out, I felt that. I really did. the voices sounded so off-putting. they didn't match the characters at all. and I still fully believe that the American VA's didn't give a shit.
until season 2.
I think they realised that the show they were voicing was actually special to millions of people, and upped their game. and after watching SnK dub fully, there's not a single voice I'd say is terrible. and I used to think Eren's was the worst of all (mostly bc Kaji Yuki absolutely embraced the role so brilliantly).
but the American VA (Bryce) calmed down his overdramatic Power Ranger voice and actually made Eren sound like a normal, but thoroughly flawed human filled with anguish, anger, desperation and vengeance flowing through him. I commend him for it and appreciate that he really tried his best.
Levi ofc they had to choose a super hot guy voice lmao I do like it, it suits his age.
some people who have seen both the dub and sub have some faves from each. to me, the sub voices are all better, in every way. but the dub VA's did exactly what they were supposed to (post-season 1)
had I watched the dub first, maybe I'd prefer it. I don't know. I do prefer Death Note dub, but that's bc I watched it first. some think Light sounds too dramatic in the dub, and I get it, but I love how Light talks in the dub, its iconic.
and yes, dubs just sound more dramatic and a little less organic in general.
but with SnK, I'd still recommend people watch the sub. bc with this show, specifically, if it doesn't sound organic, it can make the viewing experience a lot less enjoyable. the Japanese VA's give that perfect amount of seriousness. the American VA's just don't quite hit the mark, but I appreciate how well they tried

Today, Strike Back (The Last Battle of Shadowmoth pt.2) aired, making 26 episodes that have aired so far and season 4 complete!
WE DID IT EVERYBODY!!! FAREWELL TO SEASON 4!!!
I have to say... I definitely had a lot more fun with this season than season 3, both viewing wise and blog wise! The follower jump was INSANE, and what with the ml waiting gang, regular anons, and silly little inside jokes, the community we built has made this blog all the more meaningful for me!! It’s been a blast as always, so... here’s to this blog’s third year running and 2nd completed season (and my personal 6th year with miraculous... As for what im doing during the hiatus... I'll make a FAQ and a pinned post soon! ;)
But now that we’ve come to a close, let me just leave you, for the last time, with the....

Did you already watch the season finale or are you waiting for the eng dub? Tell us what you think about it :)
Yes! I watched the Gloob one as it aired and have watched the English dub now as well.
I'm still processing it, but first impression is that I enjoyed it! It really upped the tension and conflict that Risk established and gave some really good uninhibited character interractions.
I'm also glad that they resolved a lot of what needed to be resolved and left certain things open that could linger some more.
And the Ladynoir! The Ladrien! Some hella good food this episode! I love that Ladynoir finally got to have an openly verbal spat with each other and put out in the open their worries and fears.
Tumblr media
I was a little disappointed at the end of Kuro Neko and didn't like the idea of that being the conflict all wrapped but, so I'm glad that it all came back in the finale. Because things weren't okay. They'd just been put aside until Risk forced them to say it aloud. And yeah they had a fight, but they still protected each other and had each other's back. Ladybug was angry over Chat not understanding her reasoning (in her mind it was sound, but she clearly still withheld stuff from him so it objectively wasn't) and then later on grew panicked that she had lost everything. Why would Chat come back to her when she had pushed him away and tried to control everything? When (in her mind) she had screwed up so badly this time? And she admits that!
Tumblr media
She admits that her methods weren't ideal, even if the intention was good! Even though it took such a devastating blow, she realised that not relying on Chat has only caused problems and not actually helped anything, its only helped on hypothetical situations. She realises she got too involved in her own sense of control and trying to managed every what if scenario that she lost sight of the one who has been her most dependable and faithful partner. (I'm not complaining about Rena/Alya here. She has her role as Marinette's bff, but she cannot replace Chat/Adrien - the one who's been there from the beginning and got Ladybug to her feet every time.) I'm so proud she was able to recognise it, even if it came at such a low moment.
And then Adrien is clearly hurt by the involvement of Flairmidable (still trying to get my head around that. I keep going - furmidable? Furminator? Felix the furminator?) He knew a few of the other holders, but this is another one that is secret to him - and one Ladybug seemed very fond of at first. But while Adrien can be jealous and a little petty - he is not vindictive. So when Ladybug is breaking down in front of him as she becomes overwhelmed at her mistake and Felix's betrayal, he comforts hers, protects her and guides her as her partner always has.
Tumblr media
And when she sits alone on the roof as Hawkmoth flaunts his victory, Chat takes his place at her side. Her ever loyal partner. They've both made mistakes, they've both fought with each other, but they still love each other so much and will always come back to each other and offer support no matter what they're facing. And Ladybug now fully realised this. The coup de foudre isn't her suddenly falling in love with Chat like she had Adrien, it's the culmination of all that she knows about her partner and just how much he means to her becoming too much to ignore. Adrien rejected her expectation of being a mean person like Chloe by showing his kindness and vulnerability. But now Chat has rejected her assumption that he would give up on her by remaining faithfully loyal to her.
Tumblr media
She's fallen so low but he helps her stand again and see her surroundings, that she's not alone. Also the wall is fucking gone! It's a beautiful scene and I am still sobbing over it.
This season has left me feral. I can no longer be reintroduced to society for I am a love square mess and will bite/scream/cry/laugh every time I think of them now.

My Thoughts on the KNB English Dub (Season 2)
if you haven’t seen my thoughts on season 1 yet, here’s a link here!
Taken from my season 1 post:
Of course, I prefer watching sub over dub for anime series, but I’m no stranger to the English VA industry, as I’ve played huge RPG games with fantastic English dub casts! I guess I’m mentioning this here to let you know that I’m quite impartial to the dub vs sub fiasco, and if it sounds good or not I’ll say it as such
- first off: the opening for the winter cup arc is different where they used scenes to indicate the yosen match with seirin instead of showing Kuroko’s ignite pass kai. LOVE this new opening more, it’s way more dynamic and so cool while showing off all of the Seirin members in action instead of just Kuroko???
- KAGAMI sounds so much better in season 2!! omg, he sounds really identical to the sub and I’m living for it god bless, he truly sounds like he hails from america LMAO
- Kuroko REALLY SHINES when he gets super passionate when talking about winning after Imayoshi told him “try again next year” in a nutshell like that GRIT IN THE VOICE CHEF KISS
- can we literally talk about the goldmine of the Seirin team, including the benchers?? THEIR BANTER IS SO UNMATCHED AND HILARIOUS I LITERALLY DAMN NEAR PEED MY PANTS LAUGHING (listen to the dialogues in the background esp when the bench players start saying random shit LMAO)
- shoutout to Furihata, Izuki, and Koganei in the dub 10000000/10
- Teppei and Hyuga get their own honorable mentions because damn they are so damn good in the dubs, their interactions/dialogue/chemistry in the dub is, even dare I say, better than the sub
- I lied, Izuki also gets an honorable mention for his puns, I actually find them so funny, someone help me----????
- I’m literally so glad the dub actually highlights how truly weird Teppei is; most people just completely overlook his actual character because there’s only so much subs can do to convey his weird oddities (aka I’m tired of these Teppei fics misrepresenting and butchering his character 😭)
- I knew GREATNESS was gonna happen when Robbie Daymond was gonna voice Murasakibara; sure it’s not “deep enough” like the sub, but to be fair, the dub’s voice fits his childishness so damn well like the “quadrabrow” line on Kagami still sends me to NO END or when he gets pouty and petulant, the dub nails it 100% “what’s going on with your eyebrows dude? why do they like... split?” when he says “Kuro-chin” WHEN KUROKO MADE THE SHOT PAST HIM, IT SOUNDED SO IDENTICAL AND OMG--? And WHEN HE ANGRILY SAYS “KAGAMI”?? AND WHEN HE GETS MAD IN THE GAME AND PLAYS OFFENSIVE, HE SOUNDS UGH CHEFS KISS DIVINE
- Aomine’s voice is okay, I like it---the dialogue they give him is so fucking funny, this man roasts people while he’s trying to explain what’s happening on the court, i-- (SOUNDS AMAZING when hes on the court esp Seirin vs Touou game)
- MIDORIMA ALSO TRULY IMPROVED HIS DUB PERFORMANCE IN SEASON 2!!! HIM AND TAKAO TOGETHER BANTERING IS ALSO FUNNY AS SHIT IN THE DUB, i literally ASCEND when these two get screentime
- Kise.... kise.... my baby... I’ve grown to have mixed feelings about you in the dub-- one moment, he gives me not enough theatrics and sounds a bit serious at times, the next moment, especially when he’s getting his ass beat by Kasamatsu complaining about something, or when he’s flustered in hearing how Kasamatsu said Seirin was done for in the Touou game, he sounds SUPER GOOD----the pronunciations of the (name)-cchi’s... it hurts every time, but I understand the voice director was trying to adhere to the anglosaxon english pronunciations of the Japanese names (happens to nearly all dubs regardless sadly :((, so I can’t fault the voice actor here) actually, dub Kise gives me more of manga Kise vibes more than anything (the mangaka might favor the dub casting more for Kise in that case) Momoicchi Aominicchi and Akashicchi sound fine though, it’s just Kurokocchi sounds janky
- dub Hanamiya,..... took me by surprise, whoever casted for his dub needs a damn raise... thats all I’ll say before @seijurosempress decides to have any funny ideas about Hanamiya being the “perfect one for me” (i will strangle you)
- dub Hara 14/10, that’s all I’ll say
- dub Imayoshi..... when he gets all low and sinister and schemey, my heart stops, my pants drop, and my breathing stops (.... I wish his voice was deeper...especially when he speaks all politely and cheery normally.......... Just... a bit, please....) -- mixed feelings about him :(( i cant believe I like dub Hanamiya more--
- HELP WHY IS THE DUB FOR RIKO’S DAD MF ZHONGLI AND SHIDO I CANT TAKE THIS MAN SERIOUSLY IM SERIOUSLY LAUGHING
- I’M SO HAPPY WITH DUB SAKURAI, I TRUST GRIFFIN BURNS WITH MY ENTIRE HEART WHEN IT COMES TO PERFORMANCE
- Moriyama sounds great too?? he sounds super good
- Alex deadass just sounds the same I’m shocked LMAO (edit: i searched her seiyuu up, it’s the EXACT SAME VA HOLY SHIT)
- HIMURO’S DUB WHEN HE CALLED OUT “Please stop your deeply-problematic habit” WHEN SHE TRIED TO SMOOCH HIM ON SIGHT HELP THE DUB JUST CALLS IT OUT SO GOOD // his voice is so smooth, elegant, and deep-- when he calls out “Atsushi” in a panic in the game he sounds THE SAME?? EMOTIONAL HIMURO AFTER HE PUNCHES MURASAKIBARA SOUNDS SO GOOD I CANT BREATHE
- YOSEN MEMBERS’ AND THE COACH DUB MWAH THEY’RE SO GOOD (Liu sounds abnormally deep tho wtf but oh well)
- Akashi... I can’t put my finger on him yet? I can’t find the episode where he first debuts in the beginning of the Winter Cup because gogoanime can’t replay those early episodes... and I don’t have netflix... because yeah I don’t have money--BUT ANYWAYS, my opinion of him is currently “inoffensive” but we’ll see in season 3? pssssst if anyone in the US wants to help me out with the netflix plugin.......
- I would just love to add in the appreciation for the translators and localizers for the dub? I know my subtitles near 95% (I kinda have to when I write dialogue for characters), and near all of them are exactly on the money. Sometimes the dub matches the subtitles word for word too which is insanely impressive given the lip flaps and timing of the dialogue---but yeah hats off to the cast who worked on the dub!! We shall see in season 3 and the last game movie (if i can find and access them;;) how the dub performs~~

Detective Conan Japanese Video and Script for Episodes 77-78 (Left) versus Case Closed English Video and Script for Episodes 77-78 (Right)
[Image descriptions: Two scenes are compared. In the first, in Japanese, Heiji says, “I said ‘Kuro’! As in, ‘thanks for your hard work!’” As he says this, the words “kuro” and “gokurou,” written in Japanese (くろう and ご苦労), appear beside him. In English, this is localized as, “Oh, ho! No! I didn’t say ‘Kudo!’ I said, ‘Judo!’ Because I started taking lessons!” As he says this, the words “Kudo” and “Judo” appear beside him. In the second scene, in Japanese, Heiji says, “No, I said ‘Kudoi (annoying)!’” As he says this, the word “kudoi,” written in Japanese (くどい), appears beside him. This is localized in English as, “What? I didn’t call Conan ‘Kudo’! I said ‘Kiddo’! Kid-do!” As he says this, the word “kiddo” appears beside him. End image descriptions.]
I mentioned a bit ago that I inadvertently purchased bootleg copies of FUNimation’s S.A.V.E. Case Closed DVDs and have been working on replacing the fakes with genuine releases.
And here’s something interesting: several of FUNimation’s original art box sets for the series include both Japanese and English video options for the actual episodes, not just the title cards, logos, and ending credits. This means that, for select episodes, you can watch with name boxes and other Japanese text translated/localized into English:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[Image descriptions: A comparison between the Japanese video for Episode 1 of Detective Conan and the English video for Episode 1 of Case Closed. In the Japanese version, Ran’s introduction is accompanied with a blue box that includes her name in Japanese, as well as the fact that she’s a second-year student at Teitan High. In English, the box is a darker color and only includes her localized name, Rachel. End image descriptions.]
No alternate video options are carried over into the full-season sets released later, which I think is a huge shame. If you’re watching the English dub, which heavily localizes various instances of wordplay across the show, there are many times when the Japanese video makes absolutely no sense with the English script. Episodes 14, 21, 116-117, and 123 especially come to mind, which is also a huge shame because none of these cases were among those select few that did have an alternate video option in the earlier releases.
Also, as a subtitler who is passionate about subtitles, I love that the discs with alternate video options come with separate subtitles for the English dub script, too. This is much better accessibility for any translated show, but it’s particularly great in Case Closed, which can differ significantly from Detective Conan.
Plus, this makes it so much easier to share some of my favorite dub lines. Sad that I’ll never have a genuine screenshot of the “pizza bagel” bit, though.
In any case, I learned all this information from MagicBox, at Magic’s Detective Agency, which is an absolutely fantastic resource for all things Case Closed. There are script comparisons, detailed DVD descriptions, and a wonderfully hilarious account of Case Closed 101, along with other valuable commentary about Conan’s English-language scene. You can read more about the original FUNimation volumes here, and the seasonal sets are described here.
I really wish I had known about the site sooner! Though my seasonal set was a phony, it is a close copy of the real things, and just as the real things, with those, I only had access to the (mostly) Japanese video, without any other options. I wrongly assumed that all the DVDs were like this and made my own edit of the scenes at the top of this post—I desperately wanted to see how it would have looked with properly matching visuals. I’m thrilled to know that pros did a fabulous job, but I’m also sad that I was so unaware. If only I did my research before, I could have been saved a painstaking edit that doesn’t even hold a candle to the real deal!
However, one thing I will say about the particular volume that includes these episodes—Case 5, Volume 4: “The Phantom Thief Kid”—is that, unlike other volumes with alternate video options, there are two entirely different video tracks here as opposed to two separate angles. This means that if you select the English dub, you can only watch with the edited English video, and in the same way, if you select the Japanese audio, you can only watch with the Japanese video. And maybe that’s reasonable; after all, I have been talking about how nonsensical the English dub can be when paired with the original Japanese footage.
But it’s a bit of a bummer for me because my preferred, most favorite way to watch this show is with the English dub and English subtitles translating the original Japanese script. This way, I get to enjoy the charming dub without missing anything adapted out of it. With the two separate video tracks, I can’t mix and match like I can in other volumes. You only get English dub subtitles for the English dub and English video, and you only get the Japanese script subtitles for the Japanese audio and Japanese video.
I’m sure I have some .srt or .ass files I could use somewhere in my 5GB-and-7,000-files “DC Subs” folder, but I’m still disappointed that it isn’t all integrated like previous volumes. I realize that’s a really personal complaint, though.
Anyway, tl;dr, the original volumes were pretty great, and I wish that the seasonal releases included more of their content. It was wonderful to see such a nice edit of the wordplay here.

