A twisted fairytale: The little merman
Tumblr media
"Mommy, mommy! Tell me a story please!"
"Sure, sweetheart. What story do you want to hear tonight?"
"The story of the little mermaid!"
"Again? I thought you were upset about the ending because the princess never found her true love and turned to foam instead? Say, would you be interested in another story instead, one similar to the one of the little mermaid?"
"Which one?"
"Ever heard of the tale of the little merman?"
"No. Does the little merman also get turned into foam even though he saved his love?"
"Now, now my dear. Don't sound so sad. This story is quite a bit different from the one of the mermaid. It tells the story of a young and beautiful merman finding love and ultimately giving in to his dark desires. It's quite a twisted story, perhaps I should tell it to you once you're older."
"Nooo! No, please, I want to know!"
"I thought you'd say that. Alright then. Come here. Once upon a time, deep in the blue sea, there lived a little merman. He was beautiful, with amber eyes, dark teal hair and a fin glittering in gorgeous colours of green and blue. But even if he was blessed with all this beauty, the little merman was also very lonely..."
~~~
His parents had left him as soon as he had been old enough to fight and hunt for himself, after he'd learned all he needed to know. Him and his brother Natsuya still stayed in contact but even he was not very present in Ikuya's life, exploring the oceans around the world. Ikuya hadn't come with him, sceptical and cynical, largely confused by his brother's adventurous streak. The appeal of seeing new things had never quite resonated with him as he preferred the comfortable and familiar surroundings of the coral reef he'd been born into. So, even with a slightly heavy heart, he had said goodbye to his older brother, watching how his fin in the dull colours of green, orange and brown had disappeared in the darkness of the sea. Years of solitude with no one besides the creatures of the sea and the abyssal channel of the sea wizard in the deepest part of the ocean where the light didn't reach the water anymore. Ikuya had done his best to stay away from him though as his parents and his brother had warned him about the twisted man who enjoyed inflicting sorrow and despair on others, even humans which did not belong to their world.
Humans.
Ikuya had never met those beings before, had only heard tales of them from his parents. People not so different from their own kind, only that they had two legs instead of a colourful fin and lived on the solid ground. He'd been mind-blown when he had been told that they couldn't live under water because they would drown otherwise after a while. Apparently they weren't able to breathe under water differently from the mermaids and merman. At that part, Ikuya remembered having almost sympathized with humans as he had experienced the same one time in his life. When he had been small and had swam too close to a beach out of curiosity to hopefully see a human, a particularly strong wave had pushed him out of the water. He could still remember the warm sand clinging to his wet body, the unforgiving sun stinging his exposed and pale skin, the panic as he hadn't been able to move on the solid ground and the tight and contracting feeling in his chest as he had gasped, an aching emptiness inside his lungs. Natsuya had saved him just in time but since then Ikuya had strayed away from leaving the deeper parts of his home.
Curiosity had over time turned into cynical distrust as he had heard from other traveling sea folk about how humans hunted their kind, trapped them in nets, hurt them with spears and tore them away from the water, either letting them die or selling them for money, something quite valuable for their kind and something worth killing for, apparently. Ikuya knew better now, stayed away from beaches and watched the weirdly-shaped forms in which humans apparently traveled across the ocean, hid as soon as they threw their nets in to catch fish, a shared food between his and their kind. The smallest part of him harbored still his child-like curiosity to at least catch a glimpse of a human but his logical, his cynical side knew better.
Until this one terrible storm. Until he could see the surface of the water curling and rippling with movement as the wind picked up and heavy rain started to fall, becoming part of the large body of water. The usually gorgeous bluish-green water turned dark as the sun hid behind mountains of dark storm clouds. He could only imagine how chaotic and loud it must have been up there but under water everything was peaceful and quiet, put his heart at ease. He strongly flapped with his fin as he hurried back to his own cave, deciding to wait until the storm would stop. A dark shadow on the surface stopped him mid-way though and his amber eyes widened when he realized that it was a boat of a human, still out in the water in this weather, far away from the next coast. He watched with an anxious heart as the little form swayed heavily across the strong and feral waves until the inevitable happened. The tiny boat flipped over, swallowed by a large wave.
A white material, the sail as far as Ikuya recalled, floated inside the water, almost reminding him of a very large jellyfish. It still moved, indicating the movements of the water now instead of the movements of the wind, it's actual purpose on boats. It was weirdly fascinating to see the stuff fluttering back and forth but rapid movement besides it quickly became the main focus of Ikuya's attention as he felt his heart stop inside his chest.
A human. A real human.
Their movements were disgraceful and clumsy, their two legs trashing around and their arms flailing around helplessly as they tried to push themselves over the surface. As far as he could tell with his enhanced sight, every time they did, the next wave washed over them and brutally pushed them down again. Their limbs trashed around more and more urgently as he could clearly see panic riddling their thoughts and brain as they thought for their life. His amber eyes were transfixed on their struggling form as he felt a heavy knot inside his chest. The way their limbs hit the water around them, the way their body turned desperately had him recall the day he had stranded onto the beach, threatening to drown and then dry out under the unforgiving sun. His fin moved slightly up as if unconsciously wanting to help but Ikuya stopped quickly, hesitant. All the stories he'd heard spinning around in his mind. What if you'd attack him?
The surface rippled with movement as another wave shot across it, heavier and larger than all the other ones. Your whole body did a summersault as it's weight crashed over you, your head smashing against the mast of your little boat. Just like that, all of your movement suddenly stopped as your body stilled and slowly sank down, your clothes fanning out around you. He saw the swirls of red before he smelled the blood. Raw panic ran in his brain as his heart was racing against his chest, the strong emotion nearly overwhelming him. Instinct took over and before he could remind himself better, he bolted through the water.
Your eyes were closed and your mouth wide open, inhaling the water that was so deadly for your kind yet needed for his own. Arms quickly wrapped themselves around your waist as he swam up, breaking through the surface of his own world. The cold and harsh wind immediately whipped him across his exposed body and smacked his wet hair across his face, the seemingly never-ending rain rebounding from his skin. He could hear the roaring of the sky, thunder as humans called it, his body flinching whenever the loud noise ripped through the air, ringing painfully in his sensitive ears.
Ikuya felt terrified, his body beginning to shake as he was overwhelmed from everything going on outside of the water. Storms were scary, he'd expected it but witnessing one in person was so much more worse than the stories he'd heard from others. If it wouldn't have been for the warmth of your own body against his own, Ikuya was sure he'd have been completely lost to his fear. When he felt a small jolt going through your body though, it was like he was reminded that he had someone to look after, something that forced him to swallow down all of his anxieties and uncertainties. His eyes scanned your face, wet strands clinging onto it as your mouth was half-open and he could hear how you were attempting to breathe troubled.
Why? You were outside the water, you should be able to breathe normally again. For a short moment he felt the same uncomfortable panic of not knowing what to do again before his ears picked up a gurgling sound coming out of your throat. Realization flew over his face before he swung one arm around your torso, pressing it tightly against your stomach whilst bending you slightly down so that our tummy was pressed tightly against his arm. Ikuya would lie if he would have said he knew what he was doing exactly, only aware that there was water in your lungs stopping you from properly breathing. The pressure against your stomach seemed to help though as you hunched over and coughed up a good amount of water that you'd swallowed earlier before sagging in his arms, the back of your head pressed gently against his chest, your eyes still closed. Goosebumps appeared all over your skin, the cold wind and the cool water robbing your body of it's precious warmth.
Unconsciously Ikuya felt how you snuggled closer to the only resource of warmth you still had, his own body. He froze, not used to such intimacy or any touches at all due to his lonely life style. Yet even if it was awkward, it wasn't entirely unpleasant. Having another warm body pressed against his own, feeling your own heartbeat against his chest which reassured him that he'd done so far everything right. Amber eyes took a closer inspection over your face, scrutinizing every little feature. You looked innocent cuddled up into him, too innocent for him to align you with any of the brutal stories he'd heard about humans.
He was mesmerized for a while, staring at the first human he'd ever seen in his life. Only when another thunder echoed through the dark sky, searing in his ears, was he pulled out of his trance and reminded that he had to bring you to the coast. Ikuya was careful as he leaned slightly back, his back dipping back into the water. Your head was placed on his chest, above the water so that you could still breathe. He found some slight troubles with your legs as they swayed beneath the water, getting in the way with his fin which slowed him a bit down but eventually he entered the shallow water, feeling the ground whenever he flapped his fin until he felt the sand underneath his back. He knew that he still wasn't close enough but also knew that he couldn't swim properly anymore in such shallow water. Instead he flipped carefully around, holding you with one arm close to his chest whilst using the other one to crawl the last bit.
Little pieces of sand and shells were scratching against his skin, his fin a sudden weight that he wasn't used to and the crawl an exhausting exercise yet his grip on you never wavered, an unknown determination to save you. He only stopped when the waves merely swept meekly across the beach, barely enough to cover him. He wouldn't crawl any further than this, he was too afraid to leave the water completely but hopefully this should be enough. He was slightly panting by now, taking in the same oxygen as you did. It was doable for him for anow but before it could get to the point where he would feel the same tight feeling in his chest, he'd rather leave. He should have left.
But somehow he couldn't.
Ikuya was mesmerized. Mesmerized by the human he'd just saved, breathing quietly and gently beneath him, looking so docile and pure. One of his hands touched locks of your wet hair tentatively, rubbing the strands of hair in between his fingers. He sensed the warmth of your skin, felt it brush against his human upper body when he leaned closer to you. He felt a weird sensation bubbling up inside his chest, his heart still pounding against his chest. But not in the same fearful manner it had done earlier though, each heartbeat pumping a warm and fussy sensation through his body as he gazed down at you, overwhelmed in a new way.
He didn't know how long exactly he spent like this, leaning over you and just staring at you, only noting absent-minded that at one point the rain stopped and rays of sunshine broke through the clouds, gracing the earth after the storm. It shone upon you, caressing your face gently and making your eyes flutter ever so weakly, your body stirring sluggishly beneath him. Only then did Ikuya snap out of his trance and quietly yet quickly made his way back into the waves. He felt a tightness in his chest as he did so, not wanting to leave you yet there was also a weight inside his heart that he couldn't quite put his fingers around. A fear to be seen by you yet not because of anxiety to be attacked and killed. No, it was something else but he didn't know what.
