MANILA, Philippines – Seventeen-year-old student Kian Loyd Delos Santos could have been a policeman, but the policemen who killed him made this dream impossible.

On Wednesday night, August 16, Kian was shot to death in what the police described as a shooting encounter in a dark alley near his house.

CCTV footage and witnesses, however, revealed that he was dragged from one alley to another, past a basketball court, and into a dead-end corner where he was asked to run with a gun – and when he did, was shot.

Dinagsa ang burol ni Kian ng daan-daang kababayang nakikiramay sa mga kaibigan at pamilya ng yumaong 17 taon gulang na mag-aaral. Namatay si Kian bunga ng #WarOnDrugs ng kapulisan at pamahalaan. Nagkaroon ng ilang programa, padasal, at pagsindi ng mga kandila sa mga eskenita malapit sa kanilang bahay at tindahan upang iparating ang kanilang mga hiling at hinaing ukol kay Kian at sa iba pang biktima.

Noong Agosto 16, pinaslang si Kian delos Santos sa isang kontra-drograng raid sa Caloocan. Isa lamang siya sa sandamakmak na napatay dulot ng mga operasyon ng pulis sa nagdaang mga araw at linggo. Pumutok ang kontrobersya nang 'di umanong maraming pagtatakip at pananamantala na pilit na itinatapal sa totoong nangyari sa kaniyang katawan at sa kaganapan ng gabing namatay siya. 

This is a photo series published in Matanglawin Ateneo’s facebook page that sheds light on Kian, only one of the thousands of police operation killing victims brought by police operations killings in line with President Duterte's campaign on the War on Drugs.

These photos were taken in one of the streets near Kian Delos Santos’ home and near the street where he was gunned down. One could only imagine the conditions the children of their neighborhood are living and experiencing then and now.

Two years ago and still nothing.

This realization has been with me for two years. EVRYTHING IS STILL THE SAME.

Malapit nang matapos noon ang unang taon ko sa kolehiyo nang mabalitaan ko na isang batchmate at kaibigan ko na nagaaral sa kalapit na university ang namatay dahil nahagip ng isang cargo truck. Pamilyar ako sa lugar kung saan sya naaksidente dahil araw-araw dumaadaan din ako doon. Tandang-tanda ko pa yung signage na nakapaskil bago magintersection: TURN RIGHT ANYTIME WITH CARE. Dahil nga may island ng stoplight sa intersection nagkaroon ng extra branch yung intersection, cars and trucks can just turn right even if the light is red. Kapag hindi ka extra careful you'll find yourself in an accident. That's exactly what happened to my friend.

What's the point?

After his death, that's the only time when they changed the sign (something about stop when red light is on) and made the pedxing clear. When I saw the change I was so mad and frustrated. Why? BECAUSE MY FRIEND HAD TO DIE FIRST.

What happened to Kian the grade 11 who was killed, triggered this memory. I am asking myself now, how many more young lives should end like Kian's? What do we need to open our eyes? These two events may not be in the same context but I hope you get the point.

Our country does not deserve this. The Filipino people, specially our youth should not be experiencing this.

Kian, Carl, Kulot and Horacio: Four Deaths That Shook The Filipino Nation.

Don’t get me wrong, any death is meant to shake any sane mind, or any sane heart at that. But the death of each of these four young men are of great significance. Within a span of 30 days, four young Filipinos were killed because of merciless violence, and what assurance have we that this will end with the death of a young man seeking refuge in the hands of men whom he regarded his brothers?

Something has happened to the Philippines. We are facing a crisis. A wave of violence has begun and any of us now could be a victim, or a perpetrator. This wave is so strong that there will come a point wherein we do not remain as mere spectators. We will either be the one or the other. This is inevitable – unless we do something about it now.

Horacio himself had been an advocate against Extra-Judicial Killings. He has condemned in his Facebook Profile the deaths of those who weren’t given the chance to defend themselves (and were killed for the thrill of it, I daresay). “Uphold Human Rights!” he proclaimed.

Let his words ring in your ears: Uphold human rights.

The young man himself had his own human rights violated. Horacio Castillo III was killed mercilessly. Like the young men for whom he screamed for justice, Horacio was treated like an animal, he had his skin burnt and his flesh paddled. Like Kian, Carl and Kulot, Horacio was treated inhumanely, like an animal led to the slaughterhouse. Like the others, his voice was muffled, his plead for mercy rejected, and his own dignity trampled upon to the point where he could no longer say “Please…”

My dear kababayans, what has happened to us?

I believe you and I can make a difference. Let us rise up and join our voices to that one voice of the man we fondly call Atio: “Itaguyod ang Karapatang Pantao! Uphold Human Rights!”

War on drugs Giyera laban sa droga. Pinatupad ng Pangulo para sa termino nya. Laban sa mga taong nalulong sa bawal na gamot at marijuana.