Romero and Julie (Act I: Truths and Lies)
A/N: Thought of it while I was looking up K-on’s romeo and juliet episode and accidentally typed “Romero”.
...I know i have so many wips, but this will most likely be a 2-shot or a 3. It’s not going to drag on that long. I think... I believe...
... I think...
...5 chaps at most?
Also, this story is as sloppily written as that search prompt, so I apologize. (I keep writing romeo as romero for some reason.) I don’t know how to write anymore, it seems. Also, I didn’t reread this for checks. Sorry again. I just... yeeted this out as soon as the last word was in place. Anyway,
Enjoy?
~Shintori Khazumi
Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
   A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventur'd piteous overthrows
Doth with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which but their children's end naught could remove,
   Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;
The which, if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to me-
“I can’t believe the utter bullshit I’ve just read.”
“Lady Claudine!” Mahiru gasped, unable to believe the words she’d just heard coming from the noble lady sat across her.
“Oh, come now, Mahiru. You can’t tell me you actually like this piece of work?” Claudine sighed, shutting the book and placing it on the table. She stared at the cover a few minutes more before pushing it away from her in disgust.
“Hmm? I don’t get it. It is a piece? And it is a work?” Mahiru’s escort cocked her head to the side in confusion, giving Claudine a look that requested clarification.
“Dame Karen.” Claudine sighed, resting her elbows on the table and propping her head up in her hands.  She ignored Mahiru’s wide eyes at her ill-mannered display and went on with her exchange with the female knight. “I’m saying it’s a terrible piece of work. Terribly inaccurate.”
“Ohhhhh. I get it.” Karen nodded, eyes wide, expression enlightened before it settled into a smile. “I think so too.”
“Right?!” Claudine thought her voice was a bit too enthusiastic there. Clearing her throat, she calmly reiterated. “Right? I actually had high expectations for this as many of the noble ladies I’ve come across recently have been flaunting their copies of the script. They even dubbed it as the ‘New Romance Bible of High Society’.” Claudine rolled her eyes. She would have made a gagging motion, but she was certain Mahiru would cry blood at that.
“Besides, I can’t believe they’d try to make a reference to my family name for such a piece, and even claim to have modeled the heroine after me when clearly, she is nothing like me.” Claudine continued to criticize. “Therefore, I have fair reason to dislike such a novel.”
“It’s not all that bad, is it?” Mahiru tried. “I managed to read up to half of it, and I believe it was alright.”
Claudine stared at her blankly. “I decided to give Junna the benefit of the doubt here, as she has been my long-time tutor and friend. I believe in her recommendations.” Claudine pinched the bridge of her nose in frustration. “So, I’ve read the book cover to cover.”
“Oh?”
“It was the worst decision I’ve ever made.” Claudine lamented. “Nana should have stopped her from picking up such a horrific title. I can’t believe she actually liked it enough to recommend it to me.”
“Maybe she thought it would be a nice read since it was about you?” Karen offered her opinion.
“Who would want to read about themselves in such a sad excuse of a tale?” Claudine played with her tea, swirling it in the cup. “Maybe if it was written more tastefully... Anyway, I can’t stand the book so maybe I’ll just give it away or use it for fire.”
“Madame Junna will feel sad to hear that, you know?” Mahiru sighed, taking a bite of her cake. “She might even cry.”
“No, she won’t.” Claudine chuckled with a wave of her hand, but then Junna’s face flashed a brief moment in her mind, and it made her pause in thought. “...right?” She wasn’t so sure all of a sudden.
“Lady Claudine... she sulked for three days when she’d heard you laughed during one of the most tragic plays of our generation.” Mahiru deadpanned.
Claudine’s brows furrowed, unable to recall the events that Mahiru was referencing.
“Que?”
“Remember? We went to Brighton theatre the other day?”
“...”
“Brighton?”
“Karen! You were with us too, you know!”
“Ah-”
Mahiru looked to Claudine excitedly. It seemed as though she’d finally remembered.
“That comedy skit Junna recommended?”
“Again, it was tragedy!”
“The one where the main character got shot after being stupid enough to not take a shield after he was advised to? The ‘A sword is mightier than a pen, but the sword is my...’ my...” Claudine thought hard, struggling to find the right words in her memory. “Something or other.” She gave up.
“Kuro-chan!”
Claudine grinned at the nickname, pleased that she was able to rile Mahiru up another day.
“Okay, okay. Enough teasing, I know.” She laughed, patting her friend on the head and gaining a blooming blush in return. “You were just too lovely, I couldn’t help myself.” She flashed a charming smile that made Mahiru burn even hotter, and made Karen pout.
“This is why you’re so... and nobles keep... hrmmrrgghh...” She grumbled. “And yet you complain about being crowded and you....”
“What was that, Dame Karen?” Claudine chuckled, eyeing her friend with an amused look.
“Oh, nothing really, Duchess Claudine.” Karen fired back.
“Hey now, don’t go spreading lies, my dear knight.” Claudine frowned.
“I speak no lies, milady. Everyone knows that you are the one who has been handling estate affairs as of late.” Karen spoke seriously all of a sudden, irking Claudine secretly.
She didn’t want to think of those things right now.
Before Claudine’s mood sunk further, Karen- with a quick flip of a switch- had returned to pouting. “And I’m not your dear knight.”
Oh, Karen could be so perceptive, sometimes. Claudine gladly accepted the bail.
“I know.” Claudine smiled, half-grateful, half-teasing. “You are Mahiru’s, right?” Claudine wiggled her brows suggestively. Karen flushed hot red, and Claudine thoroughly drank in her new target’s vexation in enjoyment.
“Kuro-chan!!”
Claudine admired the twin tomatoes in front of her. Life had been a drag lately, but time with her friends always seemed to offset all of those.
“Oh right. And Hikari’s too.”
Claudine broke into hysterics at the display of flailing arms and incoherent half-yells of denial at the mention of her knight’s name. She swore she could physically see the steam coming off of the pair in front of her. Was it from anger, embarrassment, or both? Probably both, Claudine supposed.
“Kuro-chan, you are seriously so mean.” Karen whined, fanning her face uselessly as the heat showed no signs of subsiding.
Claudine wiped a tear from her eyes. She’d laughed so much her sides were beginning to hurt.
“I’m terrible, aren’t I?” She smiled.
“That you are, Milady.” A stoic voice suddenly inserted itself into their conversation.
Claudine found herself jolting in her seat at its proximity from behind her. Whipping her head around, she sighed in relief at the sight of her escort.
“Hikari! At least alert us sooner if you’ve arrived!” Claudine complained. Her heart beat strongly against the palm she’d rested against her chest in an attempt to calm herself.
“I have arrived, Milady.”
“No, like I said. Say that sooner!” Claudine huffed, settling back into her seat, leaning her head on her palm once more. Claudine spared a glance at Karen and Mahiru who were looking rather bashful, eyes averted from the newest arrival.
She covered her mouth with her hand to hide the growing smile on her face as her knight stared at the pair across them. Claudine patiently awaited the usual awkward interaction between her friends that she knew would play out soon. She counted the seconds off in her head, knowing exactly when the first move would be made.