The water embraced his being, welcoming him back as he crawled back into his home, his fin losing all it's previous weight as it started gliding through the water, propelling him forward. In the corner of his eyes he saw your body sitting up slowly as if still not quite there with your mind. The moment your gaze landed on the water, spotting his teal-coloured fin, you stood abruptly up, nearly losing your balance in the process as if dizzy. There it was again. The same fear, only much more intense as you had seen him. He found himself halting, peaking his head out of the water slightly to observe your reaction. You stood there on the beach, probably too far away to see his head poking out of the water but searching for traces of him anyways. He found himself dreading your reaction.
Your hands closed in on your mouth and he saw your chest expanding as you took in a deep breath.
"Thank you!! Thank you so much!!"
Your voice echoed across the ocean and the coast, wavering with excitement and sheer gratitude to still be alive, to have been saved by him. Something hot exploded inside his chest, flodding his veins with the same sensation as it seemed like all negative feelings, his loneliness and fear, melted away in an instant. His fin flapped around excitedly, his body showing physical reactions when hearing those words no one had spoken to him in years, much less a human who'd never met him before. Ikuya continued hiding though, only leaving when you made your way back to the mainland. Even as he swam in the cold water though, the heat blooming across his skin didn't cool down.
~~~
Dread that he'd never see you again soon turned into giddy relief when he one day saw you in the distance on the beach again with a new boat, setting out into the sea. You apparently were a fisher as he soon found out as he followed your boat from underwater, watching as you threw in the net. Eagerness to help you filled him every time he saw you and so he shooed schools of fish close to you, willing to share his food resource with you. Even on days where you weren't on your boat, he could often see you on the beach, although he always kept his safe distance. Sometimes you were drawing, other times you just took a long stroll across the beach, the waves splashing around your feet. You must have lived close to the ocean, as Ikuya started assuming after a while.
He often wondered if you had always spend so much time on the beach and at the ocean or if all if this had been a result of him saving you. He'd never paid close attention to humans before so he had no way of telling but the thought of you doing all of this because of a hope to see him again made his heart speed up a bit.
Even though he could see you as often as he did though, the dull pain still throbbed deep inside his heart, especially when he was all by himself again. Loneliness he had never minded or had ignored well before stretched long whenever night fell and you would head back to your home, leaving him alone with his thoughts and feelings buzzing loudly through his mind.
He wanted to touch you again, wanted to feel your warm touch on his skin, the warmth spreading through his body until it would reach his heart and fill him with the same blissful sensation he'd experienced back then. He didn't know how that should be possible though, still too skittish to reveal himself to you.
~~~
You let out a groan as you heaved the full net out of the ocean, feeling beads of sweat forming on your face and body as you pulled the full catch out of the blue water. You saw all the fish floundering desperately against the net as they were pulled out of their home. You couldn't recall having ever had such big catches before but recently the ocean seemed to be on your side. From being saved by a mermaid/merman and now always catching such a large catch, enough for you to live from whilst selling whatever you knew you couldn't devour in time, earning you the needed money.
You'd never told anyone about what you'd seen that day out of respect for the creature that had saved your life back then. You knew the tales of sirens who lured ships into their end, about the creatures lurking inside the darkest parts of the ocean, waiting to devour all humans unfortunate enough to cross their territory. At the same time you found it ironic how humans were chasing after them, caught them and killed them to show the dead bodies off like prized trophies or keeping them alive to sell them or show them off only for them die in captivity. You had a strong connection with the ocean, had grown up close to it and had filled up your parent's shoes by also becoming a fisher.
If your parents were still alive, they'd be proud of you right now, you were sure of it as you slowly pulled up the heavy catch. It felt like the net would tear apart at any moment with all the weight as you leaned further back, digging the heels of your feet into the wood as you pulled and pulled, the catch only growing heavier as it left the water. When it got dragged over the rim of the boat though, it suddenly got stuck, leaving you with no choice but to leave over and grab the heavy load with your hands. You felt the cold and wet moving bodies under your palms as you lifted the net up, nearly keeling over in the process as your foot slipped and you almost fell into the ocean only to push yourself abruptly back with the other foot, causing you to stumble back, the net clutche against your chest and soaking your shirt.
To your huge shock you saw something slipping out of the pocket of your shirt though, dropping into the ocean. You dropped all the fish, your hand flying to your pocket only to feel emptiness inside.
"Damn it!" you cursed out loudly since no one was around, storming back to lean as far over the boat as you could, eyes searching the water beneath you. You knew it would be useless though and you doubted that you could just dive in and retrieve your pocket watch which you had inherited from your father. Your hands still dove under the surface as deep as they could, feeling around. You chewed your bottom lip frustrated. That watch was one of the few things you had still left of your father. Losing it here would haunt you forever.
You pulled your arms abruptly out of the water when they brushed against something that was moving, images of sharks flashing in front of your eyes. Your movement might have lured them close as they could have mistaken your arms for prey. You'd surely not lose your arm to a shark, you'd heard not so pleasant stories about other fisher and their encounters with a shark. Your eyes were glued to the water as you took a few cautious steps back when noticing the water rippling, stirring with movement. Something emerged tentatively from underneath, a hand holding something inside it's clenched fist.
As quick as you'd stumbled backwards, you stumbled forward again when they opened their fist to reveal your watch inside their palm, holding it out towards you. It was them again, wasn't it? For a few seconds you were stunned, realizing that it was the mermaid/merman again. Had they been following you? When they stretched their arm out a bit further whilst still trying to keep their head underwater, you snapped out of your shock. You carefully took the watch out of their palm, noticing their hand and fingers twitching when feeling your warm touch grazing their skin. Every movement was slow in order to not scare them, even as you pulled away, your watch clutched in your palm.
Your eyes caught onto the way their fingers stretched out when you pulled away as if wanting to grab you only to stop midway as if remembering that they shouldn't do it. Your eyes could actually make out the outline of them, the dark hair and the shape of their fin swaying gently back and forth. Then your gaze wandered back to their outstretched arm, still there as if not knowing what to do now. Your other hand stretched out towards their own, even if you were unsure what you should do. Very slowly you laid your hand into their open palm, not flinching this time as they grasped onto your hand tightly. Their skin was about as warm as yours was, smooth as opposed to your skin that always turned wrinkly when you were for too long in water.
Your other hand stuffed the watch back into your pocket, although your main focus was on this weirdly intimate interaction with someone from the ocean right now. No one was here, only them and you and you knew in that moment for sure that you'd never let anyone know about them. This was your moment with them, your weird bond with them and you wouldn't let anyone interfere.
Your hand touched upon the necklace you were wearing, consisting of a simple string and of a small dolphin you had carved out of wood. Without even thinking about it much, you pulled it over your head, laying it gently down into their palm as now both of your hands embraced their own.
"Thank you again. Here, please take this." you spoke softly before pulling away, unsure if they had even heard you or understood your language to begin with. You watched as they clenched the little present protectively between their fingers before sinking back into the ocean. You watched with wonder and amazement as their body turned around and a part of their gorgeous fin poked out of the water as if to bid you goodbye before the wonderful creature disappeared deep into the world where they belonged.
Ikuya's heart on the other hand was pounding once again rapidly against his chest, the warmth from your hands spreading across his body until he could even feel the tips of his fin tingling with this warm shudder. He clutched the little thing you'd given him close to his chest, admiring it even if he wasn't entirely sure what it was, although he did recognize that it was in the shape of a dolphin. Had you made this? For him? He blushed with the thought, with a dreamy hope, that you'dmade this specifically for him.
~~~
Despite not being aware that it was a necklace, Ikuya still got the right idea of letting it sway on his neck, even if the changed gravity underwater often threatened to swipe his new treasure away from him. The teal-haired male wore your present all the time, never putting it away even once, the little wooden dolphin an object he cherished more than anything else. His hands often touched it as he gazed down at it with longing eyes whenever night fell over earth and water, distancing him from you.
The pain deep inside his chest had only gotten worse since that day, the ache clawing at his poor heart as he pressed the little dolphin close to his chest, praying to see you the next day again. He dreamt of taking you with him underwater, to show you his home, imagined showing you an actual dolphin whilst envisioning your amazed and happy face. Every time his fantasies were shattered though when he recalled that this would never happen. You wouldn't be able to survive underwater. You'd die.
Both of you were part of different worlds and could never survive in the other's home. He could never truly be with you the way he wished to be. The cruel reality of the situation crushed his heart completely, heart-broken sobs and whimpers escaping his lips whenever he remembered and fled back into the confinement of his own cave. There was so much he wanted to show you but it all would never be possible. Not until one night, one of another slow and agonizing nights, he remembered something.
The sea wizard.
~~~
The sea wizard's cave was located in the deepest part of Ikuya's home and the further he swam down, the more he could feel the temperature drop as darkness engulfed him, the light failing to reach those parts of the sea. Only thanks to his heightened senses and the animals down there with their glowing fluorescent bodies could he see at all. The atmosphere was gloomy, spooky and weirdly lonely yet there was it's own serenity and peacefullness. Ikuya recalled vaguely how his parents had used to tell him how only darkness would be found down here with no sign of live, fitting the grim and malicious creature living down here but he found that to not be true as he traveled further along in search of the cave. Giant spider crabs, emitting a dull orange light, countless little cute flapjack octopuses glowing in multiple colours, excitedly flapping around him as if happy about the rare visitor, sea pigs, sea angels, anglerfish and even multiple schools of fluorescent jellyfish, some twice as big as his entire head. Life was flourishing with animals down here too.
A moray eel caught his eye as it moved it's long body through the body, right at him. It's fangs protruded from it's upper and lower lips, long enough to tear his flesh off if it should bite. Instead it just seemed to observe him, it's body glowing in a light purple colour, before it swam away, stopping every few moments and looking back, finally making Ikuya realize that it wanted him to follow. He did exactly that, following the animal through the deep sea-channel, passing all the scary yet weirdly beautiful animals living down here. Eventually the moray eel stopped, right in front of a cave, partially hidden by fluorescent algae drapped over the entrance like a curtain.
A short moment of hesitation, a lump of fear forming at the back of his throat as he hovered right in front of the same creature he'd heard all the nightmarish legends before. Yet he was his only option. He clutched your gift as if to gather courage before his tail propelled him forward, brushing past the glowing plants and entering the cave. He didn't know why but somehow Ikuya had expected the inside of it to be dark and scary yet even in here was a decent amount of light. Fluorescent corals that had grown on the stone walls were lined next to each other, the way they had grown into place looking everything but natural. They lit the way for Ikuya as he slowly traveeled further into the cave, holding tight onto pendant you'd given him, amber eyes searching for any sign of danger.
