Hi! Pre-emptive sorry for the long ask- I don't know if you've answered this before but I was scrolling through your blog and in one of your posts you note that the brief bit we see of Akira's hometown has high rise buildings, which implies it's a city. I could've sworn there was in game dialogue calling him a country boy though or referencing him being from a rural area? Is there something in the Japanese text to suggest these are meant to be taken as jokes (I.E. protag is from a city, but it's not as big as Tokyo so he's playfully considered 'rural') or is this a case of the game devs simply not considering what buildings they had in the background of that scene?

Hello! First of all, I think it's insanely unlikely that the game devs just forgot Joker was meant to be from a shack on top of a mountain and accidentally put him in a city. Maybe they didn't have time to design a farm and shoved him in a random cityscape instead? Well, maybe. I would at least have pasted in a couple more trees.

So what do we know about this?

Sojiro calls Joker 田舎もん inakamon, short for 田舎者 inakamono—someone from the countryside; someone provincial. This is what's translated as "country boy", or "country bumpkin". Chihaya uses it about herself, and Chihaya I think is certainly meant to be very rural. The Adorable Woman and Rural Young Man in Shibuya Station use inaka a lot:

His name did not originally use inakamono or similar, by the way—he's the 上京してきた青年 joukyou shite kita seinen, "the young man who's moved to Tokyo". Note the moving-up kanji there, 上, lol—this is not a sideways move, it's a definite move up.

so what is the inaka?

In short, the inaka can be the remote countryside—but it can also just be your hometown, of any description. It can be legit anywhere that isn't Tokyo. Here's Tofugu:

My mouth was hanging open and I know I was being rude, but it was really hard to pull myself together. The woman I was speaking with was from one of the top Japanese Universities. She has had international relationships, traveled the world, and done work that most foreign anime fans would kill to see. Someone with her experiences, to me, should be open-minded about other cultures and lifestyles. Just the same, I can't help but to be bothered by what she said: "I feel like anything outside Tokyo's 23 wards is inaka." [...] Often, people usually just use what they read in the dictionary, but I learned fast that "countryside" in American English is much different than in Japanese English. For me, countryside means farms. Countryside is driving to see your closest neighbor, riding tractors for work and pleasure, and being able to immediately tell who's from your town just by looking at them. When I say this to Japanese people and ask them to explain inaka, the joke is always the same: "Inaka is anything outside of Tokyo." Osaka and Kyoto, for many, aren't inaka, but Sapporo, which is one of the few parts of the country where this legendary thing called "insulated housing" exists, is inaka. [...] So you might be wondering how "bad" it really is out here. Truthfully, I'm living in a city, at least by American standards. Great bus and train systems, tons of malls and movie theaters, some of the major stores people visit Tokyo to see, game centers, golfing… and a few rice paddies. Not many, but there are some. Imagine a fashionable mall, famous manga store, well-respected school with a strong baseball team, and major supermarket, all within walking distance, with maybe one field of rice. Honestly, the place is so city that I don't think I would willingly eat any rice that grew in that field. I swear, it's in front of a bus stop.

So, tl;dr: if you aren't in Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto, you're probably in the inaka—at least to someone's mind. You can be somewhere that looks to us in every way like a city, and be in the inaka. And if you pick up sticks and move to Tokyo? Then you have a good chance of being jibed about being a "country boy".

so what is joker's inaka like?

[Joker] 田舎に帰りたい inaka ni kaeritai I miss the country... [lit. I want to go back to the inaka.] Ryuji ハハ、都会の洗礼ってか? haha, tokai no senrei tte ka? Hah. Not used to the big city yet, huh? [lit. Haha, so this is your first time in the city?]

We don't get a huge amount of detail in-game about Joker's home. Besides Sojiro's "country boy", Ryuji has a couple of comments. Here's another:

Ryuji あれ? お前ン家ってわりと田舎? are? omae n uchi tte wari to inaka? Wait a sec, your hometown isn't near the countryside, is it? [lit. isn't your place relatively countrified?] Ryuji いや、大自然でランニング練習とか気持ち良さそうだなーって。 iya, daishizen de ranningu renshuu to ka kimochi yasasou da naa tte I was just thinkin' it'd be great to run an' train somewhere out where it's all big, naturey open space. [lit. no, I thought it seemed like it'd feel great to train in the great outdoors and stuff.]

(I think something may be off here with that translation of daishizen, which seems to connote "the great outdoors", "a vast wilderness", etc, as well as just meaning "nature" (the sort you get out into) more generally". The word has been split up as if Ryuji was just saying "big nature" for some reason, like if you thought "the great outdoors" meant "the outdoors is great :D".)