Like clockwork, Hikari faced Mahiru and Karen head-on, straightened her posture, and bent into a deep bow of greeting. “Lady Tsuyuzaki.”
“Dame Kagura. It’s a pleasure to see you once more” Mahiru responded calmly.
However, Claudine caught the way Mahiru’s brow twitched. Her displeasure was skillfully hidden behind that gentle smile she’s known for forever, but Claudine would like to believe she’s adept enough at deciphering the true meaning behind Mahiru’s masks called grace.
She internally shook her head, hoping Mahiru could soon find the freedom to be free from the expectations laid on the lady known as ‘High Society’s Saintess’, and be able to express emotions outside of simple joy, kindness, or sympathy.
Turning to the other knight, Claudine waited for what Karen’s reaction for today would be. She had a variety for different days. Sometimes it was openly voicing her disappointment, and other times it was a response just as curt and detached as Hikari’s.
“Dame Ai-”
“Karen!” The owner of the name interrupted. “Just Karen. Karen is fine... H-Hikari...”
Oh? Today was a little more bold, Claudine noted. Usually Karen would only politely request the other knight to refer to her by her given name, even if it bore her title. This was a fresh attempt. Now, how would her dear knight react?
“Dame Karen.” Hikari stated blankly, completely unfazed by the hiccup in her usual greeting routine.
Claudine lightly slapped Hikari’s arm-earning her a confused yelp- before throwing Karen and Mahiru a consoling smile; one that told them there was always a next time to attempt to woo her clueless knight.
She watched Karen’s shoulders drop in a sigh, and Mahiru cover her relenting smile with her fan. She should talk to Hikari about this sometime again. For now, however...
“So? What goes on back at the manor?” Claudine took a sip of her tea that had now gone cold after she’d ignored it a while. With a minute flick of her finger, it grew warm in her hands and she smiled, hoping her friends hadn’t noticed.
She heard her knight groan from behind her. Quite a rare happening, to be frank. Hikari was usually very careful with her actions and reactions, so Claudine braced herself for some unpleasant news.
“Master Cyrille has finally arrived.” She reported dutifully.
Claudine somehow heard the frosty bite in her tone. It was understandable. Cyrille was her elder brother of four years, and the heir apparent to their household.
-Or that was how it was supposed to be.
He and Hikari never really got along after- ehem- certain incidents had taken place a few years ago. Those incidents also happened to be part of the reason why his successorship was being reconsidered at present.
“How did Pa- Father react?” Claudine caught herself before her small childish habit would be revealed.
Hikari scratched her cheek, another nervous habit of hers that Claudine had learned about after years of being together. “They had the usual debate. Right as he arrived.”
That was expected. Claudine knew something like that would happen. So why was Hikari so bothered.
“The young master came onto the premises yelling right away from the gate about being the rightful heir or something along those lines.”
This too was within Claudine’s foresight.
“I can’t believe he’s making a fuss on foreign land. We’re not here to start a war, we’re here as representatives of a peace treaty.” Claudine shook her head in disappointment.
Her family, the Capulets, had hailed from the Western empire and had been residing for a few months on Eastern lands. After hundreds of years of warring with the east, they had experienced the first fifty years of a truce. Finally, the two empires had decided to build friendly relations to completely cease all the needless battles between them. After fifty years of an ambiguous standstill, the emperors had finally decided to send forth representatives to celebrate the golden year of peace between them and cement the alliance of the nations.
As the grand ducal household located at the border of the empires, their family had naturally been selected. This was also the West’s acclaimed ‘reward for service in battle’ to their family who had always fought to protect the precious border.
Yes, all that struggle in history, and her brother might just be the one to render it all useless in one fell swoop.
Not that it would have been the first time.
“Anything else, Hikari?” Claudine could feel her headache coming on.
“They argued in the study.”
“I figured.”
Hikari still radiated nervous energy, and Claudine just had to wonder why. “What are you not telling me yet, Hikari?”
“... Master Cyrille kept pressing that he was the rightful hair to the Dukedom... then Your Grace was angered and said that... that...”
“Hikari?”
“You’re not going to like it.” The knight warned.
“Obviously not.” Claudine replied flatly. “From how you are at this moment, I’ve already figured that out.”
“The Grand Duke said he’d rather make you the heir... instead of Young Master Cyrille... so he wishes to speak with you back at the estate.”
Claudine’s eyes widened. She knew there was a possibility that this outcome would arise. She just didn’t think it was that possible. She had already voiced her stance on this in the past to her father. She was not willing to take over their family as head. She had other plans in life. Plans of freedom and of adventure; she had other desires that were probably not suited for a woman carrying royal blood.
Yet she longed for that particular life. Thus, she could not be the Duke’s successor. She’d suggested that her father give the title to their youngest sibling instead who was seven years her junior.
He might not be ready now, but he could still be groomed to be the perfect candidate in the future. She was sure Gabriel could do it, irresponsible as she may sound at that moment, pushing it all onto the child.
“Kuro-chan?”
Mahiru’s tender voice reminded Claudine that her friends were still there, quite worried that she’d suddenly froze on the spot.
“My apologies, Mahiru.” She got up, bowing deeply. “I know you’ve gone out of your way to prepare all of this for me, but-”
“Hey.” Claudine felt a warm hand on her cheek, guiding her to stand back up. Mahiru’s gaze was kind as it always was, full of tender empathy. “Go. A few tea and biscuits aren’t going to go to waste just because you’re not around.”
Claudine managed a small smile, taking Mahiru’s hand into her own two.
“You have Karen anyway.”
“Exactly.”
“Hmm? What about me?”
The two young ladies laughed at their inside joke for a few moments before embracing one another goodbye.
Karen had offered one to Claudine as well, and she gladly accepted.
After being sent off with the best of regards and well-wishing, Claudine tried to not think on her dread the entire carriage ride home.
She just knew it was going to be a messy affair.
//-//-//-//-//
“Claudine.”
“Your Grace.”
The Grand Duke heaved a sigh, gesturing for his daughter to take a seat across from him. “I take it you’ve already heard from Hikari?” At the nod of Claudine’s head, he sighed once more. “I’m really sorry about that. I am aware that you do not wish to get involved in such dealings. However, I didn’t have much else to say. I could not think of any other argument at that moment.”
Claudine could see the exhaustion built up in her father. She felt bad for being so insistent on her own wants that she’d possibly pushed him up against a wall. However, she could not deny that this was the only path she was willing to take.
Taking her father’s hands and planting a kiss on them, she reassured him. “I understand, papa.”
“Claudine...”
“I am also at fault, anyway. I know you’re being pressured by the Royal family into a succession ceremony soon, and yet... I’m adding onto your troubles.”
“I just- I don’t understand why they are so adamant on it... yet at the same time I know why.” Duke Capulet’s expression turned stern. “I suspect this is the first prince’s doing.”
“Paris?”
The duke nodded, clearly unhappy at the mention of the name. “I don’t understand why your brother went against my guidance to not associate with him. The second prince would make a far better friend, as well as future ruler.” His frown deepened. “And yet, that imbecile, Cyrille...”
Duke Capulet brought Claudine’s hands to his forehead, bowing before his daughter.
“After all that fool, Paris, had done to you...”
Claudine shuddered at the memory of her days at the academy and the forceful ‘courtship methods’ of the first prince. Had her father been a different man, she feared she would have been long-engaged to such a twisted brat who hid behind a cunning smile and the power of the crown.
He was sure never to push too far, or too dangerously, but Claudine knew he was bordering terrible, terrible deeds. She was just glad she was far away from him now.
“Claudine.”
Her father lifted his head up, eyes saddened, but commanding in a sense as they stared into Claudine’s own. Claudine immediately knew that his next words would be incredibly important, that they would be of the utmost value to her and her life, as well as their entire household’s. She just knew that their weight would be something she would have to endeavor to bear for everyone’s sake.
She knew because he rarely ever asked her of anything that she did not desire. She knew that something must have happened to allow the Grand Duke to tremble in this way, before his nineteen-year-old daughter, with a gaze that was begging her to comply.
“You have to get married.”
//-//-//-//-//
Claudine swung her sword, ridding the area of the final beast and collecting its glowing core off the puddled ground. Handing the gem-like item to Hikari for safe-keeping, she slumped against a tree, sinking to the ground that dirtied her pants with mud that had formed from the night’s rain.
“Are you hurt, milady?” Hikari inquired, already rushing forward to do a thorough body-check for any injuries on Claudine.
“Nothing of the sort. Also, I told you not to address me that way while we’re out adventuring. What if someone found us out?” Claudine ran a hand through her damp bangs, grimacing at the repulsive feel and smell of blood and grime in her hair.
“My apologies.”
Times like these, Claudine wished she hadn’t focused too much on learning combat spells back then. She should have taken the foundational classes with Nana more seriously, and looked into metamorphosis magic sooner. She wouldn’t have to worry about issues such as being discovered then.
Better to start late then never, she supposed. She could only manage to change her hair and eye color, as well as clothes for a small amount of time for now, but she was working on changing her entire appearance for extended periods soon. Then she and Hikari could go off on any journey or mission without being recognized.
“Claudine?”
The soft calling made her smile. It was rare for her knight to address her so casually, and even rarer was the tenderness she allowed to escape in her voice. Claudine placed a hand on Hikari’s head, petting it lightly.
“Yes, Hikari?”
“Do you not want to get married, Claudine?”
The question wasn’t what she had expected. She hadn’t even told Hikari about her current situation yet. She must have listened in on the conversation secretly.
“If my dad had caught you...” Claudine laughed at the realization, shaking her head.
Hikari remained silent.
Claudine scratched her cheek, looking away from the knight’s expectant gaze. “It’s not as though I don’t want to.” She admitted. “I just...”
“Just?”
“I haven’t found a person I’d like to share that kind of joy with yet.” Claudine spoke with a loneliness to her tone that they both weren’t quite familiar with. “I haven’t gotten to know anyone who makes me want to experience that kind of relationship.”
Hikari didn’t seem to understand fully, but she nodded nonetheless. “Okay.” She decided not to push further, noticing her master’s discomfort. Instead, she held out a hand to aid her up on her feet.
“Thank you, Hikari.” For the assistance and for listening, Claudine said in her heart. “Shall we head back to the guild now? Wouldn’t want Cyrille to barge into my room first thing tomorrow morning and find it empty.” Claudine half-joked.
If Claudine knew her brother, which she did, she knew he’d have searched for her at the dinner table tonight already, but her father had likely made an excuse to keep him out of her hair ‘til morning. She already knew that he would want to speak to her on matters regarding the prince, or succession, or whatever it was he did that was likely no good.
If he ever got into Claudine’s room without supervision, she was afraid he’d stumble upon things he wasn’t supposed to, and would likely use it against her.
Her conversation with her father resurfaced in her mind. His words on finding a suitable partner, a suitor, and the reasons behind it were invasive, consuming her every thought.
Cyrille was trying to set her up with Prince Paris for some reason. He was willing to pull all stops to do so. It seemed that he had went ahead and made a proposal to the royal family under the authority of ‘Heir-apparent’ to the Capulet Dukedom. He’d sworn that once he was made Duke, she’d be married off into the imperial household as a way to strengthen the standing and influence of the emperor.
Whatever he had been promised to make him act so selfishly and vilely, Claudine didn’t even want to know.
As of now, he held no real power over her father. Neither did the first prince, in reality. Deep down, however, both Claudine and the Grand Duke knew there was more to this arrangement than two boys and their greedy egos being fed. He feared for the future.
With all they had already gotten away with in the past, Duke Capulet was suspecting that someone else held the strings to the puppets dancing to a tune. They had yet to know what gears were turning in a suspected grand scheme, but it must not come to pass. This was what their family feared the most, and why Claudine must not get involved with Paris.
In order to have a valid reason to reject such a candidate, she needed a better one. That was the part she had to play.
There was just one small problem-
“You there!”
A voice echoed through the shadow and mist of the forest, horse hooves stomping rapidly against the wet ground. Quickly, Claudine brandished her sword, pointing it in the direction from whence it came. “Hikari! Get behind me!” She commanded, left hand twitching in anticipation.
“Now see here, Milady. I’m the protector suppo-”
“Don’t move! Stay where you are and drop your weapons.” The voice commanded, a silhouette beginning to form in the distance.
“Like hell we’ll listen.” Claudine grumbled, sword still at the ready with a glow that traveled from its hilt to its blade.
“I’m warning you!” The voice echoed once more. “State your name and your business here. And don’t even think of trying to fight or escape.”
Claudine fixed her glare on the figure coming into the light of the clearing they were at, magic barely finishing its work of turning her hair black as Hikari’s shifted into a shorter cut. It was the best she could do at such short notice. Hopefully the night would be kind enough to be their mask and they wouldn’t be recognized afterwards should they escape successfully.
“Again, I order you to state your names and your business here, strangers. Are you not aware that these grounds belong to the imperial family?” The powerful stomping halted right in front of the women, a sharp huff from the steed sending them reeling back in disgust.
Finally, underneath the gaze of the moon, a figure cast in stardust light appeared before them, hooded cloak hiding the identity of the horseman.
“Who are you.”
Claudine continued to glower at the newcomer, unrelenting as she kept her lips tightly shut. Who was this person? Why had they suddenly been approached? This place was supposedly a mission ground for adventurers and hunters hoping to earn their keep by clearing out the ghouls and demons that infested this uninhabited land.
“Who. Are. You-”
“I could ask you the same thing.” Claudine spoke levelly through grit teeth, ready to slash at any given time should the newcomer move in a threatening pattern. “We’re only here on quest. Adventurers if you will.”
The cloaked man dismounted and walked up to Claudine, staring a few inches down at her. “Is that so?”
Claudine hated that he was even trying to intimidate her. Placing a firm hand on his chest, she pushed him away somewhat gently, not really wanting to potentially aggravate the already-tense situation. “Yes. That is so.” She confirmed, scowling. “For us at least. But what about you?”
Claudine eyed the man, watching for any suspicious movements. He returned the gaze, looking her up and down, searching her expression for signs of dishonesty. He seemed to have found nothing as his aura of hostility calmed drastically, and he sighed.
“I’m an imperial guard, patrolling.” As he said that, a sword was raised, still sheathed. Claudine was shown the imperial seal on the scabbard and she relaxed somewhat as the guard backed off with a small bow. “As I’ve mentioned before, these grounds are under the jurisdiction of the imperial household.”
“Apologies, sir. However, we were unaware of this fact as this place has been a known hotspot for adventurers for many years- or so we’ve heard.” Claudine explained, now sheathing her own sword.
“I understand.” The guard nodded. “I also apologize. While your statement held truth in the past, as of recent, this forest has been deemed more unsafe than it used to be. It’s not just magical beasts or ghouls that lurk these shadows now. Reports of spies, terrorists, and bandits trying to enter the capital via a newly discovered route through the woods have been reported, so we are at high alert.”
Claudine hummed, taking in their current situation. “I see.” Claudine nodded, agreeing to his words. She had expected these kinds of threats to arise as the peace treaty ceremony approached and more nobles from both empires flocked to the main city. It was an opportune moment to spark disaster, and even a civil war.
Good on the west to take quick measures.
“As such, I must ask for your identities to ensure the safety of all.”
Not so good for Claudine.
“I, er-”
“As you are adventurers- and I, of course, believe in your words, I would just like to see your identifications and know your names. It’s a quick process then I can let you go. That is... if you have nothing to be suspected of.”
Truthfully, she shouldn’t be as nervous as she suddenly was at the moment. However, there were a few issues with that request. For one, no one but Hikari, the Grand Duke, and the Head Guild Master of the Eastern Empire knew of her being an adventurer. She had been registered under special circumstances that had been agreed upon, and her issued permit in order to accept quests in the west was also an unorthodox arrangement, and very much a secret one.
When she’d first arrived at the guild hall, she was given an identification badge that also served as her permit like the rest of the adventurers. However, this did not contain her name at all. Instead, it only contained her registration code and where she had come from.
As a law-abiding citizen for the most part, she hadn’t ever needed to do much besides flashing the shiny trinket from a distance at other guards in passing.
This time, however, was different. She was certain that it would be scrutinized and most definitely questioned.
“You sure are taking an awful lot of time to simply identify yourself.” The stranger’s tone of voice was still calm, but his aura had shifted noticeably. “Is anything the matter?”
“No, not at all.” Claudine responded, proud that she’d managed to keep her voice steady. Reaching into her polo, she pulled out the chain that held her badge, presenting it to the imperial guard, praying that he wouldn’t check it as thoroughly as she’d feared.
“Um, excuse me. Why isn’t your name imprinted on it?”
‘Damn it.’
“Allow me to come clean.” Claudine spoke, instantly regretting her choice of words. It made her sound like she actually was someone to be wary of. She should conjure some believable alibi at least.
“Milady-” Hikari stepped forward, but was blocked with that same imperial-branded sword from earlier.
“It’s alright.” Claudine reassured before her knight could retaliate. One wrong move and they could actually be in jeopardy. Not only them, but the entire event of a peace treaty could lay to waste if they were not careful and would get found out.
“Go on.” Was the command.
“I’m actually...” Claudine licked her suddenly dry lips, thinking of how to say it. “I’m a daughter of a noble, and I’m operating under...  rather private conditions.”
Okay, she hadn’t meant to be that truthful. If at all.
“How can I believe such a tall claim?” The cloaked man stepped closer to Claudine, now incredibly suspicious. “To which family do you belong?
Claudine had no time to secure a valid name, speaking the first that came to mind. “Sa-Saijou.” Another truth that would surely deepen her dug grave.
“Saijou? As in the Marquess Saijou?” She could almost shrink under that examining gaze. “I’ve never heard of or seen you before though.”
“I- I’m not his child, no. I’m a niece and I’ve been staying with relatives in the west. It was an arrangement made when I was very young, and I have only since been allowed to return here.”
‘Damn me and my inability to lie.’
“I’m sorry, as much as I’d like to believe you, I’ll have to take you with me for some questioning.”
No, no, no. This was not good. Claudine couldn’t risk more people prying into her identity. Also, she could feel the strain of her magic that was about to undo itself. She couldn’t keep up appearances- quite literally- for much longer.
“If you would come quietly.”
They had to bail.
“I’m sorry, but we-”
Suddenly, an arrow flew right by her head, barely grazing her cheek as sounds of multiple hooves and wolf-like growls filled the forest.
“Tsk.”
“Milady!”
“Stand back, you two.” The guard moved in front of them, sword drawn and aimed towards the origin of the arrow and sounds. Quickly, those same sounds began to shift and spread, as if circling them.
Claudine and Hikari quickly drew out their own swords, as the former launched a quick area check spell discreetly.
‘Twenty? No, thirty. Thirty men on horseback... at least ten hunting wolves.’
As Claudine weighed their situation, a harsh gust of wind came hurtling towards them, the hood on the imperial guards cloak coming off, revealing long brunette locks tied up in a ponytail.
The sight of such smooth strands on which the moon’s beams bounced off so gently almost made Claudine forget the gravity of their situation, eyes bewitched- captured- by stunning violet gems that she couldn’t believe she’d failed to take notice of before.
“It seems they have a mage in their midst.” The knight, now fully facing Claudine, addressed them. “I’m sorry to ask this of you after having suspected you; and while I still doubt your credibility, I would like to shamelessly enlist your assistance as of the moment.”
There was something in his gaze, in his entire beautiful expression, that compelled Claudine to know more, to say yes, to help him.
“Truly, you are quite shameless.” She grinned, head held high. “I would have done so without you asking.”
The smile she was rewarded with sent her heart into a frenzy. It wasn’t a handsome grin, no. Claudine took note that under the moonlit night, this man oozed a dignified beauty that was quickly distracting her from her mission at hand.
“You have my gratitude.”
Claudine nodded, willing herself to not stare for longer than necessary as she and Hikari took stance.
With their backs to each other, they stood in wait, counting down the seconds to their adversaries’ arrival. Claudine sighed ruefully as she felt her transformation spell fade, this instance confirmed as she glanced over at a now long-haired Hikari. She could just feel questioning eyes burning their gaze into her golden hair.
She was not looking forward to having to explain this too.
“What.” She spat, meeting the stare of her temporary ally, hoping no questions would come right now.
“Oh nothing. Just wanted to tell you something.”
“And that is?”
As she said that, gruff looking men arrived in the clearing, their disgusting smirks clearly indicated that they were looking down on the small group they’d surrounded.
Claudine was beginning to feel irritated. She hated being underestimated.
She barely caught the grin thrown her way as the guard launched himself at the group. She did, however, receive every single insulting word of challenge.
“Don’t hold me back now, Little Miss.”
Oh it was on,
“Insufferable asshole.”
//-//-//-//-//
Claudine did not frequent pubs. They weren’t her type of hangout spots. And while she wasn’t one for leisure cafe dates or tea parties with the other noble ladies, she did love the peace of libraries and the refreshing mountain creeks.
Needless to say, this place intimidated her more than any imperial guard could hope to.
“Not a good drinker?”
It wasn’t that. It really wasn’t.
If anything, both Claudine and Hikari were strong drinkers. Just not... public drinkers, she supposed.
“No.” Claudine sighed, taking a seat across the pretty man- damn, he was beautiful. Claudine would have almost mistaken him for a woman. He was tall, but not much taller than Claudine, and his voice wasn’t all too deep, so maybe she wasn’t wrong. Maybe.
“Then what has you so down, milady?” His tone of voice was playful, and Claudine knew she was being teased. He probably still didn’t believe in her whole ‘secret-noble-adventurer’ story.
“I’m just tired.”
“Hoh? Already? From that little excursion?”
Claudine growled, pounding the table with her fist. “Well, if someone would have just stayed out of my way while we were fighting earlier then-”
“Now, now. Don’t go blaming someone else for these kind of things, Young Miss. How are you ever going to survive as an adventurer if you blame others for your mistakes? Being able to take responsibility for one’s self is one of the most important traits in the field.”
Claudine clicked her tongue. She knew she was purposely being toyed with. “Shut up.”
“I’m afraid I can’t do that, Miss.”
“And why the hell not?” Claudine’s glare went ignored as the man waved over a server to place an order.
Turning to her with that same smug smile that was equal parts gorgeous and incredibly annoying, the guard spoke. “Because I want to get to know you better.”
Claudine scoffed, rolling her eyes.
“Starting with your names.” He clasped his hands together, resting his chin atop them. “I at least believe you are of some noble descent. If the silence of your companion, and her respect towards any of your earlier actions and decisions hold any significant hint to that.”
“Glad you’re at least that sharp.” Claudine huffed, putting up a mask to hide her inner thoughts that were struggling to come up with some alias for both her and Hikari.
“So. Names.”
Anything. Anything.
“J-Julie!”
Curse that damn book and the sudden memory of it!
Claudine inwardly cried as she gave away that piece of false information, even screwing up the actual name she was supposed to use.
“Julie... Saijou.” The brunette looked at her skeptically, but nodded. Somehow accepting it for now. “And your companion is?”
“She’s-”
“Kagura Hikari.”
“Hikari?!” Claudine whipped her head about in shock. So much for discretion! Just what was this girl thinking?!
“I’m sorry, Milady. But I think it is in our best interests to be as honest as possible.” Hikari bowed apologetically to Claudine before turning to her fellow knight, face blank and giving nothing away. “I am uncertain if you’ve heard of such details, but the Saijou’s have long since had ties with the Capulet family of the Western empire.”
Claudine covered her face with her hands, now groaning into her palms. She could only hope this wouldn’t ruin her already fragile freedom and put their positions at risk.
“They are the relatives milady has mentioned before. Her aunt married into the family, you see.”
Ah, so that was how Hikari was going to play it.
Well, maybe it wasn’t a bad excuse. Claudine believed the knight was considering any future encounters with the imperial guard since they would be attending palace events soon.
She spared the guard a glance, and was surprised to see that he actually looked to be convinced of those words. Not that they were much of a lie in the first place.
“I see! I understand. My apologies then.”
Claudine held back her sigh of relief, not wanting to give even the slightest thing away anymore.
“Yes, that’s it.” She said, trying to add onto their story. “And about the identification badge... well... you wouldn’t really expect any noble children, much less ladies, join an adventurer guild and all that.”
“I suppose so.” The guard chuckled.
Soon, their drinks had arrived, and Claudine found herself staring into the golden liquid the man across from her was downing to keep her eyes of his too pretty face, a question nagging on her mind.
“And you?”
“Hmm?” Placing his glass down, he gave her a curious, yet smug smile. “What about me?”
Somehow, Claudine wanted to wipe it off his stupid face.
“We gave you our names and background. It’s only common courtesy to introduce yourself properly in return, is it not?”
His growing grin was really pissing her off.
“Right, of course. Excuse me for my rudeness since earlier.”
“No kidding.” Claudine complained, waiting rather impatiently for his information. Not that she’d ever remember it, much less use the knowledge for any future plans. No. Not at all.
Not even for that.
“Hmm, well you could call me Romero.”
Romero.
Really, now. Romero?
Again, that damn book was really trying to force its way into Claudine’s thoughts. She internally cringed at the association.
“Romero. Of course that’s your name.” She rolled her eyes, not believing it for even one second. “You certainly look like a ‘Romero’.” She stated sarcastically. ‘Romero’ here looked as eastern as eastern gets.
“You wound me, Lady Julie. Can’t a man adapt a name of different culture simply because it suits him this much?”
“I didn’t say anything against it.” Claudine waved, taking a sip from her drink. It was cold, a little bitter. She liked it.
“Your expression says all there needs to be said.”
Claudine smirked, leaning across the table. “Oh? I’m glad it does then. Sir Romero.”
The man’s eyes glinted in amusement as he leaned forward as well. Claudine huffed. So this is how they were going to play it.
“So, Lady Julie. I said I’d like to get to know you.”
Claudine nodded. “Know all you want, then.”
“You say that so easily, but are you sure?” Really, this man unnerved her like no one else. His gaze was piercing, yet dull. It was clear, but betrayed no thoughts nor intentions of his.
Claudine nodded again, but a little less confident now.
“Then, if I may be so bold as to ask,” Romero began. “What business do you have here in the capital? Besides the whole peace treaty, I suppose. If I recall correctly, it is not a requirement for all nobles to attend, and I know the property of both the Saijou’s and Capulet’s are a ways away from here.”
Claudine swallowed a lump in her throat, wondering what she should say. “Isn’t it the greatest honor for any noble to be able to claim that they stood as personal witness to the changing of times?”
What a generic answer.
Bless Junna’s etiquette lessons that were coming to fruition.
“Ehh, how boring~”
Somewhat.
“Be that as it may, it’s the truth.” Claudine raised her glass back up to her lips, taking in more of that golden liquid.
“Is that so? Just that? Nothing else?” Romero pressed.
“That’s all I’m willing to divulge, Sir Romero.” Claudine said sternly, eyes ordering him to back down. Even for an imperial knight, wasn’t this a little too impudent?
“Fair, fair.” Romero responded, hands up in the air in surrender. “I must have overstepped my boundaries. My apologies.”
Claudine downed her drink, ignoring him for a moment.
“I’m simply curious. And to think, for the sole purpose of this event, you went out of your way to get an adventuring permit for quests from the main guild when you might only be staying a short while.” Romero continued to seek her gaze, peskily grinning in wait. “As an imperial guard, I’m just concerned, milady. It’s part of the job.”
Claudine gave him a blank look. Romero seemed unfazed.
“I just need a few more details for my report, that’s all. Something to make your story believable enough to not be sought out by other guards who aren’t as kind and considerate as me.” He winked to accentuate his statement, and Claudine threw him a disgusted look.
“If you were the least bit as considerate as you claim to be, you’d have been quiet for the last hour.”
“Harsh words, Milady. I only want to kno-”
“Milady is here to get married.” Hikari slammed her mug on the table, pinning her gaze on the troublesome man. “Now that you know, stop bothering my master.”
“Hikari!” Claudine didn’t know whether she should be touched at the intervention, or frustrated at the reveal.
“What a loyal guardian.” Romero complimented with a grin. “You’re the kind of escort the imperial palace would love to have.”
It was almost as if he were holding out bait for Hikari to take. Claudine didn’t like it.
“Excuse me, but Hikari is-”
“I belong solely to my Master. I serve no one else but her.  My loyalty has been sworn. Your words are kind, but they are not right. Not for me. I’m sorry.”
“Hikari...”
Romero and Hikari’s gazes remained locked in a contest, waiting for one or the other to crack first. Claudine watched on with concern. She hoped they wouldn’t get into any serious quarrel.
To her fortune, Romero finally broke. Broke into a fit of laughter, tears of amusement spilling that he quickly wiped away.
Claudine allowed herself to sigh in relief as she finally relaxed in her seat for the first time that night.
Romero finally calmed enough to begin talking again, much to Claudine’s chagrin. “Married. I see. Married, huh?”
Claudine narrowed her eyes at the amused man, scowl deep. “And what of it? Do you think I’m too unfit for such a maiden’s dream?” If he said yes, Claudine might just be tempted to chop a ball off or too. Tempting beauty of this man be damned. He should try to see if he could snag any lady after tonight.
“No, no. Nothing of that sword, Milady.” He smiled, settling down and emptying the remaining contents of his cup. “Just... Who is the lucky fellow to have caught such a strong-hearted beauty such as yourself?”
Claudine actually blushed at his words this time. Though she did curse her heart for being swayed so easily like that, and by this insufferable man, no less.
“There is... no man... or anyone at all.” She managed to say through grit teeth, slightly embarrassed at that truth that she had about zero suitors coming for her.
She was surprised to see that Romero looked genuinely surprised. It wasn’t some faux, mocking expression. He seemed sincerely shocked at the reveal that Claudine was as single as the lonesome sun in the daytime.
“No one?”
“Not one.”
“For someone as charming as you?” He blinked those big, violet eyes, honest and innocent-looking for once.
“Flattery will get you nowhere, good sir.” Claudine chuckled, actually finding Romero more endearing than annoying at that moment. A shocker for herself.
“I just can’t believe that no one would approach you or ask you. You.” He gestured towards her. “You’re appearance is definitely a win, but more-so is your personality.” He openly praised Claudine. “You are a lovely being. I’m not saying this shallowly. I truly mean every word, Milady.”
Claudine felt her heart warm a little at that.
True, she’s heard those words before from close friends and family. Said in a particular way that she just knew was honest. However, they knew her. They knew Claudine and how she really was. As for the other noble men and women she’d met, they had always seemed to presume things about her based on rumor and first impressions, never attempting to truly know Claudine enough to say compliments that Claudine could think to consider as truthful.
Empty laud, frivolous words, backstabbing comments.
A beautiful face, they said. A cunning mind. A brash personality, an unladylike disposition.
Claudine never claimed they were false, but they weren’t exactly accurate.
Just like that dumb book.
Why did Claudine feel so moved all of a sudden. It wasn’t as though Romero had said much more than others, now that she thought about it. She’d probably have already heard those utterances before. So why?
Was it his tone? The way he looked straight into her eyes with an unguarded sincerity?
Before Claudine could find the answers to her internal queries, the door to the pub burst open, a group of men tossing over tables, and harassing the nearest bar patrons, in search of something or someone.
Romero got up from the table, as did Hikari and Claudine, hands already on their swords, ready to swing.
Claudine’s eyes met with one of the men in front, and something seemed to click in the air.
A finger was raised and pointed right at her.
“Them.”
And they charged.
“Hikari!”
“Yes, Milady.”
The knight moved swiftly, positioning herself in front of Claudine to ward off those who targeted her master, buying Claudine time as she tried to infuse as much magic as she could into her sword and limbs. She didn’t have enough mana for an entire body enhancement as she’d used a fair amount up during the earlier hunts, disguise, and fights. She knew she had barely enough to spare. Just enough to hopefully end this.
She prayed it was enough.
Romero seemed busy as well, sword clashing against spear and blades, shields and armor.
He should be fine. Claudine couldn’t spare him much worry if she had to worry about herself first.
Other patrons had also joined in the fray, but it was clear that there was a difference in the power the intruders held.
With her amplifications complete, Claudine readied herself, and in one motion, swooped past a flurry of enemies, knocking them to the ground before a new wave could approach her.
Were these also among those that Romero had mentioned? Terrorists who had actually managed to enter the city? This wasn’t good. They needed to subdue them before more damage could be done.
Where were the other imperial guards anyway? Why was Romero even patrolling alone with such a dangerous agenda at hand?
She didn’t have time to entertain any of those questions, she decided. Claudine knew she had to focus on what was happening right now. Those could be saved for later.
Focus.
Focus.
Foc-
“Julie.” Romero called.
Claudine almost forgot that that was her name at the moment, barely managing to send him a confirming nod. “I’m a little busy, but what is it?” She responded, knocking someone over on the head.
“I just thought of something.”
Was it a plan on how to defeat all these men for efficiently? An easier way to protect all the innocent people from these terrorists? If so, Claudine was all ears. “Speak.”
“What about me? What about us?”
‘Huh?’
Claudine managed to throw him an incredulous look as Hikari kicked an attacker away just in time before he could touch Claudine.
“What about you- or us?” She asked, restraining another man with a single binding spell before taking away his consciousness.
“What if you...” Romero dodged a slash, countering with his own. Another masked man made a grab for him, but he easily turned the situation around, ending up on top of him, standing atop a few other bodies.
“I?”
“What if you married me?”
Claudine managed to smash a man’s skull against the wall just as she stared dumbfounded at the imperial knight who looked amazingly serious, and undeterred by all that was occurring around him.
Really?
“...Are we really having this conversation here? Right now?” Claudine questioned, movements fluid as she added to the pile of bodies behind her that were slowly being tied up and secured by a few free bar patrons.
“Yes? Why?” Romero replied nonchalantly, repelling a blow with his sword.
Claudine could not believe the audacity of this man. “Couldn’t it, oh I don’t know, wait until things have settled down?!”
“Couldn’t what wait?” Romero said clueless, stepping back from the force of one particular strike, approaching Claudine’s space.
“This talk!” She answered back, vexed.
“I’ll have you know I’m a hundred percent serious on this proposal. Despite its untimeliness.”
“And I can’t be serious thinking about it because there are so many things I have to consider. One of those being why I must reject your ‘serious proposal’.” Claudine growled as someone managed to hit her leg hard enough to cause her to go off balance.
Romero had caught her just in time, righting her and going back to his own fight. Claudine felt a little annoyed that he had so easily switched gears and was able to handle both his enemy and ally.
“Why ever not? It’s not like anyone else has made an offer?” Romero sounded disappointed.
Claudine really couldn’t explain it right now. Not in this situation, and certainly not as other people listened in.
“Because.”
“Because?”
“Just because!” Claudine yelled, sending one man up into the ceiling in uncontrolled temper.
“I need a concrete reason, milady. Else I’m unwilling to step down from this.” Romero laughed, continuing on with his battle as he and Claudine fought back-to-back.
“And I’m telling you we can talk about it later.”
“Just trying to tell you that I’m a very good candidate, Lady Julie.”
“No thank you, Sir Romero.” Claudine rolled her eyes, tossing another enemy away to the side.
“And that is because?”
Claudine noticed a quick shift out of the corner of her eye. The refraction of light off a blade gave her all the information she needed to calculate a countermeasure. With her feet firmly planted, she twisted her torso, channeling enough energy to deliver a speedy lethal blow into the attacker’s ribcage-
...and apparently also Romero’s who had decided to jump in front of her in a chivalrous attempt at saving her.
A wrong decision, clearly.
Both he and their foe dropped to the ground, on the obvious brink of consciousness.
Claudine’s mind flew into panicked disarray as she quickly knelt over her comrade, trying to think of how to help him.
“Romero! I’m sorry!!! But you’re an idiot!” She began to spout words out so quickly. “You should know that I’m a trained fighter. And why did you do that! You clearly saw what I was doing! This is why you shouldn’t interfere with my battles! Also what was with that sudden proposal in the middle of it all huh?! Are you trying to get us killed?!”
“Milady-” Hikari was at her side, trying to calm her as the fighting had finally subsided. Claudine’s vision however, was unexpectedly tunneled, worry apparent on her face as she desperately tried to aid the fallen knight.
“There’s a time and place for everything, Romero!” Claudine continued to scold, hands already taking on a healing glow. “You ought to be more mindful. And you claim you’re an imperial knight?!”
“Master Clau-”
“I fear for the empire if all the knights are like you. What, did you think you were saving me by placing yourself in front of me?”
“Stupid Romero. Now you’ve gotten hurt. You weren’t focusing at all, were you? And all for a silly proposal?!”
“Milady, I think he’s losing consciousness-”
“And you wouldn’t even let me explain why I clearly have to reject your proposal! I have very specific conditions, mind you. So don’t go mocking me once you hear them.
“Milady!”
“You see, I can’t accept your proposal because...” Claudine finally took a deep breath, a pause for once.
Hikari tried to tell her that Romero had long since been knocked out, but Claudine couldn’t seem to hear her. At this point, she’d realized it would be better to give up and allow Claudine to settle down on her own.
Hikari only hoped her Master wouldn’t break down at the realization and the embarrassing memories to come.
“-I like women.”
“...”
“...”
Hikari sighed, finally seeing the truth sink in for Claudine as her eyes widened and her hands trembled in an emotion that was no longer just concern.
“... he heard nothing, did he?”
She was in for a long day tomorrow.
“Milady...”
A/N: Uh. I think I did my best atm. Yey. If you’re wondering why Claudine has eastern friends, and supposedly they go way back, as well as why her knight is also from the east, well... see you next ep! Or I think next next chap? Ma- er, Romero needs a turn.
Also, before ppl complain to me about genderbending or making this mlw, I’m not one to mis-tag something. Just saying.
I apologize for OOC-ness
Also I’m just... really tired. I wanted to amuse myself by writing something silly or like... unusual-ish. Idk.
Meh.