The narrow halls of the cave soon gave way to a huge interior with multiple ways, all lit up with the same corals. It looked pleasant, far too pleasant if the sea wizard was anything like he'd heard. Which way was he supposed to head now though? He didn't want to look like an intruder out of fear to be punished by the infamous sea monster. Calling out to him seemed like a ludicrous idea yet it seemed to be the easist and politest option.
"Hello! Is someone here?" His shouts were diffident, still very sceptical about this all, even if it had been his idea in the first place. Moments passed by where he heard and saw nothing yet he didn't dare to shout again, anxiously waiting in the hallway of this cave. Nothing happened and it messed with Ikuya's nerves, the tension of anticipation and fear almost unbearable. Just as he decided to head out of here, assuming that no one was here, his ears picked it up. The sounds of someone moving through the water, propelling their body with strong movements into his direction. His eyes turned to the tunnel on the left side, a grotesque form slowly appearing. A part of him really just wanted to run yet he couldn't. He'd come here on his own free will, had called the sea wizard and running away now might just earn him the wrath of this man he had just disturbed.
He was so much taller than Ikuya, not only by meassurements of his upper body but also his lower body which was covered with multiple light-colored grey-purple tentacles. His skin was so pale that Ikuya could see a couple of veins underneath his skin. He had light blond hair and glowing purple eyes, his pupils a thin slit which gave him a predator-like appearance. When the sea wizard parted his mouth slightly, Ikuya saw sharp teeth, easily as sharp, if not sharper, than the ones of the moray eel earlier.
"You called?"
His voice carried confidence and strength, his body language clearly showcasing his strength, a stark contrast in comparison to Ikuya's stiff and skittish gestures. He swallowed, gazing at the unnatural lower body of the sea wizard. He'd never seen anything besides tails with fin, someone having the lower body of an octopus was new and in his eyes strange and scary-looking, from the way his tentacles twitched in the water to the sheer number of them.
He was rendered speechless in front of the sea wizard, something the man noticed.
"I don't have all day. State your purpose or leave my cave." His cold voice broke Ikuya out of his frightened trance, hands instantly flying up to grab the pendant, something the monster's purple eye noticed with slight interest.
"I-I'm here because I need your help."
He raised a pale eyebrow, mustering the young merman who had entered his home, the first visitor in years.
"Sorry kid but I don't offer my service anymore. I've closed that business down a couple of years ago. Go home."
The creature ignored the way Ikuya's eyes widened in shock, a desperate feeling invading his heart as his only hope was crushed nonchalantly by the wizard who had already turned around. "Wait! Why?" He called after the blond man, daring to swim a bit closer before purple eyes met his in a sharp gaze, warning him to not tresspass any further in. "I have my reasons. Nowadays I spent my time with something far more important. I have no interest anymore in catering to the need of your kind only to be met with accusations and ungratefulness. Solve your problems yourself."
"Wait, please! You're the only one who can help me!"
Perhaps it was the desperation that made the sea wizard turn around one more time, cold eyes mustering the little merman in front of him, amber eyes filled with pleas and despair. He pursed his lips.
"What do you need my help for anyways?"
At this question, Ikuya's breath stuttered. How would someone like the sea wizard react to hearing that he was in love with a human? He could only stare at the sea creature, mouth slightly agape and jaw loosely moving yet no sound came out. The sea wizard lost patience soon and turned around again, finally giving Ikuya the push he needed.
"I-I think I'm in love with a human."
The entire build of the half-octopus stopped, only his tentacles still moving gently around in the water, his head turning over his shoulder, releaving his purple eye which now looked at him with newfound intrigue.
"Hmm. Why don't you tell me a bit more? Afterwards I'll decide if this problem is worth wasting my time for."
~~~
He circled around Ikuya much like a predator around pray as soon as Ikuya had finished his story, purple eye glowing with something Ikuya couldn't decipher, a small grin of intrigue on his face.
"I see. Tragic indeed, two lovers of two different worlds. It makes you nearly lose your mind, doesn't it? Knowing that both of you can never be together because neither of you could survive in the world of the other one. Your heart is probably racing, your mind is filled with thoughts of them and them only and your body craves to be close to them. Am I right?"
Ikuya nodded nervously, his own amber-coloured eyes following every movement of the man out of survival instinct, as if the sea wizard would wrap hia tentacles around his slim form at any moment and brutally squeeze him to death.
"So I assume that you want my help because you need something to be able to live on the land."
Ikuya gave him a shocked look. A portion for him to live on land?
The scary man in front of him snickered when seeing his startled look.
"Oh, I see how it is. You thought that I'd make you something to be able to have them diving underwater with you, didn't you? Well, I'd hate to disappoint you but that would be a bit unfair, wouldn't it?"
"Why?"
"Think about it, they already spend so much time at the ocean, nearly drowned in here once too. You on the other hand have only ever known the safe confinements of your home and never explored the land. It is quite selfish from you to demand from me to prepare a potion to take them with you in the surroundings you feel most comfortable with. Also, are you even sure that they feel the same way about you like you do about them?"
Ikuya's hands tightened into fists, one of his hands again secured around the necklace. The sea wizard had hit a sensitive spot in him and judging from the way his smile only grew larger, revealing rows of razor-sharp teeth, he knew that too.
"However, I wouldn't want to leave you alone with such strong feelings in your heart-" he began, eyes trailing over his shoulders for a moment, his words giving Ikuya some hope, "but I do have some conditions if I'm giving you my help."
"What conditions?" Ikuya asked cautiously.
"First of all, I'm only going to offer you something so you can live up there. Judging from what you've told me, you never once left this place so I'm not helping you if you're not willing to sacrifice something in order to be with the one you love. Second of all, you're not allowed to let them know that you're a merman, especially not the one who saved them. Third of all, I want your necklace as payment."
He pointed one of his clawed fingers to the necklace on Ikuya. Ikuya's hands flew up to it, hiding the wooden dolphin behind his palms. "Why the necklace?" he asked quietly, unhappy with the thought of parting with something you'd gifted him. "I need to take something in exchange for my help after all, don't I? And looking on how much you cherish this pendant, I think it has the right amount of value. Also, why so sad? You're going to be soon with your human anyways, won't you?"
He gave Ikuya a long look, stretching one of his hands out. Moments of Ikuya hesitating passed by before he gave in, aware that he had no other options. He felt a weird tug in his heart as he pulled the necklace off and handed it over to the sea wizard who observed the little dolphin carved out of wood for a while before turning away, satisfied.
"Now we have a deal." he spoke in a far more content tone, searching for something in the little cavities within the stones where he had stoked up a lot of things, presumably for potions. He picked after a while something out, more algae as Ikuya could tell, although it had a suspicious colour of dark blue to it. He handed him those plants.
"That should do it. Take those and you'll be able to become a human just like your love on land. However, you'll transform back into a merman in a couple of months and depending in which place you'll turn back, you might die. That's a risk you have to be willing to take though. Also, a good advice: Take those once you're close to the surface or otherwise you'll drown down here."
Ikuya stared at the bundle of the dark blue plants before giving the sea wizard a confused look. "Why only a couple of months? Why not give me more?"
"That's all you'll get from me. Remember though. You have only a few months to try to make this human fall in love with you. A true love's kiss is all you'll need to stay forever with them."
"But what if they don't fall in love with me?"
"Then that just means that you two aren't meant to be and that you shouldn't see them ever again. Simple as that."
He could see Ikuya's body going slightly rigid, his sharp words getting to him. Nevertheless, he thanked the sea wizard before quickly heading out, eager and hopeful. Purple eyes watched half-amused after his fast form. How that would turn out?
~~~
The gentle night breeze brushed over his bare and wet skin, goosebumps appearing all over his upper body as he heaved himself out of the water as good as he could. He had left the safety and comfort of his home once again, his tail once again gaining a uncomfortable and straining weight he wasn't used to. One of his hands was clutching the algae close to his chest, saggy and slimy clinging to the skin of his palm. No matter what though, he couldn't afford to lose them. Even if the sea wizard had been far more welcoming than Ikuya had ever anticipated, he didn't want to stretch his kindness. This was still a creature far more powerful than him after all.
With a silent "uff" he used his hands to push his body around, his back now facing the copious amount of sand on the beach. No one was here at this time of the night, not even you. In short, it was the perfect time to take the plants.
"You have only a few months to try to make this human fall in love with you."
"Then that just means that you two aren't meant to be and that you shouldn't see them ever again. Simple as that."
The cold words of the sea wizard lingered in his mind, an invisible weight that clung to his heart. He couldn't fathom the idea of never seeing you again.
But what if...?
He shook his head, eyes closed as he tried to get rid of such thoughts. The sea wizard had to be wrong! Ikuya had felt it on the day that he had saved you, the way his body and his heart had called out to you. And you must have felt something too. His heart dropped when he grabbed emptiness before recalling that he had given up his necklace. Forbidding him to tell you who he was was unfair but Ikuya was too scared to go against what the sea wizard had said. Apparently the man had eyes and ears everywhere. He hadn't been wrong when he had said that Ikuya would be able to spend time with the real you after all. A gift far more vulnerable than the necklace and who knew, maybe you'd make him a new one.
With those thoughts in his head, giving him courage, he stuffed all of the seaweed in his mouth at once, chewing it hastily. His face scrunched up when the bitter taste of it infiltrated his mouth, the texture strangy. He was sure that the sea wizard with his own sharp teeth would be able to chew the plants well but Ikuya's set of teeth was comparable to the one of a human and after a few moments his jaw started to hurt.
He was glad once it all had become a blue paste in his mouth as he swallowed it all at once, the bitter aftertaste almost causing him to gag. He forced the gag reflex down though. Ikuya had missed asking the sea wizard what exactly would happen after his consumption of the seaweed which came biting him back as he sat there, skin prickling with anxious anticipation and worries that maybe he'd been tricked or done something wrong.
