What does Azula cook for Katara for their first dinner date? Do things go as planned?
my personal head canon is . . .
okay okay so hear meowt-
Azula, Toph, Sokka and Ty Lee get along splendidly like chums. Although Azula's reluctant, she can't help but follow around in their little group wreaking havoc wherever they go.
And because she's so adamant on being mean (but she actually is not, mind you), the other three in that little group like to play pranks on her to get back at her.
It couldn't have come to haunt her at a worser time than exactly when she's supposed to be cooking Katara dinner for their first dinner date.
Azula doesn't know, of course, when she proudly pours stewed sea prunes into Katara's bowl as they are seated at the private table next to the royal dining hall, garnishing it with a little fire flakes to innovate a culmination of two cultures, that she's actually tapping down generous amounts of chilli pepper used for brain stimulation.
"You really think this is a good idea?" Katara asks doubtfully as she peeps into the bowl with suspicion.
Azula crosses her arms over her chest. "Of course. The Royal Fire Academy for Girls taught me cooking during survival training and I make the best elephant-rat soup in the whole nation!" Her eyes shine with a tint of vile pride.
Katara looks at her worried. "But this isn't elephant-rat . . ."
"Oh, just eat the damn food I made for you!"
"Okay, okay!" Katara picks up her spoon, filling it with stew, before placing it inside her mouth.
Her eyes widen immediately, smoke almost exiting out of her ears. She gulps down the spoonful and the burn travels all the way to her butthole.
It feels like a volcano just threw up inside her.
"Oh my god!" She exclaims, eye brimming with unshed tears.
"What?" Azula looks at her with so much longing and expectation in her eyes that Katara feels stupid to even break the horrible news to her. "What is it?! Is it that good?!"
Azula pulls the bowl towards herself.
"No-" Katara chokes out, trying to reach the bowl; trying to prevent another tragedy, but the spoon is already in Azula's mouth and the stew is already getting sprayed to the floor from Azula's mouth in a quick shower.
"WHAT THE FUCK?!"
Azula wipes her lips discordantly, letting the spoon fall from her grip as she notices the tiny container sitting on the table. She grabs it swiftly and empties some of it's contents to her palm and BAM!
It's that thought enducing, extremely hot, chilli pepper that she swore she won't try out again, no matter what monster forced her to.
And here's her date, trying to get some water in her mouth in a way that lets her heal her own burning tongue.
Azula scowls. She knows she put fire flakes in that container. She made sure to check literally today morning. She double-checked it, in fact. Unless somehow . . .
Unless . . .
Azula's eyes widen with unfathomable rage. "SOKKA YOU FILTHY PEASANT!!!" She yells before pushing her chair back, letting it fall down in a crash as she storms out to the dining hall, smoke coming out of her nostrils.
Katara can still hear Azula yelling, "SHOW YOURSELF AT ONCE YOU IMBECILE!!!" in the hallway as she giggles to herself, her mouth and palete completely neutral and soothing again from her healing water.
She picks up the other bowl placed for Azula, fills it only with stew, and takes a hesistant sip. Her eyes widen again but this time because of the exquisite taste rather than a volcanic eruption.
Azula wasn't lying when she said she's a great chef.
She tries not to moan out loud at the flavours filling her mouth that are normally missing back in her village. Azula's made sure she added spices that aren't inherently hot to the stew from the fire nation cuisine keeping the waterbender's low spice tolerance in mind, and it's unique in a way she's never experienced before. The firebender's put in such meticulous effort into the dish that Katara can't help but think about kissing her flush on the mouth when she next catches sight of her. She gulps the stew down, directly from the bowl before helping herself with another bowlful.
...
It's when she goes to visit Azula that night, that she finds two figures walking out, rubbing their hands and neck, groaning in pain. She knows exactly who they are just from the silhouette.
When light finally falls on them, she notices that her brother's straightout missing his ponytail and Toph's got a black-eye and a broken nose. They stop in front of her.
"I don't even wanna know." She says, raising her hands, before walking past them to Azula's chambers.

this prompt came out more chaotic than i expected it to be ngl- 💀

The parallel between Sokka and Tenzin as their fathers' sons.
Sokka, left at 13 as his father and all the other men head off to war. Hakoda tells him "being a man is knowing where he's needed the most" and he needs to protect his sister, his home.
Tenzin is the second airbender. He is also half water tribe, he's a man. When Aang dies, he will be the last airbender. He understands what he needs to do.
Untold amount of pressure and responsibility have been thrust upon them by their fathers. Though, I believe it is not all intentional, but the unfortunate circumstance of being the fathers of sons who take responsibility incredibly seriously.
In Sokka's case, "protect your sister" is a vague instruction. It was meant to give him purpose, to help him feel okay about being left behind, He is too young for war, his father does not want to bring his child to slaughter. But Sokka will die with purpose. He will train the children of his tribe so they will be protected, he will face a fire nation ship until his last breath. He cannot go to war, but Hakoda did not see that war was all around them. In trying to give Sokka purpose, Hakoda put their world on his shoulders.
We do not get to see Aang be a father (in the TV shows), but we know he had hopes for the future. All his children were air nomads, and the air acolytes brought his culture back, but Tenzin could bend. This part of their culture is one ONLY they share. I do not think Aang would hide this, he is joyous that he gets to share his culture. When he feels respected, he always is, he taught the air acolytes after all. Off handedly, he could say, "I'm hopeful for a future where there are lots more air benders," and that, which feels mostly innocuous to him, is the nail in the coffin of Tenzin's fate. He is Avatar Aang's son, and the future of the air benders. It would not matter that Aang meant a future in generations. Tenzin sees the responsibility and it's his. He is his father's only air bending child, he knows what he needs to do.
Being a parent is not understanding the way the things you say harm your children. Even those things that feel innocuous in the moment can be life altering. Especially the more the child respects the parent. Purpose and Hope for those with a broader perspective, can be death sentences to a life that could have been when expressed to those who idolize the former.