hey what’s monogatari about? you reblog a lot of stuff for it and it looks like a lot of fun so i wanted to know if i should get into it
hmmm honestly i don’t know how to answer this for a lot of reasons, but ig primarily because monogatari is very problematic in almost all ways imaginable. it’s seriously got some major flaws, big enough that i think most people would have trouble looking past. it’s basically every horrible stereotype about anime. it’s a show that comments on sex and sexuality, but is also completely draped in it, often to an uncomfortable extent. there are children in the show who all have a metaphorical asterisk next to them so that we can see their bodies on screen, or have them joked about. not to mention the little sister trope in some sections of the story (especially nisemonogatari). the books are arguably better at this but honestly, it’s such a large presence in the show that it’s basically impossible to give a blanket recommendation of this series and i beg anyone reading this to proceed with caution. there’s a great video by under the scope [here] that i feel touches on a lot of my personal issues with it. if you’ve seen that video and you’re still interested, there’s a watch guide under the cut, and skip guides for incest and loli stuff at the bottom
now with that out of the way, monogatari is largely about one massive lesbian polycule it’s about the main character, araragi, and the supernatural manifestations in his town. in the world of monogatari, things called “aberrations” exist which give physicality to the emotions of humans, and these aberrations often manifest in harmful ways, like a monkey’s paw. someone who araragi knows or meets is burdened by an aberration, and he has to help them solve it. that’s the general conceit of the “first season”, whereas the later seasons tend to branch off and have far more varied plot lines like the cool time travel stuff in second season. also i recommend watching in this order:
bakemonogatari (15 eps)
kizumonogatari (this one is a set of three movies)
nisemonogatari (11 eps)
nekomonogatari kuro (4 eps)
------------------------------
monogatari series second season (23 eps + 3 recaps)
hanamonogatari (4 eps)
------------------------------
tsukimonogatari (4 eps)
owarimonogatari s1 (12 eps)
koyomimonogatari (12 half length eps)
owarimonogatari s2 (7 eps)
zoku owarimonogatari (movie)
yes it’s long, but honestly if you’ve seen bakemonogatari, then you’ve got a pretty good idea of whether or not you’ll wanna continue. there’s books that exist beyond the first three seasons, but it seems like for now they’re taking a break, since we haven’t gotten a new show since zoku owari in late 2018. you’re gonna wanna pirate the show since a lot of it isn’t available legally. also i haven’t seen all of the series, only most of it. oh and there’s no english dub so you’re going to have to read the subs. there’s an absolute shit ton of dialogue so here’s my tip for going into it: the faster people talk, the less important the topic is to the overall story. there’s lots of tangents and red herrings, so don’t take everything seriously. the characters tend to joke with each other a lot, so try to see not just what they say, but what they’re not saying as well.
also some extra notes on watch order since this series is super complicated
-kizumono is really weird. its technically first in the timeline and the book for it was published right after bakemono. the anime however delayed it until basically the end and its treated like this huge mystery the entire time. i get why they did this [kizu is really interesting and they clearly spent a lot of time on it] but tbh its a really good hook for the series since its GORGEOUS, and the books put it early so i will too. i find it important context for koyomi’s character and tbh the transgenderism of this arc is off the charts
-nekomonogatari black seems like recap but iirc theres some cool shit later on so dont skip it
-you can watch hanamono after mayoi jiangshi [the time travel arc], since thats when the book was released but tbh it cheapens the end of second season somewhat so i dont recommend it [however hanamono is my favorite arc and it is REALLY good imo]
-a lot of people say you can skip koyomimono but the wiki says its important to owari s2 and i havent gotten that far :<
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
if you wanna skip the weird stuff with underage girls
skip bakemono 3 and 5. 4 is important and cannot be skipped. i would say skip nadeko snake [9 and 10] but nadeko is really important later. feel free to skip the climax of this arc since its the grossest but you should at least be familiar with her.
theres also some shit in nisemono you should skip since nisemono is... the worst individual entry wrt uncomfortable sex stuff that has no plot bearing. if youre also skipping the incest stuff itll be detailed down below [skip 1, 2, 8, 9, and 11]. skip nisemono episode 4 once you get to the bath scene and skip the beginning of ep 6 until mayoi leaves. theres some gross stuff in ep 7 but iirc its really short and 7 cannot be skipped
skip second season eps 17-20. its arguable whether shinobu time was important bc it introduces a new character but this arc is by far the most egregious wrt shinobu/mayoi/ononoki and overall kinda sucked ngl. also mayoi ‘‘dies’‘ so at least you dont have to see her anymore.
if you wanna skip the little sister stuff
skip nisemono 1, 2, 8, 9, and 11. skip the rest of episode 5 when koyomi starts cleaning karen. skip the beginning of ep 10 until they get to the donut shop.