Relief almost flodded him when he noticed that his tail started tingling and amber eyes watched half-fascinated and half-terrified when the bluish-green fin started parting in the middle, seemingly torn apart yet he couldn't feel anything besides the pricking numbness in his whole lower body. Teal-coloured flakes slowly faded away, giving way for the same pale skin on his upper body as his tail re-shaped itself into two legs. Ankles, thighs and toes formed themselves out of the flesh of what used to be his beautiful fin and Ikuya tentatively reached out to brush across his new limbs. Even after the transformation was done, he sat in the same position, staring at his legs, moving his toes carefully to slowly get a feel for his new body.
Only after moving and stretching his legs for a while, a feeling so foreign to him, he slowly attempted to stand up on wobbly kness, unfamiliar with the gravity outside of water. His steps were slow and cautious, sand and little sharp shells cutting into the ball of his feet. The first few times he fell down after only a few steps, pushing himself up every time with his hands. At least no one was watching him as he continued the entire night like this, learning how to walk on two feet.
~~~
You had caught enough fish for the entire week with your last catch, leaving you with plenty of spare time if you didn't take small jobs in the nearby town to earn some extra cash. Even if you didn't sail out into the ocean though, you still enjoyed strolling across the long coasts on the island. The sea with it's gentle waves, artistic blue colours and refreshing breeze was always a welcoming sight to your senses. Everything looked so peaceful when you gazed across the water in such moments but you knew best that the ocean, like most of nature, always had two faces. Right now you didn't want to think about that though, you had come here after all to enjoy a free day.
A simple and relaxing day. All you could have wanted. Such temporary peace came quickly to an end when you caught something in the distance, sprawled across the sand. You squinted your eyes, taking in the shape of it until your eyes widened slightly shocked. That thing was a human!
"Holy shit!"
Your slow tempo was abandoned as you ran and jumped across the beach, your shoes sometimes sinking deeper into the sand, it's warmth engulfing you but unfortunately you had no time for this.
He was as naked as a freshborn baby, sand clinging to his skin. You quickly bent down, relieved to note that he was still breathing deep and softly. Was he asleep? Where had he even come from? Your eyes darted across the beach, searching for any signs of a shipwreck only to find it as clean and empty as always. Well, besides this new msyterious guest.
Speaking of him, you felt him stirring inside your arms, bleary amber eyes fluttering open, his eyelids heavy because he'd just woken up. His dark hair fell a bit over his eyes which why he maybe took a moment to see your face but the moment he did, his heart did multiple summersaults. You could feel how his whole body stiffened in your hold and tilted your head curiously yet also slightly worried when you saw how his face started to turn red, from his ears to his cheeks.
"Well, hello there. From where exactly did you come from?"

Unwanted start ( Yandere Nagisa Hazuki x Reader)
Tumblr media
“Isn't this the greatest (y/n)!” Nagisa said in his usual cheery tone. Not affected at all by the situations he has put them through. “And to think we have this whole place for ourselves!”
It was just a few months ago (y/n) had been living a normal life with work and taking care of their apartment. Now they were in a new home, one that under any other circumstance they would have loved. Yet at the moment it was only a prison that stuck them with some ‘lovesick’ crazed classmates they had in high school years ago. (y/n) didn't even know how he found out where they lived. It's not like they were that close or at least that's what they thought.
“What's with the frown?” He was standing just a few inches away from them, making them jump back from the sudden proximity.
He stared at them for a moment before smiling. “I get it! You're worried about being in a new town, right?”
He didn't even give them a chance to respond before continuing. “But don't worry as long as we're together nothing bad will happen!”
He made sure they were comfortable before taking his leave saying that he was going to finish unpacking then he would start dinner. (y/n) was left staring out the window seeing nothing but trees from their viewpoint on the bed, the handcuffs limiting their movement.
He said this would be a fresh new start after someone found them although (y/n) didn't think they made it to the door in time given the sounds they heard from the hallway in the previous house. They hoped the next person that finds them is a better run or at least unites them first.

Not Tonight
[Platonic! Yandere! Neglectful Batfam × Gender Neutral! Sibling Reader]
[Warnings: Mentions of Neglect, Reader generally not having a good time.]
(Not proofread. Not too much Yandere shown. Mostly angst with Reader. Set up(?))
2nd part here.
๑۩۞۩๑————————————————————๑۩۞۩๑
How many times have you heard them say that? How many times have you tried to do something with them, to share your passion — or even just have some coffee with them, only to hear them say that phrase time and time again.
"Not tonight."
Well, what if you didn't ask them during the night? What if you asked them in the afternoon, or just when they were already up and about?
"Sorry! I can't right now, patrol reeeally kicked my ass last night. Besides, I have some other things that I have to get done, but maybe next time! For sure!"
Okay, right. That makes sense. Sometimes their line of work can be tough and draining, especially when someone is trying to run Gotham to the ground that night. So what if you just try to ask them when they aren't so busy? It may really limit the times you can ask... but you'd still try. Maybe it could also help if you asked for smaller things, like if they'd just like to spend a little time with you before going out again, or if you could just hang around them for a while? Nothing big, and anything was fine. Even if it was just sitting next to them, and having some small talk. Or maybe just the sitting part if talking was too much.
You'd take anything at all.
"I'm actually heading out right now, so I can't stick around. Go ask someone else."
"Can't you see that I already have enough compang with Titus here? Go bother Drake or something, I don't care."
All you could hear was snores past the door when you went to ask. So you moved onto someone else, hoping for a yes as your heart began to squeeze.
Someone had to agree eventually, right?
You begged the Gods as you traveled down the long halls. The chills of reality creeping up on you.
"Sorry, I'm going out to hang with some friends, but maybe next time!"
"..." She just looked at you before shaking her head, and taking her leave.
"I've got something to do at the moment, sorry, but hey, maybe you could ask your old man? Oh! Or maybe Alfred. That's a good idea."
Dick was out in Bludhaven, and you didn't want to bother Barbara considering how bisy she must've been the other night. So, you had no other choice. You asked, heart bleeding from how hard it squeezed.
"Not now."
Simple, to the point, and sharp.
Bruce's words were as cold as ever, and yet the echo in the cave only seemed to make the gap between you and him feel so much bigger. Even as you just nodded, eyes pointed to the floor. Taking your leave with a soft sigh that barely escaped you.
The elevator ride was longer than you remembered. The cold chill in the air grew freezing even as you stepped out, and now stood in one of the many halls in the Wayne Manor. Portraits and pictures decorated the walls, their painted and photographed eyes staring at you. Their gaze far from soft, but at least it was present. At least they, in that way, felt present.
You swore the only times they ever smiled at you that wasn't faked, or just for the sake of appearances was in those paintings and photos. Honestly, it was also probably the most times they've even looked at you too, and as sad as it is — you did say you'd take anything, right?
A 'no' or 'maybe' was part of that anything, technically. It's just not what you were hoping for.
Sighing again, you stared up at one of the portraits, eyes shinging under the lights as everything you refused to say made itself so clear for a moment. You didn't want much, and never asked for more than what you were given. You didn't think so anyway.
You always followed the rules, you did more than just excel in all your classes no matter how hard it was for you to understand certain things, and you even tried to get into things your family seemed to enjoy without pushing too hard.
You studied up on all the pets Damian had so that you could not only care for them properly, but maybe even take care of them with him some day. You played games and read reviews on games you saw Tim play just for a chance that maybe you'd get the opportunity to play with him. You picked up boxing and have even been practicing your aim with an airsoft gun, and have also been going to certain place when you could to practice using real guns and learn about them just so you'd maybe be able to have a conversation with Jason, and even connect with him in some way. You even read nearly all the books in the library just to have a sliver of hope for something, anything.
You learned sign language in three different languages and tried to find out what Cassandra was interested in, just to have some kind of interaction with her. Even writing on small note cards in serval other languages in hopes she'd give some kind of response, even if you forgot to put your initials and such more than several times. You participated in gymnastics in hopes of getting closer to Dick. You tried to find out what Barbra was into so you could also hold up a conversation with her if given the chance. You've tried to match Stephen's energy and do things she likes and have even taken up material arts as a means to maybe be a little closer with everyone!
Yet it never seems like enough.
Your schedule was so packed and filled with activities and extra lessons of all kinds, just so that you could feel like you had something in common with someone in this family. So that, when given the chance, you'd be able to form a connection with one of them and your efforts and sacrifices wouldn't be in vain. Though that still had yet to happen.
You weren't even a vigilante as you tried to persue your own passion and dreams, and yet that one single thing seemed to be keeping you away from everyone else. The one thing you were unwilling to do for them just seemed to make the gap between you and the rest of the family grow bigger. They're constant and continuous dismissals only seemed to further that point.
Just... what were you doing wrong? Was you not being a vigilante and constantly putting yourself at risk every night really putting that much of a dent in your relationships? Did your dreams really get in the way of that? Just because you didn't want to put yourself in danger? Just because you wanted to pursue music instead?
You took up art despite not being super interested in it before. You've been reading all of your life. Your stretched, ran, exercised, cooked, cleaned, organized, sang, wrote, danced, and even sculpted. You picked up almost any hobby someone could have under the sun, even if it began to feel like a chore and a job to you, just so that you could have something, anything in common with this family.
Though now you've gone through countless 'hobbies', and dropped many more since nothing seemed to be working, it... it still didn't feel like enough. Like you had to be doing something more despite having lost countless hours of sleep, just to go through the list of hobbies you had written down that you had left to try. You even took up some sports you were somewhat interested in, and yet nothing clicked.
Though is that really surprising when no one noticed how many times you snuck out for lessons and practice, or how long you were out? When you'd even forget to return to the Manor sometimes, and anyone still had yet to notice you were even gone in the first place?
... You couldn't help the small chuckle that escaped you. It was broken in every way, and yet empty all the same. Maybe you were finally taking after Bruce, but you wouldn't get your hopes up.
You looked up at the painting as if it'd give you all the answers, and yet dismiss you at the same time. The disappointment you felt was normal to you at this point, but the aching pain that came after was always the hardest part. Yet you still stared at the painted faces as if they were your real family, and the people close to them. Looked at the calculated and skilled brush strokes as if they'd give you what your family couldn't. What they refused to give you at every twist and turn, no matter how much you tried to accommodate to them. To do things for them. To just feel worthy enough to stand by their side. To be closer to them.
Though in the end, it is only that. A painting. A well crafted piece that, no matter how skilled the artist, could never truly capture how distant and vague they felt when you were the one standing to the side. No matter how much experience the painter had, they'd never be able to express and show how this poor excuse of a family felt to you, because they were only like that around you.