examples of atla live action’s attempts to be more feminist and how they actually had the opposite effect and/or hurt the integrity of the show
already talked about katara and pakku. does not make sense that she did not have a master. point blank. just because something sounds empowering (ie katara saying “yes. and ur looking at her.” after zuko asked if she found a master) doesn’t mean it automatically is. there still needs to be logic and katara “being her own master” defies logic imo im sorry!
katara in general. she has no ferocity here which to be very honest i dont think is fully the writers’ fault. some of the blame goes on them but the actress for katara just delivered alllllll of her lines w the same exact mild tone. katara is overly motherly. she is bossy. she is passionate. she is nurturing. she is emotional. THERE IS POWER IN THESE THINGS!!!!! why would we take away her spark?!?!?!
i loved live action suki. however, i LOVE the line in the original when her and sokka part ways and sokka says “i treated u like a girl when i should’ve treated u like a warrior.” and suki says “i am a warrior” *kisses sokka on the cheek* “but im a girl too.” THAT LINE WAS SO PERFECT like lemme say it again there is POWER IN FEMININITY! there is no shame in that!!!!! why does this show wanna take that away so badly. at one point live action suki says something like “im not just a warrior, im a kiyoshi warrior” and before she parts ways w sokka she thanks him for showing her some of the world or something like that. which was fine but i just love the simplicity of the original. a girl can be a warrior and have a crush. why do we have to change that?
this is a small one and it doesnt REALLY matter, but i cant help but think they changed this to be more “feminist” which is just dumb. yue isnt betrothed? well she was but she broke it off? and hahn (her ex) isnt a huge dick? i mean it wasn’t the worst thing and i didnt really mind it but i was just kinda like ?????. feel like yue being betrothed tied into her sense of responsibility and foreshadowed the sacrifices she will make for her people. so. feels rly weird that they changed it. i think it was to show more women agency which is always cool. but in the original, yue finally gets her agency by becoming the moon spirit. that should be the end of her character arc. idk. a weird change that seemed unnecessary.
sokka not being sexist. honestly i think the live action did a good job at omitting this while not REALLY making it feel like something was missing. with that being said, something was still missing lol. once again, its apart of sokka’s character. i feel like everyone has already expressed their hate for this so ill just leave it at that.
i am a TAD indifferent on the women of the northern tribe joining the forces during the fight. on one hand i cant lie i smiled bc obviously i love water bending and i love women so there was definitely apart of me that was happy to see that moment. however. it was kind of giving like in endgame when theres that random shot of all the women superheroes in one frame so the movie could have a “slay queen. we are girlbosses:)” moment. like it just felt a little empty and it wasnt the feminist battlecry they thought it was. these women have been healing their whole lives. why would they be any good on the frontlines of a fight? they never learned combat skills! HOWEVER, when we see them, its mainly just them reinforcing the walls so like. that makes enough sense. im cool w that.
i know im dwelling but as we know i hold atla in the highest regards. it does a lot of things perfectly imo. and one of the things i think it does PERFECTLY is its treatment of female characters. literally the only thing i can think of that i dont like is when team azula beats the kiyoshi warriors and ty lee says something like “u are NOT prettier than us” NDBSKSJDJ like ok that was weird. but anyways. it irritates me how the live action kind of seems to have this pov that says “the original was good, but there were some ideas and plots that were outdated so we changed them to keep with the times” like they’re fixing something that was broken if that makes sense. when in actuality, i think atla’s representation of women is perfect and timeless. it was relevant and powerful in 2005, and it is equally as relevant and powerful in 2024. there was nothing about its feminist themes that needed to be “fixed” or “updated”.

PROPAGANDA
KATARA (AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER)
1.) Katara was always shoved aside by both the narrative and the protagonist of AtLA. Despite her powerful arc, the creators always treated her as just the girl who the guy gets as a prize for saving the world. Her friends always relied on her for everything, from emotional support (that she felt she had to give) to menial tasks like cooking and cleaning and sewing (that no-one helped her out with). Her canonical boyfriend forced a kiss on her TWICE, and this was never really brought up or discussed (when she tried to discuss the first one, he forced the second one on her). She never got apologised to, and was constantly undervalued, treated badly, and her emotions were sidelined (she basically got told she was overreacting for wanting to pursue justice for her mother's murder). So yes, I do in fact think that Katara was a victim of misogyny. Also she wasn't allowed to learn to fight because she was a girl, even though she NEEDED to, and this only changed when the teacher found out that she was his old girlfriend's granddaughter.
None of this even touches on the sh*t that she was forced through in the sequel series. Good grief, I'm not even going to get started on that.
2.) Despite being the younger of two siblings, after her mom died she was forced to assume the role of caretaker in her family despite being a whole LITERAL CHILD to the point that her older brother IN CANON can only picture her face when he thinks of their MOTHER. She was always seen doing chores in the background that no other character ever helped her with because of her place as the "team mom" despite being LITERALLY fourteen. Not to mention how the sequel series ripped all of her personality and accomplishments from her to have her stay home w the children and let her husband neglect them in ways she NEVER would have actually stood for in the og series. Where all the other characters have statues and cities and laws and bending skills named after them they make her sit and twiddle her thumbs so that she can be the avatar's perfect uncomplaining wife and silently fade into the background
3.) so some things I wanna say here might actually be controversial, because I feel like the fans actually bought into/accepted the stuff I'm talking about uncritically. or maybe it's not that deep. but anyway
katara initially can be pretty sensible - her and sokka both. they're the kids of the chief, and neither of their parents are around, so it's obvious they both feel a lot of responsibility.
but still, early on, she's rebellious, she seeks fun and adventure, she cracks jokes. she goes penguin sledding with aang, who reminds her that she is in fact a kid. she steals from pirates then jokes about it when sokka scolds her.