Hi! As a disclaimer, I haven’t read this manga myself (I learned of its existence through a mutual), but have you heard of Kaori Yuki’s The Cain Saga and the sequel series, Godchild? There are some striking parallels between this series, which began publication in the 90s, and Kuro. The protagonist is an ear who solves mysteries with the aid of his faithful butler, and one of the antagonists is a handsome, silver-haired doctor who reanimates corpses as “deadly dolls.”
Tumblr media
Dear Mrs. Sutcliff,
I have heard of this series, but not had the pleasure yet to be exposed to it. (Had the pleasure...? Displeasure? I don’t know, I only heard it’s good. I might give it a shot!)
To the best of my knowledge Yana has never made any references to this franchise or author, and any advanced search attempts on Twitter also yielded zero results.
Tumblr media
I thought that perhaps she might have said something on her old blog, but as there’s only an archive left without a working search function, I can’t trust my zero search results there to be conclusive evidence either. I have appealed to higher authority (a.k.a. Ducky’s blog) though, but her answer was also that to the best of her knowledge, Yana has never mentioned Yuki to be a source of inspiration.
Arguments for Kuro’s originality
I’ve poked around on Japanese blogs that compare Kuroshitsuji to Yuki’s series. So far it seems that these bloggers say it is not unreasonable to think Yana may have been inspired, but that the core of the two series are incredibly different. These bloggers suggest that only people who consumed either or both series as by-passers would propose Kuro is a rip-off of Yuki’s work, and that after any level of actual reading, it becomes apparent Yana was inspired at most, and that otherwise it is just a logical product of 【England x Mysteries x Butler x Earls(**Check TLN)】 being a trend of the genre. One commenter said that: “if it’s fair to say “Kuro is a rip-off of Cain Saga”, it’s fair to say that all high-school shojo romance manga is a rip-off of another.”
Arguments against Kuro’s originality
There are indeed antis who do say that Kuro is the WcDonald’s of Cain Saga, claiming that it had been a deliberate choice to have a young Earl protagonist with a butler, and a silver haired antagonist.
There are comparisons made using  the content of both manga, but I cannot verify whether they are fair since I have not read Yuki’s work before. As such I shall refrain from commenting on it. All I can say with reasonable faith is that Yana has indeed never mentioned whether she had been inspired by the series publicly.
Translator’s note essay:
**‘Earls/Counts’ are the most popular noble rank among Japanese fiction writers because the titles that enter common (Japanese) ears are often either ‘duke’ or ‘earl/count’. (“What even is a marquis? Veecount? Fishcount?” Most people would say.) Dukes are often too high ranked and may come with social privileges that may make a main character too overpowered. Hence the slightly lower ranked ‘count’ gained much popularity among writers.
Many of you are perhaps already familiar with the ‘Below the Staircase II’ mini comic. This episode too reveals the product of common Japanese people’s standard vocabulary.
Tumblr media
When Yana and her team were working on the comic, Assistant-H wanted to refer to the Viscount, but instead of saying ‘Shishaku’ (子爵), she accidentally called him ‘koshaku’, meaning ‘insolent’.
In Japanese, the ‘子’ in 子爵 (Shishaku) is usually pronounced as ‘ko’. The word ‘viscount/Shishaku’ appears so rarely that this word is not registered in most people’s vocabulary. As such, upon witnessing the characters 子爵, it is not all that weird that somebody would not guess the special pronunciation of this word. Perhaps it is quite similar to the English counterpart of this word. Show a random person the word ‘Viscount’, and ask them how this word is pronounced, and most would probably not have guessed you don’t pronounce the ‘s’ at all.
Tumblr media
So, everybody who didn’t already know or watch the English dub of the anime first: how did you all pronounce the title ‘Viscount’ at first? ^^ Lemme know~! I certainly said ‘fishcount’ in English! (Yes, I also said ‘Koshaku’ at first XD)