Maybe you'd feel special if it didn't make you feel like you were wasting your life living like this...
Eventually, you were able to tear you eyes away from the painting. The moon beginning to rise as you were sure the Manor was becoming more empty than it usually was, as more of its visitors and residents left.
The painting itself was nice even if it was one of many that didn't include you, with the number of photographs without you in them being much higher. Honestly, it used to be one of your favorites despite how bittersweet you feel about it now.
You still remember that day, but that would be implying that you forgot the others.
Regardless, you managed to pull yourself away from the spot you had been stuck in for the few moments you were trapped inside your own head. You tried to make yourself feel a little better, and give yourself some reassurance that maybe tomorrow would be different some how, and if not? Perhaps the day after, and the day after that.
Yet it all failed as you passed by more and more memories. Some were events you had participated in, sure, but the pictures made it look like you were never there in the first place. Heartwarming moments littered the halls, but you only recall seeing them from a distance — or being aware that the moment had even happened only when you saw the picture be put up.
It was like the very universe was trying to send you a sign with your constant failures and your family's persistence, intentional or not, to keep you at a distance. You didn't even know if it was appropriate to refer to them as your 'family', and maybe it wasn't considering things, but you still weren't sure.
You had been fighting for a chance to talk with any of them about anything at all for the longest time, because you wanted to be a part of this family. You wanted to spend time with them and really give this 'new life' of yours a chance, but now that 'new' part of this life had worn off. It was hard and honestly more draining than it was rewarding at this point, but you still wanted to give it a try.
Sure, it had been years at this point and now you were just about to go into college, and when you had first arrived here you weren't even middle school, yet little to no progress had been made — you never gave up. You haven't given up. So maybe you could try for a little longer? Just... a little bit, not too much this time, and figure something out?
You almost felt a little sense of hope return to you, no matter how redundant and helpless this situation felt and seemed. Yet it all came crumbling down again when you passed by one of the rooms, and saw something taped to the door.
It was a flier for your performance. One that would be happening soon.
Since your siblings began to pay less and less attention to you as time went on, with your conversations with them growing even shorter, you opted to just tape fliers of your upcoming performances on their doors. Though only the performances you'd thought they'd enjoy, and just hoped that they would show up, if they wanted to, when you stepped onto that stage and approached the instrument you'd be playing for the evening.
You tried texting and other forms of communication at first, but those quickly stopped working and so you just opted for this, and of course it was just as effective as the others.
Alfred was really the only one who listened to your music when you performed, and you only knew that because you caught him playing one of the live performances you had done on the television one day. He not only going out of his way to record the performance, but also trying to find the channel it was broadcasted on.
Ever since you've tried to give him the correct channel number when you do live performances, but that still didn't feel like enough. You loved and appreciated Alfred from the depths of your heart and soul, but what would it take for one of your siblings or close family friends to notice you like that? What would it take for your supposed father to even care to listen to your music? To watch a performance? To not turn you away?
It was only in that moment did a new emotion fuel you. Crawling it's way up your spine as you carefully took the flier in your hands, looking it over before ripping it off the door.
This. This one small thing was all you wanted from them. Over everything else, you just wanted to see one of their faces, one time when you looked out to the crowd when you performed — but every single time, all you saw were strangers.
Every charity event, every gala, every party- that's all you were surrounded by, strangers. Even when you caught small glimpses of them, they were always doing something else, and completely off in a totally different world than your own. That distance along creating a large void-like gap between you and them, and yet it only ever continued to grow. Even when they stood next to you, it was like you couldn't be further apart.
The reality of everything was crushing. Near deadly as you could feel your chest and lungs tighten, with your fingers digging into the paper enough to tear it apart, and reaching your palms as they formed crescent moons, soon drawing blood. Yet nothing could compare to the weight of your heart, and how heavy it felt to carry in your chest.
As you finally moved on from the door, your mind raced. Memories and flashbacks filling your head as every word and notion flashed before your eyes. Barely even paying attention to where you were going, but not caring enough to pay attention.
Every dismissal and excuse thrown your way. Every head shake and blank look. Every confused look, and realization that you were standing there the entire time. Every birthday that passed with the same wish never being granted. Every celebration spent on your own. Every message left on read. Every note ignored. Every time you were forgotten. Every time you were left behind. Every time you brought yourself home, and every time they never noticed. Every night wasted, trying to come up with different things to do only for all of them to turn out fruitless. Everyday that 'maybe' never cones true. Every time you looked out to that sea of strangers, hoping to see someone you recognized, only to find none. Every hour you wasted trying to do something for them while they never once thought of you.
Maybe you'd cry if you could. Then again, maybe not.
You already had spent too many tears over failures you recovered and grew from, and hardships you faced and fought. You've already cried just a little too much during those night you just couldn't handle being so alone, in such a big place anymore. Besides, you've cried enough over people who've never once thought of you. Who never once tried to make time to even see one of your performances, or even allow you to spend a few minutes in their space.
You've given them enough, you think. Especially since after you spent years trying to just make it two thirds of the way — they couldn't even reach that one third of the gap you couldn't. They didn't even try, at least not anymore, and after you had tried to make it easy. Yet, you only hurt yourself in the end.
They never cared about you, and maybe they did once upon a time, but good does that do now when you're trying to go out of your way to make things convenient and easier for them, only for them to skip out on you anyway. No text, no call, no message, no indication, nothing. Just pure silence.
Maybe you were asking for too much, but was it really so bad to want to be loved? And by the people who are supposed to be your family no less?
Hah, who are you kidding at this point. You've just been living in a house full of strangers, and you're the only one who hasn't seen it yet. They've already long since cast you out, and it's only now have you come to truly realize it.
Especially now, as you stand in front of the foot of the door to the music room. Staring at the knob as if it'll turn itself.
You weren't surprised, honestly. Playing music had quickly become an amazing outlet for you, and you had always come here to seek out what little your family couldn't give you; comfort. So it was no wonder that as you collapsed mentally, you had subconsciously brought yourself here.
And yet, only one thought entered your head in that moment.
'They don't deserve to hear my music.'
Perhaps it was now that you decided they had lost the privilege to do so. After all, ever since you had started having performances, even ones in front of wealthy crowds, your 'family' had seemingly been avoiding them like the plague. Never daring to even attend one, for whatever reason, and sure you could understand why they didn't attend the ones you performed at night — but they couldn't use that excuse anymore. You have strictly been playing during the after noon, and at sunset at a push, for over three years now. You've been playing in front of crowds and releasing music for four.
So, you turned away, walking off to your room as your thoughts still stormed. Anger fueling you as you barely remembered storming into your room, collecting any valuables and belongings you had and stuffing them into a bag or two. Not caring about clothes, and only what you deemed important and meaningful to yourself as you just grabbed and shoved everything into a bag if you could.
You could clearly tell now that you obviously weren't wanted, and that no one here even wanted to do the smallest things with you. That even asking to just spend a few minutes with them was too much. So you were doing the only sensible thing, and getting the hell out of here. Moving so quickly that your breathing became uneven, but you didn't stop until you had packed everything you needed, or was important to you in some way.
You only really had a second thought about all this when you were at your window, just about ready to jump out until you paused for a second.
Looking back at the door to your room, you couldn't help but hesitate. There was only ever one person in this entire Manor who treated you like family, and actually put in effort to not only be with you, but to indulge themself in your passion. That met you at the half way mark, and even went a little over sometimes. Since even if everyone else had ignored you — Alfed was there, even if despite all of his efforts you still couldn’t handle this, and maybe that was also your own fault in some way.
You still didn't want to stay, you couldn't anymore, but shouldn't you at least say goodbye? Maybe? After everything... at least he tried.
...
You settled for second best.
Quickly, you grabbed a flashcard and wrote down something before pocketing it and moving back to the window. You may not have any equipment for this kind of thing, but you still managed to scale and work your way around the wall, and managed to reach the window to Alfred's room.
You took a little peak inside, and when you saw that he wasn't there, you opened up the window just a bit, place the small note on the windowsill, and closed it. Then, you skillfully and carefully made your way down, and snuck off to Gotham City. Making your way to a friend's place as you crashed there for the night.
Never once did you look back.
Nor did you ever feel inclined to.
------
Later that night, when Alfred read the note, all it said was:
I'm sorry, Alfed. - Y/n
Just with that alone, it was like he understood everything despite the little that was said. All he could wish you was luck, and that you'd be safe wherever you went.
Suddenly, just like that. The nights where melodies would lull the residence of the Manor to sleep, and bring a temporary, mellow peace to all who heard such a tune, were long gone...
Guess they'll just have to find it, and bring it back.
--------
Kind of rushed at the end there, hope it isn't too bad for a first post. There's probably a lot of mistakes, so apologies for that.

Pile 1:
Your future spouse would definitely be the yandere that no one notices, not even you. They watch from afar, don’t come too close and know perfectly well what they can and can’t do in order to avoid being caught yet still find their way into getting what they want.
This kind of yandere would have a habit of stealing little things from your appartement or bag, but so small it is basically not noticeable; a pen, a piece of paper, some hair thrown in the trash. Small things no one pays mind to except them.
When it comes to actual harm they wouldn’t do much since they know well enough that what they do is not good and they minimalize it as much as possible. ‘If I don’t take essential and important things it’s basically like I haven’t stolen at all.’ Is something they would often tell themselves.
Pile 2:
Your future spouse would be more of an active yandere, in such a way that you would actually notice / feel the effects from the presence of this person in your life. They’d be the very charming kind that act like they’re incredibly normal, kind, helpful and caring, but in actuality they fake all their interactions with the people around you to be able to get close to you.
They wouldn’t only charm you into becoming close with them, they’d be the yandere to put cameras in your house or make pictures of you through holes in the door or through windows. Your future spouse would also be the kind of yandere that would eventually put something in your drink (which they’re able to do since you trust them, and they’ve often cooked dinner for you) to take you with them once the pills have taken effect.
Pile 3:
This future spouse would definitely be the yandere that constantly follows you when you’re walking outside, especially at night. You’ll have a pretty active nightlife (if you don’t already) which would give this theoretical yandere the chance at following you around, mostly unnoticed. However, you would eventually find our or have a hunch due to your intuition sending off alarm bells on full blast.