as the show goes on, she gets more stern, straightlaced, "motherly", and has less of a sense of humour. she's still a badass but there are jokes about how she isn't fun or funny, or how she's a stick in the mud, to the point where I feel like the audience seems to have actually bought into it too. then the ember island players episode makes out like she's super preachy and cries a lot - yes obviously I know that this is a joke episode, but the show clearly is trying to parody itself with a basis on characters actual qualities, otherwise why would they bother? and the other characters act like they secretly think it's accurate too. since WHEN?
then sokka who starts out taking charge and resisting kataras schemes, becomes the light-hearted, fun, funny one. like yes he was always sarcastic and wisecracking, but at some point it feels like the show decided that they needed to have a sokka funny, katara unfunny dichotomy. even tho sokka isn't fuckin funny, everyone groans at his jokes.
if katara doesnt make jokes like the show seems to imply, then that means what she does when she's sarcastic or whatever isn't a joke, it's something else. like idk, bitchiness, I guess.
EVE (PARADISE LOST)
1.) I recognise how insane this submission is because this was written in 1667 and so attitudes towards women were obviously very different. But misogyny has always existed, no matter the time period, and so I think it's fair to pick up on it. Although Milton somewhat avoids painting Eve as the wicked seductress, she is nevertheless presented as inherently inferior to Adam - her 'virtue' and 'passion' are supposed to be an equal counterpart to Adam's intellect but Milton's clear resentment of Eve shines through. She is vain from the beginning - enamoured with her own reflection until she meets Adam. She is Adam's subordinate and readily accepts her place in the hierarchy below him, until she meets Satan. Women seeking power and knowledge is therefore inextricably tied to the fall of mankind. Her attempt for some kind of independence away from Adam (going to tend the garden away from him) is also presented as the primary reason she succumbed to Satan because Adam is needed to protect her. Eve (the mother of all women) therefore creates the assumption that women are weak and easily misled away from men. The description of her eating the apple is very sexual - perhaps reflecting the anxieties of men at the time of being cuckolded and therefore dishonoured by their wives. She is the ultimate disobedient, dangerous wife. Her reason for sharing the forbidden knowledge with Adam, rather than keeping it for herself, is because she is worried she will face the wrath of God and be replaced with another Eve. So it is her jealousy that brings them both down. (It is all a lot more complicated than this so Eng lit people don't kill me) but yeah poor Eve.

I HAVE A CONFESSION
I absolutely love all the fanart that is coming out of the atla live action series, but the series itself is so hard to watch 😭😭 does anyone else relate? And if others really like the adaptation I wanna know why so I can try and rewatch it with fresh eyes
I feel like the storytelling isn't good. I don't mind if it's not faithful to the original, but I feel like there is so little humor or mystery and the soundtrack and lack of sound effects don't help. Also, some of the original plot they absolutely shouldn't change. Uncle isn't funny, sokka isn't misfortunate, katara doesnt get mad, aang isn't goofy, etc etc. The Gaang don't go off and have enough fun little adventures together, or learn about loacal customs, beliefs, culture, etc. Everyone's personality is just kinda flat. And the whole deal with ozai wanting his son back... like is it historically accurate? Probably. But the point of the original was that ozai doesn't want his son back because azula is a better child soldier. This is kinda important for the plot :///
And I am particularly mad about katara and suki. I feel like their personalities are so much more watered down than the original. Like this is not as empowering at all for us ladies :/ I want to see suki messing around with sokka and him simping over her that. I want to see katara lose her temper and be rebellious and get genuinely scary and powerful. I really liked that about her in the original show, and it's like the completely declawed her in the live action.
And don't even get me started on the fucking spirit world. That thing with koh was complete bullshit.
The worst part is I really liked the casting and costume and set design. Snd the fight scenes are pretty good. A lot of it was culturally well thought out, and then the writing just didn't deliver. I feel like it would have been a great way to work in some eastern philosophy/religion like animism or Taoism or ancestor worship and it really fell flat. I want to support the actors and I wanted this show to be an aapi win for us so i kept watching. But I have to say I'm kinda let down
Best part of the thing is that people are getting back into the fandom tho so I hope people still keep creating

I'll be honest the worst part of the love triangle in 12 to me (or at least the worst part of the fan reaction to the love triangle in 12) is the people who act like it's somehow Rob Paulsen and/or Mae Whitman and/or Josh Peck's fault that it's like that. I mean, putting aside the fact that blaming the VAs instead of the writers is not cool (and also the fact that Paulsen and Whitman are ridonkers talented as VAs-Paulsen has too many to name and Whitman just needs the two-hit combo of Katara into Amity Blight, Peck I have less to say as because I only really know him from Drake and Josh and 12 itself but he seems alright), they're not the only parts of their characters! Donnie and Casey get plenty of stuff to do outside of that, and while April definitely gets the short end of the stick there I can at least think of a few solid bits here and there. 12 has problems but it's really annoying when Rise ultrafans act like 12 is some blight on the franchise (we have Next Mutation for that thanks). (AND I LIKE RISE I STRESS)
ok first of all people do WHAT lmao thats actually insane, it doesnt even matter if the actors are talented or not, its very bad behaviour to be blaming actors for anything lmao
lemme also say its not even always the writers faults either, cuz something about 12s writing issues i didnt give credit to was nickelodeon or playmates for how they clearly are behind the scenes saying "do this, do that". cuz all tmnt shows are shows made to sell toys and a lot of the time things that happen is also cuz some studio exec is coming in being like "hey! we need more _ cuz kids like _!"