A Southern Swordsman
Heroes' Odyssey: After a quick lookin at Z's battle with Destrudos, we witness the arrival of Zogu on earth, and how on the face of overwhelming destructive power, XiG stood with the Kaiju of earth and enabled Gaia and Agul to be reborn and overcome the odds.
Saber: Sneaking in to meet Master Logos is definitely a bold play, but that first scene does confirm Reika is getting orders from him. Zooous' rampage gives Storious a way to sneak in. While Yuri, Rintaro, Ren and Zooous all fight, Storious encounters the current Master Logos, who identifies him as one of the The First. A Southern Base Swordsman leads Touma to where Storious appears after finding his book. Storious' attempt to use the book knocks even himself down, allowing Touma to grab it, and as Legeiel attacks it activates and configures into Primitive Dragon, Touma, not himself, places Brave Dragon within, and transforms into the wild Primitive Dragon. And this is exactly what Master Logos wanted. Yuri senses this and rushes to the site, followed by Rintaro and Ren, and then Zooous, and all are witness to his destructive power.
Kiramager: Juru is dead, and they skipped the OP even though it isn't the final episode, we're getting serious here. Yodon sends Yodonna to retrieve the other Kanaema Stones. Energia to empower Oradin, Reversia to revert him to the Yodonna of 10 days ago, enabling Oradin to seal her, but as they go to use Destoria to destroy them, Yodon kills Yodonna, allowing his escape. Just as Yodon's victory seems assured, Crunchula grabs Illusia and Jouki appears, bringing Juru with it. OK, we're 3 for 3 now of members of the royal family placing their souls in Kiramai Stones rather than dying, but now Garza IS Jouki. But his soul gets burnt out by it, leaving Jouki in Juru's hands, dying wishing for a better relationship with Oradin.
Decade Vs Zi-O: So according to something I read, I've been watching these in the wrong order up until now, so let's try the correct order for these last two parts, where it'll matter most. Anyway, tensions are fraying amongst the survivors. Yusuke tries to keep the peace, nobody sees Oma Zi-O in the mirror behind him. The final round is announced, trying to find a treasure while avoiding being killed by Another Ryuki. Tsukasa finds a blade, Heurue finds a musket when Ora charges him with a cutlass, losing her nerve when he spots her, she then gets jumped and killed by Another Ryuki while he runs, only to be killed by the axe. While Sougo sits in melancholy the axe is thrown at him and he falls to his death. Tsukasa finds Yusuke, who shows the blade he found before attacking from behind with the axe, which Tsukasa blocks, I'm pretty sure he says this isn't his Yusuke, but Yusuke manages to stab him. As he gloats, Sougo appears, revealing himself as a robot, as does Heure, who reveals himself as Uchu Ninja Demost and flies away, and Misa reveals she was a spirit all along and vanishes. Yusuke rushes into the house to demand the reward, while Sougo helps Tsukasa in, where the masked jester arrives, revealing themself as Narutaki. He explains he was forced to organise the game by the True Sougo. Yusuke goes to attack him, but is killed by Oma Zi-O from the mirror. Narutaki explains that he brought Tsukasa here in the hopes he could stop Oma Zi-O, before Tsukasa and Sougo both Henshin, and Decade and Zi-O leap into the mirror. The pair fight with Oma Zi-O, tho is overpowering them when Diend, Kuuga and Kiva-la arrive to help, and Sougo hands Tsukasa the Saber Ridewatch. Despite the Riders' efforts, Oma Zi-O is victorious, and uses an attack that appears to unmake the world, and Sougo awakens, in school, to find it isolated in another world.
Zi-O Vs Decade: Swartz dubs Punk Sougo as Sougo D and Cute Sougo as Sougo E. Woz observes. Tsukuyomi and the boy are attacked by Inves, she defeats them but her leg is injured. The Sougo's continue their competition. Misa makes a move on Sougo C. Heure reveals Sougo C is actually Sougo A, C took his place to read the letter for him, but when Heure noticed he wasn't his Sougo C knocked him out, leading to the end of the previous episode. A explains C was only killed due to an unseen attack from Decade. B and D arrive as Tsukasa makes his presence known, explaining he intends to destroy the True Sougo, interesting D, who becomes Zi-O to challenge him, but Tsukasa defeats him and he vanishes. At night, Tsukuyomi tells the boy about Sougo and Geiz, who decides he wants to be named Sougo. Tsukasa looks like he might be vanishing. A helps Swartz prepare meat for the next day. The boy at A's festival stand finally gives up, but Geiz comes to see him. In the midst of the Sougo votes, Tsukasa let's the Inves into the school. Geiz fights the Inves while A goes to where B and E are confronting Tsukasa, who explains he's fighting to stop Oma Zi-O, the True Sougo. Sougo A and Tsukasa fight, while Sougo B stops E from joining. Tsukuyomi and the boy Sougo arrive at the site of Decade and Zi-O's battle, the site of Sougo awakening the boy's memories and power, as I understand it the world reset at the end of Decade Vs Zi-O reduced his power significantly, but when Sougo E becomes Zi-O and attacks him he still destroys him effortlessly. He tells them they must fight for the chance to acquire his power, but when Swartz appears and announces Sougo A has won the election, Sougo B decides not to fight and leaves, watched by Heure and Ora. The True Sougo becomes Oma Zi-O, his first attack at Sougo is taken by Heurue, who dies after giving Sougo his letter at last, Sougo then becomes Zi-O, and Tsukasa pulls out the K-Touch 21, transforming into Decade Complete Form 21, and Swartz also rejoins the fray, becoming Another Decade again. Despite the combined power of Zi-O and Decade, Oma Zi-O continuously overpowers them, and eventually deals a lethal blow to Tsukasa, who passes to Sougo the Saber Ridewatch, which he uses with the Decade Ridewatch to become Zi-O Decade Armour Saber Form. I'm not one to criticise the forms used in specials, but I really feel like they should have used Dragonic Knight for the undersuit here. As the two Zi-O's finishers meet, Tsukuyomi calls out for the boy Sougo to stop, his memories of their time together giving him enough pause that Zi-O manages to defeat to Oma Zi-O. Tsukasa vanishes from the world, seeming satisfied, and the world is restored around the school. Sougo B and Misa leave after some parting words. Sougo, Geiz and Tsukuyomi make their plans for the future, unaware that Swartz and Ora are watching them, both of them now in their Time Jacker attire. Ora asks about Heure, but gets little response, and they both vanish, observed by Woz, who awaits his King's next move.
Dogengers: The show makes sure to tell us all 5 heroes split the rent. Tanaka is forced to give a strategy meeting, he also had to give Yuki the rundown. Yabai Kamen heads his own meeting, and recalls the Insurgent Power Harassment that lead to his broken arm, though in a way he's glad only he was hurt by I-Doll. Fukuokaliber discusses the idea the Golden Seal could give them the edge up they need, while I-Doll decides to attack the heroes directly. Yamashiron recognises the Golden Seal from when he was upgraded into Tsuyobi Mode, but none of the other heroes remember seeing it. A package is delivered, and after Yuki signs for it the heroes notice I-Doll upstairs. The 5 heroes fight, but she's overpowering all of them, but Rookie, remembering all he's learnt from the others, asks them to leave things to him, asking I-Doll to explain what her worries are so he can help, angering her further. She goes to deal with the others when he calls out, saying he won't allow evil, she pauses at being told to wait, then charges, but Rookie manages to knock her down with a pinch. And then a change happens. And so the worried Yuki rushes to the door to greet Tanaka, to find him there holding the unconscious figure of a girl very much like I-Doll, in a school uniform.
Super Sentai Movie Ranger: Just going off vague summaries
Memory of Soulmates: Sounds like just a nice little interlude, the Gaisoulg Soul saves the day by absorbing something to do with the Minusaur involved. Kinjo Mana RIP.
Bebop Dream: Set around the time this would have originally come out, resolves the Minjo plot hook, establishes Garza still thinks of Crystalia. Apparently the Red Shovellow isn't important to anything happening, but Zabyun is used in a new Kiramazin formation.
Red Battle! All Sentai Battle: Reportedly set after episode 7 of the series, but I imagine there will have been some stuff introduced by then not featured in the movie. The main villain is a Tojitendo monster called Super Warumono World, who incorporates features of main villains of the 44 previous Sentai, list below, who summons an army of past monsters, most notably Basco ta Jolokia, Izayoi Kyuemon, Bangray and Zamigo Delma. After being defeated the Zenkaigers manage to summon the past 45 reds, who help them defeat the villains.
Villains: Kuro Juji Soto, Shuryo Iron Claw, Satan Egos, Queen Hedrian, Hell Saturn Soto, Soto Taboo, Teio Aton, Doctor Man, Seio Bazeu, Daitei La Deus, Chiteio Zeba, Daikyoju Bias, Dai Boma Teio Lagorn, Ginga Choju Vulgyre, Kyodaiju Raguem, Majo Bandora, Gorma XV, Daimaou, Bacchus Wrath, Sochi Gynamo, Dr. Hinelar, Zeihab Seicho, Meio Zylpheeza, Don Dolnero, Kyukyoku Org Senki, Shuryo Tau Zant, Jameishin Dezumozoriya, Agent Abrella, Zettaishin N Ma, Daishinkan Gajah, Long, Soridaijin Yogoshimacritein, Chimatsuri Doukoku, Kyuseishu no Brajira, Ackdos Gil, Messiah Reboot, Hyakumen Shinkan Chaos, Z Shin, Kibaoni Gengetsu, Shin Ginis, Don Armage, Dogranio Yabun, Eras and Yodon Kotei.

My Review of In/Spectre
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? Let’s see what my check-list was back when I picked this up during the winter time. Does Crunchyroll have immediate rights to play it? Yes! Do I have one more slot open for weekly showings? Yes! Are you in the mood to hear Mamoru Miyano right now? Always! Let’s do it!
Tumblr media
Kotoko Iwanaga is used to the abnormal and out of place situations. When she was 11 years old, she went missing for two weeks. During that time, demons asked her to become their “God of Wisdom”. However, Iwanaga lost her right eye and left leg as a result of this power. Fast-forward approximately 7 years later when she meets a college-aged male named Kuro Sakuragawa. She found a fascination with him, but kept her distance due to him being engaged to another woman named Saki.
But Kuro’s life changed when he and his girlfriend were on vacation and saw a kappa and the situation turned near-deadly. Due to an abnormality with Kuro, whenever it looks like he’s on the verge of death, he comes back to life. Thing is, his girlfriend Saki was absolutely set aback by this development and they wound up breaking up. With the news of Kuro and Saki splitting up, Iwanaga seizes this opportunity to spend more time with this young man as she asks for his assistance with dealing with the supernatural…

And to be her boyfriend!
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: At the moment, Crunchyroll is the only one with authority to this anime and several weeks after the premier, they gave us an English dub. So far, so good! I’m getting a chance to hear a few of the newer voice actors and even some veterans like Cristina Vee. Now that some time has passed, all of the episodes are finally dubbed after a long hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As you already know from sentence one Kuro spoke, yes, that is Mamoru Miyano playing another main lead role. Luckily for me, he isn’t spazzy and he isn’t a holy asshole. Next to him, we have Akari Kitou who I’m hearing quite a bit of as of recent. I really enjoyed her performance as this insightful little lady. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE: *Iwanaga is played by Akari Kitou (known for Aru on Hitoribocchi, Nene on Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun, and Kaho on Blend S)
*Kuro is played by Mamoru Miyano (known for Cilan on Pokemon BW, Light on Death Note, Tamaki on Ouran HSHC, Koutaro on Zombieland Saga, Rin on Free!, Death the Kid on Soul Eater, and Tsukiyama on Tokyo Ghoul)
*Saki is played by Misato Fukuen (known for Georgia on Pokemon BW, Chibiusa on Sailor Moon: Crystal, Iggy on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure Pt. 3, Eruka on Soul Eater, Yami on To Love Ru, and Yin on Darker Than Black)
ENGLISH CAST: *Iwanaga is played by Lizzie Freeman (known for Cardinal on SAO: Alicization and Trish on Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure: Pt. 5)
*Kuro is played by Brandon Winckler (known for Eugeo on SAO: Alicization and Dale on If It’s for My Daughter…)
*Saki is played by Lauren Landa (known for Kyouko on Madoka Magica, Michiru/Sailor Neptune on Sailor Moon [redub], Annie on Attack on Titan, Juno on Beastars, Xenovia on High School DxD, and Sakuya on SAO)
SHIPPING: Well, let’s see if I can make any sense out of this.
Tumblr media
*Iwanaga x Kuro: I guess it was love at first sight for Iwanaga as she seemed to have developed a crush when she first met him at the hospital. And you could tell how disappointed she was when Kuro’s relationship with Saki was growing. Even when Kuro is still in the post-breakup mode, Iwanaga has the balls to ask him to enter a relationship with her in the span of a single episode. And even after the two-year time-skip…I guess they are in a relationship. At least according to Iwanaga they are! It’s just that Kuro is so damned uninterested it’s so hard to tell. I’m not sure if I’m fully on board with this ship. Mostly because of Kuro’s disinterested attitude whenever he’s around his “girlfriend”! Iwanaga is very controlling in this relationship and prone to jealousy when Saki re-enters the picture later in the Steel Lady Nanase arc.
Tumblr media
*Kuro x Saki: Yes, Saki was Kuro’s former girlfriend. Actually, it was more than that! They were freakin’ engaged! But because Saki got freaked out by the fact that Kuro could regenerate his body if he gets severely injured, she ended the relationship. Yeah, I can totally see how that would be shocking for anyone to go through. Due to the mystery that Iwanaga and Saki were trying to solve, the romance talks kinda had to be put to the side. It seems as though near the end that Saki has put her feelings of Kuro in the past and seems to have moved on for the most part. Plus when Saki was engaged to Kuro, she felt inferior to ANOTHER past love of Kuro’s. And now we gotta talk about…
Tumblr media
*Kuro x Rikka: They’re cousins! BLOOD COUSINS! But Kuro has a special place in his heart for his sickly cousin! I mean, his thoughts of being greeted by Rikka at home compared to his real girlfriend are freakin’ damning. Plus both of these people have the same anomolie courtesy of their fucked up family. I’m not sure after the whole Steel Lady Nanase mess if Kuro’s perception of Rikka has changed for the worse. I just know that there was definitely something between those two. Kuro brings all his girlfriends to meet Rikka only for Rikka to say something like, “she’s not your type”.
Tumblr media
ENDING: For the majority of the series, Iwanaga and Kuro have found themselves in the midst of a mystery involving the death of a famous actress. Seems simple enough in an anime like this, an idol (Karin Nanase) dies suddenly by a steel beam to the face and comes back to haunt the world of the living as a ghost (later named Steel Lady Nanase). But it can’t be that simple! There’s gotta be reasons for Steel Lady Nanase’s existence and Iwanaga is gonna figure it out one way or another.
Tumblr media
I mean, she knows the real truth. It’s just that someone is pulling the strings behind Steel Lady Nanase still causing havoc. She’s still running amok due to a fan website dedicated to the ghost. And that site has A LOT of traction with fans of all sorts. Add to this mind-fuck, Kuro’s “lovely” cousin Rikka is the administrator for the website. As I’ve mentioned before, she has that immortality power that her cousin possesses as well. And Rikka uses that power to keep things going with Steel Lady Nanase.
Iwanaga went through several scenarios to disprove Steel Lady Nanase’s existence. And all but one of those theories were poked by skeptics and even Rikka who was stalking the forums. It wasn’t until Iwanaga came up with the theory of Nanase meeting a woman who looks exactly like her and that her doppleganger was the one that died at the construction site. Somehow that was the theory millions of fans took as truth and this was how Iwanaga was able to take down Rikka and her fansite.
So everything is gonna go back to somewhat normal. Karin Nanase can rest in peace, the spirits around the area can rest easy without being tormented by a crazy bitch swinging a steel beam, Saki goes back to work as a police officer, Rikka is still lurking around, and we get a cute moment between Iwanaga and Kuro.
Tumblr media
This anime started out strong, but once you realize that this Steel Lady Nanase arc was going to be covered in 10 episodes out of a 12 episode series, it kinda leaves this series a little underwhelming. The idea of having one character with the ability to communicate with spirits and another character with an anomolie in his body preventing him from dying seemed really interesting. Especially when you have someone like Iwanaga trying to solve mysteries and coming up with the best case scenario in every case! But that’s just it, we only got two cases in this 12 episode series. The manga still seems pretty new and so I’m hoping to see more development with Iwanaga and Kuro. It’s an okay series, it’s just that I give a hesitant recommendation with the warning that this will drag a bit when we’re stuck in Steel Lady Nanase hell for 10 episodes. In an anime season that was filled to the brim with mystery animes, I actually found myself a little more invested in Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun. But that’s just me! You guys make your own judgments on which mystery anime of 2020 wins your vote.
Tumblr media
Final note: The OP is a banger and as for the ED, it’s always a treat whenever Mamoru Miyano is singing!
If you would like to watch In/Spectre, Crunchyroll has all 12 episodes available for streaming in both sub and dub.