Your future spouse would be the kind of yandere that, at first (and for an incredibly long time), wouldn’t directly talk to you or seek contact with you. They’d secretly stalk you, finding out everything about you; your family, your friends, your schedule, your hobbies etc. absolutely everything. Some of this pile would also be able to hack into your phone and figure this stuff out.
This s/o if they were a yandere would be the kind of yandere to manipulate situations in your life which makes it more likely to walk past them, or makes it easier to see you in real life. This manipulation could go from simply changing your schedule without your knowledge, but also harming your family (maybe friends but mostly family) to get you to come to certain places where they can easily see you and watch you.

The Little Merman Pt.2
Tumblr media
Part 1
"I-Ikuya."
His voice was so soft and quiet, if you wouldn't have been so close to him you were sure you would have missed the delicate statement of what you assumed to be his name.
"Ikuya?" you repeated with a slightly questioning tone, somehow still unsure if you'd heard correctly. He nodded slightly, brilliant amber eyes never once leaving your face. This stranger looked at you with such fascination and amazement, you felt almost inclined to be flattered if it wouldn't have been for the fact that a random man had just appeared on the beach where normally only you were since the harbour was built in the village further in the west of this island.
"Alright then, Ikuya. From where do you come from? It isn't everyday that a naked stranger just lays on this beach after all."
...Crap. He hadn't given this much thought. What was he supposed to say right now? Seconds of silence stretched infinitely as his brain was busily rumbling with thoughts and excuses to the point where he nearly suffered from an overload. Panic took over as he noticed how you raised your brow, expecting an answer from him. Instinctively one of his arms stretched out, index finger pointing at the ocean. His home. Unfortunately he realized a milisecond later that he wasn't allowed to tell you that. You had already seen though. Your gaze was focused on where his index finger was pointing. You furrowed your forehead, staring at the sea.
"Are you by any chance from overseas?"
"Yes!" Ikuya instantly replied, jumping at the chance to smooth his mistake out. He cringed when hearing his own voice, far too loud for his own liking as he had been too relieved that you'd come up with an explanation for him by accident.
"Then where is your boat? And your clothes, if we're already at that topic."
"...It sank."
"It what?!" you nearly shouted, in disbelief. Yesterday the whole sky and ocean had been gentle and calm, the image of someone still managing to sink with such perfect conditions was ludicrous. How could he have sunken his goddamn boat.
"How is that even possible? The weather yesterday was the whole day so nice." you ranted, not able to hold in your disbelief which was puffing out of you. You couldn't even wrap your head around how anyone with a little bit of experience could have sunken their boat, maybe because your parents had shown you how to navigate a ship and sail across the ocean from when you'd been only a delicate 4 or 5 years old. The techniques were etched into your brain and body, you'd never known anything else besides sailing. If the ocean would have been a bit uneasy, you'd have had more understanding but even a toddler could have sailed with such conditions.
Ikuya on the other hand had noticed that he had said something that had set you off as you were still talking. He'd clearly chosen the wrong answer but all he had been able to think about to explain the disappearance of a boat that had never existed in the first place had been this. Your own boat after all had also become part of the ocean on the fateful day where he had first seen you. That had been during a bad storm though whilst in his case, there had only been a clear sky and calm waves of the ocean but he hadn't considered that when giving his answer. You as an experienced fisher would obviously have troubles believing him. Maybe a bit of honesty would be the best weapon now.
"I...I never sailed a boat before that actually."
His statement, nearly drowning under your voice, silenced you as you stared at him, mouth still hanging half-open. Now words failed you as a new kind of ridiculousness settled in. What had he just said? He had never set foot in a boat before but had still decided to sail? That was just stupid!
"You sailed all the way from a foreign land to here all by yourself despite the fact that you had no experience on how to sail?" you asked slowly, not even sure if you should be angry or buffled by this strange guy. When Ikuya nodded, confirming your question, you couldn't help but let out a long and almost exasperated sigh. "You are an idiot. That is very reckless, you know? Why didn't you just ask someone to help you. Your family or anyone else for that matter with a bit more experience?"
"I haven't seen my family in years."
Oh. Oh god. Had you just said something very insensitive?
"What do you mean?
"My family does travel a lot around but I never joined them so I haven't seen them in years. I've lived alone all this time and had no one I could have asked to help me travel with me. The only person who was willing to help me somehow told me that I should do it all alone."
Great. You had just been very insensitive.
"Do you have to tell me that now? Now I feel like a jerk for having scolded you like this."
Ikuya shook his head softly, indicating that he wasn't mad.
"So you left your home because you were lonely then?"
Once again, he nodded, making you groan a bit. He had just presented you with a sob story, you couldn't be angry with him now.
"Alright, but that still doesn't explain what happened with your clothes, or rather the absence of any."
Ikuya blinked at you before looking down on his body and you felt a strain in your eyes as you forced yourself not to drop your gaze too in order to remain respectful.
"I don't know what happened with them."
"Ugh. Forget it, just cover yourself up with this for now." you groaned, removing your jacket and giving it to him. His hands grasped the still warm material softly and for a short moment you swore that his blush intensified before he put it on. Amber eyes turned to you again, such innocence held in them that you almost had to look away. What were you supposed to do now with him? You couldn't let him just remain here, naked and without anything. Especially not since you had a soft spot for people with sad stories, not that that was good or anything like this.
"What were your plans when you left your home?" was what you ultimately decided to ask in hopes of navigating based on your answer on what you should do next.
"I wanted to find love."
"...Huh?!" From all answers you had expected, this had not been it. You had expected to hear something along the lines of "earning money" or even "finding my family again", but love? Really? You really had found a strange one, hadn't you.
"Love? You want to find love?" you asked as if thinking he'd give you another more reasonable answer than love. Instead he confirmed your answer with a nod of his head.
"Why love from all things?"
"Because I won't have to feel so lonely anymore then."
Instantly he managed to make you feel bad again for doubting and not taking his answer seriously. He was very pure, you weren't sure if you could handle someone like that.
"Why not trying to find your family again and just traveling with them?"
"Because I'm not someone very keen on traveling constantly around. My family on the other hand loves it and I don't want to be a burden for them. I'm more comfortable just staying in one place to feel safe. So I want to create a comfortable and safe home somewhere with the person I adore." He sounded confident even with his soft voice and you almost wanted to coo when hearing his answer. This one was dangerous for your heart with his pure-hearted ambitions. You kept your face intact though. It was almost admirable now in your eyes, considering that he had gotten out of his shell only to find someone he could love and who would be willing to stay with him. Sadly that still didn't help you on deciding your next course of action. You were still as clueless as before.
"That's one of the sweetest things I've heard in my life but it doesn't help me to decide what I should do with you." you muttered out. That's when Ikuya's facial expression changed, staring at you slightly puzzled. "Aren't you going to take me with you?"
"...H-huh?"
It was probably less his statement and more the sheer sincerity and confusion in his voice, indicating very strongly that he had expected you to pick him up and take him with you, that managed to confuse you and shock you that much. It wasn't even in an entitled way, not from the puppy-like way his amber eyes looked at you.
"Hold on there. You want me to take you with me? To my house?"
"Y-yes?" His previous false confidence melted away as he gauged your clearly shocked, maybe even slightly mad, reaction to his expectations. Had he done something wrong? He had, but with his clear lack of social skills, he probably just hadn't considered that taking in someone who came all the way for you wasn't the norm. Although he would have done it in a heartbeat if the situation would have been gone to his initial plans of taking you with him. It hadn't though due to the sea wizard forcing him to follow his plans.
"You plan on staying in my house? For-for an extended period of time until you've found your love or what?"
Even you stuttered a bit as this situation only grew more ridiculous. You'd been living alone for years too but differently fromm Ikuya you had enjoyed your solidary life as of now. Providing for yourself and being financially stable.
You had successfully silenced him now that it slowly dawned on him that already you didn't want him with you, so differently from his own feelings. If only, he thought, if only you would know who he was, maybe you'd change your opinion. But he couldn't. The sea wizard had forbidden him to do so and whilst he hadn't explicitly stated what would happen otherwise, Ikuya was still a bit worried to find out.
Tears started wetting his eyes and the sight made you flinch slightly. You looked panicked and slightly awkward around as if hoping help would magically pop up but obviously it wouldn't.
"Please. I don't have anyone besides you."
You pursed your lips as you stood up, towering over the boy and just gazed down at him. He by all accounts was a fully grown adult yet his behavior and even the way he looked at you right now reminded you of a small child. Maybe it was because you had been the oldest of your siblings back then but it did pull at your heartstrings ever so slightly. You knew some pretty crude and mean people living in the village, once who would leave a helpless and begging young man like this one alone without a second thought. You were more compassionate though.
"Aghh! Alright, alright. You can come with me. But only under certain conditions!"
Ikuya nodded quickly, face lighting up when hearing that you'd take him with you. He grabbed your hands when you offered him yours and helped him to stand up. He had practiced hours how to walk and even if he was still slightly wobbly on his feet, by now he managed to stand.
"If you want to live in my house, I expect you to be of some help because I won't let you stay for free. I'm not that nice. Help with the household chores, help me to catch fish and learn how to sail a goddamn boat if you're already at it. A quick warning ahead. Work can be quite taxing at times so I hope for you that your physical strength isn't as terrible as your skilly to sail with a boat are. Do we have a deal?"
Once again you offered him your hand for a handshake to seal everything and Ikuya shook it eagerly, basking in the warmth of your hand in his. He had a small but happy smile on his face. "Deal. Also, could you tell me your name?"
He sounded slightly shy when asking you that question but you didn't hesitate at all to answer him. "Ah, my bad, I forgot that almost. The name's (y/n) (l/n)."
(y/n). It was such a beautiful sound.
~~~
True to his suspicions your house wasn't that far away from the little hidden beach. Placed near the forest, a huge cliff closeby. It was a bit more isolated from the village at the other side of the forest but it made Ikuya feel more at ease, happy that he had you for himself because of it. The walk there was already tiring though, his new legs unprepared for the walk there. The small and rocky path up the beach was steep and slippery and the forest was located on an almost tall hill-like ground, making the walk up your house all the more exhausting. So whilst you were walking up the path with ease, your legs and muscles used to everything, he was genuinely out of breath after the first few minutes, gravity he hadn't experienced underwater quickly giving him a taste of hell.