but like if i can be absolutely honest when i say this and this is not even directed at you so like no offence to you or anyone who's got something to say about 12 or rise or whatever this is just like reminding me of the weird inter-iteration behaviour ive seen recently (like i browse tmnt crossover stuff cuz... obvs i wanna see crossover stuff, but lately i keep seeing nastiness)
but i have seen 12 ultra fans, i have seen rise ultra fans, i have recently seen just how weird and over the top toxic certain people who prefer either can be when discussing their non-favorite show and i just. can i just say. all of you guys. just... just stop interacting w the other people's media? if you dont like a rise fic, dont read it, if you dont like a 12 fic dont read it. if you dont like the characterization? the story? you think somethings ooc? like. its okay. its not for you, just let it be. people arent bad for writing it that way, its theirs. make your own art, interact w peoples art you do like!
idk maybe im just too old for this but ive seen people on either side of that whole...............situation. put their entire faces into videos like ripping the shit out of people and naming and linking the art theyre talking about and it seems really mean.
anyway all this to say please dont talk to me about whatever drama has happened between iterations (its always those two) like... the issue is very much just gonna be a generational divide. thats all it is. 12 came out a time when the jokes were a bit meaner, and rise came out in a post steven universe era. both of these shows are good they both are just different genres. people from either side of it have different tastes because of the specific thing they like in tmnt. if rise fans think the 12 turtles come off toxic and you dont thats their business, dont interact w them. if 12 fans dont like how different rise is leave them to it.
specifically please leave me out of it, and just dont be mean to each other. putting someone on blast for their art or their perspective just makes you look like the asshole.
also i unironically enjoyed the next mutation im sorry, im cringe but you can take bonesteel and hot vampire lady and mikeys pirate radio and BEST SPLINTER show from my cold dead hands AHJKSDH

NATLA
my reactions to the netflix adaptation baby!
it's long-winded as hell!
and also just a stream of consciousness, BEWARE.
Ep1
good start.
beautiful bending. way to go animator team or cgi or like all those people that i don’t know their job title or descriptions but who have done a great job. (big step up from the adaptation we shan’t name!)
really being like, 'this aint your fun kids show' outta the gate with the burning people alive multiple times in a row, but sure.
katara shoulda been pissed and broke the glacier but fine i guess
v cool symbols within the arrow
weep for gyatso. beautiful representation. upsetting visuals.
‘relatively’ painless first ep changes, i enjoyed myself!
Ep2
sticky rice. perfect.
Kyoshi warrior make-up????? AHHHHHH IT IS BEAUTIFUL and PERFECT! Suki is gorg!
YES AIR SCOOTER
kayyyyy but we don't need to make suki weird and awkward around sokka just because he's 'no longer sexist' (or whatever we wanna call that choice) and they need some reason to interact. why not ‘hey we’re both hot, lets flirt’
the warriors training is beautiful
what if, we were training, and we looked in each others eyes, then we kissed *giggle giggle giggle*
Its giving, ‘I knew i shouldn't have asked kyoshi’ lololol
stealing roku’s thunder…….i’ll forgive it because Kyoshi absolutely KILLED! (and she’s a giant. we love)
kay this Zhao works, Ken is turning it out. His crazy energy is on display.
Ep3
no need to give us rebels within the fire nation. literally no point at this time in the story. we just entered this world, there can be one bad side without getting into the grey yet. leave it.
is that who? or is it? can it be?
jet intro woooooork
CABBAGES!
tao is SO SERIOUS. a bit much
the mechanist by our boy Danny pudi is decent
azula mai ty-lee. DOES NOT EXIST TO MINE EYES
holy fuck TOO MANY PLOTS and CHARACTERS like RELAX. (why are they all in this episode?)
jet doing jet tho. his hair is soooooooo fluffy haha
fuck it up zuko aang fight. boots the house down with that fight choreo! THE SCARVES?!Love!!!
Ep4
Bumi being angry at aang WHY? No fucking need for that.
unnecessarily convoluted bumi. it’s like they wanna change plot and character, just to change plot and character? it doesn’t work and it makes them look bad (the writers)
bumi plot didn’t need to go down like that
to take the cave of two lovers out of season two. why?
the minstrels are lovely, i like them, good job actors yay!
separating story lines though… makes us miss out on gems like ‘no one react, but i think that kid is the avatar’ BIG LOSS
pretty story of omashu animation, holding to the roots in the og episode. as they should
Give one of the earth benders who captures Iroh a full on new backstory why?
iroh backstory, well done. leaves from the vine music?????? tear jerk reaction is instant.
bumi bumi bumi smh…... see above.
dawwwwww our scarred boy. uncle is here for you.
Ep5
Should we name an episode spirited away? ……….    ._.
Why does aang automatically know the lost villagers are in the spirit world? He doesnt really know that shit yet so……
NO AZULA IN SEASON ONE. GTFO. Why give her a fucking monologue to her father advising him on the war without being asked and then he snaps at her for kissing ass!? And defends zuko? Mf hates zuko! And now azula has a story arc about being constantly compared to zuko? Thats fucking backwards BITCH. if this plot line sticks imma burst into flames and set the writers on fire with my burning body.
Also lay off on the serious serious tone dumb fucks.
kid who plays zuko gets it. whine whine whine.
Why bring sokka and katara to the spirit world? You split them up during other adventures but when he’s doing the things that are legitimate avatar duties, they come along…..
Arden Cho can do NO WRONG. My love.
THE KNOWLEDGE SPIRIT NOW!?! WTF are you doing!? Embarrassing.
TOO EARLY FOR AZULA! And mai and ty-lee are cardboard!?!?! WHY???
Paul as Iroh is correct. 100% correct. Kid who plays zuko (dallas?) has been v good.
Heibai looks slay.
VERY STUPID THAT YUE GOES TO THE SPIRIT WORLD AS A THREE TAILED FOX. OMG. (i spoiled my self for that kinda but also its obvious and bad)
Kay we're gonna skip bato of the water tribe I guess.
Adding conflict with Hakoda and sokka for what reason? honestly curious.
Doing katara’s story with her mom early is fine. its v heartbreaking and well done.