But we can see from Ryuji's statement that Joker's home is wari to inaka, "relatively countrified", "kind of countrified"—it's more the country than Tokyo is, but it's probably not the ass end of nowhere, either. It's somewhere Ryuji pictures getting out into nature—but even if that's accurate and not just in Ryuji's city-boy head, that again doesn't connote "ass end of nowhere"; a lot of very built-up places are startlingly close to farmland or to nature, as with the putative rice field at the bus stop that we read about earlier.

There is, of course, a picture of Joker's home in the artbook:

That doesn't scream "rural" to me—though it's also not the built-up area we see him in with Shido. It backs onto a cliff, it's very green. It's clearly a row of houses on a street, maybe in a fancy suburb on the edge of the city?

It's a nice house, at any rate. Joker moving into Sojiro's attic, with his clothes in a box, will have been a harsh step down.

Another detail from this image before we move on:

Look at this board. We can make out what it says. We can even, just possibly, make out a town name there...

自治会 jichikai—neighbourhood associations. As you'd expect, they tend to be organised at the very local level—so Hitachi is likely to be a small district within a larger city, rather than (say) the city of Hitachi in Ibaraki Prefecture.

But there's one question I think really puts the nail in the coffin here: WTF was Shido doing in the middle of nowhere?

It's totally plausible that Joker came from a remote farm in the country, or a tiny village in far northern Honshu. But what is there in that to attract Shido? Like... Shido seems kind of an indoor guy, y'know?

He goes where his business is. He goes where the money is. It's difficult for me to picture him going to random rural areas with nobody to schmooze, with what I'm sure he'd consider to be poor facilities and shitty hotels.

Even if he did stoop to visit somewhere like that, by the time he was on his off hours getting pissed (in both senses) and attacking women, wouldn't he have gone back to civilisation?—back to the city?

conclusion??

This place Joker is wandering after dark doesn't look like The Country. It looks quite built up. I'd say it's the centre of a regional city or large town—with those nice houses we just looked at set off in suburbs along its edge. Look at this place:

It really does look like a less cramped version of Yongen-jaya, down to the trees. I don't think they spent too long on this area, but I also don't think it's inaccurate.

By the way, that "Hometown Neighbourhood" was originally 実家近くの住宅地 jikka chikaku no juutakuchi—"residential area near home". So this is not where Joker lived with his parents; it's an area close by. Like he says, he's on his way home late.

Where was he? We never find out. He has what looks like a school bag, well before his nasty crime days. Maybe he was visiting a friend we never hear about again. Maybe he was at cram school. But he's gone to this built-up part of town to do something there.

My guess would be that he lived in some prefectural capital or other. That's why Shido is there. I'd also guess that it's one of the Kanto prefectures, since the further you go from Tokyo, the less likely it becomes that Joker would have been sent to Tokyo for his probation, whether Sojiro was a friend of a friend or not.

As ever, all of this is for information only, and if you want to do something else superior in every way, you definitely should. At the end of the day Joker's a silent protagonist player insert, who can be from absolutely anywhere and as gay as you like. Let a thousand Jokers bloom.

OSAKA

If you go to Osaka around the end of a month, there's a monthly temple flea market in the Shitennoji temple yard. It's arranged on 21st and 22nd of each month, and regular people are selling there their old stuff, as well as booths selling vintage kimonos, yukatas, haoris etc., ceramics, decorations, lots of antique items, statues etc. Take a subway to Tennoji station, the temple is next it. In Osaka, near Tenma JR railwaystation, is a takoyaki shop owned by an 86 year old lady called Hiroko. She's been making takoyakis for 60 years in that shop. You might have seen this image set of Hiroko giving a piece of her mind about people complaining that her food is too yellow (if not, see it - it's hilarious!) Her shop is called たこ焼き寛子（ひろこ), Takoyaki Hiroko (Hiroko). The address is 5 Chome-6-3 Tenjinbashi, Kita Ward, Osaka, 530-0041, Japan. If you use subway, get off at Ogimatchi station to get to her store.

If you love toys and anime merch, there are two good spots for these in Osaka; one is the famous Den Den Town and other one is Kiddy Land in Umeda.

You can get to Den Den Town the easiest from Nipponbashi metro station. Just head towards south. You can also walk from Namba to Den Den Town as it's just right the next corner.