He had to stop after a while, painfully aware of your eyes on his tired form and heat washed over him, although not the comfortable and soothing kind. No, this one was a prickling heat that made his head spin with thoughts. God, what were you thinking about him right now? You were probably already regretting taking him with you if he was already that out of breath. That wouldn't have happened if the sea wizard would have just given him something to enable you to breathe underwater...
"You alright?"
He snapped out of his spinning mind fast when hearing your voice, amber eyes startled looking up to stare into your own face which gazed at him slightly concerned.
"I'm fine." he uttered out under his breath before continuing his way up, even if he was still out of breath. He just didn't want to look incompetent in front of you. You slowed down with your steps, walking behind him and with a deep rush of shame and embarrassment Ikuya realized you did that because you were worried about him potentially fainting.
~~~
"Here is your room, mate. It should be enough for one person." you said whilst opening the door to his new room, gesturing him to head inside before following him. You hadn't entered this room for a while so you could see the dust in the air, revealed by the rays of sunshine falling in the room through the window. The bed was placed right next to it and you quickly opened it to let in some fresh air. Your eyes fell on the bedclothes.
"You might want to beat your blanket and your pillow unless you like your bed dusty."
You turned around to look at him, to see what he was thinking of the room. You were slightly startled when noticing that his eyes were still focused on you as if you were the most interesting thing in the world.
"What do you think of the room?" you still asked him, mainly to have him snap out of his daydream. His eyes briefly flew across everything inside before returning to you. "It's very nice."
"Glad to hear that. Then just wait for a moment here. I'll fetch you some clothes to wear."
You headed out of the room with large steps, entering through another door a new room. Another bedroom, a bit larger than the one Ikuya would have from now on. You opened the closet, revealing piles of clothes which hadn't been worn in years, evident by the dust covering them. You grabbed a few of them before shaking them, pulling your head slightly back to not breathe in any of the dust before folding them neatly together again. Unnecessary, considering that Ikuya would wear them at any moment but old habits died hard. For a short moment you stared thoughtfully at the clothes swung over your arms, eyes zoning out.
"(y/n)?" Your head turned around surprised when hearing his gentle voice, Ikuya's head peeking through the doorframe as if unsure whether to enter nor not. "I told you to wait." you spoke a tad bit confused, wondering if you'd gotten so lost in your own thoughts that you had lost track of time.
"I know. I just wanted to see where you were." came back his careful reply which made you shake your head gently. "Whatever. Here, wear this." you replied, dropping the clothes in his arms. Ikuya seemed to check them out for a moment before suddenly tugging at the hem of your jacket, about to undress in front of you and put on the new clothes. You stopped him.
"Don't you want to do that in your own room?"
"Am I supposed to?" he asked back with a hint of nervousness in his tone, quickly dropping his hand which had moments about been about to remove the jacket. "I mean, I wouldn't make much of a fuss about it like some would and just turn around. I've seen you already naked after all. I just thought you'd do it in your own room now that you have the option." you replied casually, surprised by his nonchalant behavior about undressing in front of you. Honestly, he looked so delicate that you had expected him to be shy about such things.
"Oh. I see."
He quickly rushed back to his new room, shutting the door gently behind him. Had he messed up again? Were humans more private when it came to undressing? Ikuya wouldn't know, his kind never wore any kind of clothes. Speaking of them, it was a bit of a hassle to figure out how to put them on. Luckily they looked similar to the outfit that you had been wearing since this morning so with most articles he knew where to put them, the rest was a bit of a guessing game. Separating himself from the jacket you'd given him was a bit harder though, covered in your scent. If both of you would have been part of his kind, that would have almost counted as marking and making him your mate. It wasn't the ritual with humans though, something Ikuya would have kind of guessed but sort of didn't acknowledge to drown in the delusion of you really taking him as your mate.
"How long are you taking?"
Luckily you did not enter the room or otherwise you would have seen him hugging your jacket close to him, nose buried in the material covered in your scent. Maybe you should have entered without any respect for privacy though, it might have told you early on just what his feelings were for you.
~~~
Ikuya had lived under a rock. That was the conclusion after having lived with him only a few weeks, although it should have been painfully obvious from the very first day. He knew nothing, nothing, about anything. You literally had started teaching him from zero, wondering and asking him what the hell his parents had taught him. From his vague and careful answers you could only assume that his family had only lived with whatever nature had given them because apparently he hadn't lived in a village. You'd heard from other sailors stories about folks who didn't have the same technologies and equipments your island had so you could only assume that Ikuya's family was one of them.
~~~
"What are you doing?"
Ikuya nearly choked on the fish both of you had recently caught out in the sea. The chunk of meat got stuck in his throat, causing him to erupt in a fit of coughing. In an attempt to help him, you patted his back roughly.
"Am I not supposed to eat it?" he asked slightly anxiously, dropping the bitten fish and looking at you with scared eyes, as if afraid that you'd lash out on him. "I mean, some of them are supposed to stay in my house instead of being sold at the market so that isn't the problem. But why are you eating it raw? You're supposed to cook it before consuming it."
Now it was Ikuya who looked at you as if you'd just told him something ridiculous. "Cook it?" he repeated after you, glancing down at the dead animal. Obviously he had eaten cooked fish before but hearing from you that you were only supposed to eat it when cooked was new to him. In fact he had always wondered why you'd never eaten it raw straight away but had kept quiet out of worries to mess up even more than he'd don already in his recent past. "Yeah, cook it! You know, with fire?" you told him, gesturing around with your hands out of utter disbelief. He winced when you mentioned fire becaue fire was bad as far as he knew. He'd burnt himself just recently on those hot dancing things when you had cooked something, curious about this strange things shining in colours of red and orange, almost reminding him of the tail of his brother Natsuya.
"Well, I-I've eaten fish always this way." he confessed insecurely, glancing nervously at your face. You tilted your head. "Sh-shouldn't I have done that?" His voice had a slight tremor to it, you had come to realize over the last couple of weeks that he was quickly insecure due to his lack of knowledge regarding the majority of things you had known for your entire life. "To be fair, I know people who do eat fish raw but the concept just never sounded very appealing to me. Especially not since I've heard of one or two times where people got a bad stomach bug whilst consuming it raw."
"That only happens when the fish is off in which case you shouldn't eat it at all."
His reply was confident and quick this time, catching you a bit off guard. It wasn't often that you heard him sounding so sure about something but your surprised look only triggered his worries again as he made himself a bit smaller.
"How do you know that?"
"My family told me about it. They always made sure that the fish we ate was fresh and healthy."
You hummed, still not fully convinced as you stared at the fish. "Is it really doable?"
Ikuya nodded, amber eyes shimmering with excitement with the thought of introducing something of his own world to you which wasn't common in your own.
"It tastes really good. Especially if it's freshly caught like those ones."
He picked up the fish he had dropped and offered him to you, apparently wanting you to try right now.
You declined politely but did promise him to make a plate of raw fish for dinner which you would try. To your mild surprise it didn't taste as bad as you had expected. Obviously some parts were chewy and fishy, others on the other hand almost sweet and succulent. You could tell that Ikuya was happy when you decided to consume raw fish more often from that day on.
~~~
Riding a horse for the first time, an animal he had never seen before, was a pure nightmare for him. He was sat high off the ground, his only hold your back to which he clung the entire ride for his dear ride, bumping up and down with every step the animal took. His fear of horses was almost laughable, the fact that he'd never seen one even more. Out of fun you told him about a couple of accidents with horses you'd heard about in town. His face had gone a few shades paler as he imagined your skull cracking whilst being hit by one of those deadly things hooves, had pleaded for you to never ride one again. Considering that it was easiest to ride to the city though, he could only pray and hold on every time you rode your horse.
The city was almost worse of an experience for him and clarified for you just how sheltered he'd been his entire life. He had zero social skills, walking closely behind you, flinching as soon as someone talked to him, hiding behind your back as soon as someone looked at him. Cowering, shaking, breathing quicker. One time you had lost him shortly in the crowd of people at the busiest hours of a market and even if you'd only fetched him back to your side only minutes later, he'd been close to crying. From that day on he had been too anxious to go back again and you'd almost considered just leaving him in your house if it wouldn't have been for his even greater fear to be left alone. Instead you just decided to never let him leave your sight. Something he gladly obeyed by, sticking close to you the entire time.
~~~
"So your brother's name is Natsuya? And he loves traveling around and meeting new people?"
The only response you got from Ikuya who was very intently staring at your face, the lasts rays of sunshine illuminating your features beautifully as both of you sat on the beach, watching the sun slowly disappearing from the sky.
"Wow, you two really are the complete opposites from each other. It's kind of interesting. Have you two always been like that? I mean, being so different from each other?"
"I...guess so. I've never been the type who liked leaving his home or getting to know other people. Natsuya always had to drag me along and encourage me every time my parents forced me to leave my home. All of them loved exploring the world around them, I was the only one who didn't..."
"Do you sometimes regret not joining them?"
"Sometimes when the loneliness gets worse, yes. On the other hand I also think that it's better this way. Neither my parents nor my brother would be nearly as free as they would want to be if I were to accompany them. I'd just slow them down."
"...You're quite a self-sacrificing person, you know?"
"Is that bad?"
"Hmm. It depends, I think. If you're too selfless though, I think you'll only make yourself suffer. It isn't wrong to do something for your own joy at times, that's at least how I'd do it."
You gazed at the setting sun whilst Ikuya continued looking at you, unable to turn his gaze away from you. Even after all the time he had spent with you, you were still as ethereal and enchanting as ever. You were tough at times but also very gentle and caring, experienced and strong and patient with him and his apparent clumsiness. A beautiful human. You were a beautiful human.
"What are you looking at?"
Your face turned very abruptly around to look at him as he had been staring at you for a while now. You'd noticed that he did this quite often, falling into a trance-like state whenever he would look at you only to be snapped out of it as soon as you'd call him out for it. It wasn't any different this time. He blinked as if he had just woken up from something only to avert his eyes bashfully, gazing at his feet.
"Can I ask you something too?"
"Sure."
"What about your family? I never really hear you talk about them."
For a short second you looked taken aback, almost startled by the question only for your face to mellow into a soft and nostalgic expression.
"That's true, I guess. I asked you a lot about your family so it's only fair that I tell you something about mine. Well, where do I start?"
"Do you have siblings?"