Why Koh now? Why add to that plot line? Changing the way Koh works with the fog?…..
koh design though? AMAZING. TERRIFYING.
Also instead of LIGHT filler episodes they go SAD filler……  -_-
ooop. gyatso! okay…. i guess. that’s alright.
Ep6
Not Iroh’s bun! how dare you archers?!
'he cares too much' okay caring about whether a soldier's life is lost is not too much.... but alright.
How many more times you think they could fit the phrase ‘saving the world’ into this adaptation?
Honest question. What was this latest attempt at an atla adaptation’s goal for the overarching message for this season based on their changes? like.... hmmmmm?
what is on the firebenders soldiers hands? anyone? i haven't looked close enough or paused it to see.
the blue spirit mask is perfect. if they got that wrong i would have thrown up
blue spirit escape on point!
lol zuko *slaps aangs hand away*
first fun goofy, non directly plot driving convo between zuko and aang for about two seconds this episode. about damn time.
lol every episode having a voice over, like why.
koh would not be giving people back though. facts.
good zuko backstory. hits the feels just right. curious, they have been leaving this arc as is more than all the other arcs…… is it per chance, perhaps, mayhaps because zuko’s character journey is one for the history books and is as close to perfection that any story teller can hope for? hm? maybe? YOU THINK?!
Ep7
team avatar should be sokka's line....
aang has yet to water bend..........
NOOOO NO NO NO NO NO so dirty they did Yue SO dirty.
enough Azula plot. just stop. it's embarrassing to attempt to change this. she hasn’t HIT as a character at all. Theres no punch. VERY embarrassing. and Mai and ty-lee are CARICATURES of themselves.
your 'the one’ what azula? that makes no sense.
Yue is a bender?.......
yue fox bullshit is stupid. sorry not sorry. not that she could go to the spirit world but that they teased her early in the first place. it’s not interesting or new just taking the whole swamp ep and revamping it for this season.
'wise to focus on your training during the journey'???? from what teacher was he gonna learn MF?! are you fucking dumb?
aang Keeps. On. Saying. 'i need help' but the fucking master water bender isn't like 'yo, lets get training right away!’ …..where am i!?
don't rewrite the koi fish. DO NOT REWRITE THE KOI FISH.
unforgiveable wig.
'boy of my dreams' bitch you had one dream. (yea you have a connection or whatever but ew. don’t say that)
WHY HASN’T AANG WATERBENDED YET!
take sokka's sexism out but AMP the northern water tribes sexism up to 1000% ??? WHY?
Bad bad bad bad bad. do not have aang tell katara not to fight. that is fucking stupid. SUCH WEIRD DECISIONS. GUYS. netflix writers. please. fucking RELENT! stop fucking with magic.
LOL Iroh and zuko are my biggest highlight. easily.
'my plan? my plan is to reclaim whats mine!’  ‘so no plan then?’ HA!
get azula and firelord plot OUT of here! FUCK OFF. i get it. i get they are good characters. great characters! and you wanna write them. but for the love of all story telling, you are going to burn yourselves out of plot too soon and then just start dishing out trash as if its a meal. i won’t eat your trash. I’m telling you now.
Daniel dae kim is good shit. (still wish he wasn't in the season but he's got the energy. and i love him)

why the fuck would you hurt momo?
amazing round doors. love. love. love the sets.
beautiful oasis. crushed that.
BEAUTIFUL scene design, costume design, make-up and hair artists, and overall art department! Fucking Killed It! They're the real heroes!
zuko and iroh having the most word for word lines as any other characters, can't mess with fucking iconic bitches!
VERY excellent colour effects when the moon spirit dies.
im fine with Hahn not being a dick. dats cool.
silly to say that aang 'can't come back' from merging with the ocean spirit. was that a threat in our OG? No.
The ocean spirit looks good. that was fucking tough to do im sure.
no need to make it look like the firebenders can face the OCEAN SPIRIT. it's an easy battle for him not the puny humans.
good final war. they did it quite well. lovely atmosphere and intensity. the good stuff.
omg. you killed the teen and Hahn?! whu wha?
yes, sorry… WHY on earth did Aang not bend a single GD drop of water?! why in gods name in vain?! who, who fucking decided that? WHO?!
LOL little Aang actor needing a tear stick (he’s using)
'northern water tribe was never the target' how many times can you fucking say that. no one is THAT infinitely clever. you're not pulling the wool over their eyes. one fight happened in one location and one in another, no one can ever be everywhere at once so…….. enough with the smug.
why have azula take omashu now? because they are giving azula plot early for no reason and because they are gonna fuck with ba sing se? literally fuck off.
STOP stealing shit from other episodes, the calendar is in the library. season two. same with the knowledge spirit. if you didn’t know.
okay done! (overall, a lot of good work went into this by people who i’m sure cared a lot. but no one should be surprised when everyone gives their harshest critique. source material with a steadfast fandom my loves. you had it coming <3)

katara is of the (mostly subconscious) belief that in their friendgroup, she has claim to aang and zuko, while sokka has claim to toph and suki. aang and zuko are her best friends, and it would be fucked up of sokka to hang out with them if she is not also there. i mean he’s barely even friends with them so why would he even do that anyway??? just to spite her???? meanwhile sokka encourages katara hanging out with toph and/or suki at every turn. he thinks her friendship with toph is really beneficial for them both, and it warms his heart to see his beloved girlfriend bond with his beloved sister. besides, she could stand to pass the bechdel test a bit more often :)

i know it makes sense for toph to have been p solid in her identity and not need an arc in the show but..theres so much i feel that went unexplored. like she never got to resolve things with her parents, not even after sending that letter. there just wasnt any further mention of that relationship. and like, why the fuck aang saw her in the swamp? idk i just think SOME people would have appreciated having all that expanded upon (im some people)

Aang as Zuko’s “Found-Sibling”
so i kind of alluded to it on my previous post but if zuko sees his relationship with any of the gaang as a foil to his sibling relationship with azula, it’s aang.