Kiddy Land is a bit harder to locate in the gigantic Hankyuu department store (which is like multiple building spreading across the whole Umeda) but you can get there the best from Umeda station. Kiddy Land has lots of toy stores, like Miffy, San-X, and a mixed store of everything cute, and also a Lego store. If you go out from the building from the door next to the Lego store, you can walk a few ten meters to a big Loft-store. It also has some merch, typically San-X and Sanrio and Disney stuff, but on the top floor of the same building there's an anime store. They sell lots of art books, replica swords and also special collectible statues like Japanese deities.

Special mentioning goes to the Namba Daiso (Namba Daiso Nansan-dori). It has 5 floors, all stuff with 100 yens. It's very near Namba metro station, easy to find! If you want to get super fancy and you've got a big budget, the Takashimaya department store is near this Daiso. You can find all kind of food items there, some with ridiculous prices. There's also Daimaru department store in Namba in close proximity - they sell fresh made taiyaki cakes in the bottom floor's food section.

KYOTO

Near Kyoto, you can find a small town of Arashiyama. It is the most well-known for its ancient wooden bridge and bamboo forests. People go just walk around into the bamboo forest. Many movies and TV series has been filmed in that forest. There's a direct train service to Arashiyama from Kyoto. Arashiyama is especially gorgeous at the end of November when the fall has arrived to Kansai area. It's apparently also super pretty during cherry flower season in spring. There are lots of temples in a small area, too, if you want to explore them.

In Kyoto, there's a design shop of SOU SOU. Now, SOU SOU makes and sells handmade tabi shoes, kimonos, yukatas, string bags, dishware, and wonderful print tabi socks but they also have their own, traditional Japanese café at their Kyoto store called Sou Sou Zaifu. You can get only coffee and matcha tea here - the order is hand made in order in front of you. It's very quiet and idyllic, intimate place. I accidentally went here to find shelter from a rain and it was so lovely. Even the shop itself is worth the visit, if you're interested in fashion and design! Read more here.

TOKYO

If you travel in Tokyo, about 45 minutes by train from Tokyo is the city of Saitama. Saitama has a Sayama Hills at Tokorozama, which is also known as The Totoro Forest. Hayao Miyazaki has taken inspiration to Totoro from Sayama Hills. It was hard to find any information of this place in English (and even in Japanese!) in the past, but nowadays there's information in English. Read more here (with a Japanese map)

48; PINKY PROMISE

“i’m sorry,” you said after clearing your throat, playing with your fingers as you looked at your friends one by one. “i’m so sorry for just dipping and not telling you why i needed to be alone”

aran sat right next to you, looking at you expectantly with his leg bouncing slightly. you could tell he was trying to conceal his nervousness. the same look was found on kita’s face, who was sitting next to your best friend.

the twins were over by the small desk, with atsumu sitting on the slightly uncomfortable looking chair and osamu on top of the wooden surface. they had a slight, albeit a little pained looking smile on their lips. and next to them, leaning on the wall, was suna. he had his hands shoved in his pockets, looking at you almost apathetically. at least that’s what you would think, if you hadn’t noticed him looking down multiple times, digging his teeth into his lower lip.

you cleared your throat, looking at your fingers for a second as you took a deep breath.

so far so good.

“i know it wasn’t fair to any of you and that i made you worry. and i’m mad at myself for needing somebody else to come to the realization that i need to be open and honest with you all, because you deserve that” you felt the corners of your lips rise up. you looked back at them, one by one. “i hope you can forgive me. and if you want to listen, i’ll explain”

for a short moment, they were exchanging some looks before aran spoke up, leaning forward slightly. “we’re listening” he gave you an encouraging smile.

you thanked him mumbling before taking a few short seconds to ground yourself. they were here, you reminded yourself, so everything would be fine, right? “so, uh, as you can tell, i got transferred to the palliative ward here,” you started, unenthusiastically pointing around the room you were currently in. “you remember how i got new meds because the old ones weren’t working anymore, right?”

all of them nodded, remembering the conversation you had with them the day your doctor brought up the palliative ward in the first place.

it hasn’t even been so long ago and yet it felt like it had been ages.

you swallowed thickly, balling your hands into fists, digging your nails into your palms. “well, turns out those new ones aren’t working either. doctors are trying a bunch of stuff, but nothing really works. so they put me here, both to monitor me and to make sure i can still live comfortably, i guess” you looked around the room as you scoffed, not wanted to face any of your friends in the moment. “don’t know what’s so comfortable about this but yeah”

a tense silence spread over you, no one daring to break it. you could only hear your own heartbeat in your ears, so loud that you were afraid that the others could hear it.

you pressed your lips together, lowering your head down in shame. “i didn’t really know how to break this to you guys,” you continued in a quiet, almost timid, voice. “palliative ward sounds so…”

“final?” it was suna who chimed in. you hadn’t noticed him moving away from the wall and closer to you. by now he was right next to the bed, pulling a lonely chair to your bedside and sitting down on it.