"You bet I have. Three of 'em. I'm the oldest, then there's my younger brother and my two twin sisters. Real troublemakers but damn adorable at times too."
"I've never seen them here before. Did they move away?"
"They did. Moved to the main land and ever since we haven't seen each other that much. They didn't really like this small island. Pretty sure they hated it."
"Why?"
That's when Ikuya saw it. A rare vulnerability crawling across your face as the answer went through your mind. It lasted for a couple of seconds where you stared off into the glowing sun only to let out a deep sigh, a sigh of resignation and acceptance.
"Because of the death of my parents."
Dead? Your parents were dead?
You'd never told him!
"I-I'm sorry for asking you-"
"Hey, don't panic. It's been years and I never told you so it's not your fault. It's been so long since I've talked to someone about it too."
Ikuya, still horrified for having reminded you of such a sensitive and tragic topic, had stilled next to you. What had happened? Thinking about it, you'd never done as much as utter a word about your family before to him. Had it been because of the tragic death of your parents?
"You're curious, aren't you?"
Amber eyes looked at you shocked and he shook his head quickly.
"No! I'd never force you to tell me something that would only hurt your feelings! I'd never want to hurt you."
You couldn't hear the last sentence that he mumbled out but you could tell that he felt clearly guilty for having pried open the topic of your family.
"I'd actually like to share it with you if you don't mind. I think I could need someone to talk to about it."
"Why me then?"
"I don't know. Maybe because I trust you."
Words that, unbeknownst to you, made his heart flatter. You trusted him? "If it helps you..."
"My parents were both fisher like me, in fact I learned everything I know today from them. You should have met them. They loved the sea. I'm sure in their previous lives they must have been fish in the sea."
Everything instantly came flowing out of you as you realized how much you had needed someone to talk to about your parents, about memories that were now bittersweet as you knew that there wouldn't be anymore of them.
"Always took me out on the sea to help them with their catch and as soon as my younger siblings were old enough, they took them out too. I think they wanted us to take over their business after their death, above all they just wanted us to see how beautiful the ocean is though..."
You trailed off, eyes hazy as you recalled old times where your family had been complete, a light grin on your face. So you had learned everything from your parents then. They had done a good job in raising you, Ikuya was sure that they must have been very proud of you.
"It's ironic that the ocean that they loved so much was in the end their death though."
You noticed only from the corner of your eyes how his previously hunched over form straightened, amber eyes filled with shock.
"What?"
"They were late on that day, had sailed out a bit too far and were unprepared for the storm that came on that day. It was terrific, even from or house me and my siblings were scared, the waves large enough to swallow all of us whole. They never returned, their bodies were found only a couple of days later, drifting around in the water. It was a miracle that they had been found at all. Since then my siblings have hated the ocean and just wanted to get away from this island surrounded by beaches and harbours. And as soon as they were old enough, they did. Only I stayed, inherited the house of my family and have continued being a fisher ever since."
Your siblings hated the sea. But what about you? What were you thinking about the ocean? Did you...did you hate his beloved home in reality too? Ikuya felt a tightening feeling of fear in his chest. Right now he was technically a human too but still, he wanted to show you so much of his home. His beautiful home.
"W-what about you?" he asked with a slightly shaky voice, fingers digging in his biceps to suppress the light shaking of his hands. "Do you hate the ocean too?"
For the first time you didn't reply, instead giving him a thoughtful gaze as you were thinking about it. Neither of you broke eye contact but the silence was oppressing Ikuya as the trembling of his hands intensified. If you hated his home, what would you think about him if you would find out that he was in reality a merman?
"I don't think that I hate the ocean. It could have happened to anyone and my parents were aware of the risks of sailing out. That may sound cruel but that's nature and it happens everywhere, it can even happen inland with earthquakes or terrible storms. You're nowhere fully safe in my opinion, my parents knew that and accepted that. Honestly, in hindsight that was the most fitting way for them to leave in my opinion. I'm sure they would have thought the same."
A bittersweet grimace was on your face as you spoke so, lips pursed and hands balled into fists. A slight wetness was covering your eyes, although not enough to produce any tears as you most likely had already cried back then enough before making peace with what had happened. You gave him a weak chuckle when seeing his distraught face before patting his back friendly. "I'm the one who lost their parents. Why do you look so horrified? I'm alright, really."
"Are you never afraid that the same could happen to you one day?"
The words were out before he could even register them fully as he leaned closer, spilling out in a worried and frightened tone as his mind recalled the day you had sunken with your small boat, only still alive because he had saved you that day. He flinched and quickly pulled back when he understood his actions only a second later, ducking his head lower when seeing your eyes widening with shock as you remembered the same thing he had had in mind only seconds before. Just as fast as the surprise had come though, it left again as you mustered him thoughtfully as if considering something. Ikuya sat there awkwardly and scared, berating himself for his inability to hold his words back. What were you thinking about right now?
"If I were to tell you a little secret, would you promise me to keep it?"
Your sincere expression of trust in him almost overwhelmed him as he instantly understood what you wanted to tell him. At the same time he felt a tiny bit conflicted though. So far he had thought that his encounter with you in his real form was your treasured secret and even if he was the same person, he couldn't help but feel let down that you were willing to tell someone else without knowing that he and the merman back then were one and the same person. He couldn't find it in his heart to reject you though.
"S-sure."
"I actually almost drowned a while ago whilst I was out for fishing."
You said it with such a calm voice which was quite worrying as if you hadn't been terrified but perhaps this wasn't the first time this had happened. Something that quickly filled him with even more dread.
"How can you say that in such a calm voice? Weren't you scared for your life?"
"Oh, I definitely was. Believe me that. But...there was someone who saved me back then."
You looked shortly, only shortly, away as if feeling bashful when thinking about it, something Ikuya noticed. His heart picked up whilst thinking about the possibilities of you harboring feelings for him too. Did you?
"Who?" he pressed out with a slightly trembling tone, barely able to contain his anticipation of what you would answer him now. Would you give away what you had seen that day? Would you admit to longing to see him again?
"I don't know. I just remember that they saved me on that day and I'm eternally grateful for that."
You hadn't told him about the sight you'd seen and Ikuya was thankful for that, you were sold on keeping the merman a secret. Obviously it also meant that you did not trust him right now enough but that would surely change once you knew about who he really was. Mostly he was fixated on the warm feelings blossoming across your face as you recalled your savior. Him.
"H-have you ever met h-them again?"
"Unfortunately I haven't. It's a real pity, you know? I would have loved to get to know them better."
His breath hitched when your eyes turned to look at the ocean almost longingly, his fingers twitching with excitement. You had feelings! You must have been feeling the same as he had all along!
What if he would tell you right now? He shortly paused when that thought popped up in his head but within his lingering joy, he felt less and less scared of the consequences of his actions. The sea wizard wasn't even here. What could he possibly do to him if he would tell you?
You were surprised when feeling his hand resting on your shoulder and turned to look at him. He had a very excited glimmer in his amber-coloured eyes, something that you hadn't seen much in the nearly three months you'd known him.
"(y/n)...I-I am actually..."
He never continued with his sentence as he suddenly pulled back as if your skin was fire. You tilted your hand confused before noticing his whole body starting to tremble. You crawled a bit closer, observing him carefully.
"Ikuya?"
He said nothing, his hands suddenly clutching his head as his soft face twisted into a pained mask and a low whimper escaped his lips. Now you definitely were worried, quickly moving your hand to touch his forehead. He was burning all of a sudden, something that hadn't been just a few moments ago which shocked you and made you equally as worried.
"Ikuya, what's wrong?" you asked, standing up from the sand and jolting forward when he suddenly leaned back, all strength visibly leaving his muscles. He didn't answer, or more precisely couldn't, as you heard the hoarse and croaked sounds escaping his throat, realizing that he probably couldn't speak properly anymore. You could feel the heat radiating through his clothes, eyes fluttering as if he fought to stay conscious. You looked around in panic, wondering if something had bitten or stung him which would have been easier to explain than him so suddenly falling ill. Another painful whimper snapped you out of your search for something you didn't even know yourself.
"Do you think that you have enough strength to climb on my back?" you questioned him worriedly, kneeling down again with your back facing him. When you felt weak arms wrapping themselves around your neck, you grabbed his legs and carefully stood up, swaying a bit with the new weight before gaining your stability again. You cursed silently under your breath as you hurried back to your home, freaking slightly out when you felt his head dropping and his panting breath against your shoulders, not to mention the almost unbearable heat that made your body break out in sweat, not as if you were worried about that in that moment.
~~~
He was sure that he must have lost his consciousness at one point because the next time Ikuya opened his eyelids slowly, he was staring at the ceiling of your house, a wet rag placed on his forehead. His whole body felt heavy and hot and the blanket drapped across his frame made the heat even worse. He struggled to kick the thick fabric off his body, his limbs gravid and aching with every move he did as he struggled to gather the strength and energy to even move his muscles.
His doing was interrupted when you slammed the door open, a bowl filled with water in your hand.
"What are you doing? Oh my god, don't move!" you exclaimed before rushing to him, some water sloshing out of the bowl and onto the ground. You forced him back inside the blanket, grabbing his hands and pulling them back as they attempted to pull it away from him once again. He was incredibly weak so you had to use almost no strength at all to hold his hands, noticing with another pang of worries just how much his skin was burning with heat.
"Just lay down and rest." you mumbled in a lower tone before taking the rag off his foreheaf, wringing it out before dipping it into the bowl of water and putting it back onto his forehead. Ikuya let out an audible sigh of slight relief when feeling the cooler material against his head, bleary eyes looking at you as you stood fully up again, glancing over his bed bedridden frame concerned.
"Try to get some sleep. I'm downstairs for now but I'll come back later to see how you're doing."
Fear shot through his body with the aspect of being left alone whilst feeling as miserable as he did right now, he hadn't been sick since he had been a child where his parents and Natsuya had looked after him. But neither his weak attempts to grab you nor his hoarse attempts to call after you worked, his voice nearly gone. The moment you shut the door behind you and left him all alone, he felt the tears stinging his eyes. His whole body was burning, his head was pounding, his throat felt dry and scratchy and he felt almost immobilized as every movement, no matter how small it was, sucked out the little bit of energy he had left. He could only cry quietly, shoulders shaking lightly with his mute sobs as he felt lonely, vulnerable and helpness. Was this the punishment for breaking the agreement he had made with the sea wizard?