in the season 1 finale, zuko compares the two directly:
zuko:  I finally have you, but I can't get you home because of this blizzard. There's always something. Not that you would understand. You're like my sister. Everything always came easy to her. She's a Firebending prodigy, and everyone adores her. My father says she was born lucky. He says I was lucky to be born. I don't need luck, though. I don't want it. I've always had to struggle and fight and that's made me strong. It's made me who I am.
here zuko makes a lot of assumptions. he is implying that because aang is a prodigy like azula, everything must come easy for him. we as the audience know this isn’t true (he doesn’t know aang’s background at this point), but it does speak to his insecurities in terms of his sister (foreshadowing to his season 2 interactions with azula.)
contrast that quote with what zuko says to katara in the season 1 finale:
zuko: you rise with the moon, i rise with the sun.
he sees katara as evenly skilled as himself. a match, but with opposite bending elements. and that’s even reflected in the way that katara wins their match at night, but zuko wins their fight when it’s day time.
zuko (especially in season 1) sees azula as superior to him, someone who he’ll never catch up to in skill because she’s a prodigy. in contrast, he’s seen katara when she first started to bend and made mistakes (barely able to form a water whip, and the time she accidentally froze sokka). zuko has seen and acknowledged her growth throughout the show and he sees her as someone who has also had to struggle and work hard to get to her current bending capacity.
and like @sokkastyles already said:
Aang is the younger prodigy who he resents for being better than him in the beginning, the one who is imbued with power and authority by birth that he lacks, the “lucky” one.
continuing on, i wanna talk about crossroads of destiny. the zk scene again emphasizes how similar zuko sees katara to himself (not azula.)
he is calm, open, and vulnerable throughout these scene with katara. he almost allows himself to forget they’re on opposite sides because of how much they have in common. but once aang comes in:
Tumblr media
there’s that same anger and resentment he has towards azula.
i’ve seen some people refer to the crossroads of destiny as zuko some hidden meaning of choosing between “sisters,” but i disagree. it’s framed as a decision between azula and aang, and for zuko, it’s supposed to be an impossible choice.
so we see him go after aang with an uncontrolled intensity that is so different from the brief peace he was able to achieve with iroh in ba sing se. and it’s easy to imagine that this is because he’s taking his frustration that he can’t express towards azula, out on aang, as a substitute.
Tumblr media
we see lingering bits of zuko’s resentment towards aang, even after he joins the gaang. it’s unintentional, but from the firebending masters, we can see how he initially still holds onto that insecurity a bit.
when he initially realizes he lost his firebending he tries the forms over and over, while aang is just chilling:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
aang: that one felt kinda hot
zuko: don’t patronize me!
aang: sorry sifu hotman
zuko: and stop calling me that!
even though aang was being genuine, it’s easy to imagine that zuko is connecting this moment back to times with azula growing up. especially because we know how much his ability to fire bend is tied up into his self worth.
he’s given the chance to “prove” himself by teaching someone who he considers superior in skill to himself (aang, just off virtue of being the avatar), and when he fails, that rears up the resentment again.
but then, their dynamic shifts after zuko admits he doesn’t want to rely on hate and anger anymore. zuko has several moments where he encourages aang (who he was previously resentful towards) because he sees that aang needs it. he’s able to realize that aang isn’t a prodigy in the sense that he thinks he’s superior to anyone else. and he’s also able to see that aang has his own insecurities as well, as they get to know each other more on their trip. he has phrases like:
zuko: you can do it. i know you can. you’re a strong kid.
aang: [Turning to Zuko.] We could turn back now. We've already learned more about fire than we'd hoped. [Aang shows Zuko his flame and gives a weak smile.]
zuko: No, we're seeing this through to the end.
and aang’s face as a result:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so in a sense, zuko is able to be needed as a big brother. and to offer support because aang is unsure about himself.
also this scene reeks of sibling energy:
Tumblr media
but anyways, i think aang/zuko’s found-sibling relationship foils azula/zuko’s sibling relationship because even though they start off with resentment for similar reasons, his dynamic with aang changes.
i see people say that the reason they think katara is zuko’s “surrogate sibling” is because she provides him with care and kindness, unlike azula. the same could be said about aang.
whereas azula has made it clear that she doesn’t respect zuko’s bending, aang values and respects zuko for his skills (even when he was struggling at the beginning of the firebending masters.) aang is able to reciprocally affirm zuko as well:
aang: i don’t care what everyone else says about you. you’re pretty smart!
i also find the last few lines after they meet with the dragons to be significant:
zuko: That's why my firebending was so weak before. Because for so many years, hunting you [Turns toward Aang as screen zooms out to show Aang.] was my drive ... it was my purpose. [Aang turns toward Zuko as well.] So when I joined you, I lost sight of my inner fire. But now, I have a new drive. [Cut to Zuko's face as screen zooms in.] I have to help you defeat my father and restore balance to the world.
i’d like to think that part of losing/letting go of his anger/resentment in part was because of the new relationship he was able to build with aang. in a sense, he’s able to repair a “pseudo-sibling” relationship with a found-sibling who willingly accepts him.
i love that they’re address their confidence issues regarding firebending together.
and how, when they rushed to show the rest of the gaang after they returned:
aang: [Cut to Aang and Zuko demonstrating the Dancing Dragon to the rest of Team Avatar and friends.] With this technique the dragons showed us, Zuko and I will be unstoppable.
zuko has gained a found-sibling relationship that isn’t about comparing their firebending to each other, but working as a team. it’s so so meaningful that aang says “zuko and i.” the idea of zuko having a sibling relationship where he’s able to share his love of firebending and not feel insecure about it ...🥺. him having a “sibling” who wants to hang out with him and do things together and gushes about it with the confidence that aang had when he said they would be unstoppable.
oh! not to mention that i’ve seen people say that zuko/katara have a sibling relationship because she teases him in EIP. but like .. that’s such flimsy logic. and also? aang and zuko have their mutual teasing moments especially in the firebending masters, and it’s just adorable.
anyways, my main point from all this is that ik people love to say zuko/katara fit surrogate siblings (which i hate btw), but it’s mostly said because of katara/azula’s similar age. it doesnt matter that aang is 12, though, because honestly, he fits the “found-sibling” dynamic a lot better because of how zuko used to see aang in relation to azula. it just works better thematically. especially, because like i’ve said, and as so many people in fandom point out: zuko and katara are similar (some people... antis.. would say “too” similar). and when has zuko ever seen azula as being similar to himself? exactly.