ALSO ONE MORE THING LOL, headcanons on a crossover au horror movie night?
This ended up really long but I hope you love it!! It's also probably because it's headcanons which I really live for. BUT ALSO YES OF COURSE I LIVE FOR THE CROSSOVER AU AND ALSO FOR HALLOWEEN!! All Zeta characters belong to Emi, FOLLOW @zetacomic !! Miho also was made by @polar-stars !! Isao was made by @nightcrownsking!! Stan them
Movie Picking
-Zuro sets out a whole bunch of movies, ranging from mockumentary horror films to you wouldn't be able to sleep for a week horror films on the table.
-Shoya is set on watching JAWS series. He wants to see his family win. Zuro adds one movie to the list because it was his bro's request.
-Haru comes in, SHE PICKS A MOVIE. She doesn't realize she's scarier than the movie marathon that is coming, but well- her choice will be included. Or else she will be angry. No one wants her angry. Ayame approves on her choice and recommends a movie. Zuro places her recommendation away. Ayame was never best to pick one unless it was romance movies.
-TAI AND MAI SAY THEY WANT MURDER ON SCREEN. Their sugesstion? Accepted. There was a slasher horror, which did include murder. They would probably enjoy it that day.
-Izami tosses a few recommendations. He picks the one with the horror that pulls on the most heartstrings yet still scares the crap out of people. Suggestion accepted.
-Isao gives a movie. Immediately burned by Sepheir. She does not trust this man.
-So far they have one Jaws movie, a film Haru wanted, slasher horror and an angsty horror movie. Seems good enough. They will be watching from 6-3, but people can choose to sleep earlier (if they can after that).
Movie Preparation
-Ko spends SO MUCH. Chips, Sodas, Full blown Meals, Popcorn, Cotton Candy, Everything--- For EVERYONE. He splits them all evenly and everyone has their personal food and drink box.
-Makoto is SURPISED over how much things he bought without thinking... He shouldn't spend his money like this! But it was for Zygos and Protezioni... but still! That's carelessly using money!
-Makoto gives him a good talk
-Yuuki is lowkey anxious over the movie choices but Asuka ends up comforting him and calming him down. Tells him that Big Sis Asuka is always there! Yuuki calms down fairly well!
-Yuri is watching Shigure cry even before the movie starts. She's calling him a dumbass and tells him it hasn't started yet. Turns our Shigure was crying over something else and she facepalms.
-Romano is hugging his paperwork but Hide is trying to tell him to relax for once and let it go. He follows for once and believes in her words. She says it is best to let himself not do work since Halloween only happens once a year. He is very convinced.
-Ace is worried if the kids can handle it, but he prepares a comfort blanket in advanced in case any of them want to go under one later. There are 10 comfort blankets with stuffed toys under it. Tsukki helps in gathering pillows.
-The movie marathon starts.
Movie Watching
-Jaws was the first to come.
-All of Zygos turn their head to Shoya. Protezioni proceeds to do the same.
-"I wanted to see my fellow scalys."
"THIS DOESN'T FIT THE ATMOSPHERE, SHITHEAD"
"Jun, your temper is worse than your height"
"YOU PIECE OF SHIT"
-Eis tries to calm Junko down, Zuro laughs about the whole thing. Fortunato facepalms and tells them to calm the fuck down. Maemi knew this would happen. He is very tired. Kaito tries to stop them.
-Anyway Jaws was being watched by several other people. Kuro thoughts the sharks were dolphins. "Dudeeee, they're sharks? I thought sharks were bigger." "THOSE ARE WHALES, KURO"
-Kana is laughing her ass off at this moment, Ren makes a dramatic speech in the middle "Oh whale, oh shark, what is your true reflection-" Shima is so done with this shit. What's worse- the speech or the movie? Shinji talks about how different everyone's aura is because of one single movie.
-Tilear is too busy snickering over Team Omega to focus, she is enjoying. Izami is actually watching the movie. Asks Oliviero if his fang was close to a shark's. Oliviero said he was more of cub or something. Ko wants them to be quiet so he could watch the film. They don't become quiet.
-Haru is excited. She says she brought up the next movie! Everyone is wondering what she picked. It turns out to be a psychological horror! They did not expect this, but the movie was fine.
-Kaito SCREAMS when he sees something happens, he is seeking for hug. For comfort. He cannot handle this. Aki decides to hug him and comfort him. They go to the comfort blankets.
-Tsuyobi jumps off the couch when something happens, Mitsu is the one who takes care of a shaking Tsuyobi. Hoping he is is okay.
-Alderardo names everything wrong with the film because it's a psychological horror and not a lot of things makes sense. Haru yells at him to shut up. He shuts up. Tana is glad he was able to shut the fuck up. Wants to thank Haru for that.
-Masao feels like an undefeated entity because he didn't back out in the movie unlike Kaito. HE WAS THE SUPERIOR LEADER. THE BRAVER LEADER. THE--- Kaya tells him to stop being like that and just sit down and enjoy the movie. Masao ends up sitting down and watching the movie.
-Anzu is clinging to Hide, Hide allows her to cling to her. Eis is clinging to Ella, who looks around but awkwardly pats Eis's back. Team 2 is making a theory silently because they are the most observant team. ALL THEIR THEORIES WERE PROVEN RIGHT.
-Miho comes in out of nowhere, a smile on her face, a flashlight underneath her. "Tea?" EVERYONE THOUGHT SHE LOOKED LIKE A GHOST. Turns out Ami was holding the flashlight below her. She is now officially dubbed as the tea ghost. She looked like one of the characters.
-The next is the slasher film the Murder Twins chose. THEY BOTH BRING UP MURDER. Riichi looks interested, he brings up he learned some sneaky moves through this movie! A lot of people look at them and see them as a very dangerous group if they worked together.
-Yuuki does get anxious over some parts, but Asuka is there to comfort him. Yarohe ends up being his comfort teddy bear. Ko just silently watches the rest to see how they are doing.
-Bren and Tilear have a small discussion because there is a lot of things to talk about since there are weapons in it. Tilear asks Yuuki about a question about his gun and says he doesn't need to feel anxious because he'd be able to shoot the man with no problem. Asuka pats the back of Yuuki who is internally screaming because someone believes in his skill.
-Marmi ends up gathering notes and he sees how Riichi was able to use these notes for something. Celes predicts what's happens next, saying it was a common strategy that is found in horror films. Calls the cast dumb and she isn't surprised that they are dying.
-The strategists talk about something together and make the best plan to escape if they ever end up in a situation like that. Their plan is the best plan ever created and if they were in a horror movie, they will 10000000% survive. Celes, Hide, Maemi, Miho and Shinji were a group who'd never die in a horror film.
-Ami mentions things that could have happened and says she would be a better murderer than the main antagonist of the slasher film. The stealth experts agree with her. Kiyaru also brings that up and Team 2 all agree with her. Bernando says he would fight the antagonist and win. The whole team 4 agrees. Akira comments about how unrealistic it is and the cops are doing a horrible job, brings up both Zygos and Protezioni are way better than the cops. Says the cops are useless in the movie.
-The talk is about murder and how they survive. The movie was overall enjoyable though and it was a great slasher film. There were holes to it, but the Murder Twins loved the blood.
-Okay now was the horror film that had the most emotional scenes. Kaito goes out of the comfort blanket, and Izami gives a small warning that it gets pretty sad. Sepheir comments she knows the film and it does get pretty sad. Everyone knows it's seriously shit sad when Sepheir says that.
-The horror parts were scary as fuck. People jumped from their seats. Kaito wanted to hide again and he screamed again. He is not the best with horror movies. Ayame comments about how this was really disturbing and Hiyaro agrees with her comments. Junko says if she saw a face like that, she's stab the fucker.
-Okay but when the sad parts come? PEOPLE BEGIN CRYING. Kaito starts bawling his eyes out instead of screaming and the whole Zetas decided to comfort their leader. Anzu starts tearing up and Hide tries to cheer her up but yells at Izami for showing that movie. Izami yells back that he warns them. Shigure is crying so bad and Yuri awkwardly comforts him but he just cries even louder. Aki is crying and Allen is in panic. Rika is silently crying and Akira is just allowing her to lean on him.
-It ends up with people crying because of fear or because of sadness. Shoya laughs at some parts and no one knows why he laughs. "LOOK HE DIED" "It isnT FUNNY SHO" "IT WAS IN A STUPID WAY" "SHO"
-Mitsu cries and the whole Zeta is prepared to fight whoever made Mitsu cry. It turns out it was the film. It's just that emotional.
-Movie night ends after the whole roller coaster ride of emotions
-A lot end up sleeping in the living room. Reo and Namito were actually busy doing trick or treating and they slept early like the good kids they are! They wake up to this sight and wonder what happened! Good children through and through.

Shallow Dive: Cardcaptor Sakura
Let’s get this out of the way right now.
The English dub of this show titled simply “Cardcaptors” is without a doubt, the worst English dub of anime ever, of all time. Yes, even worse than the 4kids One Piece. It completely butchers the show by cutting out VAST swaths of character development, motivations, plotlines, and even full episodes. It is an abomination of the highest form and there is next to nothing redeemable about it. That’s not on the voice actors, that’s on the adaptors. I’ll defend English dubbed anime always, but even I can’t stomach what was done to this show, considering it’s impact and legacy. You do yourself a massive disservice if you watch anything except the original Japanese here.
Now that that’s done, after the cut let’s take at what is quite possibly one of the greatest pieces of Shoujo manga of all time, and manga in general: CLAMP’s Cardcaptor Sakura.
youtube
Cardcaptor Sakura (CCS) is a special piece of entertainment. While not as well known as Dragon Ball, or as memorable as something like Cowboy Bebop or even Naruto. CCS is one of the rare pieces of work that can be enjoyed completely by both adults and children. This is important because for CCS, unlike other shows it influenced within the magical girl genre, is a show built specifically for children.
That means there is no “otaku-ness’ to the show, no pandering fanservice, no sexualization of the characters, no trying to appeal to toy collectors and overall anime fans. Cardcaptor Sakura is meant to be something to be watched by children, and those children to one day watch it with their own kids. There are few shows in both the East and West that are able to be enjoyed by both kids, and the parents who often have to throw the show in for the fifth time (Hey Arnold, Recess and the first three seasons of Spongebob Squarepants are notable examples from my experience)
This also plays into the overall theme and atmosphere of Cardcaptor Sakura: it’s complete and total embrace of innocence. The world of Sakura Kinomoto and her friends is one of sheer unironic perfection. Everyone is kind, everyone is nice and everyone seems to respect everyone else. Adults are shown to be loving and respectful members of society. Teachers are trusted and admired, and love is something that is embraced regardless of sex or gender or even age (more on that in a bit).
In term of story, CCS often follows a ‘monster of the week’ formula where during an event or something in Sakura’s life, she has to confront and capture one of the 52 (19 in the manga) Clow Cards. These are never life-endangering events, and often the bigger crisis comes from more simple and realistic things such as being late for school, or Sakura ruining her father’s work when trying to capture a card. However while this could make the show episodic, and in a sense it is. Things are connected by both of the overall arching plot, and the heavy emphasis on character development and interaction.
Throughout the 75 episode series, we see Sakura interact and develop relationships with a myriad of different characters. From her best friend (and series favorite) Tomoyo, her magical sidekick Kero, her longstanding crush Yukito, her beloved but teasing older brother Touya, and her rival and eventually true love Syaroan Li just to name a few. It is these interactions that make the show what it is, and the plotlines that are carried between each character throughout the overall main story is what gives CCS it’s the greatest strength. Things like Syaoran realizing his feelings for Sakura and vice versa is treated with a reverence and grace that isn’t shown much in Western animation, and in turns is benefited by CCS’s overall tolerance.
Like I’ve said before, Japan’s history and relationship with LGTBQ rights and people are...checkered at best, despite being heavily engrained in much of manga and anime. Cardcaptor Sakura is no exception, and the show is famous for it’s very tolerant and accepting view of queer love and queer relationships. This is mostly shown by Sakura herself, as being the innocent child raised in a loving and caring home, she has no bigotry and prejudice in her body, and experiences infatuation and love to both boys and girls throughout the story. It is not just here though, as each of the main characters Tomoyo, Syaoran and Yukito all have an attraction to someone of the same sex. While it might be considered “tame’ or a ‘token effort’ by today’s standards, and CCS never endorses or takes a position in LGBTQ rights, it has been seen by many as a standard bearer and trailblazer back when such things were still very much considered taboo (and all mention or implication of any queer relationships was stricken from the original English dub)
Are there some problems? A few. The tolerant nature of the show does have some rather eyebrow-raising things (there is one relationship that was actually cut from the anime because it was too much even for them), and the monster of the week format CAN get a little tedious at times. It can also be almost “too cute” and sometimes that might get in the way of a scene or important moment. Kuro’s character is pretty much “eh” and the addition of anime-only character Mei-ling into the cast rubbed some fans the wrong way. However they are minor when compared to everything CCS does right and well.
Cardcaptor Sakura is a show that wants to wrap you up in a warm blanket, hand you a cup of hot chocolate and take you a loving and fun journey through the world of a magical girl just living her life. It is sweet, it is gentle, it is loving, and it is kind. It is a show that will make you laugh, cheer, cry and make you go ‘just one more episode’ more than once. Anime is often a world of energy that takes you from one high to another. Cardcaptor Sakura is like floating peacefully downstream on a fluffy cloud on a sunny day. If you are feeling down and want something to lighten your mood or put a smile on your face. I highly suggest you check this show out.
Next time, we take a look at a show that came out more recently, and how sometimes being a love letter to a genre is just enough. Don’t miss it.

4Kids Korner - Episode 8
Hey guys, sorry I'm late, I was busy this weekend, but now I'm back to bring you some really cool items that late so good, they came in a *package deal* (only the real fans will get the joke.
So, starting things off is my very first toy in the collection: the Rononoa Zolo Pi-ripz action figure!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This figure, though the box says it hit stores in 2006, was actually manufactured in 2005 according to the instruction manual. I had a fun time carefully removing it from the box and putting it together. Zolo comes with his three swords, their respective holders (Which the toy swords don't actually fit in) a detachable coat and a rip cord which you are supposed to use to wind him up, but twisting him around with your hands works just fine. The toy's main feature is being able to spin around in circles from the waist up while swinging his swords around like a madman. Unfortunately, he can't stand up on his own, but he's still fun to pose as long as you have something to prop him up against.
And what's even cooler is the demo DVD that comes with it! The first thing to note about it is that it features an unused design for Sanji's lollipop. In early promotional art as well as the version of the Japanese opening, "We Are" made for a licensing expo in 2004, Sanji can be seen with a slightly more stylized lollipop which features Three blue stripes around the stick. I'm guessing the reason this was changed in the final cut was the original lollipop would take longer to draw. But still, it's cool to see it whenever it just so happened To slip through the cracks, and a clip included on the disc features it as well.
Speakinh of which, let's get to the meat of the disc. One Piece: The Hunt Begins features multiple videos to whet young viewers' appetites for the full show on TV. First of all is a video telling Gold Roger's history and Luffy's goal to find One Piece, which also includes the theme song. (fun fact: it's also the video I used to introduce my little brother to the show before we watched it together.) Next comes a set of videos labeled as "The Heroes." It includes introductory videos for Luffy, Sanji and Zolo (I.E. The straw hats who recieved action figures.) Each video explains the character's personality, their abilites, and their signature dreams. (Also included in Sanji's video is a short clip from the show which features an alternate edit for lollipop, whose stick appears larger and wider in the clip. Immediately after "The Heroes" is "The Villains" which introduces every villain introduced between episode 2 to episode 30 (Captain Morgan to Arlomg) in the same fashion as the heroes. Then comes music videos for the 4Kids One Piece songs "You Can't Turn The Tide" and "Be A Pirate" which both include footage from sagas that were never dubbed by 4Kids. Speaking of undubbed footage, up next is "Top 5 Battles Of One Piece," a set of condensed battles from the show that had been covered up to the production of the DVD. These include Luffy VS Buggy, Zolo VS Mohawk, Zolo VS the Meowban Brothers, Luffy VS Kuro, and Luffy VS Along, which interestingly includes a piece of footage that was cut from the fight for time, and dubbed for the demo disc by putting voice recordings and music from other episodes over the footage. Finally, there's "Luffy's Gum Gum Techniques," five different compilations of Luffy using his Gum Gum attacks. These include Gum Gum Blast, Gum Gum Whip, Gum Gum Rapid Fire, Gum Gum Balloon, and Gum Gum Rocket. Included in the Gum Gum Balloon compilation is another piece of cut footage dubbed in the same fashion as the Arlong video mentioned before. Also, a long version of the credits for the show is included, which features the 2005 4Kids TV logo animation, which I love.
Man! That was a lot! But we're not done yet. Next up is Shaman King: Master Of Spirits for the Game Boy Advance (2004)
Tumblr media
I haven't played the game much since it arrived late, but what I've experienced is pretty cool. Theres a ton of stages to unlock, which all branch out from each other on the world map as you progress. A lot of these stages involve abilities you must collect over the course of the game in order to progress. One feature I really like, gameplay wise, is the fact that you can collect a huge amount of special abilities by befriending various game-exclusive ghosts in each level. What makes this game really special, though, is that it features a whole slew of voice clips recorded at 4Kids using the show's voice cast. And let me tell you, they did a great job, this is a custom made game, after all.
That's all I've got for this episode. It was a big one, I know. But now you can relax until next time, when I reveal another toy with another Demo DVD.