“yeah,” you whispered, pressing your lips together. yet before you could help it, you spoke again, the words quickly passing over your lips before you could even attempt to stop them. “i just couldn’t tell you. everything is happening so fast and i don’t think i even realized what’s going on. it feels like everything is getting worse by the minute and you’ve done so much for me for so long and i just can’t give it back anymore” tears slowly started to build up in your eyes, making you blink rapidly, desperately trying to get rid of them. “i’m just going to drag you down”

aran leaned forward, reaching his hand out for you. “hey, look at me”

“i’m sorry” you wailed, tears now falling down your cheeks. you could barely breathe, feeling like you had to make room for air by apologizing for every wrong thing you did. you felt terrible for treating them like this, for simply dipping without a single word, and yet here they were, still wanting to hear you and stay with you.

when did you become such a terrible friend?

“i’m sorry for disappearing, i’m sorry for not being honest with you, i’m sorry for not getting better,” you continued, pulling your legs closer to you. your breathing became faster by the minute, your body practically screaming for air that you felt like you couldn’t supply. not now. you had to tell them everything, you had to apologize. “i want to, i swear, i want to get better, i’m trying”

you didn’t notice how a warm, familiar hand wrapped itself around yours, slightly shaking it, trying to get your attention. “i know i pushed you away and i’m sorry, but please don’t leave me” by now your voice wasn’t more than a hushed whisper, your throat horse. “i’m so scared, i don’t want to be alone”

and even though you felt so terrible, like a horrible friend and an awful person, you couldn’t help but feel relief. they were still right here with you, listening to you. being there for you.

and yet you felt shame. they were so good to you and that’s how you were repaying them?

“hey, hey, it’s alright,” a familiar voice fought it’s way through to you, paired with another hand grabbing one of yours and putting it on a chest. you could feel it rose and fall under your palms.“take a deep breath with me, yeah?”

“in” the chest rose and so did yours as you followed the command. “and out” and again you did just as you were told, mimicking the breathing of your friend next to you.

after a couple of more deep breaths, your vision became clearer, as did your thoughts. you realized that it was aran who helped you calm down.

you had to be helped. again. you really couldn’t do anything by yourself, could you?

you pulled your hands back to yourself.

“you okay?” your best friend asked.

slowly, you nodded. “thank you” you bit your lip before adding “and, uh, i’m sorry”

he smiled at you warmly, like he had dont countless of times in your life already. “it’s alright”

after some more painfully long seconds of silence, you looked up to see the twins moving towards you too, before sitting down on the end of your bed, the mattress giving in to their weight.

“listen, we’re alright. okay?” it was kita who spoke up now, his tone not leaving any room for doubt. almost shyly, like you were a child waiting to be scolded, you looked at him, not daring to say anything. “obviously we didn’t like not getting a single word, but we understand that you needed time”

they didn’t even leave you enough time to reply, as atsumu immediately started speaking next. “but you need to know that we want to be there for you,” he said, “we’re your friends”

“you don’t have to tell us everything. but you can rely on us, you know?” his twin added immediately, almost like the two them them had rehearsed it countless times to ensure a smooth transition.

your throat became dry as you opened and closed your mouth multiple times, trying to say something, and yet no word leaving your lips.

“we know it’s hard. in fact, we know it’s harder than we can imagine,” suna continued, leaning forward and putting his weight on his elbows, which sat on his thighs. “but it’s safe to assume that it might suck a little less when you allow your friends to be there”

“we know we can’t make everything magically better” you turned your head to see that aran had a sad look in his eyes, with still a genuine smile on his face.

he knew. he always tried to better your situation, ever since you were too little and too stupid to even understand it. “but we don’t want to leave you alone with this. and i think being lonely would make it worse, wouldn’t it?”

“it would,” you affirmed quietly.

he extended his pinky finger towards you, a reminder of how the two of you used to always make pinky promises to each other for the big, important things.

he promised to always study with you so you could get into the same schools, and preferably even classes.

you promised to go to every game of his.

he promised to always listen to you.

you promised to be his support when he felt like he had nobody to turn to.

both of you promised to not lie to each other.

“no more stupid secrets that hurt us?” aran raised his eyebrows slightly at you.

“no more stupid secrets that hurt us,” you affirmed, interlocking your pinkies.