i really dont wanna annoy you but you post about racism in fandom sometimes so i thought you'd be the right person to ask. i hope this doesnt come off as expecting u to be my teacher. yesterday someone said they didnt trust white zk shippers and i thought it was mean but then people started sending the them all these nasty messages and i started to worry maybe op was right. honestly a lot of this stuff is pretty new for me. i think our fandom is inclusive & unlike the rest of the atla fandom we actually like katara. but i'm trying to learn.
why would it be a problem that a lot of zk fics have katara looking after zuko? i always just felt like he needed it more bc he was abused and kataras better at dealing with feelings and she's good at taking care of people. is fire lady katara still ok? is there racism in our fandom? there are a lot of woc zks and i've seen them get hate for it. but the messages op got were pretty bad too. i know i'm asking a lot of questions i just hate the thinking that we might be as bad as the z*kka stans have been saying all year.
This is gonna get long so I’m just gonna jump right in. When I listened to fansplaining’s episode on fandom racism one of the guests said white fans who can acknowledge that fandom racism exists tend to frame it as “just a few bad apples” and get caught up in worrying about not looking like a “bad apple” instead of making fandoms spaces that aren’t hostile for BIPOC. Jag offs hiding behind anon to tell women of color who ship zutara that we have a creepy fetish for imperialism and colonialism suck, but your biggest concern really shouldn’t be the optics or if you can claim superiority over zukka stans.
Yeah the “katara’s a homophobe” nonsense didn’t come from our end of the fandom, but it feels naive at best or dishonest at worst to act like the zutara fandom is uniquely immune to fandom racism. A creator I follow made the excellent point that allyship conditional upon if a poc talks "nicely" about racism is still white supremacy. I believe poc need to be allowed to vent and be salty or angry without being tone-policed. I definitely have my days where I’m like “ugh white people,” or "why must white fans be like this," so I get where the OP was coming from. Ironically the folks that sent them anon hate proved their point. You can always count on hit dogs to hollar.
Fandom is only escapist for some people. It doesn’t exist in a vacuum so you’ll find racism in fandom because there’s racism in the world. Navigating that gets exhausting. There are certain things I enjoy, but for the sake of my sanity I'll only talk about it with friends in real life or only follow fans of color. Before I follow white fans I need to see first that they’re not the kind of person who inspires posts about fandom racism. A good friend of mine loves Star Wars, Kpop, and gaming but after years of attempts at calling in she decided that she’d only interact with woc in those spaces. Again, you get tired.
ATLA wasn’t on my radar until last year so I definitely haven’t read every zutara fic out there but I have noticed a lot of fics do tend to have Katara being the one comforting and supporting Zuko. It’s not inherently wrong of course, it’s just in the grand scheme of things in fiction woc are often cast as eternal caretakers and confidants in fiction:
“How characters of color are portrayed in fanworks, especially fanfiction, is worse than the actual films. They are portrayed as supportive, almost invisible understudies. Any characteristics which they possess in the [MCU] films are stripped and given to other white characters. It is not only erasure. It’s a theft of identity.
Characters of color are positioned within storylines to support the main, white characters. Even within the slash biracial pairings, the character of color is underdeveloped and in a position of servitude within the relationship.”
TheNavyLanguage, Fansplaining
As the quote above points out this honestly happens in a lot of fandoms. I’ve read fanfic for books, movies, tv shows, and comics and I can’t help but notice that in fics the writers often have the non-white character or-- if neither character is white--the darker skinned character being the care-taker, the bodyguard, or the person who is performing all the emotional labor. It’s not inherently wrong to have a character of color have a nurturing personality, you just have to remember that since Black and brown folks have been saddled with narrative after narrative where we exist to serve leaning into dynamics where the non-white or darker skinned character is providing all the emotional support and getting very little in return has some unfortunate implications.
It’s not better if instead of being defined as the avatar’s girl, Katara’s the fire lord’s girl. Part of the appeal of zutara for me is the idea that Katara could lay down some of her burdens and get some much needed support. I always imagine she’d have some major issues after the war.
"i always just felt like he needed it more bc he was abused and kataras better at dealing with feelings and she's good at taking care of people."
I’m going to push back against that statement. Yes, Katara didn't grow up in an abusive household but she has pain and trauma of her own. In fact I’d argue that her believing it’s her job to take care of everyone is rooted in her trauma. Katara needs support and care just as much as anyone else does.
Having read a lot of fics revolving around abuse victims in different fandoms I’ve observed that if fans feel a character’s trauma wasn’t properly addressed in canon, they’ll give them a lot of TLC in fics. But again, reducing the non-white or darker-skinned character to a glorified therapist has some implications.
I feel like the Fire Lady Katara headcanon's been talked to death so long-story short, it’s not inherently racist but it can problematic if it's not clear that Katara is Katara of the Water Tribe wherever she lives. Fics and art where her crown has a crescent moon, she wears blue, or Zuko wears blue when she's in red are the executions I'm fondest of.