In order to pursue his childhood dream, he trained relentlessly for three years—and lost all of his hair in the process. Now, Saitama is incredibly powerful, so much so that no enemy is able to defeat him in battle. In fact, all it takes to defeat evildoers with just one punch has led to an unexpected problem—he is no longer able to enjoy the thrill of battling and has become quite bored. This all changes with the arrival of Genos, a 19-year-old cyborg, who wishes to be Saitama's disciple after seeing what he is capable of. Genos proposes that the two join the Hero Association in order to become certified heroes that will be recognized for their positive contributions to society, and Saitama, shocked that no one knows who he is, quickly agrees. And thus begins the story of One Punch Man, an action-comedy that follows an eccentric individual who longs to fight strong enemies that can hopefully give him the excitement he once felt and just maybe, he'll become popular in the process –MAL One Punch Man is quite different from other action anime, as rather than watch our protagonist struggle to become stronger, our hero has already reached his goals. The series takes this plot and shows us the emptiness that follows achieving a lifelong goal. Showing us the journey to one's goal is more fulfilling than actually reaching our goal. https://youtu.be/tMblzsXwAKo
22. Terra Fromer (Terraformars)
Episodes 26 + OVA| Aired Fall 2014 | Produced by LINDENFILMS
Tumblr media
Terra Formars is a show that is short, violent and an action anime that is simple to understand. During the 21st century, humanity attempted to colonize Mars by sending two species which could endure the harsh environment of the planet to terraform it—algae and cockroaches. However, they did not anticipate the species' remarkable ability to adapt. Now in the 26th century, a lethal disease known as the Alien Engine Virus has arrived on Earth, and the cure is suspected to be found only on Mars. The problem is, Mars in the present is overrun by creatures known as "Terraformars," incredibly powerful and intelligent humanoid cockroaches that mutated from those originally sent to the planet. The Annex I team, consisting of a hundred men and women genetically enhanced with characteristics of powerful organisms from earth, has been sent to Mars on a mission to find the cause of the Alien Engine Virus and to help cure humanity—signalling the start of the crew's fight for survival –MAL Terra Formars is an action sci-fi horror anime that deals with humanity fighting insects much like the films and series "Starship Troopers". Plot-wise it's not the best cause they try to add so much into it, but for action, it is pretty good. https://youtu.be/KVx9GrpN5lU
21. Katekyo Hitman Reborn! (Reborn!)
Episodes 203 + OVA| Aired Fall 2006 | Produced by Artland
Tumblr media
Katekyo Hitman Reborn is definitely a well-made anime for its comedy and action. There is no putting it lightly—Tsunayoshi Sawada is just no good. He is clumsy, talentless, and desperately in love with the school idol Kyouko Sasagawa, a girl so completely out of his league. Dubbed "Loser Tsuna" by his classmates, he seems to be the very personification of failure in the guise of a middle-schooler.Tsuna's boring life takes an extraordinary twist when he encounters the mysterious Reborn, who happens to be a hitman... and shockingly, a baby! Sent from the strongest Mafia family in Italy, Reborn is assigned the daunting mission of preparing the dull middle schooler to succeed the ninth boss of the notorious Vongola family, who is on the brink of retirement. The dull boy has a gruelling road ahead, but with the help of his new criminal affiliates and his peculiar home tutor, perhaps even Loser Tsuna can achieve greatness –MAL Katekyo Hitman Reborn plot builds up slowly, with the first 20 episodes comedy-heavy. We will watch Tsuna change from being a clumsy weakling, to slowly growing up and become more dependable. It's a show that will definitely keep you at the edge of your seat. https://youtu.be/40pfu7XqWok
20. Kuro no Keiyakusha (Darker than Black)
Episodes 37 + OVA| Aired Spring 2007 | Produced by Bones
Tumblr media
Darker than Black is definitely an anime that takes you on a journey with unique characters and an unusual style of story telling. It has been 10 years since Heaven's Gate appeared in South America and Hell's Gate appeared in Japan, veiling the once familiar night sky with an oppressive skyscape. Their purposes unknown, these Gates are spaces in which the very laws of physics are ignored. With the appearance of the Gates emerged Contractors, who, in exchange for their humanity, are granted supernatural abilities. In the Japanese city surrounding Hell’s Gate, Section 4 Chief Misaki Kirihara finds herself at odds with an infamous Contractor codenamed Hei. Called "Black Reaper" in the underground world, Hei, like his associates, undertakes missions for the mysterious and ruthless Syndicate while slowly peeling back the dark layers covering a nefarious plot that threatens the very existence of Contractors. From the mind of Tensai Okamura comes a sci-fi thriller taking the form of a subtle exposé on a war in which political positions and justice have no sway—a war waged exclusively in the shadows –MAL If you like shows about people with supernatural powers and action, I think you should definitely watch this series. It's a show that doesn't give too much away in the beginning but as the story progresses you can piece the whole plot together. The characters are also brilliantly done especially the contractors that are supposed to be void of human emotions. https://youtu.be/goYEIQT5m8U
19. JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken (JoJo's Bizarre Adventure)
Episodes 152 + OVA| Aired Fall 2012 | Produced by David Production Jojo's Bizarre Adventure is definitely an anime that takes you on an adventure. It's a series that just keeps getting better and better. Jojo's Bizarre Adventure follows the stories of a different generation of the JoJo family, whose members have unique powers that they use to fight supernatural enemies.Kujo Jotaro is a normal, popular Japanese high-schooler, until he thinks that he is possessed by a spirit, and locks himself in prison. After seeing his grandfather, Joseph Joestar, and fighting Joseph's friend Muhammad Abdul, Jotaro learns that the "Spirit" is actually Star Platinum, his Stand, or fighting energy given a semi-solid form. Later, his mother gains a Stand, and becomes sick. Jotaro learns that it is because the vampire Dio Brando has been revived 100 years after his defeat to Jonathan Joestar, Jotaro's great-great-grandfather. Jotaro decides to join Joseph and Abdul in a trip to Egypt to defeat Dio once and for all –MAL I personally like the way the story follows a different member of the Joestar family? It's an anime that lives up to the hype that surrounds it. Though it's an anime that requires a bit of getting used to, it sometimes doesn't take itself seriously but when it does, it keeps you at the edge of your seat. https://youtu.be/EO08vMz73YY

These are the words of Junk Dog, an underground fighter of Megalo Box, an evolution of boxing that utilizes mechanical limbs known as Gear to enhance the speed and power of its users. Taken out in a single round, Junk Dog is left with a challenge: "If you're serious about fighting me again, then fight your way up to me and my ring."Filled with overwhelming excitement and backed by the criminal syndicate responsible for his thrown matches, Junk Dog enters Megalonia: a world-spanning tournament that will decide the strongest Megalo Boxer of them all. Having no name of his own, he takes on the moniker of "Joe" as he begins his climb from the very bottom of the ranked list of fighters. With only three months left to qualify, Joe must face off against opponents the likes of which he has never fought in order to meet the challenge of his rival –MAL Megalo Box is a great anime that really asks a big question of how much pain, time and energy one is willing to give and endure while chasing their dreams. And that resonates with me a lot. https://youtu.be/-j8sX95vkfc

Psycho-pass takes place in a futuristic setting, with interesting characters and weapons, where you are constantly being monitored. Justice, and the enforcement of it, has changed. In the 22nd century, Japan enforces the Sibyl System, an objective means of determining the threat level of each citizen by examining their mental state for signs of criminal intent, known as their Psycho-Pass. However, as she works alongside veteran Enforcer Shinya Kougami, she soon learns that the Sibyl System's judgments are not as perfect as her fellow Inspectors assume. With everything she has known turned on its head, Akane wrestles with the question of what justice truly is, and whether it can be upheld through the use of a system that may already be corrupt –MAL Psycho-Pass is an amazing action anime that shouldn't be missed. It's thought-provoking showing how sanity does not always equal morality. https://youtu.be/DgDBzAHg4wU

Black Lagoon an action anime with a lot of mayhem featuring modern-day pirates, outrageously amazing action scenes and interesting characters. It's a story with a lot of ups and downs that tries to tackle themes like existentialism -what are we here for? what's our purpose? and morality - what is really wrong or right? Plus it has gun-wielding nuns, sociopath maids and the awesome Revy. https://youtu.be/d4EbGC7fKnQ
13. Vinland Saga
Episodes 24| Aired Summer 2019 | Produced by Wit Studio
Tumblr media
If you ever wondered what watching an angry Sasuke after he left the hidden Leaf village would be like, I give you Vinland Saga. Young Thorfinn grew up listening to the stories of old sailors that had travelled the ocean and reached the place of legend, Vinland. It's said to be warm and fertile, a place where there would be no need for fighting—not at all like the frozen village in Iceland where he was born, and certainly not like his current life as a mercenary. War is his home now. Though his father once told him, "You have no enemies, nobody does. There is nobody who it's okay to hurt," as he grew, Thorfinn knew that nothing was further from the truth. The war between England and the Danes grows worse with each passing year. Death has become commonplace, and the Viking mercenaries are loving every moment of it. Allying with either side will cause a massive swing in the balance of power, and the Vikings are happy to make names for themselves and take any spoils they earn along the way. Among the chaos, Thorfinn must take his revenge and kill the man who murdered his father, Askeladd. The only paradise for the Vikings, it seems, is the era of war and death that rages on –MAL Vinland Saga is the Berserk Adaptation we deserved. With stunning artwork, consistent and solid animation and characters you will connect with. It's definitely one of the best anime of 2019. https://youtu.be/b7ptrklt1sc
12. Samurai Champloo
Episodes 26| Aired Spring 2004 | Produced by Manglobe
Tumblr media
Samurai Champloo is one of the most unconventional, thrilling action anime about samurai. Fuu Kasumi is a young and clumsy waitress who spends her days peacefully working in a small teahouse. That is, until she accidentally spills a drink all over one of her customers! With a group of samurai now incessantly harassing her, Fuu desperately calls upon another samurai in the shop, Mugen, who quickly defeats them with his wild fighting technique, utilizing movements reminiscent to that of breakdancing. Unfortunately, Mugen decides to pick a fight with the unwilling ronin Jin, who wields a more precise and traditional style of sword fighting, and the latter proves to be a formidable opponent. The only problem is, they end up destroying the entire shop as well as accidentally killing the local magistrate's son.For their crime, the two samurai are captured and set to be executed. However, they are rescued by Fuu, who hires the duo as her bodyguards. Though she no longer has a place to return to, the former waitress wishes to find a certain samurai who smells of sunflowers and enlists the help of the now exonerated pair to do so. Despite initially disapproving of this idea, the two eventually agree to assist the girl in her quest; thus, the trio embarks upon an adventure to find this mysterious warrior—that is, if Fuu can keep Mugen and Jin from killing each other.Set in an alternate Edo Period of Japan, Samurai Champloo follows the journey of these three eccentric individuals in an epic quest full of action, comedy, and dynamic sword fighting, all set to the beat of a unique hip-hop infused soundtrack –MAL It's a series that takes the usual "power of love and friendship" plot most animes takes and throws it out the window. Throwing a trio of mismatch characters together and forming an unlikely team, we will all be sad to see part ways at the end of their journey together. I'm still hoping for a second season. https://youtu.be/MV9sMJau674
11. Tokyo Ghoul
Episodes 48 + OVA| Aired Summer 2014 | Produced by Studio Pierrot
Tumblr media
Tokyo Ghoul is an anime I looked forward to watching after reading the plot, that I immediately started reading the manga. Tokyo has become a cruel and merciless city—a place where vicious creatures called “ghouls” exist alongside humans. The citizens of this once great metropolis live in constant fear of these bloodthirsty savages and their thirst for human flesh. However, the greatest threat these ghouls pose is their dangerous ability to masquerade as humans and blend in with society.Based on the best-selling supernatural horror manga by Sui Ishida, Tokyo Ghoul follows Ken Kaneki, a shy, bookish college student, who is instantly drawn to Rize Kamishiro, an avid reader like himself. However, Rize is not exactly who she seems, and this unfortunate meeting pushes Kaneki into the dark depths of the ghouls' inhuman world. In a twist of fate, Kaneki is saved by the enigmatic waitress Touka Kirishima, and thus begins his new, secret life as a half-ghoul/half-human who must find a way to integrate into both societies –MAL Tokyo Ghoul was quite enjoyable even though I felt there was room for more improvement. Izuku's unfair fate leaves him admiring heroes and taking notes on them whenever he can. But it seems that his persistence has borne some fruit: Izuku meets the number one hero and his personal idol, All Might. All Might's quirk is a unique ability that can be inherited, and he has chosen Izuku to be his successor!Enduring many months of gruelling training, Izuku enrols in UA High, a prestigious high school famous for its excellent hero training program, and this year's freshmen look especially promising. With his bizarre but talented classmates and the looming threat of a villainous organization, Izuku will soon learn what it really means to be a hero –MAL It's a superhero genre that has been done right, very realistic with lovable and relatable characters.