When in doubt just listen when poc talk about uncomfortable trends in the fandom. Give fansplaining’s episodes on fandom racism a listen here, here, and here. And very loosely quoting my favorite professor just remember that if a marginalized person says they’re distrustful of a group of people or institution it usually happens after a lot of bad experiences. Don’t center your own comfort and hurt feelings.
“If we truly believe in fandom’s progressive credentials, then perhaps it is necessary for us to listen to critiques that make us uncomfortable rather than those that keep arguing that the status quo is perfectly acceptable—even as there is plenty of evidence to the contrary. Perhaps then we will be able to come at these, yes, these very complex and nuanced discussions with the type of openness and good faith that is required for them to succeed, rather than approaching them with hostility.”

PLEASE GIVE US THE FULL SOKKA AZULA PLOT IF YOU HAVE IT!
you don’t know what you’ve signed up for here sKSKS SORRY ABOUT THIS
so basically, i imagine its a few years after canon; azula (19) has been in reformative therapy for a few years and sokka (22) has been ambassador for 4 & with zuko for 3.
while zuko & azula have begun to really repair their relationship as much as they can, sokka & azula have never really uh clicked
sokka discovers theres an underground group based in ba sing se plotting an assassination attempt on zuko’s life with a series of undercover agents in the palace.
zuko assures him not to worry about it-- but sokka can’t drop it so he goes to investigates. azula catches him as he’s about to leave and is like “if someones trying to kill my brother just after he’s begun to be less annoying to me, i want in on the dismount. i miss fighting” so she tags along
sokka writes a note that’s almost identical to the “gone fishing!” one from boiling rock and kataras like “he cant honestly think this will work a second time” and zukos like “yes i too was completely suspicious yes right away”
the two of them travel and begin to thaw the ice, talking about stuff she’s learned in therapy and touching a little on sexuality, but she’s still fairly withholding.
sokka’s not at all convinced she actually cares about zuko, and he hates what she did to suki & katara-- and hell, hes friends with ty lee. he’s loyal. azula thinks sokka’s disingenuous and sloppy and doesnt get what zuko sees in him.
anyway, they make it to ba sing se and split up to interrogate some members they’ve isolated. sokka finds out their mixing a new poision, one without a cure to kill zuko with in (some number of) days
azula’s guy, however, tells her that the undercover mole is sokka and she instantly goes into action mode and tracks him down to kill him. they have a fight in a bakery (see below some V ROUGH storyboards) [full]
Tumblr media
sokkas like obviously im not the mole, but its sweet that you genuinely wanna protect your brother
but this fight destroys the bakery theyre in and they get arrested-- the underground group kidnaps them out of prison. they have to take them down, just the two of them and bond over fighting styles.
they succeed but dont know where this poison's being made so sokka suggest lake logai and also theyre now fugatives in ba sing se, so they have to change into disguises
they have to rest in a hotel for a night since the tides too dangerous to get to the bottom of the lake rn; there they talk about how they each look like their mothers and what that means to them
azula talks about how finding her identity after the war has been hard bc everytime she looks into the mirror she sees her mothers face and sokkas like “well cut your hair”
so they cut her hair and bond. (side note i think they have the same benefits to theyre dynamic as katara & zuko; they other is the sibling of their character foil. s & k have the relationship z&a never got to have; and a&z have a competition k&s never could develop.)
anyway this is already way too long im so sorry SKKS spoiler it has a happy ending, they bond, zuko doesnt die-- i wont bore you with the details : heres two fake screen shots just to end it

what would u find in each of the gaangs notes app?
aang: different recipes he wants to try, things he wants to buy or appa and katara and his friends etcetc, funny jokes he doesnt wanna forget, shows he wants to watch, lots of lists, philosophical questions that he wants to bring up at the next smoke sesh.
katara: instagram caption ideas (ME TOO BABE ME TOO), important links, passwords and usernames, conspiracy theories that are actually kinda legit, moves that she wants to practice for her routine (is she a gymnast? and ice skater? a diver? you decide.).
sokka: invention ideas that would actually be so helpful and world changing, invention ideas that are just batshit fucking crazy, jokes that he tells aang so aang can put them in his notes, pick up lines, reminders of things he has to do, homework assignments, random words that he types down because he wakes up at night while dreaming and wants to remember what he dreamt about but the writing just comes out in gibberish.
zuko: its literally just the word adele. like thats his only note. it reads this: “adele” thats it thats the whole not.
toph: all of her high thoughts. practice seshes of speech to text consisting of things her friends copy and paste in there for her to listen back to because they think its fun or insults for people to practice speaking into the mic and making sure her shakespearian insults are perfectly remembered, food she likes, pets she wants, tattoos she wants.
suki: list of things she wants for her birthday and NOTHING else.
azula: list of things she wants for her birthday AND new years because its a new year and she needs new things.
mai: she writes her notes on paper but her camera roll is full of pictures of knives she sees at the store or out and about that she wants to use as inspiration for her knife making business.
ty lee: every acrobatics competition shes won and performance shes been in just so she can remember for her resume, a full ranking of every shade of pink thats been changed far too much, flavors of protein powder she wants to try, a list of everyone she knows who she thinks is queer and puts a little check mark next to each person who has come out so she knows who to make pins w their flag on it for and also just to test her gaydar, places she wants to visit.
yue: her friends star charts and what they mean and whos compatible w one another, a list of every successful couple shes set up using her astrology charts, song lyrics, poems, writing ideas (the thing w the last three is that the song lyrics and poems are absolute GARBAGE but the story ideas lowkey slap), rants she has ab ppl but doesnt know who can say these things too so she just writes all of her feelings and angers and annoyances in her notes.
jet: various ideas for what his username should be on insta and twitter (ex: jetplane jetfuel battle_of_jettysburgh etc.), political arguments for every blatantly bigoted idea that assholes always use to try and shut moraly sound people up, funky sock ideas he has for his knitting business.
